When money gets involved like this, will it be hard for you to still be a fan?

00:02all right we are here on a tuesday gorgeous afternoon we've got a lot of ground to cover
00:09but i wanted to start with something and maybe like six people will care or maybe this is
00:14actually going to be a good conversation this is the ultimate risk it biscuit okay hear me out
00:21all right because i've just endured a pre-show of you and david yelling about doomsday and i
00:27thought you were talking about a biblical event of the world is going to end and you guys were
00:33hyper fixated on if it doesn't happen by july it's not going to happen and i'm like guys am i
00:39missing
00:39the article or like reports world ending and then you're like no we're talking about robert downey
00:47jr and a comic book movie and that's where i told both of you to do something to yourselves and
00:52i
00:52walked away so i i want to recenter because for a solid five minutes you two bickering and i'm like
00:59are these two mfs seriously talking about the world ending like they have a clue no and we didn't
01:05include you because you don't watch the movie so well and also and you're like no no tell me i'm
01:10like
01:10mike seriously you're just gonna make fun of this so no now i understood i because you guys were so
01:16passionate i was like oh my god are they doing like a new testament throwdown is this like summer
01:21slam of nazareth what is this right david come get you jesus whooping well then at the end of it
01:27i talked to evan for two seconds because we were in a meeting and then all of a sudden i
01:32hear you
01:32talk about you don't identify as black anymore and i'm going what the hell just took place
01:37what happened here and obviously you were joking i think but i was just like what because how
01:46you want the real you want the because i told david that i really didn't care for the black
01:52panther 2 movie you're not for the culture he's not black so therefore yeah there's a lot of people
01:57like oh it was like this movie was garbage and then i started pointing out things in the movie like
02:02that would never happen in the comic book world and david's like yeah i know i was like but yeah
02:08but
02:08i've gotten into fights with people like oh no that movie was great like movie was awful so that's
02:16where that came from okay look we're getting somewhere okay we're getting somewhere yeah this
02:20is positive yeah i just i was so no it was we were talking about just the different movies and
02:27i was
02:27just like i didn't really care for the sherry character in the movie and david was like well no
02:32it was just written poorly and i was like well yeah but that's the what they brought to the stage
02:38and i didn't care for it and so that's why it's okay i still believe i criticized it a lot
02:44of people
02:44get angry you're still black in my eyes because you're not allowed to criticize the black panther
02:49movies the first one was okay all right the second one was garbage so i'm gonna try a topic
02:57okay and i don't so doomsday dude you just had me worried i wouldn't even forget about jury duty
03:03or saratoga you were telling me it was all over regardless that's it man then i hear you're just
03:08talking about a movie yes so i want to bring something up and i think it marries real life
03:14with sports because as we often say sports are not real they're just not but i i heard something
03:21earlier and again there's no slander i just i think there were some details left out
03:25and i want to set the stage for this because i i don't think i don't think it was approached
03:31in
03:31in the right way okay and what i mean is this so the mlb the owners put out their first
03:38proposal
03:39salary cap first time since 1994 that that's been a thing so late last night into today the comments
03:47of bruce meyer who is now the mlb pa head because tony clark was too busy allegedly getting
03:55his wick wet um yeah you're kidding me and from the very beginning and this this was a part that
04:01was left out of the discussion today on the station this has not been viewed as a good thing for
04:06peace
04:06for getting a deal done is that bruce meyer is a hardliner that bruce meyer is an attorney he has
04:12no
04:12emotions this is not a former player this is this is someone who is willing to go to war
04:18so meyer comes out and the quotes are they're brutal they're absolutely brutal but they're done
04:26with purpose this was the disagreement i had with the conversation earlier this isn't about you know
04:32this guy flexing and trying to do a blue chew ad no you have to win the court of public
04:38opinion in
04:39labor war because whatever side the public hates more between billionaire owners and millionaire
04:44players is going to win the war he basically said quote i thought they would try harder to make it
04:52look
04:52good and they didn't even do that they've effectively managed to cobble together the worst system for
04:59players in any of major sports and it's not even close so here's the thing and there's look there's
05:09there's more but take that comment there is a very real chance you don't have baseball in 27 it's a
05:17very real chance because the owners want a cap and a salary cap has always been a red line for
05:23players
05:25the owners are as serious about it as ever because you basically have 25 owners feeling one way and five
05:31feeling another okay from a player standpoint while the floor helps the cap hurts i'm only doing this
05:42not because as evan so eloquently put it like six people care about labor discussion the only time
05:49labor discussions were popular is when the world stopped and we were broadcasting from basements what a
05:54time to be alive but i want to relate it this way with everything going on in the world today
06:04as a
06:05normal human being let's say you're out in metro detroit you're married you got a couple of kids
06:11look the odds are life's not very easy right now and why i bring this up is this it's always
06:17been a
06:18folly for leagues to think that people who are struggling to figure out how they're going to pay their
06:23mortgage are going to have their hearts bleed for players or owners and money it's not going to
06:31happen that's why 1994 was so debilitating to baseball they didn't have a world series people
06:38walked away and it took steroids and comic book going to relate it to your pre-show discussion comic book
