Hot Ones - Season 30 Episode 4 - TBA … While Eating Spicy Wings
Transcript
00:05That's what I'm talking about.
00:13Hey, what's going on, everybody?
00:14For First We Feast, I'm Sean Evans.
00:16You're watching Hot Ones, and today we deliver you a very special Hot Ones reunion brought
00:21to you by Jack in the Box, who we've partnered with to create a munchie meal made for a Spice
00:25Lord.
00:26And I'm thrilled to welcome back to the studio, J Balvin.
00:30He's a Grammy Award-nominated singer-songwriter and one of the most decorated musicians on
00:33the planet, a distinguished former Hot Ones guest, and he also has a brand-new collaborative
00:37album, Omerta, alongside Ryan Castro.
00:40Check it out, but first things first, another go-round with the wings of death.
00:44J Balvin, welcome back to the show.
00:45Oh, thank you, man.
00:46So we not only have new sauces on the table for you to try, but you'll also be one of
00:51the
00:51first to try our brand-new Jack in the Box Hot Ones munchie meals.
00:54Okay.
00:55Are you ready to get started?
00:56Absolutely.
01:20Now that we've kicked things off, we're going to try our Hot Ones Buffalo Chicken Tater
01:24Melt, which is made with Hot Ones Buffalo sauce.
01:28Oh, this is great.
01:31What?
01:32Oh, my God.
01:38That's how you started off, baby.
01:40What?
01:41Oh, my God.
01:43Plenty more where that came from.
01:45Okay.
01:45No, but this is great.
01:46This is like a croissant.
01:47Mm-hmm.
01:48Wow.
01:49A little kick there at the end?
01:50Yeah.
01:51I need to take some of them.
01:54So it's great to see you in the studio.
01:56We did that remote episode together some five years ago.
02:00And, you know, my favorite part was almost when the interview ended.
02:03Yes.
02:04You gave Da Bomb Beyond Insanity to your friend Andres.
02:07Breathe.
02:08Breathe.
02:09Bro.
02:10He almost went to the hospital.
02:12He looked like it.
02:13No, no lie, man.
02:15He was like, how you say hyperventilating?
02:17I don't know how you say it.
02:18He's like.
02:20But I'm happy that he's back on his feet and made it to the shoot today.
02:23We might bring him again.
02:24He's got to do an encore performance.
02:27Yes.
02:27I'm sure he's watching this in a green room somewhere.
02:30He's starting to sweat already.
02:31Andres, I swear to God, you're going to come here.
02:35And then, has the meme of you calling Da Bomb toxic, you know, the, this is toxic, bro.
02:41Did that ever make it to you?
02:42Like, do fans ever bring up your Hot Ones appearance in the wild?
02:45Yes.
02:46Yes.
02:47Like, how you did it.
02:48You know, it's.
02:50And I'm just saying, I just loved it, man.
02:52But I think the company also helps a lot, man.
02:54So, thank you, Sean.
02:55All right.
02:56So, up next, we have a hot bergine here.
02:59So, that'll be the first wing that you try.
03:05Mmm.
03:06Delicious.
03:10Yeah.
03:11Do you have a most treasured memory from the seven-hour show that you did in your hometown of Medellin
03:17last November,
03:18which included more than 80 songs and 40,000 flowers handed out to fans as they entered the stadium.
03:24You tell me it was seven hours, and I just got tired.
03:27Jesus Christ.
03:28I don't know how I did it.
03:29Well, the memory is, of course, like, I just wanted to give back to my people.
03:34That's the reason why it took, like, kind of like two marathons and a half.
03:38And I was ready mentally, but not physically.
03:43I didn't know what it's been on the show seven hours nonstop, because it's not that, like, I just stay
03:50quiet.
03:50You know, I'm moving, and I'm singing, and I'm jumping, and I'm performing, and I'm sharing with the people.
03:54So, I mean, the memory was beautiful, absolutely, but it was one where I was fainting, you know,
04:02because I didn't have enough sugar in my body and no fat.
04:06So the doctors came to me, and they gave me, like, a bowl of ice cream.
