00:00For BBC Two now, Tony Lewis is at the Oval with highlights of today's cricket.
00:30A new international cricket season and a new England coach, David Lloyd, teaming up with
00:55the captain, Michael Atherton.
00:57And their first selection has produced a number of new faces.
01:00Surrey's Alistair Brown is joined by Ronnie Arani of Essex and Kent's Mark Elam.
01:04All three are one-day specialists, while there's a recall for Chris Lewis on his new home ground.
01:09The visitors in India will look to the outstanding talent of Sachin Tendulkar to give them a lead from the top.
01:15Well, good evening. Our summer of cricket begins here.
01:18The highlights of the first one-day international, India versus England, and we're at the Oval in London.
01:23A new format this year, 50 overs a side, that was the format inherited from the recent World Cup and accepted internationally.
01:31Now, at the toss, the captains, Michael Atherton and Mohamed Azaruddin, they must have had doubts about what to do or what not to do if they won.
01:38Green tinges, hard springy surface. As it was, Atherton won the toss and batted first. Let's check on the pitch with Geoffrey Boycott.
01:46Well, a cool overcast morning, a bit of breeze, but usually the Oval has one of the flattest and best pitchers for cricket.
01:53If we look very closely at it, you'll see it's got a nice matting of grass, but there's no greenness.
02:00There's hardly any greenness about at all. It's going to be pretty flat.
02:04I don't think it'll be as quick as some pitchers at the Oval. Remember, this is still May.
02:08There's been rain about, bad weather, so it'll play just a nice, true, easy bounce, and I'm not surprised that England want to bat first.
02:16There might be a touch of movement early on, but all in all, I would expect the ball to hit the bat quite regularly.
02:23So let's check on our teams now. The England side, they're the newcomers. Brown, Irani, Elam, and the Chris Lewis recall.
02:32No places today for Goff and Maynard. And India, you can see their assessment of the pitch in the selection.
02:38Kumbhle, the one slow bowler. The rest is all seen. And the umpires, Peter Willey and Ray Julian.
02:45The third umpire is Chris Balderson, match referee, Cammy Smith of the West Indies. England win the toss, confirmation.
02:51They're batting first. We have a regular commentary team, as well as Ravi Shastri from India.
02:56So let's join them now. Third ball of the day. Srinath Bowles to Ali Brown. The score, one for no wicket.
03:10Oh, Bowles. Ali Brown's first ball in international cricket. An uncertain prod outside the off stump.
03:21Be interesting to see if the Indians pitch the ball up like that.
03:26Danger at the oval that people want to bowl a little bit short of a length because there's a bit of extra bounce here.
03:32Better off pitching it up.
03:34Now he's dropped him.
03:50Sharpish chance to second slip. That's Vikram Rathor at second slip.
03:54Well, that's good bowling because he beat him with the ball before this shot.
04:01Pitching the ball up. Now he's pitched it up again.
04:03Batsman's gone for the drive. Bit loosely. Bit on the up. And that should have been caught.
04:08Not had much time to get cold hands.
04:13Clips would fancy a catch early on rather than when they've been in the field a long time.
04:17And Ali Brown off the mark. That's a wider third man.
04:34They've got Singh Sidhu.
04:39He runs on the board now to Ali Brown. He'll feel a little happier.
04:42Great shots. That's what Ali Brown has been hired for.
05:04That was a crackling shot. A very short back lift. A little punchy shot.
05:09He was on to it very, very quickly.
05:12Nicely timed too. This oval outfield is quick enough.
05:25Given the weather we've had over recent weeks.
05:31And that's through in. The big shout.
05:34Umpire Ray Julian gives nothing.
05:37That was through on the inside edge.
05:39Maybe between bat and pad.
05:44Disappointment there for Prasad.
05:47Well, they're just getting a little bit of movement with this new ball.
05:50A little bit of early freshness.
05:51You can see there it missed the bat quite comfortably.
05:54Very good decision by the umpire.
05:57Just nipping in between bat and pad.
05:59Might have clipped the top of the thigh.
06:01That's what gave it a little bit of a noise for the fielders to go up.
06:05A good decision.
06:06Straight down the grounds.
06:14Very firmly hit too.
06:18Ali Brown's second boundary of the over.
06:20Well, he's certainly not put off with the plainer missing and the odd thick edge.
06:30It was a cracking shot again.
06:32Only the stumps took the speed off that one.
06:41Great shot it was.
06:45Second time this morning, Ali Brown has punched that ball very hard indeed.
06:49Straight back past the bowler.
06:54Knows this pitch at the oval very, very well.
06:57The sort of pace and bounce he can expect.
06:59And the stumps also saving Peter Willey from potential for a little bit of damage.
07:19That's a loose shot.
07:22One that should have been left alone.
07:24Ali Brown giving some encouragement as well as some punishment to the Indians.
07:29Bowlers.
07:33Well, this is a getting out shot, isn't it?
07:34He's on the front foot and then he rocks back and he's just feeling for it.
07:39No runs in this.
07:40It's just a lack of concentration.
