00:01Last week, we left you with the glitz and glam, the pageantry, the chaos, and of course, the glory.
00:11Here comes Rosenquist! Malukas defiant! Who has it? It's Rosenquist!
00:16What a car! What a cruise! What a race! What a race!
00:22This week, it's all still here.
00:29Just with a little more edge, a little more grit, a little more Detroit.
00:37Nestled in the heart of Motor City, we're not just racing, we're dueling through concrete canyons.
00:45It's time to take control of the season and seize what's yours.
00:50This is more than a race. This is a reckoning.
00:55Welcome to Detroit.
01:02Well, good afternoon and welcome to Detroit Sky IndyCar fans.
01:07Just seven days ago, IndyCar delivered a finish for the ages 500 miles, three hours of racing, and in the
01:16end, the Indy 500 was decided by the narrowest margin in its history.
01:23The celebrations were unforgettable, the disappointment was crushing, and yet, as is so often the way in this championship, there
01:33has barely been time to process any of it, because IndyCar moves on from the vast stage of Indianapolis to
01:43the unforgiving streets of downtown Detroit.
01:49Phoenix Rosenquist, the man on your screen, the man of the moment, we all thought his chances had gone on
01:59the exit of turn two, as the two Meerschank machines raced side by side.
02:13It was that run, out of three, through the short, to four, that gave him the run.
02:29Red 12, you just won the Indy 500. You just won, buddy.
02:34I honestly think I'm in a dream.
02:39An incredible race, an astonishing finish, and we get to go racing again just seven days later.
02:46Welcome, folks, to Detroit, and I don't know about you, Townsend and James, but I'm only just getting my breath
02:51back after that thrill ride.
02:53I don't think we will ever recover from that.
02:55The closest finish in Indy 500 history, but it's the way that it finished.
02:59Now, Felix Rosenquist hails from Sweden.
03:02He brought all of that Viking courage, but he declared to the world hero stuff last Sunday.
03:08Unbelievable. I'll never forget it.
03:10And what a privilege to not just be in the building to witness it, but to be part of the
03:13broadcast that brought it to everybody.
03:15So cool to not just see the record be broken for closest finish, but like you say, what's going to
03:19go down among drivers, fans alike, as maybe the greatest final lap in Indy 500 history.
03:25We've had 110 of them.
03:26I don't know how we could beat that one.
03:28It was incredible.
03:29And now we get to go racing again, just seven days later.
03:33This, though, is what the Indy 500 result did to the championship standings.
03:37Alex Pillow still leads.
03:38David Maluka second.
03:39Kirkwood is third.
03:41Lundgaard fourth, then O'Ward and McLaughlin.
03:43But look at that.
03:44The gap from Pillow down to McLaughlin, pretty much the same as it was from Pillow to O'Ward at
03:51this same juncture last year.
03:54The title is not over yet.
03:57The title is not over yet.
03:58And watch David Maluka so consistent.
04:00He has the highest average finish this season.
04:05And he has come in every single spot.
04:07He's racing now.
04:08He's a contender for a win.
04:09He's never won an Indy car race.
04:11He has a great chance today.
04:13Everybody has a great chance today.
04:14That's what's so cool about this race is this one is about as unpredictable as it gets.
04:18We always get cautions here.
04:20That turn three can really stack cars up on the start and on restarts.
04:24A lot of action.
04:24A lot of strategy options.
04:26This is anybody's race.
04:27Townsend, you said David Maluka has a great chance to win today.
04:30He starts last.
04:31That is how wild things can get here on the streets of Detroit.
04:34It's never over until it's over.
04:36And one guy who knows that only too well is the winner of the Indianapolis 500, Felix Rosenquist.
04:42Here's what he did this week after winning the Indy 500.
04:46Had to return to the Speedway for photos the next day.
04:49Had a couple of hours at home with his baby girl to revel in the joy of the 500.
04:54Then it was ceremonies, New York, interviews, you name it.
04:58And he's got another interview right now with Georgia Hennebri.
05:01It's the one-week anniversary of Felix Rosenquist winning the 110th running of the Indianapolis 500.
05:08Gosh, this week has had to have been something for you.
05:11What has it been like?
05:12How has your life changed?
05:15I mean, I'm not sure if I know the whole extent of it yet, but it's been busy.
05:19Like, it's just been flat out going to New York after the race, pretty much straight back here.
05:26Yeah, like, it's just been a whirlwind, to be honest.
05:28But it's been a lot of fun.
05:29Like, obviously tiring, but a lot of fun.
05:33You know, it's cool to kind of be the face of the sport for a week.
05:36And it just seems like everyone really enjoyed it.
05:39But, yeah, back to business here as usual, you know.
05:45Detroit is always right after.
05:47So, yeah, I would definitely, would I love to go on another week or so to just enjoy it.
05:51But here we are.
05:52I'm sure there will be more celebrations in store for us later this year.
05:57Celebrations for sure in store.
05:59He's going to have some work to do coming from 16th and Kevin with David Malukas.
06:03And David Malukas has even more work to do after a qualifying crash from the back.
