Bangers and Cash - Season 13 - Episode 09: Willys Jeep/Austin A35/Case Tractor/Hummer
Transcript
00:04on sale this week the 1968 A35 lovely condition runs really well I think the cars they don't
00:15make massive money out of it being a commercial there's very few of them around it's surely
00:20gonna run 12 grand and I'd like to think a bit more that's it everyone loves commercials they've
00:26got a place in our hearts I think really you remember dad coming home with a van or uncle
00:30coming home in a van it's just a lovely little thing to own oh this is a fair machine the
00:36Hummer
00:37climbing what a motor there's something about being in a Hummer and driving a Hummer it's all
00:42American when you're in a Hummer you can do anything you want and we can see over the
00:47hedges go anywhere you want up down Dale across anything this is nice old tractor there very very
00:57special being one owner from new Wow well it's looking good isn't it oh this will be happy
01:04memories driving it yeah great fun it's like a little Aladdin's cave he's between experts at
01:13reversing Wow goodness just mighty tones the Matthewsons a dynasty of classic car auctioneers
01:2955 the joys of an option most people will go to us out with something in mind but come away
01:34with
01:35something different the fun is the chase we'll have a look and we'll advise you from there you
01:39just don't know what's on the end of the phone what you're gonna find when you open them doors
01:43this is a family's love affair with motors that have lived a life testing testing most people will
01:50buy a car because they can relate to it maybe a car that dad had you're selling dreams right here
01:55we go
02:07we're just trying to get everything out obviously after auction really for the usual routine just
02:12been busy we don't know anything else do we just go on don't you go on get stuck in just
02:17shove this
02:17forward you pushing yeah these next two weeks will just be hard out flat out all the time oh that's
02:27easier it's just a big clear out and then within sort of two weeks another load coming back in
02:37with all that going on I haven't actually seen Derek well yeah I to be fair he did pop up
02:43for a
02:43couple of hours yesterday um and then went oh three years of birth I actually don't know where he is
02:50I
02:50don't know how was it in the office busy yeah keep it round I've seen a lot of people here
02:59today the
02:59person I have not seen is Derek yeah tend not to see him after auction to be honest tends to
03:08stay
03:08down at Thornton and Dale or he's usually out collecting something Derek's not laying low he's
03:16been at Thornton and Dale prepping for a visit to an old friend in the East Midlands just if we
03:22see
03:23something and we like it it's reasonable price well that we'll have it there's a point that many
03:29collectors reach when they simply run out of space too many bikes too many cars and they're just not
03:35getting used enough so it's time to have a bit of a move around Robin rests Leicestershire nest is
03:42overflowing so he's identified some items for auction starting with a BSA Bantam d144 it's too
03:50uncomfortable to go far on it and a rather smart Honda CD 175 Japanese bikes are far superior better
03:59brake the a lot better ride some of the old British bikes now when you get on them you have
04:04a job to
04:05stop the things Robin plans to deliver the bikes to Yorkshire at a later date but today he's saying
04:15his farewells before Derek tips up to collect three of his motors yeah a little Austin A35 van lovely
04:23condition runs really well I think the cars they don't make massive money but being a commercial there's
04:31very few of them around they are really saleable things well the Willis Jeep it's a lovely old
04:36thing that is I did in France we've done a couple of the D-Day anniversaries taking some American
04:43veterans round it's just a really really nice thing it's French built it's a 1952 odd kiss and it was
04:52in
04:52the French army and finally there's a hefty 1954 stepside Chevrolet pickup with 51,000 miles on the
05:00clock I bought it on the wind one day all I've ever used it for really is to go and
05:06fetch me firewood in
05:07it they've got the original straight six engine in I believe the 3.8 not the fastest thing on the
05:13road
05:13it's quite noisy you get to about 40 and you know you know you're doing 40 mile an hour
05:19let's have a rattle through prices the Honda I would hope it's going to do somewhere around about
