00:22ДИНАМИЧНАЯ МУЗЫКА
00:43A feisty start to proceedings here in Montreal.
00:47For the first time this season, the Mercedes duo going toe-to-toe
00:50and it got a bit tasty as the pair vie to become top dog.
01:05That will be a penalty.
01:09Let's just get his back up to control, Kimmy.
01:11Yeah, not fair. He could be out.
01:14If you concentrate on the driving, please, not on the radio morning.
01:17Let's check the flag.
01:18Yeah, if we need to race like this, then good enough.
01:21Kimmy, we talk about this internally and not on the radio, okay?
01:26In the end, George kept his head.
01:28He took pole position for the sprint
01:30and managed to convert it into a victory,
01:33despite the pressure from his younger teammate
01:36and also from Lando Norris later on in the race.
01:40But Kimmy Antonelli did feel aggrieved.
01:43He'd apparently been pushed off at the time.
01:45He demonstrated that over team radio,
01:47but in the end, he had to settle for third.
01:51No penalty, no further action.
01:53And it means that Russell has closed the gap
01:54of his teammates to 18 points.
01:56It was 20 points at the start of the weekend.
01:59That's where we are on the Ile-Notre-Dame
02:01at the circuit Gilles Villeneuve
02:03and just under an hour to go
02:04until the start of qualifying for the main race tonight.
02:10Evening, all.
02:11Good afternoon from here in Montreal.
02:13Well, the title race, I know it's early days,
02:16but it just went up a notch, you feel,
02:18after what happened in that sprint.
02:20We're going to hear from Toto off a little bit later,
02:22but this was the incident at Turn 1.
02:25Martin Brundle, Jamie Chadwick alongside me.
02:27Martin, we liked that, didn't we?
02:30Good racing.
02:32This is the moment down into the first corner.
02:35I mean, momentarily, a few frames,
02:37you could say that Antonelli was ahead,
02:39but the regulators also say that
02:41you can't be expected to just disappear
02:44on the inside of a corner.
02:46It was touch and go.
02:48And I, you know, Toto later confirmed to us
02:52that had it have been a different team on the inside,
02:54he would have asked the students to have a look at it,
02:56of course.
02:57But it was inter-team.
02:59And it was getting feisty, and it will do.
03:01It will continue to do so,
03:02because George has to re-establish himself,
03:05and Kimi absolutely does not want to lose
03:07this momentum he's had recently.
03:08We're going to have a look at it in the Skypad
03:10in a few moments' time.
03:11Actually, we just talked to Gary Connolly,
03:13one of the stewards, who was telling us
03:15that actually it's to do with having your front axle
03:18at least in front of, actually, at the apex.
03:21And I think Kimi was ahead at one stage,
03:23but it was prior to the apex.
03:24That was the feeling, I think, up in the stewards' room.
03:27But it was marginal, right?
03:28And it was the right decision.
03:30It's always marginal.
03:30I don't...
03:31Yeah, it wasn't under investigation either.
03:33But, I mean, it's close racing,
03:35and that's what we want to see.
03:36The inter-team battle's the bit
03:38that I think we find more interesting.
03:39I think if that was with two other cars,
03:41I don't think we'd obviously be as interested in it.
03:44But that's the first time we've seen them
03:45properly wheel-to-wheel,
03:46and the first time we've seen Kimi aggravated by George.
03:49So I think, in that sense,
03:50it was a critical moment for the championship,
03:53critical for George to make sure he's got his elbows out.
03:55Because if he let Kimi drive around the outside of him,
03:57I don't think that would have boded well
03:59for the rest of the year.
04:00The problem with that regulation is,
04:02where exactly is the apex of any given corner around the world?
04:05Like Turn 1 in Sao Paulo for Interlagos, for example.
04:09And it depends which line you're coming in from
04:11as to exactly where the apex is.
04:13So you've got this flawed reference point, in a way.
04:16And, of course, if you're all on the outside of the track,
04:18you know, which angle does that line go from the apex?
04:22So it is a guideline.
04:25That's all it can be.
04:26I should imagine there's a few of you at home.
04:28Maybe you're relaxing on your sofa sunburnt,
04:31because I know it's pretty hot back in the UK at the moment.
04:33In case you missed what happened at the sprint,
04:35let's use all the tools that are available to us at our disposal.
04:39And go to Karuna, who's at the skypad, and have another look.
04:44Thank you, Simon.
04:44Let's show the off-board angle first.
04:46Just to remind everybody of how this unfolds.
04:49So Russell had Antonelli in the slipstream,
04:51on the run down to Term 1.
04:53Kimmy went for the outside line.
04:55And George, watch him there.
04:56He just gets on the kerb.
04:57Watch the car bounce and bob around a little bit.
04:59So he runs a little bit wide from that kerb.
05:03He sort of takes the normal line that he would take,
05:06as if the other Mercedes was not there.
05:09Now, of course, the other Mercedes was there.
05:11So let's go look at it from on-board.
05:13Now, earlier when we looked at it, we didn't have Russell's on-board.
05:15We managed to dig it out of his car.
05:17So this is the first look at it from both drivers.
05:21Russell on the left, Antonelli on the right.
05:23So heading to Term 1, you can see the lights flashing there.
05:25Russell recovering energy.
05:27Kimmy throws it around the outside.
05:28Now, this is the racing line.
05:30You can see the dark rubber.
05:31That's the part which has been cleaned up.
05:33There's lots of rubber, lots of grip here.
05:36Russell, see there?
05:38The lighter gray part.
05:39He's on the dirty side.
05:41So inevitably, he has to brake earlier.
05:43It's a tighter radius.
05:43He's slowing down more.
05:45Kimmy throws it around the outside.
05:47Now, at this point, you could look at it and say they are alongside.
05:53And as you guys just talked about, the driving standard guidelines,
05:56it says that the car on the outside needs to have the front axle in front of the car on
06:03the inside.
06:04And at that point, he is not.
06:06And you can go, and we can go back and forth.
06:08And he is not.
06:09So as we get to the apex, and notwithstanding what Martin has just said, the stewards look at it as
06:15the midpoint of the corner.
06:16So let's, for argument's sake, say that is the apex.
06:19Draw a line across it.
06:21And you'd say, George is in front there.
06:24So at that point, they basically said, and the stewards have decided, they don't need to look at it because
06:29it's now, it's just a pure racing battle.
06:32This is where they need to sort it out on track.
06:35Now, to me, this is interesting.
06:38As you go back to George's steering angle, let's play it in slow-mo.
06:42Oh, it didn't play it slow.
06:43Let's go back and see why that didn't play in slow.
06:46He does open the wheel a little bit.
06:49And I think that's where Kimmy's sort of frustration.
06:51Look, he's turning, turning, turning.
06:53And there, he's opened the wheel.
06:54So we'll go back and show it.
06:57We'll go back at four.
06:58And you see he's turning, turning, turning.
07:00And he's opened the wheel there.
07:01And I think it's sort of coincided with him coming off that curb that I showed earlier, sort of bounced
07:04off.
07:05He's opened the wheel.
07:06And at that point, this is where we're coming close to the contact with Kimmy.
07:10And I think that's why Kimmy was a bit annoyed because he thought he was pushed out.
