Germany’s foreign minister says Berlin’s support for Ukraine and Israel may have cost it votes in the race for a U.N. Security Council seat, describing the country’s defeat to Portugal and Austria as a “bitter” setback.

00:00Germany's foreign minister says Berlin's support for Ukraine and Israel may have caused it votes
00:06after failing to secure a seat on the UN Security Council.
00:10Johan Waderpul described the result as a bitter defeat after Germany lost to Portugal and Austria
00:16in a vote for two Western European seats on the council.
00:22Waderpul also suggested Russia had worked against Germany's bid,
00:25saying it was no secret that Moscow had stirred up opposition to Berlin's candidacy.

00:34Germany received 104 votes compared with 134 for Portugal and 131 for Austria.
00:42Kyrgyzstan, Trinidad and Tobago and Zimbabwe were also elected to the 15-member Security Council
00:48for two-year terms beginning in January 2027.
00:51The Security Council is the only UN body empowered to take legally binding actions,
00:57including imposing sanctions and authorising the use of force.
