Uncharted with Ray Goggins - Season 2 Episode 3 - Angela Scanlon & Kyla Cobbler
Transcript
00:04In the most remote corners of the planet, well-known faces take on an extraordinary wilderness challenge.
00:13Holy shit.
00:16Holy Jesus, look at this.
00:20Guided by former Special Forces soldier, Ray Goggins, this is a journey into the unknown.
00:27Shit.
00:30I'm gone.
00:32Thrown into some of the most hostile environments on Earth.
00:39It's fucking mental.
00:44Jesus Christ.
00:45Here, fame and reputation count for nothing.
00:51No comforts.
00:54No shortcuts.
00:56Do they have what it takes to survive the wild?
01:01And when everything is stripped away, does it reveal more about who they truly are?
01:09This is Uncharted.
01:29I was in Marrakesh once before, and I bought a lovely rug, but this feels quite far away from there.
01:36I feel like people come here for a winter sunbreak, and yet...
01:46when this amazing opportunity came to my doorstep, the only thing that I don't want is snow. I just don't
01:52want to be in snow. And I was like, Morocco, amazing. And I arrive. And everyone's skiing.
02:02I'm not physically or mentally or emotionally prepared. I've left my two children. I'm like, yeah.
02:11I'm like, yeah.
02:12TV presenter, Angela Scanlon, and comedian, Kyla Cobbler, only met for the first time this morning. But they already have
02:20one thing in common. A deep discomfort with the extreme outdoors.
02:26For Kyla and for Angela, it's going to be scary for the two of them. And will they come to
02:31a stage where they can't cope? I don't know. Let's see.
02:35You all right? Yeah. Cold as the body is. You okay? Yeah, Grant. Look at this, look. Isn't it amazing?
02:40Yeah, no.
02:40We'll scare the shit out of you in patches, but don't worry about it. Okay, what kind of, what are
02:43we talking about? Don't worry about it.
02:45I'm not the kind of person. Like, there's people that go into the woods, and they're like, it's east. You
02:49know, like, I walk out of a hotel room and get fucking lost.
02:51It'll be treacherous in patches. Treacherous. Yeah. I think the lack of control is the biggest thing. And usually, I'm
02:57in control of what I do. And I'm absolutely not.
03:01We will have a bit of crack, right? We will. Yeah, okay. But it is very serious. A lot can
03:06go wrong. And you can die very quickly up here.
03:08Please don't say that. My job, like, I want them to actually go away from this week a bit tired,
03:15but having learned something new about themselves, about other people, about, like, doing shit that's really hard, and how you
03:22get through it.
03:22Now, you will be nervous, and you will be scared at times, but that's okay. But it should be humbling.
03:27It will be, for all of us. And look, it's about the three of us getting through it together.
03:33Ray has designed a route through the exposed plateaus of Morocco's High Atlas Mountains, with each day deliberately tougher than
03:40the last.
03:41It's a climber's paradise, but for Angela and Kyla, this will be a monumental challenge.
03:47Getting kidnapped. That would be my worst fear. And then I don't like heights as well. And I think I'm
03:52too big to kidnap, so I reckon they'll be the heights.
03:56Heights are a bit of a problem. Like, going up a ladder is not great for me.
04:04So I am a scaredy cat, because I'm a bit scared still when I'm at home on my own, and
04:08I hate that feeling. So I'd love if I finished the week and I just felt braver.
04:12Uh-oh. That's a bit wobbly. This one here, yeah.
04:19The rugged landscape presents an extra challenge for Kyla. She lives with dyspraxia, a neurological condition that affects her balance
04:28and coordination.
04:30Dyspraxia is just, it's like this weird disconnect between your body and yourself, you know. And it is just, like,
04:36in layman's terms, you're just really clumsy.
04:39As a dyspraxic person, sometimes I can't trust my own body, you know, which is scary.
04:44Here. Thanks.
04:52We were climbing up that little thing, I was like, I'm not going to be able to do this.
04:57Your biggest enemy is yourself. You're in your own way.
05:01Sometimes when I'm on stage and it's going really, really well, and I'm in the middle of it, I hear
05:05a voice and it's like, you're going to lose them.
05:07For the two of you as well, like, in the public eye, it's unforgiving.
05:10Yeah, you're public facing, yeah. You know, any slight mistake.
05:13Like, for me, live telly, it doesn't go right. That's the very nature of it.
05:18Yeah, exactly.
05:19And the things that you don't prepare for are often the, like...
05:22The funny.
05:23Most...
05:23Absolutely, like...
05:24The off-cost things.
05:25The thing you would think that was going to be the worst is the best.
05:27Yeah.
05:34Oh, Jesus.
05:36People think I'm fit. I don't know why.
05:38Like, I would say I'm... I might look fit, but I'm rotten inside.
05:46How are you feeling? You alright?
05:47I'm alright. Sweaty.
05:48Ah, you will be, yeah. It'll come and go.
05:51Oh, my God. Is that a tin of tuna?
05:53I haven't had a packed lunch in years.
05:56I'm usually making them, but I've got two bougie daughters.
05:59My eldest likes olives in her packed lunch.
06:01Oh, Jesus. Good stuff.
06:02Is there any... any kind of, um...
06:05Like, process, you know?
06:07Should be... we'd be...
06:09Staggering.
06:09Ugh! Tuna.
06:11Sorry.
06:12I'll swap you something from my bag for the tuna if you want.
06:15Fuck me.
06:15You don't eat tuna, no?
06:17I do.
06:19I think I knew fairly quickly
06:21that any of the luxuries
06:24that I might enjoy were nowhere to be found.
06:27I might stick with my cheese.
06:29Do you want my cheese, babe?
06:30Do you want my tuna?
06:31Yeah. Go on.
06:32Teamwork.
