00:00This is the Injury Report, presented by NYU Langone Health.
00:05Yankees hitman Giancarlo Stanton hasn't played a game since April 24th,
00:09so what could still be going on with this man's calf?
00:14Big G is going to undergo imaging on the injured calf, hoping to be cleared for running.
00:18So in today's Injury Report, we're talking with Dr. Spencer Stein,
00:22orthopedic surgeon over at NYU Langone,
00:25to try and get some sort of idea of what could be going on with the calf
00:29because this dude was placed on the 10-day IL on April 27th, Doc.
00:35Let's get straight up into this.
00:37Again, he's been out for about a month and two days.
00:39He is hitting, and he is doing some plyometric exercises,
00:43but he hasn't been cleared to run just yet.
00:46Where is he in the recovery, and what are they looking for when he undergoes the imaging?
00:53He's probably about midway through the recovery.
00:56It's reassuring that he's hitting, and that he's doing some exercises like plyometrics.
01:02The next step is running and jogging, and that's when it can allow him to get around the bases.
01:07What they're looking for on imaging is really the muscle organization, the collagen organization,
01:13and see if there's any signs of healing.
01:15Is it still disrupted?
01:17Is there ongoing healing?
01:18And what part of the recovery is he at?
01:22And that will help dictate how much they can push him.
01:24Do your patients who come into your office over at NYU Langone who don't play professional sports,
01:31do they usually take this long to heal?
01:34And would you be as careful with them as the Yankees are with Big G,
01:38or do you advise a more aggressive rehab and treatment when it comes to the calf?
01:43It's really patient or athlete-specific.
01:46So lower-grain injuries can be one to two weeks.
01:49Higher-grain calf injuries can take up to six weeks.
01:52And again, it's really patient-specific.
01:54It's almost like a day-by-day.
01:55So if they're doing well, we progress them.
01:58But if they're having difficulties, then we kind of hold them back a little bit.
02:01Either way, though, we do do early rehab, and that's been shown to decrease the overall recovery rates.
02:06And we also have other options, like different injection options, different more intense rehab therapies.
02:12But again, it's really patient-specific.
02:14And overall, they probably are being a little bit more cautious with him,
02:18given that we're early in the season, and they really want to prevent re-injury for such an important play.
02:23And he has a lot of soft tissue injuries in his past as well.
02:28So I can see that, like you said, not being too aggressive with that rehab.
02:32But, Doc, with what you said, that's why you guys are the best in the business.
02:36Appreciate you hopping on with us today.
02:38Anytime. Thank you.
