00:00:20From inside Tropicana Field in Tampa Bay,
00:00:23the show brings you a matchup of division rivals.
00:00:26It's the Toronto Blue Jays taking on the Tampa Bay Rays.
00:00:31John Shambi alongside Chris Singleton and Sigi,
00:00:35we're gonna see a nice little win streak put to the test today.
00:00:38Yeah, these guys are really firing on all cylinders right now.
00:00:41And to me, the important thing is that they're doing the little things well.
00:00:45They're not just relying on home runs or big plays every game.
00:00:48They're playing good situational baseball, executing in key areas,
00:00:53and that's how you string together wins.
00:00:55So we'll see if they continue that in this one.
00:01:00And towing the slab, Shane McClanahan.
00:01:03And Sigi, it's unique these days, but he's more of a pitch to contact type of guy.
00:01:08Yeah, Boogie doesn't rely too heavily on the strikeout.
00:01:11He knows he needs to miss barrels, get some soft contact, let the defense do work behind him.
00:01:17And I think a guy like that can keep a good tempo.
00:01:19Don't give hitters time to adjust or think.
00:01:22They can move through a ball game and you look off.
00:01:25They're in line for a quality start.
00:01:26We'll see what he's got in this one.
00:01:28Foul ball there.
00:01:36Line drive and this might be trouble.
00:01:41Around first, heading for two.
00:01:43And he's there with a leadoff double.
00:01:49He got that front foot down and pitch recognition was on point.
00:01:53Pretty impressive for an 0-2 count.
00:01:57Runner in scoring position.
00:01:59No outs.
00:02:00Here's Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
00:02:02And that drops in for a strike.
00:02:04The Rays are looking very strong so far this season.
00:02:09In the dirt and that's ball one.
00:02:12Yeah, you mentioned how well they play Boogie and I think it's a sign of things to come.
00:02:17You don't win as frequently as they have by accident.
00:02:21Got him swinging for the carry.
00:02:23Not what you're looking for after the leadoff double.
00:02:26A strikeout and there's one away.
00:02:28All right, let's take a look at the lineup.
00:02:30Someone who makes things happen for them in part with his legs.
00:02:34Miles Straw.
00:02:35Big time speed here Boog.
00:02:37A guy with just terrific wheels and an absolute nightmare for opposing pitchers when he's on base.
00:02:43I mean players like this who have elite speed.
00:02:45It's like disruptive technology on the base pass.
00:02:49Man, can't wait to watch him run.
00:02:51Diaz takes it to the bag.
00:02:53Out.
00:02:53Number two.
00:02:57Batting fourth, center fielder Dalton Farshaw.
00:03:00And now it's Dalton Varshaw.
00:03:02And this is a big opportunity for him to pick up his teammate right here.
00:03:07That one finds the zone.
00:03:09That strike one.
00:03:10He must have been looking for something else because he gave up on that pitch a little early.
00:03:13It was right down Main Street.
00:03:15Probably not going to see a better pitch to hit in this at bat.
00:03:18Two outs and a runner a third.
00:03:20Here in game one of this three game set.
00:03:23Ripped to short.
00:03:25Over to Diaz.
00:03:27That is the inning.
00:03:28Now it's the Rays' turn.
00:03:30No score.
00:03:30You're watching Major League Baseball on the show.
00:03:38Ready to go for the last half of the inning.
00:03:41And the starter for Toronto, Eric Lauer.
00:03:44Tell us about him in that sub three ERA singing.
00:03:47Well, anytime you can keep your ERA under three, you're doing a lot of things right.
00:03:52And you're putting your team in a position to win a lot of ball games as well.
00:03:56And he's doing tremendous out there on the mound.
00:03:59Every time he gets the ball, you expect him to go out there and dominate.
00:04:02And that's what he's been to this point.
00:04:04We'll see how he is today.
00:04:10Got the bat going too soon at strike two.
00:04:14Lauer goes six feet, three inches, 210 pounds.
00:04:18Oh, a former first round pick back in 2016.
00:04:27And I want two.
00:04:31That's a base hit.
00:04:34Solo runner aboard to start the inning.
00:04:37Well, a swing like that can help you come out of this struggle.
00:04:40And we saw the numbers coming into the ball game.
00:04:43But all he's trying to do at this point is help his team win.
00:04:48Yandy Diaz now.
00:04:50Fourth in the American League in batting average this year.
00:05:06The 0-1.
00:05:09Ripped, but it curls foul.
00:05:16Arunda gets his lead at first.
00:05:18Nobody out.
00:05:23Swing and a pop off in foul ground.
00:05:29Okamoto takes it in for the out.
00:05:32One down.
00:05:37Betting third.
00:05:38Third baseman, Junior Camonero.
00:06:04Swing and a ball driven pretty well out towards left center.
00:06:08He makes the grab.
00:06:12Throw behind the runner.
00:06:14And they've got him doubled off.
00:06:16First frame of the night behind us.
00:06:18And it's nothing, nothing.
00:06:24On now to the top half of inning number two.
00:06:27And now for the Jays, Kazuma Okamoto.
00:06:35There's a strike.
00:06:46Hard liner.
00:06:47And that's got extra bases written all over it.
00:06:53And he starts off the second with a double.
00:06:57Really good swing right there.