05:252,000 pounds the SA I'd like to think you do between 15 and 16 hundred the little Austin van
05:31we're hoping
05:32that's going to be about 12,000 pounds then the Jeep that has got to be 17,000 and then
05:39finally the big
05:40Wilbur my feeling is somewhere around about 15,000 pounds there's lots of cars there but I don't
05:55think I'll ever see so yeah it's a very nostalgic trip and you've come to see some lovely old cars
06:04motorbikes you know I've got his little wallet with him but yeah we'll have to see fantastic I love
06:12seeing them just you know can't get you take your blood can you iconic yeah it's huge there's
06:24something about being in a Hummer and driving a Hummer it's all American when you do see one over this
06:30side of the water it's like wow that's cool more is in my book anyway and it's the fact that
06:37sitting
06:37in the driver's seat you actually can't reach the other side that's that's quite funny but yeah yeah
06:43no they are cool the Hummer's origins lie with the American military when the Pentagon made a one
06:53billion dollar order for a high mobility multi-purpose wheel vehicle Humvee for short the beast of a
07:01vehicle had a suitably well-muscled fan the one and only Arnold Schwarzenegger who was so impressed by
07:06the Humvee that he persuaded the manufacturers to make a consumer version the Hummer was born these gas
07:14guzzling beer moths ruled the roads for almost two decades until a combination of General Motors
07:19financial problems and high fuel prices saw the Hummer range axed but it wasn't the end because
07:27the Hummer is back with 80,000 pre-orders for its relaunch as a gargantuan electric vehicle the big
07:33beast still costs a small fortune though I think it's too nice to take off-road I mean I assume
07:45that'd be
07:45good one thing I mean they're big and tall and wide and that but this one's done 28 or 29
07:52,000 mile I
07:53think so now I won't take it off road no way it's too good they have to be a pavement
07:58princess for me I
07:58think yeah everything's just twice the size it is over here in it really ah it's just you know
08:06everybody says stuff's like a magic carpet that's a magic carpet it really really is
08:13there you go yeah it's just huge in it it's taking up the space with about three cars in here
08:18anyhow
08:18isn't it no I don't think it is very practical I think it'll use more fuel to get anywhere than
08:23anything else would I mean you can get lots of people in it can't you and you can travel in
08:28comfort
08:28but yeah I suppose when you drive around if you want to get looked at all the time then you
08:32buy one of
08:33these don't you in the showroom no space is wasted awkward small lots are carefully placed in small
08:48spots but in the yard another gigantic vehicle has rocked up the veteran of the Vietnam War weighs in at
09:0010 tons and it's 25 feet long I genuinely think it's fab this M series US Army truck was built
09:09by
09:10Kaiser Jeep in 1959 and it impressed Dave a fantastic bit of kit I think these are brilliant they just
09:18may make everything strong and durable and it lasts forever I love over-engineered stuff why just about
09:25make it so it'll just about do the job why not make it so it'll do the job easily and
09:30forever you know
09:31and that's what these guys do quirky little things I think are brilliant absolutely brilliant yeah I love
09:39it to bits I wish I could justify buying one but I don't really need one I just really like
09:44them though
09:45even down to the axles all interchange so if you've got a problem with that one it will fit that
09:50one and
09:50this particular truck has even got a multi-fuel engine which does exactly really what it says
09:56on the tin just brilliant idea isn't it really that engine will run on just about everything apart
10:00from jam sandwiches really apparently there was three companies that built the engine I think the
10:06only one that's really sought after is they do a turbocharged version which they called the Whistler
10:11apparently because I mean they're a big heavy numb thing anyway aren't they add the fact to the that
10:16they were whistling and apparently you could hear them coming miles away so so the enemy were waiting
10:21for you before you got there they're the ones that people are sort of really are looking for the owners
10:27perhaps being a little bit optimistic personally I think it's six seven eight thousand pounds I mean
10:34that's a fantastic bit of kit for that sort of money in it really the vendor is hoping for north
