00:00:00Three teams, seven weeks, $100,000 renovations, and one winner.
00:00:15Are you ready?
00:00:18Second place is the first loser.
00:00:20I'm here to take my team to the top of the podium, baby.
00:00:25This is a real battle with real properties.
00:00:28And unfortunately, it's going to damage real egos.
00:00:32I know what the judges want, and $50,000 is on the line, and we have to deliver.
00:00:40We handpicked you as our three teams because we saw your work and your commitment.
00:00:46Are you kidding me?
00:00:47This is a mother-daughter team in overalls from Nebraska.
00:00:51They're ready to prove something to the world.
00:00:53We do hear you.
00:00:55We do hear you.
00:00:55Oh, good.
00:00:55You do hear me.
00:00:56And sometimes we follow through with it, and sometimes it's a lot.
00:00:59For Angelina and Steven, this is more than a game.
00:01:03They're parents of four kids.
00:01:05They want to use this money to buy their first home.
00:01:07They have a lot of talent.
00:01:08They have a lot of grit, and this would change their life.
00:01:11We're going to win this week.
00:01:13Optimism.
00:01:13I love it.
00:01:15Anna and Josiah have something that I consider priceless, which is called youth.
00:01:22They run rental properties, so they're not rookies in this game.
00:01:25And I think they're going to outwork the other two teams.
00:01:28Wow.
00:01:29I want it.
00:01:29You've got to want the win!
00:01:35Everything's ugly.
00:01:37Something might be broken.
00:01:38That's three different floors.
00:01:41I'm stressed about time and money.
00:01:45Oh, this is fun.
00:01:46What?
00:01:47I love this.
00:01:51Oh!
00:01:52Hmm.
00:01:53This is interesting.
00:01:56This opportunity is definitely going to change our lives personally.
00:02:01One in a million.
00:02:02Babe!
00:02:03Kind of busy right now.
00:02:05This needs to be handled, like, today.
00:02:09See, we are so different on our thoughts.
00:02:12I need to take five.
00:02:13Uh-oh.
00:02:14I don't really see how we're supposed to get this whole house done.
00:02:17Like, not humanly possible.
00:02:20And the winner of Battle on the Beach is...
00:02:42We are back!
00:02:44New Beach.
00:02:46New mentors.
00:02:48New teams.
00:02:50Same old time.
00:02:52I'm excited to work with a mother and daughter team.
00:02:55And hopefully they work really well together.
00:02:57This is my daughter, Sydney.
00:02:58This is my mom, Michelle.
00:03:00And we're from Nebraska.
00:03:01Yep.
00:03:02From the middle of nowhere, Nebraska.
00:03:05Her husband wouldn't come with her.
00:03:07That's why I'm here.
00:03:10My husband came home with the toilet on the front porch when we first got married because
00:03:14we couldn't afford to have somebody do it for us, so we just had to learn how to do it
00:03:17ourselves.
00:03:18But we've probably done, I don't know, between 20 and 30 houses.
00:03:21I am a DIY content creator.
00:03:25My husband and I have renovated six houses.
00:03:27At the beginning, my mom helped us with a few of the first ones, and then we've kind of jumped
00:03:31out of her nest and been able to do it on our own.
00:03:34I will confess, I am a little hard-headed, but she is a younger version of me.
00:03:43Trail.
00:03:46So you guys know me as Mika from 100 Day Dream Home, or perhaps winner of Rock the Block and
00:03:52Barbie Dream House Challenge.
00:03:53I am going to be the perfect mentor for my team because I know how to listen, but also to
00:03:58keep it real and candid if something is not going to help them win.
00:04:07I'm Anna.
00:04:08Or no, I'm going to say I'm Anna.
00:04:09No, you're not.
00:04:10That's a pretty good blooper.
00:04:12Go!
00:04:12All right.
00:04:12I'm...
00:04:13My name's Josiah.
00:04:15I'm Anna from Baltimore, Maryland.
00:04:17So we have one kid, Lena, our daughter.
00:04:19She's one and a half years old.
00:04:20We got into renovation when we got married.
00:04:23He moved into a house that had no kitchen.
00:04:25I had just finished the bathroom, and he was honestly not on board with the whole renovation
00:04:30thing, but we looked at the resale value, and he was like, oh.
00:04:33We can make money in this.
00:04:35We've been working with each other in our business for six years.
00:04:38At the beginning of our relationship, Anna had a lot of skills that were beyond what I
00:04:42could do.
00:04:42You were able to teach me a lot of things.
00:04:44We're on the same playing field now.
00:04:46We're going to win!
00:04:52I'm Sarah Baumler, and I'm used to being a judge, but this year I'm changing sides, and
00:04:58I'm becoming a mentor.
00:04:59I'm very competitive.
00:05:00I want to win, but I also understand this is about my team.
00:05:04So I'm hoping to take all of that information from years of experience here on the beach
00:05:08and hopefully bring my team to a win.
00:05:12I'm Steven Jacobs.
00:05:14This is my wife, Angelina Jacobs.
00:05:15We're from Waterbury, Connecticut.
00:05:17And I've been doing construction for about seven years now, and my husband joined with
00:05:22me about two years ago.
00:05:24Most of the work that I learned was on my own and self-taught.
00:05:28People told me, no, you're too pretty to do construction.
00:05:31You're too beautiful to do construction.
00:05:32No, I like construction, and I'm going to keep doing this until my fingers are all off,
00:05:36and then I'm going to glue them back on.
00:05:42Welcome to Battle on the Beach.
00:05:46We are smack dab in the center of a beautiful 60-mile span of coastal beach called the Grand
00:05:53Strand.
00:05:54This is Garden City, South Carolina.
00:05:59We hand-picked you as our three teams because we saw your work and your commitment.
00:06:05In other words, we believe in you.
00:06:08But this isn't going to be a walk on the beach.
00:06:10You'll need to bring your design and renovation A-game every day if you want a chance at winning
00:06:16the $50,000 prize.
00:06:18Let's talk about the competition.
00:06:21This area attracts 20 million visitors annually, so we're focusing on those vacationers this
00:06:27time around.
00:06:28We're working with three vacation homes that are in need of a major glow-up.
00:06:33These are the biggest houses we've ever featured on Battle on the Beach.
00:06:37Two of the houses have near identical layouts, but the third house is a little bit smaller.
00:06:41The average weekly rental rates of these homes fall in the range of $1,900 to $2,800.
00:06:50Similar size houses in this area, they can usually run up to $7,000 during high season.
00:06:56And high season is right around the corner.
00:07:00Each week, you will be assigned an area in the house to renovate.
00:07:03Each team will have $100,000 to put towards their designs and only seven weeks to renovate.
00:07:12How you want to spend your money is completely up to you.
00:07:16And at the end of each week, the team who increases the rental rate of their space the
00:07:21most will win $3,000.
00:07:25At the end of your seven-week build, with the help of local experts, the judges will determine
00:07:31which team increased the overall rental rate.
00:07:35And the winner will walk away with the $50,000 grand prize.
00:07:41What would $50,000 mean to each of you?
00:07:45We're going to finish our house because it is unlivable right now.
00:07:49Good call.
00:07:49That's a good plan.
00:07:50Angelina and Steven, we're going to hopefully buy our first house because we actually never
00:07:54had one.
00:07:55I like that plan.
00:07:57That's good motivation.
00:07:58And Sydney and Michelle.
00:07:59We want to start a business together, flipping houses.
00:08:02These are great.
00:08:03Yeah, these are great calls.
00:08:05So are you ready to find out your house assignments?
00:08:08Yes!
00:08:09Woo-hoo!
00:08:10Well, the competition starts before you really even get to the houses.
00:08:16Your first head-to-head challenge is all about getting to know your location and home.
00:08:22You'll be competing in a race to collect three battle flags.
00:08:26Each flag will have a clue leading you to the next location.
00:08:29You will tour each house along your journey.
00:08:31The first team to hit all the destinations and return here will be given the chance to
00:08:38choose their own house and assign the others.
00:08:42Woo-hoo!
00:08:43Yeah!
00:08:44That is big.
00:08:45That's a big.
00:08:46How much time you spend in each vacation home is entirely up to you.
00:08:50But choose wisely.
00:08:51Take too long and you might lose your pick.
00:08:53Rush through and you could win without knowing which home is best.
00:08:58So here's your first clue.
00:09:02Thank you.
00:09:03Oh, yeah.
00:09:03Here you go.
00:09:04You guys can open them once you get in your bikes.
00:09:07Okay.
00:09:08You guys ready?
00:09:09Yeah!
00:09:11Three, two, one, go!
00:09:17Come on, guys!
00:09:18Come on!
00:09:19Go!
00:09:20Go!
00:09:22Here you go.
00:09:23Here you go.
00:09:23Read it, read it, read it.
00:09:24Open it.
00:09:2533A is where the challenge begins.
00:09:28Go.
00:09:28Left.
00:09:29Left.
00:09:30Woo!
00:09:30Ah!
00:09:32Safety is number one priority.
00:09:34We can do it.
00:09:35Hustle, hustle, hustle, hustle.
00:09:39212, 216, right here.
00:09:40Put it in the park.
00:09:42Run up.
00:09:42Having the first pick of the house is such an advantage, and we need that advantage.
00:09:47Okay.
00:09:48Oh, my gosh.
00:09:49All right.
00:09:50Okay.
00:09:51Five bedrooms, five baths.
00:09:53Look around, too.
00:09:55Do not use.
00:09:56What the heck is going on with that fireplace?
00:09:59Ugh.
00:09:59It stinks like mold.
00:10:02Having five bedrooms and five baths, it has a great footprint.
00:10:05We don't have to really add any more bathrooms to that space.
00:10:09This is nice.
00:10:11There's an upstairs.
00:10:12Oh, my God.
00:10:15Flags.
00:10:16Look under the bed.
00:10:17You look under the bed, I look under the mess.
00:10:19This is nice.
00:10:20The vaulted ceiling.
00:10:23Tiny bathroom.
00:10:25These are flags.
00:10:26Grab it.
00:10:27Wait, did you find the next clue?
00:10:29Get ready to pedal two doors down.
00:10:31Right there.
00:10:32Chee!
00:10:34Big.
00:10:37Whoa.
00:10:38It's weird that you walk into the...
00:10:39Right to the kitchen.
00:10:40Especially at the beach, you want to walk into kind of a mudroom.
00:10:43Instead of, like, walking into a kitchen, getting sand in your food, that's not a fun experience.
00:10:48Five, five.
00:10:50Having five bathrooms, I think, is a big plus.
00:10:52You probably wouldn't even need to add one because there's enough in the house.
00:10:55Which would save us so much money.
00:10:56It's big and open, which is nice.
00:10:58I love all the windows.
00:10:59But a really good view.
00:11:01Let me have your own little pier.
00:11:02It's nice there's a bedroom on the first floor.
00:11:04Carpet.
00:11:05What's under the carpet?
00:11:06The three bedroom and baths upstairs have plenty of space.
00:11:09Okay.
00:11:10Let's go.
00:11:11All right, we're not spending that much time here.
00:11:13Oh, there's a flag.
00:11:14Oh!
00:11:18Nice.
00:11:20Three.
00:11:20Congratulations, it worked out.
00:11:23Did we find a ranch?
00:11:24Are your legs burning?
00:11:25We're here.
00:11:27Honey, we're home.
00:11:28Uh-oh.
