00:05Oh, my God.
00:07Flash flood or what? Oh, my days.
00:10I've already been for a swim today, I don't need another.
00:19At the third checkpoint in the race across South-East Asia...
00:27It's the end of the Cambodian national holiday, Shum Ben, Ancestors Day.
00:34This offering is for my family and for my father,
00:39who I lost a few years ago.
00:41A chance for teams to receive a blessing
00:44and pay their respects to lost loved ones.
00:48I think he'd be very proud of me and of his granddaughter as well.
00:52The challenges have been there, but for me,
00:56the major part of this is spending time with Isabel.
01:01It is our journey together.
01:04We've got us dedicated to a whole group, I think,
01:06just to keep safe and healthy throughout our whole journey.
01:10We're just thankful, actually, and proud of ourselves for staying in.
01:13It was quite nice to have a bit of a good-luck offering, I think.
01:16We could all probably use it.
01:17Take all the help we can get, won't we?
01:19I'd like to do it to my nan, who passed away last year.
01:23And then I'd like to bless my mum, who passed away 15 years ago.
01:29Sato. Sato. Sato. Sato.
01:32Yes, very good.
01:35Everything that I do, I strive with her in mind.
01:38She would want me to enjoy every minute.
01:40I just hope that she's given us some good karma going forward in the race.
01:49Sato. Sato. Sato. Sato.
01:57After the elimination of Bridie and Sharon in the last leg,
02:01four teams now remain.
02:04New leaders Alfie and Owen...
02:07so this is for you thank you thank you are the first team to learn the location of the fourth
02:13checkpoint may sariang my sariang not a clue no not as good as we need to find this place
02:27excuse me guys we're in a race and we need to go to this location is there any way you
02:32can help us
02:32yeah oh my god is that burma oh it's next to burma thailand i think it is thailand okay thailand
02:41one of the most visited countries in the world but on this leg the teams will be heading to one
02:47of its most unexplored regions 1400 kilometers away in the shan highlands that straddle the thai
02:58myanmar border lies the fourth checkpoint the quiet mountain town of may sariang
03:09i mean i don't know about you but thailand's always been on my bucket list a lot of people
03:13i know have been to thailand have just absolutely raved about it so i'm so excited to see what
03:16has to offer especially animals animals so much biodiversity and i think we're going to be going
03:22into like an untapped paradise yeah i hope so first before leaving cambodia teams must circumnavigate
03:29the largest body of fresh water in southeast asia tonli sap lake heading to the lake's west offers
03:38fast roads to the border and into central thailand with ancient settlements on the journey northwards
03:46engulfed by mountains and jungle to the east lies siam reap gateway to the tourist hot spot of anchor
03:57watt from there it's a journey back in time through thailand's rural eastern provinces rarely traveled by
04:04backpackers so let's just get a plan then i'd rather do more thailand just because i haven't been like
04:11thailand is so much more appealing to me so you're quite happy to kind of hit thailand hit thailand and
04:16have
04:16more more more time there i'm with that like let's see some elephants and some tigers and stuff
04:22like that so i think we're in agreement central over eastern you drive us uh night market to maximize
04:30their time in thailand the boys plan to head straight to the border at poi pet and from there strike
04:37out
04:37into the heart of the country in search of its wildlife first time it's an opportunity for me to take
04:44owen's approach of properly stepping back and looking around there's still a burning desire to win
04:49but this really is an opportunity to win in other ways look for non-pain to point that perfect
04:58we need a bus to point that today nine o'clock nine p.m
05:05unbelievable we'll be in thailand tomorrow yeah all right it'll be great everything's falling into
05:09place alfie's mood has changed slightly you know before he was very race race race but i feel like
05:15now we're in a good position elimination is over and we've come first for the first time he's kind
05:20of a bit more inclined to just enjoy it when it's like that you know it makes me happier and
05:24it makes
05:24him happier so it makes a big difference i just want to get ahead of the voyage because we want
05:31to
05:32come in first place this time setting off an hour and a half after owen and alfie oh look there's
05:37a
05:37boat over there this is a lot cheaper than the tuk-tuk cheaper than a tuk-tuk former leaders isabel
05:43and
05:44eugenie we need to work on our communication yeah but we're going to try and do it differently this time
05:50rather than traveling through we want to stop a lot more and just enjoy what's around us we need
05:56to be able to connect and be more open with one another going forward yeah hoping to make the most
06:02of the remaining time in cambodia eugenie and isabel plan to make an early stop on the banks of the
06:20ton