10:39of
10:3910 there's only one open it's Bob open it and so he ain't gonna do that it does give me
10:47the impression
10:47that it would just go on and on forever you know and it has done so far in it here
10:51it is now yeah
10:53what a brilliant bit of kit
11:14made it a lot quicker if it weren't the bloody traffic after more than four hours of frustration
11:20Derek's landed in Leicestershire oh thanks right let's go and see oh right then rub yeah not bad
11:32all right good to see you there's a job keeping well yeah not too bad good how about business busy
11:38hi it's right surrender it's amazing Derek and Rob rest they're old mates from the trade Rob runs a
11:45local MOT and service center and knows what makes Matthewson senior tick Derek it cakes on that
11:51pallet apparently oh oh good good good what do you reckon do it lovely gorgeous aren't they
11:58nice as a bit of cake I've ever a while so we're taking these three then yeah yeah the van
12:03the jeep
12:03right and this whole beast lovely so she'll go on last first up Rob's dug out a bit of Matthewson's
12:11treasure I'll tell you what we saved some money by not having them printed they cost us 6,000
12:19pound an auction that but that we don't have to do it now because it's all on the computer in
12:23it but
12:24see that good old days I can remember a load of these cars you know no I can't remember people's
12:31names let alone much much else excuse me but I can remember the cars reminiscing over it's back to
12:39business the Chevy pickup just not doing it anymore but it is an exceptional vehicle the motors worth 15
12:48grand because it's so good but it's gonna struggle to make it the little Austin really might surprise
12:56you it's surely gonna run 12 grand and I'd like to think of it more but that sounds sweet that
13:03old
13:03bus don't you what genuine I'll know where that is gonna have Jeep up top little van underneath truck
13:10on the back no trouble that one I'm not sure sure that it's somewhere between 15 and 20 in it
13:20I think
13:21it ought to be auctioneer's discretion and then I'll go for 17
13:28sure do they are bloody awkward things aren't they yeah they are especially when you're a bit fat
13:35here we are I'll watch you on with that Austin
13:42steady on mate hang on that's it yeah hang on a minute yeah yeah we'll have her on then Rob
13:52a bit more lovely that boy well done thank you
13:58right okay thanks ever so much okay look after yourself I'll see you soon
14:01see ya right I'm gonna love and leave you
14:25they look robust let's put it like that I mean yeah they are right for what they are it's it's
14:30unusual
14:30it's different especially in Pickering we don't see many of them flying about
14:39oh this is a fair machine the Hummer blimey what a motor it speaks for itself there look look at
14:45it
14:45really expensive brand new I can imagine I dread to think what the cost new yeah she's the H2 she's
14:50a
14:502006 model a six litre obviously petrol automatic 4b4 yes this is you less
14:57compliant believe it or not 28,000 miles showing one owner since the import into the UK there we go
15:03look what a machine where are we then I see 16 16,000 and then away in one at 16
15:08,000 one hundred and two three
15:10four sixteen four hundred five here with me at sixteen five tell me when you want to jump in
15:15five hundred and six sixteen six and seven then that looks a lot of car for that it's sixteen thousand
15:21seven hundred and eight he says nine back at you it's sixteen thousand nine hundred seventeen thousand
15:27he says at seventeen it's provisional but we'll make a phone call think it's worth more at seventeen
15:32thousand and we all done yes for the first provisional for the second third and last time right it's
15:38seventeen thousand provisional all right nice to speak to you all right thanks a lot take care bye
15:45thank you he was pleased he he wanted to sell it so I think he's yeah he's happy oh we'll
15:50have fun with
15:51this one then but yeah all right thank you bye-bye he had a brand new Hummer at fifty thousand
15:58pounds
15:58some years ago he just loves them more coatable than his Bentley so there you go
16:08Derek's Leicestershire collection has attracted attention across the whole Matthewson family
16:13you can't help but smile can you Dave's casting an admiring glance at the little Austin van everyone
16:19loves commercials they've got a place in our hearts I think really you remember dad coming home with the