06:07But let's go back to that thrilling Indy 500 finish.
06:10You made a lot of fans.
06:12You came this close.
06:13What's the last week been like?
06:14How are you dealing with it?
06:15I mean, honestly, it's been incredible.
06:17For me, you know, the first night after the 500, it was a long night thinking of what I could
06:21have done differently.
06:22But seeing the outpour from the fans, from friends and family, everybody leading up to this moment, it meant so
06:27much.
06:27And it meant to the world to me.
06:28And even a lot of these drivers, veteran drivers, they were giving me so much praise and everything.
06:32It meant a lot.
06:33So, you know, this past week has been incredible, honestly.
06:36And just we have our heads down and we're very driven.
06:38We want to, you know, go out there and get that first IndyCar win.
06:41And overall, it was an incredible race.
06:43You know, I always tell myself I wanted to be remembered, wanted to be written across history.
06:46And I feel like I already achieved part of that goal, being there for that final.
06:50David Maloukas has been knocking on the door for that first IndyCar win.
06:53Today he does it from the back, but it is a fast car.
06:56He is going to be fun to watch.
06:58And you know chaos is on the way here today from the streets of Detroit.
07:03Stay with us as we continue the NTT IndyCar season.
07:12Well, this is a very different challenge from this time a week ago.
07:19And for Felix Rosenquist, that very much showed through in qualifying.
07:25Not the session that he was hoping for.
07:27The paddock definitely arrives here emotionally drained, physically exhausted,
07:32but fully aware that championships are not won at Indianapolis alone.
07:38And none more so than Alex Pillow.
07:42He was on pole for both races at IMS, the Indy Grand Prix.
07:47And of course, the 110th running of the Indy 500 didn't convert either of those into a race win,
07:55but did extend his championship lead.
07:58Only Alex Pillow could do that.
08:02And he knows that championships are won across weekends like this one.
08:07The momentum belongs to him.
08:10And the championship leader leaves Indianapolis, arrives here with his advantage strengthened.
08:17There's no two ways about that.
08:20His third pole position in a row here yesterday.
08:24Yesterday, first time he's ever done that in his IndyCar career.
08:29And another reminder that whenever the pressure rises, Pillow seems to find another level.
08:35And for those trying to stop him, the task becomes harder.
08:38David Malukas arrived here as his nearest challenger in the standings,
08:43carrying that confidence of a breakthrough season and another strong result at the 500.
08:49But a heavy crash yesterday in qualifying.
08:51He will start this afternoon's race from the very back of the field in the backup car.
08:59So already the Hunter suddenly has a mountain to climb.
09:04Does the attention focus back on the likes of Carl Kirkwood for this afternoon to challenge Pillow?
09:16If you love your street art, Detroit is renowned as one of the best places in the country
09:23to come and see the bold creativity of the city's artists.
09:28This, though, a younger generation, the Boys and Girls Club of Detroit,
09:32painting the track their own colors.
09:34Now it's time for Jack.
09:39We're going to crack straight on with our grid walk today.
09:42The king of the street circuits, Kyle Kirkwood.
09:45What's it going to take to get win number seven today?
09:48It's a good question.
09:49Yeah.
09:50We're starting sixth.
09:51It's a little bit deeper than we'd like to be, right?
09:53But the Sam's Club Honda's fast just kind of blew that fast sixth run there.
09:57Didn't realize how fast I actually was.
09:58I thought it was done as soon as it started, and it wasn't.
10:02Just pushed a little too hard to finish the lap.
10:04So we know we got fast cars, right?
10:06All of our Andretti Global cars, the Sam's Club Honda has been fast all weekend long.
10:11We're just going to play it smart, you know?
10:12Play it smart, take positions where we can, try and do some cool things on strategy,
10:17and see if we can cycle up into the lead.
10:19That's kind of the name of the game here.
10:21But who knows on the yellow stuff, right?
10:22They've been calling a lot of reds in practice.
10:25There's been a lot of cars in runoffs, a lot of cars spun, not restarting.
10:28So it's going to be interesting.
10:31We're all thinking maybe there's going to be a lot of yellows,
10:32but it might be a placebo.
10:34It might be quite the opposite.
10:35So we're not really sure, but we're going to try and tee ourselves up
10:38as much as we can at the end of this race to hopefully go for a win.
10:42Awesome.
10:42Well, good luck today, bub.
10:44Have a great day.
10:45You did good getting all the sponsors in, too.
10:48I don't know if he would have heard me as I said that.
10:50But that's the fun.
10:51Sometimes, you know, people don't get to choose.
10:54We're going to talk to our man, Christian Lungard.
10:57Christian, it seems like no amount of engine changes is going to slow you down this weekend.
11:02What are we thinking about today?
11:04Go fast and don't look back.
11:07I think it will be a very interesting race today for multiple reasons, right?
11:11I think we've had our fair share of issues.
11:14And at the end of the day, we saw the yellow situation at the end of GP.
11:19And I think Kyle's made it pretty clear, even in the next race,
11:23with a little piece of debris, he will throw the caution.
11:26So I think it's for everyone to win today.