00:06:59He got a pitch that he knew he could handle.
00:07:01Allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer.
00:07:04And he hit the ball on the screws.
00:07:06Runner in scoring position now.
00:07:08And a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game.
00:07:13The bit behind with that swing.
00:07:15It's strike one.
00:07:23And this one squirts away from the catcher.
00:07:26The throw to third.
00:07:28Okamoto up to third on the wild pitch.
00:07:30Well, that right there can be a tough read as a runner on second to see if the ball's gotten
00:07:34away enough to move to third.
00:07:36You have to be sure you can make it because you're already in scoring position.
00:07:40Well, he was base hit.
00:07:43And the Jays score first.
00:07:44First, it's one zip.
00:07:48And he's in to second with nobody out.
00:07:51Well, he's trying first as he gets the job done to bring home the run.
00:07:54Loud contact leads to the double.
00:07:57I mean, you could tell it had extra bases written all over it as it jumped off of his stick.
00:08:03Runner in scoring position.
00:08:04No outs.
00:08:06Here's Andres Jimenez.
00:08:08And immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter.
00:08:17That's a ball.
00:08:22Runner in scoring position.
00:08:24Nobody out.
00:08:25Here at the top of the second.
00:08:26Brown ball up the middle.
00:08:27That's a base hit.
00:08:29Schneider headed for the plate.
00:08:30The throw in.
00:08:31He'll score easily.
00:08:33And they lead by two.
00:08:35Comes through with the RBI.
00:08:37Tying in on the swing was good.
00:08:38Able to shoot the ball up the middle.
00:08:40Didn't square it up as much as he probably would have liked.
00:08:42But that's a good approach paying off.
00:08:49There's a line drive to left field.
00:08:51Makes the grab.
00:08:59Batting ninth, second baseman, Leo Jimenez.
00:09:03One out man at first.
00:09:04Here's the second baseman, Leo Jimenez.
00:09:08Seems like he's making contact with everything lately.
00:09:11Can make it a five-game hitting streak with a knock in this one.
00:09:16The old one.
00:09:18Swings through that one out in front that time.
00:09:25Chopped to first.
00:09:26And he handles it himself for the out.
00:09:32Up next for the Blue James right fielder, George.
00:09:36He's on the verge of a milestone.
00:09:38His next home run will be the 300th of his career.
00:09:43That one at the knees for a strike.
00:09:45You know, the 300 homers would be an amazing achievement for him.
00:09:48Fewer than 200 players have ever done it.
00:09:52Hit 300, you tie Chuck Klein.
00:09:54Hit 301, you tie Rodgers Hornsby.
00:09:57I can't wait to see if he pulls it off.
00:10:01And it's second.
00:10:03And a big swing and a miss.
00:10:09Gets a piece there.
00:10:11We'll do it again.
00:10:18Swing and a high fly ball.
00:10:19Well struck.
00:10:20That's got a chance.
00:10:22And it's off the wall.
00:10:24Jimenez scores.
00:10:25And they take a three-run lead.
00:10:30Picks himself up at RBI.
00:10:32Anytime you smoke a ball off the wall, you kind of think about what it could have been.
00:10:36But obviously, you have to be happy with that result.
00:10:44And first offering is fouled off.
00:10:52Man on second, two down.
00:10:54Ripped to third, but handled, and that'll end the inning.
00:10:58Well, he was ready to make a move.
00:10:59I don't know if his eyes were open when he made that catch, but it is a highlight play.
00:11:04Great job of ending the inning.
00:11:12Back here at Tropicana Field, and stepping in for the Rays, Johnny DeLuca.
00:11:18Johnny DeLuca.
00:11:22The 3-0 lead is great, but you can't get too comfortable.
00:11:26Got to stay aggressive, keep attacking hitters, try to cruise through this ball game.
00:11:32And that one wrapped foul.
00:11:44And that one ripped to left.
00:11:46That's a hit.
00:11:47Man aboard on the leadoff single.
00:11:49I'd say a mistake pitch in an 0-2 count.
00:11:52Too good of a pitch to hit right there.
00:11:54You have to expand the zone.
00:11:55Keep that leadoff man off first base.
00:12:11And that gets the inside corner for a strike.
00:12:21Not the best swing that time from the first round pick.
00:12:25I think he was sitting off speed there.
00:12:34Field two.
00:12:36Swing and a miss struck him out.
00:12:38That he stood absolutely no chance on that slider right there.
00:12:42And I don't mean to laugh, but that's a tough one.
00:12:44I mean, pretty much a perfect strikeout pitch.
00:12:47I mean, it looks like a fastball middle in.
00:12:48Kind of has cutter action, and it just bunches you up to where you can't get your hands through
00:12:53and the barrel to it.
00:12:54And not much you can do unless you recognize the spin early and you spit on it.
00:12:58Chandler Simpson batting with one down.
00:13:01Takes a strike.
00:13:03Step off throw to first.
00:13:05DeLuca dives back in safely.
00:13:14And now the 0-1.
00:13:17Swing and a ball popped in the air.
00:13:19That's a base hit.
00:13:20Lead runner around second.
00:13:22The throw to third.
00:13:23He's in there.
00:13:25Good start for him to this ball game tonight.
