The One Show - Season Episode 101
Transcript
00:11Hello and welcome to your Thursday One Show live on BBC One and I play with Vernon Kaye.
00:17And of course Lauren Laverne. Lots to look forward to in the next half hour.
00:21From famous family history to plenty of home renovation tips.
00:24Plus a heartwarming one big thank you from a pop megastar.
00:29Oh yes it's a goodie. Very shortly you will see the moment former One Direction singer Zayn Malik surprises 13
00:35year old Lily from Waltham Abbey whose determination to help other children has inspired everyone around her.
00:41Yeah stay tuned for that. That's coming up in just a moment.
00:43And joining us on the sofa tonight is presenter and EastEnders favourite Joe Swash who's been looking into his family
00:49history for the brand new series of Who Do You Think You Are.
00:52He's going to be revealing while his search took him to the hills of southern Italy to discover if a
00:58long-told family legend of being connected to the mafia Joe Swash was actually true.
01:03Not sure how scary the mafia would be if it was populated with people a bit like Joe Swash.
01:08What?
01:10More on that very soon. Also here is architect George Clark who will be telling us about his latest renovation
01:16series where he's helping families across the UK transform their kitchens and gardens into beautiful functional homes.
01:23Yeah and later in the show we'll be catching up with actor and star of BBC comedy Daddy Issues David
01:29Finn as he follows in the footsteps of Michael Keaton's ghoulish character Beetlejuice as it's in the West End for
01:36the very first time.
01:37Oh exciting and of course we love hearing from you.
01:39If you've got a home renovation question for George or a comment about anything on tonight's show get in touch
01:44on WhatsApp 0330 123 1700.
01:48Of course we're also on socials and email.
01:50Yeah it's going to be a fun one tonight. First up though we're going to kick off with our one
01:55big thank you as we mentioned.
01:57This week we're calling on the help of singer and former One Direction star Zayn Malik to surprise 13 year
02:02old Lily from Waltham Abbey.
02:04Yes at the age of just seven Lily began taking on epic physical challenges to raise money for children in
02:09her local community.
02:11Here's her dad Adam to tell us a bit more.
02:17Lily deserves this one big thank you because how hard she works, how determined she is and all the effort
02:22she's put in to raise money for other children.
02:2513 year old Lily was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and autism as a toddler.
02:30Her family were told she might never walk.
02:32As a parent it's incredibly emotional and hard but she's been so determined to walk unaided.
02:39Because of all the support that she was that she received when she was younger she wanted to be able
02:43to show support for other children.
02:45When Lily was seven she heard about the work of a local children's hospice which supports families of children with
02:51terminal diagnoses.
02:52She decided she wanted to raise money for them.
02:55Lily hasn't just raised significant funds for Haven House.
02:58She's also been a great role model and inspiration to the children we care for and the families.
03:06She started by doing a 15k walk.
03:08The next one was 20k and then the last one we done was Climbout Snowden.
03:13Without fundraisers like Lily we truly wouldn't be able to sustain our services.
03:17And when Lily heard that her friend Ariana was sick she stepped up again.
03:21Ariana had been offered ground breaking treatment on a new trial in the US.
03:26Lily helped me raise a lot of money to help me go to America to get treatment that I couldn't
03:32get here.
03:33In total Lily raised over 77,000 for the hospice and an extra 10,000 pounds for Ariana.
03:40Lily's amazing, funny, determined little girl who never gives up.
03:44I'm so proud of Lily because of how much money she's raised and how far she's come.
03:47She deserves all of the gratitude and appreciation for everything that she has done.
03:53If I had a message for Lily it would be, thank you so much, you really helped me.
04:03Oh Lily, she is an absolute superstar.
04:06So we thought it was only right to call on another superstar who she happens to adore to give her
04:11a day she'll never forget.
04:17Today we're on the banks of the River Thames at Kingston.
04:20To help surprise Lily, we've brought in someone we know she's a huge fan of.
04:25Record-breaking, multi-award winning, global phenomenon, Zayn Malik.
04:30So when the one show told me all about Lily and all the money she's been raising for the hospices
04:35over the years,
04:35it was something I was incredibly passionate about getting involved with.
04:39Lily's been told she's heading to the Crowne Plaza Hotel for an interview about her fundraising.
04:45But what Lily doesn't know is I'm actually waiting nearby.