11:31And I think it's pretty much for the leaders to lose.
11:33So I'm just going to go out there and have a great day.
11:36Make Jack here proud.
11:38You always make me proud.
11:39Just go and have a great day.
11:41I tell you, I love my drivers.
11:44Some of them are very fast on track.
11:47They're all very fast on track.
11:48But they're actually all long in answers.
11:51We were going to try and speak to Scotty Mack and Scott Dixon,
11:56but we're going to run out of time.
11:58And I want to talk to our coach.
12:01I'm trying to find him, actually.
12:03Where is our...
12:04Oh, I found him.
12:07Kyle Whittingham, coach, Michigan Wolverines football team, head coach.
12:12What are we expecting for today?
12:13Speed.
12:14Speed, speed, more speed.
12:16Speed, speed, and more speed.
12:17I love it.
12:18Best of luck for your season that's coming up as well.
12:20Hey, thank you very much.
12:21I appreciate that.
12:22Thanks, coach.
12:23Okay, you got it.
12:38It's running up and down, talking to all the people that he does.
12:42Don't envy him with that task.
12:44Easier said than done.
12:46No doubt about that.
12:47Right, we're looking ahead at the race now.
12:49Drivers are in the car.
12:51What are we going to expect?
12:53A two or a three stopper?
12:55Predominantly, this is a two stopper.
12:57It has been a three, four stopper in the past.
13:00And that is when the alternate tyre,
13:03the red sidewall tyre that you can see on the 28 car there,
13:07has not been very durable.
13:10Now, as we know, this year,
13:11that red sidewall tyre is much better.
13:14It doesn't fall off a cliff.
13:16It takes a bit of time to get heat into it,
13:18and it's more durable.
13:20And so teams just don't know
13:23if this is going to be a red or a black race.
13:26And there was more confusion in qualifying yesterday.
13:29We saw that play out.
13:31So the rules this year, you have to run,
13:34and this is just in street race, of course,
13:37is you have to run the red sidewall tyre twice in this race.
13:42So it can be done on a two stopper,
13:45but the red sidewall tyre, if that is the case,
13:49has to do more than 31 laps to make it a two stopper.
13:55If they can't get that red sidewall tyre to do the 31 laps,
14:00then it'll go more towards a three stopper.
14:03A fuel tank around here,
14:06under green flag conditions,
14:08will do about 39 laps.
14:11The race, of course, is 100 laps,
14:14264 kilometres around this 1.645 mile,
14:21nine-turn temporary street course.
14:23We've been here three years now.
14:25This will be the fourth race that we've been racing
14:27in the shadows of the Renaissance Centre there.
14:30We moved from Belle Isle to downtown Detroit,
14:34and this is a very, very challenging circuit.
14:38On average, we've seen about 33 laps of caution,
14:42about six cautions per race over those three years.
14:46And so there is plenty of scope for strategy for runners further back to roll the dice.
14:53Look at David Malukas, for example.
14:55What is he going to do further back to get that Team Penske car back up to the front?
15:02Winners in this field, Alex Pillow, Scott Dixon and Carl Kirkwood.
15:06Will we see someone else add their name to the winners list in downtown Detroit
15:12and stand on that winner's circle podium there?
15:16As I said, watch out for the first lap.
15:20One or two of you getting in touch on social media.
15:23Carl Swan says,
15:24Will cautions breed cautions and will we see snakes and ladders today?
15:28Let's wait and see as we get ready for the command.
15:33Well, that unique podium is where they all hope to be
15:37at the end of the Detroit GP today.
15:40But where do they start?
15:41Let's take a look at the starting grid sponsored by NTT.
15:47David Malukas, Chicago, Illinois.
15:50Stingray Rob, head Idaho.
15:52Mick Schumacher, Germany.
15:53Santino Ferrucci, Woodbury, Connecticut.
15:56Joseph Newgarden, Nashville, Tennessee.
15:58Romain Grosjean, Geneva, Switzerland.
16:01Kyle Collet, São Paulo, Brazil.
16:02Rienus VK, Hove Dorp, the Netherlands.
16:05Kevin Simpson, Camille Islands.
16:06Felix Rosenquist, Bernabeau, Sweden.
16:09Dennis Auger, Irish Group, Norway.
16:11Alexander Rossi, Nevada City, California.
16:14Nolan Siegel, Palo Alto, California.
16:16Graham Rahal, Columbus, Ohio.
16:18Louis Foster, Odium, England.
16:20Marcus Eriksson, Cum La Suedan.
16:22Love to listen to Sissi Top.
16:24Christian Rasmussen, Copenhagen, Denmark.
16:27Marcus Armstrong, Christchurch, New Zealand.
16:29Pato Award, Monterrey, Mexico.
16:31Kyle Kirkwood, Jupiter, Florida.
16:33Christian Lundgaard, Hiddenstead, Denmark.
16:36Scott Dixon, Auckland, New Zealand.
16:38Scott McLaughlin, Christchurch, New Zealand.
16:40Will Power, Tawumba, Australia.
16:42Alex Pelot, Barcelona Spain.
16:46Well, it's his third pole position in a row.
