00:05it's about time you guys got here welcome to mojo plays and today we're pointing our fingers and
00:10saying shame resident evil popularized a lot of survival horror elements but some games are
00:15pretty obvious when they try to do their own version these are 10 games that stole from
00:20resident evil let's go before we continue we publish content all week long so be sure to
00:25subscribe and ring the bell to get notified of our latest videos countdown vampires
00:43countdown vampires is one of those games that perfectly fits the phrase so bad it's good
00:47released by bandai on the playstation it borrowed so heavily from resident evil that it sometimes
00:53feels less like inspiration and more like somebody changed the enemy textures five minutes before
00:57launch instead of zombies players fight vampires how clever though mechanically they behave almost
01:02identically to classic survival horror undead enemies the game does try a few strange ideas of its own
01:07including using tranquilizer darts and holy water to cure vampires instead of simply killing them
01:12outright there are also some fun secrets hidden away like a code that lets players control a vampire
01:17and an alternate mode unlocked by beating the game in under eight hours
01:25covert ops nuclear dawn
01:29covert ops nuclear dawn might lean far more into action than horror but its resident evil influence
01:34is impossible to miss the game uses fixed camera angles pre-rendered backgrounds tank controls
01:39and a deliberate pacing that feels straight out of the classic survival horror playbook
01:42instead of fighting monsters in a mansion players infiltrate a hijacked train to stop a terrorist threat
01:47giving the game a very different tone that feels closer to mission impossible than traditional
01:52horror honestly the train setting is a fantastic idea for the 90s action game because it creates
01:56tension naturally while still encouraging plenty of backtracking and exploration what really helps
02:01covert ops stand out is its espionage style puzzle sequences what makes it stand out more is it's just
02:07resident evil kind of really i'm so sorry
02:13blue stinger
02:25here's one of the most shameless resident evil clones ever made to the point where it somehow also
02:29manages to rip off dino crisis at the same time with its bizarre dinosaur heavy action plot
02:33blue stinger
02:34released for the dreamcast the game absolutely leans into survival horror trends of the late 90s
02:39complete with awkward combat strange pacing voice acting that sounds like every actor was recorded
02:44separately inside different rooms of the same collapsing buildings still for all of its weirdness
02:49blue stinger actually experimented with some genuinely forward-thinking ideas its fully rendered 3d
02:54environments were a major technical shift compared to the pre-rendered backgrounds used by many
02:59survival horror games at the time even if the environments looked rough the added freedom
03:03allowed for larger spaces more dynamic action and more experimental puzzle design honestly it's
03:09a complete mess but a strangely lovable one
03:11i didn't think i was gonna make it thank you what's happening on the island obscure okay i'll be
03:22right there
03:26hey what the where's my bag you know i do this list with peace and love because i love this
03:33game but
03:34even as a kid i just called it co-op resident evil released in 2004 the game follows a group
03:39of
03:39high school students who basically feel like a checklist of horror archetypes including the
03:43nerd the rebel the athlete and the stoner the clever part is that these stereotypes actually
03:48affect gameplay in meaningful ways each character has unique abilities that help with exploration
03:53puzzles or survival meaning players constantly swap between them to progress or in co-op use them
03:58individually the nerd can help solve puzzles while other characters can pick locks or force doors open it's a
04:03really smart mechanic that turns cheesy horror cliches into useful gameplay systems honestly obscure
04:09feels like a game that was released about 10 years before audiences were ready to fully appreciate it
04:22deep fear
04:27what what's going on april fools
04:31deep fear is one of the greatest survival horror games most people have never played largely because it
04:37suffered from the worst possible combination of bad timing and bad luck it was released on the sega
04:42satin near the very end of the console's lifespan which is bad when talking about the sega satin and
04:48it never even made it to north america which basically guaranteed it would disappear into obscurity
04:52at least for westerners that's a shame because the game genuinely had some fantastic ideas
04:57its underwater setting immediately helped it stand out from the other resident evil clones
05:01especially with oxygen management mechanics adding extra tension to exploration but what really made
