Escape to Florida - Season 1 Episode 20
Transcript
00:00Welcome to Florida.
00:02We're having a party.
00:04Home to theme parks, golden tans, and 400,000 Brits.
00:08This one is the one with the view.
00:10Wow.
00:11Who've made the Sunshine State their new home.
00:14I feel blessed every single day.
00:16I'm living the American dream.
00:18I definitely am.
00:19They've swapped drizzly winters and gas bills for new careers
00:22and seemingly endless fun in the sun.
00:25Two, one.
00:28Get it right, and life in Florida can be like a dream come true.
00:32I get to drive a convertible.
00:34It's fabulous.
00:35But getting here and staying here takes hard work.
00:38Good job, good job.
00:39Keep it going, team.
00:41Grit and determination.
00:44The glamorous side of living in Florida.
00:46These are the Brits who've made their own Escape to Florida.
00:55Today on Escape to Florida.
00:57Let's get it out of the box.
00:58Joanne from Hull finds herself in a tight spot as she fixes up a property to sell.
01:04So I think that is going to have to come over.
01:09Liverpool-born Lee struggles to keep his wife's birthday party a surprise.
01:13It's my wife's birthday.
01:14I'm going to give her a little surprise birthday for her.
01:16Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
01:18And Andreas from Southampton has to weave some magic to impress his teenage daughter.
01:24They basically call me Andreas Harry Potter Bird.
01:32Tampa, on the Gulf Coast, is a Florida property hotspot and home for the last 21 years to mum
01:39of two, estate agent Joanne from Hull, who also does up houses to sell on.
01:45Everything should be fine.
01:46If it's not today, it'll be tomorrow.
01:48My parents started a real estate and mortgage business when I was 16 and I started out as
01:53their assistant, working with them.
01:55I actually bought my first car and my first house, flipping houses with my dad.
01:59Are they doing their signing today?
02:02Erm, I think so.
02:05OK.
02:05It is definitely kind of ironic that the tables have turned.
02:09Erm, my very first job was as my mum's assistant and now she's my assistant.
02:15Joanne's son, 18-year-old Angelo, is also hoping to join the family business.
02:20Thanks, Mum.
02:22What are you going to do for lunch?
02:23I got some sandwiches yesterday.
02:26Angelo's graduating from high school this month.
02:29He wants to go to college and get a business degree and then eventually come and work with
02:34me full-time.
02:35Once you've finished your breakfast, we are going to head to the office real quick.
02:38I've got a lot of box, I have to drop off to grandma and get some keys from Jane.
02:42So you get to see grandma today.
02:43OK.
02:45Also known as Joanne's assistant at work, her mum, Jeannie.
02:49Hello.
02:50Nice of you to show up.
02:52Mmm.
02:53Nice to see you, sweetheart.
02:55My mum is the best assistant ever.
02:57I do give her grief a lot with the banter.
03:00I try and keep it professional, but every once in a while it slips.
03:05What am I looking in?
03:06Dash or in...?
03:07No, that's fine.
03:08OK.
03:08Could you go any slower?
03:10LAUGHTER
03:12We actually get on really well.
03:15She'll sometimes go, oh, mother!
03:17And I go, all right, love you, bye.
03:22Bye.
03:22Bye, sweetheart.
03:23See you soon.
03:23Have a good one.
03:24Love you.
03:25All right.
03:26Get some work done.
03:27Oh, slacker.
03:28All right, let's go.
03:29Luckily, Joanne's next stop is just down the hall to see office manager, fellow Brit and best pal,
03:36Jane.
03:37I need to pick up the keys for 20.
03:40Jane has been my best friend now for about the past six years.
03:43We take every single vacation together.
03:44We're together every weekend.
03:47There's really not much that we don't do together.
03:51Yeah.
03:52Awesome.
03:53I need to shred this.
03:55Joanne's main job today is working at her most recent purchase,
03:59a two-bed condo she bought six months ago to do up and sell on as quickly as possible.
04:05Something else she does with her pals.
04:07Jane's husband, Billy, is my partner for the flip.
04:11So he's the one that we'll be meeting down at the condo.
04:14I think this is our fourth or fifth one that we've done together.
04:18It's tired.
04:19I'm just warning you.
04:20It's tired.
04:21OK.
04:22Be nice, be gentle.
04:24I will try.
04:25With the office stuff sorted, Joanne and Angelo can now try to tick off some jobs at the condo
04:31so she can get it on the market and hopefully get it sold fast.
04:36Bye.
04:45The Gulf Coast of Florida has a vibrant British community attracted by its semi-tropical climate,
04:51like pub owner Liverpool-born Lee, who moved to the Sunshine State in 2003.
04:58You know how to load this as well and make it go noisy, don't you?
05:02My ex-wife's mum lived here so we come over to visit and we just fell in love with the
05:06place.
05:07It's fabulous.
05:08I mean, what a place to live.
05:0990% of the time it's sunny.
05:10I just love it here.
05:13Seems to be a few people in tonight.
05:16Five years later, Lee left his IT career to buy this British bar and restaurant,
05:20the horse and jockey.
