00:14I'm Jim Olson with Volvo Trucks Academy. Today we'll be walking around the Volvo V&L 860.
00:21This is an instructional training video to help you understand the features of this truck and
00:26how to sell the value to your customer. We will review by section and you can watch each chapter
00:32in this video as needed. Let's get started. Here we are at the front of the truck. Let's
00:38begin with aerodynamics and our wedge shape body design. The nose is narrow and the cab
00:43gradually widens towards the rear. That shape isn't just about looks. It's designed to cut
00:49cleanly through the wind, reduce drag, and improve fuel efficiency. Take a close look at the windshield.
00:55It's aggressively sloped and it's curved and it's actually bonded directly into the steel
01:01cab. That gives the truck better structural integrity, quieter operation, and smoother
01:07air flow over the cab. This truck is equipped with the ultimate exterior. We also offer the
01:13edge black, edge, and core trim levels to best suit your customer's business and their needs.
01:19The bumper and hood have been carefully designed to manage air. The three-piece aerodynamic bumper
01:26channels air where it needs to go, balancing cooling and efficiency. The grill opening is optimized so
01:33the engine gets the airflow it needs without creating unnecessary drag. The V&L offers Volvo's
01:40intelligent lighting system equipped with an all LED design including optional automatic high beams as
01:47as well as cornering lamps and fog lamps in the bumper. Positioned to improve visibility while still
01:53reducing aerodynamic drag. Every V&L comes standard with Volvo Active Driver Assist or VEDA. That means
02:02forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane
02:08departure warning, and forward pedestrian detection. All working together to protect the driver and everyone
02:15around them. Now let me show you how to open the hood. The hood latch is accessed right inside the
02:23driver's
02:23door. You can reach it from here. One of the first things customers notice is how easy this hood is
02:34to open.
02:38It only takes about 46 pounds of effort to open, one of the easiest in the industry. The hood also
02:45includes safety sensors that prevent remote starting when the hood is open. We offer a flared frame rail
02:51design that allows the engine and transmission to sit lower in the chassis in the event of a severe frontal
02:56collision. Both components are engineered to drop down and slide underneath the cab instead of injuring the
03:03driver. You'll also notice how service friendly everything is under the hood. Easy access points
03:10and translucent reservoirs for coolant, power steering fluid, and washer fluid make daily checks fast and
03:17simple. The D13 engine is available multiple horsepower and torque ratings up to 500 horsepower and 1950
03:25pound-feet of torque so we can match the truck exactly to the customer's application. Behind that engine is the
03:32Volvo I-Shift automated transmission standard on every V&L. The I-Shift works seamlessly with our adaptive cruise
03:39control and engine brake to maximize fuel economy. Volvo dynamic steering reduces the driver's steering
03:45effort by up to 85 percent. It filters out road vibration, helps compensate for crosswinds, and makes
03:52maneuvering less strenuous for the driver. Now let's talk about the cab. The cab itself is built from both
03:59ultra-high strength and high strength steels. It's designed to protect the driver in real-world crash
04:06scenarios. This means that our cab can withstand multiple cab impacts while maintaining the survivable
04:12space for the driver. For more details and information please reference the Swedish impact test and cab safety
04:20documentation. Under the cab we have a 24-volt electrical system. This reduces current demand, improves battery
04:30life, and powers features like the integrated parking cooler. Also integrated into the battery management
04:36system are provisions for jump charging your truck if needed. Volvo has integrated the DEF and fuel into a
04:44single tank to simplify refueling for the drivers. Here at the back of the cab we have our flexible cab
04:51extenders to help airflow from the back of the cab to the trailer reducing drag. While we're at the back
04:59of the
04:59cab let's talk about our camera system. The V&L 860 offers three camera options including a backup camera, five
05:08additional optional cameras, and even an analog camera. All camera views can be displayed on either the
05:14infotainment screen or in the instrument cluster. The tire pressure monitoring system helps drivers stay
05:20on top of tire health by continuously tracking pressure on every wheel. Sensors continuously check
05:26tire pressure and display it in the digital information display. The V&L 860 offers our optional global rear
05:33air suspension or GRAS. This truck is also equipped with our smart suspension. This intelligent technology
05:40automatically adjusts the ride height and balances the load across the axles improving traction and fuel
05:46economy. Whether configured with a single or a tandem axle, aerodynamic enhancements like FlowBlow rear
05:53fairings and wheel covers help reduce turbulence around the rear of the truck. FlowBlow is available from the
06:00factory improving efficiency straight from Volvo. Let's keep moving around the cab and talk about the passenger side.
