00:00...which he's taken multiple poles, two in the last two Grand Prix, add the Sprint Grand Prix pole yesterday to
00:07that collection, and is it going to be four in a row? Let's see Martin Brundle.
00:13It's so hard to tell if they're really going for it because they're so late on the throttle, aren't they,
00:17before they get to the line to keep their battery intact, the back end of the car sliding around on
00:22the exit of Turn 2.
00:23This is where we picked him up last time, five flat out these days, and then this is where the
00:29back end let go before, and he seems slightly tentative, but he's on his way, needs a 20.6, 20
00:37.5 first sector, he has a 20.6.
00:41So, he's got space ahead of him to drive into, Franco Colopinto, just the car, you can't quite see him
00:49in the distance, going around the hairpin now, there he is, just making his way through, George Russell is a
00:5510.5 off the pace here, will, I would imagine, have another lap up his sleeve in terms of fuel
01:01to contend with,
01:02because he's gone out there a little bit earlier than the others, Max Verstappen behind him, and Max Verstappen is
01:08on a flying lap, but down significantly on George Russell.
01:11Russell getting a nice bit of slipstream there, from the back marker, getting ready to do his flying lap, over
01:19the line he goes, stays hard right, it's only P3, quarter of a second behind Norris, this is a surprise.
01:26It's, uh, can be repaired for George Russell, Max Verstappen down in seventh, really struggling, uh, with straight line speed,
01:33is that all about deployment, uh, I wonder, uh, Max being hampered, as Bernie was saying, losing speed, compared to
01:39cars around him, 50 meters, before the braking zone at turn eight, and turn ten, Kimi Antonelli, uh, is currently
01:46in P5, with his latest run to come, and it looks like, as he's not weaving down the straight, this
01:52is his next run to come, the man who's taken the pole in the line,
01:55last three Grand Prix, and his last, uh, full beans lap as well, he's got to spot all those breaking
02:02points, absolutely perfectly, really needs a 20.5, 20.4 first sector, uh, if he can, if he wants to
02:10stick this on pole position, we'll see what that is shortly, but, uh, Antonelli, on his, it's a 20.5,
02:18he's fastest of anybody, so the lap has started very, very well for the teenager.
02:23The man who took his maiden podium position, with third, uh, here in Montreal last year, from fourth on the
02:30grid, he's got the slight advantage, Charles Leclerc is right there with him though, it's just mere hundreds of a
02:35second between it, as Antonelli drives through, a cloud of dust, that I dare say, uh, was kicked up by
02:41one of the cars in front, and he's now fractionally outside of a time he needs, for pole position, Hamilton
02:47hasn't had the best first sector, he's a couple of tenths down.
02:50Yeah, it was a 23-0 for the middle sector, for Antonelli, so he's got it all to do now,
02:56uh, through the final chicane, you've got to really commit and flow through here, you make a mistake on the
03:01way and you'll never rescue it, absolutely flat out through the exit car, moving around, and Antonelli does go fastest.
03:10Three poles in a row, could be four poles in a row in Grand Prix's, for Kimi Antonelli, they are
03:17charging fast behind him, the two McLarens improving in the middle sector, Leclerc goes to P4, Lewis Hamilton, his teammate
03:24down in P3,
03:26and Hamilton, he's gone and made way here for the charging Lando Norris, I'm assuming Ferrari think he can still
03:33make it to the line in time, right, can Lando Norris snatch pole position back again, no, he's on the
03:38front row, and it leaves Kimi Antonelli out in front,
03:41but here's Oscar Piastri, next across the line for McLaren, what can he do, only third, Antonelli stays on pole
03:50position, but George Russell goes fastest through the middle sector,
03:54Hajar next across the line, P5 for him, well ahead of his teammate Max Verstappen, who says it's just impossible
04:00out there at the moment, George Russell through the final chicane,
04:03we've got Kimi Antonelli trying to make it four poles in a row, here in Montreal, is it four poles
04:09in a row for Russell, it is, by merest hundreds of a second, George Russell's done it right at the
04:15end,
04:16Verstappen goes P6, and just ahead of his teammate Isaac Hajar, and it was nip and tuck between the two
04:23Mercedes drivers, but like sprint qualifying, George Russell has left his best till last, and he takes it.