06:35market nick market
06:40how about you that well i'll get whatever you get
06:45thank you thank you mate we lost the map and we're buying ice cream every day we're still
06:49first unbelievable oh is this our bus oh it's nice oh i think we're in luck
06:59what which one do we get on just either i think we share one mate we share one oh god
07:09well this is going to be hell
07:11i was feeling pretty happy when the bus pulled up i was like okay great the bed's pretty big
07:17then we realize we've got a share
07:23look at your feet there don't okay this is definitely the worst bus we've been on so far
07:29it's a bit cramped but we're making significant progress oh yay i'm quite happy to make the sacrifice
07:38it smells of feet well it's probably just my feet
07:43did you just hit your head no i hit my old way
07:48do you know where this is my sarang
07:54nine hours behind the race leaders let's mark it on the map quickly we're in a race thank you very
08:00much take care thank you we're going thailand baby with the smallest budget of the remaining teams
08:09on the last few legs every penny will count for betty and james
08:14splash the cash on a premium night bus again yeah exactly but yeah first things first a bus station
08:20according to the map bat and bang sort of close to the board we think isn't it so heading to
08:25bat and bang
08:27following in the footsteps of the teams ahead the siblings are also taking the road towards central
08:32thailand aiming to reach the city of bat and bang tonight come on thailand's gonna be good for us
08:39yeah we're not there yet station two please two dollars two dollars thank you very much
08:46okay oh my god what what oh no wait wait wait wait wait wait wait he's put his money belt
08:57off
08:57where is it you put it on the ground i don't have my arm sorry
09:05so when we were looking through the map james took his money belt off well it had our only
09:11cambodian money in it he also has hold of his own passport oh my god thank you so much cheers
09:21guys
09:22okay let's get back i think he's got it i think he's got it saved my blushes might need some
09:29new boxes
09:33oh
09:44shit stupid
09:47if you lose his passport we're out because can't go to thailand
09:55you okay is it empty sorry what's happened sorry what's happening sorry i don't know what's
10:02happened the money's gone there's only my passport in here there was 100 000 cambodian and that was
10:08the last cambodian money we have honestly i was shitting about your passport so oh sorry very stupid
10:19if anything was to go wrong we are the family that kind of bury things don't get upset or emotional
10:26with each other we do just kind of get up and get on with it right am i giving you
10:31this
10:32if you want it yeah i still trust you but particularly james and i with each other we are closed
10:40books
10:46you okay yeah what's up because of the money yeah
10:59it's about the first time i've actually feel emotional it was just stupid error
11:05i'm really thankful for betty yeah she's done really well for me but it was a bit
11:10shit to be honest any buses going tonight this is going to samrea is there spaces on this bus
11:18yeah we have space are you sure you want to go there otherwise you have to pay for accommodation
11:23and then get the bus okay yeah yeah yeah two please yeah it's gonna be okay
11:30after they're near miss the siblings change plans unlike the other teams they are now heading east of
11:38tonley sap to cambodia's cultural capital siam reap we're on the moon it's just like the worst possible
11:46start not the end of the world we just go and make the most of scenery
12:07the last team to leave phnom penh the trousers are falling down viv and steven are playing catch up if
12:14we
12:14can make decisions faster pick our route and stick to it then you know we could soon be up with
12:19the
12:19winners a good connection can be the making or breaking of this next leg this is a bus station
12:30bus station this is the bus station yeah it's a minibus station oh minibus oh hello i thought
12:38this was this was selling drinks a little table on the side of the road oh we want to go
12:43to
12:43toy pet toy pet or battenbank keep thinking battenberg you know yeah which is fastest we're in a race
12:51looking to close the gap viv and steven are on the road for the next five hours
12:56to get as close as possible to the thai border
13:01so follow her if you hit us hit her first we're on the tiles
13:11300 kilometers north
13:19over two million people flock to the city of siam reap every year in order to visit anchor watt
13:29spread across 400 acres it's the world's largest religious monument
13:36but after making a last-minute decision to head this way
13:41this is the famous pub street looks like an actual strip betty and james have their eyes
13:48on more earthly pleasures this is the bear after you think everything's going to go horribly wrong
13:54oh my god have i lost my money have i lost my passport
13:59bless you so i just treat ourselves a little bit haven't we oh baby we need to sort of find
14:05out