06:09Our aerodynamic fairings open easily with one hand giving quick access to service points. Here we have
06:16our compact linear after treatment system or EATS designed to be light, simple, and easy to maintain.
06:25This 860 has Volvo's traditional side mirrors but can be equipped with our camera monitoring system or CMS.
06:32CMS replaces the large side mirrors with high mounted camera pods and smaller more
06:37aerodynamic side mirrors for increased fuel efficiency. CMS offers superior visibility in low light
06:44conditions thanks to infrared technology. You'll also find radar sensors built discreetly into the side
06:50fairings supporting our Volvo Advanced Safety Platform or VASP to help detect vehicles and obstacles in blind
06:58spots on both sides of the truck. Rounding out the exterior, let's look at the passenger side under the hood.
07:05Depending on the configuration, the VNL is equipped with a 13 liter engine. You can select either a variable
07:11geometry turbo, VGT, or a turbo compound unit, TC, depending on your customer's application. You'll notice
07:19rubber hood isolators that help minimize noise and vibration in the cab. You will also notice splash
07:25shields that help keep the engine compartment cleaner. To close the hood, I'll first make sure the hood prop lock
07:30is in the unlocked position, then check for any obstructions. Now that we have reviewed the exterior
07:37of the VNL, let's close the hood and take a look inside.
07:55Settling into the seat, the air controls for height and exhaust are on the driver's door side,
08:00but all other controls have easy access on the interior side. The pre-trip lighting system is
08:07standard on the VNL and can be activated with a button just inside the door with the optional key
08:13fob or using the My Truck app. This allows the driver to engage the pre-trip light inspection remotely
08:19or from inside the cab. The VNL has several options for ignition, key start, push button start,
08:26or remote start from the optional fob. All driver controls are within easy reach on the steering wheel.
08:33The VNL has position-perfect steering, allowing the driver to select the most natural position
08:39for their comfort. The steering height, angle, and tilt can be easily adjusted.
08:45The gear shift is located on the right stalk, keeping hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.
08:50This VNL has our ultimate interior trim. Similar to the exterior, customers can select the edge black,
08:59edge, or core interior trims. The interior and exterior trims can be mixed to best suit the
09:06customer's needs or preferences. The digital information display is located front and center
09:12for the driver. The DID shows important operational information and can be customized for driver preferences.
09:18The optional secondary infotainment system is located here in the wraparound dash.
09:25It displays audio information, driver support apps, an integrated ELD, Volvo Dynamic Steering
09:32personal settings, and an onboard driver's manual, and more. Navigation data and digital camera views
09:39can also be viewed here. Safety is integral in every Volvo. In the VNL, we have driver's front and
09:46side curtain airbags as standard equipment, as well as optional carbon monoxide and smoke detectors.
09:52Now let's look at the driver's living environment. The VNL 860 has a spacious and well-organized sleeper.
09:59Storage is everywhere. Overhead cabinets, wardrobe space, drawers, and a desk. You can outfit an
10:07860 with optional prep kits for TVs, microwaves, multiple 120-volt outlets, and even refrigerators.
10:15The climate system is designed so drivers can stay comfortable without idling. Volvo's integrated
10:21parking cooler and heater can keep the cab comfortable for many hours on battery power
10:26and longer with optional remote engine start. Controls for the living area are intuitive and
10:32similar to the dash climate controls. Noise levels are very low thanks to extra insulation and smart
10:39design. Magnetic blackout curtains, USB outlets, and premium lighting options really make the cab feel
10:46like home. This VNL has our telescopic ladder that allows for safe access to the upper bunk. The upper bunk
10:54also features deployable netting, creating additional secure storage when needed. And the sleeper space is
11:01is versatile. Let's convert from rest to work.
11:15The bunk easily stows away, allowing me to lower the dinette workstation and take a seat. Now that we've
11:22reviewed the driver and sleeper environment of the interior, let's step back outside and talk about our
11:28services and solutions. Every VNL comes with our full suite of uptime and connected services. Uptime
11:36includes remote diagnostics that lets our technicians read fault codes in real time and plan repairs before
11:43the truck even arrives at the dealer. Remote programming which allows over-the-air software updates,
11:49keeping trucks up to date without taking them out of service. And if something does go wrong,
11:54Volvo Action Service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Drivers can use the MyTruck app
12:02to check fluid levels, remote start the engine, perform the pre-trip light inspection, and control the cab
12:09temperature from their phone. Fleets can monitor important information on their trucks through Volvo Connect.
12:15They can monitor fuel efficiency, safety data, maintenance schedules, and overall truck health in one simple portal.
12:23This is how we deliver true uptime and peace of mind.