00:11:29I like this.
00:11:30That's a fireplace.
00:11:30I like the windows.
00:11:32Five beds, three beds.
00:11:33Five beds?
00:11:35There's a lot of beds, but the kitchen is tiny.
00:11:40Ugly bathrooms.
00:11:42House three is small, but it does have some nice features.
00:11:45I had a lot of windows already there that were already facing the beach and a fireplace.
00:11:49Look up there.
00:11:50Ugh.
00:11:53Okay, flag.
00:11:55Looking in bed.
00:11:57Pictures on the deck.
00:11:59Got the flag.
00:12:04Uh-oh, they're coming in.
00:12:05Go, go, go.
00:12:07Hey!
00:12:09How's it going?
00:12:12Five bedrooms, three bathrooms.
00:12:142143 is the square footage.
00:12:16We were on a time limit, and we had to hurry up.
00:12:18We tried to be strategic.
00:12:19Come on.
00:12:20I got one more.
00:12:22Oh, God.
00:12:23No.
00:12:24No.
00:12:26Word.
00:12:27Weird that you come into the kitchen again.
00:12:28Five, five again, two.
00:12:30So the next house over is basically identical to the first house.
00:12:33So we're not really paying attention.
00:12:35We just run through it and try to get first place in the challenge.
00:12:38I don't do stairs.
00:12:39I don't either.
00:12:40Oh, gosh.
00:12:42We do not want this one.
00:12:43No character.
00:12:44There's zero character.
00:12:44Everything's ugly.
00:12:46Sorry, homeowners.
00:12:48I don't like this one.
00:12:50I don't either.
00:12:52No!
00:12:53What's this up?
00:12:54What was that?
00:12:55Are they coming here?
00:12:56Don't hit our competition.
00:12:58We're trying to sabotage us.
00:13:00Mom!
00:13:01What?
00:13:02When she's tired, directions go out the window.
00:13:05Oh, my gosh.
00:13:07Come on.
00:13:09Oh, I like this one.
00:13:11I got the flag.
00:13:14Where's the elevators in these suckers?
00:13:17We're here, honey.
00:13:18It's identical.
00:13:19Can we already look at this one?
00:13:23Okay.
00:13:24So we walk into house three.
00:13:25This is the worst house.
00:13:27We don't want this one.
00:13:28There's not a lot of space you could, like, take away and out of that.
00:13:31Last one, last one.
00:13:33There's maybe one person in front of us.
00:13:35We just got passive.
00:13:36Okay, we're good.
00:13:38No way!
00:13:38Sorry, thanks.
00:13:39Your steering really drew us.
00:13:42Sorry, my bad.
00:13:43We're spinning.
00:13:45Get on the road.
00:13:46Get on the road.
00:13:47Little mishap.
00:13:49Come on.
00:13:51Hustle, hustle, hustle, hustle.
00:13:52My legs are climbing.
00:13:54Bring it right here, right?
00:13:55Stop.
00:13:55Go, go.
00:13:56No!
00:13:58We turn into the little parking lot, and we see another bike.
00:14:04We're here.
00:14:05We're here.
00:14:05Are we the last?
00:14:06It feels like we're at the Olympics right now.
00:14:08Let's go!
00:14:09That is amazing.
00:14:14Come on, Hustle, let's go!
00:14:17Let's go!
00:14:17Wow!
00:14:18Woo!
00:14:19Here they come!
00:14:21That is amazing, huh?
00:14:23Yes!
00:14:24Yes!
00:14:25Yes!
00:14:25Yes!
00:14:25You did it!
00:14:26Yeah!
00:14:27Me and my wife are competitive, so once we put that pedal to the metal, literally, I knew it
00:14:32was throw time.
00:14:33We won, and we get what we want, and they get what they get, and they can't get upset.
00:14:38Woo!
00:14:39Woo!
00:14:40Oh, man!
00:14:41Woo!
00:14:41Woo!
00:14:42This competition was a big deal, because this is like, we're choosing our house for the
00:14:45rest of the competition.
00:14:46It was pretty devastating, because we didn't want to give that power to another team.
00:14:50Oh, here comes the next team!
00:14:52It's not pretty!
00:14:53It's not pretty!
00:14:53But we made it!
00:14:55Woo!
00:14:55Woo!
00:14:56It should've worked out, but you made it!
00:14:59Yeah!
00:14:59Athleticism is not our strength!
00:15:01Yeah!
00:15:01Can't win them all!
00:15:02So, that's right.
00:15:03We're gonna win every other one.
00:15:04The houses suck.
00:15:06They do.
00:15:06Sorry.
00:15:07Yeah.
00:15:08What you thinking?
00:15:09Well, don't you want to know over there!
00:15:13The house we went overall, we were probably tied with the first two.
00:15:17They were quite similar.
00:15:18Mm-hmm.
00:15:18Basically identical.
00:15:19The rooms were pretty big, and the bathrooms were decently big, so overall, we just really
00:15:24liked either one of those houses.
00:15:26We really didn't want the third house.
00:15:28House number three is small, and there's only three bathrooms.
00:15:31But it does have the lowest rental rate, meaning we can raise it the most.
00:15:35I hope they don't give us the bad house.
00:15:37They are all in need of a lot.
00:15:40Is there any property that has the ability where you can have two primary bedrooms that
00:15:43will both have a private on-suite, because then you can rent it to two families.
00:15:47That was number two.
00:15:47Right?
00:15:48In the five bedrooms, five bathrooms.
00:15:50There's two five bedrooms, five bathrooms.
00:15:52There's one, five, and three.
00:15:53That's the last one.
00:15:54Yep.
00:15:54The last one is smaller.
00:15:55Going into house two, I was just like, yeah, there was two check marks on there.
00:15:59It had the space, it had the nice footprints, and it had the view that you cannot put into
00:16:04a house.
00:16:04As far as the first house, I did like the way that the layout was, because house one and two
00:16:09are very similar, but house one had a fireplace that said do not use.
00:16:13And we already have a tight budget, so I'm not trying to have to fix or replace that.
00:16:20The last house was nice, though.
00:16:21The only downfall is you're dealing with a small, confined space, and I feel like they're
00:16:25going to definitely have to add some bathrooms in order to add value.
00:16:28And with the time, I'm not sure if they're going to be able to do that.
00:16:31It's time for Team Sarah to make their decision.
00:16:36So which house will it be?
00:16:38For our house?
00:16:43We're going to go with house number two.
00:16:45Number two?
00:16:46Yes.
00:16:47Honestly, the footprint of it is already there.
00:16:50The view is already there.
00:16:51And with five bedrooms and five baths, we can possibly give our house like two separate primary suites.
00:16:59So, dare I ask, what do you choose for Team Mika?
00:17:11We're going to go with house number three.
00:17:15Okay.
00:17:17We do feel bummed that we got house number three because it might be the worst one.
00:17:23But because house three had the lowest weekly rental value, we think that we might be able to raise it
00:17:28the most.
00:17:29So, I guess Team Ty is getting house number one.
00:17:33One, yes.
00:17:35So, we're number one.
00:17:36So, we know house number one is not that great.
00:17:39They say you can't fix ugly, but you can fix ugly houses.
00:17:44Now, with your beach homes decided, we get into the first battle.
00:17:48We are kicking off the competition with a gathering place for vacationers to come together.
00:17:54Yes.
00:17:55And the room with the best views in the house, the living room.
00:17:59This will include the entryway and the stairs.
00:18:02Oh, shoot.
00:18:03High traffic areas mean even higher stakes and we're starting off swinging.
00:18:08I hope you're ready because battle on the beach begins now.
00:18:14All right, guys. Let's get it.
00:18:18Let's just get it out of here.
00:18:20This is awesome.
00:18:24No.
00:18:26It is broken.
00:18:28Yikes.
00:18:29Concerns are mounting.
00:18:30I understand this is your vision.
00:18:32I just don't want it to be the downfall of this entire week because the big things didn't get finished.
00:18:37Understood.
00:18:38I have an idea, like a drop area for all your beach stuff.
00:18:42And what would you put there that might add to the value?
00:18:45I don't know.
00:18:45I need to take five.
00:18:46Uh-oh.
00:18:48Is it me?
00:18:48No, it's me.
00:18:55Here we go.
00:18:56House number three.
00:18:58House three is 2,143 square feet.
00:19:02It has two bedrooms, one bath downstairs, and three bedrooms, two baths upstairs.
00:19:07I think our biggest fear with house number three is that it's small and there's only three bathrooms.
00:19:13So we're going to have to add a bathroom for sure.
00:19:16Wow.
00:19:18Wallpaper.
00:19:18I don't remember that.
00:19:19The table is right next to the door.
00:19:21A little tight.
00:19:22I don't love that.
00:19:23Where you don't want to pull the dishwasher in the fridge.
00:19:26That could be a problem.
00:19:27I mean, this whole kitchen needs to go.
00:19:29Let's be honest.
00:19:31The first bedrooms.
00:19:33Smallish.
00:19:34But there is a closet.
00:19:35And so the first floor bathroom.
00:19:37Tidy.
00:19:38For sure.
00:19:39But decent layout.
00:19:41All right, let's go upstairs.
00:19:42Tall ceilings.
00:19:44So right when you come up the stairs, you have this.
00:19:46I could see this out from the road.
00:19:48It's not real.
00:19:49Sticker.
00:19:50Sad.
00:19:51But again, the layout is not bad.
00:19:52We can work with this.
00:19:54This is the primary, I would say.
00:19:56Yeah.
00:19:57Bathroom.
00:19:57Windows look a little water damaged.
00:19:59Yeah, we definitely got some water damaged.
00:20:01This bathroom is huge.
00:20:03Double vanity.
00:20:05Wow.
00:20:06And all of this wallpaper.
00:20:08Yikes.
00:20:09What are the odds this actually works?
00:20:10It probably does, with mold coming out of it.
00:20:14All right, we're done with Peter's house.
00:20:16Our house is 2,300 square feet.
00:20:19On the first floor, there's one bedroom, one bath.
00:20:22And on the second floor, there's four bedrooms and four bathrooms.
00:20:26Oh, my God.
00:20:27It's hard to open the door now.
00:20:28Pull it.
00:20:29This is definitely getting replaced.
00:20:30Oh, my goodness.
00:20:31Oh, my goodness.
00:20:32Look at that popcorn.
00:20:35That's got to go.
00:20:36These windows are so gorgeous.
00:20:38That is.
00:20:39Oh, my God.
00:20:39This kitchen.
00:20:40Why are there two refrigerators in here?
00:20:43Oh, my goodness.
00:20:44Oh, this light gots to go.
00:20:46This is crazy old.
00:20:48It is.
00:20:49Woo!
00:20:49Definitely got to update this.
00:20:51Oh, my goodness.
00:20:53This carpet gots to go.
00:20:56Look at this.
00:20:57Look at this view.
00:20:58Look at this view.
00:20:58Look at this view.
00:20:58Oh.
00:21:00I am open to getting rid of that window.
00:21:03No.
00:21:05We're not going for this.
00:21:06We are going for that.
00:21:10Understood.
00:21:11I am the boss.
00:21:12She is the boss.
00:21:14He listens to me, and I appreciate that.
00:21:16He lets me have my space to control.
00:21:19Give it a little love.
00:21:20Yeah.
00:21:22Here we go.
00:21:23All right.
00:21:24Here we go.
00:21:25House one is 2,411 square feet.