07:42He's looking to be positive.
07:44And that time he got caught out.
07:46That's gone very, very high in the air now.
07:58Tendorka going back from slip.
08:00And the ball falls safely to the ground.
08:03And here is a poor shot.
08:16He's on the front foot pulling from the front foot.
08:18Not a good position.
08:20Top edge over the keeper, over the slips.
08:22And it falls agonisingly for the Indians into no man's land.
08:26That's beating the dive.
08:27That's Mambray at mid on.
08:28I need to try and make up the error.
08:29I don't think he can bowl much better than the two Indian opening bowlers this morning.
08:30Ball a good line, good length.
08:31Got a bit of movement off the ground.
08:32That's Mambray at mid on.
08:33I need to try and make up the error.
08:37I don't think he can bowl much better than the two Indian opening bowlers this morning.
08:56Ball a good line, good length.
08:59Got a bit of movement off the pitch.
09:00But they haven't had any success.
09:02One drop catch.
09:03Again going inside bat and pad.
09:05Cutting the batsman in half.
09:07But no success.
09:08It's just frustration for the bowlers.
09:26Gone this time.
09:27And an overdue success for the Indian bowlers.
09:32Prasad deserved something out of all the things that have been happening out there this morning.
09:37He's the one who's finally come up with the wickets.
09:40Srinath has nothing and Atherton has gone.
09:45Finally getting the edge here, Venkatesh Prasad.
09:47Beautiful delivery again, leaving the bat late.
09:49And Nayan Munger making no mistake.
09:51Just what India needed at this stage.
10:02The bowlers might be wondering if there's any real justice in the world.
10:07They've got a little bit out there now.
10:09That one wicket.
10:10Atherton might wonder the same thing.
10:11The first thing he's done wrong.
10:13Neil Smith has been put in at number three for England.
10:32Beautifully timed stroke.
10:35Smith is off the mark.
10:37And a nice way to get there.
10:40And Chavagal Srinath.
10:41A ball really well out there for no reward.
10:45And then the boundary of the last ball of that open.
10:53Fine shot by Smith.
10:54Waited on it.
10:55But the placement absolutely right.
11:05This is a well-struck stroke.
11:07That's why Neil Smith has come in at number three.
11:13He's there to start hitting over the top.
11:15We're still inside the 15 overs.
11:21Well, one thing is pretty clear that if anything is going to be pitched up,
11:24Neil Smith is going to have a go at it.
11:27Here, smashing it straight back over the bowler's head.
11:29Straight back over the bowler's head.
11:39And it's called no ball.
11:43But it was very, very well bowled.
11:46He saw Brown coming at him.
11:49And just gave him a little deterrent.
12:01Well, Alistair Brown here shooting out of the blocks a little too quickly.
12:05Prasad seeing that, following him.
12:08So lucky Alistair Brown not being hit there on the head.
12:11Paras Mambray, the new bowler from the pavilion end,
12:15plays for Bombay in the Ranji Trophy.
12:21This is his first one-day international.
12:23That's a cracking stroke.
12:35Neil Smith has brought up the half century for England
12:38with that first ball from Mambray.
12:42An international match in this Tour of England.
12:45Good stroke.
12:48Alistair Brown is welcome to the ball increase.
12:49A brilliant cover drive here by Neil Smith.
12:53Standing up tall and smashing it through the offside.
13:06That's another brilliant boundary from Neil Smith.
13:09Hit three of them so far.
13:11And then that one just behind point.
13:14Well, just opening the face of the blade here.
13:16Again, a lovely piece of timing from Neil Smith.
13:19Tall man here, getting the placement absolutely right.
13:24And a third man, had no chance of stopping this one.
13:29He looks to be in good touch, this Neil Smith.
13:35Paras Mambray, not as quick as Javagal Srinath or Venkatesh Prasad.
13:39Ah, good catch.
13:40Tendulkar has taken him, Mambray has a wicket.
13:41Second one to go down.
13:42And a danger man gone, Neil Smith, who is looking to be in very, very good form.
13:57That one just left him enough for Tendulkar to take a good catch.
14:00Two boundaries and now the wicket.
14:03Tendulkar making no mistake.
14:04But again, Neil Smith looking to run the ball down towards third man.
14:08And the ball taking the edge and the Indians picking up their second wicket.
14:11And just have a look at the replay here.
14:16Just watch Tendulkar as his shoulder hits the ground just there.
14:20That's a solid blow.
14:22He clung onto the ball very well all the way through.
14:25Graham Hick is the man coming in at number four for England.
14:38That's beautifully rolled.
14:41It's a class act, Daniel Kumbley.
14:45And, ah, cut short any birthday celebrations that might have been on for Graham Hick.
14:52Graham Hick, very zipped off.
15:02Well, Graham Hick lucky to be still there.
15:03Look how quickly this ball hurries on to him.
15:07Getting the bat down just in the nick of time.
15:22Great shot by Hick.
15:26Little away swing in that delivery from Mambray.
15:30But the line was outside leg stump.
15:32Hick had a chance to turn on it.
