00:11A gang runs its territory through shady dealings, terror, and a precise code.
00:21Break this code or defy the criminal gang and your fate is sealed.
00:31Especially for one of the most ferocious motorcycle gangs in history, the Mongols Motorcycle Club.
00:40The stories chronicle the rise of this fearsome criminal gang.
00:46In the first, the Mongols wage a brutal war in California against the Hells Angels.
00:52They were killers, they were willing to do anything.
00:57In the second, an ATF agent risks his life to infiltrate the gang.
01:03He said, if I put a bullet in your head, no one will know where to look for you.
01:09Finally, the bloody clash with the historic rivals reaches its climax in a crowded casino.
01:16It was carnage, so much blood, so much chaos.
01:21Here are the stories of the Mongols Motorcycle Club.
01:25This is Criminal Gangs.
01:27The Dark Chronicles.
01:361969.
01:38Montebello, California.
01:42Police face a new threat on the streets of Los Angeles.
01:48They are a motorcycle gang known as the Mongols.
01:52The Mongols formed at the height of the Vietnam War.
01:58Some veterans miss the adrenaline rush of combat.
02:02Where could they find her again?
02:06Being a criminal was the closest thing.
02:12Many returning veterans in California seek to join the state's most notorious motorcycle gang.
02:20The Hells Angels.
02:23But some of them are denied access.
02:28It is said that the Hells Angels did not accept them because they were Latino.
02:32So the new criminals form their own gang.
02:37The Mongols.
02:39Their logo warns the world.
02:45It depicted Genghis Khan on a chopper.
02:50It represented who the Mongols were.
02:53Violence as a way of life.
02:56He said, this is who we are.
03:00We returned from the war.
03:02Do you want another one?
03:03After you!
03:06In the 1970s, gang members collected convictions for motorcycle thefts.
03:11Arms trafficking and assaults on anyone who opposes them.
03:18Anger is fueled by their drug of choice.
03:23They were always high on meth and never slept.
03:27Soon they are not just using it, but they are selling it.
03:33In the late 1970s, California police estimated that a single kilo of drugs had a street value of
03:40over $11,000.
03:41Almost $60,000 in today's money.
03:45For the street market, distributing those drugs was really profitable, because there was a queue of customers.
03:54The gang traffics drugs through new chapters springing up throughout Southern California.
04:00Creating a multi-million dollar criminal enterprise.
04:06With the Mongols expanding into California, it is only a matter of time before a war breaks out with the
04:14'another criminal gang in the state.
04:17The Hells Angels.
04:20A war for territory.
04:261977.
04:28The Mongols add the word California to their logo.
04:35It was an affront to the Hells Angels to reclaim territory.
04:40Not only did they seek to be the dominant motorcycle gang in the territory, but also the most powerful in drug trafficking.
04:48drug.
04:49The Hells Angels demand that the Mongols remove the California sign.
04:54They were Vietnam veterans, they were tough and ready for anything, they would not give up.
05:00So they replied, come on.
05:04The feud between the two gangs comes to a head on Interstate 15 in California.
05:12September 5, 1977.
05:15Two Mongols, Raymond Jingles Smith and Emerson Redbeard Morris, head south from Los Angeles.
05:25They were driving back to San Diego from a Mongols event when a car pulled up alongside them.
05:33What happens starts a war.
05:41September 5, 1977.
05:46Southern California.
05:48A suspicious car pulls up alongside two Mongols members who are driving on the highway.
05:54Gingles and Redbeard were on Interstate 15 toward San Diego.
06:05A car approached and someone fired a machine gun.
06:10They both died.
06:15The Hells Angels declare all-out war on the Mongols.
06:24There were constant car explosions and gunfire.
06:31There has been a back and forth for years.
06:36We blew each other up.
06:40During the conflict, the Mongols follow a single order.
06:44If you find one of the Hells Angels somewhere, you have to kill him.
06:51But this ruthless policy draws unwanted attention to the ball.
06:58January 17, 1982.
07:01Lemon Grove, California.
07:05A group of Mongols, including Scott Junior Erikson, are at the Horseshoe Tavern.
07:14Erikson notices a man with a distinctive ring.
07:18A death skull, worn only by Hells Angels.
07:23He was not of low rank.
07:25It was the Surgent at Arms in San Diego.