16:50Can Alex Pelot convert that into victory?
16:53We're about to find out.
16:55As we get the command, trackside.
16:59Here to give the command for today's race,
17:02please welcome Chief Executive Officer
17:04and Chair of General Motors, Mary Barra.
17:10Live from the Motor City,
17:12drivers, start your engines.
17:22Hey, coach, it's Townsend Bell
17:24in the Fox Sports booth.
17:25You copy?
17:26Let's go!
17:28I'm sure you...
17:31We'll be right back.
18:03It's 100 laps today
18:05around this bumpy street circuit.
18:08Up and down the streets
18:10around the red center there,
18:11you see turn one.
18:12Max speed, 145 mile an hour.
18:14It's so tight on the exit.
18:15The fastest corner, Townsend, is turn two.
18:18That leads down this long run
18:19down Jefferson Avenue.
18:21Yeah, it's a monster.
18:21181 miles an hour.
18:23This place is a nine-turn fist fight,
18:25and it gets really, really nasty
18:28in the three there
18:29as cars try to out-break each other.
18:31They can go three wide there,
18:32and then it tightens up
18:33through four, five, and six.
18:34That's where the elbows come out.
18:35They start pushing and shoving to get by.
18:37We've seen a lot of incidents in seven,
18:38a lot of cars in the runoff in eight,
18:40even a few wall taps in nine.
18:42Nowhere is safe
18:43around the streets of Detroit
18:44when you're in an Indy car
18:45going 180 miles an hour.
18:47It is 70 degrees.
18:49It is sunny.
18:51From what we learned in practice
18:52this morning,
18:54the soft tire,
18:55which seemed like it wouldn't be
18:56an option earlier in the weekend,
18:57may just have come into play.
19:00How the teams decide their strategy today
19:03will be all important,
19:04as will the timing of the cautions.
19:07There are pretty much always cautions
19:09on this track.
19:10Dan Jack.
19:11Will, you're absolutely right.
19:13There is always a lot of caution.
19:15Strategy is going to be a big factor today.
19:17The thing I really wanted to highlight, though,
19:19how tough and mentally strong
19:20some of our drivers are.
19:22Joseph Newgarden and Alexander Rossi
19:24still on crutches,
19:26still wearing a boot.
19:27They're at the bumpiest street circuit.
19:29I know they're going to be in a lot of pain.
19:31I just feel like it's really worth mentioning
19:33how mentally strong
19:35these Indy car drivers are.
19:37Georgia.
19:37And, Jack, something that I want to highlight,
19:39this is the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix,
19:41but it's been an interesting weekend
19:42for Chevrolet,
19:43having to change eight engines already,
19:46two by the 17th of Christian Lugar.
19:48Now, Chevrolet has come out
19:49and said that this was a coding issue
19:51that's affected the valves of the engines,
19:53but they have it contained,
19:55just something to keep our eyes on
19:56going forward in the race.
19:58Kevin.
19:58Georgia, they are gathered everywhere here
20:01to see this race on the streets of Detroit
20:06and looking for a show,
20:07and Will Power has been known
20:08to put on a show as well.
20:10In his first year, though,
20:11with Andretti,
20:12he has an average finish of 16th so far.
20:15His second-best result is 12th.
20:18This is from the fourth all-time winner
20:20in Indy car history,
20:22but he's starting on the front row,
20:23almost won a pole
20:25for the 73rd time yesterday.
20:27He has a real chance to win
20:29in his 19th season.
20:31On board, courtesy of TWG.
20:33Can Power get it done today?
20:35Having moved over from Penske to Andretti,
20:37it hasn't been the start to the relationship
20:39that either side of that party
20:42would have hoped for.
20:43Guys in the top six today of our starters,
20:46half of them have not yet won a race this season.
20:49Will Power starting second,
20:50Scott McLaughlin starting third,
20:51Scott Dixon starting fourth,
20:52how each of them would love
20:54to get that box checked today?
20:57And we understand
20:58that Alexander Rossi
20:59has already hit the wall here.
21:02Oh, my goodness.
21:03That's actually quite a big hit.
21:04Trying to warm his tires
21:05at the exit of this corner.
21:07There's a big step-off here.
21:08Listen.
21:12That's a good look at the wall for sure.
21:14I'm trying to look at the steering wheel.
21:15See the angle slightly there.
21:17It looked like right hand down to me.
21:19Now, the roads are crowned here,
21:21so sometimes there's a little steering offset,
21:24but as he's running down the straightaway here,
21:26it looks like he might have bent that thing already.
21:29And not just his race car,
21:31his body is battered after that huge crash.
21:34And Indy has a screw in his finger and his ankle.
21:37So he's just trying to survive at this point.
21:40Well, not coming in.
21:42Not enough to pit, certainly.
21:43If there's any damage,
21:44it is pretty minimal at this point.
21:46But then we go back to what happened
21:47to Louis Foster last year
21:48with that suspension failure
21:49because the bumps here can be so tough.
21:51If you have weakened it
21:52because of contact with the wall,
21:54that's going to be a concern for the 20 now
21:55for all 100 laps of this race.