04:32What a brilliant qualifying session, that was pure class from the lot of them, absolutely full commitment, the drivers went
04:41out and made the difference,
04:42wherever they were, whatever they were struggling with, they went out and just threw caution to the wind, gave it
04:48absolutely everything,
04:50Lewis Hamilton pitted at the end of his lap, unfortunately, and presumably he's going to have a moment somewhere,
04:57there, there, big over, oh yeah, up against the wall, and he knows that that's effectively thrown away,
05:02a quarter, half second, and that matters a lot these days, so he's been pushing the car hard, has Lewis
05:10Hamilton,
05:11somewhere, there, big over, oh yeah, up against the wall, and he knows that that's effectively thrown away,
05:17a quarter, half second, and that matters a lot these days, so he's been pushing the car hard, has Lewis
05:25Hamilton,

10:13ДИНАМИЧНАЯ МУЗЫКА
10:43It's clear that these guys are just a little bit quicker.
10:46It's nice to be close than we were yesterday.
10:48So, no, I mean, I had fun this morning.
10:50Of course, the weather's going to be different tomorrow.
10:52So we'll wait and see.
10:53But we're in a good place, and we're in the place we need to be.
10:57Good luck tomorrow.
10:58And just back to you, George.
10:59Obviously, we saw some great racing earlier today.
11:02Do you think it's going to be the same again tomorrow?
11:04The glove's going to be off, or have you been told something different?
11:06No, I mean, we've had a good chat since this morning.
11:10And, you know, we're both racing drivers.
11:13We both know what to do.
11:14We both respect one another.
11:16So we'll go racing.
11:17I think, you know, we hope it's just battling the two of us.
11:20But we saw today how competitive everybody else is.
11:22Tomorrow looks to be wet.
11:23That's going to be a whole new challenge as well.
11:25So to be honest, it's not really what we're thinking about now.
11:28We just want to ensure that we can be standing on the top step.
11:30Good luck.
11:31Thank you so much.
11:32Thanks, everybody.
11:37Yeah, great qualifying session.
11:39Same top three as yesterday.
11:41Same top five, actually, as yesterday.
11:44And the same margin between the two Mercedes drivers.
11:47But you could hear what that meant to George after that, as we said,
11:52feisty encounter in the sprint.
11:54And you could expect a repeat of that tomorrow.
11:57But vastly different conditions are predicted.
12:01That is George's third consecutive pole position here in Montreal.
12:06It is a track that he loves.
12:08We know that.
12:09We knew that coming in to the weekend.
12:11The question is, can he convert it as he did last year?
12:15We shall see.
12:16But that's for tomorrow.
12:17And here's the plan.
12:24Welcome to Canada.
12:26Did you know Cirque du Soleil originates from Montreal?
12:30Yeah, I just thought that's five minutes ago.
12:32Come on, send in, send in.
12:39Am I faster than him?
12:41No.
12:41Yes.
12:46Sorry, mate.
12:51You see, there's loads of media about Max or this or whatever.
12:55You and Toto rock solid, aren't you?
12:57Yeah, for sure.
12:57I mean, when we have a super close relationship,
12:59we've been through the tough moments in the last, you know,
13:02four years trying to bring Mercedes back on top.
13:04And now we're in this position that we're both in a fortunate place
13:08that we're fighting for wins week in, week out.
13:15Yes, please keep you entertained in the build-up to lights out,
13:18which is at nine o'clock.
13:28Survival is an instinct.
13:30It's ingrained in our nature.
13:32It is the fundamental evolutionary drive for self-preservation.
13:36It's the last breath in your lungs.
13:38It's the voice in your head telling you to keep going.
13:40When everything else tells you you're done,
13:42when everything else feels lost,
13:44you either fold or you fight,
13:47break or you be broken.
13:49This is where mistakes cost more,
13:52where time runs faster
13:54and where hope disappears.
13:57It's a long way back now.
14:00You are never too big to go down.
