00:00Hey, I'm Scott Shulstone, and I'm on the go here with filmmaker, content creator, Marky Plyer.
00:04Thanks for being here.
00:05Ah, good to be here, thanks.
00:09We are in Cannes. It's beautiful, obviously.
00:12Tell me, what is it like to be here as a filmmaker?
00:14Because I flew in just real quick to be part of this YouTube crossover.
00:20Kind of right now, I'm just looking at the beach and the ocean. It's beautiful.
00:22I wonder what's going on down there.
00:23A lot of braiders are trying to do what you did, which was take it from YouTube,
00:27and then, I don't know, let's just call it a little bit more traditional filmmaking.
00:31What do you think people still underestimate about making that transition successful?
00:36I don't know if anyone's underestimating it.
00:38Probably most people going into it aren't going into it with a foolish sense of self-confidence.
00:43Because I went into it with a foolish sense of self-confidence, and that got me far.
00:48You need to be of a certain skill at crafting a story together.
00:53You've got to know your way around a camera.
00:54You've at least got to know your way around making a film short or long.
00:58YouTube is uniquely positioned for that.
01:00It trains people to do, from concepting from start to finish, going all the way there.
01:05I think it's just as daunting as it sounds, but, you know, I've got a lot of faith in YouTubers
01:09to do it.
01:10You are putting Iron Lung on YouTube.
01:12What can you tell us about that really quick?
01:14I had a lot of options to bring the movie to market after it came out in theaters.
01:20I had been debating these offers from a few studios, and there was a fan there who was a film
01:26student.
01:27And she was talking to me about how much it meant to, you know, me doing this independent, because it
01:34gave hope for film students.
01:35I floated the idea, what would you think if I said I was debating some studio deals, and just she
01:41had this look of betrayal in her eyes, and she said, please don't.
01:44Wow.
01:45Like, literally, please don't.
01:46This means a lot that you went independent.
01:49But the way I went to YouTube is I said, hey, if I can put this up on YouTube, because
01:54you have a page to sell movies, and you let me do it as an aggregator, like I don't go
01:59through anyone else.
01:59Make me an aggregator, and then I can say, you know, I'm putting it up through my own system that
02:06you have set up for me, and I will release it exclusively on YouTube movies if you help me with
02:12that.
02:12And because my audience is already on YouTube, it kind of makes sense anyway.
02:16It makes sense, yeah.
02:16And so you're going to be able to check that out on YouTube on May 31st, right?
02:19May 31st, hopefully.
02:20May 31st, check out Iron Lung on YouTube.
02:22Mark, I really appreciate your time.
02:24Thanks for being here.
