00:00.
00:36Welcome to the Packers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana.
00:40It's an NBA Friday night on ESPN and EA Sports as we get set for the Indiana Pacers.
00:47Looking for a win here at home tonight against the visiting Dallas Mavericks.
00:52As this one gets underway, what's the game plan here for the Pacers?
00:55When you're playing this team, you better account for the 2011 Finals MVP, Dirk Nowitzki.
01:02Surefire Hall of Famer. Hey, there's no question of that.
01:05This guy started the revolution of stretch shooting, three-point shooting foreman in our league.
01:13Because he could shoot it, now people have to extend, and what does he do?
01:17He drives it by him, right or left. Finishes with either hand, and then if you foul him, lights out
01:22him.
01:23This guy knocks it in at such a high clip that you've got to keep him off the free throw.
01:36You know, Jeff, so much made of DeAndre Jordan not going to the Dallas Mavericks.
01:40That's got to hurt, although they recovered by getting a couple of other good key players.
01:44But, Mike, they thought they had a defensive cornerstone to their program in DeAndre Jordan.
01:52Yeah, they got Zaza Petruvian, who I think has always performed better than he's been given credit for.
01:58I love his toughness.
02:00But to lose DeAndre Jordan is going to set them back for quite a bit of period of time.
02:12Sends it into the post.
02:13All over him, still takes the shot.
02:16Unable to flip it in.
02:17It's hard to close out on great shooters.
02:20Tremendous job right there, getting his hand up, mirroring the ball.
02:25Throws the alley-oop.
02:29Parsons into the front court.
02:32Oh, no.
02:33He just crushed the defender with the slam.
02:36Now that's how you finish strong at the rim.
02:38That was worth the price of admission right there.
02:51You know, Ellis, Jeff, one of those guys that you like from a standpoint of,
02:54you know he's going to be out there and play every night.
02:56Two times he's led the NBA in minutes per game.
02:59Yeah, and that's not easy, Mike.
03:00To average over 40 minutes a game, that's hard to do.
03:04Now, sometimes that comes with taking some possessions off defensively.
03:08That's not what you want.
03:10But he has great stamina.
03:11He has great durability.
03:13You want your best players on the floor and available.
03:17And Ellis has been able to provide that for the teams he's played for.
03:25There's the perfect pick.
03:29Nice little dump-off.
03:32George fires with the clock winding down.
03:35Drains the three off the quick release.
03:38Paul George with five points.
03:40You don't have a lot of room over there in the corner.
03:43You got to get your feet set, get on balance, and stroke it.
03:48Williams for two, puts it up.
03:51And Darren Williams with the nice look, sinks it.
03:54Look, the screener's man has to work harder to prevent the jump shot by the ball handler.
04:01He's got to get up with his man and either switch or show, but be more definitive.
04:08He's just hanging back in the lane.
04:10That's just not going to get it done.
04:13He says go, but the ref says foul.
04:16Called against Nowitzki.
04:17And it's on to the line for a couple of free throws.
04:20I love the way the NBA player can contort his body, take contact, and get the ball up to the
04:29basket, even when being fouled hard.
04:32First free throw.
04:33Perfect.
04:37Jeff, two years ago, the Pacers were in the conference finals.
04:41The Pacers were in talk of a possible championship contender.
04:44Where are they now?
04:45Again, hard to decide, Mike.
04:48Larry Bird made a huge jump and leap of faith in the offseason to disband what had been good for
04:57the Pacers.
04:57Playing slower, more methodical, defensive oriented.
05:01This is a vastly different team.
05:03With a vastly different style.
05:06And we'll see if they get the results they're hoping for.
05:13Here's the pick.
05:16Williams finds room off the screen for the shot.
05:19And Darren Williams with the bucket.
05:21He's averaging 13 points per game this season.
05:24That's just beautiful offensive basketball.
05:27To shoot it and not even notice the guy who's contesting the shot.
05:32Nobody near him.
05:33Takes the three.
05:34And Monte Ellis with the bucket from downtown.
05:37This man makes it look easy.
05:40Shooting the ball from deep.
05:42Three, George Hill.
05:44To Matthews.
05:47Moving the ball around beautifully.
05:50Takes another shot.
05:51The Mads with the offensive rebound for another possession.
05:55Nice touch at the basket.