06:33Teamwork is right, yeah.
06:34Very comforting, though.
06:36Cheese and slabs of white bread.
06:38Yeah.
06:38There's something very rustic about it, isn't it?
06:40But there were certainly times where I thought...
06:43this was a big mistake.
06:50These early doubts are reinforced
06:52as the conditions suddenly get tougher.
06:56They've had the highest fall of snow in 30 years
06:58over the last week.
07:00So, like, it's going to be a challenge.
07:04Is this genuinely, Ray, the easy day?
07:07Yeah, it's just a start-off day.
07:08Fuck you.
07:10I hate the cold.
07:13I mean, I have a hot water bottle that I bring everywhere,
07:16even in the summer.
07:21As we were walking up, particularly when we got into the snow line,
07:24the atmosphere changed.
07:27I never really, like, walked on snow.
07:30That, for some reason, was getting the shit out of me.
07:39First cry.
07:40What?
07:40Oh, babe, are you okay?
07:41Are you all right?
07:42I know, I just hate that you're falling down.
07:43Oh, honey, come here.
07:45It's so steep, and I'm like, oh, my God, if I take a hopper now.
07:47Do you know what?
07:48I think that was the first time I saw, like,
07:49kind of, Angela's maternal side kick in,
07:52where I kind of felt the spark of friendship,
07:56where I was like, okay, cool, she's just really nice.
07:58No, I'm grand.
07:59Honestly, I know everything's okay.
08:00I just need to...
08:01Yeah, go to.
08:02Yeah, I was just trying not to...
08:03I was like, why?
08:03I just want to keep...
08:05You're okay.
08:07You're okay.
08:08She got upset so many times, climbing up that snow.
08:12I was kind of going, like, when we get to the bigger stuff,
08:15is this girl going to be able for this at all?
08:28Well, just take nice deep breaths and relax here.
08:30Sorry, I'm so scared.
08:32No, you're grand, girl.
08:33Just take deep breaths.
08:34It's okay, you're doing it, girl.
08:36You're fighting so hard.
08:37Well done.
08:40And the tears is like, it's just that absolute lack of control.
08:43Like, if I don't cry, it'll become a panic attack.
08:45I'm going to go really slow.
08:46So you tell me when you're ready now, okay?
08:48Yeah.
08:48We'll go.
08:48I'm ready.
08:49Okay, good stuff.
08:52It doesn't stop me from doing anything.
08:54And it doesn't make me feel weak.
08:56It just lets me release the little pressure cooker
08:59and then I just keep going.
09:06Oh, well done, Kyla.
09:08I know.
09:18Oh, good lord above.
09:20Come here.
09:21Well done.
09:22Reaching the top of today's climb,
09:24they've passed their first test of the week.
09:28Oh, my God.
09:30I was shitting myself.
09:33I remember speaking to my husband and being like,
09:35oh, I hope I don't like cry-cry on TV.
09:39Awkward.
09:40Jesus.
09:43Awkward, it's so quiet.
09:48Now, they were shitting themselves, the two of them were.
09:51But once we got up, there was a bit of euphoria.
09:53They were delighted and I thought to myself,
09:56okay, if we can achieve stuff as we go, they love that.
10:00They love that feeling of getting something done.
10:02It's actually grand.
10:03We're out of that mad, deep stuff.
10:05Here, touch wood.
10:06Don't be fucking jinxing it.
10:07I know, sorry.
10:08We're completely safe.
10:09She gets cocky, then.
10:10Yeah.
10:11Hasn't a fucking rashers.
10:13Ignorance is bliss, I told you.
10:16Whoop!
10:18Oh, fuck.
10:19Oh, she's up to the thighs.
10:21Okay.
10:22Which way did you...
10:23Are you going that way?
10:24It works.
10:25Well done.
10:26Yeah!
10:34Whoop-a-doo.
10:35There's a big hole.
10:37When we got to the top, I thought, great, job done.
10:41And then the downhill was unbelievably difficult.
10:46This is going to be like...
10:47You're going to stick, stick always in front.
10:49Oh, yeah, stick, stick.
10:50Always in front.
10:51But it was like wet clay and we were trying to go down
10:53and we just couldn't keep our footing.
10:56Yeah, it's monotonous, isn't it?
11:00Well done.
11:01This is life with dyspraxia, my friend.
11:04Here, I'm just going to step over here and take a hand
11:06to bring you up.
11:07Yeah.
11:08I have a fucking liability.
11:09No, you're not.
11:09Don't worry.
11:11With Kyla, you know, she probably was thinking out of the
11:14three of us that, like, she's the weakest or the one
11:16who isn't doing the best.
11:17But, like, getting it right, getting it wrong, doesn't matter.
11:20It's how you deal with it is the most important thing.
11:22And she kept getting up and up and up and up.
11:24So, I was going, yeah, I'm deadly.
11:28I might cry, but I just need to...
11:29I'll cry.
11:30Once you're not hurt.
11:31Other people would give up.
11:32They'll mourn.
11:33They'll bitch.
11:34Not once.
11:35And she's very...
11:36She'd laugh about it.
11:37She probably makes a joke then really quick.
11:39And the whole timeline, we're actually joking about it.
11:42And then it drops and catches like fire.
11:44It's a sounder.
11:45It's a sounder.
11:47It's a sounder.
11:47It's a sounder.
11:48It's a sounder in the underground.
11:50And I was like, uh-oh.
11:51Impromptu dance sesh.
12:02I think we look just as sexy as girls allowed did.
12:06When you see someone else is weird, I was like, oh yeah.
12:09Okay, cool.
12:09We're in.
12:10As I said, it was like that kind of those first sparks of friendship.
12:13Which is lovely.
12:14It's lovely.
12:19After nine tough hours of trekking, they reach a remote mountain refuge.
