00:00Mrs. Irene Obamneme, a pregnant woman and the wife of Stephen Obamneme Nwosu who was allegedly shot dead on Valentine
00:08Day around Amufi Junction along Benin, Agbor Road in Benin City, the Edo State Capitol has cried out to well
00:15-meaning individuals and civil society organizations to help her prevail on President Bola Ahmed Tanubu, the Chief of Defense Staff,
00:25General Olufemi Oliade and the 4 Brigade of the Nigerian Army.
00:30to bring the suspected murderer of her husband to justice, stating that, she has no knowledge if the soldier who
00:36allegedly committed the murder is actually being prosecuted, saying, till date, the family has no information about the identity of
00:44the alleged killer or any legal action taken by the military authority to make the killer soldier face full wrath
00:51of the law, adding that, the corpse of her husband has been in the mortuary since the incident occurred on
00:58February 14, 2015,
01:00because the family believed if the husband is buried, they may never get justice and the case may be swept
01:06under the carpet, the bereaved pregnant woman made the appeal in a 21 minutes video made available to us fortnight
01:13ago after we had earlier reported that the family of Stephen Obamneme Nwosu has accused the armed forces of Nigeria,
01:21AFN led by General Olufemi Oliade, the Nigeria Chief of Defense Staff of Attempted Acts to cover up a soldier
01:29who allegedly murdered the young man, Stephen Obamneme Nwosu on February 14, 2026,
01:36Valentine's Day, along Benin Agbo Road around Amufi Junction in Edo State, this, according to the family member who pleaded
01:44for her names not to be mentioned in the press,
01:48said her brother was shot dead by the soldier after the deceased refused to hand over his car key to
01:53the soldier as demanded, saying, her brother only went out with his friend,
01:57she identified as Godwin Coco to get chicken feed when they encountered the soldier at the failed portion of the
02:04road that is currently under construction,
02:06saying, the Nigerian Army has refused to disclose the names of the soldier who allegedly committed the act of murder
02:13or take appropriate lawful actions against the suspected murderer,
02:17and in a swift reaction, when our reporter contacted the public relations officer of 4 Brigade of the Nigerian Army,
02:26Captain Kennedy and Yan Muvaya phone call on Thursday evening, the military authority said it is not true that the
02:32soldier in question has not been identified,
02:36saying, the matter has been settled, and when our reporter demanded to know how the alleged murder case was settled
02:42with the family,
02:43the military authority refused to give details, also, when our reporter contacted the Edo State Command of the Nigeria Police
02:51Force Public Relations Officer,
02:53ASP Noakodum, the police authority said the matter is under investigation and there is no way such matter can be
03:01swept under the carpet.
03:03According to the bereaved pregnant woman, eyewitnesses said after her husband was shot and was in the pool of his
03:09blood,
03:09the killer soldier wanted to abandon him but the people around prevailed on him,
03:14and that was when the soldier decided to take the victim to the hospital and the bereaved family was later
03:19told by an officer that her husband was pronounced dead at the hospital,
03:23but she and the family believed the officer is lying because, according to her,
03:28when the bereaved family visited the hospital the officer claimed their son was taken to,
03:33the doctor at the hospital denied receiving such person as a patient.
03:36The woman noted that on Tuesday, February 17, 2026,
03:42officials from the 4th Brigade of the Nigerian Army,
03:45the Edo State Command of the Nigeria Police Force and the Construction Company visited the bereaved family house
03:51and sympathized with the family and assured the family that due process would be followed to make sure the soldier,
03:58who allegedly committed the crime is prosecuted,
04:00but ever since, the bereaved family had had several meetings with the Edo State Police Command and the military authorities,
04:08and yet, no reasonable thing has been said to assure the family that the suspect is actually being prosecuted
04:14and the compensation they claim to pay is being processed.
04:18Continuing,
04:19the young widow said till date she does not know the name of the soldier who killed her husband or
04:24the military command he worked with,
04:26for her to always remember the man who killed her husband,
04:29begging the military authority to at least allow her access to such information.
