Is Commanders brass on the same page about bringing in a huge question mark in Brandon Aiyuk?
Transcript
00:00I think there's a really healthy division of labor in good football organizations where
00:06the front office is focused on making the team better all the time and thinking big picture
00:13for the team. Salary caps, all those sorts of things. Coaching staff is focused on winning
00:18and making sure players are getting better and making sure the locker room's in a healthy space.
00:25And that's Dan Quinn's job, right? And Dan Quinn, because Brandon Ayuk very publicly over the weekend
00:33came out and posted a bunch of pictures wearing a commander's hat and kind of issued this statement
00:39to the Niners just to release him and stop playing games with him. That gets the Ayuk situation to the
00:46level of, all right, we've got to ask somebody about it, and the head coach is the only person
00:50we get access to. So we ask. Barry Straluga of the Athletic asked, and Dan Quinn just no comment
00:56to it. Which, there's not much he can say anyway. The guy's under contract with another team.
01:02But he very much dismissed the line of questioning. And there's a general consensus that this is where
01:11Ayuk wants to be. He's said as much, but that the organization wants him also. They just don't
01:16want to have to trade for him. They want to be able to sign him because San Francisco's got to
01:19cut him.
01:20So my question for these phone lines is, do Dan Quinn and Adam Peters see eye-to-eye on the
01:26Brandon Ayuk situation? And I don't know the answer. None of us do. But I find it curious. Let's start
01:34with Anthony in Martinsville. What's up, Anthony? Hey, what's going on, fellas? Can you hear me?
01:40Yeah, we're good. Okay, listen. Let me say this. No, I don't think they agree. And I'm going to take
01:46it a
01:46step further. Yesterday, y'all said that there's no, this is not a tampering situation. But let me
01:53ask you this. Let's say you bring Brandon Ayuk in. Things don't go right. He's not getting the ball
01:57or whatever happened. And they cut him. And then he goes out and put a post out and says that,
02:02yeah,
02:02the commanders was contacting me a year before I came there. And now we in a situation. I wouldn't
02:10trust Brandon Ayuk with a 10-foot pole. I don't want to be nowhere around him. And I think that's
02:15how I think that's how Dan Quinn is looking at it. But I think Adam Peters was there when he
02:19got
02:20drafted in Francisco. So I think I think he's the one that's leading the charge. No, I don't think
02:25they agree. All right, man. It's interesting. He's saying what I said the other day. He has shown
02:37what he does when he's disappointed or he seems like he's shunned. He lashes back.
02:44If something doesn't work out here, would he do the same thing?
02:48Well, there's also the difference. AP has a relationship, right? These guys have known each
02:53other for multiple years. Jaden has a relationship. But DQ is the one that if it goes sideways or
03:00even if it just doesn't go well, he has to manage that daily. Like it will fall on him
03:07more so than Peters or you know what I mean? Like it's it could be complicated and they might
03:15not see completely the same way. Let's go to Alex at Silver Spring. What's up, Alex?
03:21What's going on, fellas?
03:22What's up, bro?
03:23I think it's going to work out, man. Because look, we're under a new regime, a real ownership,
03:30number one. Number two, that brotherhood from Dan Quinn in there. Nobody's thrown under the
03:36bus and this and that. And you know what I mean? And number three, our GM, man, I trust him.
03:45He knows what he's doing. And I mean, how bad can it be? Latimer was in here. We need a
03:51wide
03:51receiver. You know what I mean? It's not like Santa Claus is going to bring in one. We need
03:56a wide receiver. No questions asked. He's young. We just came out of the old folks' home. This
04:03dude is young and he's talented. Let me tell you something. Can you imagine him? Let's say
04:09he do half of what Ayuk is. Not just that. The Bay reporter, what he reported yesterday? Man,
04:17this dude, his work ethic, this and that. What you see on there, that's just from him
04:22being quiet all the time. We're human, man. You can only take with so much and then you
04:26going to blow up. And you know what I mean? After everything else. Because this is petty.
