00:00La domanda sorge spontanea, questo è il suo primo musical, perché ha scelto un remake e perché poi West Side
00:07Story?
00:30And Tony Kushner must get a lot of credit, he adapted the original Broadway stage musical into our current film,
00:40as a writer, and Tony was very, very particular to make the characters much deeper, much more interpersonal, much more
00:50complicated, because people are complicated.
00:54And I just want to say that we have been actually in production on this for months. The choreography, the
01:00dance rehearsals, the music. We've all been doing this with Gustavo Dudamel and David Newman, conducting the New York Philharmonic
01:07Orchestra.
01:09You need to sorry work, getting everybody primed and ready to sing these great songs, as great as anybody who's
01:15ever sung them.
01:18But now, to actually bring all those elements together, as one voice, into an ensemble.
01:25Rachel, questo è il suo primo ruolo e comincia con un musical esplosivo diretto da un grande regista come Steven
01:33Spielberg. Come sono andate le cose?
01:36It's the most, it's the craziest thing. I never imagined this for my life, truly. Not even when I was
01:42in the thick of auditioning, not even when I was shaking hands with Steven for the first time, did I
01:47ever imagine this as a possibility for myself.
01:50And a lot of that has to do with the fact that I never saw a movie like ours growing
01:54up, in the sense that I never saw myself on screen.
01:57I never saw my people represented in such a respectful, positive way.
02:01So, getting to be a part of this is a dream come true that I didn't even know, a dream
02:05realized, a dream discovered, and I don't take it lightly.
02:09I think the hardest part was trying to find out where the emotion behind Maria's character was coming from.
02:17Where were the stakes? Because this character has never been written this way before, and a lot of the reason
02:23my performance, I think, stands on its own from any other kind of Maria before is because of Tony Kushner's
02:31script.
02:31You know, it's not all one person, it's not all me, it's not all Steven.
02:35It's so many things that come together to make such a beautiful character, and I'm very proud of who Maria
02:40is in this 2021 adaptation.
02:55There's a place for us, somewhere, a place for us.
03:21Miss DeBose, she interprets an iconic Anita in this West Side Story.
03:25Can I say, wonderful, at least like the original of Rita Moreno?
03:29Thank you, thank you, I appreciate that.
03:32You know, I think Anita is, you know, one of the greatest roles ever written, period.
03:40And, you know, to be tasked with bringing her to life is, it was, you know, an incredible challenge, but
03:48one that I was so excited to take on.
03:50I'm a triple threat.
03:52I love to sing, dance, and act, breathe fire at the same time.
03:56And so this experience is nothing short of a joy for me.
04:01And also being able to present a completely different perspective.
04:05I'm Afro-Latina.
04:06I look, I sound, I am very different from Rita Moreno.
04:11So it's really nice to offer the audiences a different take.
04:15This is a very relevant story.
04:19One of your own kind, speak to your own kind.
04:23To the times we now live in.
04:27I'm just so proud and honored that I got this shot late in my career.
04:33I've been able to tell this story directly based on the 1957 Broadway musical.
04:39Go!
04:45I'm so proud to be here.
04:53This story is also a political film.
04:56Do you think all these topics like racism, margination, violence in the streets,
05:02have a greater weight today?
05:05Yes, no, I think, I think that's part of what makes this film so timely and important.
05:10The reality of the situation is this film takes place in 1957.
05:15And yet, as you say, these very things that you're seeing on your screens, they're still happening.
05:21And you know what?
05:22I feel like when I first saw the film, I was like, wow, it's really violent.
05:26He did not shy away from the violence.
05:28But I was like, when you take a look at what's going on in the world, violence is rampant.
05:34Some way.
05:42There's no chance.
05:47.
