00:00A court in Kenya has suspended plans by the United States to open an Ebola quarantine facility in the country
00:07for American citizens exposed to the rare strain of the virus.
00:11U.S. officials had said the unit would be set up in an air force base in central Kenya,
00:15and on Thursday the Nairobi government provided written approval for the plan.
00:19But in a petition to the court on Friday,
00:22Katiba Institute Legal Advocacy Group argued the move could endanger public health.
00:27The Constitution is there for a reason.
00:28It is there to safeguard Kenyans,
00:31and the government is in fact required to be acting in the best interest of the people in Kenya.
00:39The U.S. government does not have those kinds of obligations, those duties towards us here in Kenya.
00:45There has been a public outcry in Kenya to Washington's plan to bring in Americans
00:50exposed to the highly infectious disease in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.
00:59That news did not find me well, because Ebola is such a dangerous disease.
01:04Firstly, why do they want to get infected people and bring them to Kenya?
01:08Kenya is not a dumping area for such sick people.
01:12It's a dangerous disease, in that if we get just one infected case,
01:17it will spread very fast and it will get to the rest of us easily.
01:24It's like the government has given a lot of the money by the U.S.
01:30So it's like they are selling us,
01:32and the disease is really easily transmitted from one person to another person.
01:37Yeah, and it will be, and being treated, it will be costly.
01:44Yeah.
01:45The Kenya High Court judges barred the government from admitting anyone exposed to
01:49or infected by Ebola until Katiba's challenge is resolved.
01:53The next hearing is on the 2nd of June.
