Leeds continues to strengthen its reputation as one of the north's leading cultural centres with a new sculpture exhibition at The Sculpture Gallery in Leeds Corn Exchange.

00:00Sculpture North is our annual summer exhibition, something we did the first time last year.
00:06And the idea is to try and put the North on the sculpture map.
00:11So what we've done differently this year is put out a request for submissions across the
00:18UK art world and some overseas.
00:21And lots of people have submitted and we've had the amazing pleasure of selecting the
00:26works that you see here.
00:27Where we normally would have work by the six of us and maybe one or two guest artists,
00:33we've now got work by 28 artists in here at the moment and we're just such a fabulous
00:42array of styles and materials.
00:46It's the sculptural equivalent of Christmas, somebody said to me, which is you just get
00:51all these incredible things that you're able to select from.
00:54And then when they arrive and you see them firsthand and you get to unpack them, you're just
01:01overwhelmed by what they actually physically feel like and their presence.
01:06And then get to arrange them in the gallery.
01:09It's just been incredible.
01:10I just love the whole 3D world.
01:14It's whether it's, you know, I work in wood and stone and plaster and clay.
01:24And there's just something about creating something in the round.
01:31It is the time to produce something, the investment of you within that piece and then showing it
01:39and talking to people about it.
01:41And then the most amazing thing is they absolutely love your work.
01:45You just think, wow, what could be better?
01:47What is just exceptional is the number of people we get through the door.
01:51So on average, we get about 1200 people a month and we get people from all over the country, all
01:59over the world.
02:00And I think the most important thing for me is the people who come in here probably wouldn't go to
02:08the Henry Moore Institute or a highbrow art gallery or sculpture gallery,
02:15which has state-of-the-art contemporary, out there, challenging art.
02:22They're coming in here, they're looking around and they're seeing more attainable, more relatable art from the point of view
02:32of style, material and scale.
02:34The Carl Exchange has been brilliant.
02:36I mean, from our first exhibition, when we all sort of got to know each other to when we moved
02:44into here.
02:44It's such a wonderful place to work.
02:48We've got a really nice bunch of tenants that we know and we can chat with and it's a really
02:56sort of nice environment.
