00:00I think, you know, they were both extremely impactful.
00:03But Dubon's changed the game because at the point, you were down 2-1.
00:08Dubon has 32 RBIs.
00:10His career high is 47.
00:11But he's on track for over 80.
00:13I think 87 might be the number he's on track for.
00:17We're on pace for, however you want to put it.
00:19He pointed at Chipper afterwards.
00:21I don't know the meaning of that.
00:23Maybe that they have the talk.
00:25Chipper was obviously at the game for other reasons.
00:28But maybe they've been working together.
00:30But can we talk real quick about what Grant Holmes did?
00:33Because Grant Holmes...
00:34Before we move on, I just want to point out,
00:36the Suarez thing, I think, had to do with the fact that he was already up
00:41right before the home run.
00:43And he had already been getting loose.
00:45So I don't think he's sitting back down at that point.
00:46I mean, I think we've seen guys warm up before and not come in.
00:50But maybe that's...
00:51You know what?
00:52I mean, it's not a huge deal.
00:54I was just curious of why.
00:55You know, it's one of those deals where you see a guy that could literally be
01:00your closer, you know, and he's your holder or stopper or whatever,
01:07you know, the setup man, whatever you want to call it.
01:11It's just curious with a five-run lead.
01:13But Grant Holmes loads the bases in the first inning, gets a double play,
01:18one run scores, then gets out of it, and gave up zero runs after that.
01:24Well, one more run after that, excuse me, off the home run.
01:26But he recovers to grind.
01:29I don't even say grind.
01:30I thought he was pretty good after that for six innings.
01:32So he gave you six innings.
01:34And I continue to hear people just, oh, the pitching staff's not been good
01:38outside Chris Sell.
01:39I just wholeheartedly disagree.
01:41I think Bryce Elder had one bad inning.
01:43I mean, excuse me, well, really, one bad inning in Boston.
01:46But it would turn out to be a bad outing.
01:49And other than that, Bryce Elder is giving you quality starts.
01:52Grant Holmes, quality starts.
01:53Martin Perez, you know, five to six innings.
01:56They haven't gone as deep as you want.
01:58But as far as what they're doing, they've been good.
02:00And Grant Holmes, you know, added into that.
02:03And he's still, he's really now putting pressure on Perez to see which one of them
02:10will go to the bullpen.
02:10Well, I was going to say that.
02:12Grant Holmes was playing last night.
02:13Last night, like, he knows, and he does know, that his job is on the line here.
02:18He wants that starting spot.
02:19And so he went for it last night.
02:21We do need to fix your algorithm, though, Bo, because I'm not seeing people be
02:24that negative in mine.
02:26Oh, no, no, that was verbal.
02:27I didn't see it on Twitter.
02:28I heard it.
02:29But it's from people that are always negative.
02:31And I don't think I have an understanding of the game.
02:33But it's all good.
02:34I think, though, Mauricio Dubon took so much pressure off Grant Holmes.
02:38Gave him some breathing room so he was ready to just settle in.
02:41Yeah, no, I agree.
02:42And I think Grant Holmes was good.
02:44I do think he grinded a little bit.
02:49He grinded in the first inning for sure.
02:51Yeah, but even after that, like, the hard hit rate was, like,
02:56they were squaring the ball pretty good at times throughout the tenure.
02:59And what's interesting about Grant Holmes is I think he's the opposite
03:02of Spencer Strider right now.
03:03Like, Spencer Strider's movement, his velocity, everything is at a higher level.
03:10Did you want to get in right there?
03:12No, no, no.
03:12I got something after you.
03:13I got something.
03:14I had an epiphany, so to speak.
03:17Well, Grant Holmes, to me, when you watch him throw,
03:19he's not like throwing meatballs out of the plate.
03:22As a matter of fact, the home run that was hit off him was well inside
03:25and had good movement on it.
03:28He's like the opposite of Spencer Strider.
03:31Spencer Strider is throwing balls out over the plate and still getting great
03:34movement, but he's getting timed up, and the ball's going the other direction.
03:37Grant Holmes is trying to nip and tuck and be more Bryce Elder-like,
03:41but it doesn't seem like he's getting the movement that he desires
03:43on a lot of his pitches, and for that reason, he's getting timed up pretty good.
03:47What do you put more stock in?
03:51A guy that goes out there like Chris Sell and is going to strike out 10 or 11
03:56and go six or seven innings and throw and give up two runs,
04:03or a guy that at times will give up hard-hit balls but find a way to go six innings
04:11and give up two runs.