05:06deep fear impressive was how fluid the gameplay felt compared to many survival horror games of that
05:12era combat and movement were faster and more responsive while the extra buttons on the sega satin's
05:17controller allowed actions to feel smoother overall still resident evil clone nonetheless
05:32tormented souls it's been two weeks since i received that letter from the wild burger hospital
05:38since then i haven't been fine from the fixed camera angles to creepy mansion like environments
05:43tormented souls absolutely captures the atmosphere of late 90s survival horror it also mixes in puzzle
05:48designs inspired by games like silent hill resulting in a strange but effective blend of tension
05:53exploration and complete architectural nonsense like the old capcom classics the game is filled with
05:58awkwardly placed healing items unsettling save rooms cryptic puzzles that no sane building owner
06:04would ever install and horrifying monsters lurking around corners waiting to ruin your day survival horror
06:09fans embraced it because it really felt like discovering some forgotten playstation
06:13era capcom project hidden away in a dusty basement for 20 years
06:24dame air 1998
06:34it's about time you guys got here this game has one of the most fitting origin stories imaginable for a
06:40survival horror game because it actually began as an unofficial fan remake of resident evil 2 before
06:45capcom shut the project down quicker than a naughty tab when your parents walk in instead of abandoning
06:51the idea entirely the developers transformed it into an original game although the resident evil influence
06:56remained incredibly obvious throughout the final product the inventory management the zombie encounters
07:00the over-the-shoulder combat the resource scarcity the overall tone all feel heavily inspired by
07:06modern resident evil games honestly you can practically picture the developers studying leon kennedy screenshots
07:12like sacred text during production the game even recreated some of the accidental charm of older
07:17survivor horror titles with awkward dialogue and delightfully clunky voice acting whether that was
07:23intentional or a budget we'll never know anybody god damn it
07:34hey baby it's me again martian gothic unification this is kenzo uji enigma mission log 9 12 am june 17
07:432019
07:44released during a period when people were starting to grow tired of resident evil style games
07:48martian gothic unification ended up getting overlooked despite having some genuinely fascinating ideas
07:54mainly because people were sick of the aesthetic the setup feels familiar at first a space station
07:59suddenly goes silent a team arrives to investigate and naturally everything has gone catastrophically
08:05wrong because horror protagonists fall into bad situations like a divorced kid in a soap opera
08:09what makes martian gothic stand out is its brutal focus on survival mechanics inventory space is
08:15extremely limited saving opportunities are restricted and many enemies cannot be permanently killed forcing
08:21players to carefully manage every resource they find door malfunction computer override required
08:37released on the dreamcast carrier arrived during a fascinating period where developers were
08:42experimenting with how survival horror could evolve beyond the pre-rendered style popularized by resident evil
08:47underneath the technical novelty carrier is actually a pretty solid horror experience on its own
08:53the game mixes sci-fi horror with a surprisingly complicated geopolitical storyline and features a more advanced
08:59targeting system that almost feels like a distant precursor to the strategic limb targeting combat later seen in dead space
09:05the rough edges are definitely still there because this is absolutely a dreamcast era game in every possible way
09:13but it remains another great example of how creatively weird survival horror became during that generation
09:24the ring terror's realm
09:38interestingly the ring terror's realm is not actually based on the famous film adaptation the ring
09:43instead the dreamcast exclusive game pulls more inspiration from koji suzuki's original japanese novel
09:49which already makes it a much stranger experience than many players probably expected going in it felt like
09:54we'd all rented the wrong game from blockbuster by accident rather than retelling the movie the game
09:59follows a cdc researcher investigating why her co-workers are mysteriously dying under bizarre
10:05circumstances from there things spiral into increasingly chaotic survival horror madness in ways that feel both
10:11fascinating and completely unhinged mechanically the game is very clearly trying to imitate the classic
10:16resident evil formula with fixed camera clanking controls and puzzle heavy exploration unfortunately
10:21it also inherits many of the rough technical issues common to low budget survival horror games of that era
10:27still its bizarre storyline gives it a weird charm that makes it oddly memorable today i love it
