09:33Would he have been part of that decision?
09:35Yes, absolutely, he would be.
09:36So I don't quite know where it's going to shake out.
09:39Max is so unhappy with the car.
09:42He says, this is impossible.
09:43What the bleep is going on here?
09:46And then again on the radio after, there's something wrong here.
09:49It's not possible.
09:51So Isaac was P1.
09:53Isaac Hadjar was P1 in Q2.
09:55So there is some pace in the car somewhere in Hadjar's hands.
09:58And then Max Verstappen with no grip, both on the outlap and on his main lap,
10:03and Isaac Hadjar knocking himself a bit, being a bit hard on himself
10:10by really underlining that when it comes to the last run on Q3,
10:14he just doesn't manage to get it together.
10:17He is, yeah, if you heard his interview with Rachel, if you didn't,
10:21he's saying, look, it's really unfortunate.
10:23I just don't feel I'm there and it's my fault.
10:26And he could have outqualified Max Verstappen.
10:29As it is, they're sixth and seventh today.
10:32And we will see.
10:33But, yeah, it's a bit of a turnaround from recently
10:36and the progress that Red Bull have been making recently
10:39in that now Max Verstappen isn't as happy with a car as he was in Miami.
10:47And maybe the Christian Horner prophecy of if Max is happy with a car,
10:54everything is good and he will stay, isn't carrying on.
10:58Because that had looked like one of the many things that Christian Horner was right about.
11:03And actually, I'd written them down in my notebook earlier on in the weekend.
11:08Things that Christian Horner was proved right about.
11:10There were seven things.
11:11I might as well share you with them now.
11:14One, these rules.
11:16Earlier on, he was somewhat of a canary in the coal mine about the rules
11:19and how the 200 kilowatt and 300 kilowatt and super clipping and megajoules
11:23and all of that needed looked at before the start of the year.
11:27So Horner was right about that.
11:28Secondly, he was right that Red Bull powertrains and Ford would be good.
11:31Thirdly, if you give Max a good car, he'll stay.
11:33Well, that's what I was just saying.
11:34And we'll see if that turns out to be true.
11:38Fourthly, Arvid Lindblad is ready and good enough now.
11:41Fifth, Honda would struggle this year.
11:43True.
11:44Sixth, Adrian Newey, as a team principal, needs a controlling figure to help him.
11:48That turned out to be absolutely true.
11:50And we'll get on to Aston Martin in a sec.
11:52And sixth and seventh, Helmut Marko.
11:55So, there you go.
11:56Just reflecting the other day on, depending on, as Christian Horner seems to have lots of,
12:03well, lots of options outside of Formula One.
12:06He was at the Formula E race the other day and at MotoGP.
12:10So, he might be doing something in there.
12:12It looks like the only chance he's got to be a team investor or co-owner or even team principal
12:17is if he starts a new team.
12:19But he says that he's got a big Chinese investor in terms of a car company.
12:25There was a rumor about it being BYD and whether they want to have a 12th team in Formula One.
12:31But I think we're some way away from that.
12:34Right.
12:35Ferrari.
12:36It seems a bit odd to do Ferrari now because we're kind of away from it.
12:41But why not?
12:43JPM is wearing red shoes.
12:44So, why don't we do Ferrari now?
12:47They are really good shoes.
12:48They look quite new, though, JPM.
12:50They haven't been released yet.
12:51They haven't been released yet.
12:53No, they're the new Bad Bunny ones.
12:54Oh, cool.
12:56Is this a world premiere?
12:58Well, you've already been wearing them on F1 TV.
13:00Yeah, but now it's all over the world.
13:03Who's going to win the 500 tomorrow?
13:05Oh.
13:06Palo.
13:07I'll go Palo.
13:08Pato Award maybe making up for last year.
13:11Maybe.
13:12I don't know if they're good enough.
13:13I think the problem with the 500, people don't understand, qualifying is completely irrelevant.
13:18Irrelevant?
13:19For me, it's completely irrelevant because the car you qualify and race is completely different.
13:23I spent loads of time watching the Fast 6.
13:26You said I did that, but now it was good.
13:27But it was amazing.
13:28It's great TV.
13:29Yeah.
13:29But to win the race, you need to have a really good handling car.
13:32Yeah.
13:33And the mistakes.
13:35You know, when people get excited and you have so many pit stops.
13:38Here we get one, two pit stops.
13:40There you get nine pit stops.
13:41You get one wrong and you're done.
13:43Good.
13:44Well, you can watch it.
13:44Thank you very much, JPM.
13:46You can watch it tomorrow before us at 5.30.
13:49The old Indy 500.
13:50One small little mistake and your day is over.
13:53Let's just do Ferrari, shall we?
13:55And then we'll take a break.
13:57And fifth for Lewis Hamilton.
14:00Eighth for Charles Leclerc.
14:02He had a brush with a groundhog in Q1.
14:04Had to pit.
14:05There was possible damage.
14:06They are investigating it.
14:07But it didn't go much better after that.
14:09What a disaster, said Leclerc.
