00:26was really cool um and i was hoping he was gonna you know but he told a fun story before

00:32the show started about those helicopters coming by his place which was a lot of fun but yeah it was

00:38cool event yeah well uh good to see you man you were on that show you've done a late night

00:43you've played shows at naper god see and now and now you're with me so your your stock is is

00:49downward just a little bit but we'll try to i'll give you a nice plug here for uh the royal

00:54theater coming up on september 11th of course the day of comedy on september 11th yeah you always got
01:01to do a comedy show on that day for sure uh and it's such a great day to fly as
01:06well so what a
01:07blessing i'll be uh i'll be flying in that day but yeah i'm excited to come back i uh i've
01:13done uh
01:14caesar's palace twice in detroit uh i uh which you know i don't know how many people could say that
01:20got my netflix special out that's nostalgic um which is uh the numbers are rocking on that so
01:26excited to come to royal oak uh music theater i uh great place for comedy and so uh yeah man

01:33forward to it yeah and you you uh you released nostalgic on my birthday so thank you that was
01:38like a nice birthday gift yeah yeah yeah i did i looked long and hard i was trying to find

01:43you're in your birthday landed on the perfect spot so i was like let's go ahead and follow through with
01:47it just do it on that that day right there yeah i appreciate that no i'm still baffled by the

01:54that's right yeah you were there at the thing you know why because they never tell you who's going to
01:58be there yeah yeah and another thing i mean this could not sound any worse there's there's no worse
02:04thing than when you uh talk to somebody and you have to tell them you were on a show but

02:09the listeners to know uh i mean i put my whole foot into that audience i mean i ripped them

02:15uh and and i was the only one that was pretty much doing straight up comedy uh we had some
02:20wild acts uh uh i didn't come off the stage into the crowd just jokes and uh and i and

02:27pretty good the fact that you didn't remember me is wild uh but we'll just uh if it helps your

02:33then we'll just ride that lightning no i'll tell you what man no you were great that night as a
02:38matter
02:38of fact uh you headlined so i mean there you go there yep yep closed it closed it out for

02:43followed some some very funny guys a good friend of mine chris porter had a killer killer set so
02:50yeah it's always it's always a fun night with those guys i'm excited to be in nashville uh just a
02:55cool
02:55city overall um honestly so yeah yeah was that that wasn't the first time you played the rhyming was it
03:00no no that uh i've been there a few times i've been lucky to come through there what a cool

03:05um just right off of broadway there uh so yeah it's always fun to do the rhyming with that kind

03:11the all the wood and the pew kind of feeling it's it's an interesting joint it's a definitely
03:16historical yeah i went with rock the one time and we saw brad williams there oh sick yeah brad's
03:23great man yeah it's a great place for any type of i mean you know of course music is what
03:27made its name
03:28but also a killer place to watch comedy now you're gonna be i don't know if you want to talk
03:32about
03:32this but you're gonna be relocating down there what's the reason for that i had a kid man just trying
03:38you know it's gonna be my first real decision that i'm making for the family here as a comedian
03:43and as a you know an entertainer you can be a little selfish in your journey and uh so i
03:48came
03:48up to new york city to kind of prove it to myself and prove to other people uh that i'm
03:53funny everywhere
03:54because sometimes when you have a southern accent they try to put you in a box and so i had
03:58to show
03:58them that i crush crowds regardless of where they're at so i came up here i did that for a
04:02year and a half
04:03i work at the cellar a good bit so now i'm ready to put my roots down i grew up
04:0790 miles south of
04:08nashville um and nashville's right in the middle of the country good place to travel out of there's
04:14a reason uh why you know 75 percent of the tour buses come out of nashville it's a pretty central
04:20location yeah i see that tour bus uh place it's uh north of nashville if i'm not mistaken i write
04:25along uh yeah five or something like that i drive by it yeah so i've never been to alabama before
04:30actually i take that back uh one time i was in prospect tennessee and i missed the exit so i
04:34did
04:35go into alabama once but uh but why why why did you go up to new york just because of
04:40the comedy
04:41thing i mean it doesn't sound like a place that a guy from alabama would want to go i mean
04:45i grew up
04:45in buffalo and i don't want to go to new york no i get that i mean it was truly
04:49just a business move
04:51i mean could you imagine if i said it was for quality of life i mean that wouldn't make any
04:55sense
04:55but like i said when you have this accent in life on stage people try to put you in a
05:00box all the
05:01time they think they got you pretty pinned so okay i lived in denver for nine years and then i
05:06moved
05:06here just to show people that i'm you know i'm not up there doing some you know pitchfork and overall
05:12type comedy i'm like bill burr raised in the woods your boy's moving up there i've got a certain pace
05:18i'm not just talking about things that somebody who might have grown up in a metropolitan area wouldn't
05:23understand um you know and so i just wanted to show my range and so came here to the cellar

