00:00Controversial changes to private health insurance rebates are set to be debated in Parliament.
00:05The Albanese Government plans to cut the higher rebate for those available over 65.
00:11The move is expected to save around $3 billion.
00:14Under the proposal, those between 65 and 69 would lose 4 percentage points from their
00:20rebate.
00:20Those aged 70 and over would lose 8 percentage points, reducing their rebate to the same
00:26level currently available for those under 65.
00:28The cuts would apply to singles earning less than $101,000 a year and families earning
00:35less than $210,000 a year.
00:38Higher income earners are already excluded from receiving the rebate.
00:42Health Minister Mark Butler says those over 65 would pay an extra $226 to $250 extra a
00:49year on average.
00:50The Government also estimates around 44,000 people could drop private health insurance
00:59altogether.
01:00The legislation is expected to be introduced later this year, with the Government aiming for
01:05the changes to take effect from April 2027.
