From hailstorms in the northern Plains to flooding downpours in Texas, the first week of June is hitting the central U.S. with multiple storm risks.
Transcript
00:00Let's take a look at what's going on in the central U.S.
00:02We're under the threat for more severe storms this week.
00:05And look at the big hail there in some of the areas around Nebraska.
00:09Big storm impacts over the weekend.
00:11This occurred in southwest Nebraska,
00:13and it was captured by our own AccuWeather meteorologist and storm chaser, Tony Lawback.
00:18Man, look at that low visibility with that hail combined with very heavy rain.
00:22He's been out in numerous cases over the past few days
00:27and will continue to be chasing some of these severe storms there in the high plains.
00:31Now, as we look at Tuesday, looking ahead to Tuesday,
00:35and I know in some of our other updates we're focusing more on tonight's risk,
00:39but let's move a little farther down the line.
00:40I want to get deeper into the week and even talk about some flood concerns down into Texas
00:45and other parts of the south as the week comes to a close.
00:48So looking ahead to Tuesday, western parts of North Dakota, western South Dakota,
00:51and a little bit of eastern Montana, northeastern Wyoming under our two out of four
00:56moderate risk for severe weather, but there's some threat all the way down to Denver.
01:00Isolated tornadoes are a concern, but the bigger threats are going to be damaging wind and hail yet again.
01:05So, again, this whole zone, the western plains peppered by storms,
01:09not just tonight as we've been discussing, but looking ahead to Tuesday, this next episode.
01:14Here they are.
01:15Some of these will be severe.
01:17Rapid City and the Black Hills.
01:19This is Tuesday evening.
01:20Some of these even to the west near Glendive, Montana, near the Montana-North Dakota line could be nasty.
01:24And then some scattered action near Denver that could lead to flight delays there as well.
01:28Looking farther down the line, here we have Wednesday.
01:30More storms.
01:31We take half a state step east, so the eastern Dakotas facing some of the Wednesday risk.
01:37And then look at these storms popping over western Kansas down into the southern plains
01:41into parts of Texas as well.
01:42Those will be cause for concern regarding flash flooding.
01:45And then into Thursday, it sort of fills in into the central plains
01:49with the orientation of these disturbances coming right across Kansas and more of Nebraska.
01:53So Tuesday, we have a 2 out of 4 moderate risk.
01:57We're looking at damaging winds, isolated tornadoes, and hail.
02:00Moderate on AccuWeather's 4-tiered scale is 2 out of 4.
02:03So Williston, North Dakota, Minot, North Dakota, mainly just west of Bismarck,
02:07Glendive, Montana, near the state line, and then Spearfish, South Dakota,
02:13just northwest of Rapid City, facing some of the bigger hazards there.
02:16So wind and hail will again be our main concerns, but there's some risk for localized flash flooding,
02:22and the tornado threat will still be present as well.
02:26Wednesday, I mentioned kind of like a half a state east.
02:29So instead of the western Dakotas, it becomes the eastern and north central South Dakota area.
02:34Fargo's probably the biggest city in our 2 out of 4 risk here for Wednesday.
02:38Moderate risk, hail, damaging wind, downpours.
02:41Let's take a more zoomed-in view to Fargo specifically just to illustrate on Wednesday afternoon and evening
02:47how you could see a couple of storms in the afternoon, but the greater threat's going to be into the
02:52evening.
02:52Look at that, 6, 7, 8, 9 p.m.
02:54Fargo, damaging wind and hail, the biggest concerns here, 2 out of 4 on our scale.
03:00And then Thursday, the risk doesn't go away.
03:02It just kind of resets, again focusing a little farther west,
03:06but there will be a little bit more action, numerous thunderstorms on the map into the plains.
03:10But from Billings to Rapid City down to North Platte, Scotts Bluff,
03:13and areas just east of Denver, a sum risk for that time frame.
03:18At the same time, farther south, we're getting peppered by showers and storms in the eastern half of New Mexico.
03:24Ruidoso comes to mind as one area of concern, a little bit east of White Sands National Park,
03:30western parts of Texas into the Panhandle.
03:32And then as we get into the end of the week and the beginning of the weekend,
03:36attention shifts a little farther east.
03:38This is a stubborn ridge of high pressure, kind of a familiar scene.
03:42Remember, we've been in this drought.
03:43We've been resistant to rain, unfortunately, in some of these areas.
03:46Well, that's reestablishing, and that's going to focus the thunderstorm zone
03:49at the risk of flash flooding Thursday through Sunday into the southern plains once again.
03:54Flash flooding, locally damaging wind, and some drought relief for only some.
03:58As a result.
