US President Donald Trump said he remains optimistic about securing a trade agreement with India despite new tariff proposals that could complicate ongoing negotiations. Speaking at the White House, Trump praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and expressed confidence that both countries would reach a mutually beneficial deal. The comments came as trade officials from the US and India continued discussions on an interim agreement in New Delhi. However, proposed US tariffs on imports from several countries, including India, have added uncertainty to the talks. Both sides say they remain committed to strengthening economic ties and advancing trade cooperation.

00:00Well, we have it, and, you know, look, India for years has, and I don't blame them, I blame us,
00:06because we're stupid people here. India for years really took advantage of the United States,
00:11you know that. Are you from India by any chance? Huh? I thought you were from Germany. I'm only
00:17kidding. You're central casting, okay? And that's a very good thing. India for years took advantage
00:24of this country. They charged us tremendous tariffs, and they paid nothing. They wouldn't
00:30let Harley, as an example in the past, they wouldn't let Harley Davidson sell its motor.
00:37They would charge 200% tariff, so Harley Davidson was precluded. They ended up going to India and
00:43building their own plants, which is unfortunate that that happened, but that happens. It was
00:49before me. But they charged tremendous amounts of tariffs to our companies, and we didn't
00:55charge them anything. You know, they sell, sold motorbikes here, too. You know what we
00:59charged them? Nothing. And now it's the exact reverse, and we're making a lot of money with
01:05India, but we'll get to a deal, because I like, you know, I like your prime minister a lot.
01:11He's a good friend of mine. Get along great, and we're going to make a deal. We have a very
01:14good relationship.