14:03And all those trophies,
14:05all those legends,
14:06all those names carved into history,
14:08they can't walk onto the pitch to save you now.
14:11So be bold,
14:12be obsessive,
14:14wanting more than anything.
14:17A glimmer of Tottenham sunlight!
14:22Just...
14:24survive.
14:37Who will survive?
14:39Will it be Spurs?
14:39Will it be West Ham?
14:40There's a couple of prominent West Ham fans

36:15It's not easiest to drive.
36:19It's definitely on a fine edge.
36:23We've been driving twice in 8 weeks.
36:28Also, it's hard to stay very sharp.
36:32It's also wanting too much.
36:34That's it.
36:35Can I just elaborate on that?
36:38Do you find that you're maybe using a lot more mental capacity to understand the car
36:42and be able to drive the car?

38:16I think from Max's point of view, it sounds like nothing seems to be working.
38:20Last year, we saw them often turn things around very quickly and well across a weekend.
38:25Everything they're doing now that they think will work doesn't seem to be working.
38:28And I think they've turned that car upside down and back again.
38:30And it still doesn't seem to be giving him what he needs.
38:33Like the rear wing.
38:34Exactly.
38:34Yeah, we've got one driver in here to catch.
38:37I think he's the new harshest man on himself, isn't he, in the paddock?
38:41Because, I mean, he was leading at the end of Q2.
38:43So, he was in there, but then he was just saying, I could have been much further up there and
38:47it wasn't too bad a car.
38:49But that's maybe what he sees.
38:50He sees him at the top of the timesheet at the end of Q2.
38:53Then he thinks that if everyone, every other driver, I think, at times thinks everyone else has got the best
38:58out of their car.
38:59And they say, oh, if I could find these two tenths, they move their position up the timesheet without two
39:04tenths.
39:05But what will happen when he goes back into the engineering office,
39:08they'll show him all the little bits that all the other drivers didn't quite put together in those Q2 laps
39:12or their Q2 at three laps.
39:14And I think drivers sometimes get almost caught up on those little mistakes, the tenths or the half-a-tenths.
39:21But you need that to be driving on the limit.
39:24You need that to be getting the most out of the car.
39:26It's very hard.
39:27Jamie's mentioned it many times this weekend, to get everything out of a lap around here.
39:31And Isaac A is being very hard on himself there.
39:33OK.
39:34We're going to take a short break.
39:35We'll wrap things up on the other side of it.
39:38We'll get the thoughts of the Ferrari drivers.
39:40Lewis Hamilton in the end will start from fifth.
39:43And Charles Leclerc after an encounter with an unfortunate groundhog.
39:46And we'll start from eighth.
39:56Every great show's going the same way.
39:59A little noise, a little nerves, a little something to prove.
40:05Can you feel it?
40:07All around 350,000 people packed in, leaning forward, just waiting for you to give them what
40:14they came for.
40:15A show!
40:18This stage ain't for the weak.
40:20Nerves is steel.
40:21You get it right, they'll never forget you.
40:24If you get it wrong, you're just a really fast footnote.
40:28It's all on the line.
40:30This is where you come to carve your name in history at more than 230 miles an hour.
40:36Welcome to the fastest racing on Earth.
40:44Yeah, big day of motorsport tomorrow as well as us here on Sky Sports F1.
40:49You'll also be able to see the 110th Indy 500th Indianapolis motor speedway at 3 o'clock.
40:56It's Sky Sports F1.
40:57Right, views from the Ferrari camp, including Fred Vasseur, including Charles Leclerc, and
41:04of course, including first of all, it was summertime.
41:07If I can ask you, you've mentioned lacking speed in the straight line, and I know that
41:11this engine upgrade opportunity could be coming to cars that are outside of the 2% of the best
41:16performing car.
41:17It's thought in the paddock, you have the best chassis, that your car is actually the best
41:20chassis.
41:21And actually, if you can get that extra bit of power, you are the ones to beat.
41:26So, are you thinking along those lines as well, are you thinking, if we can just get this,
41:30we know we have an incredible car?
41:32Yes, absolutely.
