Grant & Danny debate if the juice is worth the squeeze for Brandon Aiyuk when he actually becomes available.
Transcript
00:00Grant and Danny coming your way on the fan. Thank you for listening to the program as always. Means a
00:07lot.
00:08Brandon Ayuk had a warrant issued for his arrest today in California.
00:13Stemming from the viral video months ago, he drove by the stadium, flipped the bird at the home of the
00:22San Francisco 49ers,
00:23and showed his speedometer as he was going 104 miles an hour in a 40 mile an hour zone.
00:30So, that immaturity and that bad decision has cost him now a charge in that town.
00:38And we're asking you, should this factor into the conversation for the commanders in any way?
00:43Does it alter how you feel about wanting to go get Brandon Ayuk?
00:47And how do you think this ends?
00:49Do you think like I do, like Danny does, that they're going to sign him?
00:52800-636-1067. 800-636-1067.
00:57Reggie's in D.C. What's up, Reggie? How are you?
01:00Hey, man, what's going on? I love the show.
01:01Hey, listen, man. Hey, granddaddy, I think his team, man, has told him, don't say a mumbling word.
01:09This is 2026.
01:11Wide receiver, not to get wide receiver, athletes post everything from the littlest to the smallest.
01:17You mean to tell me you couldn't post a bag of Cheetos, you couldn't post your toenails, something?
01:21Listen, I think his team is like, listen, we got to keep this quiet.
01:25We don't want to piss the 49ers off more than what they are, because if I'm the 49ers and this
01:30dude shows me he's ready to play,
01:32I'm going to put you on my roster and I'm going to make you play for us.
01:35Or I'm going to put you on one of those TOs that are actively active and make you sit down
01:40for a while.
01:41Keep it quiet and don't say, you're just not going to convince me that at 25, this dude, I'm done
01:48with football.
01:49As far as the speeding, I think Nolan Smith just got caught speeding.
01:52Miles Garrett speeds all the time.
01:54Shadon Sanders got a couple.
01:56So, again, it's stupid.
01:57These bozos, these days.
01:58Were they recording it and flipping off the stadium of the team that's giving them millions of dollars?
02:03You're right.
02:03You're right.
02:04So his is dumber.
02:05Yes, I'm not going to hold that against him.
02:09But the fans and all those people don't think that Jaden Daniels has not spoke to that boy probably yesterday.
02:19We're fooling ourselves.
02:20I'm not saying that, because what did he say?
02:22That's my friend.
02:24We're close.
02:25Whatever he said, as far as him playing.
02:27Hey, that's out of my pay grade.
02:28I don't have anything to do with that.
02:30Let Danny disappear for a while, and there's a contract dispute.
02:34You don't think he talked to Grant?
02:35Absolutely.
02:36Here goes, Grant.
02:36Hey, listen, you know, Danny's doing okay.
02:38You know, I'm not sure what's going on.
02:40You know, but we'll find out.
02:41Grant knows.
02:42Like, you don't think Jaden knows?
02:44Yes, he is going to be a commander.
02:46Do I like it?
02:47What was the guy for Cleveland?
02:49What was it, Josh Gordon?
02:51That just kept getting chances.
02:52Because everybody was holding on to, like, that ability.
02:55The promise, yeah.
02:56He's got to give this kid one more chance.
02:58And again, am I, like, a huge fan of it?
03:01No, but I'm holding on to, we're going to get the good Brandon Ayuk versus, you know,
03:06the jerk Brandon Ayuk.
03:08Appreciate the call.
03:09The call's always ready.
03:10I love, first of all, it is a great call.
03:12A lot of good points.
03:12I love the Josh Gordon reference because it brings me back to a superstar wide receiver
03:18who was so talented and so gifted that he was going to have more lives than a cat in the
03:23National Football League.
03:25Okay?
03:25Brandon Ayuk is only 28.
03:27And he's only a couple years removed from having been one of the best wide receivers in the National Football
03:32League.