04:12And, look, Grant Holmes doesn't do that every time.
04:14But I saw – I actually – this is where my algorithm was good, Allie,
04:18because I saw this conversation pop up, and someone was crapping on, I believe –
04:23might have been Elder, or it might have been a pitcher that didn't even pitch
04:26for the Braves.
04:26I just – I don't remember exactly, but they said this is a problem.
04:32Some of you put more stock on just mowing through people but still giving up
04:36the same amount of runs instead of a guy that can just – that can pitch out of –
04:40in and out of things.
04:42What if – I think they're both equally, you know, impressive.
04:47I do know that power pitchers win in the playoffs,
04:51and Grant Holmes has enough power, which is something that Bryce Elder doesn't.
04:56It's why Elder, to me, would probably be a guy that – I'm not sure where he would line up
05:00if you added Waltrip, and now apparently A.J. Smith-Shauver is closer than ever expected.
05:06Dude, I was so stoked to see that.
05:07Yeah, I was too.
05:08I asked y'all about him last week.
05:10I don't know if we were on there or off there.
05:10I was like, did he mention anything about A.J. Smith-Shauver in that interview?
05:13Because, like, he's got to be floating around there somewhere other than with
05:16Jose Canseco's daughter.
05:18I thought he was – I didn't even know that was his girl.
05:20I thought that was an afterthought, honestly, A.J. Smith-Shauver this year.
05:23That's why I was so disappointed about Shwelley.
05:25But it – people – and that's why I had that little bit of a gasp,
05:34and you're like, well, he's a hard-hit rate.
05:37Because it hit me and it's like, does it really matter?
05:40Because you have – I mean, I know it does in some ways,
05:43but if you – you might give up a hard-hit ball,
05:45but if you can come back and strike a guy out or pop a guy up,
05:49getting out of it is what matters the most.
05:51And the ability to grind out and get out of things is how you win ballgames.
05:56I agree with that.
05:57I definitely agree with that.
05:59I think that there's a fine line, though, where we talk about pitchers getting to contact,
06:05right, getting weak contact, or players that are squaring a ball up
06:08and hitting them right at people.
06:09Because I think on the brave side of it, we've seen guys that have struggled
06:12as far as their average goes, and you're like, dude, he's lacing the ball right now.
06:16He's just hitting it right at guys.
06:18Ronnie's hitting it, you know, 109 off the bat,
06:21just going straight at the center fielder.
06:23And at the same time, you know, you can look at it and you can see, like,
06:26Hasan Kim last night gets a hit and gets off the schneid,
06:29but it was, like, off the handle of the bat,
06:31and the guy didn't even try to get under the ball,
06:33which I still don't even know what the left fielder was doing.
06:35Well, there's just, there's nuance to, levels to it, I believe,
06:40when a pitcher's pitching in contact, as opposed to the strikeout pitcher.
06:43It's an array to me.
06:45But to me, that's part of where the game has gone,
06:47is that hard hit balls are a part of the game because of the defensive alignments.
06:53And that's, I mean, obviously they made adjustments to the shift,
06:57but there's still areas of the shift that are in.
07:00I saw, I think it was Riley last night,
07:03got robbed of a base hit because of a shift.
07:06I think Hasan Kim, but the...
07:08I think Ozzie did, too.
07:09Yeah, the second baseman was essentially lined up in the middle of the back.
07:13Yeah, who was that?
07:14Was that, I saw the same play you were talking about.
07:16That was Austin Riley.
07:17I think Hasan Kim was a victim of it, too.
07:19I thought Hasan Kim might have had his best game last night from the plate.
07:22Well, I don't want to leave this conversation without giving them their flowers.
07:25I mean, Hasan Kim and Austin Riley, they're waking up.
07:29They're waking up, guys.
07:30There you go.
07:30They're coming back.
07:33What was that left field doing?
07:35I don't know what that was.
07:37Did he get distracted by something?
07:39Were you worried that it was going to be a little league inside the park home run?
07:42I don't think it had that trajectory.
07:43It was interesting.
07:44That was very, very interesting.
07:46Tonight, Chris Sale is on the mound to close out the series.
07:49This hour is brought to you by Morgan & Morgan.
07:51And Kyle Pitts is giving us some insight on who he is as a player
07:55and why he's about to have a breakout year.
07:58That is next on Sports Radio 92.9 The Game and the Odyssey app.