41:33I mean, the guys at the factory have done an amazing job with the car, and we still have
41:38improvements to make, but the car is fantastic.
41:42It's just, it's a battle of development through the season.
41:46Obviously, some people bring upgrades one weekend and others the other, but yeah, we're just
41:50at the mercy of the lack of power that we have, and I know that everyone worked really
41:55hard on the engine, and reliability is obviously very good.
41:59It's just, when you're lacking that straight line speed against the Merc, it's very, very
42:04tough.
42:06But nonetheless, you know, we have to expect that the rest of the season, that's just the way
42:11it is, so we'll just try and see if we can continue to add on to the car and try
42:15and
42:15close the gap, if we can go quicker through corners in some races, maybe we can get closer
42:19to the challenge in front of us.
42:21Thank you.
42:23Charles, what's the disaster?
42:25Can you define it for us and break it down?
42:28Oh, I mean, Q1, Q2, we were just having to slow down all the time on the outlaps, not
42:34putting the tyres in the right window, and I just struggled incredibly a lot to put tyres
42:39in the right window.
42:40I was just on ice throughout the whole qualifying, and after resolving, I think, a good amount
42:47of the problems we had on the brakes yesterday, I was just hoping to find the confidence, but
42:52Q1 and Q2, I was just, yeah, all over the place.
42:56And Q3, I managed to gain some confidence, and the tyres were finally more or less in the
43:01window, and that allowed me to do an acceptable lap at the end.
43:04But, I mean, acceptable, and we are P8, so it's not really acceptable, to be honest, but
43:09the lap in itself and the feeling was a bit better, but it's just too late.
43:13I mean, before that, there was not one lap where I could fail the car.
43:17You're one of the few teams who've got some data, in essence, on what it's like to drive
43:21these cars in the wet.
43:22What are your expectations for tomorrow, and is that an opportunity for you, or is it the
43:26same difficulty for everyone, essentially, in the end?
43:28I think it's going to be tricky, obviously, for absolutely everyone, and very tricky,
43:31but the only thing that worries me is that, so far, I've had a nightmare of a weekend,
43:37mostly because of temperatures, and with the wets, it shouldn't get any better on that.
43:41All right, thank you, Sean.
43:44Fred, tell us about your day, then, both in the sprint race and today.
43:47Seems to be the third quickest car, or is there a bigger story?
43:53Yeah, but we knew before the weekend that it would be difficult with the upgrade of Mercedes
43:58and McLaren, and honestly, that I was expecting probably to be a bit more far away, and I'm
44:03quite pleased with the pace from the beginning of the weekend that Lewis was P2 until the last
44:07attempt, and this, I think, it's probably a bit more than what we were expecting, but
44:15now that the frustration is more coming from the fact that we didn't put everything together
44:20in the last stint of Q3, and we had room to do much better today.
44:25Okay, and that was the case with Charles, is that why he was there?
44:28No, it was Lewis first, and Charles struggled a little bit more yesterday, a little bit with
44:34the brakes, today to warm up everything. It's true that its conditions are difficult. It's much
44:40colder than last year, with one step harder on compound, and I think the focus of everybody
44:47is on the tyre prep, prep, push, cool, push, and so, and it was the same for Russell. He
44:53put a lap together at the end, but it was difficult before. The exercise will be probably even more
44:59difficult tomorrow with colder conditions. Thank you, Fred.
45:02I wonder, I wonder, Bernie, Ferrari fans might be concerned by what they heard there from Lewis
45:08Hamilton, just about the top-line speed. I mean, they designed the architecture of this engine to
45:12feature that small turbo, but they are lacking that top-end speed. It looks like, I mean, we're going to
45:17know after Canada whether they're going to have an opportunity to upgrade their engine compared to
45:23the Mercedes and the Red Bulls, by the way, if they're outside of two percent. They need that, don't they?
