00:01Eight months ago, the race of a lifetime began.
00:06Let's go! Oh, my God. There we go. Come on.
00:11As five pairs of Brits embarked on a 15,000-kilometre journey.
00:17Quickly! Come on!
00:19Oh, my God. This is stressful.
00:21From Sapporo, Japan, to the island of Lombok in Indonesia,
00:26the team's traversed seven vastly different countries.
00:31Vietnam is nuts.
00:33Oh, this is going to be wicked.
00:35It's a village on the water. Yeah.
00:37This is testing the comfort zone to its absolute limit.
00:42But only one team could take home the prize of £20,000.
00:48Come on!
00:49And now they're reuniting for the first time since crossing the finish line.
00:54Yay!
00:56Gathered around one table.
00:58You didn't speak at all for 24 hours.
01:01It was guilt.
01:02To share unseen moments.
01:04There is a confession that I need to...
01:06Oh, no. Now you bring it up.
01:08I don't care. I'm throwing you in the mud there, mate.
01:10And shocking revelations.
01:13Aye, aye, aye!
01:14They explore what the race has taught them.
01:17Get out!
01:18Friday's bigger, I'm gonna find you.
01:21I'm Friday's biggest pack.
01:22I've always seen the world with dark-tinted glasses, I suppose,
01:27but now they're more like rose-tinted glasses.
01:30And for the first time, teams lift the curtain
01:33on how their journeys were filmed.
01:36They couldn't keep up with us. That was their problem.
01:38Yeah, yeah. Oh, we lost our crew once.
01:40Come on, Steven!
01:41As they look back...
01:43He's a liar.
01:44Would you have watched this get off?
01:45Happily, yeah.
01:46Come on, the boys are chasing you!
01:48Move it off!
01:49In a race across the world...
02:00Well, I think that's recording.
02:01The whole experience was phenomenal.
02:06That's not a word.
02:08Sometimes I look back, the time's just gone so quickly.
02:10Sometimes I look back and I think,
02:12did Israel might actually do that?
02:15It's been quite weird getting back to normal life.
02:17It wasn't like, ooh, is this a bit boring?
02:19Do I miss that unpredictability?
02:21And I think I do.
02:23Hi, Mum.
02:24Hey, guys, you all right?
02:26Good to you.
02:26You're looking good.
02:27Do you think we've been like a whirlwind this summer?
02:30Yeah, literally.
02:33It kind of feels like James and I
02:36have done this wild and wonderful thing,
02:39which involved the craziest times
02:42and meeting the most incredible people.
02:46Some exciting news.
02:46Me and my best friend are moving into a flat in Leeds,
02:49all thanks to the race, really, that's been able to come about
02:52because it allowed me to have that sort of independent mindset,
02:55allow me to go out there and see new things
02:56and try new things, experience new things.
02:58It's made you soppier.
02:59It's made you appreciate your children more.
03:01They have always said I am soppier.
03:02I know, you are.
03:03They said I've got to stop telling them I love them all the time.
03:05Sentimental.
03:07Ultimately, I thought that the race would kind of humble me
03:09in terms of my travels,
03:10but it's just kind of enhanced my desire to do it even more.
03:16I think about what we did on the race every single day.
03:19I'd like to thank Owen for giving me
03:21the greatest eight weeks of my life.
03:24It was difficult, it was impossible,
03:26I never want to do it again,
03:27but it was absolutely incredible
03:28and it was once in a lifetime.
03:31Is that even recording?
03:32Yes, it is.
03:33Having landed back on home turf six months ago,
03:37the five teams are seeing each other
03:39for the first time since the race.
03:42I'm quite excited about it, you know.
03:43I wonder what they've been up to.
03:45Husband and wife, Stephen and Viv.
03:47I'm there, I'm there!
03:49Hand on book, hand on book!
03:50Quick!
03:51Billy!
03:52Cheers.
03:54It's very grand, isn't it?
03:56It's a big bar.
03:57Can't say better than we've had before.
03:58I know.
03:59Oh my God!
04:01What the hell is going on?
04:03Betty's a rat!
04:04Whoa!
04:05Whoa!
04:07I feel a bit underdressed.
04:09It helps.
04:10It's a bit posh, isn't it?
04:11From Yorkshire, Betty and her younger brother, James.
04:15There it is!
04:16Hello.
04:17Hello.
04:18You all right?
04:19Is that James?
04:21Who is?
04:21That is them, that is them!
04:22He's nice though, but not nice enough to be on our tail.
04:25Mother and daughter, Sharon and Bridie.
04:28Hi!
04:29How are you?
04:31Well, when we come home we went to Italy, didn't we?
04:33We had a little trip by ourselves.
04:35Oh, right.
04:35We started off in Rome and we were going to end in Venice
04:37and then we ended up going to Florence and Pisa.
04:40Yeah.
04:41Yeah.
04:41Brilliant.
04:42And Diana and Brian were going, are you sure?
04:44Because that's different ends of Italy.
04:45We were going, we've got this!
04:47And finally, the competition's biggest race rivals...
04:56Eugenie and daughter Isabel...
04:58We will see you around.
05:00Yeah.
05:00Eugenie and Isabel are in front of us.
05:03Again.
05:03..and 21-year-old best friends Alfie and Owen.
05:07Come on, sir.
05:09It's like...
05:10Woo!
05:13How are you?
05:15Nice to see you.
05:16How are you?
05:17Nice to see you.
05:19We still don't know who's won.
05:21Oh, you don't?
05:22Yeah.
05:23Because obviously we were out of it.
05:24Who do you think it is?
05:25We do think it's either between Eugenie and Isabel or Owen and Alfie.
05:30Okay.
05:31So?
05:32The winners need to step forward after three.
05:34One, two, three.
05:35One, two, three.
05:37There you go.
05:38Yay!
05:39Well done.
05:40Congratulations.
05:42You deserve it.
05:42Yeah.
05:44Before entering the race, the teams had only weeks to prepare, but still had no idea where
05:51they were going or what lay in store.
05:54Until the day of departure.
05:57An aspect of the race that's never been discussed before.
06:01How much prep did you guys do?
06:03I weighed all my clothes.
06:05I mean, how much do knickers weigh, for goodness sake?
06:07I don't know.
06:08What do you see my underpants?
06:09I'm telling you.
06:1028 grams.
06:1128 grams.
06:12Get in.
06:13Microfiber knickers.
06:14Microfiber knickers.
06:15As opposed to my normal cotton knickers, which were like, I don't know, 60 grams.
06:19So, you know, gate changer.
06:21But we did do a bit of training, too.
06:23We ran up and down the garden as much as we could with the rubber side.
06:26Ready, steady?