00:13:27And I always talk about get a knock in your first lead bat.
00:13:30It just makes your confidence.
00:13:32It's such a higher level for the potential to have a big night.
00:13:38Right through there for a strike.
00:13:42Brothers at the corners.
00:13:44One away.
00:13:45Bottom half of inning number two.
00:13:51Pulls that one foul.
00:13:54You know, he can move the ball around, add and subtract, get some weak contact at times.
00:14:00So you don't worry as much about him in this situation.
00:14:04Very capable of getting a ground ball and getting out of this little jam.
00:14:15Got him swinging.
00:14:19Batting eighth catcher, Dominic Degen.
00:14:22Here's the catcher.
00:14:23Trying to pick up his first knock in the big leagues.
00:14:31Rolled over to third.
00:14:33Okamoto.
00:14:34Over to first.
00:14:35And the inning is over.
00:14:37So the Rays strand the pair.
00:14:40They trail in this one.
00:14:41Three nothing.
00:14:46All set for the start of the inning.
00:14:47And now for the Jays, Alejandro Kirk.
00:14:55No, that's a ball.
00:15:02Way inside gets out of the way.
00:15:12They're struggling with their timing on the off-speed stuff.
00:15:14Sometimes you freeze when you realize it's not the fastball.
00:15:17And you're stuck trying to figure out what it is.
00:15:20Next thing you know, it's a strike by you.
00:15:22To the right side.
00:15:24Diaz takes it himself.
00:15:26Lead off man retired here in the third.
00:15:28And here's a look at how he's using his pitches in this one.
00:15:31And here's a look at how he's using his pitches in this one.
00:15:52Base back center field.
00:15:57So they get a man aboard with a one out single.
00:16:01Up next for the Blue Jays, third baseman.
00:16:04And next for Toronto, Kazuma Okamoto.
00:16:21Hit on the ground.
00:16:22Might be two.
00:16:24Williams.
00:16:24Over to second.
00:16:26Double play.
00:16:26And that'll do it for the inning.
00:16:28One hit in the inning, but no one left.
00:16:31We head down to the home half of inning number three.
00:16:34It's the Blue Jays three.
00:16:36The Rays nothing.
00:16:37It's an AL East back shop here on MLB The Show.
00:16:43Welcome back.
00:16:44And coming off a series where the pitching was outstanding.
00:16:48We take a look at those numbers.
00:16:50We all need a minute.
00:16:51The party been started.
00:16:52We all just need a finish.
00:16:54If I buy a chain, I'm doing it by myself.
00:16:56Lauer back to work.
00:16:58No.
00:17:06That pitch started in and ended up on the outside edge.
00:17:11Just changing planes and very difficult, especially for a left-handed hitter to track.
00:17:15Outside corner.
00:17:17There's a strike.
00:17:25Got him swinging for the strikeout.
00:17:28And he's registered three K's in this one.
00:17:31He had him out in front, which isn't easy to do against a hitter like this, known for using the
00:17:35entire field.
00:17:36Just couldn't sit back long enough on that one.
00:17:52And he grounds one to the right side.
00:17:55Guerrero steps on the bag and two straight set down to begin the bottom of the third.
00:18:00For the race, first baseman, Yandy Diaz.
00:18:04So next to the plate for Tampa Bay, Yandy Diaz.
00:18:08He popped out his first time.
00:18:27That's too low.
00:18:28And now it's even one and one.
00:18:38Swings through that one for strike two.
00:18:53Good eye right there.
00:18:55A really good take, especially with two strikes.
00:19:10He checks that one out to left.
00:19:12It's his eighth home run of the year.
00:19:15And they're chipping away.
00:19:17It's 3-1.
00:19:19He's been so difficult to pitch against lately.
00:19:22It seems like no matter how you attack him, he finds a way to punish you.
00:19:31Knew what pitch he wanted to hit.
00:19:33Spent on some other pitches in this.
00:19:35Pass it bad, was very patient, and it paid off.
00:19:49That's the ball.
00:19:53That's the ball.
00:19:53Two down bases empty, but one run across here in the last half of the third.
00:20:08Well struck right field.
00:20:10That one back.
00:20:13Onto the track, and he makes the catch.
00:20:17The Rays creep closer, thanks to the homer.
00:20:21Onto inning number four.
00:20:22This is Toronto Blue Jays baseball on the show Canada.
00:20:29Welcome back as we take a peek at the starting pitching so far this year.
00:20:53Swing and a bouncer.
00:20:55No, no, no, no, that's foul, that's foul.
00:21:00The 0-2.
00:21:04On the ground to third.
00:21:07Sends it to first.
00:21:09That's the first out in the top of the fourth.
00:21:11A piece for the Blue Jays shortstop, Andres Jimenez.
00:21:23No, that's low.
00:21:41He holds it in, two away.
00:21:48Up next for the Blue Jays, left fielder, Myles Strong.
00:21:54Two down bases empty, so up next for Toronto, Myles Strong.
00:22:01And it's foul away.
00:22:05Strong, 31 years old, usually in center field, but today starting in left.
00:22:13Swing and a ball hit out towards left center field.
00:22:16It gets down, a base hit.
00:22:18Two, a two out knock keeps the inning alive.
00:22:27Well, some people think this is no big deal, but I think when you consider the longer throw.
