01:00I always got the sense that you always really acknowledge the heaviness in the world.
01:05Like you would talk, you're very well aware of everything that's always happening, and you always said it affects you
01:10a lot.
01:10And I'm wondering, as your career has progressed and you've gotten older, how do you deal with that side of
01:17you?
01:17Do you embrace it more?
01:19Do you control it more?
01:20How do you manage that part?
01:23I think for sure I had to work on the part where I want to control things, because when you're
01:31disappointed with something and you have your control freak inside, that drains a lot of your energy because you want
01:40to change things.
01:40But there are things that I wanted to change that I had zero control over because it's just the way
01:46the world is.
01:47And, you know, just letting that go definitely helped.
01:51And, yeah, for sure, just focusing on the things that I can actually change and changing them.
01:58It didn't make me, you know, I still understand all of these things.
02:03I just don't think they have such an emotional load in them.
02:09Also, as you get older, you don't take everything so personal or so close.
02:15And that helps, so I never want to be young again.
02:20But nothing, you know, a lot of therapy also.
02:24It helped, for sure.
02:27But, yeah, I mean, I'm still the same empathetic person.
02:32So I understand things, but, you know, I don't let them, you know, ruin my day or ruin my mood
02:38or whatever.
02:41Hi, Marta.
02:42As you've said, you're an emotional player.
02:45When you're getting emotional on the court, how do you find it affects your play?
02:51Some players it improves, some players it, you know, is a sign that things are going the other direction.
02:58Are you one way or the other where in terms of your emotions getting out on the court, how does
03:05it affect your play?
03:06Well, I think I try to focus on, again, coming back.
03:11I try to focus on the things that I can control.
03:13And there are days when you can play really good, but everything is just not going your way.
03:18And it's fine.
03:20So I really just try to be realistic about what's going on rather than just wanting to win and wanting
03:26the results and so on.
03:29So I know when I need to let it out and, you know, just because it like builds up and
03:37then I just have to let it go.
03:39And then there are moments where I can kind of explain to myself why I shouldn't feel that way or
03:46this way.
03:46And I can change my narrative and I can change the, I can change the, like change my focus so
03:56then the emotions go away and it doesn't have the same weight on me.
04:01But I'm very happy that I'm emotional.
04:04So for sure I find ways when it helps me.
04:08Hi Marta, there are two quick questions if I could.
04:10The first one is, given the results you've had this year, do you come in here thinking that you could
04:17actually contend for this title if you play to the peak of your ability?
04:23So in the last four Grand Slams, I lost first round in three of them.
04:29So, you know, I think it's like, it's a very, you know, big jumps.
04:35I, I try not to think about this at all.
04:39If people think I can do it, I'm capable of it, great.
04:42I'm only thinking about my first match and then if I win my first match or when I win my
04:48first match, I'm going to be thinking about my second match.
04:51But I'm definitely not thinking about the whole thing because it's just too much.
04:54Like, I think if you ask any player who is here, whether it's number one in the world, 10, 100,
05:02whatever, if they're going to start this tournament thinking they can win it from the first round, it's going to
05:07be too difficult to bear this and too difficult to just play tennis.
05:11You know, you will think about the result, you will think about the outcome and this is not the point.
05:17The point is to enjoy.
05:19It's understandable.
05:21The other one is, you're obviously a comfortable talker in front of the media like this and your press comments
05:28will last a while.
05:29My understanding is that there's a directive that players are only to speak to the media for 15 minutes today.
05:36Is that something you've been informed of, told to do at all?
05:42Well, I've been informed.
05:44I just chose not to do it and that's it.
05:48So you're going to not adhere to the 15 minutes?
05:52Yeah, well, I mean, I'm aware of the conversation that is going on and I fully respect players for, you
06:00know, bringing these causes out and fighting for them and fighting for the future of tennis.
06:05I think it's very important.
06:06I was never part of any conversation.
06:09I'm aware of it, but I never, you know, I was never there.
06:13And again, it's difficult to, you know, tennis is such unique and complex sport that it's difficult to compare it
06:20to team events, to team competition.
06:24And because tennis has multiple stakeholders, shareholders, yeah.
06:31Yeah.
06:32But I think that to continue the conversation is super important.
06:36I'm going to be fulfilling my obligations this week.
06:40I'm excited to be here.
06:41And that's it.
06:43Thank you.
06:46Marta, I believe you were quite into gymnastics when you were younger.
06:49You showed us your amazing back flip in Madrid.
06:53Yannick Sinner was quite an accomplished skier when he was younger.
06:57How important is it to do these other sports when you're younger to become a professional tennis player?
07:04I think it definitely developed me really well in the physical part.
07:13But I had to deal with a lot of consequences afterwards because, as we know, this type of sports, gymnastics,
07:19acrobatics, they require, it's very strict sports.
07:23You know, I had to be super skinny.
07:26I had to control what I eat.
07:28And I would weigh myself 20, 30 times a day when I was from 8 to 10 years old.
07:36And it's not the weight that you can, you know, carry when you are this age because you don't think,
07:42you are not supposed to think about the food.
07:44You are never getting fat, you know, especially when you are doing sports for five hours a day.
07:50And that had some consequences on me, obviously, that I had to work through.
07:54And majority of my life, it felt like it was a burden in that sense.
07:59Right now, I'm free of that.
08:01And I'm very grateful that I had the chance to do this sport and to have the ability to do
08:07backflip and all of the things that I've done in the past.
08:11I also sustained really big injury when I was young.
08:14I broke my adductor and that had also consequences in my career, which I've also dealt with and I fixed
08:22them.
08:22But it took a while.
08:25So I don't know about Yannick and how his experiences and if he ever got any bad injuries, but I've
08:32been there.
08:32So there is always two sides.
08:34But for sure, it helped my tennis and I'm happy that I got out on the other side better.
08:43I stopped at 11.
08:47Just curious, in general, then, would you like to be part of conversations about the sport and these political subjects?
08:55And is there a reason why you decided not to participate?
08:59Well, I didn't decide not to participate.
09:02I was just never asked to be at the discussion.
09:05I was not a top 10 player and I'm still not a top 10 player.
09:09So that's probably the reason.
09:10I'm very happy to be part of the conversation and discussion.
09:14I always have something to say.
09:16You know, I always have something to ask.
09:17And I like, you know, when more people get together.
09:22But again, we're individual sports.
09:24So it's great if there's going to be a change, if things will move forward.
09:27But it's not easy.
09:29It's different.