06:26Go!
06:29Two days ago, we did a two-and-a-half-mile walk.
06:32I couldn't walk yesterday.
06:33Stephen couldn't walk yesterday.
06:37I bet your neighbours put wars going on with it.
06:40I think the hardest thing was not knowing where we were going, so you didn't know what
06:43climate it was going to be, you know, what clothing, how thick.
06:46You're going to have a strategy of, like, clean clothes at the bottom, or don't you?
06:49We're just going to shove it all in.
06:51OK.
06:52I don't know if this is too small for me.
06:54Put the hood up.
06:56See, walk off with you.
06:57That's the limestone.
06:59There, you see.
07:00Actually, that's not bad.
07:02Mine would be annoying.
07:03I'm taking my walking sticks.
07:04And your ugly shoes.
07:05And my ugly shoes, yes.
07:08Isabel was a bit worried about me, so you took us on a trek in the forest, didn't you?
07:12Yeah.
07:12We were putting, like, weights and backpacks and things.
07:14We had weights in our rucksacks and...
07:16Oh, my God.
07:16Up here.
07:17You started fasting, didn't you?
07:19Yeah, I fasted.
07:19Did, like, 2 24-hour fasts.
07:20Did you?
07:21Yeah.
07:21To, like, shrink my stomach.
07:23Yeah, yeah.
07:23Because I knew I wasn't probably going to eat that much.
07:26I ate because I knew I wasn't going to eat.
07:29Insulate.
07:30OK.
07:31So what would you do differently now?
07:32Bring a calculator.
07:33Calculator 1.
07:34I mean, my maths.
07:35There's nothing shorter than balancing.
07:36What we should have done is just taken every single bus route in the UK.
07:40Like, as many times as possible.
07:42I think now that we've done the race, we were learning, like, European languages.
07:45How many did you learn?
07:46Yeah.
07:47I already know Spanish, and then mum did French for quite a while, so it was just brushing
07:51up on that.
07:51That's serious preparation, then.
07:53And as soon as we landed in Japan, we're like, oh, for goodness sake.
07:55Like, this is just ridiculous.
07:57We literally did nothing.
07:59Well, it shows that, mum.
08:04Japan, where sacred traditions are fused with modern life.
08:09A melting pot of alpine mountain ranges, majestic landscapes, and megacities.
08:18A fitting place for the race to begin.
08:21The first thing I noticed about Japan was about how clean it was.
08:24Yeah.
08:24And yet there were no bins, no rubbish bins.
08:27Anywhere.
08:27And they were actually hoovering.
08:29We saw someone hoovering the rail with a little nozzle.
08:31With a nozzle.
08:33I liked the order.
08:34Quite liked the walls, I think.
08:36Because it's so different to London, kind of, where we've grown up.
08:39I can remember being very teary, actually.
08:42I welled.
08:43Because I thought, yes, because it was just like, wow, you know, Japan.
08:46It was just surprise and excitement that we were going so far.
08:51I think it was hard being so, like, panicked and rushed and, like, there's such a sense of calm in
08:56that country that, you know, there's so much order and control that we were all, like, running around trying to
09:00figure stuff out.
09:00I think that was the best country to start in.
09:03Mmm.
09:03It felt like that control.
09:05It might as well have just landed in Hanoi.
09:06Oh, exactly.
09:10You've been up to Japan before, haven't you?
09:12Yeah.
09:12We'll be great.
09:13For Betty and James, they started the race with very different experiences and expectations of travel.
09:20From quite a young age, I would say I've developed this kind of wanderlust.
09:23Wanting to explore, see the world, different cultures.
09:25Are you nervous?
09:27Yeah.
09:28My idea of travelling is getting drunk, really, with the boys.
09:32The island of Shikoku, that's calling to me.
09:35Race mode is in my head.
09:37I think city.
09:38Better transport route.
09:39Part of the reason why I'm on this race is to figure out, like, how to live life to the
09:43fullest.
09:44So, would you be happy to compromise?
09:46Uh, okay.
09:49It was long.
09:50It was draining.
09:52I actually don't know what to do.
09:54Having not spoken to each other that much in the past 21 years and not spent that much time together
10:00and not really knowing things about each other.
10:02Can we just slow down a tiny minute?
10:04No.
10:04Just in case you have to run?
10:06No.
10:06It was hard work.
10:10So, before the race, it was very much a case, like, we don't go to each other for anything.
10:14Like, I would never come to you for anything, would I?
10:15No.
10:16And vice versa.
10:17If it was a family gathering, we'd see each other and that was kind of that.
10:19But spending a lot of time 24-7 with each other, it kind of came apparent that we were going
10:24to need each other a little bit sometimes.
10:27We quite quickly learnt how to give each other the look, as if to say, like...
10:30Yeah, that's enough.
10:31Don't...
10:32Don't f***ing push it.
10:33Don't!
10:34Their relationship was put to the test when disaster struck travelling through Malaysia.
10:40Where's my bum bag?
10:42Oh, my God, I think I left it on the bus.
10:45There are passports in there.
10:46Shit.
10:49Here they are.
10:52Losing the passports was the lowest point of the race and was an absolute pivotal moment.
10:59Anywhere else you think you could have put them?
11:01No, it's on the bus.
11:03On the bus.
11:04This was like do or die, basically.
11:06We could be on a plane home tomorrow.
11:07And we were staying at this homestay.
11:09We were planning to kind of leave quite early in the next morning.
11:12And we had to wait till the next evening for that bus to come back.
11:16And you didn't speak to anyone for 24 hours.
11:19I literally couldn't speak.
11:20It was...it was guilt.
11:22Like, the way that I am naturally, I think of the worst case scenario.
11:24So, in my head, like, we were going home and that was my fault.
11:27And how do you ever, like...
11:29Well, there's no coming back from that.
11:30Coming back from that, exactly.
11:31In James' positive mind, he was like,
11:33Well, go fishing, it'll be great.
11:35It's the sunrise and look at that beautiful sunrise.
11:37And I was like, this is the last sunrise I'm ever going to see.
11:40What we wanted from the start was what?
11:42Beach, sea, chill, calm, peaceful.
11:46It's beautiful.
11:48If I had gone home that day,
11:51I'd have spent the last 24 hours, like, hating every moment.
11:54Something.
11:54I can't remember that.
12:03Thank you so much.
12:06After getting those passports back, I vowed to myself that every moment,
12:10whether it be a peak or a trough, I was going to enjoy it.
12:13Thank you so much.
12:20Okay, good game.
12:24I think from there, we didn't have a bad time because we just thought...
12:27Yeah.
12:29I remember looking out at the window and, like, just taking in views and I was just genuinely excited and
12:37happy and so grateful for being there.