07:15But the reality is, if you're leading the race, you're not going to let a driver just go around the
07:21outside of you at turn one.
07:23Russell was never going to give up that space.
07:25It is generally viewed that an overtaking maneuver on the outside is a higher risk.
07:29You're putting yourself in that position of race.
07:31I think they did the right thing not to penalize anybody.
07:34And it's just great fun to see these two drivers going at it.
07:37The battle carried on.
07:38I'll just quickly show you.
07:39It carried on to turn eight, nine.
07:42And we'll go on board with Antonelli here.
07:45Watch as he gets onto the bump.
07:46Watch his hands.
07:47There.
07:47Snapper oversteer.
07:48The car bottoms out.
07:49He's then on the dirty part of the track.
07:51The car's bouncing.
07:52He locks up.
07:53And he then went straight across the grass doing a bit of lawn mowing.
07:56So, yeah, at that point, I was purely born out of the frustration of what happened at turn one.
08:02So, yeah, that's what I've got for you, Simon.
08:05I mean, all these little moments matter.
08:08Lando Norris won the world championship last year by two points.
08:11Yeah.
08:12And, you know, a change around is two points.
08:14So, I don't think it's a penalty.
08:17I don't think there's anything to look at.
08:18It was touch and go.
08:20George was probably a little bit ruder coming into the last chicane, actually, where he squeezed him a little bit.
08:25But I think it was all good, hard, fair racing.
08:28And Kimi Antonelli's saying, okay, well, if that's how we go racing, let's go racing like that.
08:33Completely agree.
08:34I think it's hard racing.
08:35And, yeah, I think the interesting thing there is that, well, I would have been interested just to see the
08:40difference between when Kimi went for the move on Lando later in the race,
08:43how much later he breaks, how much more speed he tried to carry around the outside to make that move
08:47stick in comparison to George.
08:50I think he was further back.
08:51But maybe if you could go through it in slow-mo, it would be interesting to see the difference between
08:55the two laps.
08:56Because in this instance, it's like he really needed to commit to it and overshot it completely.
09:01Well, you asked, and I can deliver.
09:03Here is Kimi Antonelli versus Lando Norris.
09:05He's going around the outside.
09:07He's definitely come at it at a much higher speed.
09:10He's definitely got an overspeed here.
09:12And there was no way he was going to make the corner.
09:15So to answer your question, Jamie, I think in the battle against George, I think Kimi could have kept it
09:21within track limits.
09:22It could have stayed within the track.
09:24With the battle with Lando, he was just going way too fast and he would never have made the corner.
09:28I want to come back.
09:28In commentary, I think your line was something along the lines of, OK, it's just changed.
09:34The battle has just changed as a result of this.
09:36Yeah, yeah, yeah.
09:38We were there.
09:38We watched it, didn't we?
09:39Because that's going to be the story now between those two.
09:42They look like they've got a car that can win.
09:44I don't think it's dominant anymore.
09:46But those two have got the best chance of the world championship.
09:49And that is.
09:50And we saw the friction start.
09:52And as I said to Toto at the end of our interview, to be continued.
09:56Yeah, exactly.
09:57We're going to hear from Toto very, very shortly.
10:00But first of all, that was just one incident or a couple of incidents.
10:03Here's what happened in the rest of the sprint.
10:07Welcome along to Montreal.
10:08And for the first time ever here at the circuit, Gilles Villeneuve, we've got a sprint race.
10:13Lights out, away we go.
10:14And Russell does get away well.
10:17Antonelli may be a little bit slower, but he's covered off Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.
10:21And under pressure there, the McLaren with Lewis Hamilton going around the outside of Piastri.
10:25And now trying to get on terms with Norris.
10:27Every point is going to matter in this world championship.
10:32Antonelli is not going to make it easy for Russell.
10:36Into the first corner we go.
10:38And on the inside, Antonelli gets ahead and goes off the track.
10:42George Russell manages to keep that lead.
10:45Don't worry, not me.
10:47Off again, Antonelli.
10:49And that one was an awful lot worse and a lot bumpier.
10:52And that's going to slow him down.
10:53And he's going to lose a place to Lando Norris.
10:56And the skirmish is going on.
10:57And that has really affected Kimi Antonelli's race.
11:00Let's just get his back up control, Kimi.
11:03Focus on Norris.
11:04Yeah, it's not fair.
11:05It could be up.
11:06Can you concentrate on the driving, please, and not on the radio morning?
11:09An awful lot going on here in this race.
11:13Oh, and that was Lewis Hamilton getting very, very close to the Wall of Champions.
11:20Mando Norris is still keeping within a few car lengths of George Russell.
11:26Russell's hanging on to the lead here.
11:28Russell, Norris, Antonelli separated by roundabout a second.
11:33Can Russell hang on?
11:35Antonelli makes the move, but overshoots the corner.
11:38He'll have to give the place back.
11:43George Russell crosses the line, reaches the flag and wins.
11:46Wow, has he had a race here.
11:49Lando Norris ahead of Kimi Antonelli to take second place with Antonelli third.
11:53And then Piastri to the line, under pressure from Charles Leclerc.
11:58And just a car length in it, as he takes fourth ahead of Leclerc in fifth and Hamilton in sixth.
12:03Oscar Piastri, Lewis falling down later on, as we just saw Charles Leclerc ahead of him as well.
12:09Max Verstappen and Arvid Lindblad making up the rest of the points.
12:16Remember, it's eighth for first and one for eighth, moving down, tapering down like that.
12:21So what it means is that, George, it was 20 points at the start of the weekend.
12:24That gap now closed to 18 as we head towards qualifying.
12:28Charles Leclerc now five clear of Lando Norris, who in turn is four clear of Lewis Hamilton.
12:34Six clear of Oscar Piastri.
12:36Lehmann Gasly and Lawson tucked in behind Max Verstappen.
12:41Further down, that was actually Arvid Lindblad's first points since Australia.
12:46And he's moved himself up to 12th, just in behind Franco Colabinto had a decent Miami showing.
12:53So in the constructors, Mercedes, 77 clear of Ferrari, 11 clear of McLaren, 74 clear of Red Bull.
13:01And then it moves down from there to Alpine Haas and Racing Bulls.
13:05Now, Formula One hasn't seen a teenage sensation since Max Verstappen.
13:10Here is Ted on the latest superstar, the youngest ever championship leader, Kimi Antonelli.
13:18Formula One hasn't seen a teenage sensation like this since Max Verstappen.
13:23At the age of 19 years and nine months, Mercedes' Andrea Kimi Antonelli from Ferrari's hometown of Bologna, Italy,
13:30comes to Canada in the form of his one-and-a-half-year-old F1 career.
13:35To put his recent achievements into context, Kimi's first three Grand Prix pole positions
13:39were converted into his first three Grand Prix wins.
13:43The last two drivers who tried to do that but could not were Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna.
13:48But how was he able to do that so young?
13:50Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton won his first Grand Prix here in Canada at the age of 22.
13:55And his teammate Charles Leclerc won his first race at 21.
13:59So is it easier for kids these days?
14:02No.
14:03No, no, no, no.
14:04It's not easier in any way.
14:06The good thing about being kind of young and in the first years in Formula One
14:10is that you tend to not overthink and you just go with it and go flat out.
14:14And that's...
14:15Definitely see that as a characteristic of Kimi.
