00:01the summer show is your opportunity to help out someone who uh has a question and this is a pretty
00:08serious one i mean oftentimes it has to do with relationships or um you know like just something
00:15a dating work advice exactly but this time um this has to do with mental health okay so this
00:22person remains to uh or wishes to remain anonymous and uh they also don't want to give too many
00:30descriptions about their life so that anybody who knows them would recognize them okay so we're
00:37going to talk but you're going to get the whole gist all right so this person says dear andy
00:41summer show i'm reaching out because i'm undecided on whether or not i want to continue having
00:46a relationship with my parents i am an only child and i lost my other parent a few years ago
00:54so this parent is the only one i have left the problem is i know that my parent has mental
01:01health
01:01problems depression bipolar and i can tell when they skip doses by the way they treat me because
01:08of this i've gotten years biting my tongue and walking on eggshells well i'm married with children
01:13now and i worry about this behavior around my kids my oldest has even mentioned that she's afraid
01:19to visit her grandparent but can't seem to put into words what concerns her this is my only parent
01:26and i'm torn should i continue to keep a relationship with this parent and limit their contact with my
01:31kids or do i completely cut this parent out from all parts of mine and my children's lives wow yeah
01:38this is heavy it really is thanks for your help love you love your show well thank you um anonymous
01:46and i'm sorry that you're going through this i can't even imagine having to deal with this yeah it's
01:53got to be really tough because i can understand that you love your parent and you want what's best for
01:58them and you want to keep them in your life but i mean your job as a mom is to
02:03protect those kiddos
02:05right and it sounds like it sounds like she is concerned enough that it might be a dangerous
02:13situation for her kids okay yeah right so if that's the case then i say i think that you need
02:19to have a
02:19conversation with your parent and say here's what's going to happen i notice when you're off your meds
02:26and that can't happen so until you pull it together i'm protecting my kids from this i 100
02:34agree yeah you have to have the conversation because mental health problems you know you you
02:42you can't not treat them you cannot skip doses plus when they lost their significant other so that
02:50could also just be that's heavy in its own so you don't want to leave that person just completely
02:56like exactly you don't want to bail because i know how that would feel with my dad yeah um but
03:03you're
03:03right you have to have the conversation because when it comes down to it you are the parent you are
03:09the protector and you have to protect your kids now say to them just like you said it's either you
03:15you
03:15straighten out yeah or you know and we can still have a relationship but you won't have a relationship
03:21with my kids yeah that's tough that is tough so hard that is tough maybe you found yourself in a
03:26similar situation where you had to cut ties with someone maybe it wasn't even your parent but because
03:30of it of an issue involving your kids right where you knew that you had to protect your kids these
03:35are
03:36the stories that we want to hear from you this morning what should this person do or assuming that it
03:41is a woman um who's who's just having a tough time as a mom and a daughter stuck in the
03:46middle yeah
03:48that's hard it's hard this is a heavy one