12:42Through their hardship, Betty and James' relationship also blossomed, offering a sense of purpose Betty was seeking all along.
12:51I've always just wanted to have a more positive outlook on life and I've always tried to search for that
12:55at home, whether it be through journaling, meditation, like, finding a sport you love, whatever it is.
12:59But then I realised that probably all the answers just lay with.
13:02Aw.
13:03Lay with this one.
13:04You know, James kind of taught me about, like, living in the moment a bit more and I feel like
13:08you chase that sometimes and then you're never going to find it, but actually, spending a lot of time with
13:13James, I kind of learnt to do that a bit more.
13:18Oh, my God, is that a pint?
13:20No.
13:21Oh, it's a beer festival!
13:23Oh, it's meant to be!
13:25Woo!
13:27Your outlook on life is huge and I've always seen the world with dark-tinted glasses, I suppose.
13:34But now, they're more like rose-tinted glasses.
13:38It was this new outlook and connection between the siblings that led to emotional conversations and to Betty opening up
13:46about a rare condition affecting her fertility.
13:50Like, honestly, I forget that, you know, that you can't have children, like...
13:56Like, I mean, me and you have never had a conversation even about it, have you?
13:59No.
13:59I know that I'm meant to be a mum.
14:01It definitely feels like a relief to have kind of shared that story with James.
14:06Like, I've never probably just sat down and opened up someone the way that that happened.
14:11It's definitely made me, I think, develop a lot of, like, the negative attributes I have, like, opened and, like,
14:20wanting to feel in control because...
14:23I don't know, I just felt like at 16, like, something was taken away from me that I couldn't control.
14:29Yeah.
14:29Oh, come here.
14:31It's like a bit of acceptance that I've just been able to own it and say it for what it
14:35is.
14:36Quite a nice thing to know that, you know, she did feel I was capable of hearing it.
14:42It made me understand Betty's thought process a little bit more and what she actually does go through on her
14:46day-to-day.
14:47Oh, my God!
14:49Go, go, go!
14:51Having had the experience of the race, I've been a lot more proactive in certain areas of my life.
14:57James might not actually know this, so this is...
15:01But in terms of, like, my fertility side of things, I've decided to freeze my eggs, which is a big
15:06thing.
15:07I did know that.
15:08I only knew because my mum and dad told me.
15:09Well, they were talking about it, and I asked because I was frozen.
15:13Yeah.
15:15It's exciting.
15:16And I think before I would have been quite scared about that, but...
15:21It's about saying, like, there's an opportunity there and I'm going to take it because I'm worthy of having that
15:30opportunity and I'm capable of doing that.
15:33The team's travelled through seven countries over nearly eight weeks, meaning many details are not seen on screen.
15:40A side only hinted at is the harsh reality of 51 days on the road.
15:46I would have liked longer in Japan.
15:48But we're in a race, we've got to get going.
15:50All we're allowed is this.
15:52No phone, no card.
15:54No card.
15:54And every time we pull this out, people go, ha-ha.
15:57Yeah.
15:59Do you have a light?
16:01Light?
16:02This is a very what I've got myself into situation.
16:04What is happening?
16:06There we go.
16:09We knew the race would be tough.
16:10Not that tough though.
16:13We are about eight and a half hours into our 12 hour bus journey.
16:19And boredom has definitely sunk in.
16:24The roads are different here.
16:30Welcome to our bedroom.
16:32On the train.
16:33I feel like we've got a bit of cabin fever because we've been sort of stuck on the bed for
16:3636 hours.
16:37I can't wait to get out in the run seat.
16:39The realities of travel in that environment, on that budget, were stark.
16:45Yeah.
16:45It was hard work.
16:47It was exhausting.
16:4830 hours on a hard train seat, you know, yeah.
16:51The physical wasn't that bad.
16:53It was more the mental.
16:54You're always on the ball.
16:54You have to think about yourself and the other person and everything going on.
17:01Let me see that now.
17:03Jesus Christ.
17:04All right.
17:06So, I've realised that we've done a bit of a boo-boo.
17:09Quite a big boo-boo.
17:11Can you not say boo-boo please?
17:13When we got it up on the screen in the station, we thought it was like the stops.
17:17Turns out they're the changes that we need to make.
17:20Ah, brilliant.
17:22We had the emotional highs when things went right and we felt that we'd made great strides in the race
17:29and got a connection on a train or a bus.
17:32And then we had the emotional lows when things weren't going right.
17:36Oh, shit, there's only one ticket left.
17:41All we have to do is just accept the fact that we're not going to get to checkpoint.
17:45Today?
17:46At a time that's good.
17:50I thought before starting the race that, you know, they'd want to film a couple of hours a day, like,
17:55you know, maybe get in on the bus, but then they'd just let us chill.
17:58Oh, my God.
17:59Like, they're filming.
18:00Yeah.
18:01Constantly filming.
18:02Oh, my God.
18:02Oh, my God.
18:03And it didn't come off again until the evening when you went to the bus.
18:06Yeah.
18:07And some nights as well, yeah.
18:09A more practical necessity of race life was being followed by the film crew every step of the way.
18:18And for the first time, we reveal the arduous endeavour of life behind the scenes.
18:25So, what do you think I'm going to ask you?
18:27How do you feel today about the changes in the weather?
18:33I thought at the time, at the start of the race, that we just do and we just race and
18:39the camera people run round us and film what we do.
18:42But the teams of people and the background stuff that makes television is huge.
18:50Good luck.
18:51See you.
18:52See you somewhere.
18:53Whenever.
18:54We had a camera person.
18:55We had a sound person.
18:57Medic?
18:57Yeah, we had a medic.
18:58Second camera.
18:59Follow vehicle.
19:01I did feel for our crew on a number of occasions, like we would suddenly book tickets for a 30
19:06-hour ride.
19:07And they'd somehow have to get the logistics of getting the follow vehicle to the destination where we were going
19:13on.
19:13Or whilst they're having to do the bus themselves.
19:15Yes, exactly.
19:15Half the crew had to come with us on the train.
19:19The other half were dashing in a car in their vehicle to get ahead of us coming off of the
19:25train.
19:26You know, we just decided on the spur of the moment that we would buy these tickets and all hell
19:30would break loose.
19:31I think checkpoint crew, if you think you're sprinting to checkpoint to try to get it as fast as possible,
19:35there's always a guy with a camera on the floor.
19:38They couldn't keep up with us.
19:39That was their problem.
19:40Yeah, yeah.
19:41Oh, we lost our crew once.
19:42Come on, Stephen!
19:46There was once we ran to a train and we literally just jumped on it and the doors were closing.
19:50And I was like, oh, can we come back then?