15:36And whooped it away through square leg.
15:38Another fine shot from Hick.
15:41Second forward succession.
15:42Crashed away through the covers.
15:44Excellent front foot.
15:45D'oom.
15:46Good.
15:47Good.
15:48Good.
15:49Good.
15:50Good.
15:51Good.
15:52Good.
15:53Good.
15:54Good.
15:55Good.
15:56Good.
15:57Good.
15:58Good.
15:59Good.
16:00Good.
16:01Good.
16:02Good.
16:03Good.
16:04Good.
16:05Good.
16:06Good.
16:07Good.
16:08Good.
16:10Really nice.
16:11Really nice.
16:12Excellent.
16:13Front foot drive.
16:14Just a little bit of width from Mambray.
16:15Just getting it out there.
16:16That's a good shot.
16:20It was short.
16:21It asked for it.
16:23But still executed the shot perfectly.
16:36Yes, Mambry tried to surprise him with a shortish ball.
16:43Banged him, but he's really not quick enough.
16:46Only just a bit above medium pace, and Brown was on to it quite quickly.
17:00Oh, that's a wide and four wides.
17:01He had a lot of movement in the pitch, and set them out a swing in the air.
17:06It all happened there at once.
17:08Added to that, Mambry didn't fire the ball down straight.
17:13Well, most of his deliveries have been out to the right-handed batsman.
17:16Here you can see the wrist action.
17:18He's trying to swing it in, and just pushed it down leg side, way, way wide of the keeper.
17:29Ball's in.
17:30He'll be bold this time.
17:34Paras Mambry has had a tricky little time there.
17:37There's been some movement in the air and off the pitch, but never achieved the penetration until now.
17:46Key was to pitch the ball up, get the batsman driving off the front foot.
17:49I've been saying all along, if you get the ball up to the batsman,
17:53you've got a chance of the ball swinging, and you can cause more difficulties for the batsman.
17:56Alistair Brown did his job.
18:02Nice 37 of 52 balls.
18:0485 for three.
18:09Atherton and Brown and Smith, the men out.
18:13Nick is not at 11, and the new batsman, Graham Thorpe.
18:15Chris Baldurston is the third umpire here today.
18:22Ray Julian and Peter Willey, the men out in the middle.
18:29The umpire is using the red and green light system this year.
18:32Green is OK, red means you're out.
18:42Third umpire has been instructed, as is the convention in this game, to give the benefit of the doubt.
18:46If those replays don't quite make things entirely clear, the benefit of the doubt goes to the batsman.
18:52That's beautifully placed.
19:01Avjot Singh Sidhu is after it, and will catch it inside the fence.
19:09And three runs to Graham Thorpe.
19:12Bring up the England 100.
19:15We're in the 23rd over now.
19:22Fine shot.
19:26Just a little bit short.
19:29From Paris Manbrae.
19:31And that's the shot at which Graham Thorpe excels.
19:40Well, Graham Thorpe here in superb position to play the shot.
19:43He picks up the length so quickly.
19:45Just rocks back on that back foot and pulls it over square leg for his first boundary.
19:52As ever, a minimum of five bowlers needed by both sides in this sort of cricket.
19:59The fifth man used by India today is Sachin Tendulkar.
20:05Wonderful batsman, but a handy bowler as well.
20:0839 wickets at over 50.
20:10I wouldn't pay too much attention to the average at this stage.
20:12That's gone a long, long way.
20:20Straight over mid off for six runs.
20:24And apparently with no real effort at all.
20:26Beautifully timed by Graham Hick.
20:32Well, pitched up here from Tendulkar, and Graham Hick has really climbed into this one.
20:37He's a big, powerful man.
20:38He's opened his shoulders there, and it's gone many a mile over the boundary.
20:41Just waited long enough for the ball to swing right into the arc.
20:49Preparations in the dressing room.
20:52New batsman just getting ready.
20:54Peter Martin on the left.
20:56Stuart on the right.
20:59Still movement in the air there for the bowlers.
21:02He's been there all day.
21:03Tendulkar at a not very brisk pace.
21:08Able to get the ball off line.
21:10There's certainly been some movement off the seam.
21:13It's down a deep square, and there's one at Longleg.
21:32And Thorpe managed perfectly to split them.
21:35Well, this shot brought up the 50 partnership, but very short of a length ball.
21:45Can't air in length much Tendulkar, because he's only very gentle, medium pace.
21:49Graham Hick as well, taking full advantage of these two little medium paces bowling.
21:58Ah, that's brilliant.
22:05Lovely exhibition of wicket-keeping there from Mongia.
22:10He's anticipated well.
22:12Got away to his left, and Thorpe, for all the world, thought it was through and down to the boundary.
22:18Deja has a wicket, and India have struck a vital blow there.
22:22Yeah, a little bit of a surprise there for Graham Thorpe coming down the pitch to the medium pace of Jadeja.
22:30England were doing quite well, scoring very quickly, knocking the ball around, and it was a nice wicket and a nice time, really, for India, with the runs coming too easily for England.