12:25This will be home for the night.
12:29Oh, look at this one.
12:30Doing the old fancy porno.
12:32I'll tell you.
12:35Oh, I love a lot of times, girl.
12:37Cheers.
12:39Your knees are sore and your feet, the tips of your toes are freezing and your hands are sore and
12:43your lips are chapped.
12:44And you're thinking, oh, look, this is another, like, five days.
12:49Would you have a cup of tea for me?
12:50I'll have a cup of tea.
12:51Would you have a cup of tea for me?
12:52There's cocaine in it.
12:53There's cocaine in it.
12:54There's coke in it.
12:55Come here.
12:56Are you rekt?
12:57How are we feeling?
12:58Come here.
12:58Are you rekt?
13:00I'm tender.
13:01I'm absolutely fucking bait, lads.
13:03Yeah.
13:04Genuinely.
13:04I kept moving when we came in.
13:06I changed my knickers.
13:07Me too, yeah.
13:08I changed my clothes and I'm going to wear these tomorrow.
13:10Yeah.
13:11Dead wet.
13:11It just means I can get dressed in the sleeping bag in the morning.
13:15Was it what you expected?
13:16It was kind of physically, obviously, your glutes are burning, but mentally, actually having to really focus on every single
13:25step was intense.
13:26I thought we did a great old job today.
13:30He dived into it.
13:31Some more than others.
13:32I mean, a couple of backflips.
13:34A couple of hoppers.
13:35Yeah, I think we might need a stunt double for you for the next phase for tomorrow.
13:40Ray said tomorrow's the hardest day.
13:42Did you, Ray?
13:42Every day's the hardest day.
13:43Ray said it's the hardest day.
13:44Can you tell us?
13:45And he said, don't tell Angela.
13:46Say not.
13:47He did, yeah.
13:48So don't tell Angela.
13:49I do feel a little outnumbered by the Cork massive here.
13:52I know.
13:52I'm going to put a complaint into HR.
13:54They're both the kind of people that will worry so much about what's coming the next day, which isn't a
14:00good thing to be doing in this environment, to be fair.
14:15To Kyla, I was like, like, brace yourself, babe.
14:18I think there's a climb ahead.
14:19And she was like, we're in a climber's hostel.
14:21She was like, oh my God, what makes you think that?
14:23And I was like, look around you.
14:30How are you feeling today?
14:32I'm so shitting myself about climbing.
14:36Like, the biggest enemy is the one in your head.
14:38Yeah.
14:38There's no mountain out here that'll beat you if you don't want it to.
14:41I'm not afraid of dying.
14:42I'm afraid of heights.
14:44Yeah.
14:46Dying?
14:46We have to do that anyway.
14:47I don't have to go up a fucking mountain.
14:49That's the whole point.
14:52What?
14:53Oh my God.
14:54The belief you got out yesterday, right?
14:56Watching you on that mountain, right?
14:58Yeah, yeah, yeah.
14:59Like, it's the same here.
15:00For me, the idea of a height that's like, you know, cliff edge or where I'm up and can look
15:07back down and feel sick and paralyzed, kind of.
15:11Yeah.
15:12Like, all you need to win is like, win a minute.
15:16Yeah.
15:16Then win the next minute.
15:17Yeah.
15:17Don't think about the whole day.
15:21My kind of, for my trend and what I've done in my career, you know, you can't be even, sometimes
15:26you can't even think five minutes ahead.
15:28You just, the next step sometimes, next step.
15:31And when you do that, then you tend not to get overwhelmed by the stuff that might be coming.
15:38This is Chris and TJ that you'll meet now who are absolutely fantastic climbers.
15:42They look very high tech.
15:43Angela.
15:44Lovely to meet you.
15:45We were very lucky to have, like, a world class mountain support team.
15:50Like, because look, I'm a mountaineer.
15:51I've done mountain stuff.
15:53I'm not a mountaineer.
15:53Like, I'm not an expert by any means.
15:56With decades of experience in these mountains, Chris and TJ will guide the team up the Berber Highway, an ancient
16:03shepherd's trail to the high plateaus.
16:06It's a route Ray has deliberately chosen to test Angela and Kyla.
16:11I want them to push beyond the ceiling every time.
16:15It's not just do one thing and then that's us.
16:17We're going to plateau.
16:18I'm going to go up another bit.
16:23What would your friends think you're doing this, Kyla?
16:25I don't think they believe it.
16:27The Berber Highway, it drops off really quick.
16:30It becomes a ledge, which is probably, you know, two foot wide.
16:35And there's a drop to your desk to the right.
16:50It's okay.
16:51It's okay.
16:52It's okay.
16:52It's okay.
16:52I just have to breathe.
16:53I'm fine.
16:54I promise.
16:55I just need to breathe.
16:56Get your breath.
16:57Now, the tears will come all day.
16:59Yeah.
16:59Just right out the storm.
17:01I'm just genuinely so scared of heights.
17:03Like, I was freaking out.
17:05Like, it was so...
17:06I felt like I had no control over my body.
17:08You're okay.
17:09You're okay.
17:10You're okay.
17:10Keep breathing now.
17:10Nice and deep.
17:12I'm doing it.
17:13You're so doing it, Kyla.
17:14Yeah, I'm doing it.
17:20It was like she was expressing the things that I've actually felt.
17:25And then I could take on a different role.
17:27All right, babe.
17:30Okay.
17:33Oh, Jesus Christ.
17:34Don't look back.
17:34Don't look back.
17:35Angela tends to push things inside, but she's really like, we're getting this done.
17:40You know what I mean?
17:40Like, she puts herself under a lot of pressure.
17:43It's almost like I need blinkers like a horse.
17:45And I just need to keep looking straight ahead.