19:53Come on in!
19:53We're like, get in!
19:55Can you sweep up us all?
19:56I could try.
19:59It took a lot of guessing you to do with the cameraman, but that was quite humorous to see.
20:03And we'd sometimes turn that into a competition.
20:05How fast could we walk to see if we can catch up?
20:07Oh, yeah, we'd play games.
20:07Or when he would start running.
20:08We would play games.
20:11Michael, does she roll her eyes a lot more?
20:12Michael, do I roll my eyes?
20:15Have you seen me rolling my eyes?
20:17Er, maybe once or twice, but it's between you two.
20:19I'm not going to roll.
20:20Yeah!
20:22Over time, it's always like we became kind of family.
20:27There's definitely some unsung heroes.
20:29Like the medic, he was...
20:30Oh, absolutely.
20:31Half the time you were like, what is he doing?
20:32But there was a couple of times he had to step in.
20:35Deep breath, fine.
20:37Fantastic.
20:38OK, let me down.
20:39That's great.
20:40It's all good besides dehydration.
20:42Everything is good, yeah.
20:43Yeah, I think you are a little bit dehydrated.
20:44That's why your pulse starts slightly.
20:46There was a time I got quite emotional.
20:48And, er, there was a point where I just couldn't do it anymore.
20:55Can someone just come and hug me, please?
20:59And it was our camera guy who just, like, put the camera down
21:04and just came over and, like, hugged me.
21:06I was crying into his shoulder.
21:08Yeah.
21:08OK.
21:09Sorry.
21:10Very sorry.
21:11You're good?
21:12Yeah.
21:12It was just something...
21:13That's lovely.
21:13...in a time of...
21:14There was definitely a bond.
21:15...in a time of need work, yeah.
21:16Yeah.
21:16And I think that's what we had with our crew.
21:19The whole thing is such a unique experience.
21:22It's not just about us.
21:24It's about the people you're with, the whole crew.
21:26This is why you have such a special bond with the other contestants.
21:29Because there's no-one that understands, apart from them, what you're doing.
21:33So, it is...
21:34It's very special.
21:40It was this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that appealed to daughter Bridie and mum Sharon,
21:46who were going into the race with an extra challenge to navigate.
21:50Bridie's dyslexia.
21:51I'm afraid about direction, knowing we're north, south, east, west.
21:55Know each other, we know about that.
21:57I'm afraid if we're on the right path, right time, all that.
22:00No, I think you'll be fine.
22:02I think about putting your trust in each other.
22:03We do that every day.
22:04The good thing about it is we do...
22:07I want to say, rely on each other.
22:08Like, I'll talk things through with you.
22:10You talk things through with me.
22:12We're best friends.
22:13Yeah, we are, aren't we?
22:16Night.
22:17Night.
22:18City.
22:19Nava.
22:20Nava.
22:21City.
22:21That one.
22:22I would say...
22:24I feel my dyslexia's a bit like the race.
22:25Yeah.
22:26Because every day is unknown for me.
22:28Like, a day at work, I can't read the schedule, so that's a foreign language.
22:32So it was quite nice for everyone to experience what I was going through every day.
22:36Yeah, that's true.
22:37And when they were like, oh, I got so frustrated, I couldn't read it, because it was in a foreign
22:40language.
22:40And I was like, that's how I feel every day, guys.
22:43I'm going to ask you.
22:43Oh, I'm going to ask you.
22:44I'm going to ask you.
22:45Is this going here?
22:47Oh, yeah.
22:47I don't know.
22:48Are we on the right one?
22:50Oh, this one, this one, yeah.
22:52Sharon had always wanted to travel, but this was the first time they had ventured this
22:57far, and in this way.
22:59Cheers.
22:59Cheers.
23:00Our strategy on the race was just being nice to people, and going up to them and just
23:05being all friendly.
23:08How do you do that?
23:09Here we put these shoes on.
23:10What?
23:11I feel like Cinderella.
23:12People are just lovely, and they kept hers upbeat, because that's what we do.
23:18Yeah.
23:18We meet and talk to people.
23:19Come on, be that little girl.
23:20Yeah.
23:21Just smile.
23:22Smile goes a long way, and it never goes out of fashion.
23:26Yeah.
23:26Well, you really want to have them.
23:31On top of a smile, prioritising work with the locals was part of their strategy.
23:37Oh, is this your family?
23:38No, Harry.
23:50You've got a whopper.
23:52We're definitely practical people.
23:53We're definitely practical people.
23:54We're definitely people that get ourselves stuck in.
23:56It's amazing.
23:59Some routes, we met some awesome people on our route, so I didn't regret any of that.
24:04And, like, they'll stay friends forever now.
24:06But after falling behind in the race, the pressure mounted when they were faced with elimination.
24:12Oh, do you know what?
24:14It's chaos, isn't it?
24:16Getting out of Hanoi, I was ready to throw the towel in.
24:19That was your rock bottom moment?
24:21That was definitely rock bottom for me.
24:23You all right?
24:24Yeah, I just felt stressed, because it's so hard.
24:26Oh, no.
24:27I couldn't read the map, couldn't help Mum out the tickets, couldn't help Mum do anything.
24:31I felt useless.
24:33I don't understand it.
24:37I think Hanoi was soul-destroying for you.
24:39Yeah, it was.
24:39It was hard work.
24:41I'm relieved that we've booked our ticket for tomorrow.
24:43Yeah.
24:44I think you just need a good night's sleep.
24:46I feel way better now.
24:47And as they arrived in last at the Cambodian checkpoint, their race came to an end.
24:56Me and Mum, definitely 100% fifth was us winning.
24:59Yeah.
25:00Just because me taking part of the race was already me winning.
25:04I just wanted to do it with my mum, and I feel like we achieved that.
25:09I think when I started the race, I just wanted to get across that you can do things differently.
25:13People just think I'm just a normal young girl.
25:16They don't see what actually goes on behind the scene.
25:18And obviously, Mum has to read, like the brochure, Mum had to read it all to me.
25:22I'm like, oh, God.
25:23Then I have to process it.
25:24And we have to, like, do it our own way.
25:26Yeah.
25:27But it doesn't matter if you're different.
25:29And that's what I wanted to get across.
25:30I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at, like, how many people you've inspired.
25:34I do think Bridie is the bravest, strongest person I know.
25:40God, oh.
25:40No, I do.
25:41I do.
25:42You know, for a young girl, 25, just to go out there and show everybody all her scars and,
25:48you know, I just think that's amazing.
25:49Bridie's biggest...
25:50I'm going to cry now.
25:52I'm Bridie's biggest fan.
25:54Everything that Bridie's had to put up with in life, she's had to struggle.