14:19Antonelli's rookie season last year started positively
14:22and he struggled with a long mid-season dip just after his home race in Imola
14:25with costly spins and crashes.
14:27Yeah, I'm sorry.
14:29So just how has he managed to achieve and maintain this current great form?
14:33Going through the difficult moments last year helped me to...
14:37made me a lot stronger ahead of this year.
14:39And I feel more in control of the situation,
14:41also more aware of what's good and what's not good for me.
14:44And so far it's going pretty well.
14:47But when you're trying to gauge just how great Kimi is
14:50and how great he could become,
14:52it's sometimes useful to ask his peers on the grid.
14:55Kimi is extremely talented.
14:57He's delivering an incredible start-up season,
14:59you know, winning three races in a row.
15:01I'm happy for him because he shows the talent, you know,
15:04that our generation has.
15:05You were born in 2006, right?
15:07This is ridiculous.
15:10Seeing talented young people who truly deserve it to get to the top,
15:14it's really awesome, so congratulations, mate.
15:16First of all, I take all the credit, of course, for his success.
15:20You know, I think it's just a fact.
15:23No, I mean, he's grown a lot in a short period of time.
15:27The latest advice I gave him end of last year
15:29is just keep doing what you're doing.
15:31I'm really, really proud of him.
15:33But is it all too early?
15:35Is Kimi Antonelli too young, too inexperienced?
15:38Is it too much to ask that he can challenge for a world championship
15:41consistently throughout the season?
15:44The goal this weekend is to pick up from where we left off in Miami
15:48and just continue this good streak.
15:50You never know, but I think, you know,
15:53it's not impossible to maintain this form for the whole year.
15:56Antonelli and, for that matter, Sprint Pulser to George Russell
15:59are helped by eight upgrades from Mercedes this weekend,
16:02significantly to the front wing and the rear diffuser.
16:05The Mercedes upgrades are clearly working this weekend,
16:08but it's the real secret to Kimi's success,
16:10the relationship he has with Peter Bono-Bonington,
16:13the man who stands there and who, let's not forget,
16:16won six world championships at this very Mercedes team
16:19with Lewis Hamilton.
16:21I've got the experience.
16:22He's got the youth.
16:23Yeah, it's great.
16:24For him, he's like, he went from Lewis Hamilton to a kid.
16:28We're enjoying a lot our time together.
16:31We're working very well.
16:32We look forward to, you know, keep raising that bar
16:34and keep rocking.
16:36So where does all this leave George Russell?
16:38While Kimi was benefiting from the Mercedes
16:40being the quickest car in China, Japan and Miami,
16:44now McLaren are back in the picture
16:46and George has got a deal with Oscar.
16:49It's just another race for me.
16:51I know what I'm capable of.
16:52I know the speed I've got.
16:54Obviously, Miami was a bad weekend.
16:56It was a tough weekend for me there last year
16:59and I went to Montreal and had a great weekend.
17:01At this point, it means nothing.
17:04Russell's self-confidence seems well-founded.
17:06His sprint race pole and spirited defence
17:08of Antonelli's moves earlier today
17:10demonstrated to everyone, most importantly Kimi,
17:13that George is still ready to fight, alive and kicking.
17:17Antonelli has the capacity to be a Verstappen-level great of F1.
17:22Every battle, off-track excursion and place won or lost,
17:26just another lesson along the way.
17:29Thank you, everyone.
17:30Thank you so much.
17:35Well, it's been a brilliant 2026 so far for Kimi Antonelli,
17:39but Toto Wolff, that was as feisty as we've seen him so far.
17:43What were your thoughts now?
17:45You've reviewed it and tell me how that debrief was.
17:48Yeah, I mean, that was good, like sport should be,
17:51or intra-team battle or outside.
17:54And for us, it's good learning.
17:57You know, we obviously went through these motions with Nico and Luis
18:00and sprint race is always a possibility to then recalibrate or recondition.
18:07And it was very easy because we set them down and said,
18:11how do we want to race?
18:13Are you racing the other car like any third car,
18:16which I'm fine?
18:18And then, obviously, you don't leave the space here.
18:21Or do you want to leave the space,
18:22which I would not expect because fundamentally,
18:25you're racing for winning and winning a championship.
18:27Or are we playing this super smooth sailing
18:29and you're only overtaking shot on the straight or on the breaking?
18:32And we agreed that we trust them.
18:35They know how to push.
18:38But in any case, no one of either two
18:41is expecting the other one to leave space
18:43because it's too important.
18:45If, say, it had been Lando on the inside of Kimi,
18:48would you have protested to race control for unfair driving?
18:52Well, we would have called, yes.
18:53We would have called and said,
18:55have a look at the situation, yeah, definitely.
18:57You didn't, obviously, you...
18:58We don't want to protest each other's car out,
19:00but, yeah, I would have.
19:02What did you say to him, though?
19:04I mean, it was quite interesting.
19:05You interjected over T-Radio because he was saying,
19:08he pushed me off, I don't care.
19:09And he said, not now.
19:10We do this off.
19:11So what do you say to him when you go behind closed doors?
19:14Please give us a window into a deep...
19:15Yeah, but it's also an easy one.
19:17I said with the two of them, it's valid for George
19:19and it was equally valid for Lewis back in the day.
19:22When Lewis went on a rant, I stopped it.
19:25I remember in Austria, I said, just drive the car.
19:27Stop complaining.
19:30And particularly here, you know, say it once,
19:34vent it, we're the bin for your emotions.
19:36So that's okay.
19:37Don't be rude, don't insult,
19:38but don't keep going on on this
19:40because then you're wasting my time
19:41because all the interviews I need to do
19:43is about whether we have a Star Wars here
19:45or whether the rivalry is getting out of control.
19:48So, yeah, feel for our emotions.
19:51We don't expect a puppy in the car.
19:52We want a lion in the car.
19:55But we've heard it when it's said once.
19:57It's clear what's going to happen now.
19:59They both want to establish themselves
20:01as the main man in the team.
20:03George had to.
20:05Kimi has made it clear,
20:06okay, well, that's how we're racing then.
20:08I'll show you.
20:09He's going to come back with some crazy move, isn't he?
20:11Yeah, absolutely.
20:12I don't think...
20:13But I don't think it's going to...
20:14I hope so.
20:15I'm talking clever here tomorrow.
20:17I have to apologize.
20:18But I don't think there's going to be
20:20any launching into the other car,
20:24anything that would put the two cars
20:26at risk.
20:28I think that we made clear.
20:30Obviously, with you guys,
20:32once the visor comes down,
20:34it becomes a different story.
20:35But I would expect them
20:36to race each other hard.
20:39But clean.
20:40Harbour clean.
20:41But do you think that the second incident
20:42was a result of the frustration
20:43from the first from Kimi today
20:45with the launch down the inside?
20:46What was for you the first incident?
20:48Well, I mean, it wasn't
20:49because it was a penalty.
20:50But clearly he was frustrated, Kimi,
20:52by the one that we've just talked about
20:54at turn one.
20:55And then the one down at turn eight was...
20:57I think it started earlier.
20:59I think it started on the straight,
21:00breaking into the last chicane.
21:02Okay.
21:03Where they didn't...
21:04Where George didn't leave...