04:48Or that we've also gathered her family to surprise her.
04:51Lily will be brought to a room rigged with hidden cameras to wait while she thinks the interview space is
04:57being prepared.
04:57So Lily's just going to be in here, and I'm going to be in here watching on the screens with
05:02all of her family.
05:03And then when the time's right, I'm going to go next door and surprise her.
05:09With Zayn and her family safely out of sight, Lily arrives with her mum, Kelly, who's in on the surprise.
05:15They're taken to the waiting room by some of our team.
05:18Right, do you want to take a seat? I'll pop this microphone on you.
05:22Lily thinks this is a waiting room for people who are being interviewed in the hotel today.
05:28I will come and grab you guys in, like, ten minutes when I'm ready.
05:32But she hasn't a clue who's next door and waiting to come in.
05:36So Lily's right here on this screen, and this is her family behind me.
05:40So how proud are you of Lily?
05:42I'm extremely proud of how far she's gone.
05:45Nice.
05:45She'll be excited, yeah?
05:47She'll be excited, 100% she will.
05:49Lily and her mum are still sitting patiently.
05:51Yeah, I'm going to say I'm here to do an interview for you now.
05:54So, do you think I should go and head in, go see her?
05:57Yes.
06:01Zayn strolls in and casually takes a seat next to Lily, who can't contain her excitement.
06:08What's going on? How you doing?
06:10Good, how are you?
06:11What are you doing here?
06:12I'm going to do an interview for Haven House.
06:15Yeah, I've got an interview too. That's why I'm here. That's mad, isn't it?
06:18Why are they interviewing you?
06:19Um, because I've done lots of charity work for them.
06:22That's mad, isn't it? What kind of charity work have you been doing?
06:24To raise money for children, like, done Mount Snowden, I done a 20k charity walk,
06:29and then one of my dad's friends, little girls, had cancer, so I done 10k for her.
06:33You've done that yourself, yeah?
06:35Yeah.
06:36That's insane. It was nice to meet you.
06:38Now that Zayn's put Lily at her ease, he's coming clean.
06:42I actually was telling you, little fib, um, I'm not here to do an interview.
06:45Uh, I was sent by The One Show to give you one big thank you.
06:50I want to give you a hug.
06:52You should be very proud of yourself.
06:55Yeah.
06:56I'm not actually just here by myself. All your family's in the room next door, too.
07:06And the surprises aren't over.
07:08So we've got this little video to show you, Lily, and, uh, people have sent you some messages.
07:13Hiya, Lily. Wow. A surprise appearance from the great Zayn Malik.
07:18How amazing was that? And you clearly deserve it.
07:21What an incredible amount of money you've raised.
07:23From everyone here at The One Show, we want to say you are a superstar.
07:28Lily, we are forever proud of you, and we love you beyond words.
07:32Love you, Lily.
07:33I just wanted to say how proud I am of you.
07:36You honestly amaze me every day.
07:38We can do what we do here, supporting seriously your children and their families, without people like you.
07:43Lily, I just wanted to say how proud I am of you.
07:47You've accomplished every challenge you've set yourself, and you're an inspiration to everyone.
07:52Well done, Lily.
07:58And Zayn has one more surprise for her.
08:01A special invitation to one of his gigs.
08:04And he's a VIP ticket for the R2.
08:06Thank you so much.
08:11I've got no more.
08:16Yeah!
08:18What a great moment.
08:20What a great moment.
08:21And we know Lily had a great time at the concert as well.
08:24Bravo.
08:25Of course she did.
08:26And thank you so much to Zayn for taking the time to help spring that surprise.
08:29He's very busy at the minute with his new album, Conical, that's just out.
08:32And since filming, he's also very generously matched the funds that Lily raised for Haven House Children's Hospice with a
08:39donation of £77.000.
08:41What a dude.
08:43Come on, gang.
08:44Thank you, Zayn.
08:46Oh, that's very, very kind.
08:48If you know someone remarkable like Lily who's gone above and beyond, and you'd like that person, well, you'd like
08:54to thank that person, all you've got to do is get in touch on the email.
08:56It's one big thank you at bbc.co.uk.
08:59And please tell us all about them.
09:01Can't wait to hear.
09:02Now, time to introduce tonight's guests.
09:04Please welcome architect George Clarke and presenter Joe Swash.