00:21:29There's one bedroom and one bath on the first floor,
00:21:31and four bedrooms and four baths on the second floor.
00:21:35Popcorn.
00:21:35Popcorn.
00:21:36Popcorn.
00:21:36Everywhere.
00:21:37Popcorn.
00:21:38We have a fireplace.
00:21:40Do not use.
00:21:41Looks like we get two dining rooms.
00:21:43Two dining rooms.
00:21:45Double the seating.
00:21:46All your friends can come.
00:21:48Good-sized kitchen, but ugly kitchen.
00:21:50And apparently our entryways.
00:21:52This whole thing right here is just very congested.
00:21:54Straight into the kitchen.
00:21:55No place to drop your stuff.
00:21:57Now, where are we going?
00:21:58Bathroom.
00:21:58What in the...
00:22:00It's a long, narrow, ugly...
00:22:03Shotgun bathroom.
00:22:06Salmon.
00:22:06Is this salmon?
00:22:07Huge room.
00:22:09Carpet's got to go.
00:22:10Color's got to go.
00:22:11You want to head upstairs?
00:22:12Very dark.
00:22:14Ooh, very dark.
00:22:16Primary bedroom.
00:22:18Balcony.
00:22:18Something might be broken.
00:22:20Oh, yeah.
00:22:21It's kind of open.
00:22:22Bathroom looks small.
00:22:24Eh.
00:22:25I can't make that much bigger.
00:22:27Ugly as heck right now.
00:22:29Well, it's big.
00:22:32It's big.
00:22:32Big means more work.
00:22:33We got a lot of rooms to dress.
00:22:34A lot of work to do.
00:22:36We've got this.
00:22:37We've got this.
00:22:38We've got this.
00:22:41So what do you think of the living room?
00:22:42I like that the fireplace is centered.
00:22:44The fireplace is a little beat up.
00:22:47Hello.
00:22:47Hello.
00:22:49Okay.
00:22:50The living room.
00:22:51The first challenge.
00:22:52First challenge.
00:22:52I know.
00:22:53It's not huge.
00:22:54Yeah.
00:22:55We were thinking really tall built-ins on both sides.
00:22:57Like lots of cozy books and like a big coffee table here.
00:23:01It's got to function as coffee table store.
00:23:03Like anything that we put in here because it's kind of small.
00:23:06Yeah.
00:23:06So I think the pieces almost have to be multifunctional where they can either pull out and be a bed.
00:23:11That's the other thing.
00:23:12How do you raise the rental rate?
00:23:13You increase heads and beds.
00:23:15Maybe we could put Murphy beds on either side of the fireplace.
00:23:19Yeah, I like that.
00:23:20We have to think about what's going to be photo worthy when people are online looking for their vacation rental.
00:23:26Like what's going to make them stop and go, this is different.
00:23:29We like Mika's idea of adding twin Murphy beds on either side of the fireplace.
00:23:33It could be a great way of increasing rental value by sleeping a few more guests.
00:23:37For the design, we're leaning towards a boutique tropical retreat.
00:23:40So we're thinking maybe a beachy wallpaper or accent wall.
00:23:44Elevating the fireplace with a new marble or rustic wood mantle.
00:23:47Other wood accents like a coffee table and a statement light fixture should help tie everything together.
00:23:52One challenge is the lack of beach access.
00:23:54So we're thinking of replacing a window with a sliding door to improve indoor-outdoor flow.
00:23:59We know the slider could take up a good portion of the budget.
00:24:01But we're thinking there's a way to make it all work, somewhere in the range of $14,000.
00:24:06We know if we execute what we have in our brains and we just work really hard,
00:24:11we know we're going to put out a good product and hopefully win.
00:24:14Do you like very sophisticated, very relaxed beach style?
00:24:19I'm thinking lighter colors. I want it to be calming.
00:24:22Everyone can put a head in a bed, but how do we create an experience that's worthy of that much
00:24:26more of a rental rate per night?
00:24:28Yeah.
00:24:28Who's your client? Who are you trying to rent to?
00:24:31Possibly two families that can share this space.
00:24:34Okay, so we're going to commit right now that we are doing a family-friendly rental.
00:24:37Yes.
00:24:38Okay? All right, so how are we going to make money?
00:24:40As far as adding value, this space is just empty, so I don't know if it's part of the dining
00:24:44room or if it's part of the living room.
00:24:46If you potentially added another bedroom.
00:24:48I love it.
00:24:53This would be a really dope primary being on the main level and going right out to the main beach.
00:24:58Yes, yes, yes.
00:25:00We want to take a big picture approach maximizing rental potential while appealing to families by adding a second primary
00:25:07bedroom on the main floor.
00:25:08We'll have to frame a new wall to create a bedroom while keeping enough space for a living area.
00:25:14For design, we're thinking something like a transitional oceanfront resort, clean lines and neutral colors.
00:25:21We're hoping to add a light fixture and a few other features that will enhance a longer stay.
00:25:26With a budget of around $19,000, this transformation will maximize functionality and create a memorable high demand rental.
00:25:33Adding value, adding bedrooms, that's what we need to do to win this competition.
00:25:37You have to stick to that budget, okay?
00:25:39Okay.
00:25:40I like where we're going.
00:25:40I'm saying that to myself, too, because I'm really bad with budgets.
00:25:45What are you thinking?
00:25:46We're debating on if we need to get rid of this window so that we can do built-ins, even
00:25:51a little more cement.
00:25:52I mean, you're not necessarily getting huge ocean views this direction.
00:25:55I understand what you're saying, but maybe this becomes your build-out.
00:25:58I think companies and stores there, I think, also could work.
00:26:01Not what I was thinking, but we'll come back.
00:26:03But you don't have to, but I totally want to be looking this way.
00:26:08Yes, this way.
00:26:08Yes.
00:26:09Oh, sure.
00:26:10Do we build build-outs, and the couch goes in between it?
00:26:14That way you keep your view and your sofa still looking that direction.
00:26:18It's the only wall you have in the living room.
00:26:20What else could happen there that could add some life?
00:26:23Well, I want wood somewhere.
00:26:24I want it to feel warm and welcoming.
00:26:26Okay.
00:26:27I'm open to other options.
00:26:28I'm a little close to that.
00:26:29Mm-hmm.
00:26:31I have an idea.
00:26:33So where are the kitchens at?
00:26:34What if we had, like, a drop area for all your beach stuff and made this more of an entryway?
00:26:43See, we are so different on our thoughts.
00:26:46I mean, what would you put there that might add to the value of the house?
00:26:49Well, if we're...
00:26:49Are we both on the same...
00:26:51Are we not?
00:26:52I don't know.
00:26:52I know we were.
00:26:53We were talking about that.
00:26:55Ty's and my style isn't necessarily the same.
00:26:57I feel like him and my mom will get along more on their design styles.
00:27:01Can you explain, like, what the entry vision you have?
00:27:05Just what do you see when you...
00:27:06I just know when you're at the beach, you got a lot of beach gear.
00:27:09You got a lot of things you want to drop.
00:27:11Denise, I will agree.
00:27:12That...
00:27:12I will agree with you.
00:27:13That entry over there is what you're saying.
00:27:16So make it like a bench where you can sit down...
00:27:17I feel like I need to take five.
00:27:18Sorry.
00:27:19Uh-oh.
00:27:22Is it me?
00:27:23No, it's me.
00:27:27I just feel like they're connecting on all their ideas.
00:27:31Like, why am I here?
00:27:33Like, I just want to feel like I'm part of the team and, like, everything I say.
00:27:37I just feel like they...
00:27:37Like, my mom and my style is just so different.
00:27:40And I don't want to feel like I'm not being seen.
00:27:46Before this, we talked about stuff and I felt like she heard me.
00:27:51and, like, I felt like we were going to, like, take some of my ideas.
00:27:56And I honestly felt like she loved my ideas.
00:27:59And then, like, we get here and it feels like that's, like,
00:28:02kind of thrown out the window a little bit.
00:28:04But sometimes I just feel like she doesn't see me or hear me.
00:28:13I wanted to hear your thoughts.
00:28:15Yeah, I just...
00:28:16In general...
00:28:17Yeah.
00:28:17I feel like I'm just maybe a little bit different
00:28:19in, like, what I envisioned the house for,
00:28:23or, like, my style and stuff like that.
00:28:25And I just felt like it was, like, the fireplace.
00:28:27It was the built-ins.
00:28:28It was the wall, the wood.
00:28:30I just wasn't necessarily in agreement on all of them.
00:28:33And I just felt like I didn't want to say my opinion
00:28:35because it was different.
00:28:36Here's what you need to understand.
00:28:38We're almost retired, which means we have no future.
00:28:42We need your input more than anything.
00:28:46I just don't know if I want wood on that wall.
00:28:49Then don't...
00:28:50Then you don't have to have wood on that wall.
00:28:54I just don't want to say stuff because then I feel, like,
00:28:56embarrassed when...
00:28:58You're kidding me.
00:28:58Well, my mom sometimes tells me,
00:29:01I don't know about that.
00:29:02And I'm like, I shouldn't have said anything.
00:29:04Now I'm embarrassed.
00:29:06I think that's part of the design process.
00:29:09It's such a struggle.
00:29:10There's going to be some pressure.
00:29:11This is not the only time you're going to have a breakdown.
00:29:14Trust me.
00:29:16Clearly, day one.
00:29:18Didn't think it would happen this early, but...
00:29:20Room one!
00:29:22I do feel like he heard me and he saw me,
00:29:24and he was like, you have it, too.
00:29:27You know, a lot of people don't realize the emotion
00:29:30that design brings on.
00:29:31We have very similar qualities of just kind of, like,
00:29:34poking at each other.
00:29:35And then all of a sudden, it will be, like, a break.
00:29:38So a little scared for that.
00:29:40I'm going to say my one tidbit.
00:29:42Yeah, what would you like?
00:29:42A two cents.
00:29:44My mind goes to the fireplace being the center of attention.
00:29:49Okay.
00:29:50And not necessarily having to do something huge over here.
00:29:55Something to fill up the space without necessarily
00:29:58having to spend more money.
00:30:00That's a good idea.
00:30:02We're bringing our ideas together
00:30:04and putting the focus where it belongs, on the fireplace.
00:30:07By reimagining it with added texture,
00:30:09we can turn it into a true focal point
00:30:11that leans into a coastal cottage theme.
00:30:14Then, we'll build around it with functional updates
00:30:16that add style and help the space work a whole lot better.
00:30:20Overall, we're looking to elevate the space
00:30:22with warm, organic textures paired with wood beams
00:30:25that tie back to the mantle.
00:30:27To finish it off, we're thinking lighter furniture for better flow,
00:30:30along with a gallery wall to tie together that coastal cottage vibe.
00:30:34In the entryway, we're planning a big change
00:30:36by removing the second fridge and cramped pantry
00:30:39and converting that area into a drop zone,
00:30:42giving guests a space to kick off sandals and hang towels
00:30:45when returning from the beach.
00:30:46With these updates, we feel like we can transform
00:30:48this once cluttered living area
00:30:50all while staying somewhere around a budget of $11,000.
00:30:55All right. Do we feel good about a plan here?
00:30:57Yes. Yes.
00:30:57Okay. Yes.
00:30:58All right. I knew the mother-daughter relationship
00:31:00wasn't going to be easy,
00:31:02but I didn't expect her to be an emotional breakdown day one.