04:10That's kind of like what we do on our show when guests start to faint.
04:13But mine was just to get my sugar, you know, back on track.
04:18The fact that it was home, beautiful, but the other one is, like, how much I love my people,
04:22that I'm, like, if I have to die on the stage, which would be legendary, but I didn't want to.
04:29A warrior going out on a shield.
04:30Yeah, I was like, I was like, man, I have to do it.
04:34So for sauce number three, we have the Hot One Sriracha Curly Fry Burger,
04:38which is made with Hot One Sriracha sauce.
04:40Let's bring them on out and give them a try.
04:44This looks good.
04:45A little jalapeno on there.
04:47Oh, my God.
04:50Oh, I need this home.
04:51It hits.
04:53This is so amazing, bro.
04:56Another one that I'm taking home.
04:58Put it in the to-go bag.
04:59Yep.
05:00We're stacking them up today.
05:01So you've performed on some of the biggest stages from headlining Coachella to the Super Bowl halftime show.
05:07Is there a reaction from the audience that unlocks another gear in you?
05:12Like, what's your favorite kind of energy to see reflected back at you when you're out on stage?
05:17You know, I think the first time that we did the Super Bowl together with Bad Bunny, Shakira, and J
05:21-Lo,
05:22that kind of, like, made me feel that we were really on the right track.
05:28And now they see, you know, Bad Bunny just did his own Super Bowl.
05:32It's just like, I'm just celebrating what's happened with our culture in general.
05:37So I think all the love that we're getting back is we're getting back.
05:42It's not that I'm getting it back.
05:43The fact that people are more open to listen to different sounds and engaged,
05:49that our music is just unstoppable.
05:52It's undeniable that we have one of the major impact in the world right now in the Spanish music.
05:59But I said Latino music.
06:07This is beautiful.
06:09You're just enjoying the meal so far.
06:11It is beautiful.
06:12It's art.
06:13It's the Mona Lisa right there.
06:14So far.
06:15We're going to turn it into a Pollock here by the end.
06:18So far, so good.
06:20So your album Colores, each song was a different color.
06:24When you're making a song like Azul, for example, what makes a song sound blue?
06:28Like, how does a blue song sound different from like a red song or a yellow song?
06:33I mean, that's so subjective.
06:35You know, it's just like, what is blue for you might be red for me.
06:38I just close my eyes and I just let it.
06:42It might sound romantic, but I just let my soul connect with the color.
06:45You know, I'm just like, this is blue.
06:48Don't ask me why.
06:50It just feels blue.
06:52And it was such a successful project, man,
06:54because it was kind of random that you call every song by color.
07:00I give a lot of credit to myself on that one.
07:02It's different.
07:03Yeah.
07:03And you seem like a vibes person in the studio creatively.
07:07You know, I was reading another interview where you're talking about the song Bruce Wayne
07:10and how, like, you dimmed the lights in the studio and had the New York skyline reflecting in.
07:15Oh, that was Batman, man.
07:18Let me think about it.
07:19I become Batman right here.
07:21We are in New York City.
07:22We are in Gotham.
07:23Come on.
07:23We can be Spider-Man.
07:24We can be Batman.
07:25We can be whatever you want.
07:26Ninja Turtle.
07:28All right, if you're ready, we can move on to the halfway mark.
07:35And for Sauce No. 5, we have a very special guest, Ryan Castro.
07:41Come on out.
07:42We had you eating Sauce No. 5, which was going to be a pickling and scorpion,
07:47but it seems like J Balvin's got other ideas.
07:50He's opened to bomb Beyond Insanity.
07:53Nothing, brother.
07:53You're a gangster.
07:54You said, we just did an album, by the way.
07:56He's called the artist from the ghetto.
07:59You know, he comes from the ghettos of Colombia.
08:02He started, he created a huge movement.
08:05I love him as a person, of course.
08:06That's the reason why we're working together.
08:08So he's called, you know, like, the king of the ghetto.
08:12So, you know, if you're acting like you're the top guy and, you know, you're like,
08:17you got everything under control, I just want to see his reaction.