14:05where we're going to head tomorrow the osma board is actually pretty close to here okay
14:11after the setback in phnom penh
14:14they are heading towards thailand's rural isan region
14:17the least visited part of the country last night it was very chaotic we've already changed our plan like
14:26a few hours in we've kind of taken a risk going quite far out off the tourist trail
14:33but that's okay like i genuinely think that this will work out for the better
14:40150 kilometers northwest of siam reap i got feeling me and you're going to fall in love with thailand
14:47this might be the longest life we have owen and alfie are the first team to enter the fifth country
14:52of
14:52the race the most popular destination in southeast asia thailand
15:01a heady blend of vibrant buddhist culture alongside pristine and stunning natural beauty
15:09the land of smiles boasts over 40 000 temples
15:14and a tenth of the world's animal species
15:20so we're here in thailand i hear a parrot there's three of them up there four they're quite cool
15:27we have heard about an incredible opportunity tomorrow to go to a wildlife park
15:32apparently it's very close to pak chong so that's why we really want to get there
15:35kow yai
15:39we've just got no idea where it is
15:42ticket
15:43for bus
15:44uh pak chong
15:46pak chong
15:48yeah yeah
15:59not really i don't know what you're saying mate sorry
16:02follow yeah thank you thank you apparently this man's taken us to where the bus picks us up or
16:09something i'm not really sure what's going on it comes here yeah at six o'clock thank you so much
16:16thank you okay right i don't know what's going on i have a weird amount of confidence in this when
16:23i feel like i feel like i shouldn't be confident in it but i am
16:30wow this is a huge community oh this is cool
16:35oh a school look is that a school yeah at the western shore of the tonle sap oh this is
16:43going to be
16:44wicked health center i'm just getting it now it's a village on the water yeah
17:00campong luong is one of 170 floating villages sustained by the lake
17:06we've got a bit of everything it's rich fishing grounds among the most productive in the world
17:12oh my gosh that is deep for decades the villages were closed communities
17:18but now a few locals welcome visitors hello and this evening eugenie and isabel are guests of peng
17:26sok hon and her family
17:32by doing a home stay i'm hoping we'll have the time to talk a bit more
17:39and just enjoying what's around us
17:47isabel sometimes says to me that mum you don't know me as an adult so this is a time for
17:53me to get
17:53to know that isabel that she wants me to have no he's laughing even more i give up i will
18:01not be laughed at
18:02oh my god
18:03oh my god
18:04siamese mud carp a small freshwater fish is caught to make a spicy fermented paste called prahook
18:11the basis for many cambodian dishes oh do i hate cleaning fish
18:17still prepared in the traditional way this looks delicious it's like a grin on your face it's ridiculous
18:25oh this smells amazing oh it's peanut
18:32what i see is community and family which in some ways we've lost in england
18:43and then you see this yeah it's amazing thank you thank you oh spicy
18:58what's the hell
19:03do you think it's the valley of dinner every night
19:06yeah i feel like it would be quite nice to
19:09eat together a bit more often when they were younger we all used to sit around the table and eat
19:16you've got to take into consideration that people are doing
19:20their own things now i know but it just sounds like you're coming out with excuses though
19:26everybody's doing their own thing okay okay tried did try did you though
19:35no i didn't try
19:38oh look the kids they're all ready for bed
19:42i think it's typical even when things are going great there's a negative spin that she'll add to it
19:51and uh i just have to ignore it all right i'm done
19:59140 kilometers northeast
20:08steven and viv have reached battenbang
20:11what's all the engraving about what's that the history of the buddha
20:16i always thought buddha was a fat guy you know tuk tuk driver judd has brought them to the outskirts
20:23of the city to show them the phenom sampo caves
20:30oh wow look
20:39well i never every evening for around 20 minutes six million bats disperse from the cave
20:54to feed on insects and the surrounding rice paddies
21:01still pouring out yeah they are it's one of those wonders of nature you can see them swarming around
21:25and the skeletons are still there yeah they view your whole family the whole family yeah
21:35they kill children as well yeah wow that's scary isn't it yeah
21:43less than 50 years ago the genocide of its own people by the ruling khmer rouge decimated an entire
21:50generation of cambodians an event that still reverberates today as almost a third of the
21:57nation's population is aged 14 years or under my grandfather killed by the khmer he was killed by
22:05oh my gosh good grief
22:13it's just abhorrent it really is and he made it personal the awe of nature on one side and the