21:05leave a lot of space.
21:07Now, I think it's good to know the rules.
21:09Would Max have left space there?
21:11No.
21:11Would Max have opened the door
21:13or left another space in turn one?
21:17He wouldn't.
21:17So how do we want to do this
21:18between teammates?
21:19And I think it's important
21:20for them to decide
21:21how they want to race each other.
21:22And then I'm...
21:23We are fine.
21:24We did the outcome.
21:25Is that today?
21:26You said they've got to decide.
21:28It's got to happen
21:29in the next few hours, yes?
21:31No.
21:31That's the rules now.
21:33And it's...
21:34It's a framework
21:36that they have established
21:39amongst themselves.
21:39And we are happy.
21:41Okay.
21:42But, effectively,
21:43that contact gave a point
21:44to McLaren, didn't it?
21:45Does that annoy you?
21:47If it was a Grand Prix, yes.
21:49And it's something we elaborated also.
21:51It's, you know,
21:53you're fighting each other so hard.
21:55Norris overtakes.
21:56Norris could have well taken the win
21:58if it was a longer race like tomorrow.
22:01So how do we handle the situation now?
22:03If we get off the start,
22:04we're behind each other.
22:05And if we're lucky enough
22:06to be in the lead,
22:07which we don't know.
22:08And probably we would extend it
22:10a little bit before
22:11being at each other's throats.
22:12And the start problems?
22:14Gone?
22:14Finished?
22:15Sorted?
22:15Knock on wood.
22:17George's was perfect.
22:19Kimi's,
22:19which is down to the car.
22:21It has nothing to do
22:22with the driver fault.
22:23It wasn't great,
22:24but he kept the position.
22:25You said you sat down
22:26and you've talked about
22:27the rules of engagement.
22:28Does that mean
22:28you're going to have,
22:29like,
22:30the Mercedes version
22:31of Papaya rules?
22:32Is that something
22:33that is written?
22:33We like to eat fruits,
22:35but we're not
22:36into fruit rules.
22:38But the thing
22:39is a little job.
22:40Zach, hi.
22:41Good job.
22:42You know,
22:43you're taking the pit there,
22:44aren't you?
22:44That's what you're doing.
22:45No, no, no, no.
22:47Boom, boom.
22:48Boom, boom.
22:48That's good.
22:50We, you know,
22:51we are the key inventors
22:52of the rules of engagement.
22:54That was something
22:55that we had in Mercedes.
22:56We changed it then
22:58because rules for drivers
22:59that are free souls,
23:01you know,
23:01rules doesn't sound right.
23:02So we called it
23:03racing intent.
23:05Yeah.
23:06But fundamentally
23:07is what others call
23:10Papaya rules.
23:11With us,
23:11we have a different word for it.
23:13To be continued,
23:14we're going to have
23:14this conversation again
23:15this year.
23:16Quite a lot of times.
23:17I'm 100% sure
23:17that I'm going to look
23:18like a fool
23:19a few times this year,
23:20but it's okay.
23:21As you said,
23:22you just can't get
23:23to Rosberg-Hamilton levels,
23:25can you?
23:25I'm sure you'll have
23:26things in place for that.
23:26Thank you, Toto.
23:28Appreciate it.
23:29Right.
23:30We're going to take
23:30a short break.
23:32The atmosphere
23:32is building
23:33ahead of qualifying
23:35here for the main race.
23:36We've already had
23:37a juicy afternoon
23:38on track.
23:39Fans at every vantage point
23:41are looking ahead to that.
23:50Welcome back.
23:51Cars firing up
23:51in the pit lane
23:52with just over 20 minutes
23:54to go until the start
23:55of qualifying
23:56for the Canadian Grand Prix.
23:58Now, as I mentioned
23:58before the break,
23:59Arvid Lindblad,
24:00decent performance,
24:01first point
24:01since his debut
24:03in his rookie season
24:04in Australia.
24:06And last night,
24:07he stopped by the Skypad
24:08to share his qualifying tips
24:09with Karim.
24:12Arvid,
24:13thanks for coming down
24:13to the Skypad.
24:14I'd love for you
24:15to be able to explain
24:16to people at home
24:17just about the outlap
24:18preparation
24:19before we get into your lap
24:20because it's really tricky
24:21for you guys
24:21to get the battery
24:22and the tires
24:22where you want it, right?
24:23Yeah, no,
24:24it's not been easy,
24:25especially this track.
24:26You know,
24:26it's energy poor,
24:28so it's not easy
24:29with the battery.
24:30It's low energy
24:30for the tires as well,
24:31so a lot of weaving
24:32on the outlap.
24:33Here, I had to slow down
24:34quite a lot
24:35because Lando
24:35was creating a gap
24:36in front.
24:37So just talk me
24:39through that.
24:40So when you have
24:40a car in front of you,
24:41you've got to be
24:42careful because when you
24:43brake,
24:44you've got to be careful
24:45and you're thinking
24:45about how much energy
24:46you put in?
24:47Yeah, so you have
24:47to be careful
24:48because, I mean,
24:48the biggest thing
24:49is you want to start
24:49the lap in a good position,
24:50so you want to be
24:51far back enough,
24:52but I want to be able
24:52to put energy
24:53into the tires like this.
24:54I don't want to be stopping.
24:55Big weaving here.
24:56Big weaving,
24:56but I also don't want
24:57to be too close
24:58and have to stop
24:58and start
24:59because that's
24:59spending energy.
25:00I just want to go once.
25:01So here, I've gone,
25:02then I broke,
25:02make sure brakes are in,
25:03tires are in,
25:04try to prep the lap,
25:05good exit out the last corner.
25:07And this is your final lap
25:08so you've come out of here.
25:10What are you looking
25:10at the dash?
25:11Are you looking
25:11at the battery
25:12or are you looking
25:12at tire temps?
25:13So at this point,
25:14I'm just hoping
25:14the battery's
25:15in the right window,
25:15so I'm not really
25:16focused on that now.
25:17Now all I'm focused
25:17on is the lap,
25:19just doing a double check
25:20that the switches
25:22were in the right place,
25:23but then making sure
25:24the SM is open
25:25and then looking
25:26ahead to turn one.
25:27Okay, so you're not
25:27getting any beeps
25:28or anything to tell you
25:29the battery's packed,
25:29you're just hoping
25:30that it's okay?
25:31I mean, I looked
25:31into the last corner
25:32and I knew it was
25:33in a good place,
25:33so I was sure
25:35it was fine, yeah.
25:36All right, now let's
25:37get into the lap itself.
25:38Coming to turn one,
25:38not easy here
25:39with the bump
25:39under braking,
25:40but was able to
25:41obviously get the line
25:42right, just clip the curb.
25:44Here we've been
25:45struggling a bit
25:45with some of the
25:46engine braking,
25:47so you can see
25:47it's a bit nervous,
25:49the car,
25:49but then, yeah,
25:50was able to get
25:50some nice traction
25:51out of there.
25:52I struggled to get
25:53the switch actually
25:53in here,
25:54which was a bit annoying.
25:55I don't know if you...
25:55What does that mean,
25:55the switch?
25:56I don't think you actually
25:57see it,
25:57but if you go back
25:57slightly, I'm pressing
25:58on this button.
26:01Which hand am I
26:03on the right hand?