03:33Back in 2023, second team All-Pro.
03:35But, Danny, here's the problem.
03:37He has only played seven games out of the last 34 regular season games.
03:43He has missed over a year and a half of the last two years.
03:48So, what am I suggesting?
03:51Well, if he was coming off of that 1,300-yard year where he was a second-team All-Pro
03:56last year,
03:59then I'm not as concerned about him having problems with the Niners or the immaturity in the video
04:05because the juice is worth the squeeze.
04:08Because we're not putting together a group of Boy Scouts.
04:10We're trying to win football games.
04:12And I know he's going to come ball out.
04:14You have no idea if he can play anymore.
04:16He has not played in going on almost two calendar years.
04:21That's a long time.
04:23We have no idea what kind of football he's going to be capable of.
04:27My answer, non-insubordination, non-eccentric at best, you know, malignant at worst, behavior, legal troubles, whatever.
04:39My answer is no besides that because of the medical.
04:43And, again, it's unfortunate.
04:44It sucks.
04:45It's reality of pro sports.
04:46Let's talk about a 28-year-old like he's my age and has his schedule as colonoscopy, right?
04:50But that's what it is.
04:52That injury was so catastrophic.
04:53And the whole center of this gripe, again, was him not rehabbing.
04:57Who knows if he did it away from the facility.
04:59Would have been a great thing to let people know, by the way, that your rehab is going splendidly, has
05:03gone splendidly.
05:04You're good to go.
05:05So, even if you're not trying to piss off the 49ers more, you should still let someone know that the
05:11knee is okay.
05:11We don't know.
05:13We have no idea.
05:14The history of guys not playing for two years, basically, and just walking back onto the field and being A
05:19-okay in their former selves, it ain't that long.
05:22So, just from a medical perspective, I've got no interest.
05:25This is radioactive.
05:27Wouldn't touch him with someone else's 10-foot pole.
05:28You add in the other stuff, and again, I don't even want to brush it away like it's the other
05:33stuff.
05:33The other stuff's a giant tent with so many items at this flea market here of nonsense.
05:38Pick any one of them and they're disqualifying.
05:40You put that whole package together, and I cannot remember being less interested in a player.
05:44I also wonder why, in the seven games before the injury, he was playing at a level below his career
05:52average.
05:52It didn't look right, Grant.
05:53It didn't.
05:53Eight yards per target in those seven games.
05:57The year before, when he got paid, the Deron Payne contract year, breakout kind of year, 12.8 yards per
06:04target.
06:04That is an incredible difference.
06:06Even his worst career year before that, you know, when he had gotten going as a veteran, was like nine
06:11yards per target.
06:13But it was not the same.
06:15If you look at, like, yards per game, he went from 60 to 83 to down to 53.
06:20Now, it was a small enough sample that through seven games, I kind of assumed, all right, well, over the
06:25last 10, he would have cooked.
06:26You're a 174-yard performance away from all your numbers, being back on pace.
06:31You know, you can't overreact to a third of a season or whatever.
06:34But he was not playing at the same level.
06:37And that's the only tape you've got since he re-signed.
06:41And you just never know.
06:43Do I think he just stopped engaging the way that he did as an athlete and as a studier and
06:48as a worker before that?
06:49No, I don't think so.
06:50That would be very, very rare.
06:52There aren't that many examples of guys like that.
06:54But he played at a lesser level for seven games, then had a career-altering injury, hasn't played since, and
07:01has the weirdest non-rehab, strange falling out with a team that we've ever seen before.
07:06These are just the facts.
07:07And today, he's charged with a crime.
07:10And there's a warrant out for his arrest because he taped himself committing the crime.
07:15Now, I mean, what are we doing here?
07:18Golly.
07:19Think about it.
07:20This is – I know it's speeding.
07:21It's not, you know, shoplifting or doing stuff.
07:24No, it's – yeah.
07:26Did you tape yourself doing the illegal thing that got you in trouble?
07:29Then I got questions about you.
