00:00Ghanaians assemble at Ghana's diplomatic mission in Pretoria to leave their life in
00:05South Africa behind. It's the first batch of around 300 people who want to leave because
00:12of the growing anti-immigrant protests.
00:17Based on the current situation of constant xenophobic attack or harassment from the South
00:27African people, I felt there is a need for me to go home.
00:33Buses stand ready to drive the migrants and all their belongings to the airport for repatriation
00:38flights organised by Ghanaian authorities. The Ghanaian High Commissioner says hundreds
00:43more want to leave and that the government plans to help them reintegrate into Ghanaian
00:47society.
00:49These are proud Ghanaians, proud citizens of Ghana, proud individuals who hold their heads
00:56high. Because they were here doing legitimate business, some documented, others undocumented.
01:02And I believe that the discourse is not about them being any problematic residents in this
01:08country. We've gone through all the processes. None of them, not even a single one of them
01:13has been found to have any criminal record. And for me, that makes me proud.
01:20Anti-immigrant groups like Operation Dudula and March and March accuse migrants from other
01:27African countries of driving up crime and say that many are in South Africa illegally.
01:34And as the economy struggles with unemployment at around 30 percent, their message is resonating
01:41with many South Africans.
01:49At the airport in Johannesburg, the Ghanaians wait to fly home. Many other African countries
01:55are advising their citizens to be careful in South Africa as tensions there rise. The anti-immigrant
02:02protest groups are demanding that all undocumented immigrants leave the country by the end of June.
02:11So, let's start going.
02:12So, let's finish this email.
02:12Let's finish this email.
02:12We've been waiting for the Attack of the Hatties.
02:13And I will get it tonight.
02:13So, let's finish this email.
02:13And you know, let's finish this.
02:13We've got to come and see the telephone ranks in a way to do this.
02:13And you might see it in the show.