00:22:33Oh, runner on the goal, pitch is low.
00:22:36And that's a stolen base, not even close.
00:22:40Two outs is a great time to try to steal second, especially when you have a guy with some wheels
00:22:44on first.
00:22:45Defense probably knew it was coming, but figured we better focus on trying to get this hitter out.
00:22:50Man, it's second.
00:22:53In the dirt, to third, tag, save!
00:22:56He's in the third of the wild pitch.
00:22:59He just hasn't had it in this one, been fighting himself out there, and that's just another example of it.
00:23:04We'll see if he can find it at all while he's still out there.
00:23:14That clips the zone, that is strike two.
00:23:21Up the middle.
00:23:23To first, it's short hops in, but a nice pick for out number three.
00:23:28Blue Jays held in check, as the lead remains 3-1.
00:23:34Back here at the ballpark, let's check out the latest news from around the league.
00:23:48He's looking great so far.
00:23:50It helps with over 80% of your first pitches are strikes.
00:23:53He might be able to go the distance if he keeps this up.
00:23:59Next offering is fouled back.
00:24:12Foul ball still 0-2.
00:24:24Strap him out looking, and that's four strikeouts.
00:24:32Up next for the race, shortstop Carson Williams.
00:24:45The Blue Jays up by two.
00:24:48We're here in the bottom of the fourth.
00:24:52Just missed with that backdoor breaking ball.
00:24:55If he gets a swing and miss or called strike 0-2 Cal, instead it's 1-1.
00:24:59Look for him to go back to that pitch later in this at bat.
00:25:01Fastball for a strike.
00:25:13This to center field.
00:25:16Pulls it in on the run, and there are two outs.
00:25:20That's a really nice play ranging back into the outfield for that catch.
00:25:24We all know those can be a little tricky, especially if the wind's rolling around out there.
00:25:29And stepping in for the Rays, Chandler Simpson.
00:25:36Lifted in the air down the left side, and that'll get down for a hit.
00:25:40Joey gets on base and keeps it going.
00:25:44Up next for the Rays, second baseman.
00:25:47He was a strikeout victim his first time.
00:25:55That one's in there, and that is strike one.
00:26:05Tap foul at the plate.
00:26:11Simpson off of first with two away.
00:26:19That misses.
00:26:20Now one and two.
00:26:21Pretty standard high 0-2 fastball right there.
00:26:24If you're smart, you'll look for something down in the zone, but not too far.
00:26:28Don't want to chase that breaking ball in the dirt.
00:26:32The 1-2.
00:26:34Keeps the impact going with a foul ball.
00:26:48Had a good eye there.
00:26:59Fouls it back with two strikes.
00:27:11Swing and a miss for the strikeout.
00:27:13He picks up his fifth strikeout on the hill.
00:27:16One hit, one left.
00:27:17We're headed to the fifth.
00:27:19It's the Blue Jays three, the Rays one.
00:27:22It's an AL East matchup here on MLB The Show.
00:27:31Welcome back as we take a look at how today's starting pitchers have fared so far.
00:27:49And first offering is fouled off.
00:27:52Well, these Blue Jays doing a good job of putting the ball into play, and that makes
00:27:56things more challenging on the defensive side.
00:27:58One thing that really stands out to me is how they've only struck out one time.
00:28:02That's good discipline right there.
00:28:04And on top of it, they're producing more than a hit per inning.
00:28:15The 1-2.
00:28:19Here's a high chopper.
00:28:22Williams tosses to first, and the lead offense set down, and they're half of the fifth.
00:28:26Up next for the Blue Jays.
00:28:28First baseman, Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
00:28:40All those numbers mean this offense is really making the defense work by just putting the
00:28:45ball into play.
00:28:46Anything can happen at that point.
00:28:49In the air to left center, Simpson on the move to the alley.
00:28:54Pulls it down, and he makes the catch.
00:28:56And there's two away.
00:28:59Up next for the Blue Jays catcher.
00:29:02In steps the man they call Captain Kirk.
00:29:05Has grounded out a couple of times.
00:29:13Swing and a foul straight back.
00:29:17Two down, nobody on, and we're at the top of the fifth.
00:29:32Stays alive.
00:29:41Brings it in for the third out.
00:29:44Blue Jays go down in order, and the score stays 3-1.
00:29:53We head to the bottom of the fifth, and now the catcher for the Rays, number 48.
00:29:57And there's one thing on his mind, this at bat, getting that first hit at the big league level.
00:30:02Misses off the inside.
00:30:04Ball one.
00:30:05Blue Jays bullpen with some action.
00:30:07Max Scherzer up and loosening in the pen.
00:30:10Number 62 warming up as well.
00:30:13The 1-0.
00:30:25Lined in the left center.
00:30:27Should be extra bases.
00:30:29Now he'll turn for second.
00:30:32And his first big league hit is a double.
00:30:36Number 48 with his first major league hit.
00:30:39And this is a moment I'm sure he'll never forget.
00:30:42Congrats.
00:30:44Yeah, great moment for him and his family.
00:30:46A guy works so hard and has to wait so long for this to happen.
00:30:50And when it does, it can kind of be overwhelming, Boog.