00:31:05All right. Bye, guys.
00:31:07Goodbye.
00:31:08This is going to be interesting.
00:31:13Oh, man. It's feeling big in here now.
00:31:16Welcome.
00:31:17Okay. So, step one.
00:31:19We want to redo the mat so we can get rid of all that, right?
00:31:22Yep.
00:31:22We might save the stone to use it somewhere else
00:31:25because it's not bad.
00:31:26I don't know. A DIY project.
00:31:27I love a DIY because guess what?
00:31:29DIY usually means we're saving money.
00:31:32Normally, Josiah is the main demoer and I'm the baby watcher,
00:31:36but today I got in there. I got it done.
00:31:38Oh, look at that. I felt like it wiggled out.
00:31:41It was like a loose tooth.
00:31:42This is in great shape.
00:31:43Yeah.
00:31:44So, yeah, maybe a floating shelf in the bathroom.
00:31:47Almost.
00:31:48Oh!
00:31:48Oh!
00:31:49Not as gentle as the first one.
00:31:51Oh!
00:31:51Okay. We can still use it.
00:31:52Okay.
00:31:53Oh, my gosh. And you saved it all.
00:31:55Nice.
00:31:55We're going to need headboards.
00:31:57We're going to need all kinds of stuff.
00:31:58Gosh, the fireplace already looks better.
00:32:00Yeah. That's exciting.
00:32:01But the bad news is it is broken.
00:32:04We just found that out.
00:32:05So, we need to maybe do an electric insert or...
00:32:09Yikes.
00:32:12Let's just get it out of here.
00:32:14Get a good pull.
00:32:15This is awesome.
00:32:17Look at that.
00:32:17Ugh.
00:32:18Ready?
00:32:19One, two, three.
00:32:23Go up.
00:32:24We don't have much demo to do, so we're going to get started right away
00:32:28on framing and drywalling our new primary bedroom.
00:32:39You guys are already getting started.
00:32:41Yeah.
00:32:42I'm late to the party.
00:32:43We are.
00:32:43Demo-ing is our thing.
00:32:45Yeah.
00:32:45She's a beast, and I kind of just let her go at it.
00:32:47She just...
00:32:48Living her best life.
00:32:51You're a beast.
00:32:55Nice.
00:32:56Nice.
00:33:00There we go.
00:33:01Clean work environment is an efficient work environment.
00:33:04You're not my cleaning.
00:33:04No, I actually enjoy the cleaning.
00:33:07I let you have that, and I'm like, I'll just clean up after you.
00:33:10I don't mind.
00:33:11You're going faster than I can even throw it away.
00:33:14Here's one more.
00:33:15Stick to what you're good at.
00:33:16I'll stick to what I'm good at.
00:33:19Sydney, Michelle, come here really quick.
00:33:21Elephant in the room.
00:33:24There is a leak, which we cannot have if we're going to do an electric fireplace.
00:33:29So, brace yourself for probably a $500 or more quote to get the leak fixed.
00:33:39We've already committed to making the fireplace the focal point of this room, and there's no time to pivot.
00:33:43So, unfortunately, our best option is just to pay for the fix.
00:33:47Little extra out of budget that we were not factoring.
00:33:50They're just going to be putting like a cap and sealing it so that nothing more happens.
00:33:56This really sucks, but we can make it beautiful now.
00:33:59We can start the beauty.
00:34:01Okay, we just got to figure it out quick.
00:34:03Okay.
00:34:04Yeah, I know.
00:34:04Yeah.
00:34:09You're so excited to get this build ready.
00:34:12Yeah, come on.
00:34:13Hurry up now.
00:34:14Don't hit me with the wood.
00:34:16Don't rush.
00:34:17Be careful.
00:34:18We're planning an elaborate DIY design for our staircase and hallway using interconnected wood trim.
00:34:24Today, we need to cut all of our wood into specific pieces so it fits together like a puzzle.
00:34:32Push again.
00:34:36Don't lift it up.
00:34:38I'm not.
00:34:38I'm pushing it.
00:34:41So listen, real quick, because we're going to make it wobbly.
00:34:44Keep pushing it against this right here.
00:34:47Don't lift it because you're going to make the blade jump.
00:34:51I'm feeling a lot of pressure because realistically, I'm a great, great craftsman, but I can't fully give my full
00:34:59potential only because of some of the constraints.
00:35:01There's no time for that.
00:35:03You're lifting it.
00:35:04I'm pushing it.
00:35:07I'm pushing it.
00:35:07I'm pushing a handle.
00:35:08Listen, just keep pushing it against this.
00:35:11This one is wobbly because you are in control.
00:35:14How about you push and I hold this part so you can see how easy it is.
00:35:19Yep.
00:35:21She's a good teacher.
00:35:22Just when it comes to me, no.
00:35:39I put a lot of pressure on other people because I kind of want people to read my minds, but
00:35:43nobody can read minds.
00:35:45I'm learning I do not do good under pressure.
00:35:47So can we just communicate for a second?
00:35:49Do you see when I was pushing it because it has the bend, you got to put a little light
00:35:53pressure on it.
00:35:54I just do it.
00:35:55I just, I don't know how to teach you, I guess.
00:35:56It don't matter.
00:35:57I'm just tired of how you communicate.
00:35:59He don't want to be embarrassed because he don't, because I know how to do that and he don't.
00:36:03I know.
00:36:03Leave me alone.
00:36:08Bro, 15 seconds.
00:36:09I'm asking you to leave me alone, yo, and you're not. Leave me alone.
00:36:18I'm going to take my mind off of all this so I can create it.
00:36:21This is what is necessary so we can win this.
00:36:26Having the blue is helpful for me to see the design I'm trying to achieve.
00:36:34Honestly, did not expect me and my husband to have that little bull out of a fight.
00:36:42I really hope I didn't disrespect him, say anything that was hurtful.
00:36:47There's a lot of pressure having to do so much in so little time, but it's just, you know, it's
00:36:53frustrating.
00:36:55I will apologize and move on because we have a common goal, which is to win this competition.
00:37:01And that is what's going to happen.
00:37:04Today our fireplace is being capped and my mom and I are inside nailing up some shiplap panels on the
00:37:10wall and also the ceiling.
00:37:13I've got it!
00:37:14The paneling that we're using is supposed to look like shiplap, original shiplap.
00:37:20You could not afford original shiplap, so this is the next best thing.
00:37:25Ah, it's coming down!
00:37:26I was afraid that those brads aren't going to hold this .
00:37:29The ceiling is a little bit trickier.
00:37:31Brad nails are just not enough for it to hang on to.
00:37:35And we can't do screws because screws aren't going to look good.
00:37:38We can return the panels that we have.
00:37:41I think it's going to work.
00:37:44I'm just worried about it hanging and warbling.
00:37:46If you are so sure this is going to work, why don't you two put it up and I am
00:37:50just going to sit over here in the chair and watch.
00:37:55Right there, yep, you're good.
00:37:59Nope, too far.
00:38:00Right there-ish.
00:38:03Didn't fall yet.
00:38:06They needed to prove that they were right and I was wrong.
00:38:08And we are!
00:38:18So the plan for the living room is changed a few times.
00:38:21And we talked about potentially doing a Murphy bed and that's what Mika was suggesting.
00:38:25We scratched that.
00:38:27With the window right here, it's a little tight, so we thought we're just going to pivot to floating shelves.
00:38:32And that would be a good alternative.
00:38:34This is a good plan.
00:38:35We'll have to tell Mika.
00:38:36Hopefully she's not too mad.
00:38:37She was really set on that.
00:38:38I know.
00:38:39I think she'll understand with just, you know, window.
00:38:41It doesn't really function too well.
00:38:44She didn't actually measure for this space.
00:38:46Yeah.
00:38:46So she's just like looking at it firsthand.
00:38:49I do think when she walks in, she's going to have like a, what happened to my Murphy bed?
00:38:54I feel a little sad.
00:38:56Hopefully she doesn't take it personally.
00:38:58No turning back now.
00:38:59We're doing it.
00:39:05Time is ticking.
00:39:06So we really need to finish putting up the wood slates on our custom staircase design.
00:39:11Pieces are making me go.
00:39:12Pieces.
00:39:13I would say that the time is getting to her more.
00:39:16Definitely.
00:39:17I can see the frustration building because she knows, you know, time is against us.
00:39:20The first weekend we're already fighting.
00:39:22There's so much more competition that is still left to come.
00:39:26But honestly, as long as we know the final goal and that we stay focused for that, I think we'll
00:39:32be good. I really do.
00:39:34I think we're going to still bump heads though.
00:39:36But I think we'll, I think we'll come together.
00:39:38We got the bad apples out of the way.
00:39:41We got a notification.
00:39:43Our flooring was delivered.
00:39:45Flooring was outside.
00:39:46I immediately ran downstairs.
00:39:48We was just trying to get a little peek inside.
00:39:49Hey!
00:39:51What are you doing?
00:39:53Hey!
00:39:54Is this y'all?
00:39:55It's at our house.
00:39:56Ours was supposed to come in today too.
00:39:59This is ours.
00:40:00Somebody's already trying to peep.
00:40:02Well, let me see.
00:40:03Hold on.
00:40:04Thanks for the assistance.
00:40:05Yeah, right?
00:40:06We'll go see.
00:40:07We'll go see.
00:40:07What?
00:40:08What?
00:40:09Hey, Michelle!
00:40:10This is not for her.
00:40:12Get out of the truck!
00:40:13That lady crazy.
00:40:14Yeah, seven, seven, seven, five, four, eight.
00:40:17Seven, five, four, eight.
00:40:18Seven, five, four, eight.
00:40:19Color number 324.
00:40:21That's all we got?
00:40:21Number 324.
00:40:23All right, I'm going to look theirs up for real.
00:40:24White glove delivery.
00:40:26A little head start.
00:40:28Let's see if the color is as we wanted.
00:40:33Whoo!
00:40:34These are gorgeous.
00:40:43This flooring is taking way too long.
00:40:47Babe, I need you to come here, please.
00:40:51I really need to finish our staircase project.
00:40:55I just need you to take over if you can.
00:40:58Have some shorter starters, some longer starters.
00:41:02Break it up.
00:41:03That'll be the best way to try to keep this pattern not so brick layout
00:41:07and more of a flow.
00:41:09I've been doing renovations for three years.
00:41:11She's been doing it for about eight years.
00:41:13So I wanted to have her trust me on job sites where she's not around.
00:41:17I know what she expects.
00:41:20So I'm just trying to show her that I pay attention.
00:41:24Me being able to take over something that she is really good at just kind of shows that
00:41:29she trusts my judgment.
00:41:37Babe, I need your help because I'm not going to be able to reach this.
00:41:40Ready?
00:41:44All right.
00:41:45All right.
00:41:45I'll try not to make the design too crazy, but you still got to get all that.
00:41:53Even though all of these angles have been really complicated, I am so excited for how this is starting to
00:41:59look.
00:41:59I know I had to, you know, sorry, go into more of the budget for it to happen.
00:42:05But please believe me when I say that that was a good idea.
00:42:10It's definitely time consuming.
00:42:11Oh yeah, for sure.
00:42:12We definitely got to finish today because we got to move on to other projects.
00:42:17Yeah.
00:42:17Just trust me.
00:42:18It's going to be worth it.
00:42:19This is setting the bar real high.