17:48Because if I see what's happening over the edge of that.
17:50Okay.
17:51I'm in trouble.
17:53Okay.
17:54Oh, please, please.
18:01Halfway up the Berber Highway, they reach the toughest section of the climb.
18:07From here, they must clip into chains for the almost vertical ascent to the top.
18:22I'm going to cry again.
18:23Sorry, but I'm okay.
18:24I promise.
18:24Keep crying.
18:26Crying's good.
18:26Emotion's out.
18:27Okay.
18:28Ray, even though he comes from this like, crazy special op background, he didn't doubt me because of the tears.
18:35He just celebrated the fact that I kept going.
18:38And that's a really beautiful thing.
18:45Well done, Kyla.
18:47Yeah.
18:47What about me?
18:48What about, well done, Ray?
18:49I'm struggling.
18:49You're brilliant, too.
18:51Here, Kyla, why don't you look at this little patch?
18:53Here.
18:54Sit back.
18:56Okay.
18:57Okay.
18:57All right.
18:58Yeah, yeah.
18:59Yeah.
19:01We stopped and had something to eat on a bit of a ledge, which included a half a boiled spud
19:06with the skin on.
19:07Cold, sweaty spud.
19:10And I love spuds.
19:12And she's sitting in that fucking mountain with the half boiled spud.
19:16Not even a bit of butter on the spud.
19:18I've never had tears in my eyes eating a potato.
19:21Oh.
19:23This is like my happiest food.
19:31Round it for us.
19:42As the team climb higher into the Atlas Mountains, it's Angela who is now starting to struggle.
19:49Here, actually.
19:50She was quite confident as normal.
19:52She's fighting.
19:52She's a fighter.
19:53That's what she does.
19:54But I could see the tightness starting to come in her a bit.
19:57No.
19:57See, this is now.
19:58I'll actually vomit if I actually see how high we're up.
20:01Oh, fuck me.
20:02No, no, no.
20:03Yeah.
20:03Cause then I will just, honestly, I don't think we can have two of us fucking crying on a cliff.
20:07So I just need to keep my eyes on the fucking road.
20:10And then I noticed she verbalises to herself as well, which is great.
20:15Cause it's like, you know, a little coping technique to manage.
20:18I genuinely need blinkers.
20:20I need blinkers.
20:21Now I see what's happening.
20:24I felt like suddenly the bits that I keep tucked in were like all hanging out of me.
20:37I don't love this now.
20:38I really am not loving this moment in time.
20:44But we're here.
20:46We're alive.
20:48We are doing it.
20:55You all right?
20:56Yeah.
20:57Good stuff.
20:57You're flying it, girl.
20:59Terror looks good on you.
21:00Yeah, thanks.
21:01Yeah.
21:01That's great.
21:03You all right?
21:04Oh, I'm going to grave you, Greg.
21:06You're the strong one.
21:07You're the strong one.
21:11Look at you conquering the mountain.
21:14Oh, my God.
21:15Look at me.
21:18This is incredible.
21:23Look at these.
21:27Now you're the king of the mountains.
21:32I had given everything on the way up to like hold it together, to do the little dance, to keep
21:37myself sane, to like be easy breezy, and then I was like empty.
21:43The euphoria of reaching the top quickly fades.
21:47They still have to climb down the other side to reach camp.
21:51All of the fear that I'd kept at bay hit me.
21:56I actually felt really confident, and Angela was actually a bit more nervous, I think.
22:01See these lovely little steps here.
22:03Look.
22:04To retrieve me the rot.
22:05Yeah.
22:06A little one here.
22:07Yeah.
22:09Kyla, in particular, loves to hear you saying, well done, do this, do that.
22:14She loves the guidance.
22:15Angela, on the other hand, doesn't react very well.
22:19Oh, my God.
22:21On the fucking wood.
22:22Are you joking me?
22:23Angela, the chain won't have dropped.
22:25No, no, no, no.
22:26I cannot do with a pep talk now when I'm in this town.
22:28Okay.
22:28Go for it, girl.
22:30And I was like, Angela, like, the steel will hold you.
22:32And she was like, I don't need a pep talk right now, thank you.
22:38Sorry, Kyla, for being a scorpy little scorp.
22:40Are you for real?
22:41I was like...
22:42We're on a literally...
22:43It's like when my husband gives me a high five after a run and I'm like, you know what you
22:46can do.
22:46It's like your husband teaches you to drive.
22:48Exactly.
22:48Don't you fucking show me that.
22:49High five, well done.
22:50I'm like, excuse me.
22:51I love the openness of it.
22:53Like, what I don't like is someone, you know, pouting about something and carrying it internally,
22:57and then they'll explode.
23:02Like, I think even walking along this, I'd shit the bed.
23:05Before.
23:06Look at you now, like...
23:07In my head now, I'm like, what else could I do?
23:16Batteries running on empty.
23:18They arrive exhausted at tonight's camp.
23:21Look at this.
23:23This is fancy.
23:24It's cool, isn't it?
23:25When I saw the tent, I was like, joy.
23:29There's our bed spaces.
23:30Are you sleeping with us?
23:32I am.
23:32I am.
23:34Looks like piss, doesn't it?
23:35Looks like nuns piss.
23:36Yeah.
23:36Well, what's the difference?
23:37Nuns piss is really weak.
23:39Is it?
23:40From what?
23:41Their nuns.
23:43Their lack of usage.
23:44Their nuns.
23:47Chin, chin, chin.
23:48Now, fair to us and those like us.
23:49Congratulations.
23:50Is that the right word?
23:52Yeah, what do you say?
23:53We have to climb a mountain.
23:53Congratulations.
23:54Well done.
23:54We're alive.
23:55You're still alive.
23:56Another day.
23:57Oh my God.
24:10Today.