05:22Making sure the place is clean, the guys behind the bar getting that.
05:24You get that rush when everybody turns up at once.
05:27We're the official Liverpool supporters club for Pinellas.
05:30The staff are great, the customers are great.
05:33You know, we've decorated it in such a way that it looks a little like a pub back home.
05:37We are regulars at the pub.
05:39It's a neighbourhood pub where everybody knows everyone.
05:42I feel like I'm back in, you know, in God's country in the UK.
05:53Every Monday morning, Lee has to take stock and work out what's needed for the coming week.
05:59Hi, son.
06:00Hi, Dad.
06:00What are you up to?
06:02Putting chairs down, finishing mopping.
06:04Lee's eldest son, Connor, also works at the pub.
06:07Born in the UK, Connor moved here when he was just one and now has a Florida-born brother and
06:12sister.
06:13Connor, he's 23 years old. Then we've got Edie, who also works at the pub.
06:18She's a servant. And then we have Shea, who doesn't work at the pub yet, but he will do soon.
06:25Connor's setting the restaurant up at the moment, kind of get an hour before any of the customers turn up.
06:29And yeah, it's like clean the floor, clean the tables again, reset the bar.
06:34Connor doesn't run the pub at the moment. I'd like for him to get there in the next two or
06:38three years.
06:40Although the bar side does well, it's the restaurant that counts for 65% of the business.
06:46So Lee has to make sure the British food is top-notch to keep the customers coming,
06:51to support himself, his new wife, Taryn, and his kids.
06:55The menu at the pub is just classic British dishes. You know, we have fish and chips, cottage pie.
07:01We've got sausage rolls on there. I think the difference between an American bar and an English bar.
07:05I'm sure they get things out of a box and throw them in the fryer. We make everything fresh.
07:11I'm just doing the list for the wholesalers, pizza boxes.
07:14We need mustard, chicken base, limes, pork. The recipes are mine and chefs that have hired over the years.
07:20We kind of picked each other's brains. We're always trying to improve.
07:24Do you need anything other than limes and oranges? No, all good.
07:26See you later, son. Bye, Ned.
07:29With eldest son Connor prepping at the pub, Lee's youngest son, Shay, is helping at the wholesalers.
07:35Shay is going to be waiting for me there. Edie's going to drop him off.
07:38He normally helps me and he kind of knows where everything is. We've been there so many times.
07:44Tampa is usually one of the sunniest spots in the Sunshine State, but today the weather has taken a turn.
07:52I always describe it as like man's rain. It's like proper rain. You know, in the UK you get, it's
07:58like perpetual drizzle.
07:59We have that downpour and then the sun comes out, which is great. I'd rather they get it over with.
08:05All right, son. You all right?
08:07Yeah.
08:09I can get restaurant supplies delivered by loads of different companies, but I like to go there and put your
08:13hands on the fruit and veg, make sure it's fresh.
08:16The Americans love ranch and blue cheese on the wings.
08:19After a busy weekend at the pub, there's a lot to restock, including ingredients for wife Taryn's most loved meal.
08:27Taryn's favourite is probably, we have the Thai curry and we need the coconut milk for that.
08:32It's actually getting a lot harder to find English stuff. Black pudding, we have to get that imported.
08:37And you know, certain things you used to be able to get, you just can't get any more.
08:40All right, we've got lemonade, both cheeses, beets, mushrooms, silverware, oranges, skirt steak.
08:44It's mustard. I'm going to grab some yellow mustard. It's in that yellow metal tub, right?
08:49Yeah, yeah. Family's really important to me. Shea still can't drive, but once you've got a car,
08:54you lose them. So I think it's just, you know, it's so important to spend that little bit of time
08:57that you have. It's like a massive game of Jenga. In reverse.
09:04Shopping for the pub over, Lee and Shea have to load up the car and hurry for Lee's next job,
09:09organising a surprise party for wife Taryn, tonight.
09:14Yep.
09:31Daytona Beach on central Florida's Atlantic coast is one of the state's most popular
09:37and a paradise for play, both in and out of the water.
09:42Oh, yeah.
09:44Former squaddie turned fitness instructor, Andreas from Southampton,
09:48is taking full advantage of its benefits.
09:51They're just dumbbells, but like, we've got enough kettlebells, I think.
09:54I have been in Florida for just over four years. I moved here because I met a girl.
09:59Unfortunately, it was a fail.
10:02But by then, Andreas had firmly fallen for the sunshine state.
10:06It's like a workout before a workout.
10:09The outdoor lifestyle is incredible over here. And for me, it's just a better place to own a business,
10:15particularly my business, in the outdoor fitness world.
10:20Dumbbells, OK. I need to set up some cones as well.
10:24Andreas has swapped his army physical training instructor post for a civilian career as a health and fitness coach.
10:31How's it going, guys?
10:32It's going.
10:33You ready for this?
10:34Yes.
10:34Good. It's going to be fun.
10:37Today, we have boot camp on the beach. This one is just for about 20 to 30 people today.
10:41My daughter's doing this one as well, which is amazing.
10:4313-year-old Jen splits her time between her dad in the US and her mum in the UK.