22:00So Rossi damaged his car,
22:02potentially damaged as well
22:04before this race has even got underway.
22:08Joseph Newgarden starting down in 21st place.
22:11He also injured.
22:12His teammate David Malukas, though,
22:14starting right from the back of the field, 25th.
22:16His car rebuilt over the night.
22:17That is the spare car.
22:19This Verizon onboard
22:19is going to give us some great shots, Will,
22:21as we watch him charging up from the back.
22:23You see he's starting on the hards.
22:25Going to go a little bit of a different strategy
22:27than what the top four drivers are doing,
22:28which is what you have to do
22:30if you're David Malukas starting shotgun on the field.
22:32Everybody in the field on a street track
22:34has to run the soft tire twice.
22:36That means it's a minimum of two pit stops today.
22:42Race is 100 laps.
22:44Range is about 35 laps on a tank of fuel,
22:48so an easy two-stopper.
22:50But the biggest change is if cautions come,
22:53they might be more aggressive.
22:55Race control is not going to leave the pits open
22:57like they used to.
23:00Deering up out of turn two.
23:02We do the starts and restarts here
23:04on the back straight.
23:06And it's Alex Pillow,
23:07who for the third time in three races
23:09will take us to green.
23:11We wait for the flag.
23:12Everybody lining up two by two by two,
23:15and we get the green,
23:16and Will Power immediately ducks into the toe
23:19of Alex Pillow on the run down
23:21to what is turn three,
23:22but for the sake of the start,
23:23it's turn one.
23:24Pillow has the inside line,
23:26keeps that nicely covered,
23:27and it's actually pretty tidy behind Collette
23:30with a little bump of the car in front of him,
23:32but all neatly through.
23:34It looks like McLaughlin up front,
23:35maybe he got ahead as we go,
23:36throws a quest.
23:37Going in a little bit hot there
23:39as we see it too wide
23:40down the hill into turn five.
23:42This is a tight section of racetrack.
23:44Drivers be so careful here
23:46not to hit each other or concrete
23:48and damage their cars early,
23:50but it's a tall order
23:51as Pillow leads easily.
23:53And McLaughlin has gone ahead
23:55of willpower on this opening lap.
23:57The Penske driver up to second.
23:59Rossi looking on the inside of Rahal there,
24:01Cuban Simpson going defensive
24:02on the young rookie,
24:03Kyle Collette,
24:04who's been racing despite nursing
24:06some sore ribs from that massive hit
24:08he took in turn two late in the 500.
24:14It's all shockingly calm and quiet right now, guys.
24:17This place, like we said,
24:18can just throw up some incredible incidents,
24:20especially down here in a turn three.
24:22Push to pass is going to be active.
24:24That's 150 seconds of about 50 extra horsepower
24:28that each driver has available to use.
24:30You can use it in offense.
24:31You can use it in defense.
24:33Right now, drivers starting to use it.
24:36Marcus Armstrong defending from Marcus Ericsson.
24:38The Andretti driver feeling very confident
24:40coming into today's race.
24:42As the Dale Coyne and the Indy 500 winner
24:44come to blows,
24:45that's Dennis Hauger and Felix Rosenquist.
24:47Pretty spicy late move from Felix Rosenquist.
24:50No doubt feeling inspired as we ride on board
24:52thanks to Sirius XM,
24:54inspired by that spicy, bold pass
24:56to win the Indy 500
24:58around his teammate.
25:00I love the blast here.
25:01Yeah, that's a nice little trophy there.
25:03He didn't catch that.
25:05On the Fox Driver Eye logo,
25:06it's very appropriately there.
25:08But yeah, this guy,
25:08we talked to Mike Shank this morning
25:10in the warm-up show,
25:11team owner of Rosenquist,
25:12said he has a lot of pace.
25:13He just had a small issue in qualifying.
25:16And let's see here,
25:16he went deep into three.
25:18Hauger did the over-under on him
25:20and just elbowed him out of the way.
25:24From the onboard,
25:25Rosenquist tries to get it,
25:27tucked up the inside.
25:28Hauger slips back
25:30and Hans says,
25:31you're going to have to wait, my friend.
25:33Hauger's a heck of a racing driver
25:34as a rookie.
25:35So heads up to see the opportunity
25:37to unwind the pass.
25:39And on a pass like that
25:40from Rosenquist,
25:41you stuff it up the inside
25:42and basically you use the steering
25:44as an additional brake pedal
25:46just by jamming it up.
25:47Armstrong and Ericsson.
25:48The Andretti driver
25:49still trying to find his way through.
25:52Armstrong, who was so dismayed,
25:54so disappointed
25:55after leading the Indy 500
25:57to green on that final lap
25:59and ultimately coming home
26:02not with the trophy
26:03that he felt was coming his way.
26:05And this is the first opportunity
26:07we're really getting to see
26:08as drivers settle in.
26:09The difference between the two tires,
26:11Ericsson there
26:11on those red soft tires,
26:13Armstrong here
26:14on the harder black tires.
26:16And you can see Ericsson
26:17all over the gearbox
26:19of Armstrong.