04:30And B-Mitch, look, I know it's not in JP. I know it's not Thursday. Ask B-Mitch
04:34anything. But I got to ask B-Mitch. B-Mitch, man, don't the union step in for something
04:39like this? Y'all paying for this. You know what I mean?
04:42What? But the union tried to step in and he told him no. He didn't want him to go
04:46get his money. That's what the union do. They go and fight for your money. They fight
04:51to get your money. They have lawyers. And he said no. He didn't want that. So why would
04:55they step in now? For what? Yeah. Yeah. All right. Okay. You just answered my question.
05:01And thank you, Andrew. Listen, but Alex, you have a good point, right? He's good. They need
05:05somebody that's good. Bring him in. And I think there's, that's relatively fair.
05:10You got to, you got to bring him in cautiously, not just blindly. Oh yeah. Give him what he
05:16needs. Bring him on in. You got to be careful with that one.
05:19David Lombardi covers the Niners and wrote this via X. Imagine thinking that a player could
05:27take $48 million from an organization and expect to walk away a free agent, consequence free
05:32after not meeting his half of the obligation. There are people on this app who do not understand
05:37how contracts or the world work. That's 100% facts.
05:42Listen, man. He's not in this position just because of the 49ers. Both of them have something
05:51to do with this. And let's be real. You've done petty stuff. They're doing petty stuff. Point
06:07they, they, I was just having a conversation with some people, but I've seen, they've kind
06:11of, they've manipulated a great situation here. Got to show up and they know he got to show
06:17up. They waiting on him to arrest him like you stated earlier. It's crazy, bro. It's crazy.
06:24Yeah. Let's go to Aaron in Suitland. What's up, Aaron?
06:28Not much, man. Not much. Um, I don't think that she out of eye at all, but I want to
06:34ask
06:34B Mitchell question too as well. Um, cause he's been in the league and I know he's had
06:40more interaction than any of us had, but, um, the general manager and the coach, how often
06:45do you talk to the general manager and how often is those interactions important to the
06:52week to week, um, game plan or whatever? Like talk to the general manager and nothing to
06:57do with the week to week game plan. It's more about the rock. You talk. Yeah. When you talk
07:01to the general manager as a player, you talk to him for your contract signing. And the
07:07next time you up again, or if you see him passing, other than that, you don't have a
07:11conversation with him. You're talking to coaches on a daily basis. So the GM is there getting
07:16this roster together, making sure everything's set up and move. And you rarely have communication
07:22with them. Like the player conversations with Peters are probably more like pleasantries
07:27and like, yo, Hey, what's up man? Good game. Or like, Hey, how you feeling? If the, if
07:32you know somebody's fighting the back or an ankle or something, but it, the coaches are
07:36the day to day game planning week, you know, week to week specifics. And I mean, this time
07:41of year, it's all about off season improvement plans. And you know, the coaching staff gave
07:46all these dudes a packet for the off season, what they want them to work on. That GM is on
07:50the phone all the time. Yeah. Doing something like that. But the coach, that's a daily basis.
07:58So yeah, it's a different setup. It's a daily basis. I got, I want to read this to you B.
08:04This is from chill Mo 21. He says, JP, the one thing you guys aren't talking about is what
08:10if BA is built different? Like Sean Taylor was quiet, reserved, incredibly hard to gain and
08:16keep trust. Seems like BA is just a different dude. I don't know the man. So I can't comment
08:24on that. I mean, I'm not going to answer the question. I don't know if he's anywhere close
08:30to Sean Taylor. Why would I assume that? Right. I know what Sean was. I don't know if he's that
08:36guy.
