00:00Let's get to the Shane Boz extension. I don't want to say it came out of nowhere, but it was
00:05somewhat surprising when the news came out that it was going down.
00:09The Orioles did give up a lot to get him from the Tampa Bay Rays.
00:13What does this signal in regards to the Mike Elias, David Rubinstein regime?
00:18Because there's still, believe it or not, Rich, a lot of fans out there to think the Orioles are a
00:21little tight-fisted when it comes to spending some cash here.
00:24Yeah, I find that a little strange.
00:31But to quote Kuhlman again, I think there's going to be summer madness around here.
00:37But I think that the Orioles are 16th in payroll right now.
00:43I think it's $167 million.
00:46And there's no team close to its market size that spends more.
00:53You know, all the teams that spend more are in much larger markets.
00:58And I think fans here forget that this isn't New York, this isn't Toronto, this isn't Boston.
01:04You know, it's not the Mets, Dodgers, or Phillies.
01:08The Orioles are spending much more than the Reds and the Royals and the Brewers.
01:15And, you know, other teams that are in similar market size.
01:21But the point about Shane Boz is they're basically buying out two years of free agency.
01:28It's a five-year contract, but they're paying him already for three years of arbitration plus his first two years
01:36of free agency,
01:37which is the same thing they did with Basayo.
01:39They bought out his six years prior to free agency and the first two years of free agency plus an
01:46option.
01:47So they're being, I think, sensible.
01:50You know, they can occasionally spend with big bucks, as they did with Pete Alonso.
01:57But I think that there will be more of these kinds of contracts.
02:01You know, I don't want to throw names out, but let's say they think Dylan Beavers is a really good,
02:08you know, has a really good future.
02:11That's the kind of person that I think that they'd go after rather than spending the huge money on somebody
02:18like Henderson.
02:20I mean, they'll try it.
02:21You know, they've made offers to Henderson in the past, but I think that they'll go, you know, they'll go
02:27that route.
02:27It'll be interesting to see if they'll also look to extend Trevor Rogers and Kyle Braddish.
02:35Those would be two other interesting names to look at.
02:39Now, Rich, you've covered the Orioles for a while and Major League Baseball, obviously.
02:44Can you think of a guy that has been as received as enthusiastically as Pete Alonso has in his first,
02:53you know, weekend series with the Orioles?
02:55And I remember when Manny got called up.
02:57That was very exciting.
02:58But, you know, they had drafted him.
03:00But to bring in an air quotes outsider, has anyone even sniffed the Alonso level of enthusiasm here?
03:06Yeah, I don't think so, because the only other contract that big was Chris Davis.
03:13And Chris was already, you know, Chris was already here.
03:15So that was a re-signing.
03:18So I think that fans really seem to like Pete Alonso, and they're expecting big things of him.
03:25And he certainly played a key role yesterday with that important challenge and then the base hit.
03:33But so I think he's going to have a long and happy career here.
03:37Rich Dubral, BaltimoreBaseball.com.
03:40Joining us here, Vinny and Haney, 105.7.
03:42Get back to something that didn't really impact their weekend series win over the Twins.
03:47But Dean Kramer, going back to Norfolk there and, you know, the tough news that had to come his way.
03:53Was it surprising news when it was announced?
03:56Because I was floored, Rich, when I saw the Orioles email.
04:00I mean, where was that on the stun meter for people that cover the team on a regular basis and
04:05for his teammates?
04:06It was pretty high.
04:08I didn't think that was going to happen.
04:12I thought maybe if they were going to keep him, they'd put either him or Ethwin in the bullpen.
04:20And, you know, when it happened, I was stunned.
04:23And then when we asked Alonso and Adley Rutschman about it, they were pretty surprised because they hadn't heard about
04:32it because it happened when the game was starting in Sarasota.
04:36So I was really surprised.
04:41I still am surprised.
04:43I mean, everything they do pretty much is a surprise to me.
04:48The Alonso signing was pretty much a surprise, except it was sort of telegraphed a day or two in advance.
04:55But I didn't think that that's the direction they were going to be heading.
04:59The Boz and the Basayo extensions were very surprising to me, too.
05:05So I think that they I think Mike Alonso certainly, you know, he he listens to himself.
05:15He listens to the people close to him.
05:17But he plays his cards very, very tight to the best.
05:21He is not he's not somebody that not there's not a lot of leaks coming out of that front office.
05:28Now, Rich, I know it's only been three games, but you had to be impressed with Kobe Mayo offensively and
05:34defensively.
05:34So, right, you are, Vinny.
05:36I think that Mayo sort of at the end of spring training started looking really good at third base.
05:42I think he, you know, he turned a couple of those those good double plays.
05:47So I say on opening day.
05:50So, yeah, I think that that they have something there.
05:53They were very, very wise not to not not to move them.
05:57And it'll be interesting to see what will happen when they bring back Holiday.
06:01And, of course, of course, of course, Westboro, we don't know when that's going to be.
06:06It would be deep into May at the earliest.
06:09So I think Mayo is going to get a long shot there at third base.
06:14And then we'll see what happens.
06:16But so far, so good.
06:18Rich, how surprised were you that Trevor Rogers, they allowed him to go seven in the first game?
06:24Yeah, I was a little I was a little surprised, but he's a he's a he's a tough he's a
06:32tough guy.
06:33He wasn't you know, he wasn't overextended pitch wise.
06:36So I think that that was that was fine.
06:39He worked well and hard in in spring training.
06:42I mean, they're going to be a little more conservative with Kyle Bradish less than two years after Tommy John
06:48surgery.
06:49But I think I think Rogers, they're going to they're going to extend him as much as they can.
06:56Rich Dubrow, Baltimore Baseball dot com.
06:58It sees that it started.
06:59Rich, what's going on on the Web site with Texas in town?
07:02Well, we have coverage of the Orioles every day.
07:06And we would help out from John Eisenberg and Peter Schmuck and Jack Gibbons.
07:11We have quite the murderer's row, I think.
07:13And it's a great site for people who who have yet to get to read it.
07:19And thank you for all those who do.
07:21Rich, appreciate the time as always.
07:23Happy belated.
07:24Happy Baseball New Year to you.
07:26And we'll talk to you soon.
07:27And I'll probably see you down at at Albee's press conference tonight.
07:31I look forward to it.
07:32Thanks very much, guys.
07:34And I got a new haircut, too.
07:36That'll be impressive to everyone down there.
07:37When we come back, it's the whip around.
07:39I'm just joking.
07:40Obviously, drop in D.C.
07:42Duke Blue Devils.
07:43Just hold the ball.
07:43Gotta foul you.
07:44That's all you gotta do.
07:45Just hold the ball.
07:46But when they choked, I was loving every minute of it.
07:48And then the guy hits a 40-footer on top of it.
07:51Had the Duke play-by-play guy crying for a technical foul.
07:54Nah, not gonna happen.
07:56Final Four is set.
07:57Sam Cohn, Baltimore Sun.
07:58We'll talk Orioles and Ravens with him.
08:00And then get back to your phone calls at 410-583-1057.