08:20So he's going to try.
08:21You went through the music industry the hard way, and now you're doing hot ones the hard way.
08:24But I'm going to say it in Spanish, so that everyone understands me.
08:28If you're the ghetto, you don't have to see anything, even if I don't like the chicken.
08:31I know.
08:35Delicious.
08:36That's what I'm talking about.
08:38Yeah.
08:38I like it.
08:41Okay.
08:42I'm waiting.
08:43I'm good.
08:49How's the ghetto?
08:50I'm good.
08:50Ghetto.
08:51Good boy.
08:52So everyone talks about chemistry in music.
08:56As if it's automatic.
08:58But I'm wondering, what does chemistry actually look like in the studio when it really starts clicking?
09:03Like, is there a different kind of vibe in the room?
09:05It's like this.
09:07Bro, we're going to the studio to have fun.
09:10You know, it's a certain moment.
09:13Can I talk?
09:14It's a certain moment in life where you get so...
09:19Into the game.
09:22That you go to the studio, that you're like,
09:24Oh, I'm going to do this song, and I don't know, it's going to have so many strings.
09:28And that's when you get lost in the game.
09:32So now we're back.
09:33That's when we started.
09:34Like, we're just doing this for us.
09:37If you vibe with it, if you love it, that's great.
09:40If you don't, well, we did our best.
09:43Well, thank you for sharing.
09:44And Ryan, great job here coming on to the Hot Ones set.
09:48I'm quiet, bro.
09:48I'm quiet.
09:49Before you go, do you have any advice for J Balvin as he takes on the back half of the
09:53Hot Ones?
09:54I'm going to give you a tip, because I'm going to the middle of the show.
09:57There are the little ralitas.
09:58No, this is a burraco.
10:01The real gangsta.
10:04I love you, G.
10:05Omerta, stay here.
10:06I'm going to wait for you.
10:07All right, if you're ready, we can move on here to sauce number six.
10:10This is tropical amarillo.
10:11Oh, that sounds good.
10:12Mm-hmm.
10:19This is so tropical.
10:22Yeah, I feel like in the Amazonas.
10:24Coast of Columbia.
10:26So you've described Metallica as being in your life since childhood.
10:30You fell in love when you heard the first guitar riff.
10:33Oh, man.
10:33What is it about Metallica that blew your mind as a kid?
10:36Like, why do they rule?
10:38That was the first band that I heard, actually.
10:44I was just mind-blowing.
10:46The fact that they had instrumentals, you know, like Orion and all this stuff, I'm like, it was mind-blowing
10:52to me that, how?
10:55I was like, who does that now?
10:58Who takes those risks and who is so confident to just do an instrumental?
11:04So the reason why I'm doing music, when I started doing music, is because I fell in love with Metallica
11:10and also with Nirvana and Kurt Cobain.
11:11So I start guitar classes and I start a band.
11:16I wasn't the singer, but I was playing the guitar.
11:19So shout out to Jess Hitfield, the whole crew.
11:23All right.
11:24We are six wings down.
11:25If you're ready, we can move on here to sauce number seven.
11:28Of course.
11:28This one is called Eight Dragon.
11:30Ooh, now the names are getting better.
11:41It's a good, it's like a roller coaster.
11:44I like that.
11:45This one is fun.
11:47We're flying now, baby.
11:49Oh, now, now, now.
11:50I feel the wind.
11:51Now I feel a little rush.
11:54No water yet.
11:55I see that.
11:56No milk.
11:57I see that.
11:58Holding strong.
11:59Yes, of course.
11:59So your music is full of aspirational imagery, but we all know that the foundation was a 1997 Volkswagen Golf
12:08that you nicknamed Ryo.
12:09Yeah.
12:10What was so special about that 90s hatchback that it later inspired a Grammy-nominated album by the same name?
12:16You know, I remember my dad doing all the sacrifice because we don't come from a wealthy family.
12:21And my dad, with all his sacrifice, working and working just to get me a car because he knew I
12:27wanted to be around with my music and going to different shows in bars or high schools or universities and
12:35all this stuff.
