Brandon Aiyuk is a great receiver on the football field, but is he worth the baggage he carries?

00:00But I would say at this point, kind of the biggest lingering dangling participle, if
00:07you will, is the status of Brandon IU.
00:11It's become pretty clear out of San Fran.
00:13They're in no hurry to release him.
00:15Maybe they think they'll be able to generate a, if I had to guess, a conditional draft
00:21pick closer to the draft.
00:23I'm sorry, a conditional draft pick closer to the draft.
00:26Frankly, I don't expect that to happen.
00:29It could, though.
00:31But the Brandon IU connection with Washington, the Brandon IU connection with Jaden Daniels
00:36has always been a factor.
00:40But I found this really interesting.
00:44T.J. Hushmanzada was a damn good wide receiver for those Bengals teams when the Bengals were
00:49pretty good.
00:50They had Carson Palmer dealing.
00:52Then Andy Dalton got there.
00:54Hushmanzada had 2,000-yard seasons.
00:56This is a guy that scored 44 touchdowns in 11 NFL seasons.
01:01When it was Hushmanzada and Chad, he was then Chad Johnson.
01:06He became Chad Ochocinco.
01:10But he could play, man.
01:12And now...
01:12Chad 8'5".
01:13Exactly.
01:14It wasn't 85.
01:15It was 8'5".
01:16Now Hushmanzada is a wide receivers coach.
01:19He does some football analysts for FS1.
01:24Hushmanzada knows the receiver position, knows what it takes to play in the NFL at kind
01:31of a high level.
01:32And I thought this was really interesting.
01:37He does a lot of training with NFL wide receivers.
01:42Most NFL players...
01:44I don't know if fans understand this.
01:46Most NFL players have their own at least trainers.
01:52Guys that work them out in the offseason.
01:55I've been to some of these offseason workouts in various cities.
01:57There are really famous gyms, especially the South Florida, Dallas area, and then Southern
02:03California, where these guys all work out.
02:06And then a lot of, especially skill position guys, work with their own position coach in
02:12the offseason.
02:12Jaden does it with the quarterback's coaching.
02:14Lots of guys are doing this.
02:15So TJ being a wide receiver coach makes a lot of sense.
02:20He worked with Roma Dunze.
02:23He does a lot.
02:24He's also worked with Brandon Ayew.
02:26And I want to give proper credit to the podcast this is from.
02:31I think this is from Speakeasy.
02:33Is that the podcast we're lifting this from?
02:36Hopefully I'm getting it right.
02:37This is a late night sports show that streams on YouTube with Acho.
02:42I think Shady McCoy.
02:44Yeah, LaShawn McCoy.
02:45And I think the host is a dude named Kieran.
02:49So the Speakeasy podcast had TJ Hushman Zada join them.
02:54And they asked him about Brandon Ayew.
02:57Listen, man.
02:58I know B.A.
02:59I haven't talked to him in a while.
03:01Know him very well, though.
03:01But I haven't spoken with him in a while.
03:05What's the question again?
03:06Should any team want Brandon Ayew?
03:08Yeah.
03:09I'm answering.
03:09Yes, they should want him.
03:10Okay.
03:10But you got to be careful.
03:12And I say this.
03:13I like B.A.
03:17But I said this last week about Stephon Diggs.
03:20And this normally only happens when a player starts to get older.
03:23B.A. is still really young, fast, quick, explosive.
03:27But what he did last year is kind of crazy.
03:31You got all this guaranteed money.
03:32You ain't showing up.
03:33You're getting fined.
03:34And you basically forego, what was it, over $30 million, right?
03:37Over $30 million?
03:39Like, if you're a team and you give him a good contract, is this what you're going to get?
03:45Because this is what he has shown us.
03:47Sign his deal with the Niners.
03:49Bad luck he gets hurt.
03:50Don't want that.
03:51But it's how he handled everything after that.
03:53Yes, he's going to get signed.
03:54But if you're a team, you got to structure that contract the right way.
03:58You got to make sure that you protect yourself because of what he's shown you to be.
04:03You know John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan.
04:06They talking to their people across the NFL.
04:07Telling them everything that went down and how it occurred.
04:09And so, yes, I would want him on my team.
04:11I would.
04:12But it got to be at the right price.
04:13I got to make sure financially that we are protected as a team and organization.
04:17Because I've never seen anybody do this at so young of an age.
04:20Got so many years ahead of him.
04:22I just have never seen this.
04:24So, B has a question for you, Strober.
04:26Strober, did you have that on extra fast or something?
04:28Because he don't talk that damn fast.
04:31I just played what was in the folder.
04:33That was fast.
04:34It sounded like 1.3.
04:36Yeah, it was moving, dude.
04:38Yeah, it was on 1.3.