26:20Looks like he's got
26:21a little bit of pace at hand,
26:22just unable to get the move done
26:24so far as we ride on board
26:25the Siemens machine
26:26of Ericsson here.
26:27And that'll be the thing to watch
26:29is where the crossover point
26:30is on the tires.
26:31So for Marcus Ericsson
26:32on those softs,
26:33if he's quicker now,
26:35how much longer
26:36will those reds be quicker?
26:37Maybe around lap 15 or 20
26:39we'll get to that crossover point
26:41where the reds start to slow down
26:43and the harder black tire
26:44becomes preferred.
26:46When we talk about
26:46the pace advantage
26:47of the soft, though,
26:48you've got to take your hat off
26:49to Christian Lundgaard
26:50at the moment
26:50in the lead McLaren.
26:52Fifth place
26:52on the hard tire.
26:54Doesn't look like he's struggling.
26:56Not one little bit
26:57looking very, very comfortable
26:58right now,
26:59the man who won
26:59the Indy GP
27:00just three weeks ago.
27:05One of the great benefits
27:07of starting on the hard
27:09as we look back
27:10at Lundgaard
27:11from the PNC Bank machine
27:12of Scott Dixon
27:14is you have a couple
27:15pace laps
27:16to get heat in the tires.
27:17One of the things
27:18a lot of the drivers
27:18have been saying
27:19with the low grip surface
27:20here in Detroit,
27:21it's been tough
27:22to generate the tire temperature.
27:23The track is low grip.
27:25There's not a lot
27:26of fast corners
27:27to put that lateral load
27:28in, really heat the tire up.
27:29And so when you've got
27:30those pace laps,
27:31you can weave a bit.
27:32You can use the brakes.
27:34You can do things
27:35to get these up to temperature.
27:37Meanwhile,
27:37if you put them on
27:38at a pit stop,
27:39you're going to have
27:39an out lap on cold tires.
27:41It's going to be tough.
27:41Great shot here
27:42on the McLaren Racing Club
27:44on board.
27:45I thought Lundgaard
27:45might have a lunge up there
27:47into turn three,
27:49but he doesn't quite
27:50have the run yet.
27:51Watch that hybrid usage
27:52as well as he works
27:53the lap
27:54in terms of push
27:54to pass seconds.
27:56Lundgaard has already
27:57burned nine
27:57of his 150.
27:59Scott Dixon,
28:00meanwhile,
28:01has done 22 seconds.
28:03That's a lot
28:03for this stage
28:04of the race, Townsend.
28:05Shows how much
28:06he's having to push
28:07to stay ahead
28:07of the McLaren
28:08who gets a little wiggly
28:10through seven
28:11and on the run
28:11down to eight.
28:12I'll tell you what,
28:12guys, five laps
28:13into this 100-lap contest.
28:15The man on the move
28:16right now is Santino Ferrucci
28:17who started 22nd,
28:19finished on the podium
28:20here last year.
28:21A brilliant run
28:22from Santino Ferrucci.
28:23It's his birthday today
28:25and of all the drivers,
28:26he's made up the most positions.
28:28Ericsson up two,
28:29Rosenquist up two,
28:30Malukas up two,
28:31but the driver
28:32who has lost
28:33the most positions
28:33and has now fallen down
28:35to last place,
28:36Joseph Newgarden,
28:38who was questionable
28:38as to whether he would
28:40even contest this weekend.
28:42His team
28:43were also racing
28:44in IMSA
28:45here this weekend.
28:46One of their drivers,
28:47Felipe Nasr,
28:48was on standby
28:49and done time
28:49in the simulator this week
28:51just to prepare himself
28:52in case Newgarden
28:53wasn't fit enough
28:54after that big accident
28:55at the Indy 500.
28:56Saw him injure his leg.
28:59But Newgarden said,
29:00I'm going to show up
29:01for my team,
29:01for my sponsors.
29:02I'm going to give it
29:03my best.
29:04Well, he qualified 21st.
29:06He's now plum last
29:07and dropping.
29:09We're right on board
29:10with Estemo here.
29:12You've got to think
29:13Newgarden is just
29:13in a lot of pain
29:14just trying to manage
29:15his pace,
29:16thinking about
29:17the 100-lap distance.
29:18He's got 94 laps to go,
29:20but let's take a look back
29:21to Turn 4 restart
29:24at Indianapolis.
29:26James,
29:26it's one of the bigger
29:27restart crashes
29:28I've ever seen
29:28in terms of impact.
29:30Yeah, just getting up
29:30to speed.
29:31He said,
29:32drop that left front
29:33onto the curb there.
29:34Just said he lost sight
29:35of where the car was.
29:36He was so focused
29:37on the cars in front
29:38trying to get
29:39a good launch
29:40and almost at a
29:42head-on crash.
29:43He went all the way around.
29:44You see the nose cone
29:45going in first.
29:47Violent accident.
29:48Luckily,
29:49not at complete paces
29:50yet,
29:50still getting up
29:51to speed on that restart.