24:11Yeah, it was definitely...
24:12There's a lot to think about.
24:13I was so scared.
24:15The good thing is you don't bottle it.
24:16You just pour it out and get off.
24:18No, I don't.
24:18No, it goes everywhere.
24:19Yeah, yeah.
24:20It's great.
24:21I kind of envy that actually.
24:22My problem, if I keep moving forward, I'm grand.
24:25But the minute I've got to sit in my own emotion.
24:27Do you find if you're moving, you can outrun it?
24:28Absolutely.
24:29Is that your view?
24:30Yeah, yeah.
24:30If I'm moving and I keep going...
24:32If you're taking action...
24:33Yeah, but sitting in it is terrifying.
24:35When Ray said, you know, if you keep moving, you can outrun it.
24:39And I...
24:41That, like, really hits me.
24:42Because I think I, you know, spend all my time kind of...
24:48Yeah.
24:48Going.
24:49Yes, that's right.
24:52You know?
24:52Well, yeah, when you climb a mountain, talking to all this stuff.
24:55Yeah.
24:56Yeah.
24:56But do you know what that does for you, though?
24:57Like, those veneers that we put on, they disappear, like,
25:01because the people you're working with then, it's very real.
25:03Yeah.
25:03And it's honest.
25:04All the feelings are honest.
25:05All the emotions are honest.
25:06Yeah.
25:06You can say, fuck off, and then two minutes have a hug.
25:09Yeah.
25:09That's the way it works.
25:11I mean, I just was so impressed seeing you, how, like, terrified you were.
25:22And I thought, there's no way.
25:23Yeah.
25:24And then, like, actually, I love that aspect in any person.
25:28Yeah.
25:29Where you're like, I don't give a fuck how terrifying this is.
25:32I'm doing it.
25:34Yeah.
25:34You know?
25:34And it's so, like, lovely to see and appreciate in yourself.
25:38Yeah.
25:39Do you think you're kindred spirits?
25:40Because you both have that.
25:41Yeah.
25:42Do you know what I mean?
25:43Yeah.
25:43You make a friendship with somebody in the normal world, you know?
25:46Yeah.
25:46You have to build it.
25:47And it might take years.
25:49So, like, this is like a micro climate of friendship building.
25:52When you're going through that terror, you become very close, very quick.
25:56So, for me, then, all these environments that I love doing this, right, is great.
26:00Because it brings me back to something that's very simple.
26:04Yeah.
26:04Because, like, even for yourself, you know, when we're all walking along there in the quiet moments.
26:09Yeah.
26:09What you're thinking about in your head, where you're going.
26:11Yeah.
26:11Like, you don't get that when you're busy at home, you're on your phone.
26:14You're going to do's, you're doing shows, you're presenting, you're, like.
26:17Yeah.
26:17So, I love this because there's a certain power comes with it for me.
26:21It's just...
26:21It's humbling.
26:22It is, like, and it's amazing.
26:23So humbling.
26:23Like, you just have to, like, lean into it, like.
26:25Yeah.
26:26Which you did today.
26:33Are you snug?
26:34Yes.
26:35My feet are warm.
26:36Yeah.
26:37Saying that I nearly fucking killed you today.
26:38Ha!
26:39You deserve a cup of tea.
26:41When you get in, into your sleeping bag, and it was ball tick.
26:46I had to piss so badly one time, and I was like, I'm just going to piss here.
26:49But then I did get up at a very timely moment where there was a beautiful shooting stare.
26:57I was really awestruck by it.
26:59I just felt like I was peeking in on the galaxy.
27:13As the sun starts to warm the rocks, Ray leads his two nervous teammates towards the next test.
27:20Okay, so we're going to descend here on the map sail.
27:25A 100-meter drop down the sheer cliff face.
27:30So, how do you feel about it?
27:31Ready.
27:32Good.
27:33I love that as an answer.
27:35Yeah, ready.
27:36You are ready.
27:36Yeah.
27:37I can see the fire in your eyes again, look.
27:38Yeah.
27:39They were kind of very, very nervous about it.
27:41They were both terrified.
27:47You can use your hands on the rocks as well, Silt, if you want to be happy with that.
27:52Good stuff.
27:53Brilliant.
27:54Nice and steady.
27:55Relax.
27:56You're okay.
27:56Yeah, I'm going to do it, I promise.
27:57I know you are, I know you are.
27:59When you're going down now, right, what I want you to do is edge down to the edge.
28:02And you see, when it starts going vertical.
28:04Go on, girl.
28:05When you start going down, right, listen to me now.
28:08Okay, relax, get a breath.
28:09I'm getting a giddy bag.
28:10That's okay, you can giddy all you want.
28:11Giddy's good.
28:11Giddy's good, I think.
28:12I can't believe I'm doing this.
28:14You're doing it.
28:14If you look.
28:16I'm not going to look.
28:17Okay, so what I want you to do is, feet nice and wide now, and I want you to start
28:20walking back a little bit to the edge.
28:30Well done.
28:31Nice set.
28:31Don't do that.
28:33Sorry.
28:33No big steps.
28:34Remember yesterday, small steps.
28:36Yeah.
28:36I can't lock my...
28:37You can.
28:37Okay, relax.
28:40Everything else we had done, I was with Ray and Angela.
28:43So, like, I had my little, like, team of people that, like, supported me and helped me.
28:47So, I was so scared going down.
28:48That was the first time we had been on our own, really, doing anything.
28:57Simon.
28:58Well done.
28:59What song are you singing there?
29:01I'm gonna see Simon.
29:03And I started saying Simon's name, my husband.
29:05And I was like, because he's big rock climber.
29:07Like, this is like his fucking dream, the lunatic.
29:09I'm gonna see Simon.
29:12And he's gonna make me coffee.
29:14In the morning.