16:24van or uncle coming home in a van you remember as kids because as a kid we all just jumped
16:28in the back
16:29of the van didn't you didn't have any seat belts you can genuinely remember an adventure with the
16:36commercial they're absolutely great and the nice thing about this one it's got a rear seat conversion
16:41as well so you can take the kids out yeah they have a tendency obviously to rot that front wheel
16:47throws
16:48all the muck in there and you don't knock it out next thing you know all this area around here
16:52is as
16:52rotten as a pear so the quick way of repairing is you take the headlamp out you take the indicator
16:59off
16:59you take that plinth off and they fill that all over so there's no seam they fill it all over
17:05and then
17:06put the indicator on the front with this little van obviously it still retains its seal down there
17:13and the indicators on a nice plinth so to buy that van what is it going to cost someone you
17:19can buy them
17:19cheaper but I think that van will hit 10,000 I could make the decision as to whether to buy
17:24that van or
17:25not in less than a minute yeah if you need longer than a minute yeah maybe need to get out
17:30a bit more
17:31it's just a lovely little thing to own Charlie's a fan of the pickup it's not a show-winning one
17:43but
17:43it's so honest you could polish it so that it's nice oily rag it and just quick service up and
17:50away
17:50you go got a chip in it there but that to me is originality if you stood 10 foot away
17:56you probably
17:56won't see that it's just patina because if it was rusty there'd be all there wouldn't there and in 10
18:02years time when that's got twice as big then I'd probably paint it but for now I think I'd leave
18:06it as it
18:10is and Dave's second pick is the Willys Jeep real so we just leave it at that I think they're
18:19absolutely brilliant obviously they were designed for a purpose and the purpose wasn't a particularly
18:22nice one was it you know who wants to go to war we're very lucky we do a few every
18:26year they're
18:27smart and up and running you need 15,000 if they're quite exceptional and they've got a load of bits
18:33on I
18:33mean some come with the guns and and all the other fittings and things then they can push on as
18:37much
18:37as 20 yeah not particularly quick on the road though 40 45 mile an hour but that's quick enough
18:42when you've got no door this particular Jeep it's got about the bare minimum it's got the rope on the
18:47front everyone tends to have the rope on the front but we haven't got a pickaxe but you don't often
18:51see
18:52the case for the gun obviously the spare wheel's always on the cans always on and the shovel and the
18:58axe
18:58are just about always on and you can get everything for them that's dead straight in there I love all
19:05the little things like that I mean you know that's obviously got a light guide on anyway so you know
19:09you don't get shot out by a mess with me on your way home tonight yeah if you want to
19:13see what's
19:13happening what's gone wrong there you just turn your headlamp around I mean real cool
19:24we have a clear out and then we have a refill as promised Rob and his wife Sarah have brought
19:32in the bikes to add to the vehicles Derek collected I didn't use them very often we'll have a bit
19:39of a
19:39change yeah as long as you don't change your wife I'll have a bit more space I'll be able to
19:51get
19:51something else to put in the space there'll be something coming along the bike market its peaks
20:02and troughs a little bit I think we've just had a bit of a trough it seems to be a
20:05bit more interest
20:06hmm Paul spotted Rob and Sarah's bikes right yeah little Honda little 175 look lovely little
20:14little lightweight ideal for you guys sick of these heavy British iron and thinking of something a
20:22little more user-friendly good little runabout bike really hmm so I write rate them good little bike
20:29or if you're on a British version you got BSA little BSA little Bantams and such like
20:35brilliant little machines again nice user-friendly lightweight lightweight easy aren't they don't
20:42take up loads of room in the garage put them at the back of the garage still fit your car
20:45in
20:45make a lot of sense value wise how are they standing up these days thousand pound 1200 maybe maybe
20:54a little bit more Honda I would expect the Honda mid to late teens bit more usable different generation
21:03dare I say older generation younger generation bit more in demand supply and demand isn't it