14:10Didn't manage to put the lap together.
14:12Lewis Hamilton P5.
14:13Closer than yesterday.
14:14Two tenths was Lewis Hamilton off Mercedes.
14:17But Charles Leclerc had a real nightmare.
14:19Only a tenth behind Lewis Hamilton.
14:20But that means three places in this competitive world of Formula One.
14:24And couldn't put the lap together.
14:26Right.
14:27We'll take a break.
14:28Don't know where you are, JD.
14:29Looking at some tyres.
14:30More Notebook in a bit.
14:31While we'll have a little tour around the little paddock rest area around here.
14:38More Notebook shortly.
14:47Hi, welcome back to the qualifying Notebook or post-qualifying Notebook from the 2026 Canadian Grand Prix here in Montreal,
14:54Canada.
14:55Where we tell you what happened in the day's F1 if you weren't able to watch the day's F1.
15:00Here are colleagues from Réseau de Spor, or the Sports Network.
15:06Because, of course, they have to have everything in French and Canadian and English.
15:13Are preparing for their evening show, I believe.
15:17Touch of makeup there.
15:18And nice to know that the chocolate fingers are...
15:21We have them in the gallery here, JD.
15:23Nice to know that they've got them in the little mobile gallery here on the sound desk.
15:27Many a sound desk has been decorated by a pack of chocolate fingers.
15:31Quite right.
15:32Need something to get you through the day, sir.
15:34I absolutely agree.
15:35So we've got the poutine stand back here.
15:37We've got this weird kind of medieval torture thing where you have to hang by this...
15:42You have to hang by this bar and see how...
15:44Oh, I've got a shock of it.
15:45You have to hang by it and see what's going to...
15:50Are you meant to use both hands?
15:51I think you are meant to use both hands.
15:53And see how long you can hang there while people tickle you under the arm.
15:57I don't know.
15:57I haven't done it, JD.
15:59But hello, everybody.
16:00And so then you can watch the race that's going on.
16:04In fact, the race that you've probably just watched already.
16:06The F1 Academy.
16:08Right.
16:08Let's do Williams, shall we?
16:10And it hasn't gone any better for them, unfortunately.
16:13So the curse of the Marmot continues.
16:15Certainly for Alex Albon.
16:16Because Sainz was the lead car again.
16:18Half a second off getting into Q3.
16:20But Alex Albon missed out on Q2 by a hundredth of a second.
16:25So still pretty miserable.
16:27He's 18th.
16:28There's George.
16:28Well done again.
16:30He's 18th is Alex Albon.
16:3215th, Carlos Sainz.
16:33And as I say, pretty miserable still.
16:36George seems to be...
16:38Yeah, he's stopping for selfies.
16:40Just like Lando and Kimi.
16:42So good for him.
16:43Right.
16:44Let's go on to Racing Bulls who are here.
16:46And the star of the weekend, Arvid Lindblad continues to shine.
16:51P9, Liam Lawson, P12.
16:53Arvid Lindblad continued his...
16:56What?
16:57No camera?
16:59Karun's looking at me in a funny way.
17:00What?
17:00Where's your camera?
17:02It's JD.
17:03He just goes off.
17:04I don't need to worry about where JD is.
17:06JD will come back and find me.
17:07He's probably with George Russell or looking at some tyres.
17:10And I just carry on talking.
17:11Why?
17:11What's the problem?
17:12I just walked past and you see me just standing here talking to yourself.
17:15But I guess that's your job.
17:16Yes.
17:17Arvid Lindblad, I'd just like to reflect.
17:19Continued his superb run into Q3 again.
17:21P7 after the first run.
17:23He's dropped to P9 as others improved.
17:24But maybe still Liam a bit disappointed.
17:27A bit messy on our side.
17:28I'm not sure that Lindblad got his last run in.
17:31I don't know if you looked at it in any detail.
17:33I didn't.
17:34I've just been talking to George Russell at Skypad.
17:36Who, good news for us, says that their approach to racing will be the same.
17:40Elbows out.
17:41So that's good news.
17:42Yes, it will.
17:43Phil, do you think that Kimi will be...
17:48You said he was faster in the sprint race.
17:52I felt Kimi had more momentum there.
17:55But I don't know if that was just because he was always with the overtake.
17:58I think with the long straights, the overtake mode is proving to be more powerful than people expected.
18:04So George mentioned that Lando later on and Kimi always were in overtake and could go with him.
18:11So maybe that was why.
18:12Okay.
18:13Thank you, Karun.
18:13I will continue to talk to myself here.
18:16Fernando Alonso, 19th.
18:17Sorry, Liam Lawson, a bit messy on our side, is 12th.
18:20But that's better than nothing at all, which is what he was in sprint qualifying.
18:24But yeah, Arvid Lindblad continues to be rather brilliant on his first visit to Montreal.
18:30Hasn't gone much better for Aston Martin.
18:32Maybe I should just brush over this quite quickly because there isn't much to say.
18:37Lance Stroll got sent out with the cover on the wheel rim on the wonk, essentially.