12:36In a poetic way, I think me and Ryo paved the way in a certain way for what's happening with
12:44the reggaeton in Colombia.
12:47How would you describe the car culture in Medellin?
12:50Like, how is it different from, say, Miami or Los Angeles?
12:54Yeah.
12:54Well, you know, Colombia used to be a third world country, so there wasn't a lot of money there.
13:02You know, of course, it was rich people.
13:04But in general, it was really weird to see a Ferrari or a Lamborghini or, you know, whatever this type
13:11of cars.
13:11Cars always were so important in people's dreams.
13:19You know, it's kind of like a little medal that you get when you're working.
13:24And it's so beautiful when people buy the first car.
13:26It's like, yeah, I got my first car.
13:27And I never forget when I have the first time, you know, my car and Ryo, you know, that's his
13:32name.
13:33So many beautiful memories, you know.
13:35You know, rejections, which is beautiful, too, because that's what makes you stronger, you know.
13:41And doing all this journey with me, it was beautiful.
13:46And then you've collected lots of medals along the way.
13:48I'm curious, between the LaFerrari, the F40.
13:53Oh, you know your shit.
13:54And the 512 Testarossa.
13:56Okay.
13:56Which has the best pure driving experience?
14:00It's hard, man, because honestly, they're not comfortable.
14:03Right, yeah.
14:04A lot of us.
14:05They're not.
14:05Like, I remember the first time I drove with LaFerrari, and you just have to be pressing the brake all
14:11the time.
14:12If you don't put the brake, the car starts moving.
14:15So you don't have peace to be with your wife and talking about life.
14:18You're like, and you feel all the rocks, because I have them in Colombia.
14:24So like little rocks, because it's too low, you're driving and you're feeling every single one.
14:31Yes.
14:31But of those, LaFerrari was a little bit more, it was more comfortable.
14:35It had more technology than the F40 and than the Testarossa.
14:38If you're ready, we can move on to Da Bomb Beyond Insanity.
14:42Okay.
14:43It's the one.
14:44Yeah, there you go.
14:45Now you go.
14:45Shout out to Ryan Castro.
14:46Look how a ghetto, the guy who's not from the ghetto handle this shit.
14:54Yeah, there you go.
15:04That's what I'm talking about.
15:05Out of reach.
15:12Control the breathe.
15:14Stay calm, stay zen.
15:16Last one was a roller coaster.
15:18This one, we're floating.
15:19This one, it's special.
15:23Yeah.
15:24It's a good way of putting it.
15:26All right.
15:27J Balvin, you once said that fashion is your biggest passion on the same level as music.
15:31So while you battled Da Bomb, what I'm hoping we can do as a style retrospective, I've pulled
15:36some iconic red carpet.
15:37I've pulled some iconic red carpet.
15:39Are you okay?
15:40I got the hiccups.
15:44We pulled some of your most iconic looks.
15:46We'll pull them up on the monitor.
15:47I'm just hoping I can get a backstory, okay?
15:49Okay.
15:50Can you tell me about the look for your Made in Medellin concert?
15:53Is there anything different about styling a show for your hometown?
15:55Of course.
15:56Every...
15:59Every...
16:00Every...
16:01What up, Ryan?
16:04Can you stop laughing?
16:06We've got to concentrate.
16:07Yeah.
16:10This look...
16:10Then be careful around the eyes.
16:11Just be careful.
16:12Oh, yeah.
16:12You're right.
16:13This look...
16:13Be careful.
16:14This look was the intro of the Primavera of the tour in Colombia, the stadium tour that
16:25we're doing.
16:26And I love it.
16:27It was a beautiful aesthetic.
16:30And I have a lot of coins in my head.
16:32If you can see, the thing was kind of shaky on the town.
16:36All right.
16:36Up next, you told Louis Vuitton colors are energy and vibration.
16:40What is maximum vibration?
16:42Like, how would you describe it?
16:43I mean, that's...
16:43Is this maximum vibration?
16:45Look at me now.
16:46That's like...
16:47That's like the bomb.
16:50That's like...