22:21dismal history of humanity on the other it's horrifying i just can't get my head around why
22:31for one of every bat that we saw a person died is it's terrifying really
22:40thank you thank you thank you so so touched yeah right so thailand we need to get going really
22:47and head north gotta chase distance yeah
22:54i haven't seen a single bus less than four kilometers into thailand is this one pulling over
23:04no hoping to reach kawiyai park by the morning owen and alfie are still waiting for a bus to pack
23:10chong
23:12i'm losing hope i mean i was confident no i'm not mine don't even exist
23:20i see a bus at the bus
23:35that's your bread and butter yeah i feel like i have quite a good sense of direction it just makes
23:39sense in my head the bus goes to pack chong it's official it does does it i couldn't even tell
23:47you
23:47which way north is i know it's i know it's up there's actually two kind of north
23:52oh here we go here we go but i'll leave that for another time yeah
23:59he's saying to change bus at some point we need to find out hello how do we get to pack
24:06chong
24:11so uh where do we stop stop uh
24:21so we get off when when this bus finishes yeah do you know how long that is no you can
24:25ask
24:28there's actually zero chance we're getting to patch on tonight but ultimately it was the only bus
24:32that we knew of that was leaving oh this is painful oh no oh no he's gone for second gear
24:41and it hasn't
24:42what what mate just staying fast please
24:58what is that
25:06what's going to get to play back the border
25:06oh my gosh it needs to go
25:13she just put it up there on the wall
25:16i want to aim to get to play back the border
25:22what have i done wrong now does it say you've done anything wrong i'm listening
25:25it's fine when we're talking about having dinner together i think she took offense to that and just
25:32almost saw me as blaming her but it wasn't a blame game or anything we just don't put enough
25:37effort anymore in as a family thank you welcome bye i don't think you understand how you're being this
25:45morning i'm not going to say anything anymore okay
25:47i don't know where we are uh do you speak english
25:56yes um where are we uh a cd of no corner to see man
26:04it doesn't ring a bell
26:07nearby here we just went in the complete wrong direction tana's massive it is pretty big when
26:13you get moving for god's sake it's probably gonna be about three hours on a bus so it's not ideal
26:20it's frustrating we just want to get there see the wildlife today after realizing the shot north of
26:26pak chong last night owen and alfie get back on track by circling around to reach their intended goal
26:36where's the visitor center 14 kilometers from here 14 kilometers yeah 14 kilometers a long bloody way
26:47massive yeah no i did not expect this no i mean it is a national park it's not like a
26:52zoo is it
26:52you never know you might get like attacked by an elephant this is the sort of thailand i was kind
26:57of picturing oh yeah like rural countryside this would be worth it
27:09over 2 000 square kilometers of untouched jungle grasslands rivers and mountains
27:17kawiyai park is a protected haven for a menagerie of southeast asian wildlife
27:25today we've definitely taken a step away from the racing aspect of this trip and definitely gone
27:30more towards the experience side of it we've booked onto a sort of mini safari when it gets dark tonight
27:35so that'd be really cool no
27:39alfie's been really enthusiastic about being here camping and not worrying too much about the race
27:44although i assume that won't last too long
27:48did it just snap it did it's just nice to be able to stop be excited about the fact that
27:54we're in
27:54thailand it's one of my favorite countries on earth just to be here is incredible
28:04where are we the only team to cross into thailand to the east
28:11well we don't know huh don't know really do we betty and james are leaving the tourist trail behind
28:17for good
28:20oh my god look at that light
28:23hey these flies yeah there's so many of them we're gonna get bitten to death here
28:27well welcome to thailand eh
28:30literally no man guand oh being absolutely bitten
28:36oh it's that thing there
28:39this doesn't look cheap no it doesn't
28:42i think we should probably do a bit of cash
28:47count it's been a while
28:50i don't think either of us a particular money
28:53savvy smart yeah i'm not sure what this is
28:57i feel like since i've got a house i've had to be
29:04i've definitely become better with my money i would say 500 and what 70. yeah you can definitely have
29:10the money responsibility if it makes you feel powerful
29:15wait i spent what got about 938 quid
29:20with more than half of the race still to run the siblings have barely a third of their budget
29:26remaining it's not very much they were halfway not even halfway we've spent a lot of money
29:35i think if there wasn't the opportunity to work on the legs i would be screwed
29:39we don't have mum and dad now to just be like can you just send me over an extra tenner
29:43and i think to be honest it's like when we kind of know it's the unbeaten path
