The Living Ghost is a 1942 American mystery-drama film directed by William Beaudine and produced by Monogram Pictures. Starring James Dunn and Joan Woodbury, the film incorporates elements of the horror genre as it follows an ex-private detective who is called in to investigate why a banker has turned into a zombie.

Plot:
When wealthy banker Walter Craig (Gus Glassmire) disappears, former private eye Nick Trayne (James Dunn) comes out of retirement to find the missing man. As Nick gets to know the contentious Craig family, the rich man reappears, but someone has put him in an unresponsive, zombie-like state. Then a member of the family is found stabbed to death, with Walter standing over him. When Walter attacks Nick, it seems that the catatonic banker is the killer, but Nick thinks there is more to the mystery.

00:01:00Ladies and gentlemen, how many times must I ask you to go away?
00:01:11Mrs. Craig refuses to see any reporters.
00:01:13We only want a minute.
00:01:14Have you any idea what happened to Mr. Craig?
00:01:15Yeah, do you have any enemies?
00:01:16All right, you can go in, Cedric.
00:01:17Very good, Mr. Rutherford.
00:01:19I appreciate how anxious you boys are for an interview, but Mrs. Craig is under a very severe strain.
00:01:23Who are you?
00:01:24I'm Anthony Weldon, a friend of the family.
00:01:26Well, how about giving us the dope on the case, huh?
00:01:27Yeah, any idea what happened to them?
00:01:29Was there a ransom note?
00:01:30No, no note.
00:01:31You know as much about this as we do.
00:01:32What about the police?
00:01:33Did they find out anything?
00:01:34Not that we know of.
00:01:35Suppose you ask them.
00:01:36Well, look, could we go in and have just a minute with Mrs. Craig?
00:01:38I'm sorry, but that's impossible.
00:01:40Now, if you boys will show a little consideration, I promise to keep you informed.
00:01:43Otherwise, I shall have to ask the police to keep you away.
00:01:46That's all there is to it.
00:01:49Well, he's a big help.
00:01:51I just called the police.
00:01:52They have nothing to report.
00:01:53Oh, we're getting nowhere.
00:01:54I think we ought to call in a private investigator.
00:01:56What do you think, Mr. Phillips?
00:01:57Well, if everybody else agrees, it's all right with me.
00:02:00Very definite, my dear.
00:02:02That's the kind of initiative I've had to put up with all my life.
00:02:05Oh, please, Aunt dear.
00:02:06Must you always pick on him?
00:02:08What do you think, Kelly?
00:02:09Splendid idea.
00:02:10Anybody particular in mind?
00:02:12Yes, I'd like to get a fellow named Nick Train.
00:02:14He's a good friend of mine.
00:02:15Huh.
00:02:16I thought you'd get a friend of yours to protect my charming stepmother, who is so grief-stricken.
00:02:22Tina, I'm ashamed of you.
00:02:23Oh, it's all right, dear dear.
00:02:25Tina's overawed.
00:02:26I know she doesn't need it.
00:02:28Oh.
00:02:30Don't I, though?
00:02:36Don't pay any attention to Tina, Mrs. Craig.
00:02:38She's terribly upset.
00:02:39I know, Billy.
00:02:40Is this Nick Train a good man, Mr. Malina?
00:02:43Oh, he's one of the best.
00:02:43He used to be chief investigator at the district attorney's office.
00:02:46Well, then by all means, let's get him.
00:02:47That may not be so easy.
00:02:49He gave up the DA's job a long time ago.
00:02:51He said he was fed up with the detective business.
00:02:53What's he doing?
00:02:54Where is he now?
00:02:55I don't know.
00:02:55I'll have to look him up.
00:02:56Oh, if he's as good as you say, you must get him, by all means.
00:02:59I'll do my best.
00:03:00Oh, Billy, you'd better come along with me.
00:03:02If Mr. Train agrees to take the case, you'll have to drive him back here.
00:03:05I have some business to attend to in town tonight.
00:03:07Yes, sir.
00:03:07Can I get you something, Mrs. Craig?
00:03:09Will you be leaving right away, Mr. Malina?
00:03:11Right away.
00:03:12I'll go right with you.
00:03:35What kind of a gag is that?
00:03:37You got me, but if I know Nick, it must be a fifth.
00:03:39What sort of a fellow is he?
00:03:40He's a little on the eccentric side.
00:03:42A little?
00:03:44Clever men usually are.
00:03:45Come on, here he goes.
00:03:46Come on.
00:03:48Sit down now.
00:03:48Nice doggy.
00:03:49Hello, brother.
00:03:50Hi, sister.
00:03:51Green is in the final court.
00:03:52The tone of tones all the time.
00:03:53The fellow sitting inside the class from the E's and the final floor.
00:03:55On the credit in the table and the high.
00:03:57I beg your pardon.
00:03:59Here he go.
00:04:00Green is in the final.
00:04:01The token inside the fellow sitting inside the floor and the four in the couch from the E and the side of court.
00:04:04I'm going to hit on the high and the front of a walk and the side of fire.
00:04:06Don't you think?
00:04:07I'm sure I don't know.
00:04:09Don't know?
00:04:11I suppose we go inside and find out.
00:04:12That wouldn't be brother train, would it?
00:04:26No, he's not that eccentric.
00:04:28Well, if I'm from the side, that's where I'm at.
00:04:30Boom, boom, boom.
00:04:31Couldn't imagine.
00:04:32Couldn't find a center, find a side.
00:04:33Sure, I'll find a fine center.
00:04:35And I couldn't imagine for it.
00:04:39Wait!
00:04:40No.
00:04:41I couldn't imagine.
00:04:43I couldn't imagine.
00:04:43So there he was, of course, I fought in the final fight.
00:04:46I couldn't imagine for it.
00:04:47I couldn't imagine for it.
00:04:48So he had a fine center.
00:04:49I could start finding.
00:04:50And oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
00:04:53Ha, ha, ha.
00:04:55You can find a fine center.
00:04:56Ha, ha.
00:04:57Hirohito.
00:04:57Come on, come on.
00:04:59Hee, hee.
00:05:02Shitty.
00:05:03Ha, ha, ha, ha.
00:05:05Hirohito, come on.
00:05:06Come on.
00:05:07That's a nice.
00:05:08That's a nice boy.
00:05:09Ha, ha, ha, ha.
00:05:11You sure we're in the right ward?
00:05:21Yes.
00:05:22Now, look, if Nick is stubborn and is hard to handle,
00:05:24I want you to help me sell him the idea.
00:05:26Me?
00:05:27Yes.
00:05:27How?
00:05:28Well, I just want you to insult his professional ability.
00:05:31That's one thing he can't stand.
00:05:33Oh, I see.
00:05:35Oh, you don't know how happy you made me, Brother Tyrion.
00:05:38My dear sister, if I've done anything to alleviate your distress,
00:05:42I am profoundly gratified.
00:05:44And when shall I see you again, Brother Tyrion?
00:05:46Anytime you want to unburden yourself, Sister Lafita.
00:05:49Shall I say next week sometimes?
00:05:51Yes.
00:05:52And you'll be surprised how much new troubles I'll have for you by that time.
00:05:57Very well.
00:05:57Next week, then.
00:05:59Goodbye, Brother Tyrion.
00:06:00Goodbye, Sister Lafita.
00:06:04Pardon me.
00:06:06I had to quantify my sign of one time for the fellow sitting there
00:06:08that was the big thing I was hearing.
00:06:09I couldn't imagine the guy at one time.
00:06:10There's one more thing I forgot to tell you.
00:06:11And you know, you know, I told you something about my nephew.
00:06:13Will you keep quiet and let me talk to you, Newton, with you?
00:06:14You remember my nephew, Maury, the one that's in the fire business?
00:06:15You remember him?
00:06:16Well, that's what I wanted.
00:06:17Never mind.
00:06:18It'll just have to go on my next week's troubles.
00:06:19Tiger's in front of the trail.
00:06:20You remember him?
00:06:21Well, that's what I wanted.
00:06:22Never mind.
00:06:23It'll just have to go on my next week's troubles.
00:06:25Tiger's in front of the trail.
00:06:26You remember him?
00:06:27You remember him?
00:06:28Well, that's what I wanted.
00:06:29Well, that's what I wanted.
00:06:30Well, never mind.
00:06:31It'll just have to go on my next week's troubles.
00:06:34Tiger's in front of the trail.
00:06:35Tiger's in front of the trail.
00:06:36Tiger's in front of the trail.
00:06:37Tiger's in front of the trail.