26:04Yeah, if you go back
26:05a bit earlier,
26:06because at this point
26:06I'm obviously braking.
26:07Okay, we'll keep going.
26:11I don't know
26:11what lap you've got up here.
26:13But anyway, fine.
26:14You've not remembered it.
26:15Yeah.
26:16I mean, no,
26:16I was definitely...
26:17Okay.
26:17Sorry, it was the other hand.
26:19That's why.
26:19So anyway,
26:19you don't see it,
26:20but anyway here,
26:20important to get the curb,
26:21landed there nicely,
26:23good commitment through four,
26:25then into here,
26:26trying to focus on the line,
26:27making sure to open up
26:28the track on entry
26:29up to the wall.
26:30Yeah, so talk to me
26:31about this one,
26:31because you see a lot of
26:32people sort of struggling
26:32with under-rotation,
26:33on the way you're in.
26:34Yeah, we've been okay there.
26:35Okay.
26:36You're really hooked up
26:37on the curb.
26:37Yeah, the curbs are so
26:38important here.
26:39We've had generally good ride,
26:40so just really focused
26:41on hooking the wheel there
26:42on the limit of the rear
26:43through here in seven.
26:44Now talk to us
26:45about the energy stuff,
26:46because obviously we've got,
26:47you know,
26:48changed the rules
26:48this weekend.
26:50Yeah.
26:50Was it easier to manage
26:51with the reduced megajoules?
26:53Yeah, there was less
26:54we were doing,
26:54more the car was sort of
26:55doing by itself,
26:56so you don't really see it,
26:57but there was a bit
26:58of a Super K clip
26:58into there.
26:59We'll have another
27:00Super K clip into here.
27:01But are you thinking
27:02about it less now?
27:03No. Well, yeah,
27:04I'm not thinking about it.
27:04I know the car's gonna do it.
27:05I can feel it when it happens,
27:07so it's always in the same place.
27:08I know my reference
27:09is for braking,
27:10and I can just do that
27:11the same every time.
27:11But that was the point
27:12of the rules, right?
27:13We want it to be more natural
27:14for you guys
27:15compared to Japan.
27:16And has that happened?
27:18Yeah, I'd say so.
27:19I mean, for us,
27:19to be honest,
27:19it was never as big a thing
27:21as the top teams,
27:21but for sure,
27:22I'm not thinking
27:23about it at all.
27:24So you've done the hairpin,
27:25talk to me about
27:25the final chicane now.
27:26Yeah.
27:27How much risk
27:27did you take on this lap?
27:29I mean,
27:29the lap before,
27:30I broke too late,
27:31so I wasn't focused
27:32on braking a bit earlier.
27:34I don't know.
27:34I double front-locked,
27:35which was not ideal.
27:37Let's just go back
27:37and show up,
27:39because...
27:39To be honest,
27:40I don't know how
27:40I made the corner,
27:41but yeah,
27:41I locked both fronts
27:43and immediately released
27:45the brake
27:46and tried to get in,
27:47and I still made
27:48the corner nicely.
27:50I mean,
27:50obviously,
27:50it's not the perfect position,
27:51but I mean,
27:52yeah,
27:52I'm a bit out of position,
27:53but yeah,
27:54I mean,
27:54I was just honest,
27:55I was just happy
27:55to still make the corner,
27:56and yeah,
27:57it was a bit annoying,
27:58because I lost
27:58a bit of time there,
27:59and I think,
28:00for sure,
28:00P8,
28:01maybe even P7
28:01was on the cards,
28:02but fine,
28:03it is what it is.
28:04I'll learn for it
28:04for tomorrow,
28:05but yeah,
28:06I think it was okay in general.
28:06Hey, listen,
28:07it's your first time here.
28:08You've literally done
28:08one day of driving around.
28:09You're in the top 10,
28:10lining up behind Max's step,
28:11and well done.
28:12Thank you.
28:13Well done.
28:13Thank you.
28:15Fast learner.
28:16Clearly,
28:17very fast learner.
28:18Actually,
28:18when Karun said that,
28:19one day of driving here,
28:20not even a day,
28:21just one session
28:22of driving here
28:23before going into qualifying,
28:24so incredible way of learning,
28:27and I think it just shows
28:27the level that the young
28:28drivers are at,
28:29and clearly the preparation
28:30that the teams can give them
28:31with the simulator work
28:32and what have you,
28:33and I think these new regulations,
28:34whilst seem complex,
28:36almost are a softer landing
28:37for some of these rookies,
28:38because everyone's learning
28:39them at the same time,
28:40and I think that gives them
28:42a bit more of an opportunity
28:43to get a bit closer
28:44to those that are
28:45a bit more experienced.
28:46Bernie,
28:47out of Park Furman,
28:48let's just look in behind us
28:49to McLaren and Dowage here.
28:50Are we going to see,
28:51do you think,
28:52a mixture of set-ups,
28:53some people leaning
28:54maybe towards
28:55damper conditions tomorrow
28:57and others focusing
28:58on their qualifying
28:59performance today?
29:00Yeah,
29:01I think so to fill in
29:02the people at home.
29:03It's a 70% risk of rain
29:04for tomorrow morning.
29:05It gets a little bit better
29:06as we go towards the race.
29:08If you could guarantee
29:09it was wet tomorrow,
29:10you'd put a lot more
29:11downforce on these cars
29:12to help with the load
29:14and the rain,
29:14to help with the grip
29:15of the tyres,
29:16if you could guarantee
29:17a totally wet race,
29:18but I think there's going
29:19to be some compromise
29:20you're going to have
29:21to give up a little bit
29:22of qualifying performance
29:23today in order to be
29:24a little bit more
29:25towards a wet set-up
29:26for tomorrow.
29:27You don't want to go
29:28all the way in case
29:29we get in tomorrow
29:30and it's miraculously
29:31no rain has arrived.
29:32So there will be
29:33compromises up and down
29:34the Pitley and I think
29:36for that qualifier,
29:37for the race set-up tomorrow.
29:38I'll come back to you,
29:39Bernie,
29:39so I just want to ask
29:40another one.
29:40If we learn anything
29:41from that sprint race,
29:44I mean,
29:44McLaren kind on their tyres,
29:45but perhaps they take
29:46a little bit longer
29:47to get in the groove,
29:49so to speak,
29:49which is why we saw
29:50them drop away
29:51and then when they were
29:51cured,
29:52come back at the Mercedes.
29:54I mean,
29:55is that a factor
29:55also in qualifying
29:56for them,
29:56do you think?
29:57Yeah,
29:58I think it's going
29:58to be very important.
29:59So I think what we learned
30:00is that the tyres
30:01are very sensitive
30:02to temperature.
30:03So the Mercedes
30:04were quite strong
30:05in the opening lap,
30:06and when they had
30:07their little battle
30:08and a few off-track
30:08excursions,
30:10temperature dropped,
30:11the tyres aren't
30:11in the window,
30:12they're very close
30:13in the McLaren.
30:14McLaren was much
30:14more stable
30:15through all of that
30:16phase,
30:16so I think the tyres
30:17are very sensitive
30:19and that is something
30:20that on outlaps,
30:21on warm-up laps,
30:22cool laps,
30:23through this qualifying
30:24session,
30:25teams and drivers
30:25are going to have
30:26to be on top of.