29:48and we still decide to take it is that a bigger risk yes but i'm hoping people are gonna help
29:54us and want to help us
30:00it's just kind of seeing stuff that you're going to see normally be nice
30:04i just want to see anything really an elephant would be pretty cool
30:06with many of the animals in kalyai park nocturnal oh
30:10shit look at the size of them the best way to see them is a night safari
30:19deer we paid 600 baht to look at us to get a really spiky hedgehog in five day
30:25we're only like halfway through like you can't expect to see elephants and tigers all the way
30:29around so oh what have we got
30:37fox another british garden animal i'm not hopeful about seeing an elephant
30:52it's a baby one as well there's three bro if he doesn't stop now
30:58well stop stop the vehicle what oh he's pulling over fair enough
31:09i'm supposed to know how small they are
31:12did you expect them to be bigger they might not be fully growing
31:15oh my god i thought i thought it'd be i thought it'd be way bigger
31:3220 40. hurry up steven they said lampong quick yes i'm coming i'm coming i'm coming
31:37i'm coming i'm coming she's keen this morning and she's on steroids for some reason
31:42having crossed the border yesterday come on they're calling the bus i can't rush this bit
31:49viv and steven are looking to push further into thailand 620 kilometers north
31:55to the city of lampang where they plan to pick up some work quick quick yeah
32:05like a bloody penguin waddling we want to go to lampang for two please yes two old people old people
32:12old people discount no perfect try what time does it get to lampang 10 hours break
32:2310 hours oh my goodness god the distances are just so fast aren't they the negative is that we're
32:32not going to get there in time to do some work today oh what better way to spend a birthday
32:38than
32:39sitting on the bus for 10 hours exactly with your loved one might i just add that in there
32:45just the bonus that i'm with you i'm going to be a senior citizen 66 halfway through the race
32:50oh i'll get a better view now i can see out the window when i was younger senior citizens to
32:58me
32:58they looked old and they didn't usually live long after retirement age two kiddies in a play park
33:06i mean yeah i i'm old but i don't feel old we're there yeah yeah we're there yeah
33:12i mean there's people at the tennis club playing at 82 years of age so i've got a long way
33:17to go yet
33:21i've lost it it's a bit battered it's not from me we're all thinking of you and rooting for you
33:27happy birthday so isn't that lovely there is life after your pension and it's the biggest adventure
33:35ever i'm actually looking forward to the job you know well it says it's romantic yeah but one person's
33:41romance is not another's i think it's 200 meters down oh my days okay unable to tear himself away from
33:52kauyai park just yet oh wow that looks pretty cool owen has tracked down the house suwat falls a 25
34:05meter
34:05high curtain of water water is definitely one of my favorite parts of nature i don't know there's
34:10just something about them i can just sit there and stare into it and think for ages it's really
34:17important especially on this trip there's so much madness there's so much chaos going on but every
34:20now and again just sitting down stopping and just the letter my mind wander is what i need
34:27three or four years ago i wouldn't have been able to do this
34:30when i was younger i just didn't like who i was what kind of triggered it was the transition from
34:36my primary to secondary school i don't know i feel like that just brought up some emotion in me that
34:42i couldn't shift you know i was just worried about everything i was kind of at my lowest and the
34:47main
34:48kind of support i had was my parents you know they were always there always worrying for me and that
34:53made me feel even worse sometimes because i knew they were there but i hate seeing my parents
35:18you're good i'm fine until i talk about it throughout school when i was having my struggles alfie
35:25supported me in so many ways he would always listen to me he'd always give me a different
35:30perspective we'd just do something together and it would take my mind off it and he knew that
35:37owen is a product of his parents they've done an unbelievable job and that's what i aspire to be
35:42because high level parenting provides people like owen and that's what the world needs i'm all for
35:51progressing as much as we can and trying to win but i know i'll get home and regret it if
35:57we just
35:57blast it or and don't just take a minute like we are now so obviously we want to head north
36:08to get onto the checkpoint concane is quite a heavy transport central point so if we can just get
36:14there and then almost travel to the white water rafting the boys thai adventure is not over
36:21hatching a plan to go white water rafting tomorrow owen and alfie are headed northeast to the city of
36:27concane
36:47and they're looking to make up some miles
36:54oh it's potent it's dripping