00:30:53You still have to stay locked in on the game, but it's great when you can take a minute to
00:30:57just appreciate what you've done and how hard you've worked to get here.
00:31:02Gets the call.
00:31:04Strike one.
00:31:05Man.
00:31:05I mean, nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was.
00:31:14This one in the air center field.
00:31:17Two minutes.
00:31:18Should have this one.
00:31:19And there's one down.
00:31:20That's a tough play for the infielder ranging back into the outfield.
00:31:24There's part of them that's saying, hey, where do you have an outfielder?
00:31:26Call me off.
00:31:27But he stayed focused and made a nice catch right there.
00:31:34So the Rays batting order turns over.
00:31:37Now it's the DH, Jonathan Aranda.
00:31:42And immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter.
00:31:49And now the tying run comes to the plate.
00:31:53Last half of inning, number five.
00:31:57And now it's the one-one.
00:31:58And now it's the one-one.
00:32:11Misses the zone and he gets him to chase.
00:32:14Man, that was pretty gross right there.
00:32:22Fouls it off.
00:32:23Still one and two.
00:32:26Runner at second here.
00:32:28One gone.
00:32:33In the air right field.
00:32:35Pretty well struck.
00:32:37Carrying well.
00:32:39Going on.
00:32:43The two-run shot and they tie it up.
00:32:47It's 3-3.
00:32:58A good hitter gets pitch recognition early.
00:33:01He saw exactly where that was going to be.
00:33:03The challenge, not get over anxious and come out of your swing.
00:33:07He stayed on it and got all of it.
00:33:09Here comes the manager out of the Blue Jays dugout.
00:33:11And he will make a move to the pen.
00:33:13Eric Lauer will depart.
00:33:15And he's not going to be happy with himself.
00:33:18New pitcher on the mound in a moment.
00:33:21Out of the bullpen for the Jays, Max Scherzer.
00:33:26Well, they didn't get much length out of their starter in this one.
00:33:28So they've got a lot of outs to eat up in that bullpen.
00:33:31I think they'll look for some length out of him right here if they can get it.
00:33:52Swing and a miss.
00:33:53And it's 0-2.
00:33:55Scherzer, multi-time All-Star.
00:33:57He features a four-seam fastball, a slider, a changeup, a curve,
00:34:02and occasionally uses a color.
00:34:05He dives, but he can't make the catch.
00:34:08So a man aboard now with one away.
00:34:10You know, I was watching his rounds during batting practice today.
00:34:13So impressed with his ability to let the ball travel,
00:34:16go back up the middle and the other way.
00:34:18Sometimes when you step in the box during the game,
00:34:20you get a little anxious and you get away from that.
00:34:22But so far, I've seen him stay consistent with his pregame preparation.
00:34:29Next to hit, Junior Caminero.
00:34:31And there's a strike.
00:34:35One away.
00:34:36Tie game.
00:34:37Go ahead, run stands at first.
00:34:44Little dribbler up along third.
00:34:46Off balance feed.
00:34:48Here's one.
00:34:48Double play.
00:34:49What a twin killing day in the inning.
00:34:52The Rays with a two-run homer.
00:34:54We're tied now with three apiece.
00:35:02Welcome back.
00:35:03It's been a great game.
00:35:04So let's take another look at the most important moment so far.
00:35:07So let's break into time.
00:35:08Let's go to the Super Bowl.
00:35:15Let's break into time.
00:35:18Let's break into time.
00:35:29Let's be.
00:35:37And here is Dalton Varsho.
00:35:40Center fielder Dalton Varsho.
00:35:53Ball a stake right here could
00:35:55untie this ball game.
00:35:56If you're the pitcher out there
00:35:57you just want to be a little
00:35:59more cautious.
00:36:03Grab ball up the middle.
00:36:05Lux the throw to first.
00:36:07Just got him on that one.
00:36:09At next, David Lujo's third
00:36:12baseman, Kazuma Okamoto.
00:36:21Woo!
00:36:30Back to the mound.
00:36:31He's got it.
00:36:34Throws to first.
00:36:36Two quick outs to open the top
00:36:37of the sixth.
00:36:39Up next for the Blue Jays,
00:36:41the designated hitter.
00:36:43Next is the designated hitter,
00:36:44Davis Schneider.
00:36:51Right!
00:36:53Right!
00:36:59And ball one.
00:37:08That one in there
00:37:10across the letters.
00:37:18Just missed.
00:37:20Good spot there
00:37:21but didn't get the strike.
00:37:28Knees and doesn't seem
00:37:29too convinced
00:37:30by the call out there
00:37:31on the mound
00:37:32as he tries to get
00:37:33a better sense
00:37:33of the umpire strike zone.
00:37:35Pitch misses
00:37:36and the count's full.
00:37:38Two down,
00:37:38nobody on
00:37:39and we're in the top
00:37:40half of the sixth.
00:37:42Fights it off,
00:37:43he'll see another.
00:37:45Another.
00:37:52Got it.
00:37:53And this is that.
00:37:56On to the bottom
00:37:57of inning number six.
00:37:59Tied three apiece.
00:38:06Well we go bottom six
00:38:08and stepping in
00:38:09for the Rays,
00:38:10Johnny DeLuca.
00:38:17Johnny DeLuca.
00:38:20Max Scherzer
00:38:21back to work.
