00:00The United States has proposed new tariffs targeting goods from 60 countries over what it says are failures to combat
00:08forced labour in global supply chains.
00:10The duties would range from 10 to 12.5% and will now go through a public comment period before
00:18any final decision is made.
00:20Their proposal includes exemptions for certain goods such as beef, coffee, fruit and nuts.
00:26Products from Canada and Mexico that comply with the North American Free Trade Agreement would also be exempt, along with
00:33select apparel and textiles.
00:35The move follows previous U.S. investigations into whether trading partners are doing enough to prevent goods made using forced
00:43labour from entering American markets.
00:45The U.S. Trade Representative has said 54 countries fail to put in place effective bans on forced labour imports,
00:52including China, Taiwan, Vietnam and the U.K.
00:56Six other economies, including Canada, the European Union, Indonesia, Ecuador, Mexico and Pakistan, were found to have inadequately enforced their