36:58it smells potent it smells of food
37:05hopping from bus to bus they are aiming to reach the city of pit san yolo by tonight
37:15one one okay yeah 16 40. should we go yeah let's go
37:25what did you give me the right ticket what did you just give me shoot where did i hold on
37:34no you gave me the tickets and when did i give them to you around there around where we've lost
37:40our ticket that's okay thank you was that the right ticket no but they took pictures of us okay
37:47bloody devil i'll tell you that's just don't touch anything from your pockets going forward
38:03it's actually starting to get to me today it's the little digs and all the rest of it and being
38:09with isabel 24 7 i don't even get any space emotionally from it what have i said you've just shut
38:17down
38:18the communication is all for a girl it almost feels like it's getting a bit more tense rather
38:24than less tense but i'd like to have a little plan in place the plan in place will be to
38:30see if there's
38:30any trains all right i think that is slowing us down but i don't know how to break through whatever
38:36barrier there seems to be i can't win no matter what i say anyway as well she's gonna need to
38:43stop
38:43beating me up because you know what you feel like you just want to throw in the towel
38:52440 kilometers northeast oh my god look how beautiful i hope that's not the only elephant we
38:59see betty and james are venturing further off the beaten track deep into rural thailand
39:07reaching the province of royette a region famed for farming high quality jasmine rice grown in paddies
39:16traditionally ploughed by water buffalo
39:25hello good afternoon welcome to the farm
39:30with money tight betty and james have answered an ad in the jobs directory
39:35here you go bon appetit in exchange for some elbow grease they'll receive local wages and bed and board
39:43for the night we're literally being paid like one pound something an hour and we could do with a little
39:50bit more and we look overjoyed that smile on your face being on you know the race with betty you
39:57know
39:57the money had been lost and having to have those sort of moments where we do feel emotional it's not
40:01easy still but i think keeping myself happy keeps betty happy as well that was quite fun actually i was
40:08feeling a bit upset and she was there for me it was really nice she was sort of that shoulder
40:10to cry on
40:12you know you just don't want to feel like you've let someone down
40:16his name is joshua i want to spray him first oh my god he's huge just be careful of the
40:23feet
40:24because it's 1.3 tons rude boy his ad is the most sensitive and he likes people to just make
40:32him relax
40:33nah a bit closer i'm not about relationship i think what surprises me about james and i is like i
40:42really expect us to just kind of get on this well the first night of this leg when he was
40:46a bit
40:46down because of the money belt situation in the weirdest way it was like nice to see him emotional
40:52and i think he's a bit softy at heart to be honest he likes that yeah he does like that
40:58but i don't
41:03800 that's a bit more than we were expecting actually i reckon washing our friend you know josh gave
41:18some more dosh having clocked up almost 640 kilometers since this morning thank you very much
41:24cheers steven and viv have at last arrived in the city of lampang in my head i plan my birthday
41:32a little
41:33bit differently 10-hour bus turned into a 12-hour bus yeah they're just draining the toilet off i mean
41:39i'm just happy to be here happy to still be alive happy to be in the race happy to be
41:43in lampang you
41:44know just i'm just happy their endurance test has paid off landing them within 300 kilometers of the
41:51checkpoint closer than any of the other teams happy birthday my darling cheers
42:01first one since i've been 66
42:06officially getting your pension and your bus pass yeah i know do you want another one going then that's
42:14this is the problem isn't it you can't say no i'll put take it out my pension thank goodness for
42:19that
42:20early start for work you are for this white water off in them yeah yeah nice once we've done that
42:29i
42:29think it's then time to head to checkpoint having spent the past seven hours on local transport trying
42:35to reach the city of con ken alfie and owen need to change trains once more hello um can we
42:42get two
42:43tickets to kong ken please oh every train is full tomorrow tomorrow we might be allowed to be absolutely
42:54doomed the next one we can get is a 10 30 yeah but look at the time it gets in
43:003 30 the final rafts
43:01at 3 30. is there any way to get to fit sanyalok
43:062 10 2 p.m tomorrow yeah yeah we're actually covered i feel sick for the first time we're
43:19actually yeah you don't have to keep saying it like we're just gonna have to stay here tonight
43:26this is the worst on the race that i felt i don't know how we bounce back from this we
43:32are absolutely
43:34stuffed we're gonna have to try and just gun it to checkpoint it's just putting a lot of pressure on