05:57Oh, look at the use of the body to create the space to get the ball up and in the
06:03basket.
06:04Nice job.
06:09He's averaging 18 points per game this season.
06:12Curls in.
06:14Let's it go.
06:15Ellis' shot for two.
06:17Misses.
06:23Big acquisition in the offseason for the Mavericks.
06:26Darren Williams, at one time, maybe the best point guard in the NBA.
06:30What do the Mavericks hope he can get back there, Jeff?
06:32Back when he was with Utah, Mike, people were talking about he and Chris Paul, who was the
06:38better point guard.
06:39And there was a legit argument to be made for both players.
06:42He goes to Brooklyn, he has some injuries, and now he comes to Dallas.
06:48Back home, the Mavericks need him to be great.
07:00Stepping in for Dallas, number five, Jose Marea.
07:07Stepping in for Indiana, number 33, Kyle Favre.
07:22So he hits the first and misses the second.
07:27Hill.
07:29Stuffs it in the rim.
07:31Oh, that's a sweet finish right there.
07:33Dunking the ball with strength and force.
07:36This is from number three, George Hill.
07:44Out-of-bounds turnover.
07:55One minute remaining in the first quarter.
07:58To McGee.
08:07Fires as the shot clock expires.
08:09Puts it in.
08:10A two-pointer.
08:11One-point lead for Dallas.
08:13That's pure talent right there.
08:15To be able to make something out of nothing.
08:19Good defense, better offense.
08:21For three, the wide-open shot.
08:25Oh, beautiful pass.
08:27I'm talking about three.
08:34And now he moves around the defender.
08:37He dishes it.
08:40There's the pick.
08:42Moves around the defender.
08:44Tries it again.
08:45Gets that one to drop.
08:47Two.
08:51Hands up, hands up, hands up, hands up.
08:59To Ellis.
09:03Excellent ball movement.
09:04Great teamwork.
09:06To Ellis.
09:07He's averaging 18 points per game this season.
09:11For three.
09:14First quarter complete.
09:16The Pacers up by three.
09:18We'll have more Friday Night NBA from ESPN after the break.
09:41Second quarter about to get underway.
09:43High scoring first period.
09:45Anybody going to get any stops in this one?
09:47Yeah, this is like an all-star game with very good offensive players
09:51who are not committed defensively.
09:53It plays well in an all-star game,
09:55but you can't win consistently like this.
09:59From three-point land,
10:01Stuckies off the mark from downtown.
10:10And he curls in.
10:11Puts it up for two.
10:13There's the whistle.
10:14Good job to draw the foul.
10:16And he'll head to the line to shoot two.
10:18Man, I thought that was going to be an end one.
10:21Good strength just flipped out.
10:26Off the mark on the first free throw.
10:43Knocks down the second after he misses the first.
10:56Moving the ball.
10:58Excellent teamwork.
11:01Stucky.
11:06Stucky finds the wide-open look for three.
11:09Misses from beyond the arc.
11:11That's not a stop.
11:12That's just a miss.
11:14The other team, wide-open shot.
11:16Not good enough defensively,
11:19especially when you're trying to set a tone
11:21going forward in the first half.
11:23It's good.
11:24Dallas is shooting 61% from the field here tonight.
11:28Oh, that's nice right there.
11:30Good layup.
11:31Good finish.
11:32Match up, match up.
11:33Match up, match up.
11:34Stay, stay, stay, stay.
11:36Okay, three.
11:37Stucky for two.
11:38Let's it go.
11:39Can't connect.
11:46To Parsons.
11:49Fires away for two.
11:50Able to put it in.
11:52Two-point lead for the Mavs.
11:53This is the type of action we've grown accustomed to in the NBA.
11:58This back and forth where the lead change often throughout the game.
12:03This is exactly the type of exhilarating basketball that I would pay to see.
12:09To Stucky.
12:10They tip it and get the turn-off.
12:15For the layup.
12:16Soft touch gets the roll.
12:18Hey, that's one you just have to tip your hat to the shooter.
12:22Knocked in a contested two-point shot.
12:29Nice ball movement.
12:33To Budinger.
12:39To the basket.
12:41And the rebound read by Villanueva.
12:46Pass to the corner.
12:49In the paint.
12:50No question.