09:08Yes, Joe Swash.
09:11I'm going to clap for them.
09:12Welcome to you both.
09:14Are you all right?
09:15We've got the men in black here on the sofa.
09:16I missed the memo on that.
09:17We've got the memo.
09:18We've got the memo.
09:19We saw Zayn on the VT and we thought, you know what, it's time we started a band.
09:24We're the man band.
09:25There you go.
09:26You've got the same trousers on as well.
09:28What's going on?
09:29It's because you're very stylish, George.
09:30But listen, George, we've got something else in common that I've got to bring up.
09:34It has been this big week for football.
09:36Obviously, Crystal Palace took home the first European trophy last night and pick up our home city, George.
09:41The mighty Sunland.
09:43Celebrate in Europe.
09:44So, yeah, for the first time in 50 years and Radio 1's big weekend.
09:4853 years was the last time we played in Europe.
09:51It's the best football I've ever seen us play.
09:54The fact that we just needed to survive relegation was enough for me this year.
09:58To finish above Newcastle was even better.
10:00And then get in Europe.
10:02I was like, come on.
10:03You were in the thick of the action, weren't you?
10:04I was right in the thick of it.
10:05It was one of the best days of my life.
10:07All right.
10:07Well, I'm going to say congratulations to Bolton Wanderers.
10:12Can I say, well done, Arsenal.
10:14And the Ganners.
10:15You've got Bolton Wanderers from League One to the championships.
10:18Anyway, let's crack on.
10:19George, it isn't.
10:20You aren't the only one who's gone back to their roots.
10:23Because, Joe, you have started to uncover, you've been on a mission to uncover your family history.
10:28On who do you think you are?
10:29Yeah.
10:29Yeah.
10:30It's been an amazing journey.
10:32I'm sort of at the age where I'm really interested in my family history.
10:37As a youngster, I didn't really care.
10:39But as I've grown older, I've got this real first for it.
10:42So, they took me on this journey.
10:43And it was just the most amazing journey.
10:45I'm so pleased I've done it.
10:48And there was a special reason for you, wasn't there, that you wanted to take part in this new series?
10:52Yeah.
10:52I lost my dad when I was 11.
10:54So, to be able to follow my dad's side of the family, it felt like I was almost doing it
10:59in his footsteps.
11:00So, it was a really nice way of connecting, again, with my dad's family and finding out about their history.
11:05And they've got such a great history.
11:07We found some amazing things out.
11:09Oh, absolutely.
11:09There is a fact, or there is a point, that you don't know, or you didn't know that much about
11:14that side of your family.
11:16Yeah.
11:16And that there was a rumour amongst family members that there might have been a connection with the criminal underworld.
11:21Yeah.
11:21There's always rumours in there.
11:23So, my little nanny Franny, she told me that we were related to Tarmac Adam, who invented Tarmac.
11:28Yeah.
11:29Hasn't been proven.
11:30It was never proven.
11:32The jury's still out on that one.
11:33I love that.
11:34And then, on the other side, there was always rumours, because it's Italians, that there was some sort of, like,
11:38mafiosa connection.
11:40But, you know, as people tell the stories throughout generations, they leave bits out.
11:43They don't want to find out.
11:44So, are you connected to the mafia?
11:47No.
11:47Sort of.
11:48Sort of.
11:49Sort of, but sort of not.
11:51Yeah.
11:51It's along the story.
11:52Well, if it was, he's not going to tell you.
11:53That's true, actually.
11:54You've got to watch it on the night.
11:55It's on the night.
11:56No spoilers.
11:56No spoilers.
11:57But you do start.
11:58I've seen your episode.
12:00It's fantastic.
12:01You actually start with your great, great granddad.
12:03That's Giuseppe.
12:04Yeah.
12:04So, he wasn't a naughty boy.
12:06He was on the right side of history.
12:07Yeah.
12:08So, Giuseppe.
12:08And with suffragette Sylvia Pankhurst.
12:10Yeah.
12:11So, we uncovered that.
12:12My great, great granddad, Giuseppe, who come over, who was the original family member that come over from Italy,
12:17he come over because Mussolini and the black shirts were sort of taken over.
12:21It was the first sort of fascism group that was sort of getting momentum.