10:49Jen is very smart, funny, really, really funny. She has me belly laughing a lot.
10:54Jen!
10:55It's really difficult to spend time away from my daughter. I do struggle a lot, but I try to be
11:00as
11:00present with her as I possibly can. Nine months ago, Jen started at a private online school, which
11:06means she spends two months at a time in Florida with her dad, then two months in the UK with
11:11her mum.
11:12My school is very interesting, and I enjoy it because I get to experience, like, the best of both worlds.
11:19And, you know, when I get, like, bored of the cold weather, I just come back here. So, it's great.
11:25Ready? Three, two, one, off you go! Well done, guys. Awesome.
11:32It's the summer holidays, and Jen only has a couple of weeks before she heads back to Britain.
11:37To make the most of their precious time together, he's brought her to work.
11:42You should have listened.
11:43I need to be more engaging.
11:44Oh, my God.
11:46I don't want to leave my dad. I don't want to leave the nice weather and the beaches.
11:50We both love working out and stuff, and we love doing sports.
11:54It's atop the plank position, guys.
11:57Sharing boot camp to Jen is, like, the best part about it as well.
11:59Like, she's my baby girl, and, like, to give her these experiences of being out here and being in the
12:04beach.
12:05Yay!
12:09The team had a great time. Everyone got a good workout in.
12:12Well done, guys. Good job. Well done, guys.
12:17Boot camp was great. I really enjoyed it.
12:19It's nice doing what we do together because I'm the only kid there,
12:22and I guess it would just feel special being there.
12:25The other boot campers seem to have enjoyed it, too,
12:28especially with the addition of a post-workout barbecue.
12:32We all encourage each other, and Coach Andreas makes it a lot of fun.
12:37So we should take him to Pilates next.
12:40Oh, I would die of Pilates.
12:41Yeah, let's do it.
12:43It's great to see him encourage her. She, you know, she's a young teenager.
12:47And we all just kind of seem to get along.
12:51Running your own business as a single parent does have its challenges.
12:55It's difficult when sometimes you're trying to work, especially as an entrepreneur.
12:59There's definitely a lot of power and guilt when you can't always give her all the time.
13:02So, with limited time left before Jen returns to the UK,
13:06Andreas' next task is planning a special treat to show her more of Florida's fun side.
13:14We're going to go to Universal, which we're really excited about.
13:16We're looking forward to spending some time away,
13:18get away from work, and have a great time down there.
13:30On the other coast of Florida, you'll find Clearwater,
13:33where Joanne from Hull and her son Angelo have arrived at the two-bed condo.
13:38She's flipping in the hope of making a decent profit.
13:43All right, let's do this.
13:4618-year-old Angelo is hoping to follow in his mum's footsteps.
13:50I'm looking to learn a lot from my mum about what she does
13:53and just how she rebuilds things, makes it all look better.
13:56Because, you know, I could be doing this someday in the future.
13:58I'm just going to go and get changed real quick.
14:01And then I think I want to get those LEDs replaced out.
14:04OK.
14:05Angelo is definitely my little entrepreneur.
14:08So, for him, I think, you know, seeing how successful I've been
14:11and everything that I'm doing, I think that kind of sparked his interest
14:14in wanting to come and work with me.
14:17Joanne bought the condo six months ago for $240,000.
14:21This will be her fifth doer-upper, and once the renovation's finished,
14:25she's hoping to put it on the market for over 300 grand.
14:28I want to show you what it looked like, so you can really appreciate and see
14:33how much work that we've done on it so far.
14:37Oh, it was a really old house.
14:38Right? Look at the kitchen.
14:41No, the bathroom was the worst.
14:45Yeah, that is insane.
14:46Isn't that crazy?
14:47I want to kind of teach Angelo some of the roles, some of the things that we do.
14:51So I'm going to be putting up some light fixtures.
14:54All right, let's get these lights figured out.
14:57Um, I needed to go ahead and cut the power for me,
14:59because we don't want to get electrocuted today.
15:02Obviously, the more we do ourselves, the more profit we're going to make.
15:07The renovation didn't get off to the smoothest start,
15:10with storm damage and contractor issues delaying her schedule.
15:14I'm desperate to get it finished and get it listed,
15:17so I can get this one off my books.
15:19All right, grab one of the LEDs for me.
15:22All right, hopefully I've got the right one.
15:25Do you have wire strippers?
15:26Let me have a look in the toolbox.
15:29Sorry, Mum, I got it.
15:31Working upstairs is fellow Brit Billy,
15:34who's come to help Joanna out with the renovation.
15:40So I managed to get the, um, shiverhead changed to the...
15:44Oh, OK. ..the rain one.
15:45The first flip that Billy and I did was for my mum's condo,
15:49and we just did everything ourselves.
15:51It was really good to get us started,
15:53get our feet wet, learn from our mistakes.
15:56Well, that looks good, Billy. Yeah, great.
15:58I like it. Thank you.
16:00I'm actually not a handyman. I'm an emergency room nurse.
16:04I have absolutely no training in, uh, being a handyman,
16:08but it's something I really enjoy doing.