29:52You see him walking back
29:53to the ambulance
29:54with the AMR safety team
29:56but still nursing
29:56on a little bit
29:57of a sore foot.
29:58Yeah,
29:58I mean,
29:58he's wearing a full
29:59walking cast
30:00on his left foot
30:01when he walks
30:02to the race car
30:02with a crutch
30:03and this is not
30:05what we're used to seeing
30:06from a Team Penske driver
30:07or certainly not
30:09from Joseph Newgarden.
30:10By the way,
30:10his teammate David Malukas
30:12hasn't exactly charged
30:13through the field.
30:14But Newgarden at the moment
30:15two seconds
30:16off the pace
30:17of Alex Pillow up front.
30:19He's about half a second
30:20off the pace
30:21of the cars
30:21ahead of him.
30:22If he's in that much pain,
30:24you wouldn't blame him
30:25for parking the thing up
30:27and looking ahead
30:28to Gateway
30:29in one week's time.
30:31But it's Alex Pillow
30:32who leads
30:32from Sk...
30:33Oh, goodness me.
30:35Well, that's lovely,
30:36isn't it?
30:40Well, it was Scott McLaughlin
30:42who got ahead
30:43of Will Power
30:45at the start.
30:45Alex Pillow
30:46making good use
30:47of that pole position.
30:49We know he's quick
30:50around here
30:51and he's setting
30:52the pace
30:53out front
30:53trying to break
30:55the back
30:56of Scott McLaughlin's
30:57charge.
30:58There is the steam
30:59that comes out
31:00of one of the manhole
31:01covers
31:02down at
31:03that turn
31:04three corner.
31:05We've seen that
31:06over the years.
31:07It's almost like a,
31:08I don't know,
31:09Universal Studios
31:10like Hollywood effect
31:12as the cars
31:13move through.
31:14Yeah,
31:15dry ice,
31:16my producer says
31:17in my ears.
31:18But Alex Pillow
31:19won't be noticing that.
31:21Scott McLaughlin
31:22very much keeping him
31:23honest
31:23and this is a great
31:24turn of pace
31:27from Will Power.
31:27We know he's had
31:29problems
31:29getting the balance
31:31of that car right.
31:33A bit of radio traffic
31:37from Phoenix Rosenquist
31:38there.
31:39But Power's struggled
31:40with the Andretti car
31:41and the braking system.
31:42Now they have
31:43a stock braking system
31:44in terms of components
31:46on the car
31:47but the actual
31:48system itself
31:49and the valves
31:50and the feel
31:51and that kind of stuff
31:52and some of the
31:54components
31:55with the pads
31:56and stuff
31:56you can change.
31:57So Power has struggled
31:59with that
32:00but he's not showing
32:01signs of that today.
32:02So for Will Power
32:03and Andretti fans
32:04that's a great
32:06that's a great start
32:08to the race for him
32:09and also very good
32:10to see Scott Dixon
32:11running up there
32:12in the top four.
32:14Carl Kirkwood
32:15who was the nearest
32:17title rival
32:18to Alex Pillow
32:21running there
32:21in sixth place.
32:23We know he started
32:24seventh at Arlington
32:25earlier in the year
32:26and came through
32:27the field
32:27and passed below
32:29in the final stages
32:30to get it done there.
32:32So keep an eye
32:33on Carl Kirkwood
32:34in that spot
32:35just behind
32:36Christian Lundgaard.
32:38Lundgaard is
32:39the only car
32:40in the top
32:41six
32:42on the black
32:44sidewall tyre.
32:45Now as I said
32:46a full
32:47fuel window
32:48here's 39 laps
32:50and they want
32:51to get
32:51at least
32:5231 laps.
32:54Oh and there is
32:55damage there
32:56to the 21.
32:57That is Rasmussen.
32:59He looks like
33:00he's hit something.
33:01It's the right front
33:02that has given up
33:03and he's all over
33:04the road
33:04and
33:05trying to take
33:07evasive action
33:08behind.
33:10Not exactly sure
33:11who that was
33:12but that was
33:13a little bit
33:14chaotic.
33:15Full course
33:16yellow
33:17is out.
33:18So the first
33:18caution
33:18of this
33:20Chevrolet Detroit
33:22Grand Prix
33:23out
33:23as that
33:24is Rasmussen
33:25clattering
33:26the wall
33:27at turn one
33:28and then
33:29Nolan Siegel
33:30trying to get
33:31through.
33:32So Graham
33:32Rahul
33:32getting through
33:33there as well.
33:35So that
33:36was
33:37Felix Rosenquist
33:39that he
33:40almost collected
33:41as
33:42the Indy 500
33:43winner
33:44leading
33:44that
33:45second
33:46group
33:46of cars
33:47through.
33:47I mean
33:47Rasmussen
33:48doesn't
33:48quite know
33:49where he's
33:49going.
33:50Let's head
33:50back now
33:51to your
33:51Fox team.
33:52They're going
33:52to talk
33:52us through
33:52this caution
33:53and what
33:54is to
33:54come.
33:55Brick
33:56just trying
33:56to find
33:57a break
33:57in the
33:58wall
33:58so that
33:58he could
33:59get his
33:59car
33:59to some
34:00element
34:00of safety.