12:25And when he moved over to England to little Italy, Mussolini started sending the black shirts over to try and
12:31get the young English-Italians to talk Italian and sort of do their thing.
12:35How good is your Italian?
12:36Oui, oui, well, not very good.
12:39But my granddad, oui, oui, bella.
12:41Sorry.
12:42Oui, we, bella.
12:43That's your phrase.
12:44I love that.
12:45But my...
12:46Oui, oui, bella.
12:47Oui, we, bella.
12:47Oui, bella.
12:49It's Italian, Werner.
12:51We'll knock it up.
12:51No, oui, we, bella from Mattel.
12:53Sorry, man, carry on.
12:53Carry on.
12:54It ended up, my great-great-granddad, Giuseppe, he stood up against Mussolini in the black shirts.
12:59He saw the perils of fascism and obviously what happened in the future.
13:03But he was on stage talking with Sylvia Pankhurst.
13:06So he had a really amazing connection.
13:08And I've got little girls, so to be able to tell my girls that, you know, your great-great-granddad
13:12had something to do with the Pankhurst sisters is amazing.
13:15And I started this journey really hoping that there was a story because, you know, you always have that fear
13:20that nothing happened.
13:21And when I was on this journey, it was like watching three films unfold and all sort of relate to
13:28the same family.
13:29It was incredible.
13:30Yeah.
13:30And very emotional at times.
13:32Let's have a little look at this moment.
13:33Joe discovers that his relatives' powerful words were found written in Sylvia Pankhurst's newspaper.
13:39Oui, oui, bella.
13:41We must abolish the greed of gain and unite in serving our neighbours.
13:46When we do that, armies will no longer exist.
13:49There shall be no bloodshed.
13:52Joy and happiness shall be supreme and humanity will be flowers of spring.
13:57I think it's beautiful.
13:59I mean, I'm a little bit more emotional than I thought I would ever be about my relatives.
14:04I thought I could detach myself, but there's something quite touching about reading something that...
14:14So it's profoundly moving, I think.
14:17It's beautiful.
14:18It really is.
14:20Joe, you and I have worked together quite a few times.
14:22Yeah.
14:22And we've had some emotional moments.
14:23Yeah.
14:24But that in particular looked really emotional.
14:27Why was that?
14:27I just think the whole journey was emotional for me because, you know, I lost my dad at such a
14:31young age.
14:32And I sort of lost a little bit of connection to my dad's family.
14:38So to be able to do this, knowing that my dad would have loved it, I was almost...
14:41My dad was doing it through my eyes, you know.
14:44So it was an honour that they asked me to do it initially.
14:47But just to be able to go back with this sort of, like, depth of history that I can show
14:52my kids and my sisters
14:53and it was a real...
14:55It was a great way of reattaching, reconnecting with my dad's history, which I felt like I'd lost over the
15:00years.
15:01And another thing you discovered was that Giuseppe was a little bit of a performer.
15:05Giuseppe was a performer.
15:06He played, like, the street piano.
15:07What a surprise.
15:08What a surprise.
15:09He played the organ, you know, the street piano.
15:12Yeah.
15:12So he started off doing that and then he started tuning them and he worked his way up to playing
15:16pianos
15:16and going into people's houses at the time, which was, like, a real thing for people's houses.
15:21So he worked his way up and then his son, he had Eddie Ramo, then took a completely different turn
15:27and then it gets a little bit underwheldy.
15:30A little bit dark.
15:31A little bit dark, a bit sinister.
15:32And we can't really talk about it because it's seven o'clock.
15:34So you'll have to watch it at nine o'clock.
15:36It's a cracking watch.
15:38George, apparently we've got a relative of yours to thank for sparking your interest in architecture, though.
15:43Yeah, my granddad.
15:45Sunderland builder.
15:47Kind of a grafter.
15:48You know, he had hands like shovels.
15:49Yeah.
15:50He always wanted me to get a trade in building.
15:52He was like being an electrician, be a joiner, you know, be a bricklayer.
15:56He was really disappointed when I became an architect.
15:58It was a bit too posh for him.
16:00No, I'm joking.
16:01He was really proud.
16:02But yeah, from, so I lost my dad when I was seven, when I was very, very young.
16:06So my granddad became a kind of mentor for me, really.
16:09He was like a father figure as well as a grandfather figure.
16:12But yeah, just him being on building sites.