16:11But downstairs, Angelo has hit a snag.
16:14Mum, you got the wrong fittings for this light.
16:16It's not going to screw in, right?
16:19Yeah. Why? What's wrong?
16:21OK.
16:22Oh, shoot. It's clipping, not screwing, right?
16:26It's a clip. Yeah, I have no clue how it is.
16:28Uh-oh.
16:29So these are the old fixtures with the clips.
16:32I'm either going to have to find some of the clips
16:35that are going to be able to fit and slot in,
16:37or I'm going to have to change the LEDs and try and find them
16:41with the clips fitted. So I don't know.
16:42Yeah, I have to have a look and see what I can figure out.
16:46Even minor issues can add to her costs.
16:49And six months into what should have been a quick renovation,
16:52Joanne needs the rest of the build to go to plan,
16:55or the profit she's hoping to make could start slipping away.
17:07In the Sunshine State's waterfront community of South Pasadena,
17:12pub owner Lee from Liverpool is back home with Taryn,
17:15his wife of four years.
17:17What are you going to do with Shea tonight? Is he going to be in the pub?
17:20Yeah, he'll have to be, won't he?
17:21Taryn also works in the drinks trade,
17:24selling wine for Jon Bon Jovi's Rosé brand.
17:27And today, it's a very special day for her.
17:30It's Taryn's birthday.
17:32My favourite thing about Taryn is she is, without doubt,
17:35the easiest-going person I think I've ever met.
17:38Nothing phases her, which is a good job, to be honest.
17:43Lee and Taryn begin the celebrations early,
17:45with some festivities and gifts over the weekend.
17:48But he saved the last one for today.
17:51Happy birthday.
17:52Oh, it's so pretty.
17:55You're welcome.
17:57It's beautiful. It's a beautiful carry.
18:00Taryn thinks she's having a low-key evening tonight.
18:04My sister and a friend are taking me to a nice place on the beach,
18:08just for a drink. Lee's not invited.
18:10I don't mind. That means I don't have to pay.
18:14All right, I'm going to the gym. I know you're going to work.
18:17All right. See you later.
18:18Happy birthday. Love you.
18:19See you later.
18:20Thank you. Have a good day.
18:22What Taryn doesn't realise is bigger plans are afoot at Lee's British pub,
18:27the Horse and Jockey.
18:29Tonight, we're doing a surprise birthday celebration for Taryn.
18:32It starts at 6pm, so I've invited everybody she knows,
18:37and hopefully it'll be a success.
18:41Lee's juggling running the pub and organising the party,
18:44so eldest son Connor is helping out, as well as planning his own special treat.
18:49What are you going to do for Taryn tonight?
18:51I'm going to make Taryn a favourite Cosmo.
18:54Two ounces vodka, one ounce orange liqueur,
19:00three quarters of an ounce of lemon, and then a half ounce of simple syrup,
19:05which is just equal parts sugar to water, three quarters of an ounce of cranberry juice,
19:10and then you're done.
19:12Connor is widely regarded in the pub as the best mixologist.
19:17It actually gets reflected in the sales. A beer is like seven dollars,
19:21and then you're selling cocktails for 13, 14, 15 dollars.
19:25Tonight, Taryn's signature cocktail will be on the menu,
19:28so Connor will be busy putting his mixology skills to good use.
19:33It tastes good. I think Taryn will love that, actually.
19:35It's nice and citrusy, and she likes that.
19:39She always has, like, a lime juice in whatever it is she's drinking.
19:44Back at Lee's house, daughter Edie is making her own surprise for stepmom Taryn,
19:49a classic British birthday cake, despite her being American.
19:54Oh, wait. I need to preheat the oven.
19:57I'm making a Victoria's sponge cake.
19:59It's a British one. I had to do the, like, conversions to cups and everything.
20:04Taryn is lovely. I love Taryn.
20:07She's really, like, made a change in my dad's life, you can tell.
20:12Edie's hoping her Victoria sponge will be the icing on the cake of Taryn's birthday surprises,
20:17but it's not quite going to plan.
20:19This already isn't looking that promising.
20:23I'm going to mix it again. It's kind of lumpy.
20:28When my dad found out that I was, like, going away for college,
20:31the first thing he got me was a bunch of stuff for cooking and baking.
20:36This is looking more promising as the minute goes on.
20:40The perfect chance to channel her British roots with a good old cuppa.
20:45I love tea.
20:48I know in England they drink tea all the time. That's not really a thing here.
20:53When I was younger, I used to say water and not water,
20:57and everyone was like, what the hell are you saying?
20:59As Edie has the cake under control,
21:02Lee has an hour and a half to finish the rest of the prep before the party starts.
21:07I'm going to have to go now and get some balloons for this birthday extravaganza.
21:13The people who are in town have called and hopefully they'll show up.
21:18Taryn, she's great. It'll mean a hell of a lot to her.
21:22Along with the balloons, Lee's asked local florist,
21:25pub regular and friend Lucy to make up a special bouquet.
21:30They are wonderful. I love them. Thank you so much.
21:35I knew she'd love something clean and classic. I hope she loves it.