25:59And she's got this fight.
26:01She's almost an elastic band and you just kick her down and she goes bouncing back.
26:06So I wanted to show mum that she's made me be the strong person I am.
26:09So I wanted to show her that she's the person that has pushed me forward.
26:13So I wouldn't be the person I am today without her.
26:15She's made me the best I am.
26:18Love you.
26:19And can I just say as well, not to make it about me, but I'm going to do my best.
26:24Obviously, growing up without a mum, it is completely, completely inspirational to see the impact that you've had.
26:32I don't hold any grudge for what's happened in my life, but seeing relationships like yours do make me feel
26:37like I've missed out.
26:39But it is absolutely beautiful to see.
26:42She'll adopt you as well.
26:45I do feel like you should be asking us, you know, how do we feel for winning?
26:49Because I think we won.
26:52How do you feel for winning?
26:53Yeah.
26:53Yeah.
26:54Amazing.
27:02The race lasted an epic 51 days, but when it came to the final run and to each checkpoint,
27:10every second mattered.
27:14Let's go!
27:15Let's go!
27:15Let's go!
27:15Let's go!
27:15Let's go!
27:15Let's go!
27:16Woo-hoo!
27:16Crank it up, pal!
27:18We're going to race to win it.
27:19I want to beat everyone.
27:20Why would you not want to beat everyone?
27:23This is stressful.
27:24Boys, ahead!
27:25We just want to really get going now.
27:27I just want to get up my ladder on the checkpoint, and I'm going to make that happen.
27:31There's people behind us.
27:33We need to do this.
27:35Get out the way!
27:38Faster!
27:39But as they became increasingly desperate to get an edge on their competitors, their true
27:43gamesmanship was revealed.
27:45There's a bus coming out.
27:47Banlun.
27:48Banlun.
27:48Banlun.
27:48What time do we arrive?
27:50Go and see what's happening.
27:52Go on, Mum.
27:53Go and stand.
27:53Listen.
27:54I'm satisfied.
27:56What do you want to know?
27:57What did you just find out?
27:58This bus does not go to Banlun.
28:01Does it not?
28:01It goes to the border and stops.
28:04He's a liar.
28:06Oh, is he lying?
28:08You are our competitors.
28:10I can't compare to them.
28:11He's very, very, very competitive.
28:13We are too, but what goes around comes around, James.
28:18If I'm honest, it did play with my head, because it made me question the bus.
28:23So you did do what you set out to do.
28:26It did...
28:27So would you have watched us get off and then just...
28:29Happily, yes.
28:31Oh, James!
28:32What have you learned?
28:34Yeah, but like I say, it's not cheating, is it?
28:36It's just bending the truth.
28:37Tactics.
28:38In a competition, in a race, you've got to do what you've got to do to try and get the
28:43upper hand, and that's always been in my nature, to always try and win.
28:47So were you happy with Betty for dobbing you in?
28:50Oh, I wasn't, no.
28:51No!
28:53Why did you?
28:53Yeah, I've always thought that.
28:54Did you feel bad?
28:56Yeah, I felt bad.
28:57These ladies did a lot of hard work to get on that bus.
28:59We did nothing.
29:01We just followed them on, knowing they were going in the same direction.
29:04So then I felt like they'd helped us, and then we were kind of like kicking them in the
29:08teeth, and that wasn't my tactic.
29:10I think we played fairly all the way through.
29:13More or less.
29:14There is a confession that I need to...
29:15Oh, no, now you bring it up.
29:16Oh!
29:19Would have been real gamesmanship to hide their bags.
29:22To what?
29:23Hide their bags.
29:24We had a genuine conversation outside the port at Lombok about potentially hiding...
29:31Oh, yeah.
29:32...hiding Eugenia and Isabelle's bag.
29:35Hang on, let's get this clear.
29:37It was his idea.
29:39I don't care.
29:40I'm throwing you in the mud, mate.
29:41I'm off the hook here, by the way.
29:43I'm throwing him in the mud.
29:44Wow!
29:45I was looking to exhaust all possible options.
29:47And he nearly did it.
29:49I had to talk him down from it.
29:51Alfie!
29:52You're welcome.
29:55Yeah.
29:56Often the front runners, the competition between Alfie and Owen and Eugenie and Isabelle became
30:02one of the race's biggest rivalries to date.
30:05How much do you want to win?
30:06Do you know what?
30:07Is it burning?
30:08Of course it is.
30:09Yeah.
30:09And we talk as if we're winners already.
30:11Yeah.
30:14Oh.
30:17There's someone coming.
30:19Oh, my God.
30:19It's the boys.
30:22Go.
30:23Go.
30:23Outside.
30:24Outside.
30:24Come on, Mum.
30:25Come on.
30:26It became apparent very quickly that Eugenie and Isabelle knew what they were doing.
30:30They were going to be right with us all the way through it.
30:33I didn't expect it, seeing them at the start line.
30:36They absolutely rattled me.
30:37They spent eight weeks.
30:38They were in your head, rent-free.
30:40Completely rent-free.
30:41Completely rent-free.
30:44Mum, come on.
30:45Mum, they're behind us.
30:47When we bumped into them, that was the moment I realised they were in it to win it and they
30:51were very intense.
30:52At the start, seeing them was fairly reassuring, you know.
30:55It meant we were doing something right if we were with another couple that was at the
30:58front, but every time we saw them from, like, I don't know, leg three onwards and they
31:03were at the top, it was like, they're still here.
31:05Like, why can't we shake them?
31:13They didn't seem very calm.
31:15Yeah.
31:16When we used to cross paths, they were very nervous.
31:21Very...
31:21Just, yeah, just on edge.
31:23You missed a bit, Owen.
31:24Look, up there.
31:25Yeah, yeah.
31:27Go away, we'll see you in Lombok.
31:29Talk about gamesmanship.
31:31They lied to us at Jakarta.
31:32Yeah, well, they lied to you.
31:33I didn't believe it for a second.
31:35I think money's going to be a big factor.
31:36Yeah, it's quite tight.
31:38What?
31:39Yeah.
31:39Money's a problem.
31:43We are both very competitive.
31:45You don't agree.
31:46I mean, you were very good at it.
31:47I mean, the most you were ever behind is what, like an hour and a half?
31:49I think that Eugenie was very, very competitive and as a pair, they were absolutely daunting.
31:56I think you had almost an art form in terms of the way that you managed to manipulate your
32:00competitiveness because I'd struggled hiding it, but you were still so calm in your body
32:05language, even with like a determined mindset.
32:08In terms of being competitive, I'm kind of very hopeful and I was always saying,
32:14we're going to be on top, we're going to be first or possibly second.