00:06:38Tiger's in front of the trail.
00:06:39Tiger's in front of the trail.
00:06:40Oh, no.
00:06:41Plus, couldn't it, you?
00:06:42Hmm.
00:06:43I couldn't say, no, finally, for all the time,
00:06:45of course, I found a sign of cards,
00:06:46but I couldn't imagine a sign of cards on a hat.
00:06:48So if I walk alone inside,
00:06:50finally, I couldn't imagine a sign.
00:06:51And if I'm going to sit there for it.
00:06:52Oh, yeah?
00:06:53Hiya.
00:06:54What are you doing here?
00:06:55I mean, Brother Moline.
00:06:56Do you desire to unburden yourself?
00:06:58Huh?
00:06:59Oh, yes, yes.
00:07:00I have something of great importance to discuss with you.
00:07:03Well, come right in.
00:07:06Yeah, do come right in.
00:07:12Oh, I'm sorry, dear brothers and sisters,
00:07:14but I will be occupied until closing time.
00:07:16Please come back tomorrow.
00:07:18And that's you.
00:07:23This is, uh, Mr. Nick Train, Billy.
00:07:26Billy Hilton, Nick.
00:07:27How do you do?
00:07:28I do.
00:07:29Sit down, please.
00:07:33Now, my dear brother and sister,
00:07:35if you would like to get down to your case,
00:07:37I would be...
00:07:38Oh, just a matter of routine.
00:07:41You know, I always do that.
00:07:42I set the alarm, customer comes in,
00:07:43I turn it off, the time's up,
00:07:44and I've made another two dollars.
00:07:46What goes on?
00:07:47What are you supposed to be?
00:07:48Promise not to last?
00:07:49Yeah.
00:07:50I'm a professional listener.
00:07:51Come again?
00:07:52I charge two dollars an hour
00:07:54and listen to people's troubles.
00:07:55Why do people tell you they're troubles?
00:07:57Well, because nobody can keep the troubles to themselves.
00:08:00There's nobody to talk to,
00:08:01so they come to me and I listen sympathetically.
00:08:03What's the gag?
00:08:04There's no gag at all.
00:08:05It's on the level.
00:08:06Makes them feel better,
00:08:07and I make a living without raising my blood pressure.
00:08:10Is this part of your racket,
00:08:11or did you just have a shampoo?
00:08:13Huh?
00:08:14Oh, this.
00:08:15Just a little professional touch.
00:08:17Makes me look like a swami.
00:08:19Very impressive, don't you think?
00:08:21Abdel's Turkish bear.
00:08:22Right now I have more of these towels than Abdel has.
00:08:24What's on your mind, Ed?
00:08:26Walter Craig's disappeared.
00:08:28We're afraid he's been kidnapped.
00:08:29Yeah, I read about it.
00:08:30We need your help.
00:08:31Oh, no soap, Ed.
00:08:32I quit all that a long time ago.
00:08:33Now, wait a minute, Nick.
00:08:34This is different.
00:08:35I tell you I'm through.
00:08:36So this is the famous Nick Train you've been raving about.
00:08:38Doesn't look to me as though he could find his way through a glass door.
00:08:41Oh, you're wrong, Billy.
00:08:43Nick has mopped up many big cases.
00:08:45Scotch or bourbon?
00:08:46Oh, no.
00:08:47He had quite a rip when he quit.
00:08:48If he was so good, why did he quit?
00:08:49That doesn't make sense to me.
00:08:51Sweet little Blanche, isn't she?
00:08:53Well, if you must know, sister,
00:08:54I quit the business because I get tired of spending all my time with murderers and thieves.
00:08:58Did you have to send your diploma back to the correspondence school when you stopped detecting, brother?
00:09:02Oh, Billy, I think that Mr. Train must have had his reasons for refusing.
00:09:05You're darn right I have.
00:09:06I can imagine how it would look in the papers.
00:09:09Great Nick Train comes out of retirement to solve mysterious disappearance and flops.
00:09:14Oh, yeah?
00:09:15Well, let me tell you something.
00:09:16There never was a case I couldn't crack.
00:09:18My, what big talk.
00:09:19Well, if you're not afraid, why don't you crack this case?
00:09:21How about it, Nick?
00:09:22What do you say?
00:09:23I'd be crazy to go back on that detective racket.
00:09:25Go back?
00:09:26Billy.
00:09:27Oh, that's too bad, Nick.
00:09:29Mrs. Craig is quite willing to pay quite a large fee.
00:09:31Say nothing of the $25,000 reward.
00:09:35$25,000.
00:09:36$25,000?
00:09:37Well, of course, money means nothing to me.
00:09:40Now, I know you're a sap.
00:09:42There never was an ear on anybody that wasn't sympathetic to that tube.
00:09:45No?
00:09:46No.
00:09:47Well, here's two.
00:09:48One here and one here.
00:09:49Do you see them?
00:09:50Mm-hmm.
00:09:51With a vacuum in the middle.
00:09:52That last crack leaves me with just two choices.
00:09:55Either I take the case or I take you over my knee.
00:09:57You wouldn't have the nerve to do either.
00:09:58Oh, wouldn't I?
00:09:59No.
00:10:00Well, before I get through, I'll do both.
00:10:01Right now, I'll take the case.
00:10:02Please.
00:10:03Oh, great stuff, Nick.
00:10:04Let's go.
00:10:05Come on, Billy.
00:10:06He'll take you down to Craig's.
00:10:07Well, sister, your little ribbing act was quite amusing.
00:10:11Now, let's get down to business.
00:10:14How long have you worked for Mr. Craig?
00:10:16Two years.
00:10:17He and my father were great friends.
00:10:18When Dad died, he offered me a job as his secretary.
00:10:20Is he a nice fellow?
00:10:21He's one of the best.
00:10:22Gentle and considerate.
00:10:24How come you live with the Craig's?
00:10:25Well, he conducts his business from his home.
00:10:27It's much more convenient, that way.
00:10:28I'll bet it is.
00:10:29I'd ask you to go to work for me if I thought you'd live at my house.
00:10:32You work fast, don't you?
00:10:34Well, if I work too fast, tell me where to get off.
00:10:36Okay, you can get off right here.
00:10:38What?
00:10:39Because here we are.
00:10:40Mrs. Craig, this is Mr. Train.
00:10:41I'm glad you're here, Mr. Train.
00:10:42Thanks.
00:10:43Mr. and Mrs. Phillips.
00:10:44How do you do?
00:10:45Mr. Train.
00:10:46Mrs. Phillips is Mr. Craig's sister.
00:10:47And Tina, Mr. Craig's daughter.
00:10:48Her fiancé Arthur Wallace.
00:10:49How do you do?
00:10:50How do you do?
00:10:51And Tony Weldon, Mr. Craig's closest friend.
00:10:52A pleasure.
00:10:53Now you're here, perhaps we'll get someplace.
00:10:54Perhaps.
00:10:55But first I'd like to find out what each of you know about this.
00:10:57If you think I'm going to submit to a place, Mr. Craig's sister, Mr. Craig's sister.
00:10:59And Tina, Mr. Craig's daughter, her fiancé Arthur Wallace.
00:11:00How do you do?
00:11:01And Tony Weldon, Mr. Craig's closest friend.
00:11:03A pleasure.
00:11:04Now you're here, perhaps we'll get someplace.
00:11:05Perhaps.
00:11:06But first I'd like to find out what each of you know about this.
00:11:08If you think I'm going to submit to a cross-examination tonight, you're sadly mistaken.
00:11:12Good night.
00:11:15Now see what you did.
00:11:18T.
00:11:19What did I do?
00:11:20What's eating them anyway?
00:11:21Oh, please forgive her.
00:11:22She's been under a great strain.
00:11:24We all have been.
00:11:25Perhaps it would be better to wait till morning.
00:11:27Good night's sleep will do us all some good.
00:11:29That's okay with me.
00:11:30I'm in no hurry.
00:11:31Would you have Cedric show Mr. Train to his room?
00:11:32Cedric.
00:11:33Now, if you'll pardon me, I'll go to my room too.
00:11:44Hate and death are in this house.
00:11:47If you're wise, you leave right now.
00:11:51Come along, George.
00:11:58Is she on the level?
00:11:59Yes, but she doesn't mean a thing.
00:12:01Delia thinks she has psychic powers.
00:12:03There isn't a cult that she doesn't belong to.
00:12:05Looks like she'd make a good zombie.
00:12:07You'll get used to her.
00:12:09Well, I think I'll be getting home.