21:39Yeah, I'm sure she will.
21:43While Lee's been sorting gifts, son Connor's been making sure the pub is ready for the party.
21:49Just cleaning all the tables, getting ready for Taryn's birthday. And then, uh, yeah,
21:53getting ready, get her cocktails ready and she'll be good to go.
21:57Taryn is the best step-mom. She's great to my dad, great to Edie and Shay,
22:01super friendly, super nice. Expecting 30 to 40 people tonight for Taryn's birthday.
22:07So we've got 20 minutes, 30 minutes to get all ready.
22:10Connor, Edie, Shay and Lee have all gone to a lot of effort to make tonight's special for Taryn,
22:16and with guests now arriving, all they need is for the lady herself to arrive and to like the surprise.
22:37On the other side of the Sunshine State in New Smyrna Beach,
22:41fitness coach Andreas from Southampton is getting ready to take daughter Jen
22:45on a special trip before she heads back to the UK next week.
22:51You've got magnesium to make sure that I can sleep really well.
22:54You're like, you're the queen of ice masks. But where's yours?
22:57Wow. Yours is way, way prettier than mine.
23:01I know, you should get one like that.
23:02Exactly.
23:03As it's Jen's summer holidays. Oh, look, look good.
23:07Andreas is putting building his business on hold to enjoy some family time at one of the most
23:12visited theme parks in the world. I feel like you packed really well today, Jen. Well done.
23:16Thank you. Very organised.
23:18As a former squaddie, even the packing involves military precision.
23:22Always got to be practical. I'm ex-military. You need to make sure you pack your stuff properly.
23:26You should get better style. You should like maybe add a bit more a few like nicer clothes.
23:31You just like basically the same things. You just wear a t-shirt and shorts like.
23:35I live in Florida.
23:36White, beige.
23:37What, do you want me to wear a suit?
23:38Black.
23:38Do you want me to wear a tuxedo?
23:41There's one other important woman in Andreas' life who's joining him on the trip.
23:47Hello.
23:48Hey, how's it going?
23:49Good. How are you?
23:50Good to see you.
23:50Andreas' mum, Helen.
23:52Oh, are you all packed?
23:53Yes.
23:54Let's go.
23:55Put some quiche.
23:57Helen moved to the States ten years ago and lives just over half an hour away.
24:02Mum was living in Arizona for about eight years and as soon as I moved to Florida,
24:06she came out to be by my side and it makes Florida feel more like home.
24:12Want a tea?
24:13Yeah, why not?
24:15You never stop worrying about your kids, ever.
24:17Every time I come up, I bring food.
24:20I even clean the house.
24:25Jen, you good?
24:27Yeah.
24:27Ready for your universal?
24:28I am.
24:30Despite the British-looking weather,
24:34they're off for a last-minute family treat before Jen has to go back to the UK.
24:40Did you bring any sun cream on?
24:41I did.
24:42Check that off.
24:43And when they do get to Orlando, thankfully the sun is shining.
24:50Let's take some photos.
24:52Get closer.
24:55I feel like I've actually gained a stronger relationship with my parents when I'm not with them.
25:02We can make the most of time with each other when we have it.
25:07Jennifer is just amazing.
25:09I love her so much and I just love to hug her.
25:14I'm pumped for this.
25:16Are you excited?
25:16What are you going to see?
25:17Are you going to see it at the front or the back?
25:19I struggled for the first year after leaving the army,
25:22but I just started focusing on what was important,
25:25which was building a better life for me and my kid.
25:35As avid Harry Potter fans, they're heading first to familiar territory.
25:41This is Hagrid's motorbike.
25:43Isn't Hagrid your favourite character?
25:44He is.
25:45Even Mum Helen's braving this one.
25:48I think Mum's going to scream the loudest.
25:52It should be really fun.
25:54Yeah, it's going to be a lot of fun, right?
25:55I think it'll be a good one to start on.
25:59The motorbikes will begin moving immediately.
26:02Clear the way.
26:04No turning back now, Helen.
26:16Oh, my God, that's so fun.
26:19Oh, man, that was so much fun.
26:23I know, that was really fun.
26:24Yeah.
26:25I don't think I was all scared.
26:27It was fast and it was crazy and we got dropped down.
26:31My Nana's a sweet person and we love going out together.
26:34And I think we have a good laugh.
26:36Go and look at photos, shall we?
26:38Nice.
26:39Hey.
26:40Oh, Mum!
26:43Oh, my God.
26:44Oh, you look like you're hanging on for dear life.
26:50Next up, it's a reminder of home.
26:53Well, Harry Potter's home as they head to Diagon Alley,
26:56the famous cobbled shopping street.
26:58This is amazing.
27:00Hooray!
27:06OK, so we're going to be watching ones.
27:08Whoever casts the most spells is the winner.
27:10Me and Jen are going to win this.
27:11I miss Jennifer every day when she's not here.
27:15We just completely love having her around.
27:18Who knows we're going to beat him anyway?
27:19No chance.
27:20Yeah, he won a bet.
27:21No chance.
27:22What, a bet on?