00:42:21They don't even know what we got in store.
00:42:22They don't even know what we got in store.
00:42:27Today, we're sanding down the popcorn ceilings and painting in our living room.
00:42:32Oh my gosh.
00:42:33Work has started.
00:42:35Yeah.
00:42:36What you think?
00:42:37As soon as I walked in, it was like, boom, this is where my attention was drawn.
00:42:40We will have a reclaimed mantle here, which is going to be really cool.
00:42:45We kind of brainstormed some initial ideas.
00:42:48So I'm curious, has anything pivoted?
00:42:51Yes.
00:42:52What do you think?
00:42:53One thing I am seeing is some changes to our original game plan.
00:42:57The floating shelves are kind of anchored here.
00:43:00Where are my Murphy beds?
00:43:07So we really liked your idea, but functionally, we weren't sure if it's going to work.
00:43:12I just want to make sure throughout the house that we have those, like, wow moments that
00:43:15are going to be kind of surprises for the judge, because I think that's what's going to make
00:43:18it memorable.
00:43:19So we didn't get the twin beds.
00:43:21That's okay.
00:43:21What about the access to this deck from this living room?
00:43:24It's going right here.
00:43:25Yes!
00:43:26This whole window will be a giant slider.
00:43:30We're excited.
00:43:30I love that.
00:43:32Okay, yeah.
00:43:33But there's more.
00:43:33It's not just the living room for this challenge.
00:43:35It's also the entry and the stairs.
00:43:38On the stairs, we'll add some character with a creative design treatment and an updated
00:43:42railing detail.
00:43:43In a vacation rental, convenience goes a long way, so we want to use the landing at the
00:43:48top of the stairs to create a functional spot for a few everyday essentials.
00:43:52Taking it to the next level.
00:43:54Literally.
00:43:54Remember this guy?
00:43:55It's so chunky.
00:43:57Yeah.
00:43:57We don't love it.
00:43:58But we have a solution maybe.
00:44:01We found these little windows at a salvage yard.
00:44:04The thought is we find where the walls framed out and they go kind of in the cavities.
00:44:10So we have a little light just to give it some character because this is so boring.
00:44:14Yeah.
00:44:15But if the studs are too close together, this won't work.
00:44:17I love it.
00:44:18We need to make sure we can even do it, which means demo.
00:44:21Fingers crossed.
00:44:22All right.
00:44:22Let's get some tools.
00:44:29Easy.
00:44:30Easy.
00:44:32Yes.
00:44:33That's good.
00:44:34Oh, yeah.
00:44:35We've got plenty of room.
00:44:36Perfect space.
00:44:36So this is a really cool pivot, you guys.
00:44:39This is like touching every spot of the house so that it tells a story on every level.
00:44:43Yeah.
00:44:43So putting design elements and character in every single space is probably what it's going
00:44:49to take to win.
00:44:50However, we are restricted on how much time we have.
00:44:53The worst thing would be you have all these ideas, you started, and you're not done before
00:44:58the judges arrive.
00:45:00Kind of scary.
00:45:01This is a good find.
00:45:02As long as we have time to finish it.
00:45:09Hello, hello.
00:45:10What's going on?
00:45:11We are trying to get these in as fast as we can.
00:45:16We're halfway through the first week here and concerns are mounting.
00:45:21Real-world check-in time.
00:45:23How are you two feeling?
00:45:25We're trying to, you know, just be there for support for one another.
00:45:29Yeah.
00:45:30The days have been getting the best of us.
00:45:32We just try to block out all of the, you know, negativity or anything that's just
00:45:38kind of stirring up and just kind of keep moving forward.
00:45:40Ask for help in the areas that you need it.
00:45:43You both can't do it all.
00:45:44I know, but the numbers be killing me.
00:45:48Like, the budget.
00:45:49I can't.
00:45:50I literally think I can do it all, but with the time I can't.
00:45:54You can't.
00:45:54I don't want to just subcontract people because we need to spread that money out so that we
00:46:00can bring home the win.
00:46:01You guys are going to get burnt out.
00:46:03This is week one.
00:46:04And you're going to be in the final week and you're going to have nothing.
00:46:07You're going to be exhausted.
00:46:08You're going to be beyond worn out.
00:46:10You're going to be arguing with each other.
00:46:11And you're going to be really feeling the stress of making this and getting across the finish.
00:46:15So you can't do that to yourselves.
00:46:17Understood.
00:46:18Does that make sense?
00:46:18Yeah, it makes sense.
00:46:19Yes, that does.
00:46:20I know you've also been working on the stairs.
00:46:22Yes.
00:46:22Yes.
00:46:23As well.
00:46:24Oh.
00:46:25You guys have been busy.
00:46:28There's a huge scope of work.
00:46:29We have to be very mindful of not getting sucked into some of these projects that are eating
00:46:36up the overall time that we have here.
00:46:39So it's like a freestyle.
00:46:40Freestyle.
00:46:41Abstract.
00:46:42Sorry, no one here.
00:46:43I think this is gorgeous.
00:46:45But by the time this is done, how many hours are you going to have committed to this?
00:46:50A day.
00:46:51A full day's worth of work.
00:46:52And do you think that value is going to be there?
00:46:54I believe the wow factor will definitely create the value that is there, yes.
00:46:59Okay.
00:47:00But we are not doing this again anywhere else because this was time consuming.
00:47:04Thank you.
00:47:04Because this is a day, like a whole day.
00:47:07We don't want to have Sarah pulling the hair out.
00:47:09I already am, you two, and this is the first week.
00:47:13Angelina and Steven have a concrete idea of where they want this house to go.
00:47:17You two are killing me here.
00:47:20I really feel responsible to kind of not allow them to get just preoccupied with all
00:47:26of the wonderful things they'd love to add on to the space.
00:47:30I understand this is your vision, and you love it, and I will be here to support it.
00:47:33I just don't want it to be the downfall of this entire week because the big things didn't get finished.
00:47:39Understood.
00:47:46Our living room is coming together, so now it's time to refresh the stairs and landing with updated wallpaper, new
00:47:52lighting, and transom windows that bring in more natural light.
00:47:58All right.
00:48:00You like our fireplace?
00:48:01Well, I like the fact that the old one's gone.
00:48:03Yeah.
00:48:04I was expecting to see more done.
00:48:06We have a fireplace still, which is great.
00:48:11Um, but we've got a long way to go.
00:48:13So what's the plan?
00:48:14We've got a new working one coming in.
00:48:16Yep.
00:48:16Electric, yep.
00:48:17Okay, I love it.
00:48:18We're gonna still do the mantel?
00:48:19Yep.
00:48:19We got some brick here.
00:48:21You didn't get any backup plan B, right?
00:48:24Like, tile of any kind?
00:48:25Okay, so it's brick or nothing.
00:48:27It's brick.
00:48:28I can feel your hesitation.
00:48:30Yeah.
00:48:31Like, this is gonna be a challenge.
00:48:33You know that, right?
00:48:33Yeah.
00:48:34My whole kitchen has brick floors.
00:48:36Floors work really well because of the gravity.
00:48:39Getting this thing here is a whole different story.
00:48:41Did you ever decide on what the color of the walls are gonna be?
00:48:44White walls and an accent trim, like a sage green.
00:48:48So you're gonna do green trim on white walls?
00:48:50Yep.
00:48:51That means even the trim on the windows is gonna go green.
00:48:54Yep, just the outer portion.
00:48:56The outer portion.
00:48:57Have you seen a picture of something like that that works?
00:49:00Yep.
00:49:00I'd love to see that picture.
00:49:03I do love the ceiling.
00:49:04I'm guessing the beam's gonna cover the gap though, right?
00:49:06Yep.
00:49:07Well, that looks great.
00:49:08You got Wayne's cutting on the wall.
00:49:09That was a bit of a challenge.
00:49:11Yeah, nothing's leveling houses like this.
00:49:13No.
00:49:13So you're still thinking gallery walls?
00:49:15Yeah, we've got a whole bunch of frames coming to kind of fill them in.
00:49:18I don't know if just, like, simple framed artwork is gonna be enough to sway judges.
00:49:23I don't think that's going to make somebody go like, that's why I want to rent this place.
00:49:27I also want to talk about the entryway.
00:49:29You know, let's take a look.
00:49:31So there used to be a closet.
00:49:33Yep.
00:49:33We took that out.
00:49:36What's the plan here?
00:49:37It's kind of like a gallery wall.
00:49:40So this is gonna be your gallery wall.
00:49:41Well, it's a different version.
00:49:43I found these fish.
00:49:45I'll show you a picture of them.
00:49:47Oh, okay.
00:49:48I love fish.
00:49:48Yeah.
00:49:49You got your grouper, your snapper.
00:49:50Yep.
00:49:51Yeah.
00:49:51And they're in just like a simple black matted frame.
00:49:53And then we're gonna put like a fishing pole holder on the ceiling and put like six fishing
00:50:00poles.
00:50:02Okay.
00:50:04Um.
00:50:05Got bigger ideas.
00:50:06This screams.
00:50:08This is where I take off my stuff.
00:50:10I put my towel down.
00:50:11I like the idea of the old school fishing.
00:50:14But how about this?
00:50:15Like you could also use old fishing reels.
00:50:18You could turn those into hangers.
00:50:19Instead of it just being art, could it also be a little bit of function?
00:50:23That is a recipe for a disorganized hall room.
00:50:27I just don't like seeing everybody's coats.
00:50:31So here's the thing.
00:50:33I've seen this scenario play out.
00:50:35It's not adding anything structural to the build.
00:50:38And I think whenever you just use art, you don't win because it's just art.
00:50:42And anybody can put any kind of art they want up.
00:50:52This entrance is more important than I think we're putting emphasis on.
00:50:56But like it's the first thing people are gonna see when they walk in.
00:50:58That's all I'm saying.
00:50:59We've already got the fireplace built in.
00:51:01We've already got the brick.
00:51:02We've got the ceiling.
00:51:03We've got the beams.
00:51:04We've got the transoms.
00:51:05We can't build any more stuff.
00:51:07I think we just have to stick with that unless...
00:51:10If we can stick some hooks here and there, we'll stick some hooks.
00:51:12Yeah.
00:51:12Okay.
00:51:13Artwork and cutesy things are great at people saying I love it.
00:51:17But it's not necessarily the same thing as saying this was a very smart move.
00:51:22This is why these guys won.
00:51:24I don't think that's going to make somebody go like that's why I want to rent this place.
00:51:29So what needs to be done and how soon can we do it?
00:51:33Right.
00:51:34So...
00:51:35You came to work today, right?
00:51:36Yeah.
00:51:36Let's do it.
00:51:45Today we're building a coffee table out of salvaged materials while our sliding glass door is being installed.
00:51:51And we are adding a kitchenette on our landing which I don't think any other team is doing that.
00:51:55Our cabinets and wine fridge have arrived and we're excited to show Mika.
00:51:59Is this a wine fridge?
00:52:01Oh, yeah.
00:52:02You're speaking my language.
00:52:04I love this cabinetry.
00:52:06This is so nice.
00:52:08This is going to be a win for you guys.
00:52:11We're just thinking about the guests start to finish what works and what doesn't work and try to do that
00:52:16in our design.
00:52:17I feel like this living room feels so much bigger.
00:52:21I know it wasn't cheap.
00:52:23This whole door costs about $8,000.
00:52:26This is going to pay off for sure.