21:27I know you get a lot of tourists in Pickering and Portendale but you're not happy in your work do
21:33you think I make a profit doing this not if you can't go any further than that it's a bit
21:37of a short trip isn't it well we've had it that long
21:41we just shot a space so I'm gonna have to put it outside nope somebody puts a bid in for
21:45it
21:46Peek-a-boo yeah to see if your customers are all right there to get the money out of them
21:51do you think I'll get a Yorkshire man to ride in this well and pay and pay oh no that's
21:57a foot brake for
21:57you and this must be your handbrake that looks to be in a slightly dangerous position yeah
22:04you got your ding-a-ling there as well oh dear I think the ding-a-ling has gone rusty
22:11I suppose it
22:12would do open it but in fact could be a winter's project oh what needs some new tires though because
22:29these are flat this yeah they're both yeah yeah okay no problem that we seem to have got some
22:37pigeons move into the barn so yeah it was a bit sticky but anyway we like we like to be
22:43somewhat
22:43like tidy don't we so I thought we'd just give it all a quick slush off today we are going
22:48only down
22:49towards Moulton to an undisclosed location really and we are collecting an old case tractor that hasn't
22:58moved for some time and I believe it was purchased by granddad their granddad not my granddad their
23:04granddad when it was new so it's around about a 1948 rings a bell don't hold me to that so
23:14I'm going
23:14down there to meet mum and daughter they're only local to us so so I know exactly where I'm going
23:27my family on my mother's side have actually farmed around here for generations well the tractor belonged to my
23:37grandfather when he died it would then be passed on to mum a short hop from Thornton-le-dale Sophie
23:45Hamilton and her mum Marion are preparing for Paul's arrival okay are you ready there I am yeah wow
23:54all right there we go yes well it's looking good isn't it it does look good she was a bit
24:06dusty
24:07wasn't she just a little bit surprising I mean how long has it been sat here other than well 30
24:14years
24:15years this case tractor arrived on the family farm in 1946 it's typical of the machines that helped
24:24transform British agriculture after the second world war it also comes in a very fetching shade of
24:31orange you would see a case an orange tractor in the distance and you would know it was a case
24:36brilliant advertising but also it was health and safety because you you could it was so bright that
24:45if those people about in its way they would instantly get out of the way which is brilliant it's almost
24:52like you know high-vis back in 1946 my father had a thrashing business a contracting business just
25:03very locally around here you know the the winter months were taken up most days going to different
25:10farms it would have been really exciting you know it'd be like getting the absolute high-tech of today
25:17arriving thrashing and bailing all day long when it wasn't being used for thrashing it was being used
25:25for ploughing so a total workhorse oh in fact the chimney's here it goes on that bit over there oh
25:35this
25:35would be happy memories sitting on here yeah and driving it yeah great fun well I I'm one of five
25:44so
25:45there's five girls in our family all my sisters live in the south of England now none of us are
25:50in
25:51farming none of the family you know sufficiently interested to you know to carry on with it so you
26:01know I'm in my late 80s and you know there might be somebody out there who would just enjoy having
26:10it
26:20in pickering auction time sees activity ramped up robin's vehicles are up for grabs oh it is
26:28absolutely original isn't it it's got a rear seat in it the 1968 A35 do you want to do this
26:38one did you
26:38uh I can do only because I've sold it before a very good friend of mine bought this some years
26:43ago 14,000 pound I think it was then lovely lovely lovely van super thing start me on it 10
26:50let's get
26:51away at 10 10 250 10 5 10 5 7 50 11 11 thousand pound absolute stunner I think it's
26:58worth more 11 1 11
27:01thousand 100 might be out put a deal together bring you both together provisional 11 1 provisional
27:08yeah you had a reserve on it of 12 000 pounds we've got 11 100 yeah what's the minimum you'll
27:14take
27:16okay lovely I'll go back to him and see what he says okay thanks Robin bye bye oh well what's
27:2311