00:38:24Toronto's bullpen
00:38:26with some action.
00:38:27Jeff Hoffman,
00:38:28the hard-throwing righty
00:38:29is up and loosening.
00:38:30Rogers also getting ready.
00:38:36Let's go.
00:38:38That's high.
00:38:46Gets him to chase
00:38:47after that one.
00:38:55Swing and a miss
00:38:56and that's strike two.
00:39:04Scherzer gets the punch out.
00:39:06One up, one down.
00:39:07Wow, just great bite
00:39:08to that slider.
00:39:09Broke hard out of the zone
00:39:11and he just couldn't
00:39:11hold up the swing.
00:39:12You know, as a hitter,
00:39:13that pitch is really hard
00:39:15to take and there's just
00:39:16not much you can do with it.
00:39:18You know that,
00:39:18but you don't want to get
00:39:19rung up by the umpire.
00:39:25On the ground,
00:39:25right side.
00:39:28Guerrero,
00:39:29the toss to first
00:39:30and there's two down.
00:39:31Up next,
00:39:32for the Rays,
00:39:33left fielder,
00:39:35Chandler Simpson.
00:39:36next to hit for the Rays.
00:39:37He's two for two.
00:39:46Oh!
00:39:51All tied up here
00:39:52in the bottom of the sixth.
00:39:58Popped up.
00:40:00Jimenez under it
00:40:03and makes the grab.
00:40:04And that is that.
00:40:06Rays go in order.
00:40:07One, two, three.
00:40:08Six innings are in the books.
00:40:10Score holds at 3-3.
00:40:17Now pitching for the Rays.
00:40:19Ryan Baker
00:40:19will take over here.
00:40:21This guy's a strike thrower.
00:40:22He's done an excellent job
00:40:24of avoiding walks
00:40:25so far this season.
00:40:28Leading off for the Blue Jays,
00:40:31shortstop,
00:40:31Andres Jimenez.
00:40:34And he bunts,
00:40:35but that's a foul ball.
00:40:41Drilled out towards
00:40:43left center field.
00:40:44That's well struck.
00:40:46And that one hops the wall.
00:40:49In safely
00:40:50with a leadoff double.
00:40:51Go-ahead runs
00:40:52in scoring position.
00:40:53Everything came together for him.
00:40:55Now a good opportunity
00:40:56to potentially jump ahead
00:40:57in this game
00:40:58here in the later innings.
00:41:06And a swing and a miss.
00:41:08There's that slider.
00:41:13Breaking ball
00:41:14and that got him.
00:41:16Up next
00:41:17for the Blue Jays.
00:41:18Now it's the second baseman,
00:41:20Leo Jimenez.
00:41:21He's grounded out
00:41:23a couple of times.
00:41:27And that's in there
00:41:28for strike one.
00:41:29Really good job
00:41:30in this spot
00:41:31to get ahead in the count.
00:41:32He's going to have to continue
00:41:33and finish off this hitter.
00:41:36Here's a swing
00:41:37and a drive
00:41:37left field
00:41:38and he knew it.
00:41:44A three-run homer
00:41:46and they jump in front
00:41:47in the seventh.
00:41:49It's 6-3.
00:41:50You're not going to be able
00:41:51to wipe the smile
00:41:52off his face
00:41:53for a while, Boog.
00:41:54He just changed the game.
00:42:13A slider right down
00:42:14the middle of the plate.
00:42:15It's like slow motion
00:42:17for a hitter.
00:42:17You're just licking
00:42:18your chops
00:42:19waiting for it to arrive
00:42:21and you want to hit it
00:42:22a long way
00:42:23and he did.
00:42:27And in the back
00:42:28of his mind
00:42:29he's got to be thinking
00:42:30about home run
00:42:31number 300.
00:42:32He's sitting on
00:42:33299 right now.
00:42:37You'll want
00:42:39Baker.
00:42:39It is fourth year.
00:42:4131 years old
00:42:42and they went out
00:42:43and made a trade
00:42:44wait for him
00:42:44last season.
00:42:56In the air
00:42:57foul off first.
00:43:01Takes it in
00:43:02for the out.
00:43:04It's a good recovery
00:43:05though after giving up
00:43:06the home run
00:43:07not allowing it
00:43:08to stay in the head
00:43:09but going to work
00:43:10at the next hitter
00:43:11and a tough one
00:43:12at that.
00:43:30And foul ball.
00:43:35Already three runs
00:43:37across in the frame
00:43:38here in the top
00:43:39half of inning
00:43:39number seven.
00:43:41Up the middle
00:43:42and he knocks it down.
00:43:45Not in time.
00:43:46Great effort
00:43:47but it's an infield hit.
00:43:52Alejandro Kirk.
00:43:59Next up
00:44:00for the Blue Jays.
00:44:08Guerrero
00:44:09leads off first
00:44:10with one away.
00:44:18Got a missing
00:44:19that's a strikeout.
00:44:20Well he went up there
00:44:21trying to be aggressive
00:44:22that's for sure
00:44:23hacking at those
00:44:24first two pitches
00:44:24but clearly that
00:44:25last one fooled him.