22:4126 for Graham Thorpe, and he was on his way for the runs, and now he's on his way back to the pavilion.
22:5526 from just 31 ball space.
23:03141 for four, now England.
23:05The new batsman coming in.
23:07This is Alex Stewart.
23:11Oh, must be gone, if he hits.
23:19Dear me.
23:22Could mark that down as a slight error of judgment.
23:27Well, it may have been a slight error of judgment on Alex Stewart's part, but it was a brilliant piece of fielding by the bowler.
23:33I mean, Jadeja just followed through and made Alex Stewart look a little bit silly.
23:40Embarrassed him in the end, you see.
23:41Follows through, picks it up left-handed, turns, and never in doubt about missing the stumps.
23:47And that really is an embarrassing way to get run out.
23:50There's never a good way to get run out, but that really did leave Alex Stewart stranded.
23:56Stewart run out for three from six balls faced, and he picked one of the better fielders in the Indian side.
24:07And that's a pleasure out at cover and cover point.
24:11It's outstanding, and off his own volley.
24:14147 for five, and it puts a different complexion on things.
24:20England moving along very well there when Hick and Thorpe were sharing that partnership.
24:25Suddenly, Thorpe has gone, and Stewart also.
24:29And now, Ronnie Rani has come out to join Graham Hick.
24:42It's a fierce stroke around the offside.
24:47Managed to cut off two runs there.
24:51Good fielding.
24:53And 50 for Graham Hick.
24:57England need a substantial innings from him.
24:59They've got it so far.
25:01They're 166 for five.
25:09That's a cracking shot.
25:10It's gone square.
25:13Brilliant stop.
25:22Throws all around the ground.
25:26Super stop at the boundary.
25:27Manjraka.
25:34The kind of fielding the Indians need to do.
25:36Stop every run in the field because it could be so crucial in the end.
25:42Manjraka throwing himself there.
25:46That's a fine shot.
25:47Really feel the body getting right the way into that.
25:52Another good stop by Sidhu.
25:57Good contest out there at the moment.
25:58Well, just seeing him for the first time, he comes across as a busy little player as Ronnie Rani.
26:05Always on the lookout for runs.
26:08Runs hard.
26:09That's in the air.
26:19Oh!
26:21Brilliant catch.
26:23Brassett is the catcher.
26:24And that went flat.
26:27It went hard and it might well have carried the boundary.
26:31He's plucked it out of the air.
26:32Wonderful catch.
26:33Well, this is a big wicket for India.
26:39Short ball from Kumlip.
26:40Pulled around by Ronnie Rani.
26:41But Venkatesh, Prasad, keeping his eyes on the ball and taking a brilliant catch.
26:46Never easy to pick, but making no mistake on that occasion.
26:49A brave effort by Ronnie Rani.
26:5511 runs he scored.
26:56Of 13 balls, and that's exactly the tempo that England required.
27:02176 for 6.
27:04So Rani goes for 11.
27:06And Mark Elam is out there now joining Graham Hick.
27:19That's off the pad, but runs will come from this.
27:23It's gone very fine.
27:24Quite a chase.
27:25Oops.
27:29Three runs.
27:33That's well run by Elam.
27:35Not so well fielded by Srinath.
27:43Oh!
27:44Straight over the top.
27:47We've seen the ball dart about off the seam.
27:49All the morning.
27:50Some have left the bat.
27:51That one cut through and went straight over the top of the stumps.
27:56Now this is the length.
27:57Javagal Srinath should be looking to bowl.
27:59Again, pitching it up.
28:00Look at the movement he gets.
28:01Just cuts back in a long way over the middle stump.
28:09It's quite possible to lose wickets quickly.
28:13It's also a decent pitch to play some strokes on.
28:19Like that.
28:21Crashing shot.
28:26Well, Mark Elam will feel a lot better now.
28:28It's his first international match.
28:30Nothing better than feeling the ball hit the middle of the bat and race away for four.
28:35Well, that's the best shot he's played in this inning so far.
28:39He gets a little bit of width outside that off stump.
28:43Waits on it.
28:45And cuts it behind point.
28:47Paris Mamre has been guilty.
28:49A few occasions to give the batsman the width.
28:52Another big hit.
29:00And that's four.
29:02That's between the two men down there.
29:04Behind square on the next side.
29:08Just charging down the pitch by Mark Elam has just unsettled Prasad.
29:12And he's struggling to keep his length in line.
29:17Again, swinging it on the onside.
29:18And this time he's found the gap.
29:20Bisecting the two fielders in the deep there.
29:22The man at fine leg and long leg.
29:25And another welcome boundary for Mark Elam.
29:3242nd over.
29:3367 not out.
29:34Graham Hick.
29:35Ole Miss field again.
29:41The ground fielding has been a little disappointing by India.
29:45Rathor is the fielder out there.
29:47Instead of one, it's three.
29:56Vikram Rathor hasn't had a very good day in the field.
29:58He dropped a catch early on.
30:00The very first over of Alistair Brown.
30:02And here just lifting his head up.
30:03Taking his eyes off the ball.