29:17And cuddle.
29:18I'm gonna have cuddles.
29:20La la la la.
29:21Thinking about my flat white, that he's gonna make me, because he drinks me coffee in bed,
29:24because I fucking married a legend.
29:25Kyla, can you hear me?
29:27Simon.
29:27Yeah.
29:28Good woman.
29:29Are you good?
29:30I'm good.
29:30Good woman.
29:31Good woman.
29:32Simon.
29:35Oh, fuck.
29:37I'm a bit stuck.
29:43Yeah, I got it.
29:45Sorry.
29:48I thought Kyla, even though she was absolutely terrified, she was actually very, very good.
30:00And then when I got to the ground, my chest just went.
30:13I'm gonna stand here by me now.
30:15I'm just gonna change my little position for you.
30:18Kyla would have been the scare champion up to then.
30:20But I think they passed the baton at that stage.
30:23I think Angela became the most scared.
30:26Deep breaths.
30:27And focus.
30:28Okay.
30:28All you have to remember, right?
30:30Yeah.
30:30Small steps.
30:31Feet wide.
30:33Knees locked.
30:34Good girl.
30:38Okay.
30:38Okay.
30:39You alright?
30:39Yeah.
30:40Let's go.
30:47That's okay.
30:48That's okay.
30:48Just reset.
30:50Okay.
30:50Flat feet.
30:51And just tiny movements on the legs.
30:54Oh no.
30:54Fuck.
30:55Fuck.
30:55Lock your legs.
30:56You're okay.
30:56You're away from the hole now.
30:58Get your feet set now again.
31:04At no point am I enjoying this.
31:08But we are here.
31:10Please don't fucking start cheering for me or I'll go nuts.
31:13Are you talking to me?
31:14Are you bored?
31:15I'm alive, babe.
31:16Leave me alone.
31:17Good girl.
31:17You are alive.
31:18Well done.
31:19I fucking am never.
31:20Let me hear you.
31:21Okay.
31:21I like it.
31:22It's fine.
31:23It's fucking spray crack.
31:25And then I realised I really wasn't that far down the cliff.
31:29And then I had quite a distance to go.
31:31And then I really panicked.
31:33That's it.
31:34Get your feet right now.
31:35Good stuff.
31:36Help.
31:37And all I could think.
31:39I have two small kids at home.
31:43Who I adore.
31:44And I was like, what the fuck am I doing?
31:49Lads, I'm gone.
31:50I've literally lost my legs.
31:52Oh no.
31:54I love my job.
31:56I love like pushing myself and proving that I can do things.
32:03But, yeah.
32:05I had a moment where I thought that's maybe a bit much.
32:10Sorry.
32:14I can't do it.
32:15I can't fucking do it.
32:17Relax.
32:18Please.
32:19Guys.
32:22What am I going to do?
32:23What am I going to do?
32:24What am I going to do?
32:28Nobody's going to get you, babe.
32:30We'll get it together.
32:32And then Kyla bless her.
32:34After me going, don't give me a bloody bed talk.
32:37Angela, you're nearly there.
32:39If you keep moving, it doesn't matter if you're in contact.
32:42Because that's friendship, right?
32:43Even though she said, don't encourage me and don't say something to me,
32:47I trusted our friendship and the bond,
32:49even though it's only been a couple of days.
32:51And I was like, no, she needs this now.
32:52Let's go. Let's go.
32:53Moving down.
32:54Who cares about the legs?
32:55Bum out.
32:56You're on the ground.
32:57Dad.
32:58You're here.
32:59My God.
33:01Oh, my God.
33:01You read the encouragement well.
33:03Oh, babe.
33:04It was awful.
33:06Good job.
33:07You did it.
33:08Good job.
33:09Oh, my God.
33:10And I put my hands on her and she put her hands on me.
33:12And we were like, touch, and I'm not really a touchy person.
33:15And that was, I think, a real, like, welding.
33:19That was hideous.
33:21Hideous.
33:21Worst thing I've ever done in my life.
33:23Yeah, me too.
33:54That was awful.
33:55Oh, my God.
33:57And there was two different women on the ground when I got down there.
34:01Like, there was a small bit of an insurrection about to happen, I thought.
34:04I'm fairly close to Rage now.
34:06Are you?
34:06I'll be honest.
34:07I'm so over it.
34:19With morale at rock bottom, Ray guides a reluctant Angela and Kyla towards this evening's surprise
34:26lodgings.
34:27I was super pissed off because I feel like we didn't get a reward for doing the hard thing.
34:31And then we're like, walking down, walking down, we see this little house, and they're
34:34like, we're going to stay there tonight.
34:36This is nice, isn't it?
34:37Hello.
34:40Good bed.
34:41Tonight, they bed down here, in the home of a local Berber family.
34:46Will you tell them we don't usually smell like this?
34:50After that day that was actually traumatic, and, you know, to be welcomed by these beautiful
34:56people into their beautiful home, and for them to share, you know, their table.
35:02What's your name?
35:04Fatima.
35:04Fatima.
35:05Fatima.
35:05And your name?
35:07Fatima.
35:08Fatima.
35:08So hilarious.
35:09Yeah.
35:11Oh, thank you.
35:13Sláinte.
35:15Sláinte.
35:16Sláinte.
35:17Sláinte.
35:17Sláinte.
35:29Sláinte.
35:31Sláinte.
35:32Sláinte.
35:34Sláinte.
35:35Sláinte.
35:36Sláinte.
35:37Sláinte.
35:37Sláinte.
35:38Sláinte.
35:38Sláinte.
35:38Sláinte.
35:39Sláinte.
35:39Sláinte.
35:39Sláinte.
35:40Sláinte.
35:41Sláinte.
35:41Sláinte.
35:41Sláinte.