07:31I mean, it's – that's just day one stuff.
07:34That's ridiculous.
07:35The caller, Reggie, a few minutes ago had mentioned what Jaden Daniels said about Brandon Ayuk.
07:40For people that don't know, he was asked about him this offseason and whether or not he's advocating to bring
07:46him in here.
07:47Because the thought within the fan base and I think from the local media is we know Ayuk wants to
07:53play with Daniels.
07:54Presumably, Daniels is pulling the strings to get him here.
07:57This is all that Jaden Daniels has actually said publicly about Brandon Ayuk to D.C.
08:02I don't know.
08:03I don't have a sense on it.
08:05That is my brother, and we have a personal relationship.
08:08But his football future, that's out of my control.
08:11What did you make of that answer?
08:13Yeah, I said at the time it was – I thought it was a terrific answer.
08:16I still do.
08:18It's a way to kind of head off any follow-up.
08:22It's a way to also not hide from stuff but also answer without answering it.
08:27To me, it's a master class in PR where you're admitting – not that it's like some sort of gotcha.
08:32It's not wrongdoing to be friends with somebody.
08:33But you go, yeah, of course I'm friends with that guy.
08:35You know, we share a bond that is different than most other folks.
08:40I was in school with that guy.
08:41He's one of my best friends.
08:42As he said, he's like my brother.
08:44Next paragraph.
08:46I'm not the GM.
08:47His football future, I do not know what that holds.
08:50I have no idea.
08:51Whether he does or not, by the way.
08:53Any answer that's like, yeah, I want him here, that looks bad.
08:56Or I don't give a damn what happens to him, that looks bad.
08:59Or I've already been lobbying Adam Peters, that's not the greatest look in the world.
09:02Well, it's a very diplomatic answer to go above my pay grade, dude.
09:06I take snaps and I hand it off to Ja'Cory Krosky, Merit, and sometimes I'll find Chico Conquo.
09:11That's my job.
09:12I love that answer.
09:13But that to me was a, I know, but I ain't telling you.
09:18I agree with that.
09:19I also don't think there's any way that Jaden Daniels would behind the scenes say, let's not bring in Brandon
09:27Ayuk.
09:28They're so close.
09:29They have such a good relationship.
09:31In the league, being in locker rooms and covering it to the extent that I have for as long as
09:36I have,
09:36one of the things you realize is, I hate to say it in a way that's so lame, but like
09:40game recognizes game where,
09:43like if you're a really good player, Danny, the players just love you.
09:46You know what I'm saying?
09:46And in Brandon Ayuk's case, everybody knows how good that dude was.
09:51Arizona State, Daniels played with him.
09:52And early in San Francisco, incredible talent.
09:56So you know you can't help but want more receiver depth, even if Jaden thinks that this group's better than
10:04you and I think it is.
10:06Then it's your best buddy, a guy that you're going to be hanging out with every day,
10:09a guy that you're going to be, you know, going shopping with and eating with and doing everything with when
10:14he gets here.
10:15There's just no chance, in my opinion, that behind the scenes he's going, hey, Adam, I don't know if this
10:20is what we want to do right now.
10:22Let's just let him do his own thing.
10:25I'm not sure if it's a great fit.
10:26My guess is he's absolutely trying to get him here.
10:30How strongly is the thing that we'll never know, I think?
10:33I would imagine very strongly.
10:35Again, like, he's a college teammate and a best buddy.
10:39Right.
10:40But do you think it's every day he's bothering Adam Peters, half jokingly, half serious?
10:44No, because I think they've both known it's a done deal for a month, if I had to guess.
10:49You know, I think it's a – when they moved on from Cliff Kingsbury and they had some tough conversations,
10:55I would bet,
10:56about just their relationship and the team relationship and where everything's headed, I'll bet you, you know,
11:03they said, okay, let's – how can we get you comfortable?
11:05What are you looking for?
11:06What are you thinking?