27:22Yeah.
27:23We boys in this night.
27:24All right, we can do this.
27:25I beat my dad in Uno a lot, like for almost every time,
27:28because I'm just better.
27:30He says it's like, oh, it's luck, and I'm like, no, it's skill.
27:33It seems like the whole family love a competition,
27:36but these aren't just any old wands.
27:39The handle will vibrate, and the tip will light up when you do your magic correctly.
27:42OK.
27:42I think I like this one.
27:43You like that wand?
27:44I like the colour of it as well.
27:45A really good wand.
27:47Yeah.
27:48To cast a spell, they need to use their wands at one of 30 special locations around the park.
27:55They basically call me Andreas Harry Potter Burn.
27:58I think I've watched the Harry Potter movies more times than anybody else here,
28:03so like, I think I have a pretty good chance of winning.
28:07Well, they wanted me to win the most, that's why they gave me the map.
28:10Oh, I have one.
28:11Oh, you do have a map, Dan.
28:14So, with maps at the ready, it's time to find out who's paying for dinner.
28:18I'm ready to beat you guys.
28:27100 miles away in the coastal city of Clearwater, Joanne from Hull, Son Angelo,
28:33and handyman Billy are at her condo, trying to tick some jobs off the list so she can get it
28:39on the
28:39market and hopefully make a profit.
28:43Actual trim for the shower is gone, so we have to find out what kind of trim it is.
28:47Yeah, let's see. Let's take a look. Let me see what we've got.
28:53With Billy on hand to help, and the light fittings not yet ready to install,
28:58Son Angelo's accepted an offer he can't refuse.
29:03Okay, my girlfriend's here. I've got to go.
29:05All right, well, I ordered the clips for the lights, so instead of redoing the whole thing,
29:09we should be able to put them up with the clips.
29:11Sounds good.
29:12Okay. All right, buddy.
29:14All right, my one.
29:14All right.
29:15Yeah, let me see what we've got.
29:17Billy's now got the job of helping with the next task on Joanne's list.
29:21We need to figure out the vanities.
29:23Okay.
29:24Because I am a little bit concerned about the downstairs bathroom.
29:27Sure.
29:28All right.
29:29Joanne measured the two bathrooms and ordered bespoke vanity units for them online.
29:34Let's get it out the box.
29:38So, she needs to make sure they fit before a contractor adds the custom-made granite tops.
29:46So, I think that is going to have to come off.
29:52I also think...
29:53Can it go off? What is it, the base part?
29:55Oh, it's this, isn't it?
29:57Yeah, it's this trim.
29:58It's going to have to come off.
30:00I enjoy working this, Joanne, because we have so much fun.
30:03And we work through the mistakes, and we work through learning together.
30:09We've measured the space correctly, but unfortunately, it's so tight in here,
30:15that this part of the door frame on this side is preventing us from being able to slide in.
30:23I didn't even think about that.
30:24Projects about half an inch this way.
30:25So, this hole would have to come off.
30:29Okay, you go that way.
30:30I'll be the gentleman to take the weight at the bottom.
30:33Now, they're trying the unit upstairs to see if they can salvage at least one of them.
30:40All right, well, this one already looks like it's going to fit.
30:43Yes.
30:44But Joanne spotted another issue.
30:47This unit is smaller than the original one, so there's now a gap in the floor tiles.
30:52If we're going to take this strip of tile out and re-tile it under there, we can go with
30:57the same size,
30:58but we're not going to find a match.
30:59Erm, so we're going to be odd.
31:01It's going to be incredibly difficult to find a match because this house is subtle.
31:05There might be a box of spare tile left over in the shed.
31:08We have this idea of the plans and the goals of what's going to happen that day,
31:13and nine times out of ten, never goes according to plan.
31:18There's boxes down here.
31:20Okay.
31:21Oh, hallelujah.
31:23Perfect.
31:24Oh, my goodness.
31:24So, we'll just tile that?
31:25We'll just tile it.
31:27Before they can fit the new tiles in unit, they need to replace the skirting boards,
31:31so Joanne gets to work stripping the old ones out.
31:35God, these things are so old.
31:38This is the glamorous side of living in Florida.
31:42I actually really like doing this side of things.
31:46It's a lighting process.
31:48A couple of flips down the line, it could just be Billy and I just doing everything ourselves.
31:52But when you're not a skilled tradesperson, the risk of getting things wrong increases.
31:58I'm really hoping we can get these tiles out in one piece.
32:00That's my biggest worry right now, get these tiles out in one piece,
32:04and then be able to have a clean area here, tile it, make it level.
32:09Any more mishaps could prove costly to her profit,
32:13so Joanne needs the rest of the renovation to go without a hitch.
32:18God, if I crack one of these tiles, I'm going to cry.
32:29In South Pasadena, pub owner Lee from Liverpool is busy juggling his job
32:35and welcoming guests who come to a surprise party he's organised for wife Taryn.
32:42Oh my golly, what's going on?
32:44Why wouldn't you celebrate your wife's birthday in a big way, eh?
32:47I just love being around the family.
32:50How are you? I'm great, how are you doing?