32:18Yeah.
32:19But I was always going for the first and second always.
32:21And that was irritating.
32:24I guess you need that difference though to actually spur you on, don't you?
32:27Sometimes you need a little disagreement to just go, right, well, let's just...
32:30Yeah, we had a few of them.
32:31Yeah.
32:34Father, I ask you for your grace and favour to give us strength and wisdom
32:38along the way.
32:39When growing up, trainee clinical scientist Isabelle sometimes felt disconnected from
32:45her mum.
32:45What appealed to me about the race was it gave mum and I an opportunity to spend some time
32:51together because it's something I feel like we've been lacking over the years.
32:54Because our relationship is quite rocky, let's do this.
32:58Because we're strong.
32:59I know mum.
33:00In terms of this, it was building that deeper connection and facing those challenges together.
33:08I think we want to go to Hiroshima.
33:10Yeah.
33:10We'll hopefully have job opportunities available.
33:13What's quite good is we can actually get there quite easily.
33:16We then need to work out what the closest port to us would be.
33:18And then once we get to Korea, we're going to end up at...
33:21Isabelle.
33:22Yeah, sorry.
33:23Come on.
33:23Yes, yes, yes.
33:24Even before we went on the race, I'd already thought, OK, well, Isabelle's going to be
33:29the planner and I'm going to be the people person.
33:31I'm going to enjoy myself.
33:31Yeah.
33:32And have a holiday.
33:32Yeah.
33:33It felt like that.
33:36It was soon clear that a strength was born from their differences as they became front-runners
33:41in the race.
33:42Do we quickly scope out night buses before we head?
33:44Oh, come on, Isabelle.
33:46It's now 25 to 11.
33:48I think priority's getting out, so we've got to get as much information as possible.
33:52Isabelle will overthink everything.
33:54And I suppose, in a way, for the race, it actually worked for us.
33:59Because she was thinking of absolutely everything.
34:04Ah!
34:05I see!
34:05I told you!
34:06OK.
34:07Oh, my gosh!
34:10Oh, my gosh, I'm getting all emotional.
34:12But in their relationship, they struggled to find the same success.
34:16What you need to get into your head, politely speaking, we need money.
34:23Just looking at me is not helpful, Mum. Can you talk?
34:25I thought you were telepathy.
34:27No, it's not telepathy.
34:28I'm not standing on that.
34:30Down here.
34:31Mum, come on.
34:32I'm going to carry on walking this way.
34:35Mum, you're ignoring what I'm saying.
34:40What's wrong?
34:41I just find this whole thing really difficult.
34:45I learned that I'm not very patient.
34:48I suspected that I wasn't very patient, particularly with Mum.
34:51And I learned that I'm really impatient and I need sleep.
34:54I also learned that, like, I know I overthink, but it's to a point where I think it really was
34:58impacting my life a lot more than I thought it was.
35:00I wasn't in the moment as much as I could have been.
35:03You come across as being irritated by me as well.
35:07But a lot of the time you don't actually express what you're thinking.
35:11I always have to feel like I need to read your expressions.
35:14But you read them wrong.
35:16I think, growing up, I spent a lot of time trying to act a bit more tough around you.
35:20Just because you had that toughness, it's something I've had to kind of, I guess, almost fake around you.
35:26And that's something I've always battled with.
35:28It's things that we can improve.
35:29Yeah.
35:30Right?
35:30In terms of how we communicate with each other, understanding each other's feelings.
35:35And I'm hearing that.
35:37All right?
35:38OK.
35:39I feel like the race has highlighted that I guess I can be myself a bit more.
35:44It's OK to not be, I guess, as strong as you come across.
35:48And my weakness is also, I guess, my positives as well.
35:52Yeah.
35:55He's lighting out the whole...
35:56Who wrote, where, when, how much?
35:57Who wrote, where, when, how much?
35:59Yeah, yeah.
35:59I've always kind of liked languages because it's patterned.
36:02I quite like little patterns.
36:03Doc or Desuka?
36:04Don or Desuka?
36:05Don or Desuka?
36:06I'm actually learning quite a bit about my daughter.
36:09She's just like a dog with a bow and getting information.
36:13We're going to have a Facebook at this rate.
36:16Personal translator.
36:18I thought I knew your strengths, but I was just amazed at the way that you just
36:23was able to embrace every country that we went through.
36:28Each skill that I thought you had, it's even more so than that.
36:32I was just so amazed and just so proud of her.
36:35Yeah?
36:35You two kept inspiring us.
36:37We're like, come on, go.
36:39Just love you.
36:40I'm proud of you.
36:41Aw.
36:43Aw.
36:45Oh, jeez, that hurts.
36:48Aw.

37:06I think with the race, it demonstrated that there are positives to us together
37:11and there's stuff I could learn from you and I have learnt from you and I feel like it's
37:16something I can now take forward and it really has, I guess, marked, like a turning point.
37:22Come on, mum!