00:52:27I really feel like you guys made the right decision with this investment.
00:52:31I love the symmetry of the floating shelves, plus a fireplace gives me cozy, quiet luxury.
00:52:37We are definitely going to make these other teams work very hard to try to beat us.
00:52:44We could not cap our fireplace.
00:52:47We had to pay $500.
00:52:48So we decided it's probably a good idea to do some thrifting.
00:52:53So we need a couch for the living room.
00:52:57I am not howling that upstairs.
00:52:59That's a sleeper.
00:53:01Oh, and no way.
00:53:03What about this couch?
00:53:04Not the cleanest of cleans.
00:53:06Seen better days.
00:53:07I think we could get that to work.
00:53:10It's neutral enough.
00:53:11Hopefully the snakes come out.
00:53:13I know.
00:53:14I think it's $200.
00:53:15Yeah.
00:53:16We know what we were looking at for new ones.
00:53:19The cheapest we could find was like $5.50.
00:53:22For something we'd order and don't know what it looks like.
00:53:24Gotta risk it for the biscuit.
00:53:28So provided our couch comes clean, we gotta haul.
00:53:32And if not, that's what they make throw blankets for.
00:53:41So adding a fireplace to our design was definitely a last minute decision, but it was necessary because our living
00:53:49room was lacking character.
00:53:51You go this way.
00:53:53Steven found a really great fireplace that was within the budget and I decided to add some shiplap to it
00:54:01so that I can give it a little bit more design.
00:54:04It looks good though.
00:54:05It does.
00:54:05It looks really good.
00:54:07It's such a big impact for so little money.
00:54:09We're wondering where else we could do something like this.
00:54:12Why don't we faux create a little bit of detail, applied molding, with what we have on site.
00:54:18Because I do not want to spend any more of your budget.
00:54:21We have a ton of baseboards, so we're gonna cheat, cheat, cheat till the cows come home.
00:54:25We're gonna use this as a chair roll.
00:54:27Then we have some detail.
00:54:28Deal.
00:54:28Okay.
00:54:29All right.
00:54:30I'm so glad we got to add some character to this room because adding a bedroom was not enough to
00:54:36win this competition.
00:54:37We got to make this room like really stand out.
00:54:40And this is adding to the vision.
00:54:44Today, subcontractors are installing new quartzite around the fireplace.
00:54:47We are hanging our wallpaper, painting our staircase, and installing our rope handrail before we install the wood mantle.
00:54:54This is a beast.
00:54:56Bring it your way.
00:54:57Perfect.
00:54:58Okay.
00:55:04If I step back and then see how it looks.
00:55:07Okay.
00:55:08That's cool.
00:55:08I like the little green paint on the end.
00:55:10It's got a new life.
00:55:11Yay!
00:55:16I still can't get over how amazingly lucky we got with these breads.
00:55:21I know.
00:55:21Wow.
00:55:22That's incredible.
00:55:23Let's get a beam up and see what this looks like.
00:55:25This is gonna really change the vibe, man.
00:55:28I love it.
00:55:29Good work, everybody.
00:55:30Yeah.
00:55:34Well, this looks amazing.
00:55:36It does look amazing.
00:55:37I mean, really, really good.
00:55:38We might just have a winning living room.
00:55:40All right.
00:55:41Let's stay at it.
00:55:43Hour and a half.
00:55:44We gotta pull it all together.
00:55:45It's gonna look good if we finish.
00:55:47It's time to bring in our judges from Hawaii, Tristan and Kamahai Kalama.
00:55:55That is cool.
00:55:55I like that a lot.
00:55:57There aren't a lot of other features in here.
00:56:00Don't know if the decision you made here makes sense.
00:56:04Now for the twist.
00:56:05What?
00:56:06We're upping the ante.
00:56:14Hour and a half.
00:56:15We gotta pull it all together.
00:56:16Hopefully, you've got your art ready to go that's gonna go in here.
00:56:19Oh, yeah.
00:56:19Oh, yeah.
00:56:19Lots.
00:56:20We need to get this mantle up.
00:56:21Yep.
00:56:22And then...
00:56:23That puppy goes in.
00:56:25So we've got a lot going on with this race to the finish.
00:56:27We've got curtains and rods to go up.
00:56:30We've got two gallery walls.
00:56:31Two.
00:56:33We gotta put the cover that goes on that thing.
00:56:35Did this go through a washing machine or something?
00:56:37It did.
00:56:38Skin tight.
00:56:40This is the crunch time right here.
00:56:42Yeah.
00:56:42We have a bedroom, living room, and a landing.
00:56:44A lot of furniture to get up.
00:56:45I can start getting beds made, styling, all that.
00:56:48But let's get the big heavy stuff up first.
00:56:50I'll finish wiping this down.
00:56:51We'll be ready.
00:56:51Yes, ma'am.
00:56:53We have no time, but we have so many projects that are unfinished.
00:56:58It is very fast and...
00:57:00Stressful.
00:57:01You guys did buy the biggest sofa known to mankind.
00:57:04The boys are bringing up the heavy sleeper sofa.
00:57:07There we go, boys.
00:57:08Perfect.
00:57:10Racing to the finish for this first week's challenge,
00:57:12it's all about divide and conquer.
00:57:14We have the living room space.
00:57:15We've got the staircase and the landing.
00:57:17We are trying to make sure that we use our time wisely
00:57:20so we can pull off a win.
00:57:21Big pieces coming in.
00:57:23That's huge.
00:57:31My word.
00:57:32Now we're talking.
00:57:34Why does yours look so frumpy?
00:57:41All right, let's try it. Slide it on.
00:57:43Look.
00:57:44Looks hella good.
00:57:46I can't see.
00:57:48Touch up.
00:57:49I don't want to touch up.
00:57:51Sarah's helping with placement.
00:57:52Steven's putting up the curtains.
00:57:54We're all dividing and conquering and making sure that all of these spaces are equally attended to.
00:57:59Oh my God, this is the last thing I want to be doing is painting on the day of safety.
00:58:03I do not want the judges to point it out.
00:58:08Okay.
00:58:09Wiping down the surface areas here.
00:58:11This kitchenette was such a good idea.
00:58:14All three of us are running on adrenaline.
00:58:16This is week one.
00:58:17This is our first space that's gonna get judged.
00:58:20How's upstairs look?
00:58:21It's coming together.
00:58:23It's gonna look good if we finish.
00:58:26I'm just paranoid of finishing now.
00:58:30We're starting the winging process.
00:58:33I am a winger to my core.
00:58:36Maybe it would look better if I took more time.
00:58:38But we adjust the furniture accordingly.
00:58:41We can slide it over a little bit.
00:58:43We'll center it.
00:58:43A lot of fish.
00:58:46Running out of time.
00:58:48Running out of hope.
00:58:50Running out of dreams.
00:58:52You guys think we got a chance at winning this one?
00:58:54We hope so.
00:58:55We hope so.
00:58:5730 minutes left, guys.
00:58:59We gotta hurry up in no time.
00:59:04Staircase acrobats by Mika.
00:59:07Squeaky clean, baby.
00:59:08It's all fun and games until they say judges are coming.
00:59:11Or to hang this picture in a time crunch.
00:59:13Yeah, exactly.
00:59:15Boy, I'm struggling over here.
00:59:17There's a time crunch and extra stress.
00:59:19I am struggling to hang this wall art.
00:59:22Ah!
00:59:24A lot of pressure to hang wall art when there's pressure.
00:59:33This is literally the largest of them.
00:59:39Drapes are so complicated.
00:59:42I feel like I should move this.
00:59:46Babe, we got 10 minutes left.
00:59:48It won't go in.
00:59:49It's not enough.
00:59:50And that's the longest that they came.
00:59:52I need the pole extension.
00:59:55Where is it?
00:59:56At the warehouse, tagged as we don't want.
00:59:58Well, that's not helpful.
01:00:00That shouldn't have gone to the do not want,
01:00:02because you needed it.
01:00:05I've been making a call for your life to see what you can get.
01:00:09Okay.
01:00:19Let's figure this out.
01:00:21You have a whole other rod set.
01:00:23Yeah, we do.
01:00:23Then just do a single here, and then do one more single over that.
01:00:26Honestly, while we're doing all of this staging, it is very hectic.
01:00:30There's so much to do.
01:00:32I'm over here hanging curtain rods for way too long.
01:00:35I don't know if we're even going to finish in time.
01:00:37We can make it work.
01:00:41Thank you.
01:00:48Your wall of fish have been mounted.
01:00:52Five minutes.
01:00:54Man, that's the fastest hour and a half of my life.
01:00:56Coming together, coming together.
01:01:02You got to stop in two minutes.
01:01:04Put that in the corner, and I think that is all we have time for.
01:01:08You've got this.
01:01:09You've got this.
01:01:10Thank you.
01:01:10I'll see you on the beach.
01:01:12See ya.
01:01:12Good luck.
01:01:13See ya.
01:01:14See you soon.
01:01:16Babe, we got one minute.
01:01:22Five, four, three, two, one.
01:01:27My God.
01:01:29Rushed, rushed, rushed, but it's pretty pretty pretty.
01:01:40Come on in.
01:01:43Well rested.
01:01:44I don't know.
01:01:45They still look like they all love each other.
01:01:46Your clothes aren't too dirty.
01:01:48Well, we're just getting started.
01:01:49Yeah?
01:01:49Yeah.
01:01:51Congratulations on finishing your first battle.
01:01:54Yeah.
01:01:56With your first room finished, it's time to bring in our judges.
01:02:01Yes.
01:02:02You know them from their hit series, Renovation Aloha.
01:02:06They're not here to make friends.
01:02:08They're here to make waves.
01:02:10All the way from Hawaii, welcome Tristan and Kamahai Kalama.
01:02:16You better be ready.
01:02:18Woo!
01:02:20Woo!
01:02:24Good to see you guys.
01:02:26Welcome to Garden City, South Carolina.
01:02:29Yeah.
01:02:30You're part of the HGTV Ohana.
01:02:32Oh yeah, we are.
01:02:33Yes, we are.
01:02:34Let's go.
01:02:35Well, it's great to see you all.
01:02:37I can't wait to see what you've done with your living rooms.
01:02:40Mentors, please join your team.
01:02:43All right, gladly.
01:02:44Woo!
01:02:45We are here for you.
01:02:46I saved you a spot.
01:02:47All right, guys.
01:02:48Oh my goodness.
01:02:49Woo!
01:02:50I'm feeling good.
01:02:51You got this.
01:02:52So Angelina and Steven, what has been the most challenging part of your first week on the beach?
01:03:00Don't say me.
01:03:01No, no, no, no.
01:03:03I guess it was trying to have realistic goals versus dreams.
01:03:08I'm a big dreamer and I want a lot to happen, but we only have one week to do it.
01:03:12So that was the biggest challenge.
01:03:15I am a dreamer too.
01:03:16I get that.
01:03:17What about you, Anna and Josiah?
01:03:20I think staying on budget.
01:03:21That budget doesn't go far.
01:03:23This is the first challenge and we really got to make it last for the whole house.
01:03:27He can tell you I struggle with budget too.
01:03:29All the time.
01:03:30I always have to reel her in.
01:03:33Lastly, my mother-daughter duo, Sydney and Michelle.
01:03:36I feel like we both love the design part.
01:03:39So like sharing that is hard and we both have different design styles.
01:03:44So kind of combining those and...