30:27And the encouragement
30:28I suppose that they'll
30:29take is that their
30:29race pace looked good,
30:32I mean,
30:32unless, of course,
30:33and you were thinking
30:34that George might
30:35have back-glue
30:37Lando up,
30:38but did you think
30:38that they're closer
30:39on Sundays
30:40than they are Saturdays?
30:41I think,
30:42yeah,
30:42they were managing
30:43the pace of the Mercedes,
30:44especially when George
30:45saw Kimi behind Lando,
30:47I think there was a bit
30:48of management going
30:49into that,
30:50but equally,
30:51I think if you take
30:51yesterday,
30:52it was only the last run
30:53when the big gap
30:54seemed to open up
30:55and I think anything
30:56can happen in this
30:56qualifying session
30:57and for me,
30:58if McLaren can get
30:59everything right,
31:00there's no reason
31:00why they can't
31:01challenge Mercedes.
31:02Right,
31:03Ted,
31:03what have you got
31:04for us?
31:05And where are you?
31:06Hello, Simon,
31:07I'm here outside
31:08the Ferrari garage
31:08just down the road
31:09from you,
31:09but let's have a look,
31:10shall we?
31:10Let's do rear wing-o-meter
31:12and see who might
31:13have chosen
31:14somewhat of a wet setup
31:15because it's looking
31:16like it's 95%
31:17going to be wet.
31:18Actually,
31:19Lewis Hamilton
31:19hasn't changed his car
31:20very much at all,
31:21so he seems happy
31:22with it despite his
31:23tyres going off
31:24in the sprint race.
31:25He would have done
31:25a bit on that,
31:26but he was essentially
31:28happy with the car.
31:28Not so Charles Leclerc.
31:30He's just finished
31:31some quite significant
31:33changes on there
31:34as Ferrari goes.
31:35That's why you're seeing
31:36all the people
31:36around Leclerc's car
31:37and not McLaren.
31:39So I've had,
31:40not Hamilton.
31:41I've had a look
31:42at McLaren.
31:42They seem to be
31:43doing a few tweaks.
31:44The Mercedes
31:45seems to be
31:46about the same car
31:47as they went
31:48into sprint qualifying,
31:49but take a look.
31:50This leaves us
31:51at Red Bull.
31:51What's going on
31:52at Red Bull?
31:53Well,
31:53they know
31:54that they can't compete
31:55with McLaren
31:56and Mercedes
31:56around this track.
31:57They've tried everything.
31:59They have turned
31:59the car upside down,
32:00but have a look
32:01at that rear wing
32:01on Hadjar's car
32:03and if we have
32:04a look on Max
32:05Verstappen's car.
32:06And I'm eyeballing
32:07this, Simon,
32:08and I think that McLaren
32:09have done exactly
32:10what Bernie Collins
32:11suggested.
32:12They've done it, Bernie,
32:13and they've put
32:14a bit of a wet setup
32:15on.
32:15Nothing drastic.
32:16And bear in mind
32:17that Red Bull
32:18do have this
32:18super-duper DRS
32:20movable rear wing
32:21that opens up
32:22so big you can fit
32:23a papaya through it,
32:24and that's helping
32:25them dump the drag.
32:26So while they're not
32:27having the penalty
32:28of running
32:29a large amount
32:30of rear wing
32:31in the straights
32:32because of this
32:32new active aero
32:33this year,
32:34I'm absolutely sure
32:35that Red Bull
32:36have put a bit
32:37more downforce on
32:37because if they
32:38can't beat the
32:39McLarens or the
32:40Mercedes at their
32:40own game in the
32:41dry, they're going
32:42to give it a go
32:43in the wet tomorrow.
32:44So let's see
32:45how that affects
32:47the car during
32:48qualifying.
32:49Might slow them
32:49down, but Max
32:50Verstappen's been
32:50solidly P7 anyway.
32:53An enchanting,
32:53yeah, a really
32:54enticing qualifying
32:56session to come.
32:57Back to you.
32:59Or enchanting,
32:59whichever word
33:00you'd prefer.
33:02Kimi, yeah,
33:03there he is,
33:03Kimi.
33:04He's got it.
33:04Was that like,
33:05you know,
33:05you go through
33:06what he went
33:08through in there,
33:08he was, you know,
33:09again, just,
33:10clearly emotions
33:11were running high.
33:12Right?
33:14How difficult
33:15to pull yourself
33:15down from it.
33:17He's, I mean,
33:17maybe I'm,
33:18you all right there,
33:19Bernie?
33:20Yeah, I'm sorry,
33:20I was just trying
33:21to look at the
33:21qualifying time.
33:22That's fine.
33:22Okay, good.
33:23Just, yeah,
33:24quickly on Kimi,
33:25it didn't really
33:26take him too long
33:27to calm himself
33:27back down,
33:28did it,
33:28from there.
33:29You can see
33:30in the pen interviews,
33:31he's, I just take it,
33:32right, fair enough,
33:33it was just a
33:34heat and moment thing.
33:34Yeah, he did a very
33:35good job to compose
33:36himself when he got
33:37out the car.
33:37I would be interested
33:39to know what he was
33:39like in the debrief
33:40with his engineers.
33:42But equally,
33:43I think this is now
33:43good motivation for him.
33:45He's got an opportunity
33:46now to go out
33:47and qualify,
33:47and he knows he's
33:48been fast,
33:48he knows he had
33:49good pace in that race,
33:50so he needs to use
33:51that hunger as motivation
33:52and, yeah,
33:53have the best
33:54qualifying session
33:54that he can ever have.
33:56I think he's making
33:57a statement.
33:58Do you?
33:59I think he wants
34:00to use this weekend
34:01to try, I mean,
34:02as I said,
34:02it's about being
34:03top dog there,
34:04and George wants
34:05to wrestle back
34:06that momentum.
34:07Both drivers
34:07were trying to make
34:08a statement,
34:08I think,
34:09in that last sprint
34:10session.
34:11George, like Jamie
34:11alluded to quite strongly,
34:13trying to make it
34:14clear to Kimi
34:15that he's not just
34:16going to drive
34:16around the outside,
34:17he's not going
34:17to allow that happen,
34:18and I think he's
34:20putting his intention
34:20very straight on.
34:22Equally,
34:23Kimi is saying,
34:24if I see an opportunity,
34:25I am going to go for it,
34:27and I am not afraid
34:28of the risk of contact
34:30or being pushed off track.
34:31It's a quite strong
34:32statement, I think,
34:33for both of them,
34:34able to take that risk
34:35in the sprint
34:36when there's not
34:36so many points
34:37on the board.
34:37And I think that's
34:38this momentum swing
34:39you see.
34:40Kimi's won the last
34:41few races,
34:41and he feels entitled
34:42to be able to go
34:43and overtake someone
34:44like George
34:44around the outside.
34:45I don't think
34:46we would have seen
34:46Kimi try that move
34:47earlier in the season,
34:49so he's already
34:49gained a lot of confidence,
34:51and George needs
34:51to shut that down
34:52as quick as he can,
34:53but now there's
34:54definitely going to be
34:54a difficult decision
34:56now where they're
34:57both going to be
34:58wanting to go for it,
34:59and they're both
34:59going to feel
35:00like the gloves are off.
