00:00Carson Anderson outside Comerica Park for our show today. It is a Thursday afternoon game. Tigers wrap up this series
00:07with the Angels.
00:08Jack Flaherty, who every time he pitches Gator, I swear we say the same thing. Here's somebody who needs a
00:13good outing.
00:15But here's somebody who needs a good outing, and we'll get into today's matchup a little bit later on.
00:20But, Gator, yesterday we had the news that Michigan State's president was leaving, which I know a lot of Spartans
00:28were not happy about.
00:30But the news came late last night that Jeremy Fears was coming back.
00:38And probably a net positive for Michigan State fans in our audience.
00:42If they were going to take one or the other, my guess is they would take Fears.
00:45For fans.
00:46Yeah, I mean, look, I'm not thrilled with the situation in Michigan State with the Board of Trustees.
00:52Truly is probably more important.
00:54Eight presidents in eight years does not sound like a good run there.
00:58And several of them resigning with a specific edict, or the reasoning for the resigning is because of the Board
01:04of Trustees.
01:05That sucks.
01:05They'll get another president.
01:07They'll be, Michigan State will be fine.
01:08You know, moving forward, it's just changing the leadership again.
01:11It sucks how they have to do it, but they will.
01:13But getting Jeremy Fears back to that team, it's great for a bunch of reasons.
01:19I think going into his, you know, dipping the toe into the possibility of playing in the NBA right away,
01:25was met with a lot of people saying, I don't buy it.
01:31I don't think it's going to happen.
01:33And then he goes through the combine and has a phenomenal combine.
01:36The scrimmages and all that, he really starred, and people were really impressed by him.
01:40But in the end, he's going to come back.
01:43I think the experience he got had to be great experience through that.
01:47And one of the transfer players they got as well has also decided to take his name out of the...
01:53Bonkey?
01:53Yeah.
01:54He's not going to stay in the draft.
01:57So I think that's very positive news for Michigan State that you've got two guys that may have been late
02:02first-round picks
02:03or second-round picks in the NBA draft that have decided they're coming back to Michigan State and play with
02:08the rest of the guys.
02:09It's a new dynamic, and it's great probably for players, even if you're not, have no intention of leaving, to
02:15go get feedback, right?
02:16Yes.
02:17Okay, here's what you need to work on.
02:19Here's what your game is lacking.
02:21And here's, you know, what you can go get out of one more year of college.
02:25So there was that.
02:26The other thing was Jack Campbell talked yesterday, the Detroit Lion linebacker.
02:31And I, first of all, said that he made his intentions pretty clear from moment one.
02:36And he wanted to be a Detroit Lion, wanted to stay with the Detroit Lions.
02:41He also said some other interesting stuff.
02:43In fact, let's play some of it right now.
02:46First of all, linebacker, middle of the defense, heart and soul of this Detroit Lions defense.
02:52That's been handed to him from Alex Anzalone.
02:54Here's the mindset he says he has to have.
02:58You've got to have the right mindset.
03:01And I read down.
03:04I don't know how to say this.
03:05And I read now where, like, they don't really let you play.
03:09The way that you should be played is the way it should work for you.
03:13Like, you're not on the field.
03:14So you've got to get right to the mindset of just, like,
03:17you'll be whatever it takes to run.
03:19And especially now, younger guys, coming in.
03:24I mean, like, I'm from, I mean, this is just how they're going to.
03:29You've been talking about, like, it's, you've just kind of got to learn to be at the bottom of the
03:35game.
03:35I mean, it's just like, it's a mindset that I really can explain, but it's like, you've got to be
03:55done.
03:57Look.
03:58Okay.
03:59I'm sorry.
04:01I feel like that's what Chris Spielman would say about the game if he were still playing 40 years later.
04:09May not be the most articulate of statements.
04:11I don't care.
04:12I think what it means is that.
04:14He struggled to put it into words.
04:16His mind, he plays a way that works for him.
04:19I want to take your head off.
04:21Yeah.
04:22And it seems like there's definitely an edge to him, a chip on the shoulder, whatever.
04:27And he's an old school player.
04:29I loved everything I heard out of Jack Campbell yesterday from the podium.
04:33Because I think he, I mean, I imagine we're going to play some more cuts from Jack Campbell.
04:38Yes.
04:38Because he just said some things that totally will endear him to the Lions fan base if they weren't already.
04:44Yeah.
04:45I mean, that is as old school a statement.
04:48It's basically saying, I'm trying to bring an old school mentality into the new school game.