16:14He used to take me on building sites when I was like seven, eight years old before health and safety
16:18really kicked in.
16:19And you couldn't do it now.
16:20You're not allowed to do it.
16:21But back then I was sitting in big bulldozers and diggers with them on school holidays and stuff.
16:26It was fantastic.
16:27So when other kids were playing with Tonka toys, I was in the real thing.
16:31I don't think you realise how much your history has such a play in who you are.
16:36I didn't really, I could detach myself from it.
16:38But you really are who you come from, you know?
16:41Yeah.
16:42And I think it's interesting because you said you'd never thought about it when you were younger.
16:45And I think when you get, when we get a little bit older, not much.
16:48Not as old as you.
16:49Thanks.
16:51I'm only joking, Jules.
16:52You look great, by the way.
16:54Wee wee, Bella, Bella.
16:55Ciao, Bella, Bella.
16:57Yes!
16:58Wee wee, Bella.
16:59You start to look back and I think it's, I try to kind of re-craft you a little bit.
17:05Just having that little bit of history and knowing a little bit more and a little bit more storytelling.
17:11I mean, you've seen this like three films at the same time.
17:14And you being part of that, that's quite magical, I think.
17:16Well, it is, it really is.
17:17It's a brilliant watch.
17:18The new series of Who Do You Think You Are continues next Tuesday at 9 on BBC One and iPlayer.
17:22If you're in Wales, it'll be on Thursday and Jules' episode is the week after next.
17:26Yeah, perfect.
17:27Still to come, Jules will be sharing some of his favourite home improvement tips
17:30and revealing the latest design trends, including appliance garages.
17:36I've got one.
17:36Have you really?
17:37Yeah.
17:37Well, apparently we all need one.
17:38Yeah.
17:39But time now to head to the West End, where a new musical is taken to the UK stage for
17:44the very first time.
17:45It's called Chow Chow Bella and it describes...
17:49For a minute, I've been over my head.
17:51That sounds good, doesn't it?
17:52Beetlejuice is back.
17:54And taking on the iconic character is actor David Finn,
17:59who's preparing for the role of a lifetime in more ways than one.
18:05Beetlejuice.
18:07Beetlejuice.
18:09Beetlejuice.
18:11The 1988 cult film Beetlejuice turned a mischievous demon from the afterlife, played by Michael
18:18Keaton, into a cinematic icon.
18:21It's a life-affirming story about a lonely teen who finds friendships in the most unexpected
18:27places.
18:28It's showtime.
18:30Since then, it's become a smash-hit musical on Broadway, and now it's debuting in London's West End.
18:40Stepping into the title role is actor David Finn, star of BBC comedy series Daddy Issues.
18:47It feels like a huge moment, certainly in terms of theatre, the biggest thing I've ever done.
18:55Whilst David is taking a major role on stage, at home, he's preparing for an even bigger job, becoming a
19:02dad.
19:02I've got a midwife appointment this week.
19:04What day?
19:06Er, Thursday.
19:08After multiple rounds of IVF, David and his wife Lauren started a podcast sharing their pregnancy journey.
19:14We've been trying for a baby for a couple of years, navigating the IVF system, navigating
19:20the whole fertility minefield, and realised that not a lot of people were talking about
19:25it, and we wanted to.
19:27You end up saying things that you didn't realise you were feeling or thinking, and it can be
19:31quite, kind of, yeah, therapeutic for us as a couple.
19:33Very public therapy.
19:35Their baby is due in October.
19:37I just think you're going to be a wonderful mother.
19:39I just feel like it's just something we won't, for a second, take for granted.
19:44No.
19:45Because it has been so tough.
19:48And we are ready.
19:50And you feel like having to save the doctors.
19:52This isn't a regular pregnancy, just so you know.
19:54Yeah.
19:54We're old and we've earned this.
19:58Back at the day job.
19:59So we're about to go from the very top of the show.
20:03Watch this.
20:05Rehearsals are in the final stages.
20:07Now we're never going to see him.
20:11Audiences can look forward to sort of, like, this devilishly delightful performance from
20:15David.
20:16It's been a dream working with him.
20:18We use the phrase in theatre, a triple threat, which means you're a strong singer, actor,
20:22and dancer.
20:23And Beetlejuice is sort of a quadruple threat, because he also needs to be, like, a brilliant
20:27comedian.