11:08And they were going to hire Blau one way or the other, but I think that was an area where
11:12they were able to extend a bit of an olive branch.
11:14Win for them to hire the guy they wanted.
11:16Win for Jaden Daniels to keep a familiar voice from his quarterback room in an influential role around him in
11:23the building.
11:24But my guess is, okay, let's talk players.
11:27Let's talk about a couple of guys in the – you know, maybe pile here.
11:31What do you like about this guy, that guy?
11:33And I'm guessing Ayuk's name came up.
11:34Or when it became obvious that he was being traded or would be, you know, on the block or would
11:39get cut,
11:40they go to him and he goes, yeah, absolutely, let's do it.
11:43And this is how the league works.
11:45Like agents call teams.
11:47Teams talk to players.
11:48If they don't want to do it directly to risk getting in trouble,
11:51then they talk to the guy who washes the car of the buddy of the other – you know what
11:55I'm saying?
11:55Like there's just ways to get that information.
11:58So, yeah, I think that whatever's going to happen, they already know it.
12:03If that means he's getting cut and he's coming here, they got a pretty good feel for that.
12:06And if they've already told his party – I don't think this is the case – hey, we're not going
12:11to be signing him,
12:12then that's probably already happened too.
12:14But I think come training camp, you go out to Ashburn in July, you're going to see Brandon Ayuk running
12:19around.
12:19What do you think Peters thinks in his heart of hearts?
12:22That to me is the question I care more about.
12:24Daniels, you know, right?
12:25They're buddies.
12:26Do you think Peters is going – when I was there in San Francisco, it was pretty good.
12:30So we can get back to that.
12:32I can unlock that.
12:33Or is he going, I've got to do this favor for Jaden Daniels or somewhere in between?
12:37Like what do you think Peters' eval is?
12:41I think it's going to cost so little that you're going to go the route of what he did in
12:49San Francisco is not who he is.
12:51And this has now become worth it.
12:53The juice has become worth the squeeze.
12:55It's one year.
12:56It's a minimal contract.
12:58It's a massive upside play.
13:00We are just taking a flyer, kicking the tires.
13:03And the way you sell it to Harris if you need to is if it doesn't work, we can cut
13:07him.
13:07We can get out of this.
13:08I remember Michael Winger was on Ryan Rissolo's show.
13:11He had this really good quote about – I think Rissolo asked him a question like,
13:15what have you learned or what's something you would tell young GMs?
13:18And I think he was talking about Trey Young.
13:20But he said, one thing I've learned is basically the book on a player doesn't always have to be the
13:27book on that player.
13:28Like the way that they act or the way that they operate in one organization might be different in a
13:33different place with a fresh start.
13:35I'm paraphrasing.
13:36But I think GMs think that way.
13:38I think you look at James Harden and you go, yeah, he was a pain in the butt for that
13:41team.
13:42But he'll be our closer here.
13:43You know, they look at the guy that blew nine games last year and they go, we'll fix that reliever.
13:49I think they do it the same way from a makeup standpoint, honestly.
13:51Sure.
13:52Yeah.
13:52Our building's better.
13:53Our culture's better.
13:54They don't have the secret weapon of Dan Quinn in his ear to fix it.
13:56And there are enough success stories in sports where changes, we say it all the time, a change of scenery
14:01candidate's a real thing.
14:02And you don't get to the top level without believing your bleep don't stink.
14:06Right?
14:06So your change of scenery is better than their scenery.
14:08And we'll fix it and we'll figure it out.
14:10There's an arrogance there.
14:11I'm not saying Peter specifically, but at the top of pro sports for sure.
14:14Grant and Danny on the fin.
14:16Speaking of the NBA, I do want to preview game one of the finals, which tips off tonight.
14:22We'll do that in our final segment coming up in about 20 minutes at 6 o'clock.
14:26Next, there's a player who has eaten Chipotle every single day for an ungodly amount of time.
14:32I'm going to give you the details.
14:33We'll get Danny's reaction in a moment.