35:42Sláinte.
35:43Sláinte.
35:44Sláinte.
35:46Sláinte.
35:47people talking to a man, one in French and one in Italian.
35:50How many babies?
35:52Quanti fillies?
35:54Six!
35:55Oh, give me one.
35:56Give me one, just one, just one, the one you don't like.
36:00One you don't like.
36:01Give me one.
36:10OK.
36:10In here.
36:13Oh, God.
36:14Oh, God.
36:19I'm so tired.
36:23You're like the Holy Mary.
36:32Outside, the men round up tonight's dinner.
36:36The butchering is their role, while the women will prepare and cook the meat.
36:41Like, I come from a family of fishermen and hunters and stuff,
36:44so I've seen, like, the process of, like, animals being gutted and killed.
36:50I look over at the tree and they're, like, slaughtering a goat.
36:53It was gnarly.
36:57I kept thinking, oh, my God, this is the sort of booty shit you're begging for at home.
37:01Do you know what I mean? Farm to fork?
37:04You don't eat it?
37:05Yes.
37:05This is such a beautiful task compared to the mountain ranges.
37:11Tomatoes.
37:14Tomatoes.
37:15Tomatoes.
37:15Tomatoes.
37:16Tomatoes.
37:19Tomatoes.
37:26Tomatoes.
37:38Tomatoes.
37:38Oh, my God.
37:40Oh, my God.
37:40Oh, my God.
37:40I wouldn't want to get on the bad side of you.
37:54It felt like a lovely lift after a really, like, mentally difficult day.
37:59Bon appétit.
38:02Merci beaucoup.
38:05Soup for the soul.
38:07I think they had a bit of a reset, and then our conversation was back to normal.
38:11We were back to the crack, they were back to, you know, buzzing.
38:16Wow.
38:18Wow.
38:19And she said, break the bone, she got a spanner, and I'm just like, wow.
38:23That a girl.
38:24That's how they do it in Cork, anyway.
38:26And, like, I have, like, a Nutribullet, and an air fryer, and a slow cooker, and a rice cooker, and,
38:31like, my food is shit.
38:33Fatty man, is this my car?
38:35Did I do this?
38:37I did this.
38:39This woman has, like, a terracotta pottery bowl, a spanner, and a dead goat, and it's delicious.
38:47It's really nice, isn't it?
38:48Yeah.
38:49All the veggies are divine in that cheesy thing.
38:54It's like a frittata.
38:56A frittata?
38:57Okay.
38:58Ray said a lot over the course of a few days.
39:02He's like, life gets very simple when you're doing these things.
39:06And it's true.
39:07You're like, oh my god, I'm just so happy.
39:10I love you.
39:11Come on.
39:12Come on.
39:12Come on.
39:14What did he say?
39:15He's a messer.
39:16He's having a laugh.
39:17He is a messer, isn't he?
39:18He's having a laugh.
39:19He is a messer, isn't he?
39:20Oh, yeah.
39:21100%.
39:22Yeah, yeah.
39:22Don't worry.
39:23We won't keep you up.
39:24And I was so angry walking into that house, and frustrated and fed up.
39:29And then just spending time with the fatty maz and the lads.
39:32And then I was like, all right, fine.
39:34This is amazing.
39:36Ooh.
39:42Ooh.
39:44Ooh.
39:45Ooh.
39:46Ooh.
39:47Ooh.
39:47Thank you so much.
39:48Thank you so much.
39:49Thank you so much.
39:50Thank you so much.
39:50Thank you so much.
39:52Thank you so much.
39:54For the final time, Ray, Kyla and Angela trek up into the Atlas Mountains.
40:02Oh, my God.
40:03My legs.
40:04Yeah, me too.
40:05So out of juice.
40:08We were walking toward the sky, basically.
40:11And at this point, too, I think we were physically exhausted, emotionally drained, and spiritually
40:17questioning our existence.
40:20Before Ray's final and toughest test, Angela and Kyla get a chance to put their newfound survival
40:27skills into practice.
40:29Tell me.
40:30I brought us a treat.
40:31Here we go.
40:32It's been weighing me down all day.
40:33And I've seen it on Instagram, and I've not tested it.
40:35Oh, the sardine.
40:37The toasted sardine.
40:38That guy.
40:38Oh, MG.
40:39I even brought cutlery.
40:41And the theory is, she says, that it basically goes on fire and cooks them, right?
40:46Yeah.
40:46Okay, let's go.
40:47Oh, God, I don't know about this now.
40:49I'm starting to get the heebie-jeebies.
40:50Do you want me to light on fire?
40:52Yeah, would you?
40:54Do you want me to hold?
40:56Where are you going?
40:57I'm going to bring it up to me to block the wind.
40:59It's lovely up here, isn't it?
41:01It is lovely.
41:02Sorry.
41:03How do you feel about the last day?
41:05Erm, I feel weirdly mixed emotions, you know.
41:09I feel a bit high.
41:10Put it back down.
41:11Put it back down.
41:11I am.
41:11I know what to do.
41:12Okay, sorry.
41:13She's so cranky.
41:17Erm, we've read each other quite well.
41:20Yeah, we have.
41:20Yeah, we have.
41:20Because this could be absolute nightmare.
41:23I'm so glad I got you.
41:24Me too.
41:25Genuinely.
41:26Yeah.
41:27I think it's class.
41:28Yeah, it's good.
41:28And you gave me a pair of knickers when I really needed them.
41:30Listen.
41:31Also, very different sizes.
41:33Same size Vag.
41:34Who knew?
41:34Great.
41:35Crazy.
41:36What size fits all?
41:38They're like, they're quite old ones.
41:40They were when I was pregnant.
41:44It was a beautiful kind of moment.
41:47We were outdoorsy gals now.