45:28Yeah, I think they do need that. I think, you know, as Rachel alluded to there in a question, and
45:33Lewis was very strong in his answer to say, yes, he does believe they have the strongest
45:36chassis. In all of the corners, particularly here, you can see that that Ferrari looks much quicker than
45:41the competition, and it's down every street they seem to lose if they do not have another car in
45:47front, breaking that wind barrier for them, so breaking that tow. And that's what they'll be
45:53hoping for. Now, they've obviously decided that they're going to have this small turbo to help
45:58with the starts, to balance the circuits over the years, circuits that have more cornering,
46:03more initial accelerate, not a cornering, not the long streets we have here. This is a bit of an
46:07outlier circuit on that. So, if they get the upgrade, which everyone's sort of talking that they
46:12should get the upgrade, it's then, have they already got the upgrade ready to put on the engine
46:18for the next race that we go to? That, it'll be the question for Ferrari. How quickly can they
46:23get that upgrade on? Yeah, I agree. I do think it's a bit, it's too easy to say they have
46:29the
46:29strongest chassis just because they're quick in the corners. I think there's always a compromise in
46:33terms of where you're finding the lap time, and I think for Ferrari, for example, they seem to find
46:38that lap time corner exits, especially with the smaller turbo, they can then compromise and do
46:42different things with car setup. So, yeah, I think there's a trade-off with that, but they were
46:47looking strong in the corners. It's just obviously lacking top speed. Okay, before we go, let's hear
46:51from Arvid Lindblad inside the top 10 again. Right, I said about getting in the points earlier, you
46:58you know, come on, this is, this is great, isn't it? You must be really happy. Yeah, it's been,
47:03it's been a really good weekend so far. I'm really happy with how it's gone. I don't think it really
47:07could
47:07have gone any better, to be honest. The team have done a phenomenal job, you know, with the, with
47:11the upgrade, it's been working well. I've, I've had confidence since lap one. But, you know, I'm also,
47:16I'm very happy with myself and the job I've done, you know, it's, I was told it's probably one of
47:21the
47:21hardest weekends of the year. You know, it's, it's a street circuit, it's a challenging track, a lot of
47:26bumps, it's a sprint weekend. So, you know, to get on, get on it was, was difficult. But I think
47:34things have,
47:34yeah, like I said, I don't think it could have gone any better. And to be best at the rest
47:38again in
47:38Q3 is, is really good. Now, British drivers are known for being used to driving in the rain.
47:43So, if it is as is forecast tomorrow, do you relish that, or? I've always enjoyed driving in the rain.
47:50You know, I think, I don't know, it's fun, it's different. I think no one knows what it's going to
47:56be
47:56like in these cars, however. You know, it is, it is. I did the tire test in Suzuka and it
48:02was
48:02challenging. So, yeah, I think a lot of the race would just be about staying out of trouble,
48:09reacting to things on the fly. But in the end, we can't control the weather. So, I'm going to,
48:14I and the team are going to do everything we can to maximize the race, no matter what the condition.
48:18Great job today. Thank you. Thank you.
48:20First time round here, we've talked about that, but he's kept it consistent over the weekend.
48:24Completely. I'm super impressive, to be honest. Um, yeah, it's, it's crazy to think he had never
48:29driven this track until, until yesterday. And yeah, in Q3 and both, both qualifying sessions. So,
48:34he's been super impressive. I think he's processing a lot as he's going through it. But obviously,
48:38that seems to be working for him. I think tomorrow is going to be a different challenge. I think if
48:43the
48:43conditions are difficult, just keeping it on the track in itself is, is going to be a challenge.
48:47Yeah, I think wet conditions around here are going to lead to safety cars. And
48:50I think the biggest thing and the challenge around here is the communication. We've seen it time and
48:55time again, the communication between the driver and the pit wall, the feedback about what's happening
49:00with the radar, what rain's coming in and which tires there should be on next is going to make
49:05all the difference. Up until this point, Mercedes have gone backwards, usually on the first lap and
49:09the Ferraris have gone ahead. But it looks like on the evidence of the sprint,
49:14they might have just got on top of their starts as well. We shall see though. F1 Academy Race 2
49:20is next here on Sky Sports F1. Then Ted's qualifying notebook from quarter to midnight will return
49:26tomorrow. Different conditions. Rain expected. Mercedes locked out the front row. See you then. Bye-bye.