04:34The young widow said she wrote through her lawyer to the Edo State Commissioner of Police to take the matter
04:40to court,
04:40but ever since, still, the case has not been taken to court and she's no longer trusting the way and
04:46manner the police is handling the issue,
04:49hence, her coming out publicly to beg and appeal for anyone to help her get justice.
04:54All I am seeking for, is justice for my husband, the soldier identified, tried and prosecuted,
05:02so that it will be on record that my husband was murdered.
05:05And when the children grow up, they will know that their father was not involved in any criminal activity.
05:12We have a two-year-old boy and the one we are expecting, she said.
05:17Hi, everyone.
05:20My name is Mrs. Irene Obuneme.
05:24I'm the wife to the victim, Mr. Steven Obuneme.
05:35I'm here to plead to any relevant agency that can help me to seek justice
05:43for the extrajudicial killing of my husband on the 14th of February, 2026.
05:53My husband had left home at about 8.50 a.m. thereabouts to go get feed for his birds.
06:10He runs a poultry.
06:15And I could remember calling him at around 10.48.
06:22And he told me vividly that he was already on his way back home, that I would see him soon.
06:33I waited for over an hour, and then I tried calling him back.
06:40It rang at the first dial, and when I tried again, his boat lines were switched off.
06:50I thought maybe he was caught up in, maybe something else, or maybe traffic.
06:59And only for me to see his friend.
07:06Few hours, some hours later, his friend came home and said I should come with him.
07:14He told me that they had an altercation with a soldier and that he doesn't know if the soldier took
07:26him to the barra or any of the nearest police station.
07:32So I got dressed and followed him, went to the nearest police station, on getting there, after I had spent
07:43over an hour for any of the officers or somebody to talk to me or tell me something.
07:53Because they had asked me to wait for the DPO, that he wasn't on seat, that when he comes, he
07:59would address the issue.
08:05Only for the DPO to come and tell me that they are sorry that the deceased has been taken to
08:20the mortuary,
08:20and that he did not make it.
08:25I got confused, because I don't understand what could have transpired to the point of me getting such news.
08:41At that point, I was in shock, I was in disbelief.
08:45All I just wanted, I just told them, okay, just take me to him.
08:51I just want to see him.
08:55Just maybe, let me see him and understand what you're saying.
09:01Then they said, we should come to the state CID.
09:07At the time, I was thinking, maybe he's at the state CID.
09:12I was just in total disbelief.
09:14I didn't want to take, I didn't take or buy what DPO was saying, that he did not make it.
09:22So when they said we should go to the state CID, I thought, okay, probably that's where he is.
09:29Only for us to get to the state CID, after many back and forth, go here, do this, they brought
09:40out the soldier and said, this is the soldier that shot your husband.
09:45And I was still confused.
09:49Next thing they said, the commissioner of police in a dual state invited us to his office.
09:59Got there, I saw the commissioner seated and the brigade commander seated too.
10:09And all I could hear was, was so sorry, it is not in our ethics, this and that, the soldier
10:19will be, the case will be investigated and the soldier will be persecuted.
10:26They were saying so many things that wasn't making sense.
10:31And I told them, take me to where he is, that's just all, let me see him.
10:37Then they handed me over his phones and said they were going to take me to where he is.
10:50But then, when we came down, while waiting for them to take me to the motorway they said, they've taken
10:59him to.
11:01And the next thing they said, the next thing they said was, it was already late, that the IPO isn't
11:07here.
11:09And the IPO was the one who took the body to the motorway.
11:12And the IPO needs to give us a tag that would allow the motorway attendants to allow us to see
11:22him.
11:23And the fact that I'm pregnant, I was already, I think, six months gone at the time.
11:30And the fact that I'm pregnant, I can't come into the motorway.
11:37As they were there saying all of this, time was already running past.