32:52I didn't see you sleeping.
32:53Taryn's sister Rhonda has the job of keeping her occupied until 6pm,
32:58but now they're late and Lee can't get hold of them.
33:01Kim, where are they? Sorry, my mum. Where are they?
33:05They're all over the bridge.
33:07Luckily, Rhonda's daughter-in-law, Kim, is on the case.
33:10They're out to dinner right now, so I'm tracking her.
33:13That's me, that's her driving.
33:15They're on the move.
33:17Lee needs to make sure everyone else knows what to do.
33:20Hey, guys, so if I could just have your attention for a second.
33:23It's my wife's birthday and we're doing a little surprise birthday for her.
33:26Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
33:28She's going to be walking through the door in about 30 seconds,
33:33so we'll just do the surprise.
33:35After putting in a lot of time and effort...
33:38Oh, here we go. She's walking up.
33:40Lee's gathered around 30 of Taryn's nearest and dearest to help her celebrate.
33:46Surprise!
34:06I think that went as well as could be expected.
34:11Those are gorgeous.
34:14Completely blown away.
34:15Very loved and this is so nice.
34:19Lee's son, Conor, also has his own surprise.
34:23Conor's arranged a special cocktail for her.
34:25Taryn!
34:27Oh, God.
34:28Taryn's happy birthday, Cosmo.
34:30Apple. I love it.
34:32In the kitchen, Edie's finishing off her treat for Taryn.
34:36All right.
34:37We're going to light it and then we're going to bring it to Taryn.
34:40I need all of you to sing with me.
34:42After weeks of planning and the whole family chipping in, Edie's cake is the cherry on top
34:48of a whole evening of surprises.
34:50Happy birthday, dear Taryn.
34:57Happy birthday to you.
35:06The kids did so well.
35:08Conor's excellent behind the bar.
35:10Edie's fantastic and she's so proud of that cake she made.
35:13And Shay always mucks in.
35:14So Edie made that.
35:16Yeah!
35:17You are so talented.
35:19Oh, thank you.
35:20It was a hit.
35:22They like it.
35:25Actually, it's really good.
35:27Okay, yay!
35:29Paul Hollywood, I would love to be on the Great British Baking Show, so you know where I am.
35:359.87.
35:36Really, I would have settled for a seven.
35:39Anything above a five.
35:41I feel very loved and it was a massive surprise.
35:45I'm very lucky.
35:46They're great kids.
35:48I thought today went well.
35:50I'm really pleased with the way that went.
35:52Taryn had no idea, so that's fantastic.
35:56How are you?
35:56How are you?
35:57Good, thank you.
35:59I'm like, I'm like blown away.
36:02After pulling off a successful soiree with Taryn, her guests and the pub customers all happy,
36:08Lee can finally relax.
36:11So now we're probably going to have a few beers and celebrate Taryn's birthday.
36:17A fitting end to a great surprise.
36:20I'm glad to see you again.
36:34In the city of Clearwater, realtor Joanne from Hull and handyman Billy have finished fitting the lights and bathroom units
36:42at the condo.
36:44I like it.
36:45It will work, it will work.
36:47It's two months later and she's back with mum Jeannie.
36:51I have a couple of bits of stuff for staging.
36:53It was just looking a bit bare.
36:55She's hoping to make a decent profit on it.
36:59Well, you have to open the door anyway.
37:01The goal for today is have mum come and take a look at it with me and then go over
37:06pricing so
37:07we can get it listed and done today.
37:09Oh, I can't wait.
37:10Are you ready?
37:11Oh my God.
37:11I can't wait to see.
37:18When did you get that talented?
37:23Jeannie may now be Joanne's assistant at her real estate agency but she used to be a real estate agent
37:29herself so Joanne wants her opinion on what this fully renovated property could sell for.
37:35Are you ready for the kitchen?
37:39Holy moly.
37:43With lots of challenges along the way, Joanne and her friends and family have transformed the place
37:49from top to bottom.
37:51Oh my word, Joanne. This is...
37:54What a difference.
37:56I saw it when she first bought it and it was a mess.
38:02I am blown away at the effort they put in.
38:06It looks fantastic.
38:08After a mishap measuring for the bathroom vanity unit downstairs,
38:12Joanne sourced a new one which fits perfectly.
38:16Look at this.
38:18Oh, wow.
38:21Joanne, I'm just...
38:23Thank you, Mummy.
38:26Oh yeah, everything works, don't worry.
38:28I'm making sure.
38:29Joanne is such a hard worker.
38:32She puts 110, 120% effort into all she does.
38:38Well done.
38:40I'm so proud.
38:42And she and Billy have worked wonders finishing the upstairs bathroom too.
38:47Ooh, yes.
38:49Yeah, what a difference.
38:50Yeah.
38:51Oh, gosh.
38:52I can't believe the difference.
38:53Like, you would never know that this was...
38:56I know.
38:56Before Joanne puts the property in the market,
38:59she wants to add the final finishing touches.
39:02One of the most important things for the listing is to make sure that it's staged correctly
39:07and the pictures are done correctly because obviously that's what's going to draw people in.