27:23and a half 12 grand for it hello you just had a bid on the Austin A35 um I've just
27:29been speaking to
27:29the vendor and he did have a reserve on it of 12 000 pounds but would be willing to sort
27:34of meet you
27:34halfway if necessary yeah number five what are you gonna do with it oh perfect I'm sure I'll accept
27:42that bye bye so he owns a deli and a couple of pubs so the plan is to have it
27:48signed written and then
27:48have it's a little run around for his business perfect oh the Chevrolet GMC we collected it again
27:59same group of cars and I've never seen one more original is it really originally really original
28:04there we go look beautifully mellowed interior and so forth most definitely a keeping vehicle oh yeah
28:09there we go then where are we I've got 10 10 250 10 5 10 000 and 750 at 10
28:16750 11 at 11 000 pound
28:18then in 250 11 250 bid and five 11 500 that looks cheap we'll make a phone call I think
28:26they want
28:26more 11 500 then for the first second third and last time five you've got to do quite a lot
28:34of
28:34negotiation a lot of talking yeah when you're making that call you just never know what the
28:40outcome's gonna be by the time Friday night comes I've had enough yeah it's like take me home put my
28:45pajamas on and don't talk to me the 11 and a half grand offer was rejected but the pickup sold
28:50for
28:5012 and a half thousand at a later timed auction uh 61 hotchkiss to willys g beautiful example well
28:59dressed up super thing whereabouts then start loads and loads of interest 10 11 12 13 13 000 13 5
29:0814 000 14 5 14 500 only 14 5 15 got you 15 15 000 pound all done then 15
29:17000 pound very provisional 15
29:19we all know they're worth more but we'll try and put a deal together for you 15 provisionally only 15
29:27so the reserve of 17 grand we've got an offer of 15 grand they have a great following and if
29:34you get
29:34the right one in at the right price it'll sell robin took the 15 grand on offer and the jeep
29:40went to a
29:40military vehicle aficionado good afternoon how are you how are you how are you keeping very well
29:51thank you good good paul has made the 10 minute trip to pick up the very orange case tractor it's
29:58here somewhere yes it's hiding in this in this shed it only had one owner one driver and what a
30:06wonderful
30:06wonderful thing i think it's great absolutely great anyhow what are we thinking money then
30:13miss hamilton where are we thinking apparently you said to charlotte three to four thousand yeah but
30:19but what are you thinking at the end of the day oh god well no i think we're being advised
30:24by you
30:24we have been totally advised by you right with it being a case with it being in your ownership all
30:31this
30:31time i think it wants guiding three to four uh let's hope we're pleasantly surprised hey it does
30:38seem a bit of a shame it stuck in the barn not ever really being used or seen somebody needs
30:44to be
30:44using it and getting a lot of enjoyment out yeah that's right yeah and i'm sure it's done plenty of
30:49work but of course it's clear to see in it it's been nurtured and looked after which is how it
30:55survived
30:56well we better get her out haven't we like a little heladine's cave
31:04a day of reckoning a day of reckoning he's a bit of an expert at reversing as well isn't he
31:10oh
31:12crikey it is a machine isn't it i don't know quite how this is all going to work really but
31:17we'll see
31:17oh wow oh that's what we're after
31:27just mighty toes
31:32we've got some funny noises going on today haven't we
31:41isn't that a bonnie old tractor though lovely yeah it is
31:47right well i shall hit the road i've got a long way to go you know
31:49oh you have thank you very much paul no problem at all nice to see you so well it's very
31:54nice to
31:54see you excellent thank you very much thanks for coming across okay marvelous see you soon oh well
32:02bye chris hi hi there you go yeah bye bye paul and with all the blossom out well done 79
32:12years yes it is a long time
32:16my lifetime almost
32:33you know when it first came i didn't really like it and now the more i look at it the
32:37more
32:37i like it i don't know what it is i don't know why but the family bought it new to
32:42run a thresher
32:43which basically is combined isn't it really 1946 this was well advanced wasn't it it was almost
32:49too much wasn't it attracted with a pto shaft and they still have them today and it's like you
32:54know from 60 70 80 year ago that was thought of and it's still working now so it was over