00:12:10You live far from here?
00:12:11No, just out and back in the guest house.
00:12:13If you get a chance tomorrow, drop in.
00:12:15I'd like to talk to you.
00:12:16Thanks, I will.
00:12:17Good night.
00:12:18Good night, Miss Hilton.
00:12:19Good night.
00:12:20I'm beginning to think that everybody around here is a little bit nutty except us.
00:12:25And I have my doubts about us.
00:12:27Want me to drive you back to your listening post?
00:12:28Very funny.
00:12:29Very funny.
00:12:30Supposing you tell me all you know.
00:12:32Go ahead.
00:12:33I'm listening.
00:12:34Two dollars an hour?
00:12:35No, this one's on me.
00:12:36When was Mr. Craig last seen?
00:12:38Night before last.
00:12:39He went to his room about 11 o'clock.
00:12:41No one seen or heard from him since.
00:12:42Well, didn't his wife hear him get up?
00:12:44No, they have different rooms.
00:12:45Oh.
00:12:46Personally, I don't go for that kind of a marriage.
00:12:48Where were you then?
00:12:49I was in my room.
00:12:50What were you doing?
00:12:51I was in Dresden.
00:12:52What's that got to do with it?
00:12:54Oh, nothing.
00:12:55Just a healthy curiosity.
00:12:56Well, please go ahead as they say in the DA's office.
00:12:59Very well.
00:13:00In the morning, the butler found Mr. Craig's bed hadn't been slept in.
00:13:03And you haven't had word of him since?
00:13:04No.
00:13:05Everyone's at their wit's end.
00:13:06Judging from what I saw here tonight, they didn't have far to go.
00:13:09Mr. Trane.
00:13:10Just call me Nick.
00:13:11How long have the Craig's been married?
00:13:13Three years.
00:13:14Mr. Craig lost his first wife when Tina was 12.
00:13:16Tina, that's the little spitfire that started the walkout, huh?
00:13:19Yes.
00:13:20No love lost between them, I take it.
00:13:22Amazing bit of deduction, Mr. Trane.
00:13:24Allow me to congratulate you.
00:13:25Oh, I'm very clever that way.
00:13:27You get used to me.
00:13:30Where did you hide the body?
00:13:33Why?
00:13:34Why, for two pins, I'd slug you.
00:13:36Oh, don't take it that way.
00:13:38I just thought if you killed him, I'd find out right away and save a lot of time around here.
00:13:41Mr. Trane, do I look like a murderess?
00:13:44No.
00:13:45But you look very interesting.
00:13:47I ought to twist that sympathetic ear of yours.
00:13:49What?
00:13:50Deprive me of my levy?
00:13:52You rang, Miss Hilton?
00:13:54Yes, Edric.
00:13:55Will you please show Mr. Trane to one of the guest rooms?
00:13:57Very good, Miss.
00:13:58Will you follow me, sir?
00:13:59I'd prefer it that way.
00:14:01Well, so long.
00:14:02I'll see you in my dreams.
00:14:04If I see you in mine, it'll be a nightmare.
00:14:06Here you are, sir.
00:14:07Okay.
00:14:08That'll do.
00:14:09Very good, sir.
00:14:10Oh, uh, hey.
00:14:11You, Cedric.
00:14:12How much do you charge to hoard a house?
00:14:13I don't know, sir.
00:14:14How much do you usually charge?
00:14:15Oh, a drip, huh?
00:14:16I don't know, sir.
00:14:17How much do you usually charge?
00:14:19Oh, I get the winner, cuz I got me here.
00:14:23There they have.
00:14:25No bigills or anything.
00:14:26You, I don't know.
00:14:27Here you are, sir.
00:14:28Okay.
00:14:29That'll do.
00:14:30Very good, sir.
00:14:31Oh, hey.
00:14:32You, Cedric.
00:14:33How much do you charge to hoard a house?
00:14:36I don't know, sir.
00:14:37How much do you usually charge?
00:14:40Ha-ha, ha.
00:14:41Oh, a drip, huh?
00:14:43Ah!
00:14:44Oh!
00:14:45Ah!
00:14:46Oh, no, no, no.
00:14:56Where's that company?
00:14:58Now stay there.
00:15:00I heard you.
00:15:02Oh, no.
00:15:08Mrs. Phillips, Mrs. Phillips.
00:15:10What's the matter?
00:15:12Put yourself together and tell us what happened.
00:15:14Oh, Mr. Craig.
00:15:18Dad, Dad.
00:15:22Is he dead?
00:15:24No, he's alive all right.
00:15:28Better get a doctor right away.
00:15:30Martha, get a doctor, quick.
00:15:32Somebody help me carry him up to his room.
00:15:34Allow me, sir.
00:15:36Don't you ever sleep?
00:15:38No, sir. Insomnia.
00:15:44Insomnia, huh?
00:15:46I'll bet he's got it so bad he can't even sleep when it's time to get up.
00:15:58Oh, good morning, Miss Milley.
00:16:00Good morning, sir.
00:16:01Requires everybody.
00:16:02In the living room, sir.
00:16:03Thanks.
00:16:04Good morning, Helen.
00:16:05Oh, Ed, this is terrible, terrible.
00:16:06Oh, there, there.
00:16:07Now I'm sure he's going to be all right.
00:16:08Hello, Tina.
00:16:09Hello, aren't you?
00:16:10Hello, Ed.
00:16:11Hello, Nick.
00:16:12What did the doctor say?
00:16:13I don't know yet.
00:16:14He's still upstairs with him.
00:16:15Strange, very strange.
00:16:16What do you make of it?
00:16:17You got me, but a guy doesn't walk out of this house in the middle of the night and come back in that condition without somebody pulling a fast one.
00:16:19I warned you last night, young man, but you wouldn't listen. The Ascended Spirit has ordained a punishment.
00:16:24You said it, sir.
00:16:25No, sir.
00:16:26No, sir.
00:16:27No, sir.
00:16:28No, sir.
00:16:29No, sir.
00:16:30No, sir.
00:16:31No, sir.
00:16:32No, sir.
00:16:33No, sir.
00:16:34No, sir.
00:16:35No, sir.
00:16:36No, sir.
00:16:37No, sir.
00:16:38No, sir.
00:16:39No, sir.
00:16:40You said it, sister.
00:16:42That which is ordained is ordained.
00:16:44The truth will burn its mark upon the spirits.
00:16:48That which is ordained is ordained.
00:16:50In ascendance will be found complete perfection.
00:16:54That which is ordained is ordained.
00:16:57We will talk again, Mr. Train.
00:17:00Yeah, ma'am.
00:17:01I mean, sister.
00:17:10If somebody comes around here with a butterfly and that, I'll know who they're after.
00:17:29How is he, doctor?
00:17:30Well, I can't tell you.
00:17:31I've never seen a case quite like this one.
00:17:34So I hesitate to make a diagnosis without consultation.
00:17:37Well, is he in pain?
00:17:39No.
00:17:40There is no pain.
00:17:41But, doctor, what happened to him?
00:17:42I'm sorry to say that Mr. Craig has suffered a severe brain injury.
00:17:45Brain injury?
00:17:46Yes.
00:17:47I'll arrange with Dr. Bruling, a brain specialist, to see him at once.
00:17:51Until then, I can tell you nothing.
00:17:53Oh, poor Walter.
00:17:55Oh, doctor.
00:17:58I'd like to have a little talk with you.
00:18:00Yes, Mr. Train.
00:18:01What do you think about the...
00:18:03Let's go in the library.
00:18:12Say, doc, did you find any evidence of violence?
00:18:14No, nothing at all.
00:18:16Strictly between us, what do you think of his chances?
00:18:18I can't tell.
00:18:19Can't or won't?
00:18:20I can't.
00:18:21I'm the sympathetic listening ear around here, Jeeves.
00:18:25I beg your pardon, sir.
00:18:26Okay.
00:18:28Why must there be a butler in every murder mystery?
00:18:31I'm sorry, doc.
00:18:32Do you think Mr. Craig could have come back to this house by himself in his present condition?
00:18:36There's no evidence of paralysis.
00:18:38He can probably walk, but I doubt if he came back here unassisted.
00:18:42Well, thanks, doc.
00:18:43That's all I wanted to know.
00:18:44That's quite all right.
00:18:51Oh, Nick.
00:18:52Don't ever do a thing like that again.
00:18:53You scared me out of my wits.
00:18:54That makes two of us.
00:18:55Nick, how could this have all happened?
00:18:56I don't know.
00:18:57If Craig had been killed, an autopsy would establish a time and cause a death.