35:01Let's just head down
35:01to Ferrari.
35:02We know that Lewis
35:03Hamilton, equal
35:04with Michael Schumacher,
35:05is the most successful
35:06driver around this track.
35:08He's had moments
35:10this weekend
35:10where he's been quick.
35:11He got a bit
35:12stuffed late on,
35:13didn't he,
35:13really, if that's
35:14the right word,
35:14in sprint qualifying
35:16because he looked
35:17really good,
35:18and then it's the same
35:19in the sprint itself,
35:20but there's clearly
35:21some pace in that car,
35:22and he's felt happier
35:22this weekend.
35:23Yeah, it's been
35:24really, really strong,
35:25particularly at the
35:25beginning of the lap.
35:26That Ferrari's been
35:27strong.
35:27When you look at the
35:28sort of compare
35:29across cars,
35:30in all of the corners
35:31the Ferrari's gaining,
35:32which is an indication
35:33that the chassis
35:34of the Ferrari
35:35is very good,
35:36potentially lacking
35:37a bit in engine,
35:38which straight-line speed
35:39here is very important,
35:39but I think,
35:40Lewis,
35:41they can learn
35:41from maybe some
35:42of the,
35:43when they ran the car
35:44in sprint quality,
35:45could it have been
35:45a bit later,
35:46would they have got
35:46more out of that
35:47soft tyre right at the end?
35:48Do you think we're
35:49going to see any changes
35:50from sprint qualifying?
35:51I mean,
35:51obviously,
35:52there's still going to be
35:52favourites to Mercedes,
35:54but the likes of Red Bull
35:56in the past,
35:57and even the Clarence,
35:58have been able to adapt
35:59to what they've seen
36:00and then change
36:01their setups accordingly?
36:02Definitely,
36:03I think Red Bull
36:03are throwing the kitchen
36:04sink at it,
36:05Ferrari,
36:05I think some minor changes,
36:07but yeah,
36:07they're going to have
36:08to try something
36:08to take anything
36:10to McLaren and Mercedes.
36:11And your pole sitter
36:12will be?
36:14I'm going to go for George,
36:15he's going to have
36:16been buoyed by that.
36:17I think Kimi
36:18could have him,
36:19you know.
36:20Okay,
36:21they've split it.
36:22Who knows,
36:23who will that sprint
36:25have affected more
36:26in the Mercedes garage,
36:27and can anybody else
36:29play the catch-up
36:30they need
36:31in qualifying
36:31for the Canadian Grand Prix.
36:33That's next.
36:41Welcome to Canada
36:43and a Montreal institution.
36:445 p.m.,
36:4610 people.
36:47We've been feeding the city
36:48for almost 100 years.
36:50Longer than the race
36:51has been here.
36:52You've got to come here
36:53and try it.
36:57So many memories here.
36:58He's rewriting
36:59what is possible
37:00in Formula One.
37:02And here we got
37:03our own wall of champions.
37:08Couldn't come to Montreal
37:09without trying
37:09Swartz's for the name.
37:10This is my first time
37:11having this sandwich,
37:12and I love it.
37:13What we do here
37:14is classic.
37:15Good for the soul.
37:17Flavor and tradition
37:18wrapped up in love.
37:21Food is so good,
37:22and even F1 drivers
37:24need hair.
37:27This place
37:28is a cut above the rest.
37:31Mouthwatering.
37:32Oh, not bad, huh?
37:33Sometimes the heat
37:34doesn't stay in the kitchen.
37:36It's cheap to show me.
37:37To succeed,
37:39it's all about consistency.
37:40Building some momentum
37:41for teenagers, isn't it?
37:43Good things come
37:44to those that wait.
37:46Married it for 10 days,
37:48but gone in seconds.
37:50Nice work, Jimmy.
37:51That's a pole position, mate.
37:52Can I do three in a row?
37:54That'll take something special.
37:55Pole position
37:56for the third Grand Prix
37:58in a row.
37:59I can do five in a row.
38:00100%.
38:01Let's go, man.
38:02Woo!
38:03Tastes like Montreal.
38:04Bon appétit, mes amis.
38:05orders.
38:33I can do F1 drivers
39:00Продолжение следует...
39:06So, fittingly then, for the city with the highest number of restaurants per capita in North America, we've had the
39:12starters.
39:13It's time for the main course, and who's going to sit at the head of the table for what will
39:17be the 55th World Championship Canadian Grand Prix?
39:20Welcome along to Round 5, and we're here in Montreal racing for the 45th time in Grand Prix history around
39:28the Circuit Shield Villeneuve.
39:2970 laps to come in tomorrow's Grand Prix. We've had the sprints, George Russell taking the honours, but who can
39:37excel around this track and navigate the 14 corners, 6 to the left and 8 to the right to claim
39:43pole position,
39:44and then maybe go on and win the Grand Prix, as has been done from pole for every race so
39:49far this season.
39:50C5 is the soft tyre, holding up well, not degrading very much. C4 is the medium, C3 is the hard.
39:56They should all be qualifying on that soft tyre.
39:59Unlike George Russell, who got pole last year here in Canada on a softer, soft compound, and decided to go
40:05for the medium to set his best time.
40:07He's been on pole, Martin Brundle, for the last two Grand Prix here. It's been very close between himself and
40:12Max Verstappen.
40:12He might have a different opponent today on the other side of his garage.
40:16A lot of cars fast out there, and today's a qualifying show. Tomorrow's about ponchos, I imagine, and that will
40:23affect how they set their cars up.
40:26You don't do today what we used to do back in the past, soften the suspension, make it more supple,
40:31the anti-roll bars, or what have you.
40:33That's pretty much fixed these days. Of course, they can put some more aerodynamic load into the carpet, more downforce,
40:40and they've got some devices on the steering wheel, but it is into the great unknown, as it's fully expected
40:47to be wet tomorrow.
40:48We've heard that before, but with the intermediates all the wet, so I think they'll turn their cars a little
40:54bit towards a wet setup,
40:58but grid position is still everything, especially if you get, like, safety car starts and restarts,
41:03and you want to be out front for visibility, but Ted's down in the pit lane, and I'm sure he's
41:08got more.
41:09Well, you wouldn't have thought, Martin, that they are missing the track after doing a 23-lap, half-an-hour
41:15Grand Prix.
41:16Well, little Grand Prix. It's not even a Grand Prix. It's a sprint race earlier on, let's be frank about
41:19it.
41:20But they're all out extremely quickly. The conditions are good now. The track is still dusty, but everybody wants to
41:25get on with it.
41:26So even before we have a green light, they were all bolting out of the garages to get on with
41:32it.
41:32We're seeing red tyres all round. There was a little bit of a wobbly, what looked like a wobbly wheel
41:37cover on the Aston Martin.
41:38We'll see if that falls off. But otherwise, all is well in the pit lane. No further problems with hydraulic
41:46leaks or anything like that.
41:47Not to say Marmots, Crofty. Nothing as yet. And they're all very keen to go, some with very different setups,
41:55some with not different setups at all.
41:58But, yeah, the Mounties, the Moose and the Marmots here in Montreal. Hopefully we won't see any of them on
42:03track.