01:03:47Yes, definitely.
01:03:48And communicating with her mentor has been a real struggle at times.
01:03:52This week was all about first impressions and you had the opportunity for a big one with the living room
01:04:01entryway and the stairs.
01:04:03And that's an important set of spaces because the common areas are where people gather and spend the most time.
01:04:09When we evaluate your homes, we'll be looking at booking power, functionality, and design.
01:04:16After we assess your spaces, the winner of this week's living room battle will win $3,000 in cash.
01:04:28That's a lot of money.
01:04:30Sydney and Michelle, we'll kick things off with your house.
01:04:34Let's do it.
01:04:35Fingers crossed, people.
01:04:39Welcome to our house.
01:04:43Look at how cute.
01:04:45I'm sure you guys have done some fishing in your day.
01:04:48Never on the ceiling.
01:04:49This is unexpected in a good way.
01:04:52But this, I am obsessed with.
01:04:56Like, obsessed.
01:04:57She loves picture walls.
01:04:58It's so good.
01:04:59Oh, you do? Okay.
01:04:59This is our state fish.
01:05:01This is our state fish.
01:05:04Such a small name.
01:05:06I would be the bloated, upside-down blowfish.
01:05:08That is hilarious.
01:05:10Yuck.
01:05:10No, I think it's really fun.
01:05:11It ties to the fishing, right?
01:05:13Mm-hmm.
01:05:13It's very coastal.
01:05:14We're on the beach.
01:05:15Yeah.
01:05:15So, let's check out the living room.
01:05:21Oh, my gosh.
01:05:23Look at how many people you could sit here.
01:05:24I know, it's massive.
01:05:25This was definitely not like this.
01:05:27I can imagine.
01:05:28Yeah.
01:05:29I like the amount of seating.
01:05:32We travel deep.
01:05:33Like, I think just the amount of grandkids is close to 20 at this point.
01:05:37Whoa!
01:05:38Yeah, so we need a lot of space.
01:05:40Well, this is what I really like.
01:05:42This isn't the largest space in the world.
01:05:44No, it's not.
01:05:45But they were able to fit so much seating in here, and it doesn't feel cluttered.
01:05:51And I love the fireplace.
01:05:54They installed the brick.
01:05:55You guys know how difficult it is.
01:05:58Yeah.
01:05:58It looks like it was meant to be in the safe.
01:06:00Yeah.
01:06:00It looks great.
01:06:01I love how they whitewashed it a little, so it feels more traditional.
01:06:06I think that built-ins add a lot.
01:06:08Storage.
01:06:09Storage always adds value.
01:06:10It does look to your neighbor.
01:06:11That would be the only thing.
01:06:14So, this blind might stay closed.
01:06:16Right.
01:06:16But from the right angle, from my angle, you can still see the other.
01:06:20They put in these beams.
01:06:22Yeah.
01:06:22The flooring kind of matches the color on the beams, which I like when there's cohesiveness
01:06:27and colorways get tied together.
01:06:29It feels very cohesive.
01:06:31It does.
01:06:32As far as finish goes, there's just tiny paint over here.
01:06:37And then I just see a gap in the beam.
01:06:39It does feel, I don't want to say old, but it kind of feels a little old.
01:06:45Mature coastal cottage.
01:06:47Mature.
01:06:47Well, it's got a little coastal grandma, grandpa going.
01:06:50It's what you're saying.
01:06:50There you go.
01:06:51You said it.
01:06:51You said it.
01:06:52It was mature, and then they teamed up with me.
01:06:54So, you've got sort of immature meets mature.
01:06:57But that is big here.
01:06:58You've got to understand.
01:06:59That is big here.
01:07:01The cool thing about this is it's not just the living room I'm showing you.
01:07:04Okay.
01:07:04We also have a staircase.
01:07:06Oh, let's check it out.
01:07:06Yeah.
01:07:07Come on.
01:07:09So, stairwell upstairs.
01:07:15Look at this wallpaper.
01:07:17They wanted to make sure they put in transoms to give it that old world vibe.
01:07:21Did they put those in?
01:07:22They put the transoms in?
01:07:23Yeah.
01:07:23That is cool.
01:07:24I like that a lot.
01:07:25Yeah.
01:07:25And they're specific to places here.
01:07:27I think it just gives that little bit of character that I almost expect in these homes.
01:07:33It also allows the natural light from the bedrooms to come into this space.
01:07:37That is impressive.
01:07:38I think it's a job well done.
01:07:40I really do.
01:07:41And I also like how this light, I think it's the same or if it's really similar to the one
01:07:46in the living room.
01:07:46One of the first things I noticed, it does feel a little bit empty up here.
01:07:52I think they could have continued the wallpaper or maybe a light fixture over the stairs.
01:07:56Do something fun in the stairwell itself.
01:07:58Something over the stairwell.
01:08:00Yeah.
01:08:00It's darker, so it feels like it's closing the space off.
01:08:05I think we've seen enough.
01:08:06Okay.
01:08:07Why don't you go back down to the beach?
01:08:09All right.
01:08:09Will do.
01:08:09See you guys out there.
01:08:13Let's check it out.
01:08:14Come inside.
01:08:15Come on in.
01:08:16Ooh.
01:08:17Welcome home.
01:08:18It smells good in here.
01:08:20Wow.
01:08:20I mean, are you kidding me?
01:08:25It's so light.
01:08:27Yeah.
01:08:28Great.
01:08:28I absolutely love that.
01:08:30It's airy.
01:08:32We really had a lot of empty space.
01:08:34Okay.
01:08:35In the living room.
01:08:35Okay.
01:08:36And we've tried to still make it feel cozy, conversational, but with a ton of seating that's
01:08:42flexible.
01:08:43Oversight sectional?
01:08:44This is a big couch.
01:08:45This is a big couch.
01:08:45From a color palette, they really wanted just to feel serene.
01:08:49Yes.
01:08:50Yeah.
01:08:50Yeah.
01:08:52This definitely gives you a coastal feel.
01:08:55I do wish that I saw some like pops of color on the wall.
01:09:00Okay.
01:09:00Like in art that mimics like the blues that you put onto the couch.
01:09:06They went out and took all the photography themselves.
01:09:08No way.
01:09:09I said, why you're exploring.
01:09:10Forget it.
01:09:10I love that.
01:09:13I am noticing this light.
01:09:16I know I'm tall.
01:09:17I know.
01:09:18I was like, oh.
01:09:18I'm interested to see if I hit my head.
01:09:22I don't.
01:09:23Don't jump.
01:09:24I don't, but don't know if that would be the light fixture I would have chosen for the space.
01:09:29I don't know if it fits the overall vibe that they were going for.
01:09:33Almost modern and that's not, there's this more coastal beach.
01:09:37Yeah.
01:09:37And I know you said seating and I think you did the best with this space, but for the vacation
01:09:43rental market, we know we need seating.
01:09:46As much.
01:09:47As much as possible.
01:09:48Okay.
01:09:49One of the things we did differently, we made this living room smaller.
01:09:54This whole wall is all new.
01:09:57Okay.
01:09:58So what we've done here is we put in the fireplace.
01:10:00So we really created a focal feature.
01:10:03I'm interested to see what's on the other side of this wall.
01:10:06Because I'm, I want to make sure that the decision you made here makes sense.
01:10:20Wow.
01:10:21Wow.
01:10:23Okay.
01:10:24I think it was a good idea.
01:10:30This is a major value add.
01:10:33Adding a bedroom on the main floor.
01:10:36It's practical.
01:10:38We travel with both sets of parents all the time.
01:10:41All the time.
01:10:41Yeah, so do we.
01:10:42This would get used.
01:10:45And you have a little dry bar here.
01:10:47We tried to do a little dry bar so you could have a little coffee set up in the morning.
01:10:50So nice.
01:10:51And really feel private.
01:10:53Yep.
01:10:54Access to the outside is crucial too.
01:10:57So you've added a whole nother bedroom.
01:11:00Now the question I have is because you did that, the amount of people that are going to be in
01:11:07here, can the living room support that space?
01:11:09Yes.
01:11:11Without a shadow of a doubt.
01:11:13Very sure.
01:11:14She said yes.
01:11:15Yes.
01:11:15Yeah.
01:11:16All right.
01:11:16Follow me.
01:11:18Oh wow.
01:11:20Look at all this wall detail here.
01:11:22Yes.
01:11:26So she took the time to sort of map this all out.
01:11:30A little bit of personality.
01:11:32Yes.
01:11:32Yeah.
01:11:33I can see her label of love.
01:11:35So kudos to her.
01:11:37We did have shag carpet absolutely everywhere.
01:11:40That's crazy.
01:11:40By just pulling all of that up, that was a lot of our budget as well.
01:11:44This lighter palette on the floor, on the walls, it does make it feel new and fresh.
01:11:50I did notice a few craftsmanship issues.
01:11:55A few more hours in a day.
01:11:57Could have done it.
01:11:58Finishing, repainting one final coat would make a big difference.
01:12:01Yeah.
01:12:02All right.
01:12:02I think we've seen all the spaces.
01:12:04Yes.
01:12:04Sarah, you can head back down to the beach.
01:12:06We'll see you guys soon.
01:12:10Come on in.
01:12:12Welcome.
01:12:17Oh wow.
01:12:18Welcome, welcome.
01:12:19The door that we just walked in was originally just windows.
01:12:23One of the big spins in this space was.
01:12:25Was the door.
01:12:26There was no access.
01:12:27Nope.
01:12:28And it's gotta be impact.
01:12:29You know, we're on the beach.
01:12:30So hurricane impact glass.
01:12:31Yeah.
01:12:32Which raised the price a little bit.
01:12:33Yeah.
01:12:34But I feel like we gained some natural light and then we gained access to the outdoor patio.
01:12:39I think that's money.
01:12:40Very well spent.
01:12:41Very, very well spent.
01:12:44I like that they made art.
01:12:46It's wallpaper, but I say it's an art installation.
01:12:49I love the ceiling height.
01:12:52This is definitely coastal modern feel.
01:12:55Leaning more towards the modern aesthetic, which I absolutely love.
01:13:00It does feel more modern than the previous space that we looked at.
01:13:03Oh.
01:13:03I do like.
01:13:04I like that.
01:13:05I do like this.
01:13:07It makes the space feel elevated for a fireplace room.
01:13:10Yeah.
01:13:10The fireplace was here already and they just upgraded.
01:13:14Fireplace was here, but not functional.
01:13:16So they had to replace.
01:13:17Okay.
01:13:18And upgrade because it was very, very dated.
01:13:20Looking at the actual finished work, everything looks good.
01:13:24Well, there's some caulking right here.
01:13:26A little bit.
01:13:27These built-ins on the side, they put those in for sure.
01:13:31Yeah, I like the floating shelves.
01:13:31I would have loved to see if they could find a stain and stain these the same color as the
01:13:36floor.
01:14:05It would have been nice to kind of tie that together.
01:14:06Yeah, they did.
01:14:07Some seats.
01:14:07They know that the main thing is how many people can you get in these houses?
01:14:12Heads and beds.
01:14:13Heads and beds.
01:14:14I do wish I think I saw another couch right here.
01:14:17And then I think those flipped over here.
01:14:19Okay, so that's an easy fix.
01:14:21Yeah.
01:14:22A little flippy flip.
01:14:23Just a little flippy flip.
01:14:24I really like this guy.
01:14:26Yeah, reclaim wood here.