00:19:00But as it is in this present condition, you've got nothing to go by.
00:19:01You can only find out why.
00:19:02Yeah, that's the rub.
00:19:03If Craig had been killed, an autopsy would establish a time and cause a death.
00:19:12And as it is in this present condition, we've got nothing to go by.
00:19:16You can only find out why.
00:19:17Yeah, that's the rub.
00:19:18You can find out why and them were getting sick.
00:19:20All right, we'll get hurt.
00:19:21No problem, dr. Tell her.
00:19:22But as it is in this present condition, we've got nothing to go by.
00:19:25We can only find out why.
00:19:27Yeah, that's the rub.
00:19:28We can find out why, then we'll get in some place.
00:19:52Footprints.
00:20:00Somebody must have carried Craig through this window last night.
00:20:02Do you think it's someone in this house?
00:20:04Now, don't try to pin me down. I'm only guessing.
00:20:06Those look like prints made from rubber overshoes.
00:20:09I wonder who's they could be.
00:20:10That's where you come in.
00:20:11Try and find the shoes that fit those prints.
00:20:14What are you two doing?
00:20:15Oh, I'm just talking about the weather.
00:20:18Incidentally, where were you doing the rain last night?
00:20:19In bed. Sound asleep.
00:20:21Can you prove it?
00:20:22I regret saying no. I sleep alone.
00:20:25Kind of lonesome, isn't it?
00:20:27Nice shoes you've got on. Brand new, aren't they?
00:20:29Yes.
00:20:30Say, what do my shoes got to do with this?
00:20:31Oh, nothing. I hope.
00:20:34Well, I'll be back in a jiffy. I just want to talk to somebody.
00:20:44Come here.
00:20:45Come on, boy.
00:20:46Come on, get in the house.
00:20:47Sorry, Mr. Train.
00:20:53Blitz barks a lot, but I know he wouldn't bite you.
00:20:56But does he know it?
00:20:58Say, how about that little talk we're going to have?
00:21:00Surely. Come on inside.
00:21:01Sit down.
00:21:07Thanks.
00:21:07Smoke?
00:21:08Sure.
00:21:08You know, I can't tell you how shocked I am about Walter.
00:21:13Best friend I have.
00:21:14When the doctor made me quit work on account of my heart, Walter insisted that I come here and live.
00:21:18That was nice of him.
00:21:20Poor chap.
00:21:20You know, I'd give him my right arm to be able to help him.
00:21:23Well, since you know him so well, I suppose you'd tell me something about him.
00:21:25Oh, Walter's a fine man.
00:21:27Generous and good to a fault.
00:21:29He was pretty lonely after the death of his first wife.
00:21:31And about three years ago, he married Helen.
00:21:34Met her in Moline's office, but...
00:21:36Moline's office?
00:21:37Yes.
00:21:38She was his secretary.
00:21:40The Craig's are, oh, I guess you'd call it snobbish, and it wasn't very easy for her at first.
00:21:44But she came through like a trooper, and now everybody likes her.
00:21:47Yeah?
00:21:48There seems to be two trains of thought on that subject.
00:21:50Oh, if it's Tina you're referring to, that's because she's young, and I regret to say selfish.
00:21:56How about the Phillips?
00:21:57Well, George Phillips has been a failure all his life.
00:22:00He's made a bitter woman of Delia.
00:22:02One reason she turned to Coles.
00:22:04Have there been any clashes between members of the family?
00:22:06Not to my knowledge.
00:22:07Well, with the exception of Tina and her stepmother.
00:22:10Well, I guess I'd better get back.
00:22:12Well, if I can be of any further service.
00:22:14Thanks, I may call on you.
00:22:20Oh, Nick, where in the world have you been?
00:22:22We've been looking all over for you.
00:22:23Dr. Bruling, the specialist, is here.
00:22:24He's upstairs with Dr. Taggart now.
00:22:26Good.
00:22:26I want to talk to them along.
00:22:28Oh, Ed, if Craig died, who'd inherit the estate?
00:22:30Most of it would go to Tina.
00:22:32What?
00:22:32Oh, nothing.
00:22:33I'm sorry to bust in this way, but I'd like to have a few words with Dr. Bruling.
00:22:42This is Mr. Train.
00:22:44Mrs. Craig has engaged him as a special investigator.
00:22:46Hiya, Doc.
00:22:46What's wrong with him?
00:22:47Mr. Craig may not regain possession of his mental faculties for perhaps a year or two.
00:22:52Poor guy.
00:22:54It isn't amnesia, is it?
00:22:55No, no, no.
00:22:55In Mr. Craig's case, the cells of the cortex of the brain are paralyzed.
00:23:00Well, how could that happen?
00:23:01I'm a Dr. Young man, not a clairvoyant.
00:23:03Does he have to stay in bed?
00:23:04Oh, no, no.
00:23:05He can walk, but he shouldn't be permitted to do so alone.
00:23:08Therefore, he'll require constant watching.
00:23:11Okay, Doc.
00:23:11Thanks a lot.
00:23:16Mr. Train.
00:23:19Oh, hello, Mr. Wallace.
00:23:20What's on your mind?
00:23:21Where can we talk?
00:23:22Huh?
00:23:22I say, where can we talk?
00:23:25Oh.
00:23:26Come into my room.
00:23:31Go ahead, shoot.
00:23:36Mr. Train, in view of what happened, I think you ought to know everything.
00:23:40Yeah, I agree with you there.
00:23:42If it wasn't for Mr. Craig being found in that condition this morning, I wouldn't have thought
00:23:46anything about it.
00:23:47Neither would I.
00:23:48Then you know.
00:23:49What?
00:23:49What I'm about to tell you.
00:23:51Oh, for the love of my, get to the point.
00:23:52So far, you've told me nothing except that you didn't want to tell it to me.
00:23:55Well, that's right, I didn't.
00:23:57But the more I thought of it, the more convinced I became that you had a right to know.
00:24:01To know what?
00:24:02Spill it, will you?
00:24:03Spill it.
00:24:04Please, please, not so loud.
00:24:06You'll hear it.
00:24:07Who hear what?
00:24:08What is this, a game?
00:24:09If it is, let me in on it.
00:24:10I'll play.
00:24:11Do you know who I saw in the garden late last night?
00:24:14I'll bite, Mr. Bones.
00:24:15Who did you see in the garden late last night?
00:24:18George Phillips.
00:24:20Are you sure?
00:24:21Certainly.
00:24:22I can see him clearly from my window.
00:24:23Doesn't anybody sleep around here at night?
00:24:26Well, the banging of the shutters woke me, and when I went to close them, I saw him.
00:24:30Was he alone?
00:24:31As far as I could see.
00:24:33Do you, can you possibly conceive that George Phillips was the one who, who, who brought Craig back?
00:24:39I don't know.
00:24:41Imagine George doing that to Mr. Craig.
00:24:44It's too monstrous to conceive.
00:24:46I guess that's why you thought of it.
00:24:48Well, I, I must go now.
00:24:50You won't say anything about this to anyone, will you?
00:24:55I wouldn't tell a soul, not even George.
00:24:57He might not like it.
00:24:59Thanks.
00:25:00Oh, Nick, I, oh, hello, Mr. Wallace.
00:25:03How do you do, Miss Hilton?
00:25:04Say, those are my overshoes.
00:25:06What are you doing with them?
00:25:07Oh, I, I just thought I might be going out tonight in case it rained.
00:25:10I'd be all ready.
00:25:11Well, you might at least have asked me for them.
00:25:13Nick, Nick, those, those shoes match the prints we saw in the garden.
00:25:20No kidding?
00:25:21Yeah.
00:25:22Well, why did you give them to him?
00:25:23Why did I give them to him?
00:25:24He just took them away from me while you stood there looking like a dope.
00:25:27How was I supposed to know that those were the rubber shoes?
00:25:29Well, what do you think I was doing, collecting for the rubber drive?
00:25:31All right, all right.
00:25:32Anybody would think we were married the way you yell at him.
00:25:36Say, that's funny.
00:25:37Do you know why he was here?
00:25:38Give you a written confession, I suppose.
00:25:40Oh, cut the sarcasm.
00:25:41Where's Phillips' room?
00:25:42Down the hall by the stairs.
00:25:43Well, let's go down the hall by the staircase.
00:25:47Oh, Mr. Phillips, I'd like to talk to you.
00:25:50Not here.
00:25:52Meet me in the garden at eight o'clock.
00:25:57I beg your pardon, sir.