05:29out you know 20 25 clips that have gone viral um so it was just a business trip nobody told
05:35me to
05:35come here the industry didn't tell me to come here this was just to prove to people because i know
05:40you
05:40know i mean you got to have a little chip on your shoulder in comedy and i know that you
05:44know i'm i'm
05:45not just like some slow cocky you know talking like hay bale kicking comment comedian and new york was
05:51was a way for me to prove that yeah it sounds it sounds you you brought that up a couple
05:55times so
05:55it sounds like maybe at the and maybe at the beginning of your career that was you you kind of
05:58were you labeled as that or yeah yeah well i mean it's you know like i start off my act
06:03by kind of
06:04this this accent a lot of people try to do things with it i mean i i say it in
06:09my act i catch a lot

06:22dude but that's not my whole story i've got the type of comedy that people from anywhere um can
06:28enjoy it's not like i'm going to get up there and do a bit about gardening squash and lose the
06:32crowd
06:32you know it's it's pretty down the middle stuff for everybody so i i guess i'm a little uh you
06:38know
06:38conscious and self-conscious of that so i always try to let audiences know because somebody will come in
06:42they'll be listening to this and they'll hear my accent and they'll go oh that ain't for me
06:46and it's like no big dog it might be uh it might be you just got to give me a
06:51minute yeah yeah that's
06:52right so i i usually interview bands that's that's like kind of like the the the the people i interview
06:58the most and i ask them sometimes like what is it like to drop a record so what is it
07:01like to drop
07:01a netflix special well you learn why people complain about press tours sometimes i've never done a
07:09real one and so it's endless press yeah uh and it's a good thing and it's and it's an absolutely
07:16exhausting thing um but it's great i mean you get a punch in the arm this netflix special is doing
07:21great it was in the top 10 the first week the numbers are killing just in the comedy world humble
07:26is the word i'm not allowed to get on instagram and do what i want to do after a couple
07:31cups of
07:31coffee and tell everybody that my netflix special is doing better than 90 of your favorite
07:36comedians uh you just got to kind of play it close to the vest but the special is killing it
07:41uh people enjoy it it's extremely relatable um i'm not wasting your time there's no real drop off
07:47in the 57 minutes i build throughout the set and by the end of it we're to the moon so
07:52it's something
07:53i'm i'm really proud of it i mean my my most daunting task now and i've got a good jump
07:58on it is to
07:58come up with something even better because the theater tour like when i come through royal oak music
08:03theater that'll all be a brand new 100 new hour uh with uh new stuff i'll be talking about so
08:09that's
08:09what's next on the agenda yeah sometimes i ask the bands i go what's harder uh making the record or
08:14talking about it so i guess yeah no you're exactly right you're exactly right yeah so um have you been
08:21to how many waffle houses have you been to man it'd be pretty uh on the spectrum if i had
08:28a real number
08:29but uh it's quite a bit i mean in the thousands i mean i i've been going to waffle house
08:35since i was
08:35a babe like my entire my entire life it was my grand my great grandfather uh it was his favorite
08:42place that's kind of where i fell in love with it it was the only place he would eat out
08:46to eat like
08:46go out to eat because he could watch him cook it um and he wanted that he wanted to watch
08:51there is no
08:51hiding inside of a waffle house you get to watch that whole meal get made and it's you know quality
08:57products you know it's real eggs no eggs out of a carton you got real potatoes um and so yeah
09:02it's
09:03a diner that uh that i love i miss i'm excited to get back down towards it now yeah because
09:08my wife
09:08whenever we travel she wants to go to cracker barrel or walmart and they're all the same but she
09:12wants to see she wants to see ones in different cities it's like is it the same thing with you
