00:00Affecting Aaron Nola is the ABS system.
00:03Now, he complained about the pitch clock when that was put into place.
00:06Now the ABS, has that impacted him at all?
00:09Yeah, Bill, I honestly think that it has.
00:12And this is something that I've heard from other teams,
00:15that he's just having a really difficult time adjusting to ABS.
00:20So I was talking with the manager of one of the teams the Phillies played recently.
00:25He was telling me that some of the pitchers on all teams
00:31who used to rely on popping the catcher's mitt
00:34and getting called strikes on balls just off the plate
00:38are having big problems now.
00:40That's obvious why.
00:42ABS doesn't care that you just hit that mitt.
00:46And you want to guess one of the first names that he brought up to me?
00:50That's our guy Aaron Nola.
00:52And, you know, I took a look at this.
00:54I looked at the shadow zone, which is the pitches just around this ABS strike zone.
01:00His on-base percentage on those pitches is 60 points higher than last year.
01:06I mean, it's not just him.
01:09The zone is three inches smaller on average than it was last year.
01:16The walk rate is way up.
01:18The unintentional walk rate is the highest we've ever seen, highest ever.
01:25And hitters are just learning to lay off.
01:29We're going to see 10,000 more pitches not swung at than last year.
01:35So I wrote about this last week.
01:37It's just a reminder that ABS is doing more than changing
01:42just how we call balls and strikes.
01:44Interesting, isn't it?
01:48I'm going to see all day.
01:49It's just like if you were going to see what happens there.
01:49If thosexis are still amazing, you can be left off.
01:49Let's go.
01:49If you're in a manner of thinking it is overlapping,
01:50you can see that.
01:50It should take a smoTYoll szpick.