12:51Yep, that's a foul called against the Pacers.
12:54Second team foul.
12:55And he'll go to the line to shoot two.
12:58Look, you've got to put yourself in position to be fouled if you're a good offensive player
13:03and a great free-throw shooter.
13:05Take advantage of your strengths.
13:07Earn your way to the free-throw line.
13:12Entering the game for Indiana.
13:14Number 13, Paul George.
13:18And number 33, Miles Turner.
13:27Good free-throw shooter.
13:28Knocks down a pair.
13:30And looks like we've got a 20-second timeout.
13:33Jeff, the coach has some decisions to make right now.
13:35When you're using your 20-second timeout, it can be done for different reasons.
13:39Here, I think what they're using it for is a quick play to break this run
13:44and try to get a well-executed hoop.
13:47Coming out of the timeout.
13:49The team needs to refocus.
13:52The coach has to do it at a timeout.
13:54He can't get it done on the fly, on the floor.
13:58Wesley Matthews is checked in again.
14:03Stuckey set to bring it up.
14:06The screen is set.
14:08At the rim.
14:10And he's fouled.
14:12And Rodney Stuckey will get to the free-throw line to shoot.
14:15He's shooting 81% from the line this season.
14:18I really like what I saw there.
14:20Good strength.
14:21Good athleticism.
14:23Took the foul.
14:24Got up a nice shot.
14:25Just didn't roll in.
14:40And gets both points from the line.
14:46Dallas is leading Indiana by a score of 24-20.
14:53To Parsons.
14:57Making the defense work with excellent ball movement.
15:00Unable to flip it in.
15:02That's the mark of a great defensive team.
15:04Great closeout.
15:05Great contest.
15:06That's the way to get it done.
15:08And it's a backcourt violation called against the Pacers.
15:12Indiana.
15:20Ball's back in.
15:27To Parsons.
15:43For two.
15:45Jumper won't go.
15:46That's a tough shot right there.
15:48Solid team defense forcing the miss.
15:51To Budinger.
15:54Budinger for two.
15:55Hits the shot.
15:56The Pacers down by two.
16:10To Villanueva.
16:11Lots of room there.
16:13Won't go for three.
16:14Hey, they may have missed that shot.
16:16But that's the type of execution in the first half.
16:19That sets a great tone going forward.
16:23George against Matthews.
16:25Oh, excellent screen.
16:26Fires from three-point range.
16:28The Pacers with the offensive rebound to keep it alive.
16:32Let's it go for two.
16:34He rattles it in.
16:35When you play that good a defense and you contest the two-point J,
16:39you expect a good result there.
16:41The offense was just superior.
16:43The concentration and the follow-through.
16:46He stuck his shot.
17:04Coming in for the Mavericks, number 41, Dirk Nowitzki.
17:11Dirk Nowitzki, stepping in for Indiana, number 27, Jordan Hill.
17:19Shutdowns forced to make the pass.
17:21Knocks it down.
17:22Good job off the double team from Dirk Nowitzki.
17:25Okay, now that's just lucky.
17:27No one makes a game plan based on forcing shots through double teams.
17:31That was just pure luck, and he got his wish granted.
17:36Turner's unable to hit the three.
17:49To Nowitzki.
17:51He's averaging 17 points per game this season.
17:54He draws the contact.
17:55Yep, it's a foul called against Hill.
17:57That's his second foul, and Chandler Parsons will go to the line
18:02with under a minute to go in the second.
18:04Hey, you don't see strength like that very often.
18:06The way he got fouled just to get the ball up into the rim
18:10was a great achievement.
18:23The Mavericks, with control on the rebound, unable to flip it in.
18:27You work that hard, you have to reward yourself
18:31and reward that work by making that shot.
18:34Here we go.
18:34To Stuckey.
18:36He's averaging 12 points per game this season.
18:42Hill's looking to do damage in the paint.
18:44Stuckey fires for three.
18:46Can't connect from long range.
18:49Rodney Stuckey's 0 for 3 from outside.
19:01Terrific ball movement.
19:03Parsons!
19:04He revows the whistle.
19:05He's got a foul.
19:06And Chandler Parsons will go to the line.
19:09He's 0 for 2 from the line tonight.
19:11Hey, you can't allow easy baskets.