33:01engineered
33:02so so much put anything you want on the back of it it's either going to do like
33:07six thousand quid or ten thousand quid isn't it you know it could be anywhere so yeah i think
33:12i know it's a big bracket but it'd be somewhere in that bracket i would have thought
33:20oh this is a nice little tractor there i collected this here and it was purchased new back in 1946
33:28here in ryder just down the road very very special as you'd want to find one there we go uh
33:3418 19 2000
33:36pound bid then and away at 2000 lovely bit of history with the tractor there at 2000 pound bid at
33:422001
33:432-1 at 2000 2-2 it's still provisional malton we'll make the phone call we'll see what we can
33:48do nice if it stayed in malton it would be good yeah staying local there you go look yeah at
33:5322 then
33:53provisionally for the first second third and last time 2-2 malton hello is that marion it's
34:00jewell here at matthews sims we've got the bid at 2-2 yeah no that's lovely all right all done
34:06that's
34:07great thank you very much thank you bye bye there we're happy to accept that well it's not going
34:13too far away it's going probably about another 10 miles uh west so lovely that's a really nice story
34:22isn't it a little under 175 i believe that one you know the auction news robin's motorbikes had a
34:28mixed reception hook 1500 and that's very provisional at once the honda sold for 1850
34:35in a timed auction you all know what they're worth thousand pound to start me one thousand pound
34:41eleven hundred eleven hundred twelve twelve hundred pound absolute bargain surely but the bantam had no
34:47takers and went back to leicestershire and i need more what are you gonna do with that oh lord that's
34:54a bit interesting a bit quick no engine to run on just about everything if you're peeing the tank it
35:00run by the sound of it so 8 500 what a bit of kit 9 000 250 got more machine
35:06we need a bit more money
35:08the kaiser truck also failed to attract a buyer and there's one other item that looks like it will
35:15never sell what we got here bloody rickshaw bloody thing's been around forever innit how long has this
35:21actually been here about five years i think they're good sellers you know you know we get a lot of
35:27this
35:28stuff abandoned on us you know someone brought it down and thought ah i'll bet that one might 500
35:33quid and it's getting bit of 45 quid and it makes them realize then it ain't worth anything so leave
35:40it with them they'll sort it out i ain't got the legs for pedals anymore so it's of no interest
35:45to me
35:46whatsoever in fact to be perfectly truthful look it's a death trap innit you know you know what i want
35:53really rather than this sitting here i want this bit here clear that's what i want whoever owns it
35:58come and get it get it gone please derek's wish was granted the rickshaw is no longer in yorkshire
36:04the owner came back to collect it when you're in a hummer you can do anything you want and we
36:23can see
36:23over the hedges go anywhere you want up down dale across anything we're so lucky having this you know so
36:33lucky the resplendently blue hummer hasn't traveled much further than its hefty wheelbase
36:38to find a new home it stayed in yorkshire it's now owned by retired businessman john paley and he's
36:46loving it oh it's just like riding on air it's just pure elegance it's just pure comfort it's just so
36:54silky it just takes everything in its stride you know you feel absolutely nothing with the big
37:00tires and the air suspensions the ride comfortability and everybody said oh i can't believe it i can't
37:08believe it john loves showing off his new purchase it's a main machine look at tires you know it just
37:16looks the pattern today it's his grandkids connie will and jacob it is yeah it's like new
37:25isn't it even the odd fault is easily sorted that's it that's it it's back on that's pretty typical
37:37and this is no short-term fling it's a long-term love affair that started when john hooked up with
37:44a
37:44friend who was a car dealer let me have a look at one of the numbers and as soon as
37:49i heard it as
37:49soon as i saw it just poised lovely i said right order me one and that was my first one
37:56within 2002
37:57it was a black one i had that two or three years and i got a pickup one called a
38:02soot which had the
38:04bull bar on the front and then i woke up one morning and i realized i had eight cars and
38:10i thought