11:42I think it was already late.
11:44It was already past seven or two, eight, something like that, eight p.m.
11:53I was confused.
11:55Nobody was agreeing to take me there.
11:58I didn't know my way to the place.
11:59I don't even know where.
12:01I was just confused.
12:05And for the fact that I was in so much denial that there's no way my husband would be dead,
12:15I came back home on that 14th, came back hoping and praying.
12:23I hoped so much.
12:25I prayed so much that it should just be a dream, a nightmare, or maybe even a prank.
12:36Or you should just let it be a miracle.
12:40I prayed.
12:41I hoped for a miracle.
12:44That by morning, which was on the 15th of February, that I would be told he came back.
12:55That I would be told probably they noticed life still in him, and then they rushed him to the hospital.
13:03I prayed, hoping.
13:06And then on the 15th, that was on a Sunday, around 10 a.m.
13:14I went back to the police station.
13:17At the time, I had informed my parents and some family members.
13:27So, we went to the police station.
13:31The officers there said the IPO went to church.
13:34We had to wait for the IPO to come back from church.
13:38We had to watch this and that.
13:41While I waited, I got angry.
13:44And then I met the officer there and said, call the IPO.
13:48This isn't something we will just sit and be waiting around for the IPO to come anytime before they will
13:55take us to the mortuary they said they deposited his body.
14:01Call, let them tell us how we will go about it.
14:04If it means the IPO having to speak with the mortuary attendants to let us in or something.
14:10That was when the officer then made the call to the IPO.
14:16And then they said we could go to the mortuary.
14:21Getting to the mortuary, I was not allowed in.
14:26My family members got in and they showed his body and they came out to tell me that truly my
14:41husband was gone.
14:46My whole world crumbled.
14:52My whole world crumbled.
14:57Even at that, I still didn't believe it.
15:02I still hoped that it can't be.
15:09I still hoped and prayed that there was no way my husband was going to end like that.
15:17There was no way my husband's life was going to end like that.
15:21I still hoped.
15:22I still prayed.
15:23I was still in denial.
15:28This month of May was making three months.
15:34I have been in denial.
15:35I have been in total shock.
15:37And for the fact that I have not seen him, I have come to terms that he's gone.
15:47After that day, I asked questions.
15:54His friends said they were already close to the house.
16:00For the fact that the highway that leads our residence is under construction.
16:12So, they didn't know the other lane was blocked because they didn't block it at the entrance.
16:21So, they came in to the other lane.
16:24So, getting close to the entrance to our residence, they saw the caution line.
16:38His friend was the one driving.
16:41My husband didn't go out with his car.
16:43He went out with his friend and his friend was the one driving.
16:48So, when he saw the caution line, he tried to reverse the car to make a turn and use the
16:58other lane that he had left for motorists who were coming and going to use.
17:06While making that U-turn, the soldier accosted him and demanded for the car key.
17:14His friend said, they said, he told the soldier, ah, sorry, we didn't see it on time.
17:24Besides, I was ready for him to go join the other motorists.
17:31And then, he ignored the soldier and completed the turning.
17:37Only for him to sight the soldier from his side mirror.
17:43On a bike, chasing their car.
17:47Shooting at the car.
17:51That they drove and they panicked.
17:55He said, he and my husband panicked for the soldier to be shooting at the car.
18:01They panicked.
18:04And then, ended up parking the car at a fuel station that wasn't operating.
18:12As the party.
18:14He came down.
18:16He said, my husband's friend said, my husband came down first.
18:19Was running.
18:21He came down.
18:22And then, my husband stopped running.
18:26And for the fact that I've known my husband for a long time.
18:30I've known him to be someone that wouldn't run in that situation.
18:37For the fact that he knows he has done no wrong.
18:42He wouldn't.
18:44I'm sure that was why he stopped.
18:48I'm sure that was why he stopped.
18:50I'm sure that was why he stopped when he realized.
18:52I hadn't done any crime.