19:14You've got to foul these bad free throw shooters,
19:17put them to the line,
19:18and see if they can earn their points at the charity strike.
19:34And he's able to hit the second after missing that first one.
19:44Turner.
19:53To George.
19:57Nice movement around the perimeter.
20:01Time winding down.
20:03He just flips it up.
20:04That's it for the first half.
20:06The Pacers down by three.
20:09And now time to hand it over to Jalen Rose.
20:19Hey everyone, it's Jalen Rose.
20:22And I've got your EA Sports Halftime Report.
20:29The Mavericks have themselves a narrow lead,
20:32and the offensive glass was their domain.
20:35They score plenty of second chance points,
20:38asserting themselves in the paint.
20:41Have a look at the leading scores for the Dallas Mavericks.
20:49The Pacers are within striking distance at the half.
20:53They've been able to stay competitive with their offense,
20:55particularly because of how well they shot the ball.
20:59It hasn't been excellent,
21:00but it has been reliable.
21:03Have a look at the leading scores for the Indiana Pacers.
21:11Game track.
21:14Bench points.
21:17What I found interesting about that half of basketball
21:20is how the momentum stayed high,
21:21even when the substitution started coming into the game.
21:24These guys coming off the bench,
21:26from both benches actually,
21:28are doing a great job of making positive contributions.
21:33And now I'll put the screen,
21:34the first half stats.
21:39Player of the half.
21:43Paculia is the right choice for this halftime selection.
21:47He made it pretty obvious that he's feeling it here today.
21:50And it's looking like that momentum
21:51is going to continue until the second half.
21:53Make sure you stick around and check it out.
22:02Who was cold?
22:07Stuck definitely fits the title of this second.
22:10He can't claim a single point that was scored by his team,
22:13but he can claim quite a few of the three-point attempts.
22:17It's been a disastrous game for him.
22:22Here we go with the top plays from the first half.
22:26Number three.
22:31Number two.
22:40Number one.
22:46All right, back to the second half.
22:48I'll see you after the game.
22:54Welcome back to the Banker's Life Fieldhouse
22:56in Indianapolis
22:57for the second half of this basketball game.
23:00Along with Jeff Van Gundy,
23:02Mike Breen on hand.
23:03Indiana's back in another nip and tuck battle.
23:07Jeff, for them to get a victory,
23:08what do they need to do?
23:09It just seems like every game we cover right now
23:12is close and down to the wire.
23:13This one looks no different.
23:15And because it's close doesn't mean you play any different.
23:19You just got to stick to your game plan.
23:21Do what you do best.
23:23Stay away from your non-strengths and grind it out.
23:29Williams against George.
23:32Fires away for two.
23:34Oh, he got hit and they call it.
23:35Draws the foul.
23:37Called against George.
23:38Dallas is shooting 50% from the line.
23:40I love the way the NBA player can contort his body,
23:46take contact,
23:47and get the ball up to the basket
23:50even when being fouled hard.
23:55My boy, my boy.
24:08Dallas is leading Indiana by a score of 31 to 26.
24:17Hey, Jeff, we know Monte Ellis can score.
24:19How does he fit in with these pacers?
24:21I like the fit between he and George Hill.
24:24I think they needed more creativity from the back door.
24:28And George Hill is a good spot-up shooter.
24:30So George Hill, he'll have that calming presence.
24:34He'll start and set a great defensive tone.
24:37He'll play off Monte Ellis offensively.
24:40And Monte Ellis can do what he does best,
24:42which is to get to his right hand and attack the basket.
24:58George, a long-range jumper is off the mark.
25:02Indiana is not having the kind of offensive consistency
25:06you need to win in this league.
25:09They just can't seem to get into a rhythm.
25:12Jump shot won't go.
25:13When you defend, you always have a chance
25:16to come back and win a game.
25:18Out of bounds.
25:20It'll be Pacers ball.
25:28Oh, he goes for the save there.
25:30It's deflected, and they come up with it.
25:32Gets to the rim.
25:33Good work to draw the foul.
25:35Wesley Matthews picks up his first person of the night.
25:38And it's on to the line for a couple of free throws.
25:40You want to win in this league?
25:42No easy baskets.
25:44Make them earn it at the free throw line,
25:47particularly the bad free throw shooters.
25:50First free throw, good.