00:44:27He could have been
00:44:27sitting on something
00:44:28else entirely
00:44:29but you want to be
00:44:30able to adjust
00:44:31on 0 and 2
00:44:32and at least get a
00:44:33swing off when it's
00:44:34in the zone.
00:44:34Maybe choke up
00:44:35maybe spread out
00:44:36your stance a little bit.
00:44:37You got to give the
00:44:37guy credit on the
00:44:38mound though.
00:44:39He went right after
00:44:40it.
00:44:47In the dirt
00:44:48throws to second
00:44:50save.
00:44:51Save he's in.
00:44:52And now
00:44:52a man into scoring
00:44:53position.
00:44:54Heads up
00:44:55base running
00:44:55right there.
00:45:05Man on second
00:45:06two down.
00:45:07In there at the knees.
00:45:09It's a ball
00:45:09and two strikes.
00:45:11He'll challenge
00:45:12thought that was a ball
00:45:13and the strike
00:45:14is overturned
00:45:15after review.
00:45:16They'll keep their
00:45:17remaining challenge.
00:45:22Next offering
00:45:23misses.
00:45:24Ball three.
00:45:24This doesn't seem
00:45:25to want to throw
00:45:26him a fastball.
00:45:30Swing and a miss.
00:45:31Now three and two.
00:45:33Phil could change
00:45:33up right there.
00:45:34Just pulled the string.
00:45:38Knocks that one away
00:45:39and we'll do it again.
00:45:46And it's second.
00:45:48This one in the air
00:45:50center field.
00:45:51DeLuca gets under it.
00:45:53And that's the third
00:45:55out.
00:45:57Three run shot for the
00:45:59Jays this inning.
00:46:00It's now six three.
00:46:03It's an AL East matchup
00:46:04here on MLB The Show.
00:46:13Back here in Tampa Bay
00:46:15and stepping in for the
00:46:17Rays.
00:46:17Gavin Lux.
00:46:25out there to center
00:46:28and a quick out number
00:46:29one.
00:46:31up next for the Rays.
00:46:33Catcher Dominic Keegan.
00:46:36He's one for two so far
00:46:37in his day.
00:46:55The Jays leading by three.
00:46:57Here at the bottom of the
00:46:58seventh.
00:47:00The Jays leading by three.
00:47:15Swings and misses.
00:47:16Now two out.
00:47:17Well, that's the moneymaker
00:47:19right there.
00:47:20Two strikes slider down
00:47:21and away from a same side
00:47:23thrower as the hitter.
00:47:24I mean, that's just tough.
00:47:25You're looking to protect
00:47:26with two strikes and very
00:47:28difficult to lay off.
00:47:36Strike one.
00:47:47Swing and a ball ripped
00:47:49out towards right center
00:47:50field.
00:47:50That'll touchdown for a hit.
00:47:57He was all over that one.
00:48:00So much a good hitting is
00:48:01finding holes in the defense.
00:48:03That's why you're always
00:48:04thinking line drive into the
00:48:05gap.
00:48:06Those kinds of swings really
00:48:07boost your confidence.
00:48:10Now, Jonathan Aranda.
00:48:24You'll want.
00:48:26Oh.
00:48:40So here's Scherzer.
00:48:43Swing and a miss.
00:48:45And a count.
00:48:46One and two.
00:48:54Waves at the bender for the
00:48:55strikeout.
00:48:57One left for Tampa, and
00:48:59they're still doubled up.
00:49:01It's six to three.
00:49:06Welcome back and a new arm on the
00:49:08mound to start the eight.
00:49:10Ian Seymour.
00:49:11Well, he's been hit pretty hard
00:49:12at times this season, as you see
00:49:14with the big ERA.
00:49:15So this is an important outing for
00:49:17him to get on the right track.
00:49:18Blue Jays.
00:49:19Third baseman, Kazuma Okamoto.
00:49:24That one fouled off.
00:49:36And that's in there at the
00:49:37knees for a strike.
00:49:39Really good cutter that he's
00:49:41able to front door and back
00:49:43door.
00:49:43That pitch is devastating.
00:50:11And a fastball in there for a
00:50:13strike at 91.
00:50:18comes up empty.
00:50:19That's strike two.
00:50:26Swing and a ball popped up.
00:50:32Two away down.
00:50:38Up next for the Blue Jays.
00:50:40Two outs, space is empty.
00:50:42Andres Jimenez.
00:50:43Next up for the Blue Jays.
00:50:53Outside low.
00:50:54And the count is one and one.
00:51:01The one one is fouled off.
00:51:08Two down.
00:51:09Nobody on.
00:51:11And they'll do it again.
00:51:12And they'll do it again.
00:51:21Battling here as he fouls it away.
00:51:32Ground ball right side.
00:51:34He takes it himself to the bag and that'll do it.
00:51:38Nothing doing for the Blue Jays, but they still lead it 6-3.
00:51:48Back down, new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth, Jeff Hoffman.
00:51:52And he's certainly been one of their better relief pitchers this season.
00:51:56The numbers are really solid, so they feel great about handing the ball over to him.
00:52:00First baseman, Jandy Diehl.
00:52:08I'm impressed that he went right after him on that first pitch.
00:52:11That's the key.
00:52:12Try to get ahead in the count, and you can play around a little bit more as the bat expands.
00:52:20And he'll one.
00:52:25point.