30:06And allowing the England batsman two extra runs.
30:20All the way.
30:21That's into space at mid-wicket.
30:25No one anywhere near it.
30:27So four more runs to Graham Hick.
30:28Yes, I think he'd made up his mind here that anything short, he was going to get outside and pull it.
30:39From the Indian point of view, they must pitch the ball up.
30:42You can set some kind of decent feels if the ball was pitched up.
30:45And they've had success by pitching the ball up, not by pitching it short.
30:49Skied up in the air.
31:03I don't think Rathor's going to get back to it.
31:05And he doesn't.
31:06Vikram Rathor, the man trying desperately to get back from extra cover.
31:12He's had a bit of a mixed day in the field.
31:13Started with a drop catch in the first over.
31:15That was at second slip, and he couldn't get to this one.
31:19Well, this is a bit of a teaser here.
31:21It encourages him to go for it, but he never quite really gets there.
31:25It's up a long way, and it just bisected the man on the deep cover boundary.
31:39That's edged fine.
31:43And the two runs bringing up the 50 partnership for Graham Hick and Mark Elan.
31:55And it's a partnership which so far has kept England on track after a few problems in the middle order.
32:21Mark Elan will come back again for two.
32:24Made up his mind early.
32:25Well, the umpire's asking the question.
32:30Peter Willey is the man at the pavilion end who signalled for the assistance of Chris Balderston, who is the third umpire today.
32:39Well, I think that's right and sensible.
32:41It makes common sense to send for the third umpire and the TV replays,
32:45but young Elam is pretty quick between the wickets, and I thought he'd made it.
32:51Because he's a good athlete.
32:52It's tight.
32:58It's tight.
33:02It's tight is this.
33:05Well, he might not have made it there.
33:06The back's just about on the line, or maybe just short.
33:09The line belongs to the bowler, or the fielder taking the ball.
33:16And it looks as if he might be out by about an inch or so.
33:20Chris Balderston has the option to give the benefit to the batsman.
33:24The benefit of any doubt, and that's what he's done.
33:27The green light comes on, which means that Mark Elam will stay at the crease.
33:30That's a fine shot from Elam.
33:43Long, long chase from deep cover.
33:46And Prasad couldn't make it.
33:54He just had one or two lapses in there, fielding.
33:57The Indians really could have done with just a little bit of improvement.
34:03Here it wanted a bit of football.
34:05Wanted a foot to the ball, rather than bending down in this cold weather.
34:10If he stuck his foot there, he would have saved it.
34:12My word, that's a huge shot.
34:21It's got a clear Prasad, and it does.
34:38And a big, big hit by Mark Elam.
34:42Prasad's a tall man out there at deep mid-wicket.
34:48And again.
34:52Absolutely no doubt about that one.
34:56Successive sixes for Mark Elam.
35:04Well, the second hit was even better.
35:06He hit it really sweetly.
35:08Right over long on.
35:12Well, that was almost wide.
35:26Mark Elam bringing up the 2.50.
35:29For England.
35:30Pass ball in.
35:38And Il Cumble strikes with the first ball of his last over.
35:46Mark Elam, the man gone.
35:47He's gone for 40.
35:48But they've come in quick time and provided useful impetus for this England innings.
35:57He's almost Yorked himself here, trying to half-volley it.
36:01But it was a brilliant little cameo innings.
36:03Really got some momentum going.
36:06And he's getting a very good round of applause.
36:0940 there in 34 balls.
36:12And he's putting them in a pretty strong position after a little bit of a wobble in the middle order.
36:17Chris Lewis is the new batsman.
36:24A very handy man to have coming in at number nine.
36:29England having decided to play as many all-rounders as possible in this first one-day international.
36:34And that's been hit mightily.
36:50Chris Lewis got himself into a slightly awkward position.
36:54But made wonderful contact.
36:59Well, he was trying to get down the pitch to the bowling.
37:02But it was short of a length outside of the stump.
37:04And he just stood up and clubbed it.
37:07It was a terrific strike.
37:14Beautifully picked up.
37:17That's one bounce and over the boundary.
37:28Poor delivery, this.
37:29Really.
37:30He's got an offside field.
37:32Nobody at deep mid-wicket.
37:33And he bowls it straight.
37:35This stage of the innings, the batsmen are going to look for that mid-wicket area.
37:38Get outside the line of the ball.
37:40And just whip it away.
37:45That's lofted.
37:47A long, long way in the sky.
37:48Mandraker is round there and takes the catch.
37:52Judged it very well indeed, Sanjay Mandraker.
37:54Had to run round about 20, 25 yards to get underneath it.
38:00And Graham Hick is out for 91.
38:02Well, it was a splendid innings by Graham Hick.
38:12Just trying to get inside the ball and hit it through the offside in the air.
38:16He got under it a bit too much.
38:17So it stayed up a long time and allowed the field to run round and judge it beautifully.
38:23But no complaints without excellent innings, particularly when England were wobbling a little bit in the middle of the order.
38:30He's held it all together.