01:14:27We had to get real thrifty with how we spent the money.
01:14:30I love the reclaims feel of it, but I do think it is pretty chunky.
01:14:35I know you said that this took up a big chunk of the budget and I get it.
01:14:40But aside from that, there aren't like a lot of other features in here.
01:14:45There is a couple more little things I want to show you.
01:14:48Show me.
01:14:49All right, follow me.
01:14:50Taking it to the next level.
01:14:52Let's go.
01:14:56A little coastal flare with the camera.
01:14:58Okay.
01:14:59We originally wanted to open all this up, but structurally it didn't make sense.
01:15:02Fensive.
01:15:03Give a little bit more light.
01:15:05Give it a little bit of character.
01:15:06It's definitely interesting.
01:15:08Unexpected and I dig it.
01:15:09I don't know about this.
01:15:11I'm like, is this cold?
01:15:12I don't know how safe it is.
01:15:14That's the only thing.
01:15:15Okay, all right.
01:15:16Fair enough.
01:15:16So this area was just a blank landing.
01:15:20The kitchenette, it services the three bedrooms up here.
01:15:23It's almost like the house technically almost has two kitchens now.
01:15:26She's looking at me because we love this idea.
01:15:30We're staying in a vacation rental right now.
01:15:32It has similar layout and I, we kept having to go downstairs to get water.
01:15:38And Komohai's like, I'm not into these stairs.
01:15:41Yeah.
01:15:42This totally solves that problem.
01:15:44The space for it is like uncanny.
01:15:47It's almost like this was meant to be here.
01:15:50Hits every checkbox.
01:15:52Yeah.
01:15:52100%.
01:15:54And you know, obviously it was kind of a money spend.
01:15:56Yeah.
01:15:57But I think it adds so much value and it's so practical for what we literally just experienced
01:16:02last night.
01:16:03I can't wait to see what they do in the actual kitchen.
01:16:05I mean, I think we saw enough.
01:16:08Okay, you guys.
01:16:09Enjoy.
01:16:10There's a couple bottles of wine in there.
01:16:11I know.
01:16:11I know you've got a long day today.
01:16:13Look, I'm holding the handrail.
01:16:15Yes, you are.
01:16:20Okay.
01:16:22Living rooms.
01:16:23First, we had ties.
01:16:26Because of the amount of thought and attention to detail, you can tell they put into that space.
01:16:31It adds so much value.
01:16:33They're the only ones that put wood beams in.
01:16:36Wood treatment everywhere.
01:16:37They put brick on the fireplace.
01:16:39They painted the trim.
01:16:40I think the doors.
01:16:42Only downside that I can see to that space is it is very specific.
01:16:47I think you called it grandma.
01:16:50Vintage.
01:16:50I said vintage.
01:16:52Then we have Sarah's.
01:16:55The fact that they threw up a wall and added another bedroom.
01:17:00They created a bedroom out of nothing.
01:17:01And the living room actually still felt a decent size.
01:17:07Red more bland than I think that they were hoping for.
01:17:11A pop of color on the wall would have really brought their aesthetic more to life.
01:17:16Yeah.
01:17:17Last we had Mika's.
01:17:20I think the only thing I would have liked to see in that space is maybe the wallpaper running along
01:17:25the whole wall.
01:17:27Yeah.
01:17:29That one felt the most modern I would say.
01:17:32Definitely.
01:17:32But I don't feel like anything captivated me to the point where I'm just like wow.
01:17:38I think we both know who the winner is.
01:17:42Yes.
01:17:43So we're in agreement.
01:17:44We are in agreement.
01:17:45Let's go tell them.
01:17:46Okay.
01:17:51Here come the judges.
01:17:53Yes.
01:17:57Let the judging commence.
01:17:59You all came out swinging.
01:18:01Taking the living room in three unique directions for this week's build.
01:18:04You all should be super proud.
01:18:07But only one team unfortunately can walk away with this win.
01:18:12Sydney and Michelle.
01:18:13When I walked in it felt cozy.
01:18:16It felt inviting.
01:18:18It felt livable.
01:18:19I literally told him.
01:18:21I can tell women were in here working their magic.
01:18:25The attention to detail.
01:18:28You guys were the only ones who threw beams up on the ceiling.
01:18:31I could tell that you were going for Coastal Cottage and I immediately got it.
01:18:36I loved it.
01:18:38The only thing I would say is it could potentially be too specific.
01:18:43So if somebody was looking for a more modern space.
01:18:48That one wouldn't be the space for them.
01:18:51Yeah.
01:18:51Right.
01:18:52Angelina and Steven.
01:18:53Your speed on the Surrey bikes earned you the right to pick your house.
01:18:58Are you happy with your choice?
01:19:00Oh yeah.
01:19:01Oh yeah.
01:19:02Walking into your guys space I immediately felt calm.
01:19:06I love that you committed to your choices of your design aesthetics.
01:19:11But one thing I would have loved to see is your art and that color spread more on the walls.
01:19:18I think it would have actually elevated your space even more.
01:19:22That being said you did make a major change.
01:19:26You split the living room and added another bedroom.
01:19:31Wow.
01:19:32Like what?
01:19:33To the room.
01:19:34Like that's a seasoned move.
01:19:36Kudos to you guys on that.
01:19:37Thank you.
01:19:38Yeah.
01:19:38Anna and Josiah.
01:19:41Walking into your space it felt the most modern.
01:19:45Mm-hmm.
01:19:46I love that I saw quartz on your fireplace.
01:19:49I love the floating shelves.
01:19:50I love that you tried to go bold with the wallpaper and making it an art installation.
01:19:56I may or may not have done bamboo wallpaper myself.
01:20:00The bamboo wallpaper.
01:20:01You were trying to be creative and that really shone through.
01:20:04With that said I would have loved to see your artistic expression taken to another level.
01:20:10Yeah.
01:20:11Maybe that whole wall having wallpaper and then trying to maximize seating in that area.
01:20:19It did feel a little bit small in the space.
01:20:23But when I got to the top of your guys' stairs to see a wet bar installed there I was
01:20:29like what?
01:20:31On the level with all the bedrooms?
01:20:33I mean genius.
01:20:35Genius.
01:20:36Yeah.
01:20:36Yeah you could use a drink by the time you get to the top of the stairs.
01:20:40Yeah.
01:20:43Honestly you guys if these first spaces are any indication of how the rest of the competition is gonna go
01:20:49it's gonna be a wild ride.
01:20:51Seriously.
01:20:51Seriously.
01:20:53We feel really good about our living room.
01:20:55We think the design turned out really pretty and then of course we have our kitchenette on the landing so
01:20:59I think that maybe should give us the win.
01:21:02You all started off really strong this week.
01:21:05It has been a wild ride.
01:21:07We have some stiff competition.
01:21:09To feel like we could walk away with this without any doubts in our minds.
01:21:14Yeah.
01:21:14I don't, I think that's.
01:21:15A little naive.
01:21:16A little naive.
01:21:17But only one team can walk away with the $3,000 cash prize.
01:21:23Giving money away.
01:21:25Everybody's being really really creative but I'm proud of the room that we created.
01:21:29I think we thought outside the box.
01:21:30So the winner of this week's space is.
01:21:48You all started off really strong this week.
01:21:52But only one team can walk away with the $3,000 cash prize.
01:21:57So the winner of this week's space is.
01:22:10Angelina!
01:22:15Congratulations!
01:22:18Yes!
01:22:19We won!
01:22:21We got this!
01:22:21Yes!
01:22:22So exciting!
01:22:23Undefeated!
01:22:23Angelina!
01:22:26This win is very important because we've been going through our own situations, you know,
01:22:31from sleeping on other people's couches.
01:22:33So can I.
01:22:35It's okay.
01:22:37I know.
01:22:41So this money would literally help us be, you know, more comfortable.
01:22:45This opportunity.
01:22:46One in a million.
01:22:47Yes.
01:22:48You don't get this opportunity.
01:22:49We need to keep this winning momentum going.
01:22:51Hey!
01:22:52Hey!
01:22:52Come on!
01:22:54Pretty disappointing.
01:22:54We were very proud of the living room.
01:22:57What do you know?
01:22:58What they say.
01:22:59When one becomes two, it's better.
01:23:02Oh.
01:23:03Do they say that?
01:23:04I don't know.
01:23:05I made that up.
01:23:07Let's go have a drink in our house later.
01:23:10Steven and Angelina did give us that house.
01:23:12We did the best we could with the house we got.
01:23:14Yep.
01:23:15Oh!
01:23:16Oh, I got it.
01:23:18Oh.
01:23:19Congratulations, you guys.
01:23:20You've won the living room battle.
01:23:22The amount of value you added by adding a bedroom is undeniable.
01:23:27That could be the difference in a family booking the space or not booking the space.
01:23:35We could not give you the win for that.
01:23:37Thank you.
01:23:37Thank you.
01:23:38It was a lot of work.
01:23:39I know.
01:23:40A lot of back and forth, but we did it.
01:23:43Thank you.
01:23:44But you didn't think we flew all the way from Hawaii to give you $3,000, did you?
01:23:49This is a brand new battle and we're upping the ante.
01:23:54What?
01:23:55Now for the twist.
01:24:00Angelina and Steven, you have a very important decision to make.
01:24:04This is a game of high risk and high reward.
01:24:08You can walk away with your $3,000 cash prize now or...
01:24:13We'll double the amount and add it to the grand prize.
01:24:17Bringing the overall total to $56,000.
01:24:22That's a tough call.
01:24:23Oh my gosh.
01:24:25How confident are you that you have the skills to win this whole thing?
01:24:29Take a moment to discuss with your teammate.
01:24:32You guys have to...
01:24:33This is a you.
01:24:33This is not a meant for.
01:24:35I'm stepping away from this one.
01:24:37It's your decision.
01:24:39Are you willing to bet on yourselves?
01:24:46It's too early in the game to do that.
01:24:49So I'm going to take that $3,000 right now.
01:24:51I think that's a smart move.
01:24:53I really do.
01:24:54All right.
01:24:55You come and get your $3,000 cash prize.
01:24:58The pot stays at $50,000.
01:25:05Good job.
01:25:06Good job.
01:25:07$3,000.
01:25:08Steven, you got to take your jacket for you.
01:25:10Yeah.
01:25:11One day that'll be us, guys.
01:25:12One day?
01:25:13One day.
01:25:14It's pretty disappointing.
01:25:15I feel like the living room we were very proud of.
01:25:18Yeah.
01:25:18It was a good room.
01:25:19Yeah.
01:25:21I'm losing my spark.
01:25:22I'm losing my...
01:25:23This is the first round.
01:25:29Everyone is here to prove something.
01:25:31I just like, we do all this prep work and we can't even put it in place.
01:25:35They want to win.
01:25:36This is a lot of money on the line.
01:25:37But they also have something to prove to themselves, to prove to their families.
01:25:42Oh, the walls are caving in.
01:25:44I'm just like, I don't know.
01:25:46I need a hug.
01:25:48What's going on?
01:25:49What happened?
01:25:50Bad morning.
01:25:51It could get worse or it could get better.
01:25:54Let me be part of the team.
01:25:56I'm stressed.
01:25:58I think what you're doing is fantastic.
01:26:00My creativity has been challenged, but I'm still confident that we got this.
01:26:08Am I providing marriage counseling too here in this mentorship role?
01:26:14.
