00:00Hi, I'm Danny. I'm 35 and today marks one year of sobriety, one year since I last had a drink.
00:08One year of reinventing myself for my family, trying to better myself for my children, for my wife, for my
00:17family.
00:17It's an emotional day for me because I never, ever in a million years believe this was achievable, genuinely.
00:23A year to the day, a Friday, that was always the thing that stuck in my mind.
00:27Who gives up drink on a Friday? Well, me, I did.
00:30Start the Monday, I knew I had a bit of an issue with it. I fell down a rabbit hole
00:32of drinking.
00:33Steph has been an absolute rock throughout it, despite me itching for a drink every now and again.
00:38And I'm not an alcoholic by any means. I'm out to better myself for my family, for my career, for
00:44my children mainly.
00:45I wanted them to get the best version of me without me being frustrated that they were there and they
00:51were present when I wasn't, during a hangover.
00:53And it became too much. I could tell that I was distant from them.
00:57Every single water park, theme park event that we used to go to with the kids, I'd always have to
01:04just check there's a bar first, then I could enjoy myself.
01:07It was beyond control.
01:09Well, I've now changed my ways with that and them kind of things don't bother me.
01:14Why am I doing this video? Do I want to be a voice for sobriety? No.
01:17Am I asking for attention? No.
01:19Am I asking for praise? No.
01:21I'm merely saying that if I can do it, then you can do it.
01:24And I know that's such a boring cliche saying, but if any of my friends that know me, well, any
01:30of my friends that knew me will tell you that I was always the biggest drinker.
01:36The first one with a beer. I was always the last one to bed.
01:40I was always the biggest voice in the room, the party guy.
01:42The one who didn't shut up, who always had to take the mick.
01:45And I can still do all those things to a degree, but without having to be the annoying drinking one.
01:51If you're lucky enough to be a father, embrace it because it genuinely doesn't last long enough.
01:55Instagram tells you that every two minutes. They grow up so quickly.
01:58And then it's gone.
01:59Know that you're watching this thinking the same because I've seen these videos.
02:02And if you're thinking about doing it, just do it. Please trust me, just do it.
02:07One year, no beer. That was what a colleague of mine at work said.
02:09One year, no beer. Try it. See how you get on.
02:11My career, my family life, everything has just got better since.
02:15As I say, I'm not after attention.
02:17I don't need people telling me how well I've done or anything like that.
02:21Because I know myself, it's the one time I can allow my ego to step forward and go,
02:24well done, mate. You've done brilliant.
02:26I'd say thanks to my wife, actually, mainly because she's been so supportive.
02:29She's been incredible throughout all of this.
02:32You can do the same.
02:34Really, a video to say that if I can do it, then you can do it.