41:49You know, cooking sardines with a lighter.
41:56Oh yeah.
41:58Bon appetit bitches.
42:00Bon appetit.
42:01Let's taste them.
42:02Let's launch it.
42:02Alright now.
42:05It tastes like hot sardines.
42:07It's not bad.
42:08It's charred.
42:09It's like, there's a little bit of the barbecue about that.
42:11No, we are delusional.
42:13I'm actually really proud of us.
42:20I thought, like, they really fucked us yesterday, so I feel like today we might get a picnic.
42:25This is what we're building up to, okay?
42:27This is our finale here.
42:29You're going to be tested here.
42:31What I need you to do today, right, is just remember all the things you've beaten this week.
42:36Okay?
42:36Okay, Ray.
42:38We're going to be clipping on to steel all the time.
42:40Good.
42:41You're going to be hanging on to steel.
42:43Good.
42:43You have grips.
42:44You're going to love this one.
42:50The route to the top is a via ferrata.
42:53Steel cables and ladders fixed to the rock, leading up a near vertical, 400 meter cliff face.
43:01And then we got to the bottom of that thing, and everything in me was saying, you've hit your limit.
43:08You're actually fine.
43:09You can step up a little bit.
43:11Okay.
43:11That next one, yeah?
43:13Hang tight.
43:13Kyla, stop pulling at me, please.
43:15Sorry, sorry, sorry.
43:16Just relax there, yeah.
43:16Angela is not listening to debrief.
43:19She's in worry mode.
43:27And then am I going?
43:29Yeah, going.
43:29You ready, yeah?
43:30I'm stuck.
43:31Something's stuck.
43:32It becomes very intense very quickly.
43:34There's no, like, gentle start to it, and it is very intimidating.
43:39You see where Kyla is?
43:41I don't.
43:41I'm so sorry, but I really get fucked when I look up or down, so I can't, okay?
43:46I'm very much in my own little preservation zone until it's my turn.
43:53And it was just, your arsehole is in your mouth, like.
43:56And I was, like, shaking, you know that?
43:58Like, at times, I was, like, shaking.
44:02You're okay, babes.
44:03You're okay.
44:04Relax.
44:04Deep breaths.
44:04I'm okay, sorry, lass.
44:05She's killing it now.
44:06Fuck me.
44:10Like, I genuinely needed to focus on not losing my shit on the side of that mountain.
44:16And I'm gonna do the second one, okay?
44:17Just can't look.
44:18Don't look.
44:22Don't look.
44:23I'm comfortable enough with heights.
44:24I'm looking behind down at this world of fall below you.
44:27It's like looking out of a plane.
44:29That's how high you are.
44:30Go home.
44:36Every fibre of your body is telling you get off this mountain, you fool.
44:40What are you up to?
44:41But you keep going, like.
44:45just don't um take my silence for composure is all i would say
44:52like kyla definitely took the lead i think she read me and she knows me well enough to know that
44:59that silence meant fear that i couldn't express okay how did you do this one kyla so the leg
45:07closer to ray yeah move it as as much as you can towards your other foot yeah so i just
45:14knew i had
45:14to just take everything i learned over the last couple of days and stay strong and stay focused
45:19and not cry and just show up for my team you're absolutely fine okay i'm pulling the rope in case
45:24that feels yeah no you pull the steel you can pull all the metal okay good job angela okay
45:30you're doing great she sounded relaxed which really made me feel like okay
45:37this might be okay that was kind of amazing like i shat myself but it was great just for proof
45:44that
45:44there's no tears i told you it wasn't hard enough for him yeah fuck off don't you dare also sorry
45:50kyla
45:51is a great uh coach yeah i've never ever been so in the moment and all of my career all
45:57the stuff
45:58this is the most in the moment i've ever felt like i feel high
46:00what i loved about the via ferrata is we actually got into a flow as of unit
46:14are you ready to listen um yes i am thank you so much for saying that oh okay when you
46:21get through
46:21this is going to feel weird because you're walking but you're safe it just was such a reflection on
46:26the journey we had been on and not not in the bravery or like the heights or but like in
46:30the
46:30friendship to this one ray tell me if you need me to stall a little it was like oh my
46:36god this is
46:37a team i'm for some reason i'm stuck oh i got you i got you don't worry come to me
46:42a tiny bit
46:44hang on hang on there's one there you got it there there i think you realize how much trust we
46:51had handed to each other over a few days and how like open you have to be really
47:05i cried on walking up a hill on the first day because it was snowy
47:08and then i was fucking spider-man going up the mountain
47:14oh my god we did it is this is it yeah i forgot it
47:31oh my god oh my god
47:38here's to us and those like us what are we drinking we're drinking to us
47:42i couldn't say enough about the caliber of the two people
47:44but watching them just endure and get through that like you know the example for anybody
47:49male female it doesn't matter i just think it was it's an amazing thing for anyone to see
47:53what you can do when you really put your mind to it
47:57but that's so amazing this kind of experience will change how you think it'll change
48:01oh 100 how you deal with people when i'm out and about with the girls i'll often
48:10like squeeze their hands and that's like love you so i found myself holding hands at the top of a
48:16mountain with ray goggins knowing that kyla was on the other side and always like squeezing his little
48:21hand is actually really i don't know if he knows that that meant you're you're good
48:32i don't know when you do something so difficult with people and it's like just having that human
48:37experience and you know that it's like so unique and it's not probably going to happen again and
48:41it was like we did it to overcome your head and to stand up there knowing that you've kind of
48:51done something that not in your worst nightmare would you ever sign up to do
48:59i am i'm so proud of myself and at the beginning of this i was like i hope i get
49:04a bit braver and i crush that
49:30i'm so proud of my friends
49:34oh
49:36oh
49:37oh
49:38oh
49:38oh