20:27Hey, folks.
20:29Begging your pardon.
20:30I cover every inch of the stage, and I'm wearing not just a suit, but I'm also wearing an
20:36overcoat on top of that.
20:37And then I'm wearing a cloak on top of that as well.
20:40And I'm full of props for the following scenes.
20:43So I'm like a kind of a Sherpa, a theatre Sherpa.
20:46Fix it here.
20:47Wrong arm, wrong arm, wrong arm, wrong arm, wrong arm.
20:49I am older, but I'm glad I waited.
20:52So you've got all the silliness and all the colour, but then there's real heart to it
20:56as well.
21:03With just days before curtain up at Prince Edward Theatre, David's ready for his transformation.
21:09This is the place where I try and get over my nerves every day.
21:13This is what I'm supposed to look like, although the face looks nothing like me, but yeah, that's
21:18what I'll end up looking like.
21:19This is all my makeup.
21:21My wife.
21:22Some bits of costume over here.
21:25The stripes.
21:27For the final dress rehearsal, David will perform for the first time in front of a select audience.
21:35It's showtime!
21:36Whee!
21:38See you out there.
21:44There's a giant snake here!
21:49It's all very surreal because I feel like it's the two biggest things that have maybe happened
21:53in my life, one career-wise and one in my personal life, happening at the same time.
21:58And I don't think there's anything that could have prepared me for that.
22:02I think I'm ready for both of them.
22:03God, I hope you're ready for a show about death!
22:09Oh, look at that.
22:10So much luck to the whole cast.
22:12And of course, we're wishing David and his wife, Lauren, all the very best with that new
22:16baby.
22:16You can see Beetlejuice at the Prince Edward Theatre in London until April next year.
22:22Yeah.
22:22Time now to put on your high-vis vest and your hard heart because George here is back with
22:26a brand-new series of beautiful builds.
22:28The renovation show which sees him help families transform bricks and mortar into their dream
22:33homes.
22:34Let's take a look.
22:34In this series, I'm going to be working with homeowners up and down the country.
22:39I'm just walking past...
22:41Guys!
22:42...designing schemes to help them completely remodel their ground floor.
22:47For this house!
22:49The house is just a Victoria sponge at the moment and you've got to make it into a red velvet.
22:55There's my brief right there!
22:57And I'll be calling on garden designer Luke Millard to create stunning outdoor rooms.
23:03As we turn completely dysfunctional spaces into beautiful ones.
23:10Oh!
23:12Every single person in the studio went, oh, that looks beautiful.
23:16That looks beautiful.
23:17But things like that are actually totally accessible.
23:19George?
23:20Massively.
23:21I mean, good design for me is about someone just sitting there with a pen, like what I'm
23:25doing, going, right, can you do that, can you do that, can you do that.
23:28Understanding how someone lives, that's really important, because we're all different.
23:31We might all live in a different way at home, you know, a different amount of kids.
23:35Some people might work at home, some people might not.
23:38So the challenge for me is to get to know people really, really quickly and then sit with
23:43the existing house plan and go, right, that doesn't work, that doesn't work, that doesn't
23:46work.
23:46In episode one, we meet Mitch and Elliot.
23:49Mitch and Elliot, yeah.
23:49Who, whilst they're away on their honeymoon, they had an absolute disaster at home.
23:53Yeah, the house flooded.
23:54Oh!
23:54That wasn't my fault, by the way, we hadn't started work by then, but yeah, they'd just
23:58bought this house, they'd gone away, burst pipe, entire place flooded, so when I turned
24:03up it was just miserable, stinking and damp and everything, so yeah, they moved out for
24:09a little bit, but then we turned it into that, which is pretty amazing really, and it was
24:13completely knackered when we started.
24:14That looks like a shore home.
24:15It does, I mean, we're seeing the beautiful afters here, obviously, but this show does
24:19highlight the challenges of renovating your house.
24:22What are some of the biggest perils and pitfalls that you've seen over the years?
24:25Living on site is the worst thing ever.
24:28which they did.
24:29I mean, you've got dust everywhere, all the time.
24:33They were washing their knives and forks and plates in the bath, and this is awful, I don't
24:39know if you've got the clip, actually, but I think Elliot says, there's nothing worse
24:42than getting in the bath, and there's a bit of bolognese in there.