38:31And it's a pity, in a way, that he didn't make his century.
38:43So England, eight down now for 276.
38:47With eight balls of this innings remaining.
38:51That did go a long way up.
38:53But Mandraker did well.
38:55He kept his eyes on the ball all the way through.
38:59Timed the catch nicely.
39:01And just made absolutely sure that it didn't spill out again.
39:17New batsman is Dominic Cork.
39:24And he's dropped it.
39:31Marne Bray, the culprit, down at long off.
39:39And Chris Lewis, the beneficiary.
39:43Seemed to get there nice and comfortably.
39:46And did most things right, apart from catch it.
39:49Swatted towards deep square leg.
40:03And that's going to be close too.
40:04Good piece of work from Sanjay Mandraker again.
40:06I think some of the Indian, sorry, the English sections of the crowd might be worried that there was a foot over at the wrong time here.
40:26Question is, is that foot touching the rope?
40:30Or not?
40:31This will give us another idea.
40:36And I think he's fine.
40:37Two more.
40:48And a wild throw.
40:49Dominic Cork just checking to see if there was a chance of another to make it three.
40:56Never really on though.
40:56That's a bad delivery.
41:21And although Chris Lewis didn't quite middle that, he managed to get it just wide again with the man who was in the circle on the line of longlegs.
41:33So four more.
41:37Linnea have been penalised for bowling short.
41:40I'm surprised that they haven't pitched it up a lot more.
41:44See, down, halfway down the pitch.
41:47You're going to get punished very severely if you do that in the last few overs.
41:51Short again, but this time no contact with the bats.
42:05And the England innings finishes on 291 for eight.
42:13Well, Alistair Brown did his bit up front there.
42:16Dashing 37, just what was required of him.
42:18But the main pillar of strength really was Graham Hick, who played very sensibly, never took unrealistic chances, and then flourished towards the end.
42:26Very unlucky not to get a century.
42:2791 for him.
42:29And an excellent partnership with young Mark Elam.
42:31What a splendid debut he made.
42:33Chris Lewis was useful.
42:3429 not out.
42:35And the score 291 for eight.
42:37Best by far of the Indian bowlers was Anil Kumble, 10 overs, 2 for 29.
42:44There were wickets for Mamre.
42:45He got a couple, but all expensively in Srinath and Prasad.
42:48Jadeja, too, picked up his wicket, 1 for 29, off five.
42:52So, India required 292 runs to win.
42:57They have all 50 overs in which to do it.
42:59And the run rate required 5.84 runs per over.
43:03So, we'll join India's innings now with a fourth ball of the first over.
43:07Cork is bowling to Tendulkar.
43:09The score, three for nought.
43:10A lovely wristy shot here from Tendulkar.
43:28Just see there how he closes the face of the blade at the very last moment.
43:33And gets the placement absolutely right.
43:35This match could well be decided in these first 15 overs.
43:38Tendulkar often has got India off to a flying start.
43:40Two classic strokes in the sofa from Tendulkar.
43:57Well, the first boundary was a fine shot, but this is an even better shot.
44:02Dominic Kork again straying on leg stump.
44:05Tendulkar in lovely position.
44:07Clip it off his pads.
44:09Fast square leg.
44:10Tendulkar in lovely position.
44:11Yeah.
44:20And once again.
44:22So it's three times Kork is straight on to the pads of Sashin Tendulkar.
44:28And three times he's been put away.
44:30Beautiful wristy stroke
44:45We've seen nothing better than that
44:48All year we're only into
44:50The second stanza of
44:52First limited overs match
44:53Already the wristy strokes
44:56On the onside are something to behold
44:58Again a wonderful piece of timing
45:01For his last boundary
45:02Fourth boundary in all
45:03Look how late he plays it
45:05Waits for the ball to come on to bat
45:07Tracking stroke
45:16Lewis decided to test him with the bouncer
45:18He's hit it straight over the top
45:20Of square leg and into the crowd
45:22Now this really is a magnificent shot
45:28Picks it up so quickly
45:30Gets into wonderful position
45:31Hits it right off the center of the blade
45:34Over the square leg fence for six
45:36Peter Martin
45:38Is coming on at the Vauxhall end
45:42To take over from Dominic Cork
45:43Because two overs have cost twenty
45:45And straight away Martin also is on the leg stump
46:04Really paying the penalty for this
46:11And they should too
46:12But the batsmen are taking full advantage of it
46:14Well this is not very good bowling by England so far
46:17Most of the Indian batsmen
46:19Very strong on anything
46:20Around leg stump
46:21And here Vikram Ratho having no problem
46:23In dispatching this one
46:24To the mid wicket fence
46:25Ah good shot
46:41Lovely authentic extra cover drive
46:51This is reminiscent of the way