08:37Okay. And I know one thing. Sean was here all the time. He was, he was showing up when he
08:43needed
08:43to show up. Right. So if, if, if, if BA was like a Sean, then I would say, if I
08:50know showing
08:50up, but get me away from this team and I can go somewhere where I want to be, I would
08:54have
08:54shown up by now. Right. It's. And let's, let's just help me out people. He hadn't played
09:03for this team yet. And let's stop comparing them to the great ones. Let's stop comparing
09:06them to people who have played. Let's let him get here and perform and give them all the
09:11love you want. But I'm, I'm getting, as a former player who did something here, I'm
09:16getting tired of y'all giving all this love to people that haven't even stepped in a damn
09:20building just because they say, I want to be there. It is remarkable. Break with that.
09:26The reaction to him posting pictures with a commander's hat on. Do you think Dan Quinn and
09:33Adam Peters view this through the same shared prism? 800-636-1067. 800-636-1067. Let's go
09:41to Drew in DC. What's up, Drew? What's going on, gentlemen, man? What's going on with y'all,
09:47man? Keep, keep doing the great work, man. My thing is, I think they're on the same page
09:51and I'm going to tell you, I'm going to give you two reasons. Adam Peters already know the
09:55scoop on Brandon IU. So that's why they're not denouncing it. He already know what he does,
09:59you know, with a healthy IU. But also, Brian, when it comes to business, you know, the NFL
10:04is a big corporation. You know, they have a bigger mouth than the players. So they have,
10:09you know, they can put a lot of shade on some things to make a player look bad. And, you
10:13know, I've seen some players, you know, you know, some teams, blackball players and stuff
10:18like that, you know, not saying, Blatton, that you have to do this little part, but also,
10:22like he said, you know, you all don't know the real stories, but I know as far as dealing
10:26with business, you know, when you got the big man talking over the little man,
10:29you have the little resource, you can put a certain narrative out on the players. And,
10:34you know, as soon as somebody talks, man, this stuff like grows like wild flies. So I
10:38do think, you know, Brian, Adam Peters, know what he has. And he, you know, because he
10:43wouldn't be in the dressing because they would just denouncing it and say, hey, we don't
10:47know where this is coming from. We moving on with the team. The only thing they said is
10:50no comment. And you know, when they say no comment, it is a comment. Y'all keep up the
10:55great work, man. Stay blessed.
10:56Thank you, bud.
11:00I didn't completely get it, but I understand what he's saying.
11:03I understand what he said about the no comment.
11:05Yeah, but about the, about, like, I know that big corporation and media, in this game,
11:13they can put more stuff out there. But also know if you could do one thing, you can put
11:18yourself in a better situation. And that one thing doesn't mean you talk. It means you
11:23check. This, before this little restaurant thing came out, if he had shown up, they
11:27would have released him by June 1st.
11:29100%.
11:30Point blank.
11:31100%. Or on June 1st.
11:32Right at June 1st.
11:33Right. That would have been done. But now, you've allowed them to come up with another
11:39situation to where if you show up, you might be in trouble.
11:43Right. That's crazy. Our guy Juan is in Fairfax. Juan, how do you think everybody over
11:49here is viewing the potential of adding Brandon Ayuk?
11:54I think everybody's taking it a little bit out of control. I think if he comes over here,
12:00I think he'll be fine. I mean, everybody's just taking it too, too far. That's what I
12:05believe. That's what I believe. Everybody has their own belief. That's what I believe.
12:10And you know what I'm saying? Dan Quinn, he's a players coach. He knows how to deal with
12:14players. You see what I'm saying? And, you know, Adam Peters knows how he is. Now, I
12:19got a question for B. Mitch. Now, B, everybody's talking about showing up. Everybody's talking
12:24about showing up. All you got to do is show up. If he does show up, B. Mitch, help me
12:28out with this. He has to do a physical, right? So, if he does a physical, all they got to
12:33do is, even if he passed, they could just go in and fill him if they want to fill him.
12:37Is that true or false?
12:39If they fail him, then what are they going to do? They're going to release him, right?
12:45Yeah.