07:28Raymond Fett Ray Pills.
07:31Erikson sees his chance.
07:33And he comes closer to kill him.
07:36During the fight, Erikson's gun fell to the ground.
07:46Junior Erikson shot and killed him on the spot.
07:51Junior Erikson pleads guilty to manslaughter.
07:58But there are repercussions.
08:01Killing Fett Ray in a crowded bar draws a lot of attention.
08:05And both gangs have plenty of reasons to want to avoid it.
08:10The Angels were a major criminal organization.
08:15And the Mongols were no exception.
08:21So, the Angels tried to come up with a plan
08:25and negotiate a truce with the Mongols.
08:29The Hells Angels step back on the California sign.
08:33as long as the Mongols stay in Southern California
08:37and do not expand into Angels territory.
08:41You don't drive through Northern California without repercussions.
08:45The truce keeps the Hells Angels at bay
08:49and the money keeps coming in.
08:55But in the 90s the Mongols have a new target on their backs
09:00that they can't see.
09:10March 1998, Los Angeles.
09:15ATF launches Operation Ivan
09:17infiltrating one of his agents into the Mongols
09:20to destroy the gang.
09:24The Mongols were involved in the production and distribution of drugs
09:28in arms trafficking and many violent crimes.
09:32Agent Billy Quinn infiltrates the group.
09:35I had infiltrated under the name Billy St. John.
09:39It took me months to get accepted
09:42why can't you just walk up to them and say
09:45"Hi, how are you? I want to be one of you."
09:50Quinn knows what she risks if her cover is blown.
09:54They would have taken care of the matter by killing me.
10:00A month later, Quinn is sent to a motorcycle rally in Nevada.
10:09Where he sleeps with one of the Mongols named Rocky.
10:15He took his big Bowie knife,
10:18he cut the bag and made two strips of Matt on the table.
10:23He put the knife in front of my face and said to me
10:26“That stripe is too much for you.”
10:30ATF agents are not allowed to take drugs,
10:33even if infiltrated,
10:36because this could invalidate the case in court.
10:38But if Billy refuses,
10:41he risks blowing his cover inside his beard
10:45and be killed.
10:51April 1998.
10:54To the undercover agent, Billy Quinn,
10:57is offered methamphetamine by one of the Mongols.
11:01If he refuses to take it, he risks being killed.
11:07Quinn has to think fast.
11:10I managed to roll up a banknote,
11:13bend over on the strip,
11:15pick it up with your hand and throw it on the ground...
11:19without Rocky realizing it.
11:23He patted me on the shoulder.
11:26Come on, yeah, let's have some fun, buddy.
11:29A few months later,
11:31Quinn takes a big step forward.
11:33The President of the San Fernando Valley Chapter
11:37he told me
11:38Billy, we want you to join the Mongols.
11:41But I had to prove to them
11:43that... that I knew...
11:46shoot.
11:47But upon arrival at a remote shooting range,
11:51the Mongols' National Sgt. At Arms,
11:55Donald Red Dog Jarvis,
11:57confront Quinn.
11:58Red Dog looked at me and said
12:01“You’re a fucking cop!”
12:05I replied, “No, you’re wrong!”
12:09Then he said, "If I put a bullet in your head now,
12:14no one will know where to look for you.
12:16Do you know, Billy?
12:19I replied, “Yes, Red Dog!”
12:22And then he said, “Go set up the targets!”
12:25Quinn continues to keep calm.
12:29«I have endured all that I had to!»
12:33And his efforts, in the end, pay off.
12:39October 1999.
12:41After six months of high-risk work,
12:44Billy Quinn becomes a full-fledged character
12:46a member of the San Fernando Mongols
12:48and, unexpectedly,
12:51he is given an important role.
12:54One day the president told me
12:56«You will become an officer,
12:59you will be the secretary and treasurer."
13:01As treasurer,
13:03Quinn will have full access
13:04to the accounting records of the Mongols.
13:07The books showed their criminal activities,
13:12drug trafficking, arms trafficking
13:15and motorcycle theft.
13:16For six months,
13:17Quinn gathers detailed evidence
13:19against the Mongols.
13:21As long as the law enforcement agencies
13:23they can make their move.
13:28May 19, 2000.
13:32Shortly after dawn,
13:33700 officers raid
13:35in the Southern California sections.