46:53The Sri Lankans played against the Australians
46:56Throughout the last summer
46:57Including the World Cup
46:58Well this is a cracking start by the Indians
47:01Right up there in the slot
47:02For the off drive
47:04And beautifully played by Vikram Ratho
47:05Safe
47:11Just out of the reach
47:13Of the man at cover
47:14Michael Atherton the skipper
47:17And it's gone for another four
47:19Well this one was in the air
47:25Vikram Ratho looking to drive it
47:28Through the offside
47:29Trying to hit the ball
47:33On the up
47:33Ball just
47:36Going wide of Mike Atherton
47:38Diving to his left
47:39And able to stop it
47:40Another boundary
47:41For India
47:42It's just out of reach of mid on
47:48It's a long chase for Alistair Brown
47:50That is brilliant stuff
47:58India faced with a very big run chase
48:01292 they need for victory
48:03And they've moved to 52 now
48:06And we've finished
48:08Just five overs
48:10There's 31 balls in all
48:12Ah
48:18Well done
48:19That score ball
48:20First one he's got up there
48:22In the slot
48:22And
48:24Ratho
48:25Knew that he was in trouble
48:27He just kept walking
48:28Empire's finger went up
48:30Partnership was broken
48:3254 for one
48:33Ratho is gone
48:35And Tanduka still there
48:36On 28
48:37Just what the doctor ordered
48:41As far as England were concerned
48:42This one over pitched
48:43From Chris Lewis
48:45And Vikram Ratho
48:46Looking to play across the line
48:47Playing all over it
48:48And got Plum in front
48:5054 for one
49:05But I thought the man out
49:06OBW to Lewis
49:074'23
49:09Nduka 28
49:10And
49:11Indians are adopting a new method here
49:20They're sending in Anil Kumblay
49:22Who's a good strong hitter
49:23Change of playing conditions
49:26Means that
49:27There's a field restriction
49:31For the first 15 overs
49:32The batsman can take advantage
49:33Of that
49:34Well this is the wicket
49:40Of Vikram Ratho
49:40Playing all over it
49:42Across the line
49:43And that could have hit
49:44Middle stump
49:44I think he's pleased
50:00Gone
50:04Nicely caught
50:05Good catch
50:07That was sharp
50:08Went past
50:09Kumblay's gone
50:10The experiment is missed out here
50:12Tanduka remains
50:14At the non-striker's end
50:16Two wickets down now
50:17With Hick taking that catch
50:19Off Lewis
50:20Well an ambitious shot here
50:23From Anil Kumblay
50:24Looking to drive over mid-off
50:27Getting the outside edge
50:28And Graham Hick
50:29Is a very good slip fielder
50:31He doesn't make many mistakes
50:32And the second wicket
50:33Gone for India
50:3454 for 2
50:45Ratho out for 23
50:48Kumblay without scoring
50:49Avshad Sidhu
50:57Is the new batsman
50:59Comes out to join
51:00Tanduka
51:01Who's on 28
51:02LBW
51:09Tanduka goes
51:12Trying to hit the ball
51:13Down the ground
51:14And Peter Martin
51:15Has struck
51:15Empire Julian
51:20At the Vauxhall end
51:22Has given Tanduka
51:23LBW
51:24To Martin
51:25And it's now
51:2656 for 3
51:28Well he'll be disappointed
51:29With this shot
51:30Because he was an excellent nick
51:31Here looking to hit it
51:32Over mid-on
51:33And the ball
51:34Doing one thought
51:35From here
51:36Just a bit too much
51:37So rather unlucky
51:38To be given out
51:39Leg before wicket
51:39But India lose
51:41The third wicket
51:4156 runs on the board
51:4356 for 3
51:52New man
51:53Coming in now
51:54As the skipper
51:55Of the Indian side
51:56Muhammad
51:56Asruddin
51:57He's on 0
52:01And so is
52:02Sidhu
52:02Got him
52:16Got him
52:30Straight through
52:31Straight through
52:31See wickets for Lewis
52:32Well excellent bowling by Chris Lewis
52:44To keep the ball up to the bat
52:46I've been saying all day
52:48This pitch will move better
52:49And give you more chances
52:50Of getting wickets
52:51If you're prepared to pitch it up
52:53But the footwork was really poor
52:54Sidhu
52:55Very poor footwork there
52:58Got stuck in the crease
52:59Never got forward
53:00Well if you watch the footwork here
53:12The feet are stuck on the bat
53:14Increase
53:15They didn't really go anywhere
53:16Watch the feet here
53:17The little shuffle
53:18And then he pulls the foot back
53:21Neither forward or back
53:23Caught in two mines
53:25And he paid the penalty
53:26Badraker
53:2872 matches
53:2968 at Ings
53:30And the average
53:33Of 34
53:34Balls in
53:42Lewis gets through again
53:44Mandraker goes this time
53:45Well what a comeback
53:48For Chris Lewis
53:49He's kept the ball
53:50Well up to the bat
53:51That's been the secret
53:52We've seen other fast bowlers
53:54Get carved around the ground
53:56Today at the oval
53:57But the ball
53:58Pitched well up to the bat
53:59And does it a little bit
54:00It's all over
54:01And this is how Mandraker's gone
54:02Yeah a little inside edge there
54:05He's one of their technically
54:06Best players
54:08Good technique