06:46home run numbers to bring people back now 30 years later we're here baseball feels like it's on good
06:55footing okay i'm not saying great i'm not saying it'll ever be the 1950s again but it's on good
07:01footing a lot of young talent a lot of visibility you have the global approach to the game and what
07:08otani has helped bring cool rico here's my question and it's a question to you guys in listener land
07:15all right if baseball locks out or goes on strike if baseball is not around next year do you even
07:25have
07:25the bandwidth to care because i'll say it again to you and there are a ton of people out there
07:32in full
07:33struggle mode through no fault of their own the same job that they work the same paycheck that they
07:38made it's not keeping up with the cost and where people are at and what's going on right right do
07:45you
07:45really think that that average guy who currently likely hates most of his life right now is going to
07:51give a flying f about millionaire baby players and billionaire baby owners see i want to maybe the best
08:00way for me to put it is this i've never felt like the average fan is more disconnected from the
08:06sports
08:06that they loved than now you always joke about this with college sports this isn't a blame rico thing
08:13a lot of decisions can be about money there's got to be a small space a little dessert menu for
08:19love of
08:19the game for rivalries for emotion for health of the game if you're an average fan right now what do
08:26you
08:26hear about sports that isn't involved with just money just money college sports has been upended
08:33for one reason money baseball is probably not going to have a 2027 why money the nfl's ripping games away
08:42from sundays why money i can't talk about the nhl they ain't got no money yeah they don't
08:51no here's the funny thing you brought this to my attention a couple weeks ago and it's sad
08:59because it's true there is only one thing that i can think of right now in sports that really has
09:05nothing to do with money just pure entertainment and that's that whole little savannah banana tour of
09:12baseball great that they actually just care about the people and they want you to come out there
09:18and the people are flocking to us so much they have to have a lottery they just can't just say
09:22everybody can come because it'll be sold out is it a is it like a 1.5 million person waiting
09:28list
09:28did i hear that right something ridiculous so much so that if you actually want to go to savannah
09:33to watch them play at home you have to buy tickets years in advance that's how popular it is so
09:41i know that
09:42this is not you know a this or that topic it's a little deeper than that but i find it
09:49a i i wanted
09:50to set the record straight on what's actually going on with the the mlb fronts here and bruce myers not
09:56just pimping and the owners aren't faking this is this is going to be pretty messy and there's a real
10:02chance you have a deeply impacted or canceled season next year as a fan your relationship with sports
10:10where the world is today where your life is today you probably feel more disconnected let's be fair
10:17i don't know that sports has been more unreachable at any point in history for the average fan than
10:23right now the average guy can't take his family of four to a lions game can't do it you're talking
10:28about a mortgage payment no i mean the only thing that you see is occasionally when a place will have
10:33like a menu and they'll be like hey you know what we'll give out dollar hot dogs or we'll do
10:37right
10:38this and it's very small but even when they come out and say hey we're gonna have brand new jerseys
10:44we're gonna do this well you got to go pay for that jersey you got to go pay for that
10:48hat sure we
10:48talked about it like if a kid wanted a world baseball classic jersey it was 400 bucks and it didn't
10:53show up
10:53until the wbc was over um but i i think still it technically still wouldn't be there if baseball goes
11:01away are you gonna be there when it returns or are you just at a point where you go you
11:06know what
11:06i'm burnt out i'm burnt out that everything is money everything no decisions are made for the good
11:13of any sport it's just money you're right uh i don't know like where you were when the baseball
11:21strike in 94 happened like it broke like i felt bad for montreal because you didn't feel bad for me
11:29it was gonna be yankees expos in the world series thanks a lot well i mean i didn't know
11:33how young mikey was in baseball 13 okay i was in the prime of my life okay okay all right
11:39so yes
11:40you didn't even like girls at that point it was just baseball it's just no man it it but yes
11:45it was
11:45it was heartbreaking because i remember looking at that expo team like that team is loaded
11:51larry walker vlad randy pedro randy they had wasn't it marquise grissom was on that team
11:59moise salu yes oh baby they were loaded that team was loaded and it just fell apart because i remember
12:06nike ran commercials when it first happened it was like this loser at a ball empty ballpark and he was
12:12like i'm just gonna stay at this park until baseball comes back and every day he was doing something
12:16different around day 40 they pulled the plug on that ad because it wasn't coming back no and as
12:22you said they it took cheating and it took looking the other way and all of a sudden people started
12:28caring about baseball thanks to the bonds and sosa summer right but i mean mcguire and sosa but it
12:34took baseball turning a blind eye to rampant cheating yes think about that yeah now think about where we
12:39are the marketplace has never been more competitive for people's attention yeah all of a sudden what
12:43jeff bagwell's hitting 50 plus home runs oh boy ken caminiti 248-539-9797 are you gonna sit and wait
12:52for baseball or are you at a point where you know what i've had enough of these billionaires and
12:57millionaires quarreling in all sports i've had enough getting used i've had enough that i gotta buy
13:018 million streaming platforms i've had enough that the tickets to go to a game have never been more
13:07expensive the apparel's never been lower quality and more expensive finding games more expensive
13:13yeah the fact that you can't do a super bowl or nba finals because you can't buy nick's tickets
13:20good luck with that no you're dead you got no shot 248-539-9797 here's rico