00:52:28Point.
00:52:32Point.
00:52:45Point.
00:52:46Point.
00:52:47Point.
00:52:52got him one gone to the bottom of the eight and he'll be beating himself up on
00:52:56the way back to the dugout got a pitch to hit and just couldn't get to it I
00:53:00think that slider really caught way more of the plate than it was supposed to
00:53:18the Blue Jays leading by three you're the bottom half of the eighth inning
00:53:26swing and a miss Hoffman a former all-star he features a foreseen fastball a slider
00:53:34a splitter and he works in a sinker strike three and that's two in a row very strong
00:53:40coming out of the pen so far as he punches out the first two batters he's faced in
00:53:44this we're getting straight to work man it's talked about a lot but relievers
00:53:48are just so electric these days he's not fun at bats if you're a hitter I'm so
00:53:53glad I'm retired DeLuca in the box with two gone it takes a look at a called
00:53:59strike
00:54:06on the ground two minutes to first three up three down ending over it's the Blue Jays
00:54:14six and the Rays three
00:54:19back now in Tampa Bay and now for the Jays
00:54:22mile strong that one hammer but pulled foul
00:54:29the 0-1
00:54:31that one to first
00:54:34Diaz takes it to the bag now one gone in the ninth
00:54:38up next for the Blue Jays second baseman Leo Jimenez
00:54:50going an 0-0 count not every strike is a good strike for a hitter I like the plate discipline
00:54:56there
00:55:09and now it is two
00:55:11fights that went away still wanted to
00:55:18That's foul off to the right side, keeps the A.B. going
00:55:27On the ground to the left, and it goes just foul.
00:55:31Now he's desperately looking for that swing and miss.
00:55:34He's going to have to just change speeds a little bit, try to move it around,
00:55:38create just a little bit of illusion at the end.
00:55:41Got him.
00:55:41That's the second out.
00:55:45And it'll be George Springer to step to the plate.
00:55:48George Springer.
00:55:53Foul ball.
00:56:00Two down, nobody on.
00:56:03There's a line drive to left field.
00:56:05And that is that.
00:56:08Down in order go the Blue Jays, as they're unable to add to their 6-3 lead.
00:56:17Tommy Nance, on to try and close it out.
00:56:20Oh, he's the guy they hope to turn to out of the pen to lock down wins.
00:56:23So this game has gone to plan, more or less.
00:56:26Let's see if he can wrap it up here.
00:56:31And leading off for the Rays, shortstop, Carson Williams.
00:56:55The 1-0.
00:56:56And there's the ball.
00:56:57When you get ahead in the count, there's no doubt that the success rate goes up.
00:57:02And that's what he's been doing.
00:57:03It's made a big impact for him in recent games.
00:57:12In the air, right field.
00:57:15Springer takes it in for the out.
00:57:17And there's one down.
00:57:40The Jays trying to close out a three-run lead.
00:57:43Here, the last half of inning number nine.
00:57:50Next offering is fouled back.
00:58:03Breaking ball, and that got him.
00:58:05Take it back.
00:58:07Up next for the Rays, second pass.
00:58:09Here's the bottom of the ninth one.
00:58:11Here's Gavin Lux to hit.
00:58:130 for 3 on this one.
00:58:22It's so important to get ahead of these hitters.
00:58:24You don't want to issue a free pass and allow that tying run to come to the plate.
00:58:27I always want to keep that other team in a position where if they're going to beat you,
00:58:30they're going to have to do it with multiple hits.
00:58:33Here comes the 0-1.
00:58:35In the air, left field.
00:58:39He's got it.
00:58:40He's got it.
00:58:48Up next for the Rays, catcher.
00:58:52He's 1 for 3.
00:58:53Picked up his first major league hit earlier.
00:58:56Well, there's no time for him to be reflective right now, but you know he will be later on.
00:59:00The pressure's off a little bit with that first knock out of the way, though.
00:59:04But he's going to steal second.
00:59:06You want him to go early in the count.
00:59:08That way he's not a distraction to the hitter at the plate.
00:59:10Go ahead and get it out of the way so the hitter can focus on the pitch.
00:59:16On the ground right side.
00:59:19Throw to first.
00:59:20Ball game.
00:59:21And the Blue Jays add another to their winning streak.
00:59:25Well, when you reel off eight wins in a row, you're this close to double digits.
00:59:29And now all of a sudden, it's a challenge within a challenge to get two more wins to get to
00:59:35ten.
00:59:35But there's definitely a high level of confidence that this team is playing at right now.
00:59:39And that's one of those things.
00:59:40You don't want to rock the boat.
00:59:41You don't want to disturb things.
00:59:43Make sure the clubhouse is giving you the same good food it's been giving you all along.
00:59:46And you can keep this win streak going.
00:59:486-3 our final score.
00:59:50For Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB The Show, I'm Jon Shambi saying so long.
00:59:57Yo no todos vamos a cobrar.
00:59:59Estuvio abajo, me patearon, no me voy a olvidar.
01:00:17Si la prendo moloto man.
01:00:19Estamos aquí, todos los míos están on go
01:00:24Todos los míos on go
01:00:28Ellos me ven de frente sonriendo
01:00:31Pero sé que están odiando andolos
01:00:34Todos los míos on go