54:10But he's kept the ball up
54:11Chris Lewis
54:12Quite a bit of pace
54:13And Jamin
54:14And Jamin
54:18And if they were in trouble
54:22Before now
54:23They've got a really big hole
54:25To get out of
54:2568 for 5
54:2768 for 5
54:32New batsman
54:32And Jodeja
54:39A lovely shot off the mark
54:41Beautiful
54:43Jodeja went out there
54:45Staring at the dark sky
54:47Suggesting perhaps
54:48That the light was not too good
54:49And then
54:51First ball
54:51Creamed it to the covers
54:52All the applause
55:05Is for Chris Lewis
55:05He's
55:06Taking 4 wickets
55:08That was the 4th
55:09That was Mandraker
55:10Umpires
55:14Ray Julian
55:15And Peter Willey
55:17Then conferred
55:18They looked up
55:19Towards the rather dark clouds
55:20And just ahead of
55:22Some rather heavy rain
55:24The covers are pushed on
55:25The players left
55:26And the play was not
55:28Allowed to continue
55:30For 2 whole hours
55:32And when they did resume
55:36Jodeja was hit on the hand
55:37Not once
55:38But twice
55:39And extremely painfully too
55:41And that was a signal
55:43For the umpires
55:44To look at the light
55:45And decide
55:46That the light was really bad
55:47We'd seen 23 runs added
55:50In 20 minutes play
55:51So the situation
55:55At the end of the day
55:56England in a strong position
55:57291 for 8
55:58And India rather struggling
55:59After a partnership
55:59At the start of
56:0054 for 1
56:01They slumped at 96 for 5
56:04And they need
56:04196 more runs to win
56:06Well afterwards
56:07I spoke to the best bats
56:08Of the day
56:09Graham Hick
56:10Graham, you looked in great form today
56:11But there was quite a bit
56:12In the pitch for the bowlers
56:13Yeah, all the way through the innings
56:15It swung around quite a bit
56:17And the odd one stood up
56:18But early on
56:19There was certainly a bit there
56:21For the bowler
56:21In the end
56:23England got quite a decent total
56:25But at one stage
56:26It didn't look quite so promising
56:27Yeah, I know
56:28While we were out there
56:28We were sort of trying to think
56:29Of what might be a good target
56:31To try and post
56:31So at least we'd have something
56:32To bowl at
56:33If we bowl well
56:34And we were sort of
56:35At one stage thinking
56:36Maybe 230, 240
56:37If we could get there
56:38But so the last 15
56:40Went well
56:41The chaps that came in
56:42Really pushed it up
56:44And hit some big shots
56:45You had a very good partnership
56:47Towards the end
56:48With young Mark Elam
56:49What was it like
56:49To play with young blood
56:51Around you
56:51Yeah, it's different
56:52I mean I've never
56:53Obviously there's a few people
56:55Who've just never
56:55Bat with them before
56:56So you're sort of
56:57Trying to form
56:58Sort of batting relationships
57:00In a way
57:00You know
57:00Just work out how they're
57:01Trying to find their singles
57:03Or whatever
57:04But yeah, he played
57:05He played really well
57:06I mean he
57:06He changed our target
57:08From 230
57:09To what it was
57:10Really
57:11It was a magnificent innings
57:12And did he look to you
57:13For some advice
57:13Out there in the middle
57:14I couldn't really give him to
57:15He was hitting the ball
57:16A lot better than I was
57:18At one stage
57:20When he was
57:20You know
57:21He was striking really well
57:22And I was just
57:22Concentrating on
57:23Trying to bat through
57:24And if I got a bad ball
57:25Get rid of it
57:26But while he was going
57:27I was trying to see
57:28If I could give him the strike
57:29Because he was hitting the ball
57:30So clean
57:30Now can India
57:31Get these runs
57:32And win the match?
57:34Yeah, I think
57:34I mean obviously
57:34They've lost five wickets
57:36Which is very much
57:37In our favour
57:37But they've got two
57:39Very good batters
57:39In there at the moment
57:40And I think
57:41If one or two
57:42If both of them
57:42Or one of them
57:43Plays a really big role
57:44Then there's a chance
57:48I mean they've got off
57:48To a good start
57:50And they're sort of
57:51Sitting at 6, 7
57:52And over
57:52I don't know what
57:53It's pretty high
57:54So it's come down
57:55To a bit of a Sunday league game
57:56But obviously
57:57They've only got the five wickets
57:58In hand
57:58And was the light
57:59Really bad at the end
58:00Well I was happy to be fielding
58:03In it
58:03Put it that way
58:04I don't know if I'd like
58:07To have been batting
58:07In it
58:07But it's a difficult situation
58:09When you've got a crowd
58:10I suppose
58:10And things like that
58:11But yeah
58:12It was alright to field in
58:13Well we're hoping for
58:16Fine weather at the Oval
58:17Tomorrow
58:17And if that's so
58:18Then we'll show you
58:19The highlights
58:19To the conclusion
58:20Of this first one
58:21International
58:21Late tomorrow night
58:23From us all at the Oval
58:24Good evening