00:26:02Well, Dracula, the bottles for you could certainly show up at the most inopportune times.
00:26:08Come on.
00:26:13Hey, I'll tackle this hair.
00:26:14I'll do that.
00:26:15You could probably hear him.
00:26:24Hey, for you.
00:26:30I'll do that.
00:26:31I'll do that, too.
00:26:31I'll go ahead and try to stretch it into my house.
00:26:32I'll do that.
00:26:32I'll do it.
00:26:33I'll do that.
00:26:33I'll pull it up after the hábit.
00:26:33You can onlyそ the salaam refine your life.
00:26:35You can only soak this nurse in my neck, but I'll turn it into my mind.
00:26:35Mr. Craig, what have you done?
00:26:56Phillips.
00:26:58Oh, Mr. Craig, why did you ever want to...
00:27:05Mr. Craig, how in the world did you ever do...
00:27:24Say, what's the big idea?
00:27:26That's what I want to find out. Now start talking and fast.
00:27:28What do you mean?
00:27:29Oh, don't play any dumber than you are. Did you kill George?
00:27:32George, George dead?
00:27:34I don't believe it.
00:27:35Well, if you don't believe it, go and ask him. He's over there.
00:27:38I don't know anything about...
00:27:39Oh, of course not.
00:27:41And I suppose you're wearing gloves on a warm night because you don't want to soil your hands shooting people.
00:27:44But he was stabbed.
00:27:46Oh, if you didn't know he was dead, how did you know he was stabbed, not shot?
00:27:49Well, I... I don't know. I...
00:27:51Yeah, you just guessed it.
00:27:53Well, I'll give you a chance to explain it to the police.
00:27:54Okay.
00:28:04The coroner find out anything, Pete?
00:28:06Just that he's dead.
00:28:07Great. That makes it official.
00:28:08It's a funny thing, but no sooner do you get back in this racket than someone gets killed.
00:28:12Maybe my face scared him into suicide.
00:28:14Yeah, maybe it did.
00:28:15All right, Junior. What have you got to say for yourself?
00:28:18Yeah, all we want is a signed confession and we can all go home.
00:28:22You can't intimidate me.
00:28:23I know my rights.
00:28:25I won't say anything without a lawyer.
00:28:27Hey, he wants a lawyer.
00:28:28Maybe he doesn't trust us.
00:28:29Come on, Buster. Start talking. I'm here to do business.
00:28:32My name is not Buster. It's Arthur Wallace.
00:28:35A very pretty name.
00:28:36But it doesn't explain why you killed Philip.
00:28:38I didn't kill him. I had nothing to do with it.
00:28:40What were you doing in the garden?
00:28:41I went there to meet Tina, Miss Craig.
00:28:45What about your gloves?
00:28:46Well, I... I've just driven up. I have an open car.
00:28:49And you're always where you gloves when you drive.
00:28:52Yes.
00:28:53How did you know?
00:28:54Look, this is a very simple matter.
00:28:58Just tell me why you bumped the guy off.
00:29:00I refuse to say any more without a lawyer.
00:29:02What did you do with your rubber booties?
00:29:04I... I won't answer that.
00:29:06Maybe he used them to fuckingize his tires.
00:29:08Ha! I never thought of that.
00:29:09Okay, you can go now.
00:29:11But don't leave the house.
00:29:13Call Miss Craig, will you?
00:29:18This murder ties up with what happened to old man Craig.
00:29:21When we crack one, we'll crack the other.
00:29:22What's Craig got to do with Philip's?
00:29:25Well, I found the old man standing over Philip's body.
00:29:27This is a fine time to tell me.
00:29:29I'm going to get him.
00:29:30What for?
00:29:31What for?
00:29:32Put him under arrest, that's what for.
00:29:33Oh, you might as well arrest those goldfish.
00:29:36Why?
00:29:36He doesn't know any more what it's all about than they do.
00:29:38What do you mean?
00:29:40I mean he's non-compus metus.
00:29:42Is that so?
00:29:44What's that?
00:29:45Well, he eats and sleeps all right, but he's in a fog.
00:29:48Gosh, batty?
00:29:49And how?
00:29:50But if you ask me, that's just a cover-up.
00:29:52He was planted there.
00:29:53Uh-oh.
00:29:54Here comes the personality kid.
00:29:57Did you want to see me?
00:29:59Mm-hmm.
00:30:00Sit down, Miss Craig.
00:30:01I'd rather stand, if you don't mind.
00:30:03It's okay with me.
00:30:04Your boyfriend's in a jam.
00:30:06A lame brain like you would get anybody in a jam.
00:30:08You wouldn't know a murderer if he had a sign on his back.
00:30:11Looks like she knows you, Nick.
00:30:12Are you supposed to be at Buster tonight?
00:30:15If you're referring to my fiancé, yes.
00:30:18When?
00:30:19At 8 o'clock.
00:30:20Where?
00:30:21In the garden.
00:30:21Why the garden?
00:30:22Well, I saw Billy examining his rubber shoes.
00:30:26And knowing how she feels about you, I figured it was for your benefit.
00:30:30What do you mean, uh, how she feels about me?
00:30:33Don't get all swelled up, Mr. Train.
00:30:36Billy never did have any taste to speak of.
00:30:38Come on, let's get on with this.
00:30:41Where were you between dinner and 8 o'clock?
00:30:42My room and stayed there until 10 minutes.
00:30:44Then I went down to the library, but no one was around, so I went back upstairs.
00:30:48I stayed there until 8 o'clock.
00:30:49How did you know the exact time?
00:30:51I learned to time at the age of 5.
00:30:55Anyway, when I came back downstairs, Sherlock Holmes here was playing cops and robbers with my fiancé.
00:31:00Anything you want to say?
00:31:02Plenty.
00:31:02But it wouldn't be fit for her dainty little ears.
00:31:05If you masterminds would question my sweet stepmother, you might get somewhere.
00:31:09We intend to, lady.
00:31:11We intend to.
00:31:12Okay, you can go now.
00:31:18Isn't she sweet, though?
00:31:20Tell us, where are we after dinner?
00:31:22Why, I went back to my cottage and stayed there until Cedric told me what had happened, and then I hurried here.
00:31:27Anybody in your cottage with you?
00:31:29Just Blitz.
00:31:30We'll question that Blitz guy next.
00:31:31Finnegan, go get Mr. Blitz.
00:31:33Blitz is Mr. Weldon's dog.
00:31:35Why don't someone tell me these things?
00:31:43Where did you go after dinner?
00:31:44I went into the library.
00:31:46Were you there all the time?
00:31:47Yes, until I heard Arthur and Nick arguing in the garden.
00:31:49That was about five minutes after 8, wasn't it?
00:31:51I think so.
00:31:52Anybody come into the library while you were there?
00:31:53No.
00:31:54How come Tina Craig didn't see you when she went in the library a quarter of 8?
00:31:58Well, I must have been looking at those books and...
00:32:00Because you weren't in the library.
00:32:01You were out taking Philip's temperature with a knife.
00:32:03If that's read Philip's, why should I want to kill George?
00:32:05That's just what I want to find out.
00:32:06Now look, Ed.
00:32:07Either you're lying or Tina Craig is.
00:32:09Which is it?
00:32:10All right.
00:32:11I did leave the library.
00:32:12Where'd you go?
00:32:13Out into the garden.
00:32:14Did you see George Phillips?
00:32:16Yes.
00:32:16He appeared nervous, and he walked away as I approached him.
00:32:19So I let him alone, and then I came back into the house.
00:32:21Why didn't you tell us this before?
00:32:22Because I didn't want to lay myself open to suspicion.
00:32:25That don't sound kosher to me.
00:32:27You must admit it wasn't very bright on your part, Ed.
00:32:29Oh, perhaps not, but it's the truth.
00:32:31Okay.
00:32:32You can go now.
00:32:37Oh.
00:32:37Why do I get mixed up in these things?
00:32:42Why can't it be like the good old days?
00:32:44When a murderer killed somebody he was mad at and left a flock of fingerprints.
00:32:52Look, honey.
00:32:52Tell Dr. Bruling Nick Trane wants to see him right away.
00:32:55Have you an appointment?
00:32:55No, but this is very important.
00:32:57All of Dr. Bruling's cases are important.
00:32:59Just what's wrong with you?
00:33:00Listen, sister.
00:33:01Dr. Bruling insists that I find out as much as I can from the patients before he sees them.
00:33:06Okay, if you insist.
00:33:14That'll be enough.
00:33:15Well, you asked me.
