00:00Craig is one of the highest-paid managers in the league.
00:03If we're going to sit here and go after the highest-paid players on the Cubs
00:07and say, you've got to produce, the manager is wide open.
00:10If you want to just narrow it down to how much money he makes, absolutely.
00:15Have at Craig.
00:16I don't know that I would do that in terms of the money thing.
00:18That was a choice.
00:19That was an organizational choice.
00:20He didn't pay himself.
00:21But I will say this.
00:22Wait a minute.
00:22You don't think that for those who are paid more, more is expected,
00:26whether you're an athlete, a manager, or whatever the case is.
00:30I think sometimes organizations make bad decisions in terms of how much money
00:34they pay people to do different tasks.
00:36And here's what I'll say.
00:37I think it is more overrated than it is anything else, and here's why.
00:42I think Craig Council is a good manager.
00:45We know that.
00:46He does more with less.
00:47We've seen that, whether it's here or whether it's in Milwaukee.
00:51And I think the real issue here is this roster is not good enough,
00:55not dynamic enough.
00:56And when they were winning earlier in the season,
00:58when they jumped out to first place in the NL Central,
01:00it's because Craig Council was literally pushing all the right buttons.
01:04He was.
01:04And you go back to last year, too, and talk about the bullpen usage
01:07and the way they kind of darted around that, not having guys.
01:10They just find guys to do stuff.
01:12But right now you're seeing a roster that's not good enough to compete
01:14with the best team in the division, clearly the Milwaukee Brewers,
01:18a team they were up three and a half games on,
01:20and now they're down six and a half.
01:21That's a 10-game swing in what, the course of a month?
01:24It doesn't mean he's above reproach.
01:25It means that he's getting the same sort of criticism that his team is getting.
01:29All of it is up for examination.
01:32And because he commanded this salary,
01:34the Cubs paid him based on the idea that he was going to be a game changer in this.
01:39And generally thought of as one of the best managers in the league.
01:41This wasn't a fluke payment.
01:42It wasn't a fluke.
01:43So when you need to light a fire under somebody's butt here,
01:46who are you going to?
01:47You're going to do that.
01:47You're going to do that.
01:47You're going to do that.
