WASHINGTON — PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP GREETED INDIAN PRIME MINISTER NARENDRA MODI AT THE WHITE HOUSE WITH A BEAR HUG ON THURSDAY AND CALLED HIM “A GREAT FRIEND OF MINE,” BUT NONETHELESS WARNED THAT INDIA WON’T BE SPARED FROM HIGHER TARIFFS HE’S BEGUN IMPOSING ON U.S. TRADE PARTNERS AROUND THE WORLD.
During a joint press conference at the White House, President Donald Trump warmly welcomed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, referring to him as "a great friend of mine." Despite this camaraderie, Trump emphasized that India would not be exempt from the heightened U.S. tariffs imposed globally. He criticized India's high import duties, labeling them as "very unfair and strong," and reiterated his commitment to implementing reciprocal tariffs to ensure a level playing field for U.S. manufacturers. This stance underscores ongoing trade tensions between the two nations, even as they explore avenues to strengthen their economic partnership.

00:00Now it's finally time after 45 or 50 years of abuse that we will do,
00:05and this isn't India, this is among a lot of nations.
00:18We miss you, we miss you a lot.
00:30India has been to us just about the highest tariffed nation anywhere in the world.
00:55They've been very strong on tariffs and I don't blame them necessarily,
00:59but it's a different way of doing business.
01:00It's very hard to sell into India because they have trade barriers, very strong tariffs.
01:07We are, right now, a reciprocal nation.
01:10We are going to, if it's India or if it's somebody else with low tariffs,
01:15we're going to have the same.
01:16We're going to have whatever India charges, we're charging them.
01:18Whatever another country charges, we're charging them.
01:20So it's called reciprocal, which I think is a very fair way.
01:25We didn't have that.
01:26I was going to do that in my other term,
01:29and we had the greatest economy ever in the world.
01:31There's never been an economy like we had.
01:34And then we got hit with COVID.
01:35We had to focus on that.
02:25If I were to say this,
02:56borrowing an expression from America,
03:00our vision for a developed India is to make India great again, or MIGA.
03:11When America and India work together, that is when MAGA,
03:20when it's MAGA plus MIGA, it becomes MEGA.
03:28A MEGA partnership for prosperity.