16:51That's a storm and a hurricane and...
16:55And this sauce that I have right here on me.
16:57All wrapped into one.
16:59I don't...
16:59I have too much...
17:01So much personality to rock that thing, boy.
17:03How would you describe the aesthetic appeal of Vetements?
17:06Like, what role did that brand play in your style evolution?
17:09I love Vetements.
17:10I have a lot of respect for the designer for Graham and Kirill, which are part of the Vetements brand.
17:17I love the aesthetic.
17:18I love the cuts.
17:21I'm kind of a jacket guy.
17:22Do you think I could pull one off?
17:24Of course.
17:25Absolutely.
17:26I know that you wouldn't say it if you didn't mean it.
17:28Because you just do an all-black, you know, biker jacket.
17:31There's no way you go wrong with that.
17:33All right.
17:33Up next, what can you tell me about the holographic jumpsuit that was in your performance for the 2018 Latin
17:39Grammys?
17:40I think that was cool.
17:42I forgot about that one.
17:42But I think that's really...
17:44I've always been so focused on creating and changing the narrative of how they used to see us as Latinos
17:50when it was on performing.
17:54But not performing, because there's a lot of great performers all the life.
17:58Way better than me, of course.
18:00A hundred times.
18:01But on the fact of, like...
18:04How it kind of went from, like, an Ed Hardy, kind of, like, bedazzled kind of look, and then you're
18:09in, like, St. Laurent, and kind of bringing in, like, a designer house kind of vibe to it.
18:12Yes.
18:13Yeah, I like that.
18:14We love always to create a world every time we do a show.
18:19And this is a world.
18:20Yeah.
18:20All right.
18:22We are on to sauce number nine.
18:23We passed the bomb, man.
18:24We got past the bomb.
18:25Unfortunately, once one storm clears out, another one rolls in on this show.
18:30That's life.
18:31That is life, if you're ready.
18:32Yeah, of course I'm ready.
18:39I'm good.
18:40I'm good.
18:42So, I was reading a recent Oat Living interview where you talked about how horror movies are, like, a stress
18:48reliever for you, and you watch them to go to sleep.
18:51Yes.
18:52What distinguishes...
18:54Am I weird?
18:55No, that's not weird at all.
18:57I watch horror movies at night quite a bit, too, by myself.
19:00It kind of elevates the whole experience for me, you know?
19:03The more scary the place it feels, the better.
19:07Because when I was a kid, I was really scared of the dark.
19:12Super scared, because I used to watch scary movies when I was a kid.
19:16And when I grew up, I was like, you know what, I've got to face my fear.
19:19Like, I love this, but I'm not enjoying the result after.
19:24And it took me time, and then it's like the most, it's like my meditation time.
19:30Because all of them are based on true stories.
19:34So, yeah, I don't see, like, Hellraiser and those, that's, like, fiction.
19:41I like the things that happen here in New Jersey, in Newark.
19:46You like a conjuring.
19:47The conjuring, exactly.
19:48Things that you can go and see the house and be like, this happens a couple of years ago.
19:53All right.
19:54And UFOs, too.
19:55I believe in them.
19:57They're among us.
19:59We might be one of them.
20:00But you're not afraid.
20:01You'll face it.
20:02I think I know how to handle them.
20:03We're going to send you first as our ambassador, should that ever happen, all right?
20:08Representing us humans.
20:09You're the reggaeton ambassador.

21:10And the last time you were on the show, you taught me hasta la chimba.
21:14To describe the experience of eating da bomb.
21:16Yeah.
21:17I'm wondering, is there another Spanish phrase or piece of Colombian slang you could teach me
21:22that best describes what the experience of eating hot ones is like?
21:26It's muy hue puta.
21:28Muy hue puta?
21:30It's like, it's muy hue puta.
21:33Muy.
21:33It's not an easy task, man.
21:35It's just not.
21:36Muy hue puta.

22:40When you were on the show last time as your cameo, you were hiccuping.

23:17Is it worse than you remember?
23:18It's kind of a shame.
23:23How come you can do an interview on this situation?
23:26I can't even think.