42:04Yes, absolutely. Still with the M's there, Ted Kravitz. Thank you very much indeed. Today's about pole. Tomorrow's about ponchos.
42:11Set your car up for today and tomorrow. It's the ultimate compromise. But who's going to come out on top
42:16then, I wonder?
42:17At a track that the drivers do enjoy racing, and we were treated to a magnificent sprint race, a pretensions
42:24fraught, shall we say, on one half of the Mercedes garage.
42:29If you're a young teenager, you're 19 years of age, you're leading the world championship now by 18 points. How
42:34do you calm down for this, Martin?
42:35He's got enough people around him, experienced people around him, especially in that Mercedes-Benz team together for ages, haven't
42:43they?
42:44As Braun, as Honda, and BAR, a lot of them were there. They've been around.
42:49And his engineer, Bono, will be talking to him calmly, I'm sure.
42:55Sounds like Toto was probably a bit more stern than that in wanting to keep the dirty washing address behind
43:02closed doors.
43:03He did not want it all spoken about over the radio earlier on.
43:07But, you know, when you've got a young buck like that coming into the team, you know you've got some
43:11managing to do.
43:12Green light then, and away we go.
43:15Alex Albon leading the cars out of the pit lane.
43:19Liam Lawson will follow him, and that's good to see them on the track, as neither of them got there
43:23for sprint qualifying yesterday.
43:25This is Franco Colopinto coming out of the Alpine garage, and, ooh, there's Fernando Alonso.
43:31Deciding to take up a bit of real estate in front of him.
43:35Are we going to have a look at that, I wonder?
43:37I mean, he had to break, did Franco?
43:40He had to break pretty hard.
43:42There wasn't any contact, but could Fernando have waited?
43:46Yes, before the pit lane was actually open, isn't it?
43:49So I don't know where that quite stands.
43:50But I think there's bigger things to worry about in the world than that.
43:56They didn't hit each other, and it was fine, but it was a little bit clumsy there of Aston, too.
44:01You can't see out the side of the car.
44:03There's a driver with your hands device on and seated in the car, the headrest, and you can't sort of
44:09look for yourself.
44:10So you're 100% dependent on somebody else telling you on the radio or gesticulating to go.
44:17So nothing he could do about it.
44:19Oli Behrman out on track as well.
44:20Both the Haas cars, Behrman and Ocon, running the new upgrades.
44:25They've both got the same spec.
44:26That hasn't been the case all weekend long.
44:28And Oli's saying that we're still searching for pace here.
44:31We're going to plough on with this, but we need to find some pace from somewhere.
44:35Aston Martin were the slowest qualifiers at the Japanese Grand Prix, and again during the Miami Sprint.
44:42Cadillac, you might think, might be down the bottom as well, but they've showed a bit of an increased pace
44:47here.
44:47Willing to take advantage if anyone does suffer an unfortunate Q1.
44:52Audi, keep an eye on Audi.
44:54Bortoletto and Holt during the Miami Sprint.
44:57Cadillac, you might think, might be down the bottom as well, but they've showed a bit of an increased pace
45:02here.
45:02Willing to take advantage if anyone does suffer an unfortunate Q1.
45:08Audi, keep an eye on Audi.
45:09Bortoletto and Hülkenberg tied at 14 apiece as teammates since they became teammates last season.
45:15And Alex Albon being that out there in Q1, let's hope it's a smooth, incident-free qualifying after Sprint qualifying.
45:22Well, this time last year when he lost his engine cover before eventually making it through to Q3.
45:27Absolutely, they're doing some preparation laps as well out there.
45:32And we have got a lot of cars, everybody out on the racetrack.
45:37And some on used tyres, so Alonso noted, unsurprisingly that it's been noted.
45:45Yeah, and they'll have to get at it now and just prepare because some new tyres, some used tyres I
45:51noticed, they're restricted to six sets of these soft compound tyres on a sprint weekend.
45:57One less set than normal, which means they have to eat them out a little bit more.
46:01Something that Bernie Collins knows well down on the pit.
46:05Hopefully, Martin.
46:06So just to give you a quick update on those unused sets at the minute, it's the two McLarens, the
46:11two Mercedes, Verstappen, the two Ferraris and Lindblad.
46:15We don't have Hatcher on track, he's the only car not on track.
46:18But those drivers, so the top four teams at Lindblad, are the only ones unused.
46:23Everyone else, a new set of soft.
46:25And they can use a used set of soft compound tyres that they would have used from sprints qualifying.
46:31We don't normally get that on a normal Grand Prix weekend, but they've got the option to use a set
46:37that's been used before for these early stages.
46:39Keep the new ones nice and fresh for a little bit later on.
46:44Now, Aston Martin, the sporting director, is going to be a busy man.
46:48Because we've said about Alonso being noted for unsafe release.
46:51Now, Lance Stroll has been noted for being released in an unsafe condition, not him, his car.
46:57So there might be a bit of dialogue going on between the pit wall and, well, Alonso is going to
47:03be investigated after the session for that unsafe release.
47:06OK.
47:07Ted's in the pit lane, has more news.
47:09It was the wonky wheel rim that I saw.
47:12Ah, yes.
47:12It was wonky on the Aston, on the front left.
47:15And right now, the man from the FIA is passing me by.
47:20I thought maybe it was only the sticker that had been put on in a wonky way.
47:24Because as it trundled down the pit lane, I could see it's all, you know, out of kilter.
47:28And now the FIA, I think you're going to get a shot in a second, giving it to the Aston
47:32Martin chief mechanic and say,
47:34there you go, there's your wheel rim back.
47:36There's your spinner.
47:36The little fairing on the front of the wheel rim.
47:41And maybe you'd like to answer some questions as to why it flew off.
47:45Yeah, that might be an after-the-session investigation as well.
47:48Thanks ever so much, Ted.
47:49Oli Behrman's on his way and on a fast lap currently.
47:52Oscar Piastri has got a lap on the board with the 1.15.1 ahead of Alex Albon.
47:57A couple of seconds down.
47:58Early stages here.
47:59And I'm not surprised to see a lot of people having a couple, Martin, of warm-up attempts here.
48:04because generating some temperature into these tyres with a track temperature 31 degrees
48:08might not be the easiest thing in the world to do.
48:11Behrman goes second fastest.
48:12Yes, 10 degrees cooler than yesterday.
48:15We've just had the Formula 2 race, which will have scrubbed the surface a little bit,
48:19but they do use Pirelli tyres, so the same sort of family of compounds.
48:23And I think the track will ramp up pretty quickly.
48:26Lando Norris, fastest of all through the first sector.
48:29Max Verstappen, fastest of all through the middle sector
48:32until Lando Norris passes that timing beam
48:34and puts a couple of tenths more on his time ahead of Verstappen.
48:40To the line we watch now, behind Lewis Hamilton and picking up a toe.
48:44Verstappen going quickest and into the 1.14s now.
48:47Half a second clear of Oscar Piastri.
48:50And now Lando Norris to the final chicane.
48:53With Colopinto going second fastest.
48:54It's a decent lap from him to only be a tenth off the Red Bull.
48:58Lando Norris, best of third on the grid here in previous years.
49:01Here's a 1.14.2 from him.
49:03Goes quickest overall.
49:05Antonelli's on the track.
49:06He's already a tenth up on any previous best time.