04:55And I want to stay true to that old school mentality.
04:59I want to rip your head off.
05:03But I'm going to have to find a way to play within these rules that I don't want to play
05:08by.
05:09Well, and I think we're seeing a change in the NFL over the last few years.
05:12We're starting to see that the running game is becoming more important to offenses now.
05:17It used to be this massive passing league, and it still will be.
05:19But there is more of an emphasis on running the ball.
05:23And that's why Jack Campbell is considered one of the best off-ball linebackers in football.
05:29Because he wraps his arms around you.
05:30You're done.
05:31You're going to the ground.
05:32He is a throwback.
05:34He is Chris Bielman.
05:35When you heard that, Doug, did you go full fourth wing?
05:41Ken, you never go full fourth wing.
05:43I don't know.
05:43That one might have been for Doug.
05:44That was pretty good.
05:46That was pretty good.
05:47Doug's been fourth wing for years now.
05:49So, look, you know, when you're doing research on a player for the draft,
05:56the linebacker and the mentality is one of the reasons why I loved the kid who went to Dallas
06:04with three names from Boise State.
06:06Wait, I keep wanting to say Kyle Vandenbosch.
06:08I know.
06:08It's not Kyle Vandenbosch.
06:10You know who I mean.
06:11The Lions missed him by a pick.
06:13Ended up taking Frank Ragnar, I think, with the next pick.
06:15So, it all worked out.
06:16But that dude that was a linebacker for Dallas and was just a wrecking ball for years.
06:21That's Jack Campbell.
06:23And how about this one?
06:26We know that they turned down the fifth-year option,
06:29which means they went into contract negotiations.
06:32And he said something that actually ended up apologizing.
06:36Listen to this and what he had to say about the contract and the money he was after.
06:41I kind of came up to go over on the island.
06:45I found my mom out of the island.
06:47I heard him a lot of times.
06:50And I played a lot.
06:52And I just knew.
06:54I mean, that first-year-old was simply, I already had nothing left.
07:00So, the reason he was more about the first-year-old was just like,
07:04I'm going to be in the entire world because I feel like I'm going to be on a national barrage.
07:11I feel like I'm a national barrage.
07:20Yeah, they too.
07:23And I just feel like for me, I knew what I wanted in this.
07:28I want to help the team and be what's positive.
07:31And just to continue to keep the court together.
07:33So, I mean, like I mean, I feel like it's true for the team.
07:40that guy can run for mayor with that statement i mean that's everything that every lions fan
07:46wants to hear from a player that's ready to go into negotiations and sign a contract extension
07:52and this guy comes out and says yeah i could have gotten a lot more but it's not about the
07:56money i
07:56got plenty of money i don't have to worry about that i want to make sure that we can keep
08:00our
08:00core players moving forward and i'll still play at this elite level i think i'm starting to like him
08:07oh no i think doug got something uh an infectious groin disease from listening to that one yeah
08:13dude how is this not does anybody else am i the only one that this is my favorite line
08:21i think honestly if people read about that today or saw those the video of it or are listening to
08:29for the first time right now if you didn't love jack campbell before you probably do now
08:35those i mean you could not say it any better than that to to ingratiate yourself to this he said
08:41every fan says how much is enough he's like i got more than enough i got more than enough
08:47he actually said it and then went to the table and negotiated that well and then the way he talked
08:52about the fans yeah yeah um i i mean talking about the blue collar mentality and all this and the
09:01the fans are the heartbeat of the city and all that yeah and the lions are with them because the
09:06relationship they have with the with the fans it's all that he's not flashy you know no he's not
09:12going to get the headlines and and and detroit loves not flashy yes he just does the job that's why
09:18and we love kate cunningham right now it's like with the barry sanders and chris spielman it's
09:23chris spielman all over again it's chris spielman all over again and and no slight to chris
09:28maybe a better athlete you know it's a different era today you say that to chris that was scott
09:34anderson i said it about him not to him no i i mean i'd be curious i'd love to hear
09:40what
09:40what spielman says about this guy because i think he has to love him because he knows it's
09:44it's like a carbon copy but it's an updated version of it 30 years later well i i mean i'm
09:53i'm not 40 years later this this guy is i'm i'm so fired up he's in the middle of the
10:01defense
10:02and go out there and beat everybody no no i'm nervous sitting this close to him to be honest with
10:08you
10:11it's getting a little hot yeah easy big fella save that fire what what i mean what what a guy
10:19what a guy