00:33:18Besides, I thought nurses knew all about those things.
00:33:25Dr. Bruling says you would.
00:33:27I thought he would.
00:33:31Hello, Mr. Trane.
00:33:37Hi, Doc.
00:33:39What's this nonsense you've been telling my nurse that your wooden leg needs lubricated?
00:33:43Well, she insisted I had to tell her something.
00:33:46I thought it was not.
00:33:47Sit down.
00:33:48Now, what's on your mind?
00:33:50Well, Dr. Bruling, yesterday you said something had happened to the cortex cells of Mr. Craig's brain.
00:33:54What did you mean by that?
00:33:55Well, in some way, Mr. Craig has been what we doctors call decorticated.
00:34:00Which means that a portion of the brain has been temporarily paralyzed.
00:34:05No kidding.
00:34:07Well, how could that happen to one part of the brain and not the rest?
00:34:09Well, perhaps I can explain it to you by the aid of this job.
00:34:12Come this way.
00:34:13As man developed during millions of years, so did the brain.
00:34:19As man found more functions to the body, the brain kept pace.
00:34:23Cells were developed to do new jobs.
00:34:26And the last of these cells were those of the cortex, which we refer to as the cortex cerebrate.
00:34:30Now, these cortex, they control these thinking, speaking, and all those things which men learned last.
00:34:37And as they were developed last, they were therefore the youngest, and they've always been the weakest.
00:34:42And they die before any other part of man's body.
00:34:44Now, young man, you get it?
00:34:48Well, I think so.
00:34:54So that's how it happened to Mr. Craig, huh?
00:34:56Exactly.
00:34:57Only in Mr. Craig's case, the cells are not dead, merely paralyzed.
00:35:00Well, this decortication, or whatever you call it, can this be done deliberately?
00:35:04That's the only way it can be done.
00:35:06Well, how is it done?
00:35:07Well, you see, these cells require a great deal of oxygen.
00:35:09If, while an anesthetic is being administered, certain chemicals are added, and the oxygen is cut too low,
00:35:15then the cortex cells are paralyzed.
00:35:17So you think that's what happened to Mr. Craig, huh?
00:35:19From my analysis, yes.
00:35:20Just exactly that.
00:35:21Can a thing like this happen accidentally?
00:35:23No.
00:35:24Never.
00:35:26Well, thanks, doctor.
00:35:27I think you've given me a pretty good idea what it's all about.
00:35:31Glad to be of any service.
00:35:32Oh, uh, one more thing, doc.
00:35:34Could Mr. Craig have stabbed Phillips?
00:35:36There's no telling what a man in Mr. Craig's condition could do.
00:35:40Well, thanks, doc.
00:35:47Some lubricator, doc.
00:35:55Good for another thousand miles.
00:35:57My, my, what talent.
00:36:17I also play the victroller.
00:36:18Now, I'm really impressed.
00:36:20Where's everybody tonight?
00:36:21Well, let's see.
00:36:22Dedrick's somewhere in the house.
00:36:23Helen's gone to bed and is resting.
00:36:25Delia's also gone to bed, having felt very badly all day.
00:36:27Tina and Arthur probably holding hands in some cozy corner.
00:36:30And Tony and Mr. Molina are upstairs, having decided to stay with the family until the crisis cleared up.
00:36:33Here I am.
00:36:34There you are.
00:36:34Which reminds me, Sherlock, where have you been all day?
00:36:36Huh?
00:36:37Oh, don't tell anybody.
00:36:38But I tracked down the murderers.
00:36:39Two of them.
00:36:40No.
00:36:40Yeah.
00:36:41I trail them to the hideout, but they discovered me.
00:36:43There was no escape.
00:36:43I didn't have a gun.
00:36:44They started to shoot at me.
00:36:45Well, how did you get away?
00:36:46I didn't.
00:36:46I was killed.
00:36:47Oh, Joe!
00:36:49Murderer.
00:36:52And I had to fall for no one like that.
00:36:54Is that the only thing you fell for?
00:36:56Exactly what do you mean?
00:36:59Well, Dame Rumor hath it that thou art that way about me.
00:37:03To put it subtly, Dame Rumor is nothing.
00:37:06Tina would resent that.
00:37:07Tina?
00:37:08So laughing girl's been making up stories about me, isn't she?
00:37:11She's right.
00:37:12Billy.
00:37:12Yes, I am that way about you, my love.
00:37:15In a way that wouldn't be fit to print.
00:37:22Nick.
00:37:23Oh, oh.
00:37:25You feel well?
00:37:27Oh, Nick.
00:37:29Whoa.
00:37:32Mr. Craig.
00:37:35Oh, Nick.
00:37:39Gee, that was close.
00:37:40Nick, I tried to warn you, but I lost my voice.
00:37:42Well, next time, put it someplace where you can find it.
00:37:44Quick.
00:37:45Another second, I've been wearing that for a collar button.
00:37:49Walter.
00:37:51Mr. Craig.
00:37:53What have you done to my father?
00:37:54What have I done?
00:37:56A second before that landed, I was sitting in the chair.
00:37:58And he was on the business end of that night.
00:38:00Good heavens, Nick.
00:38:00You don't mean to say he tried to kill you.
00:38:02Well, he wasn't going to give me a shave.
00:38:03Well, I can't understand it.
00:38:04Walter's always been such a gentle sort of a person.
00:38:06Allow me, please.
00:38:07Please.
00:38:07Just a minute.
00:38:18How did Mr. Craig get out of his room?
00:38:20I don't know.
00:38:21I left the room for just a few minutes to go to the kitchen to get some orange juice.
00:38:25When I got back, he was gone.
00:38:27Well, next time you leave the room, get somebody to take your place.
00:38:29Yes, sir.
00:38:31Nick.
00:38:32Nick, I'm scared.
00:38:34That's all right.
00:38:35So am I.
00:38:35Mr. Craig's residence.
00:38:42Who?
00:38:43Oh, just a moment, please.
00:38:44It's for you, Lieutenant Peterson.
00:38:48Hello, Pete.
00:38:49Did you get the information I asked you for?
00:38:53Good.
00:38:54Don't you say the name was Parson?
00:38:56No, Carson.
00:38:58C-A-R-S-O-N.
00:39:01Dr. J.B. Carson.
00:39:03He ordered the outfit by phone three weeks ago.
00:39:07Paid for it by money order.
00:39:08Said he was opening a sanitarium.
00:39:10He did?
00:39:11Where?
00:39:13Blakely Road?
00:39:14What's the number?
00:39:16Make a note of this.
00:39:17689 Blakely Road.
00:39:19And he left instructions that if no one was there, to leave it anyway.
00:39:23Which they did.
00:39:24Nobody's even seen him?
00:39:26Well, that's a big help.
00:39:27Say, Nick.
00:39:28What's this all about, anyway?
00:39:30I'll tell you later, Pete.
00:39:31Thanks.
00:39:31So long.
00:39:33Where's the extension here?
00:39:34Somebody listen in.
00:39:35I heard the click.
00:39:35It's upstairs in the home.
00:39:41Who's on that phone just now?
00:39:42I wouldn't know, sir.
00:39:43I just came out of Mr. Craig's room.
00:39:45You sure?
00:39:45Yes, sir.
00:39:48If I don't start collecting my old age passion, it won't be that guy's fault.
00:39:55Where are you taking me?
00:39:57To see a doctor.
00:39:58I'm not sick.
00:39:59Well, you may be after you see this fellow.
00:40:01His name is Dr. Carson, and I have a hunch it's the answer to our problem.
00:40:04Who's Dr. Carson?
00:40:05I don't know.
00:40:07But Pete told me he bought a cyclopropane outfit under strange circumstances.
00:40:10A cycloprop what outfit?
00:40:12Cyclopropane.
00:40:13It's an anesthetic machine.
00:40:14What's anesthetics got to do with this case?
00:40:16Well, I'll get Dr. Brewing to explain that to you someday, beautiful.
00:40:20Anyway, this Carson took over an old dilapidated house and said he was turning it into a sanitarium.
00:40:25What's so strange about that?
00:40:26Well, the strange part is he's not listed in any of the medical directories or even in the telephone book.
00:40:30And how are you going to know how to find him?
00:40:32Pete told me.
00:40:45This must be it.
00:40:46There's no other place for miles around.
00:40:48Funny-looking sanitarium.
00:40:49Yeah, maybe it isn't a sanitarium at all.
00:40:52Maybe he's not a doctor either.
00:40:56I'll bet this is one place George Washington really slept in.