04:39I tried to find the original audio.
04:41It just wasn't on out there.
04:43Okay.
04:43Isn't that what I've said for the last few months about Brandon Ayuk?
04:47Look, yes, you could do a deal with him.
04:51But you better damn sure protect yourself.
04:55Because if you ask anybody that played ball, knowing how tough it is to make the level of money he
05:01had,
05:02and for him to just not give a damn about it, that's something wrong.
05:06Like you say, that's crazy.
05:08I felt the exact same way as soon as I heard it.
05:11Football players are motivated by a lot, right?
05:13Yeah.
05:14You always said the name on the front of the jersey and the name on the back of the jersey.
05:17Totally.
05:17Like you're playing for pride.
05:20You're playing for an intense sense of competition.
05:23But you're also playing for significant sums of money.
05:27And one thing, you can think football players are smart.
05:30You can think football players are dumb.
05:32You walk around a locker room, everybody in that locker room knows exactly how much money everybody else is making.
05:39And what you're making.
05:40Right.
05:40Like that is not a secret.
05:43I read this thing about Gronk once.
05:46And Gronk plays up this dumb guy.
05:49I think he knows it sells tickets for him.
05:53One of the Patriots players, maybe it was Will Fork.
05:55I can't remember where I read it from.
05:56But he said, he's like, man, y'all think Gronk is dumb?
05:59Gronk's the smartest dude in that locker room.
06:01That dude can add up your contract faster than your agent can.
06:05And players know where the money is.
06:09Oh, yeah.
06:09Period.
06:10So, Brian, my question to you,
06:13if you were a player on this commander's team
06:17and there's a team meeting,
06:21maybe AP just pulls in the captains,
06:23maybe he doesn't do anything.
06:25What's it like the first day BA rolls into the locker room?
06:29I think players understand talent first.
06:33And then the deal he would have,
06:36like what he would have to be dealing with,
06:39players don't worry about that
06:40because that would be structured right for the team.
06:44Sure.
06:44And if the team has it structured properly,
06:47all the players are trying to do is get him to be what he can be.
06:52Now, if it's a veteran guy,
06:54like if I were on the team and he came there,
06:56I want to sit down and have a conversation with him.
06:58And it ain't no, hey, man, let me talk to you.
07:00No, no, no.
07:01No, what's up, bro?
07:02What's happening?
07:03Find out what makes him tick.
07:04You good.
07:05Because for me,
07:07I played with a lot of crazy people, okay?
07:10I played with a lot of people that were off a little bit.
07:14I am trying to make sure you're not going to go postal
07:18in the locker room,
07:20but I damn sure want to make sure you show your best
07:22on the football field.
07:23You know what I'm saying?
07:25Yep.
07:25So you kind of come in as one of the guys that lead the team
07:28and you want to make sure they understand
07:31bro,
07:31we need you to get where we want to go.
07:33And that,
07:34that for anybody,
07:35even in regular life,
07:37make a person feel they are needed
07:39or they are a major part of something.
07:41They normally give you everything they have.
07:43I would be trying to do that with them.
07:45But the team,
07:47just what Hoosman's out of said,
07:49has to protect themselves.
07:51I was texting with somebody leaving Indy
07:54about certain players headed to free agency
07:57and the money they get.
07:59And there was one player in particular,
08:02Joey,
08:02don't show my phone here,
08:03but I was asking about one player
08:06and basically the consensus was
08:10that guy is such a bad guy.
08:13You can't deal with him.
08:14And I said,
08:15yeah,
08:15but every locker room's got to have some.
08:17And the reply was,
08:19yeah,
08:19you got to have a few bleep bags,
08:21but this guy is next level.
08:23This was not about Brandon.
08:25you to be clear.
08:25Yeah.
08:26There is space in NFL locker rooms,
08:29in sports locker rooms,
08:31hell,
08:32probably in law offices
08:33and architect offices.
08:35Somebody's always off.
08:36If you're really good at what you do,
08:38people make exceptions
08:39for what you don't do well.
08:41That's reality,
08:42right?
08:43If you work in sales
08:45and your top sales guy
08:46is a bit of a weirdo,
08:48but he's moving the unit every month,
08:50you're going to look past
08:52the stuffed animal collection
08:53or whatever it may be.
08:55You know what I mean?
08:55Like people always assume
08:57that sports is so different than life.
08:59Let's just do this,
09:00Jay.
09:01There was a guy
09:02that wore number 56 in New York.
09:05Everybody knew the things
09:06he dealt with
09:07and what he was doing.
09:09Did they deal with this stuff?
09:12As long as you ball,
09:14people will find a way
09:15to deal with it,
09:15but you better keep balling.