39:12Where do you want this to go?
39:14Like right here, maybe?
39:15This one?
39:16Yeah.
39:16Yeah, because that one would go, yeah.
39:18After a last bit of tidying...
39:21Jeannie, come on, there's a little bit here.
39:26It's time to work out the final figures.
39:29The initial investment was 240.
39:32I've probably spent about 20,000.
39:34To try and make as much profit as possible, she's aiming high.
39:39I think I'm going to start 339, 990.
39:41All right, let me see how these pictures came out.
39:44Oh, that looks really good.
39:46All right, go ahead.
39:47Ooh, here we go.
39:49Let's make it live and then let's see it.
39:51And we're active.
39:55I'm really excited that we've managed to get it listed on the market.
40:00It's a bit quiet at the moment, but I've got every confidence because this is such a beautiful condo.
40:12I know, I know, I'm just like, after all these months of doing this, it's just a relief of having
40:18it started.
40:19It's on the market now.
40:20I know.
40:20Let's get it sold.
40:22It's a lot more challenging to live here than people realise.
40:24I work extremely hard, extremely long hours, but obviously the rewards pay off.
40:31Despite initial delays to the build, hitches learning on the job and a difficult property market,
40:37less than three months later, Joanne sold the house for $280,000, a 20 grand profit.
40:44And she's already moved on to her next doer-upper in nearby St Pete Beach.
40:50I just spoke to Chrissy. Everything's with the underwriters and everything looks good. Awesome.
40:58There is absolutely no way I would have this kind of life back home.
41:03The money that I'm making, the freedom, the travel, the living in paradise.
41:09I'm always going to be very, very thankful that I'm here.
41:18In Orlando, former army physical instructor turned fitness coach Andreas is treating his daughter Jen
41:26and his mum Helen to a memorable family trip before Jen goes back to England for a few months.
41:33This is the map, guys, that we're going to try and find some magic and cast some spells.
41:39The trip was really important because I feel like it just allows me to be present with her.
41:43This is the entrance to Hogsmeade, so then you've got one, two, three spots where we can cast some spells.
41:48Okay.
41:49Just to spend that time with her is precious right now because she's growing up quick.
41:54Ready, guys?
41:54Yeah.
41:55I have a great relationship with my dad. I think we're quite close,
41:58and I really appreciate everything he's done for me.
42:01To make it more fun, self-proclaimed Andreas Harry Potter Byrne has proposed a spell-off
42:07to see who's paying for dinner. First up, Jen.
42:13You've got some fireworks going off. Smashed it.
42:18Each magical spot has its own special effects, but it turns out Andreas isn't a natural wizard after all.
42:27Come on, man. I guess I'm not doing this properly.
42:31I'm not wizardy enough. What's going on? You want to go, Mum?
42:39There you go.
42:42Mum smashes her, too. Could it be second time lucky for Andreas?
42:47Incendio.
42:50Oh, no, that was me.
42:51What? No way.
42:54Did you actually?
42:55Yeah, I felt it like...
42:55You felt the vibration unbelievable.
42:58She's obviously way better at being a wizard than me.
43:00She can take this crown right now, but the war isn't over.
43:05Dinner is on Andreas, then, and what better than a good old British classic?
43:12The biggest meal I miss about being in the States is, like, fish and chips.
43:16Because you generally can't get a good one.
43:18I know, yeah.
43:19We'll put it to the test, shall we?
43:20Yeah, exactly.
43:21Do you fish and chips?
43:22Yeah, thank you so much.
43:24It looks really good. I can't wait to have it.
43:27When I go back, I'm definitely going to miss my dad, because we've been with each other, like, 24-7,
43:32basically.
43:36Chippy chips.
43:37Good. Chippy chips.
43:39But I think it's going to be even more special when I see him again.
43:44All right, let's do it. That was delicious.
43:45Wow, that was really good.
43:47It was really good.
43:49With their energy levels restored, Jen and Andreas now want to tackle the park's biggest ride, the Velocicoaster.
43:58But Mum Helen's decided to give it a miss.
44:01You can hear the screams from here.
44:03Oh, my God.
44:04Look, you're missing out, Mum.
44:06I'm sure I am.
44:06This might be the last time you ever get to do this.
44:09That's okay. I'm good with that as well.
44:13I am extremely proud of Andreas, what he's achieved.
44:16And I think it's all down to the seven years of military that he had.
44:20When he came out, he knew exactly what he wanted to do, and he's achieved it.
44:23See you later, Mum. Have a good one.
44:25Wish us luck.
44:25Yeah.
44:28It's Florida's tallest and fastest roller coaster with a drop of 140 feet, reaching speeds of up to 70 miles
44:38an hour.
44:38So Andreas and Jen will need to hang on to their hats and stomachs after that big dinner.
44:45Yay! You made it!
44:48Yeah!
44:50You did it!
44:52That was so good.
44:52Fantastic.
44:53That was amazing.
44:54Yeah.
44:54I'm so glad you did it.
44:55Yeah, definitely.
44:56Yeah.
44:57I'm so glad.
44:57You're fearless now.