34:01Rasmussen
34:02looks okay
34:02getting out
34:03of the car
34:03but that
34:04is one
34:05ECR
34:05out.
34:05Our first
34:06retirement
34:06today
34:07is
34:07Christian
34:08Rasmussen.
34:14I'm
34:14sorry

34:56the wrong
34:56thing
34:56the new
34:57sustainability
34:58program
34:59called
34:59enlightened
35:00by
35:00firestone
35:01actually
35:01incorporates
35:02all of
35:03the technology
35:04from the
35:05Wyoli
35:05tyre so
35:06not much
35:07has changed
35:08in that
35:09sense
35:09apart from
35:10we haven't
35:11got the
35:11green side
35:12wheel tyre
35:12it's just
35:13red and
35:13black on
35:14the road
35:14and streets
35:14and of
35:15course the
35:16oval tyre
35:16we have
35:17predominantly
35:18just one
35:19tyre
35:19there's
35:19Rasmussen
35:20out of
35:21his car
35:22Rasmussen
35:23is a
35:23driver that's
35:23under a
35:24bit of
35:24pressure
35:24this year
35:25we heard
35:25the Fox
35:25team
35:26talking about
35:26drivers who
35:27were under
35:27a bit of
35:28pressure
35:28already this
35:29year
35:29as we
35:30reach
35:30round
35:31well
35:32the
35:33halfway
35:33point
35:34of the
35:35season
35:35round
35:35eight
35:37Scott
35:38McLaughlin
35:38not a driver
35:40that's under
35:40pressure
35:40but by his
35:41high standards
35:42hasn't quite
35:43gone according
35:44to plan
35:44but comes
35:45here
35:46off of a
35:47strong finish
35:48at IMS
35:49and that
35:50Indy 500
35:50run
35:51will give
35:51him a
35:52boost
35:52give him
35:52some
35:53encouragement
35:53he's
35:53the lone
35:54Penske
35:55up at
35:56the front
35:56of that
35:57field
35:57at the
35:58moment
35:58and I'm
35:59hearing in
35:59my ear
36:00that there
36:00is a bit
36:01of action
36:02on pit lane
36:03now we've
36:03seen passing
36:04is quite
36:05hard here
36:06so they're
36:07going to
36:07try and
36:08go off
36:09strategy
36:09further back
36:11I'm sure
36:11of that
36:12they won't
36:13be recklessly
36:14rolling the
36:14dice but
36:15I'll be
36:15very surprised
36:16if we
36:17didn't see
36:17a couple
36:18of cars
36:19further back
36:19come in
36:20top up
36:20see what
36:21they can
36:22do
36:22turn it
36:23into a
36:23three stopper
36:24and see
36:25where this
36:25race goes
36:26from then
36:27on in
36:32on board
36:32the team
36:34this was
36:35that famous
36:36section of
36:36the track
36:37where he
36:37gave Carl
36:38Kirkwood
36:38the big
36:39chrome
36:39horn
36:40last year
36:41in practice
36:42caused some
36:43discussion
36:44on social
36:45media
36:45but Will
36:46Power
36:46found it
36:46quite amusing
36:47after
36:47didn't
36:48actually
36:48get in
36:48trouble
36:49for that
36:50lifting up
36:50the back
36:51of Carl
36:51Kirkwood's
36:52car and
36:52driving him
36:53through the
36:53S's
36:54but no
36:55repeats of
36:56that this
36:56year
36:57of course
36:57their
36:58teammates
37:04running lap
37:0413 of the
37:05Detroit GP
37:06pit lane is
37:07open under
37:07caution
37:08Rinas VK
37:09and Stingray
37:09Robb
37:10had actually
37:10opted to pit
37:10under green
37:11so they
37:12lead the
37:12pack of
37:12those who
37:13have stopped
37:13of those
37:14who have
37:14stopped
37:14under
37:15yellow
37:15Rosenquist
37:16the
37:17Indy 500
37:17champion
37:18Dennis
37:18Hauger
37:19and
37:19Joseph
37:20Newgarden
37:21along with
37:21his teammate
37:22David
37:22Malukas
37:23Kevin
37:24why do we
37:24think it's
37:25only them
37:26because it's
37:27too early
37:28to get it
37:28done on
37:29two stops
37:29and the
37:30way you
37:30have to
37:30do
37:30strategy
37:31is
37:31thinking
37:31about
37:32it
37:32staying
37:32green
37:32for the
37:33rest
37:34of the
37:34way
37:34what
37:35those
37:35have
37:35stopped
37:36are
37:36thinking
37:36they're
37:37just
37:37hoping
37:37there's
37:37a
37:37whole
37:37bunch
37:38of
37:38caution
37:38maybe
37:39they
37:39get

37:41that's

37:48to at least
37:4828 or so
37:50to be able to
37:50make it on
37:50two stops
37:51and depending
37:52on how the
37:52tire life is
37:53they might go
37:54even longer
37:54than that
37:55up to

37:5633 to
37:5635
37:56a top

38:07this