38:11why do i need eight cars and we had them all sold within a week everybody thought i'd gone bankrupt
38:18because i sold all these cars which i haven't but the hummer bug never totally disappeared and a trip
38:24to pickering revived it this hummer was sat there and i just walked around it opened the doors looked
38:31i said it's mine i'm having it simple as that the bug was well and truly back after buying the
38:38blue hummer
38:39he bought a black one to go with it it's cool isn't it yeah i mean it's not the first
38:44one but
38:44maybe not not might not be the last one either but uh definitely a head turner all the seats are
38:51like
38:51feel rock hard nice and comfy go to sleep if you're on a long car drive if you want they
38:57just go anywhere
38:57you can take them off road and go anywhere you want and people get out your way so you feel
39:02like the boss
39:05it's great to look at on the drive but it's out on the road where john and the hummer are
39:09happiest
39:12a hummer well there's nothing like it it is to me the the vehicle
39:19well i think someone in a midlife crisis
39:43i've always loved the look of the willys jeep and then my father he was in the army during the
39:51war
39:51and he said that he drove one and he said they were absolutely brilliant he said you could drive
39:57them anywhere the hotchkiss willys jeep which has stood in a civilian garage for the last few years
40:04has been reunited with some fellow military travelers new owner errol now has the chance to trundle
40:11through the fens that surround his home in ramsey in cambridgeshire with some nostalgic enthusiasts
40:18well you have to watch the road all the time especially around the fence because the roads
40:22are sinking and you'd soon be in the dark or wherever no it's a job to explain it is
40:29just puts a smile on your face
40:33buying the jeep means errol can now team up with a gang of local aficionados
40:37mark chrissy and lindsay who have a vast amount of experience when it comes to military vehicles
40:44i love the noise and the smell of it i really do go in the garage
40:49as errol is finding out it takes some handling when you're driving one of these you're really
40:54in contact with the road yeah you know when you're driving the modern car you can steer it with one
40:58finger if you like you know don't take your mind off the road or other drivers for a single second
41:02you get arnhem arse cheek one buttock goes to sleep if you've been driving it for too long and
41:07you keep shifting around in the seat trying to make a little bit more comfortable it's just a shame that
41:11dad weren't allowed to see that i've got one it's like my grandson he loves anything to do with
41:16second world war i'm going to take it to the the junior school where he is for for a day
41:23just so
41:23the kids can sit in it and and everything it seems that perhaps accidentally errol has bought a fine
41:31example although there were teething problems bit disappointed when i got there because i couldn't
41:36get behind the steering wheel why how i come back and i had a word with mark i said i
41:44couldn't get
41:44behind the steering wheel he said take the padding off the back of the seat that's why i've got no
41:49padding
41:49on the back of the seat how the hell did john wayne get energy good how did that happen
41:58the driving might not be about comfort but it's an experience all the same oh people always stop and
42:06turn and look at it put their hand up and wave the wife's been in it yeah yeah yeah she
42:13wasn't very
42:14keen to start with oh no no seat belts no airbags but when you're in you have to smile you're
42:21small
42:21because you ain't doing 100 mile now you're only doing 30 40 miles an hour but there's also a serious
42:28side to running around the fens in convoy when you ride these back rows in these vehicles you instinctively
42:35know you're retreading the path that the americans did prior to d-day these rows were absolutely littered
42:41with these vehicles yeah whenever i drive mine i mean i forever think of my uncle drove one in the
42:47desert yeah 1942 in benghazi yeah and then got captured for the next umpteen years in prisoner
42:53of war camp you can't help but think about those things yeah i agree these linked amount remember
42:59these vehicles are a symbol of freedom uh there was a hard-fought freedom
43:05oh i love it to bits love it to bits you know my grandson i took him out backed in
43:11his drive his
43:12mom come out and he said to his mom i hope granddad don't sell this