37:24I kind of realized that Isabel's language of love is time now I get to get it so I'll give
37:32you the
37:32time I'm so grateful that we had the experience together which is absolutely unique and we know
37:40that even when we talk to other people about it we didn't talk to talk to your brothers about it
37:46they just won't get it but we'll get it because it's our it's our lifelong memory
37:55throughout the race was a chance to discover the true taste of Asia from world-renowned sushi
38:02not ladylike not lady to colorful vibrant street food markets holy crap but you need to go out
38:11you pump it down a bit I'm pushing it out there already I'm telling you spicy curries
38:19oh you're kidding me oh and some more unusual delicacies what's that a hand oh is that a
38:27willy hand hand oh my god the pig's head oh god but being budget conscious meant the teams often
38:40chose to forgo these culinary delights we didn't eat any of it did we yeah well we we couldn't
38:47control how much buses were how much coaches were trains were yeah but the one thing we could control
38:52was how much we spent on food and we spent we didn't buy a drink for three weeks yeah we
38:57just we
38:57just had lift off you know just our water well I've made some cheese and jam sandwiches and yeah
39:07hmm we basically survived off 7-elevens didn't we we were in there every day Alfie they have cheese
39:14singles over here okay normally at home I ate four or five meals a day going to eat in like
39:20a few
39:20crackers a day was poor it affected me more than you just thinking back to Japan we'd happily spend
39:26like even like eight quid on food and now we're literally just eating crackers in Cambodia how much
39:33of a lifesaver was it when you got to a job or a homestay are you hungry I was so
39:41sick of rice
39:41that was it I kept saying I'm all riced out I'm sorry I'm just rice and noodles I think I'd
39:50be scared
39:50to eat most of it that's for sure I don't want to have this shit for the next two weeks
39:55I felt like
39:57I was watching mum all the time you were watching mum all the time because it was like you know
40:02every
40:02morsel do you really need that do you that extra cracker would have done something in the future so
40:08it was like trying to think ahead and everything counted don't have two did you take two yeah why
40:14can't I have two no because this is rations mum are you hungry this isn't yes this is my lunch
40:29it was week six when you brought in a snack ban but like it came down to at the end
40:33like that last
40:34February I wanted a pack of cookies okay I was hungry if we'd have bought those cookies we wouldn't
40:40have made it yeah on the break to the end yeah crossing the line at the end we had just
40:45over a
40:45pound wow mind you how amazing you've literally that's great yeah see that's the thing you can
40:55either go yeah yeah it's great but you're looking it wouldn't have taken much and you wouldn't have
40:59wanted to finish with loads of money because then you'd well we had over a hundred pound and we wish
41:04we'd spent more on different things so this is the this is the caravan before the race retirees
41:14Stephen and Viv were looking to shake things up with one last big adventure when we saw the race
41:20on TV we both sat there saying yeah I could do that yeah I could do that and then we
41:24looked at each
41:25other and there was sort of a a glint in each of our eyes really it's dramatically different from the
41:31caravanning and something we've never ever done before so far away from the comfort holidays we
41:36normally have with the all-inclusive crews or whatever it is we're on them so it's can we cope can
41:42we
41:42survive can we live with each other for goodness sake that long you know I don't know we have our
41:47own space we have our own bathrooms let's be honest so I'm not sure that shouldn't go in I'm sorry
41:54the pair quickly embraced life on the road can we come with you okay oh thank you thank you
42:02ah that is brilliant throwing themselves in with both feet whoa you thought yours was big Stephen
42:27can we can be a little bit of an acquired taste please can we go to the queue can we
42:39can we cut
42:40in the tennis club they find him quite loud not very tactful unintentionally offensive don't know if
42:48they'll let you in Stephen you know rush we're in a rush come on we were frustrated and I think
42:52sometimes and you may may have come across as a little bit rude I think you hinted at this before
42:59because your frustration is because you need an answer you need an answer now because it's about
43:02to go you can't waste time I don't want to be your friend just tell me the answer yeah yeah
43:06sometimes
43:07it's a bit aggressive we want to go to Lampang we just need to get there as quick as possible
43:12today
43:14oh flipping it says here anywhere it says bus anywhere go anywhere bus go anywhere well I like
43:23things organized I'm quite anal about it I like to have a calendar up to date I know exactly what's
43:27going on exactly when if it's not on the calendar it doesn't happen so you know very structured
43:32very timed I need to bang that table any harder I'm getting I'm getting whiplash over here so the
43:39learning curve for me I think was to learn to cope with no structure learning to go with the flow
43:46not
43:46knowing what we're yeah not knowing what we're gonna be eating doing seeing sleeping and actually
43:51yeah it took me while to get over that she said 140 oh please 100,000 100,000 but it
44:01was mighty Viv that
44:03held the team together no it's okay thanks yeah we're not angry and as they traversed across each
44:10country she reaped the rewards of the race experience I think on the race I put a few
44:22demons to rest the dolphins was like the exorcism of the stroke if you like yes the last time that
44:29I'd seen dolphins was two days before stroke I remember I actually felt that I'd sort of conquered
44:40some of my phobias some of my fears and my insecurities and that I did actually feel that
44:47I'd grown personally the two things that each of us wanted out to the race you wanted me to have
44:54an
44:54adventure and I wanted you to see how strong you are so far create both often upon an adventure
45:03and you're just brilliant thank you thank you I think the experience of the race has motivated us
45:17to think about what we are and who we are oh well done my lovely oh it's been a epic
45:24journey oh god yeah
45:26I think the race has shifted our priorities and we actually thought that this would be a great
45:30opportunity to have a final adventure but in actual fact it seems to have whetted our appetite for more
45:36adventures to come yes thank you for coming with me my darling couldn't have done it with anyone else
45:44Stephen is actually planning a trip for us to go to Canada yeah and we're not going to know where
45:51we're going we're just going to have a motorhome yeah and just travel around Canada there's a
45:56confidence that if it goes wrong it doesn't matter yeah yeah but we'll have the money to do what we
46:08want to know the lengthy journey of the race through seven countries gave the teams the opportunity to
46:15connect with the local people working together staying in their homes and sharing in surprising
46:24similarities we play tennis play tennis play tennis like me and my mother really yes oh this is you
46:34yes no wow she's expert I can tell the way she's holding the racket the whole thing was fabulous but
46:42it's the people that I think I remember most of all we did a lot of working with families and
46:47it was
46:47that social connection it's so different as well yeah yeah unable to show all their meaningful
46:53encounters the teams reflect upon their most memorable unseen moments I'm James nice to meet you
47:01one of the standouts was the first homestay you know I really took sort of working with them getting
47:05to know them but he didn't speak in English it was sort of the facial expressions that I really
47:09went off with him he's always smiling hand gestures like chopping up wood he would show me how to do
47:15it and
47:15then give me a nice clap if I did well or a thumbs up or something and the people made
47:20it so good
47:21even though that language barrier was really tough high fives are universal and you know like running
47:30around and laughing yeah so spicy that spicy oh god that really was one of the highlights of the trip
47:40because we felt so so part of a community there these people don't have much if anything and
47:48they're willing to give us what they do have in exchange for virtually nothing just got to be so
47:52grateful for the opportunities that these people are giving us bye bye give me high fives good boy you see
47:58love and community and unity and sometimes that's what we've lost yeah we've lost that community they
48:06were all very much reliant on family and friends weren't they and that gives that community it just
48:11shows what's important to people do you know I mean are things that important you strip possessions away
48:16yeah okay this is for you I think everybody's always seeking to have more I think we've all become
48:28quite materialistic and it's become about things and achieving yeah so in terms of my growth I've come to