26:11Second one off the mark.
26:13He goes one for two.
26:18To Matthews.
26:20He's averaging 15 points per game this season.
26:23Knocks it down.
26:25That's a two-pointer.
26:26Dallas is shooting 56% from the field.
26:30Wesley Matthews.
26:34To Ellis.
26:39Screen set nicely.
26:41Ellis on the drive.
26:43Let's it go.
26:44The Pacers with the offensive rebound
26:46for a second chance opportunity.
26:49To Ellis.
26:56George against Parsons.
26:58Shoots it for two.
27:00George's attempt won't go.
27:04Matthews bringing it up.
27:09Parsons fires away.
27:11Able to connect.
27:12And it's now a double-figure lead.
27:14Chandler Parsons with five points.
27:18And Frank Vogel calls a 20-second timeout.
27:21The mid-range game has disappeared
27:24for the most part in basketball today.
27:27It's nice to see good execution
27:29resulting in the mid-range jump shot.
27:42Dallas is leading Indiana by a score of 37-27.
27:54Here's the screen.
27:55Pucks it up from three-point land.
27:58He sinks it.
27:59And that's the fifth three-pointer for the Pacers.
28:02You're not going to see a better possession
28:04in the NBA from both sides of the ball.
28:08Good defense.
28:09Good offense.
28:10Good offense won out that time.
28:12Williams jump shot.
28:14George the rebound.
28:18To George.
28:20George forcing against the smothering defense.
28:23He's fouled.
28:24Dirk Nowitzki picks up his second.
28:26And Paul George will go to the line
28:28and shoot for the first time tonight.
28:30It's hard to score in this league.
28:33But you have a better chance
28:35if you're a great free-throw shooter
28:37to do it at the free-throw line.
28:39This is good basketball right here.
28:41Be aggressive.
28:43Take the contact.
28:44and get to the free-throw line.
28:50Substitutions, Dallas.
28:54Substitutions, Indiana.
29:06goes 2-for-2 at the line.
29:11Dallas is leading Indiana
29:13by a score of 37-32.
29:18Off the fake.
29:20Can't get it to go down.
29:30To George.
29:31Paul George with 10 points
29:34and one steal.
29:42Moving the ball around beautifully.
29:44Inside.
29:45Won't go.
29:46You've got to figure out
29:47how you can get
29:48a better quality shot
29:50and use your greatness
29:51to attract the second defender
29:53and find the open man.
29:56To Stuckey.
29:57Gets it.

40:02That was a well defended possession, but that man stuck it even against the best defense.
40:08Hooks it up for three.
40:10Can't hit from way outside.
40:20Inside to the basket.

40:36Moving the ball around beautifully.
40:38They double him.
40:40Strong to the goal.
40:42Lays it home off the great feed from Dirk Nowfinski.

42:47Two free throws.
42:49They need both to make it a three-point game and force their opponent to shoot a three-point shot.
43:09One for two at the line.
43:11It's now a two-point lead.
43:14And Frank Vogel calls a time with very little time remaining in this one.
43:18You're down late in the game.
43:20One possession game.
43:22What you need to do is not waste time.
43:26You've got to catch it and attack the basket.
43:29And then take the first quality shot you get.
43:38And then take the last one in a row and keep it safe.
43:44It's up here.
43:49You've all been filled.
43:53We haven't gotta really fire.

45:23And a timeout taken here in the final stages of this game.
45:27Coaches get paid to put their teams in position to win, but in the last minute of a game, you've

45:55Sends it to the corner.
45:58To Williams.
46:00He's averaging six assists per game this season.

46:14They're really getting after each other on both sides of the floor.
46:18Dirk Milwitsky.
46:21Sends it to the rim.
46:27So now he's having to turn out to Germany.
46:32Sends it to Hans.

48:03You ask me, and I'll tell you.

48:07There's something to be said for a team that can win as a group,
48:10and that's what happened here today.
48:17The Pacers lost a tight one today, and you can see the disappointment.
48:22Their field goal percentage was respected.
48:25I'll give them that.
48:26But in the end, it needed to be better for them to get the result they wanted.
48:30Check out the leading scores for the Indiana Pacers.
48:44The reserve from each of these teams made an impact on this game,
48:47and that's exactly what you want to see as a coach.