13:3954 Mongols are arrested
13:42for crimes ranging from traffic
13:44of drugs and weapons to murder.
13:47Thanks to his work,
13:49the section was dismantled,
13:51leadership overthrown
13:52and the group indicted and convicted.
13:56Arrests decimate the Mongols' ranks.
14:00But instead of marking the end of the band,
14:03the group begins to intensify recruitment.
14:08The international president was Doc Cavazos
14:12and in addition to normal recruitment
14:14pushed for the creation of a section
14:17in Northern California.
14:19But this doesn't go down well with the former rival gang.
14:23The Hells Angels were angry
14:26because we were starting to move north,
14:28in their territory.
14:31This violates the terms of the agreement.
14:34between the Mongols and the Hells Angels.
14:37So after 20 years of relative peace,
14:40the two gangs go again
14:41towards a showdown.
14:51April 27, 2002.
14:56Laughlin, Nevada.
14:58Around 80,000 motorcyclists
15:01they invade the city for the annual gathering
15:03River Run Motorcycle Rally.
15:06Among them are dozens of members
15:08both of the Mongols
15:09that of the historical rivals,
15:11which is Hells Angels.
15:16At two in the morning,
15:18in the Casino Arras,
15:20a clash is being prepared
15:21between 40 Mongols
15:23and 60 Hells Angels.
15:26People started to worry
15:29seeing these two groups
15:31who were staring at each other
15:32with hostility.
15:34There was tension.
15:36We knew something was going to happen.
15:39The Mongols and the Hells Angels
15:41I'm a hair's breadth away
15:42from reigniting a war.
15:50April 27, 2002.
15:55Laughlin, Nevada.
15:5840 Mongols face
16:0060 Hells Angels
16:01in a crowded casino,
16:04ready to start a fight.
16:08The gang leaders
16:10they make one last attempt
16:11to defuse the situation.
16:15When the Hells Angels
16:17they entered Eras,
16:19they tried to talk
16:21and confront the Mongols
16:23to calm things down.
16:27We were talking
16:28and everything was fine.
16:32until
16:34one of the Hells Angels
16:35he didn't throw a kick
16:37and the fray began.
16:48At the Erras Casino
16:50the fight rages.
16:52It was chaos.
16:54It's total chaos.
16:58The violence
17:00It grows rapidly.
17:03There weren't enough
17:05security officers
17:06to stop them.
17:08On both sides
17:10they take out their knives
17:11and they show no more mercy.
17:17The guns appear
17:19and the bullets fly.
17:26The Eras
17:27it's time
17:28a war zone.
17:33While the two gangs
17:35they fight,
17:36the people present
17:37in defense
17:38they are repaired
17:39where they can.
17:43It was a massacre.
17:45There was a lot of blood.
17:52The Mongols
17:54there were fewer of them
17:55they defended themselves.
17:56They reacted.
17:59There are only defended.
18:03Among the Hells Angels
18:05there are two deaths
18:06for gunshots.
18:08While Anthony Bronson
18:10Barrier
18:11of the Mongols
18:12he dies stabbed.
18:17and later
18:19they died
18:19other people too
18:22on the way
18:23of the injuries reported
18:24which was not the case
18:25made known
18:26Why
18:26it hadn't happened
18:27right at the casino
18:28but after.
18:31The clash
18:32at Eras
18:32rekindle the war
18:34among the Mongols
18:35and the Hells Angels.
18:37a conflict
18:39which continues
18:40even today.
18:41if today
18:42they meet
18:43two members
18:44of the two bands
18:45the clash begins
18:46but that's how it is.
18:49It's a thing
18:50big
18:50if too much rubble
18:5250 years
18:53of clashes
18:53continue
18:54they'll never solve it.
18:57every time
18:58it can cost

18:59to someone
19:00you never know
19:01if they will extract
19:02the weapons
19:03and if you can find yourself
19:04in a conflict
19:05like that
19:05by Loughlin.
19:08Today
19:09Despite
19:10the commitment
19:10of the forces
19:11of the order
19:12the membership
19:12to the Mongols
19:13continues to grow.
19:15To 2023
19:17it is estimated
19:18the affiliation
19:19of approximately
19:191200 members
19:20in the sections
19:21scattered
19:22for the United States.
19:25They are