48:42the realization things aren't the be all and end all it's about people cheese cheese one of my wow moments
48:52was when we were at the Busan port and we were just at the point of despair I just spotted
48:58this lady just
48:59watching we don't have much money we don't have a phone we're in a race taking part in a race
49:03to
49:04Sokcho between here and there we need to find accommodation and transport we have a spare bin
49:11actually yes if you want to come stay with us if you want we're in a family room are you
49:16kidding
49:16me and it's massive do you snort we just got new energy from somebody giving us it's lovely time to
49:27us it just gave us like we thought we can't give up you know yeah so when these people help
49:35you why
49:37what are they getting out of it I know you know they just want they just want to help you
49:40yeah we
49:41always assumed it was sort of a bit of a fix yes previously previously but in actual fact when it
49:46happens to you you're just like oh just can't leave you know yeah yeah anyway you can show us on
49:51a map
49:51or anything where we are roughly I've always believed in that the power of love and the power of people
49:57and
49:57throughout the whole race we were just shown how you walk into ten people nine of them will welcome
50:04you in and that's that's the beautiful reality of of life and it's a part of life that we don't
50:10get
50:10to experience enough just because of our culture of where we are winners Alfie and Owen started the
50:19race as two young friends hungry to get out and explore the world well you're the one that always
50:28says we're best friends so that's not hang on it is I called you friend once and you were like
50:33just
50:34friends no and then I did the same thing and then you got equally like don't don't don't pretend this
50:40is
50:40a one-way thing but winning was firmly in Alfie's sights from the starting gun now we have to get
50:48to
50:48Tokyo as soon as possible that's set in stone hang on we're definitely going to want to stop at some
50:52point to see some culture we don't want to miss out what Japan's all about we just need to keep
50:57moving I think we pegged you as as very competitive and quite driven right from the very start yeah I
51:05didn't hide it very well no I don't need to I knew come into the race that it was it
51:11was win or bust for
51:12me it was very much my opinion of like I can go to all these places later down the line
51:15but I can't
51:16win this race more than once and it absolutely destroyed me for like eight weeks straight even
51:22when we were 24 hours up in my head I was still like we could have done that a little
51:25bit faster
51:26but you wanted to do anything possible to win everything you could like to be first at every
51:30checkpoint would have obviously been ideal wouldn't it yeah I know you were so cross to come in last
51:34at my Sariang you were absolutely fuming I came down to breakfast the next day and I was like
51:41yeah yeah you were spitting absolutely spitting oh let's see what this was worth then oh wow
51:47we're 11 hours behind first I'm frustrated that this leg was so poor thank you you know we've gone
51:54from here at zero in the space of five or six days I wasn't happy with the way I conducted
51:59myself at
51:59times we're actually covered I feel sick there's a massive massive pressure in the hard moments I
52:05was really really hard on myself I was really really hard on us and I was really really hard on
52:09the whole
52:09process but I had an objective and I acted in the way that I thought I thought at the time
52:16was going to
52:17best meet that objective between the pair of everyone you had what a more competitive person didn't
52:22you and someone who wanted to sort of see and explore so it was kind of finding that balance that
52:27it was kind of the hardest thing wasn't it he balanced it honestly if it wasn't for him yeah
52:30we would not we would not have seen anything for Owen stepping away from the race to enjoy experiences
52:38was key I think living in the moment is definitely you know a kind of a subconscious coping mechanism
52:45for me I just need to enjoy where I am at the time what I'm doing and who I'm with
52:49and not focus on
52:50the future so much because I used to do that all the time and it would just drive me up
52:53you know
52:54it tried me up the water and I really wanted to adopt that that principle along the race and even
52:59though that definitely annoyed Alfie you know I'm glad glad we did oh wow that looks pretty cool
53:06navigating the race in this way demonstrated to Owen just how far he'd come on his own personal
53:12journey when I was younger I just didn't like who I was you know I was just worried about everything
53:18and the main kind of support I had was my parents you know they're always there always worrying for me
53:23and that made me feel even worse sometimes because I knew they were there but I hate seeing my parents
53:37when I first met Owen he definitely struggled there was definitely a guy there that was very much
53:42trapped in his shell and you know over the past couple of years it's been such a privilege to like
53:48watch him come out of it and like develop as a man and things like that and I think the
53:53race just
53:54kind of confirmed sort of how proud I am of him going into this race you know I set some
54:02clear goals in
54:02my head of what I wanted to achieve mainly just you know get into the end you know not cracking
54:07under
54:07pressure just really proving to myself that you know I can do something I can part with a you know
54:12a mentally and physically challenging task you know because if I did this two three four years ago there
54:19was not a chance I would have been able to do it so knowing that I can do that you
54:23know I've got that
54:24confidence you know it really gives me a boost we knew from the get-go that you were the ones
54:34that we had
54:35to have eyes on you were the ones that we need to kind of check out but at the same
54:39time each
54:40checkpoint we got to know the two of you to the point where we said if we're gonna lose to
54:46anyone
54:47we were quite happy to lose to you guys yeah quite deserving yeah at the end is that but the
54:54fact is it
54:55was you too I was so pleased to hear that you'd won and I think of all the couples we
55:00felt you were
55:00really deserving winners and your relationship is just so strong you know obviously you've been
55:06through a lot together and you just know each other inside and out and that was really easy to see
55:13for Alfie winning wasn't just a chance to celebrate their friendship but a deep-rooted desire that
55:19promised self-realization I think because my mum died so young I was wrapped up in cotton wool my
55:26family felt they had a duty to her to protect me to make sure that everything's gonna be okay there
55:32was never any pressure to succeed and I think that's why I've got this sort of attitude of I
55:39really want to succeed because I had something to prove to myself then that actually the legacy that
55:44I wanted to leave behind for her wasn't just protecting myself and being safe and staying within
55:49this ceiling that I'd been given it was a lot more than that it was about reaching for the stars
55:54and
55:54even if I don't get there if I touch the sky then that's something different
56:02I want to maximize my time that I've got I want to be the absolute best I can I want
56:08to meet as
56:08many people I want to go to as many countries I've just got a constant drive for what's next
56:13I suppose what are you actually even gonna spend the money on I've set a chunk aside might need to
56:21take my parents away to do something for them you know treat my brothers as well I want to go
56:25back
56:25to Asia at the end of this year and just do all the bits that we didn't get to do
56:29you know I just
56:29want to go into a 7-eleven and gorge on everything instead of picking up a sad little cheese and
56:35ham
56:36toastie I've never like solo traveled before and I just really want to give it a go and see where
56:41it
56:41takes me what's what's your plan you've probably blown through half of it though your excursions
56:46recently have you been okay well I've been to Sweden Norway Mexico Poland Malta New Zealand
56:54Australia since the race do you think you've kind of it's kind of changed your mindset in terms of
57:11how you travel much better outlook on how to do things you know you don't have to take a plane
57:17you
57:17don't even have to have your phone I've spoken to so many more people also just keeps you grounded I
57:22think yeah it makes you appreciate what you have as well yeah yeah it's just picking up on people's
57:27cultures learning the local customs and that's something that race taught me this is what I was
57:33thinking of you know the high-rise buildings the massive screens this is amazing you're amazing
57:39you're powerful all of you strong yeah she knows yeah this is a race and a half oh it's one
57:55of those
57:55wonders of nature oh my god this is the best thing I've ever seen okay I'm trotting
58:20that was the best moment of my life no no shit oh
58:47you