18:44I noticed it as it passed me in the pit lane.
18:46So I guess you could see it while the wheel is turning, but maybe the mechanics couldn't see it as
18:51it was leaving the garage.
18:53So that was a bit of a problem.
18:54And they will probably get a bit of a fine from the FIA for that because it did fall off
18:59and the FIA had to deliver it back.
19:01But the pretty miserable weekend continues.
19:03The gap is less than in-queue sprint qualifying, but they're still mixing it with the Cadillacs.
19:09Alonso, 19th.
19:10Lance Stroll, 21st.
19:12And it's probably best to draw a veil over it and just leave it there.
19:16Haas hasn't gone much better for them as well.
19:18Despite some upgrades, especially to the engine cover, they seem not to have any pace in their cars.
19:26Oli was into Q2, but he said,
19:29The second you try to push this thing, it's not liking it.
19:33Not much better for Ocon.
19:34He was out in Q1 by a tenth of a second to Gabi Bortoletto.
19:39Gabi Bortoletto himself was 13th.
19:42Hulkenberg was 11th for Audi.
19:43Arg, the curse of P11 strikes again.
19:47Hulkenberg was P11 again by a hundredth of a second.
19:50Quote, I'm sick of it.
19:51Always being P11 and not getting into Q3, being able to show what he can do.
19:56Gabriel Bortoletto struggled, finished two tenths behind his teammate.
20:01So, yeah, that was where he finished.
20:04And the story is, on the old go-karting,
20:07so Alex Albon did organise a go-kart race in, I think, near their home in Monaco, these drivers,
20:16between him, Oscar Piastri, and Gabriel Bortoletto, and some local go-karters.
20:21And the result was that Piastri qualified on pole and won the race,
20:26and that Albon discovered that Bortoletto is like a wild animal on track.
20:32And Albon said he had to give Bortoletto a real wide berth,
20:37because Gabi wasn't afraid of, quote, having a go in the go-karts.
20:43But they all managed to escape without injury, which is good for them.
20:48Right, let's do, we've done Haas, let's do, and Aldi,
20:51let's do Alpine, where Franco Colopinto has continued his good run of form for P10.
20:56And into Q3, could have been a bit more.
20:58There is a reason why Pierre Gasly is only P14.
21:01That's because he picked up some damage, which they were not able to repair.
21:05Bit of a scare for Gasly, actually.
21:07He had to use another set to get through Q1,
21:10after being blocked a couple of times by Lewis Hamilton.
21:13Franco Colopinto early on complained about the deployment,
21:16quote, terrible, but managed to get on with it.
21:19Gasly had floor damage.
21:21They couldn't repair all of it, and that's why he was out.
21:24But Colopinto into Q3, and not best of the rest again.
21:28That continues to be racing bulls in the hands of Arvid Lindblad.
21:32But Colopinto happy to be in the top 10 and set for some more points.
21:37Did you hear, by the way, the funny story about how he found out
21:41that he was P7 in the Miami Grand Prix and not P8, where he crossed the road?
21:46He went back to the hotel, signed Norsgrave for a selfie for a fan,
21:50went up, came back out, and the same fan came out and said,
21:54oh, Franco, congratulations, you're P7.
21:57Franco said, no, I'm not, I'm P8.
21:59And the fan said, no, no, no, Charles Leclerc's just got a 30-second penalty
22:02for leaving the track for no reason, so you are P7.
22:04So then he checked his phone and found out that the Alpine,
22:07his engineers, had actually texted him and said,
22:09no, congratulations, you are a career-best P7 instead.
22:13So that was the funny story.
22:15Although on retelling it, maybe it doesn't quite sound
22:18quite as funny as it was when he told it to me
22:20the other day on Thursday.
22:23But there you go.
22:23Right, come on, let's wrap this up, shall we?
22:26With Cadillac, who are 22nd for Valtteri Bottas and 20th for Sergio Perez
22:33and not entirely happy is Valtteri Bottas with his car, with the setup.
22:41And I feel that there are some issues to sort out there
22:45because that is not where Bottas should be
22:47or how far he should be off his teammate Sergio Perez,
22:53taking nothing away from the good job that Perez is doing
22:55at Cadillac at the moment.
22:57Right, that is it.
22:58Let's tell you about all of the motorsport tomorrow.
23:03So have a nice night.
23:05Get to bed if you're watching this live.
23:07And we've got the Indy 500 at 5.30, but it's on Sky Sports Mix.
23:12So you can watch it there.
23:14And then join us for the Canadian Grand Prix.
23:17It's going to be wet.
23:18It's going to be wild.
23:18It's going to be all over the place.
23:21And that's a 7.30 on air.
23:25So you can watch Simon with some big umbrellas from then
23:28and a 9.00 p.m. lights out and away we go.
23:30And there'll be a notebook after that as well,
23:32letting you know what happened in the race
23:34if you weren't able to catch the race.
23:36But we'll say goodnight and hope to see you for tomorrow.
23:39Action here from Montreal.
23:41Bye-bye.