43:39us getting from one place all the way to checkpoint i don't think there is another option
43:45the worry now is that we had a big lead we don't know where the others are in the race
43:49we could be sort of 18 hours 24 hours behind by the time we get to checkpoint and we're in
43:56the middle
44:10the ancient city of pittsagnolo famed for its ornate architecture
44:18oh i think these are plastic lilies they're not real but also the ban klong water lily park
44:25i'm not standing on that you must be joking offering a photo opportunity for visitors brave
44:31enough to step onto a specially reinforced giant lily pad remember i can't do both i can't catch you and
44:38take a photo you're not gonna catch me anyway i just don't want to stand here mum come on i'm
44:45gonna
44:46carry on walking this way mum you're ignoring what i'm saying what's wrong to be honest i question why
44:57you want me on the race because at the moment i feel like i am your punch bag mum i
45:04thought this
45:04be an opportunity for us to get to know one another and connect a bit emotionally the sort
45:09of conversations i think we could be having we don't have we could have them but i would suggest
45:14that maybe you shut me down you you come across as being irritated by me as well i think i'm
45:21very
45:21impatient with a lot of people that's one thing i've realized is a massive flaw of my in my impatience
45:25but a lot of the time you don't actually express what you're thinking i always have to feel like i
45:30need to read your expression but you read them wrong if you vocalize and actually said how you
45:36were feeling it'd be easier i don't hear oh i feel this way you don't say that often so what
45:42i will
45:42say then isabel i will tell you in the moment but i don't want to battle with you i want
45:47to address
45:47it rather than just sweep it under the carpet okay so there's things that we can improve
45:53right in terms of how we communicate with each other and i and i'm hearing that all right
46:03we're a long way from things being mended but it's quite useful having certain things out in the
46:12open we've been first for checkpoint one first for checkpoint two second for checkpoint three
46:17so maybe it would work even better if we could sort the relationship side out
46:24260 kilometers north of pittsangelo outside the city of lampang horse poo oh this is one's favorite
46:35a place known historically in thailand as horse carriage city actually you pre-scrape over there for me
46:42oh ah don't let your handle fall oh geez viv and stephen are toiling at a stables where wooden
46:50carriages are still hand built and horses are specially bred to pull them i sort of suspected it
46:57was more carriage than horse i thought i wanted something a little bit more specialized and intrinsic
47:04it's dark in here stinks of horse horse poo bare hands it's not a pleasant experience this is
47:11not something i would ever choose to do i think a firm poo is good as a general life skill
47:18stephen just hates getting muck on his fingers whereas i don't mind it swish the bucket out with
47:23your hand going forwards he's going to have to come out of his comfort zone
47:30he used to live in a porter cabin when i first met him well i used to say that he
47:35was like my little
47:36fireman actually like he just used to look like that in his shorts and and his wellies and now
47:41he's just like gone miss precious oh that's terrible look at this muck here i just i don't know if
47:47i've
47:47turned him into this cosseted thing that doesn't like getting his hands dirty nothing worse than a sloppy
47:55poo do you want me in overalls and worky that's what you used to be like so you like that
48:01did you
48:01i thought we'd both grown out of this i always get the impression you rather like your lady's lifestyle
48:06hmm i do but i can also knuckle down my job as i've got older i've just changed over time
48:19perhaps the vulnerability uh self-preservation i know i need to do more to help the but she empowers
48:27me to let me do what i want but i would be so scared of my not being enough i
48:33suppose
48:36thank you very much such a nice day thank you thank you ah i've got blister i've got a blood
48:42blister
48:43that i feel like checking into a hotel and just getting clean let's head to trangmine we've got a
48:48dash to the checkpoint
48:51the teams can approach the fourth checkpoint may sar yang from two directions
48:58the northeast via the major city of chiang mai or the south via me sought
49:05james you bug reeks of fish what having worked their way through thailand's remote east
49:12do you go to may sought eight forty betty and james are now swinging across country to reach may sought
49:19tonight somewhere juices from a bag of fish has leaked all over my bag oh my god
49:30while in pittsagnolo push me up he's got you isabel and eugenie board a night train
49:38there's no legwork this for eight hours bound for chiang mai arriving in the morning you want your
49:46biscuit
49:57well you say that i'll get the bags then chiang mai bus station right bus ticket office 200 kilometers