18:54I hadn't done anything wrong.
18:57They were wrong.
19:01And when I think about it, I wish.
19:04I wish he kept running.
19:08I wish he did stop.
19:12I wish he knew the soldier was going to shoot, to kill.
19:21I wish he had continued running.
19:25But then, he stopped.
19:28And his friend ran past him.
19:29And escaped.
19:33And the eyewitnesses at the scene said, when the soldier came to him,
19:39He was telling him that he wasn't the one driving.
19:44He had told his friend to pull over.
19:48Let them know the issue.
19:50Why the soldier would be shooting at the car.
19:54But they panicked.
19:56That they have done no wrong.
19:58So why shoot at them like that?
20:03And then, the soldier shot him.
20:09So after he had shot at my husband, he made to leave him there, in the pool of his own
20:21blood.
20:22But then, eyewitnesses accosted him and said, he can't leave him there.
20:29That was when he took him, took him and said, they said, the officer said, the soldier said, he took
20:45him to a hospital.
20:50And the doctor.
20:51And the doctor confirmed him dead.
20:53That was when they now took him to the police station and from there to the mortuary.
21:02So when he went to the hospital to ask, the doctor said he cannot remember any victim or any patient
21:14that was brought in.
21:22He can't remember having such case in his hospital on the 14th of February.
21:33And since then, the event on the 17th on a Tuesday, the commissioner of police, the brigade general, the 4th
21:48brigade general in Edo State.
21:51And representatives from the Bini Asaba Concession Construction Company, they visited, they paid the condolence visit.
22:06They visited the house.
22:11The police said, sympathized with the family and assured us that due process will be taken to see that the
22:27soldier is persecuted.
22:34And they assured that he was still in the police custody.
22:43So we believed them.
22:48And ever since then, it's been one meeting or the other because they also agreed to compensate the family for
23:00the loss.
23:02Even though I know that there is no amount of compensation that would ever replace my husband, that would ever
23:18make hope for his death.
23:29And so, we've been going for meetings at the commissioner's office.
23:38We've had about three meetings at the commissioner's office.
23:42And to date, nothing reasonable has been said.
23:51No moves has been made to assure us that they are keeping to their words of making sure the soldier
24:01pays for his strength.
24:05Up to date, I don't know the name of the soldier.
24:09I don't know the command he was sent from.
24:16Nothing.
24:17Nothing.
24:17And these are things I asked for.
24:20For closure.
24:22At least let me know his name.
24:25Or the name of the man who killed my husband.
24:29But they've denied me that right.
24:33Okay.
24:35I said, I've sent a letter to the commissioner of police.
24:42Take this matter to court.
24:44It's been over a month.
24:45The lawyer sent out that letter.
24:50Take this matter to court.
24:52Until date, nothing has been done.
24:58That is why I have come out.
25:02To plea.
25:03To beg.
25:07That anyone that can help me should please help me.
25:11All I'm seeking for is justice.
25:14All I'm seeking for is justice for my husband.
25:17That is all I'm seeking for is justice for my husband.
25:25The soldier identified.
25:29The soldier tried.
25:32And let it be on record.
25:36That my husband was killed.
25:38That my husband was murdered.
25:41So that when our children grow.
25:46We have a two years old son.
25:52And another.
25:55That I'm expecting.
25:59I want them to grow.
26:02And let it be on record.
26:04That their father was not involved in any criminal activities.
26:10I want them to grow.
26:12And have it on record.
26:15That their father was killed.
26:18Was murdered by a soldier.
26:23I want them to grow.
26:25And let it be proof.
26:28To back up the story that I tell them.
26:34I want them to grow.
26:35And know that yes.
26:40The soldier who shot their father.
26:44Was punished.
26:46Papa stop.
26:50And I am begging anybody.
26:55Anyone that can help.
26:58To see that we seek justice.
27:01I will get justice
27:02So please
27:05Come to my aid
27:08Thank you