09:18yeah yeah yeah i mean it's not to see it in a different city it's really just it's what i
09:23prefer to
09:23eat it's one of the more consistent meals you know and this is what when i talk about waffle
09:28house and it's sometimes people i feel like from other places they hear me they're like yeah of
09:32course you know this is a homer talking about anthony bourdain has a has an episode where he went to
09:37waffle house and he wants to root against it and he can't he ends up being like waffle house is
09:43a
09:43special place and he highlights some things that really uh that i really love about it so i always
09:48tell people you don't have to take my word for it go on youtube watch the anthony bourdain
09:52waffle house episode and watch a man that wanted to root against it have his mind changed in real
09:58time now a few weeks ago you're also out there with um with with seth rollins uh was that the
10:03first time you met him first time i've met seth rollins i'm gonna tell you something about me
10:09i'm not a wrestling fan and i had no idea that seth rollins had the draw that he has my
10:15messages
10:15went nuts i mean they were like i can't believe you're hanging out with seth rollins he's the
10:20coolest dude ever i go yeah he's pretty nice uh you know i i didn't know anything about seth
10:26rollins definitely knew about uh i was on that same show with uh menteo uh the linebacker from
10:32notre dame definitely knew a little bit about his history but uh didn't know a lot about seth
10:36rollins didn't not a wrestling not a wrestling guy i'm one of those that that little group that in
10:42like 1991 i found out that jake the snake was not being was not a real wrestler and i jumped
10:48ship
10:50so did you see uh at the end of the uh comedy jam in nashville did you see
10:54that monstrous dude stand up and walk towards the stage that was braun strowman
11:01oh my goodness did you see no i did not no i never i did not see him yeah he's
11:06friends with porter as
11:07well and i met him before and i've known chris for a few years and i ended up hooking up
11:12with him
11:12later on that night and then uh and then i took my friend jared and uh him and uh zach
11:16from shinedown
11:17did his tv show the next day he's got this show called everything on the menu where they eat
11:21everything on the menu oh wow my gosh no that sounds like a lot of fun well yeah yeah maybe
11:28he could get
11:29you on this show maybe i can get you on that show one time yeah yeah yeah that i mean
11:33that that's what
11:34would have to help your ego even more now you're getting me on shows i mean this has gotten this

11:39crazy i apologize you know my friend jared goes i love this guy i'd never seen you before so that's
11:46i apologize and no no it's all good it's all good no but now i'm starting to see you all
11:51over the
11:51place you're popping up in my feed and everything but uh the running hot tour royal oak music theater
11:56on september 11th of course the netflix special is out right now called nostalgic i watch that by the
12:01way you shot that uh in your hometown it was where did you have friends and family there or anything
12:06like that oh yeah i mean for sure i mean i tell a story about calling the house it's a
12:11pretty viral
12:11bit from the special about how you'd have to talk to a parent before you call the house and i
12:16reference
12:16this guy jeff turner i mean jeff turner's real name is tom turner and his daughter is hannah turner
12:22and she was my high school sweetheart and they were in attendance for sure you know stuff like that
12:27i don't go to coffee shops and make up things uh you know i i see things i say things
12:33so all that
12:34stuff comes from a real place um so yeah family and friends fans birmingham's was a nice central
12:40location you could drive in from atlanta you could drive in from different parts and it wasn't too far
12:45of a drive in the lyric theater and birmingham is top notch so it all turned out great yeah do

12:50know the guys from uh brother caner from there you know them no yeah yeah i don't know that but

12:55of them yeah yeah absolutely yeah with uh damon and all those guys well listen derek we'll let