09:20Specific to Brandon Iyuk,
09:23he has this relationship
09:24with Jaden Daniels.
09:25We've all heard about it.
09:26We've seen the videos,
09:27right?
09:27Yeah.
09:29Do you think
09:31that relationship
09:32is enough
09:32to keep him
09:33in the right frame
09:35of mind?
09:37Or do you think
09:38that's possibly
09:38asking too much
09:40of Jaden
09:40to have to try
09:41to keep a player
09:42in the right frame?
09:43I discussed that
09:44when we talked about this
09:45a few weeks ago.
09:46I don't want Jaden
09:47to have to be
09:47the person concerned for him.
09:49I just hope
09:50that his,
09:52like always,
09:53I tell kids
09:54a lot of times,
09:56find someone
09:57that you don't want
09:58to disappoint
09:59and do things
10:00for them.
10:01Because we'll disappoint
10:02ourselves in a heartbeat.
10:03We don't care
10:04half the time.
10:05Everybody does that.
10:06But the mama,
10:07your uncle,
10:08your brother,
10:08your cousin,
10:09your dad,
10:09whoever,
10:11maybe Jaden
10:12is the guy
10:13that I don't
10:15want to disappoint.
10:16And maybe that
10:17gets him on
10:18the straight and narrow.
10:19But I don't ever
10:20want Jaden to feel
10:21that you have
10:22to go out there
10:23and try to
10:25raise a man.
10:28That's your job
10:28for yourself.
10:29That's his job
10:30for himself.
10:31But if you are
10:32somebody that kind
10:33of keeps him
10:34on the straight and narrow,
10:35hey, cool.
10:36Have you around
10:37that person.
10:39For me with Ayuk,
10:40it's all about
10:42structuring the contract.
10:43I think the guarantee
10:44can't be but
10:45seven,
10:45eight million dollars
10:46with a whole bunch
10:47of incentives.
10:48I think the highest
10:49you can go is ten.
10:51I also,
10:52I don't know
10:52if you agree
10:53with this,
10:53but like,
10:54if I'm Adam Peters
10:56and I've heard now
10:58for two years
11:00that Brandon
11:01wants to be
11:02in Washington,
11:04I'm not really
11:06competing
11:06with the marketplace.
11:08No.
11:09Like,
11:09if you want
11:10to be here,
11:11you walked away
11:12from that,
11:12show me.
11:13Right.
11:14This is what we
11:15can pay you.
11:17Don't come back
11:18and say,
11:19nah,
11:19I need about
11:20five,
11:20ten more than that.
11:21No,
11:21no,
11:21no,
11:22we're not doing that.
11:22You want to shop it?
11:23You want to go
11:24to the Packers?
11:25You want to go
11:25to the Texans?
11:27You want to go
11:27to the Cardinals?
11:29See,
11:30it's a,
11:31yo,
11:32here's our piece
11:33of paper.
11:34You can sign
11:35this or we're
11:36done.
11:37And I think
11:38you kind of
11:38have to set
11:39those expectations
11:39right off the
11:40top.
11:41The only other
11:42thing that I'm
11:43curious about
11:44with Brandon
11:44IU,
11:45because there's
11:45a lot that
11:47we'll probably
11:47never know.
11:48And I know
11:48there's like
11:49this subset
11:49of people that
11:50believe the
11:51Niners did
11:51something bad
11:52and that news
11:53will come out.
11:54Frankly,
11:54I think if
11:55there was news
11:56the BA camp
11:56wanted to get
11:57out,
11:57it would be
11:58out.
11:58There's a lot
11:58like the NFL
12:00sued the NFL
12:01PA that they
12:02couldn't release
12:02their report
12:03cards.
12:03And what
12:03happened two
12:04days later?
12:04The report
12:05cards got
12:05released.
12:06We live in a
12:07world where
12:08stuff gets
12:09out,
12:10man.
12:11So perhaps
12:12that will
12:13emerge someday,
12:14but if they
12:15wanted their
12:16side of the
12:16story,
12:16it's not like
12:16they don't
12:17have means
12:17to present
12:18it.
12:18Totally.
12:20The only
12:20thing I would
12:21like a
12:22definitive answer
12:23upon,
12:23and we have
12:24three young
12:24men there
12:25in the
12:26aquarium.
12:26I think
12:27they're all
12:28in their
12:2820s,
12:28I believe.
12:29They're adept
12:30at the
12:31internet,
12:31I would hope
12:32and assume.
12:34I can't
12:35get a
12:36straight
12:36answer on
12:38if the
12:38Brandon
12:39Iuke video
12:40of him
12:40holding the
12:41ice cream
12:41cone and
12:42letting it
12:43melt onto
12:43his hand
12:44is real
12:45or fake.