00:40:58Yeah, and it was probably an antique even then.
00:41:06Those boards must have come off the front door.
00:41:07Somebody's been using this dump lately.
00:41:09Come on, let's try and get in.
00:41:10Oh, must we?
00:41:11Why not?
00:41:12You'll never find out what's inside if we don't.
00:41:13That won't make me mad.
00:41:15Oh, don't be a softie.
00:41:16I can't see a thing.
00:41:32What do we do now?
00:41:33Well, let's roam around.
00:41:34Maybe something will turn up.
00:41:35That's what I'm afraid of.
00:41:36I bet you could rent this joint cheap.
00:41:48Remember that name and address.
00:41:49Personally, I'd like something a little more modern.
00:41:51I'm not thinking of renting it.
00:41:53I may want to talk to this guy Hawkins.
00:41:55Boy, what a break.
00:42:20Now we can get in that open window up there.
00:42:22You mean you're actually going to go into this house?
00:42:24Why not?
00:42:25Why not, he says.
00:42:29Let go of it.
00:42:30What do you think I am?
00:42:30A midget?
00:42:33Hey, Nick.
00:42:34Nick, there's a storm coming up and I haven't even got a coat.
00:42:37Nick, go away now and come back some nice, bright, sunny day.
00:42:39Not me.
00:42:40I'm going up.
00:42:40You wait down here.
00:42:41Wait?
00:42:42Alone?
00:42:43Oh, no, brother.
00:42:44I'm coming with you.
00:42:46Oh!
00:42:51Look, don't.
00:42:52Don't ever do that again.
00:42:54I'm sorry, Nick, but I saw something in that window.
00:42:57Where?
00:42:57Up there.
00:43:00There's nothing there.
00:43:01I could have sworn I saw something moving.
00:43:03Oh, you must be seeing things.
00:43:05I hope.
00:43:06Oh, Nick, look.
00:43:06Let's go home before we get drenched.
00:43:08Please.
00:43:09Oh, quiet.
00:43:11Oh, hey, wait a minute.
00:43:12Wait for me.
00:43:13Why don't you watch where you're going?
00:43:22Sorry, Nick.
00:43:22Can I tell you to stay downstairs?
00:43:47Look, there's nobody here.
00:43:50Well, it's fine.
00:43:51Now that we know it, let's go.
00:43:52Come on.
00:43:52Don't be silly.
00:43:53We're going to search this place from top to bottom.
00:43:55Yeah, I was afraid of that.
00:44:00Don't do that.
00:44:01Why not?
00:44:02How am I going to run if you're holding on to me?
00:44:04Here, Edith.
00:44:29Here, Edith.
00:44:34Here, Edith.
00:45:04For the love of Mike Billy, don't do that.
00:45:15Oh, I'm sorry, Nick.
00:45:16I only wanted to ask you if you saw anything.
00:45:18No.
00:45:19Just goes to show you what funny tricks your imagination can play on you.
00:45:22Even funnier when both our imaginations play the same trick.
00:45:26Yeah.
00:45:34What's that?
00:45:39What's what?
00:45:41That.
00:45:43Must be mice.
00:45:44I wish you'd tell them to take their boots off.
00:45:46Oh, I'm all right, Nick.
00:46:10Maybe you are, but I'm not.
00:46:13Nick, this isn't any time for planes.
00:46:15Who's planes?
00:46:17Let's call it a day and go home, huh?
00:46:19All right.
00:46:21But first, I want to have a look down the cellar.
00:46:23All right.
00:46:35All right.
00:46:35All right.
00:46:36All right.
00:46:37I don't see any outfit here.
00:46:59Are you satisfied now?
00:47:00Yeah, I guess so.
00:47:01Looks like a wild goose chase.
00:47:03Yeah.
00:47:05Oh!
00:47:07Stay here.
00:47:37Let me out!
00:47:44Let me out!
00:47:45Open the door here!
00:47:46Open the door!
00:47:47What's the matter, Nick?
00:47:49It's all right, honey.
00:47:50Let me out!
00:47:51Let me out of here!
00:47:52Nick, what's the matter?
00:47:56What happened, Nick?
00:47:57Somebody locked us in.
00:48:00What are you going to do?
00:48:01I don't know.
00:48:02That looks like the only way out.
00:48:04Well, we might as well make ourselves comfortable.
00:48:07Looks like we're going to be here a long time.
00:48:09How long?
00:48:10Until somebody finds us.
00:48:12That might take weeks.
00:48:14Maybe months.
00:48:15By that time, beautiful, it won't make any difference.
00:48:19We might starve to death.
00:48:22If we don't go mad from first before that.
00:48:23Oh, Nick.
00:48:25Sit down.
00:48:29Billy, now that the end is near, there's something I want to tell you.
00:48:34Oh, don't talk like that, Nick.
00:48:35Well, we may as well face the truth unflinchingly.
00:48:39But before I die, I want you to know that I love you.
00:48:44And just being near you, well, makes me unafraid of death.
00:48:48Oh, Nick.
00:48:50Darling.
00:48:52Oh, darling, I'm sorry.
00:48:53I didn't mean half the things I said.
00:48:55I guess I was just fighting against my feelings for you.
00:48:58I've loved you, Nick.
00:48:59I've loved you right from the start.
00:49:02Oh, darling.
00:49:05Well, that's all I wanted to know.
00:49:11Let's get out of here.
00:49:12Get out of here?
00:49:13How?
00:49:13Why, just open the door and walk out.
00:49:16Oh, Lord, I love you.
00:49:18Why, I...
00:49:18Now, take it easy.
00:49:19There's no sense getting mad.
00:49:21Besides, I had to find out if you loved me, didn't I?
00:49:24I may never get a chance like that again.
00:49:25If I could love any man like you.
00:49:27Oh, now, honey, don't spoil it.
00:49:30It was a beautiful moment.
00:49:31Admit it.
00:49:32Something you'd be proud to tell of our children.
00:49:34Our children?
00:49:35I wouldn't contaminate the human race with our children.
00:49:37All right, all right.
00:49:38Let's finish it after we're married.
00:49:39Right now, I've got to go after that guy, Carson.
00:49:41Why, the idea of taking advantage of a girl like that.
00:49:44I...
00:49:44I don't want anything more to do with you.
00:49:45I never want to hear the name Train again.
00:49:47I never...
00:49:52Oh!
00:49:54Chuck!
00:50:03You stay there.
00:50:04Nick, be careful.
00:50:16Nick, be careful.
00:50:16Ah!
00:50:27Nick!
00:50:42Nick!
00:50:45Come on, get him up.
00:50:47Are you all right, honey?
00:50:49Oh, it's terrible.
00:50:50What happened to you?
00:50:52Who are you?
00:50:53Can't you speak?
00:50:54Why?
00:50:55He's just like Craig.
00:50:58Carson must have practiced on him.
00:51:01That cinches it.
00:51:02Come on, we've got work to do.
00:51:03Well, what about him?
00:51:05Oh, yeah.
00:51:06I'll lock him up and send Peterson right down here.
00:51:08You go out and get in the car.
00:51:08All right.
00:51:09Come on, pal.
00:51:12Homer, justice of the peace, deputy sheriff,
00:51:14air raid warden, and banjo lessons.
00:51:17I wonder what he does in his spare time.
00:51:22This guy rented a house to Carson.
00:51:23He ought to know what he looks like.
00:51:24He probably thought he shot at us, too,
00:51:26for waking him up this hour.
00:51:28Just a minute.
00:51:29Just a minute.
00:51:30Want to get married while we're here?
00:51:31No, thank you.
00:51:32When I get married, I'll do it in style.
00:51:33Organ, orange blossoms, bridal veil, homework.
00:51:36Kind of expensive.
00:51:37But when I crack this, I'll have 25 Gs.
00:51:39Do you think that'll cover the works?
00:51:41Oh, want to get married, eh?
00:51:43Yeah, but not right away.
00:51:45Um, are you Mr. Hawkins?
00:51:46Yep.
00:51:47Homer Hawkins.
00:51:48That's me.
00:51:48Well, tell me.
00:51:49Did you sell or rent a place on Blakely Road
00:51:51to a Dr. J.B. Carson?
00:51:53Carson?
00:51:53Carson, yes.
00:51:55Rented in the Greeley place about three weeks ago.
00:51:58Got a year's lease and six months rent in advance, too.
00:52:01My, my.
00:52:02This is picking up, isn't it?
00:52:03Yep.
00:52:04That's the second deal I put over in five years.
00:52:07I'm getting worried about my income tax now.