12:45They can take him.
12:46They can take him a little more.
12:47They can take him.
12:48They can take him.
12:50Bruh, listen.
12:52I also don't think.
12:53Listen, if he was supposed to be, and he wasn't, so he lost his money.
13:02If he were, he's now on the left of the team list.
13:07If he shows up, they're in a position now.
13:11You can't put him on that list no more.
13:13He's there.
13:14Right.
13:14So, at that point.
13:15I don't think he would have to take a physical.
13:16I don't think he has to take a physical at that point.
13:18He's on the, you don't have to take a physical when you're joining a roster.
13:21At that point, if he's showing up, you can't say he's on this list no more.
13:26So, you got to make your move.
13:27And then the next move is release him.
13:30Yeah.
13:30Yeah, I mean, like, there's conditioning tests when training camp opens, but generally, everybody
13:36except Albert Hainsworth passes those.
13:38So, yeah.
13:40I don't think he has to take a physical.
13:42I mean, they have, they have some cards up their sleeve they could try to play.
13:47They got a lot of them.
13:48And the thing of it.
13:49So is he.
13:50His is the simplest.
13:52But the guaranteed money he was supposed to get, the signing bonuses and them, they're
13:57gone.
13:59That's a salary still sitting there.
14:01A person of his caliber on IR get paid.
14:04He won't be sitting there getting paid nothing.
14:06He'll be getting paid the whole damn year if they put him on IR.
14:11You think they want to do that?
14:12Right.
14:13Because all that, he may have lost that money, but that stuff comes against them still.
14:17Right.
14:17They got to get that off their books.
14:18That is what I'm going to tell you.
14:20So, since everybody want to tell me what he going to do, like you know more, if they
14:27keep him around, that's going to be on their books.
14:30They want that off their damn books.
14:35Well said there.
14:36Let's keep these phones going.
14:38Ace is in Clinton.
14:39Ace, what do you think happens here?
14:40You think everybody's on the same page?
14:43Gentlemen, how are y'all doing?
14:45You know what?
14:46I don't think so.
14:47But I get to the point where, okay, again, this is Brandon and you, Jay.
14:53This guy, if VQ impeded, say, is this a commander?
14:59That's always the question that you hear.
15:03And what would the answer be?
15:05Hell no.
15:06So, what is the pursuit?
15:08I'm not understanding this.
15:10I don't understand the drama.
15:12You guys, if this guy comes into camp and does all he's supposed to do, what about the other players
15:18that are there?
15:19How do you think they're going to feel?
15:21And I think, Terry, this is your position to lose.
15:26I think if he does come, they're going to step up.
15:29They're going to need to step up.
15:30But I think, also, they're showing that they can play.
15:33I think, Brandon, that you already is a distraction.
15:37They don't need them.
15:38And if you look at what happened to them last year, Terry was business.
15:43They don't need another distraction.
15:45Play with what you got loaded in your gun.
15:47They don't need the drama.
15:50That's all I got to say.
15:51That's a great call, Ace.
15:52Appreciate you, Ace.
15:53Thank you, man.
15:53I mean, both AP and DQ say that.
15:56We're looking for people that are commanders.
15:59Like, the name matters to them.
16:02What it embodies, right?
16:04Like, tough, strong, hardworking, leadership-type people.
16:10And it is difficult, with the little bit of information we have, to say that applies to Brandon Ayuk.
16:16Like, but I would add, I'm not sure that that really applied to Marshawn Lattimore, and they traded for him,
16:22too.
16:22Like, the reality is, football teams, these are the biggest rosters in sports, right?
16:27They're at 90 right now.
16:29They're going to be at 70 when we get to the regular season.
16:32You got space for everybody, if they can play.
16:36True.
16:37Being a choir boy is not a requirement to being in the NFL.
16:41Hell no.
16:42No, no.
16:43You can be a renegade.
16:46But you got to be able to play.