12:46boys,
12:47have you seen
12:48this video?
12:49No.
12:49All right,
12:50first,
12:50let's see if
12:51I can find
12:52it for
12:52B-Mitch.
12:52So obviously
12:53Brandon
12:54Iuke had
12:55the real
12:56and disturbing
12:58video of
12:59him
13:00speeding
13:01by the
13:04facility,
13:05right?
13:06now apparently
13:09there is
13:11another video
13:13of Brandon
13:13Iuke
13:14supposedly
13:15going on
13:16Instagram
13:17live and
13:18holding an
13:18ice cream
13:19cone and
13:20just letting
13:20it melt
13:21into his
13:21hand.
13:22And like,
13:23it's bizarre.
13:24Now there
13:24are some
13:25people that
13:25question the
13:26authenticity
13:27of this
13:27video,
13:28calling it
13:28like fake
13:29AI content.
13:32B,
13:34I'm going
13:35with the
13:35mindset that
13:36it's fake
13:39because if
13:39not,
13:40that's super
13:40weird.
13:41Like,
13:41I'm with you
13:43on that one.
13:44Like,
13:44I have two
13:45young daughters.
13:45They love
13:46ice cream cones.
13:47We get them.
13:48If you're just
13:48letting it melt
13:49and you're not
13:49trying to get
13:50it over there,
13:51something's wrong.
13:51Like,
13:51the ice cream
13:52melts all over
13:53them all the
13:53time.
13:54They're trying
13:54to eat it.
13:55They just
13:55can't keep
13:56up with the
13:57pace.
13:57Let's just
13:57say we,
13:58let's hope
13:59it's fake.
14:00Because if
14:00it is real,
14:01that's just
14:02another one
14:03you got to
14:03figure out
14:03the why.
14:05Like,
14:06why he didn't
14:06try to get
14:06the money.
14:07Why the hell
14:08are you just
14:08letting ice cream
14:08melt?
14:09You know,
14:10so the more
14:11whys that pop
14:12up,
14:13you begin to
14:14do one little
14:14Michael Jackson
14:15moonwalk away.
14:17Boys,
14:17what does your
14:18research suggest
14:19on the ice cream
14:20cone?
14:21I mean,
14:21I'm looking
14:22at it now.
14:22I think it's
14:23real.
14:24I think he
14:25just was
14:26eating an ice
14:27cream cone and
14:28it was melted
14:28all over him
14:29and it was
14:29kind of messy.
14:30But again,
14:31I feel as if
14:32that's kind of
14:32like the humor
14:33nowadays.
14:34And not to
14:35say that like
14:36you guys have
14:36lost your
14:36fastball and
14:37humor or
14:37anything,
14:38but that's
14:38just kind of
14:39the age of
14:39social media
14:40now.
14:41Do you have
14:42the video of
14:42it melting?
14:43Because all I
14:43have is a
14:44still.
14:44I'm asking you
14:45a question here,
14:46Ryan,
14:46since you
14:46talking about
14:47the fastball.
14:50you think
14:51just sitting
14:52there with
14:53ice cream
14:53cone letting
14:54it melt
14:54is humor?
14:56No,
14:56I don't,
14:57but in the
14:57day of
14:58like everyone
14:59streams
15:00everything now.
15:01Yeah,
15:01but still,
15:03everyone streams
15:04everything,
15:04but don't you
15:06every once in a
15:06while say,
15:07why the hell
15:07are they
15:08streaming this?
15:09It makes you
15:10think something's
15:10wrong with them,
15:11huh?
15:14I'm confused.
15:15I'm confused by it.
15:16It's not funny to me.
15:17I heard a story
15:17this morning.
15:18This young lady
15:18broke into some
15:19people's house,
15:19threw Fruity Pebbles
15:20all over the floor.
15:21She had no pants on
15:22and she was just
15:24sitting there
15:24eating the Fruity
15:25Pebbles on the floor
15:26while petting a
15:27family dog.
15:27Guess what?
15:28People do stupid
15:29stuff.
15:30That's not funny to me.
15:32That woman needs
15:33help.
15:33I agree.
15:34Some of these people
15:35that are streaming
15:35English stuff need
15:37help.
15:38White Brian,
15:38he only speaks when
15:39he's got something to
15:40say.
15:40What do you say,
15:41the ice cream is
15:41melting way too
15:42fast for it not
15:42to be an AI effect?
15:44I agree.
15:45Let me see it.
15:46Send it to the
15:47chat so B can see it.
15:48We're going to
15:49continue to examine
15:50the melting ice cream
15:51cone.
15:51I vote fake.
15:52Stallion votes real
15:53because that's humor
15:54nowadays, which is
15:55a really damning.
15:57Maybe Stallion's brain
15:58is just fried.