24:45LAUGHTER
24:48Not good at all.
24:50We'll bash you in here again, Joel.
24:51You're lucky you're just one of those.
24:52I was waiting for it.
24:54I was waiting for it.
24:55But yeah, living on site.
24:56There's so many jokes that we're not going to go anywhere near.
24:59Yeah, definitely not.
25:00You also highlight some of the major trends that are going on in design in this series
25:04as well.
25:05Just give us an idea of what's becoming popular.
25:08Well, connecting house with gardens is a big deal.
25:10I'm not a gardener, but I'm always, when I'm sketching a scheme out, I'll be like, how
25:14can you link to the outside?
25:16I always like to think of your garden as being an outside room without a roof, if that makes
25:21sense, or an extension of your home without a roof.
25:23So you're kind of designing those garden spaces to feel like individual rooms, mini extensions,
25:29which is great.
25:31Yeah, appliance garages, they're trendy these days in kitchens.
25:34Do you know what that is?
25:35No.
25:35Imagine like a really, really mini garage with a little shutter on it in your kitchen,
25:39and when you open it up, there's an air fryer in there.
25:42Or you're toast or you're a coffee machine.
25:44I'm sold on air fryer.
25:46Sign me up.
25:48No, something, loads of people now in their kitchen want the appliance garages.
25:51Is it hiding it behind something?
25:53Yeah, basically.
25:53I mean, the doors can either slide and fall back, or you might have a shutter on there.
25:57But all of your appliance clutter is just tucked out of the way.
26:00I mean, George, we've got you on this week, and I have to ask you about your tips for
26:04keeping cool, keeping houses cool.
26:06Because a lot of homes in the UK, they're not built with these kind of temperatures in
26:09mind, are they?
26:10Yeah, it's interesting, isn't it, with global warming, because we always talk about keeping
26:13our homes warmer and saving on our energy bills.
26:16And then you get a week like this week, and it's unbelievable.
26:19It's like unbearable, to be honest.
26:22Insulation's really good, which might sound a bit weird.
26:24So insulation keeps your house warm during the winter, but it can keep it cool in summer.
26:28So it sort of keeps the heat out.
26:29It keeps the heat out.
26:30It's like a flask.
26:31If you think of it with a flask, you put a hot drink, and it stays hot for eight hours.
26:33If you put a cold drink, and it stays cold for eight hours, so it keeps the heat out.
26:37And minimise the amount of glazing on your house.
26:39I know we always go, yeah, we love glass, and we want loads of light, we want the views.
26:44But like too much glass these days, it's like living in a greenhouse.
26:47But the solar shading on the outside always helps as well.
26:50Nice.
26:50And you're all about open plan.
26:52Yeah.
26:52Is there any room, any space, does anyone's house know, for separate rooms?
26:56There is.
26:57I mean, you say I love open plan.
26:58I do.
26:59So kitchen dining, obviously.
27:01Yeah.
27:01Kitchen dining, a little bit of living is a good thing.
27:04But I think these days we don't want like a trendy warehouse from the 1990s.
27:08You need a little snug, didn't you?
27:09You need a little snug.
27:10Yeah.
27:10A little separate snug just tucked out of the way.
27:12So they've come back into fashion, basically.
27:14I mean, they've never really gone out of fashion.
27:16But in the 90s, it was all about full open plan living, kitchen dining living.
27:20And you were driving for mad.
27:22It was too noisy.
27:23Yeah.
27:23Yeah, fair enough.
27:24There you go.
27:24And Joe, you and Stacey, no strangers to home improvement.
27:27Have you got a snug?
27:28You've got a little...
27:29I'd love to.
27:30I'd love a snug.
27:31I've got six kids.
27:32A little snug would be absolutely brilliant.
27:34No, Stacey very much does...
27:36If he wants a snug, he goes to the next county.
27:39Yeah.
27:40No, Stacey does all the DIY.
27:42I'd love to get involved, but I've got ADHD,
27:45so I don't think ADHD and DIY go together.
27:48So I start something and then it never gets finished.
27:51So, yeah, I stay...
27:52I know what I'm good at, George.
27:53And that is not...
27:54Italian, speaking Italian.
27:56Oui, oui, bella, bella.
27:57Oui, oui, bella.
27:58George's new series, Beautiful Bills,

28:50It was great.