00:52:11What does Carson look like?
00:52:12I don't know.
00:52:13Never saw him.
00:52:14Well, you said you rented him the place.
00:52:16I did, over the phone.
00:52:18Sent me the money by mail, and I put the keys in the mailbox for it.
00:52:21What did he say when he called you out?
00:52:23Well, he said he was Dr. Carson and wanted to rent the house on Blakely Road.
00:52:27Would you recognize his voice if you heard it again?
00:52:30I reckon I would.
00:52:31Sure.
00:52:33Got pretty keen ears.
00:52:34Know every bird call there is.
00:52:35Well, thanks, Mr. Hawkins.
00:52:37I'll see you again.
00:52:38Maybe you can help me catch this bird.
00:52:41Say, did anybody ever tell you you look just like Skippy?
00:52:46Well, that's something.
00:52:48At least we found someone who knows Carson's voice.
00:52:50What does Carson's voice got to do with it?
00:52:52Well, maybe we can find out who he is through his voice.
00:52:56Good idea.
00:52:56Why don't we have Mr. Hawkins come for dinner?
00:52:58And then we can invite everybody in town, too, and make them say,
00:53:00this is Dr. Carson.
00:53:01I want to rent the house on Blakely Road.
00:53:03Don't be funny.
00:53:06Say, you've given me a great idea, sweetheart.
00:53:09What?
00:53:09Quiet, I'm thinking.
00:53:23How are we going to wake everybody up?
00:53:24I could scream.
00:53:25Oh, no, don't do that.
00:53:26They'll think somebody else is being murdered.
00:53:27Wait a minute.
00:53:32That ought to do it.
00:53:40Happy New Year!
00:53:41Happy New Year!
00:53:42Let me help you.
00:53:43Big!
00:53:43Big!
00:53:44Happy New Year!
00:53:45Happy New Year!
00:53:46Happy New Year!
00:53:51What's the idea of this?
00:53:52I'm sorry to wake up like this, folks,
00:53:54but I need the help of everyone in the house.
00:53:55At this hour, there's no time to lose, Buster.
00:53:57Stop calling me Buster.
00:53:58My name is Arthur Wallace.
00:53:59Arthur Wallace, I know.
00:54:00A very pretty name.
00:54:01Let's go in the living room with this more room.
00:54:03Go ahead and light the lights, will you, Jeeves?
00:54:05Come on, everybody.
00:54:06What can you do?
00:54:10Sit down, everybody, please.
00:54:14I've got a wild idea.
00:54:16Too wild to explain fully.
00:54:17Trust you for that.
00:54:18I want to make a recording of everybody's voice.
00:54:20A recording at this time of the night?
00:54:23You must be insane.
00:54:24If you think I'm going to play games at this time of the night,
00:54:27you've got another guest coming.
00:54:28I'm going back to sleep.
00:54:29So am I.
00:54:30Now, wait a minute.
00:54:32Now, get this and get it straight, all of you.
00:54:34I was hired for a purpose, and I'm tired of fooling around.
00:54:37Now, I mean business.
00:54:38Do you understand?
00:54:39Either you'll cooperate with me,
00:54:40or I'll put the lot of you in jail,
00:54:41and don't think I can't do it either.
00:54:43Now, sit down!
00:54:43Now, you must admit that what you're asking is rather strange.
00:54:49That's putting it mildly.
00:54:50I agree.
00:54:51However, if there's anything that we can do to help,
00:54:54I'm quite sure we're all willing to cooperate.
00:54:56Well, I'm not.
00:54:57Good.
00:54:57That's settled.
00:54:58Well, might we ask a reason for all this, Mr. Train?
00:55:00Certainly.
00:55:01I have a hunch this will show us
00:55:02who's responsible for Mr. Craig's condition
00:55:04and Philip's murder.
00:55:05If that's the case, Mr. Train,
00:55:07we'll be glad to do anything you want.
00:55:09I thought you would.
00:55:11Now, I'd like to have each one of you
00:55:12step up to this microphone
00:55:13and speak naturally
00:55:13so it sounds like a voice over the phone.
00:55:15Is there anything in particular
00:55:16you'd like us to say?
00:55:17Yeah, I'd like to have you say,
00:55:18this is Dr. Carson.
00:55:19I want to rent the house on Blakely Road.
00:55:22Who wants to make the first recording?
00:55:24Oh, I'll be the first, guinea pig.
00:55:25Oh, thanks, Ed.
00:55:26Here.
00:55:27Now, say, this is Dr. Carson.
00:55:28I want to rent the house on Blakely Road.
00:55:32This is Dr. Carson.
00:55:32Oh, wait a minute.
00:55:33Wait a minute.
00:55:36All right, go ahead.
00:55:37This is Dr. Carson.
00:55:39I'd like to rent the house on Blakely Road.
00:55:41This is Dr. Carson.
00:55:43I want to rent the house on Blakely Road.
00:55:49This is Dr. Carson.
00:55:50I want to rent the house on Blakely Road.
00:55:53This is Dr. Carson.
00:55:54I want to rent the house on Blakely Road.
00:55:57Thanks, Chiefs.
00:55:58This is a lot of childish nonsense.
00:56:02Who is this Dr. Carson?
00:56:03I'll tell you in the morning.
00:56:04Good night, everybody, and thanks.
00:56:14I think we got it.
00:56:15I think I'll be right back.
00:56:19I think you'll be right back.
00:56:20I'll give it back.
00:56:26I think I'll sign it.
00:56:27Come on.
00:56:57You know any good pillars like that?
00:57:01Oh, so you want to play, huh?
00:57:15Give me the police department.
00:57:18I want to talk to Lieutenant Peterson.
00:57:24Oh, so you're in it too, huh, beautiful?
00:57:28Nice work, kid.
00:57:29I'll get you a police badge for this.
00:57:31Oh!
00:57:33Oh, hello, Pete.
00:57:35Sorry to keep you waiting, but I think you'd better get over here right away.
00:57:38Yeah, Craig's house.
00:57:40Oh, I'll tell you all about it when I see you.
00:57:41All right, take him away.
00:57:52Come on, that means you.
00:57:53Just imagine Tony and Helen being in this thing together.
00:58:03I still can't understand why they did it.
00:58:05The reason is simple.
00:58:06Tina was left the estate in Craig's will, so Helen wouldn't get a thing if he died.
00:58:10But with him alive and temporarily incapable of handling his affairs, Helen would have complete charge of the estate and could do whatever she wanted.
00:58:17How did Weldon figure it out?
00:58:18Mrs. Craig was in love with him.
00:58:20Craig found it out, so Weldon put him in that condition.
00:58:22Well, how did you know they were in love?
00:58:24I didn't until she admitted it after taking a shot at me.
00:58:27But why was Uncle George killed?
00:58:28He saw Tony Weldon sneaking out of the house the morning her father was brought back.
00:58:32So Tony killed him to keep him from talking.
00:58:34Well, what about Dr. Carson?
00:58:35Dr. Carson and Tony are one and the same.
00:58:37Ah, so that's the reason for the recording.
00:58:39Right.
00:58:40I figured if I could scare the murderer into believing the recordings would give him away, that he'd try to get rid of the records, and me too.
00:58:46And it worked out perfectly.
00:58:47That's what I call being on the beam, huh?
00:58:50Well, I guess I'm just a sap after all.
00:58:52Putting the finger on a woman that was going to pay me 25 G's.
00:58:56Well, there goes our future, honey.
00:58:58I'm sorry.
00:58:59I guess I owe you an apology for the way I treated you, Mr. Train.
00:59:03Would a check for $25,000 take care of that?
00:59:05Would a check for $25,000?
00:59:07What?
00:59:07Say, you're a honey after all.
00:59:10Put it there.
00:59:12Come on, we've got a little business for Hawkins.
00:59:14Oh, but darling, I want to get married with all the trimmings.
00:59:16I'll give you the trimmings after we're married.
00:59:17Come on, Pete, I need you for a witness.
00:59:19$25,000.
00:59:23Come on.
00:59:24You don't know what you're in for.
00:59:33I don't know what I'm in for, huh?
00:59:36Come on, honey.
00:59:37Wait a minute.
00:59:39Wait a minute.
00:59:41Seems to me I promised you something else when I took this case.
00:59:44What did you promise me, darling?
00:59:47Oh, no, you wouldn't dare.
00:59:48Wouldn't I?
00:59:50Oh, no, Nick!
00:59:52Oh, no!
00:59:54No!
00:59:55Nick, you're right!
00:59:56Nick, you're right!