50:05northeast northeast of the checkpoint where do we get where do we buy ticket over there thank you
50:12hello we're trying to get to may sarion you want to take us oh you're such a lovely man oh
50:20my goodness
50:21thank you oh i've seen you jamie and isabel you're kidding me oh god oh god oh gee whiz now
50:30the race
50:30is on isn't it yeah no no they're gonna see us
50:41they left last seeing them we definitely need to get the quickest route possible it has influenced us
50:50uh and the race is on uh and the race is on keep going
50:57i think we can outrun them my sariang two people fast
51:03two thousand five hundred for two people now now right come on which one
51:15the fact that we've actually caught up 16 hours and at the same place at the same time as then
51:21that's really encouraging how fast is he going then the speedo's broken
51:30you've got a knife i'm hoping to peg it what this is what you call a big
51:37mum stop saying that it's called segmenting
51:41i thought someone said prick
51:48while two teams race to the checkpoint from the northeast
51:52we're on our way at least finally not so expensive either
51:57approaching from the south along the myanmar border
52:02there's some fresh air in them hills james and betty are weaving through the peaks of the shan highlands
52:08when we made our structure of the leg we wanted to get a little bit more of this didn't we
52:11the less touristy bits and we've definitely got that i'm actually
52:15glad we came this way just for this view for the first time like i've ever seen anything like this
52:21to be honest
52:28oh goodness me three thousand thank you
52:38it's the end of the buddhist holiday period vasa
52:42and may sariang is decked out for the traditional festival of celebration
52:50make your way to the mekong bridge
52:59oh this is it here we go oh thank you you know where my kong bridge is kong as in
53:06king kong
53:06straight on thank you oh go oh it's bloody beautiful
53:13make on bridge there's no signs oh there's a bridge with all the lanterns and things
53:21600 meters upstream is a teak building the hotel river house
53:24taking the main road proceed on foot what's upstream and the water's going that way no i
53:30thought that's downstream don't know i'm dripping there's a bridge there's a bridge come on okay
53:37there's people behind us we need to do this there's the others up ahead oh yes mum we need
53:44to speed up i am right there i'm keeping up now get out the way oh gosh come on mom
53:51speed up well this
53:53is the main road upstream is that way go straight ahead straight ahead could it not be down there
53:58should we oh i'm guessing we turn left i think i might have messed up this isn't a main road
54:06okay
54:09come on then instead of taking the main road so i'm going straight on oh god
54:16mom speed up they're coming back here we go
54:21so if they're going that way are they coming this way i can't see not bother turn left
54:28careful careful keep going i think we need to follow it around
54:33i can't see him can't hear him push for the finish come on
54:41oh my god
54:49this is what i was after yeah this is
54:51i have just kind of forgotten about the fact that we do need to get to checkpoint today
54:57and if we don't then it is a disaster i've also forgotten that we might need to spend 110
55:03pound on a taxi i've also forgotten that i might die and it won't matter
55:11this is what i imagine a teak building to be like though yeah yeah i think so is this the
55:18hotel river
55:19house oh teak is a hardwood dark rich luscious i had furniture made out of it a long time ago
55:32i can't do this you can just keep walking oh mom it's not far
55:38how long we've got this well we're not going to be lasses there behind us
55:43so it's third or upwards can you speed up us all i could try
55:49hotel river house there it is come on push for the finish
55:53coming up on the inside is vivian she's overtaking stephen good girl come on oh

56:28beside me i couldn't couldn't do this couldn't do it at all shucks go get a room oh it was
56:37really
56:37really close sorry it's just yeah i couldn't go any faster it's not been too negative a second yeah
56:43two minutes between us so it seems to be working it's almost like we need that morale boost so yeah
56:49i think that's our strategy going forward hello oh go on steven and move leg four started very
56:59very rocky it couldn't have started much worse the route we took was just unreal we'll never forget
57:05the boys have dropped off massively hello is there any way you could call us a taxi we need to
57:13go to my
57:14sarayang 5 800 oh my god 5 800 me it's a situation there's no dressing it up it's so much
57:25money to get
57:25to where we need to go neither of us want to make this decision you know we don't want to
57:30get a taxi
57:30neither of us but at the end of the day we've got to do what we've got to do there's
57:34just this looming
57:35cloud over me thinking like is this going to bite us in the ass let it down the road oh
57:40well 480
57:42kilometers strapping i'm genuinely so scared to open up that book tonight
