00:00Chairman of the PNM and MP for Aruca Lupino Marvin Gonzalez made the announcement on Wednesday night during a candlelight
00:08vigil in the Kwese in San Juan.
00:10Tonight, we wish to serve notice to the government that we have already assembled our team of attorneys who will
00:21be prepared to go to the court and file a constitutional motion to bring an end to this unlawful and
00:30unconstitutional state of emergency in Trinidad and Tobago.
00:36The statement is happening against the backdrop of a week of protest action pertaining to the charges laid against Kaya
00:43Sealy for the Joshua Samaru killing which saw the arrests of three protesters and a walk for peace on Wednesday
00:51where a woman was also arrested.
00:53Restrictions on places of protest due to the SOE has been a talking point of the government, but some view
00:59it as a curtailing of rights and a silencing of their voices and democratic freedom.
01:04Opposition Senator Sanjeev Boudou challenges the purpose of the SOE, saying that murders, including that of children, continue across the
01:13country and even in broad daylight.
01:15But they are saying to us that crime is down.
01:19The only restrictions, true restrictions, that this SOE has introduced are restrictions on the activities and lives of us law
01:29-abiding citizens.
01:31Don't speak. Don't protest. If you protest, don't protest in certain places.
01:37On another note, Boudou questions why the government waited for maxi-taxis across the country to go on strike instead
01:45of meeting with them to avert the strike.
01:47His conclusion is political experimentation in a bid to distract and control.
01:53This government is experimenting on us, the people of Trinidad and Tobago.
01:58This government has come up with the idea that a starving man does not fight for freedom.
02:05A starving man fights for bread.
02:09A starving man does not fight for democracy.
02:14A starving man fights to feed his family.
02:18And that, my ladies and gentlemen, is what tyrants do.
02:23Meanwhile, Gonzalez says the government is in for a fight.
02:27We will march on the bus routes.
02:29We will march on the highways.
02:31We will march on the byways.
02:33We will go to every community and we will prosecute you.
02:37We are not afraid of you because power belongs to the people of Trinidad and Tobago.
