00:39He didn't handle it well. Let me just say it like that.
00:43Nancy started getting really worried. She's like, I'm really worried for Chris.
00:47I just had this really bad feeling.
00:49We have more for you now on a developing story in Fayette County.
00:52The deaths of a pro wrestler and his family.
00:55In the immediate wake of Chris Benoit's death,
00:57the world is desperately searching for answers.
01:01What comes to light goes beyond anything anyone could imagine.
01:05People just couldn't believe it. Couldn't fathom that something like that could happen.
01:09It can't be real. Like, where's my nephew?
01:12That can't have happened because the person that I knew would not do this horrific thing.
01:18But I think this is going to be gigantic. This will affect WWE.
01:22Well, the question is, was he on steroids at this time?
01:24Did the blows to the head Benoit received in the wrestling ring fundamentally change his brain?
01:31It really, really was the darkest time of my life.
01:56Fayette County, Georgia, it's a laid-back community. It's more of a family atmosphere.
02:02Not a whole lot of crime. It's pretty peaceful.
02:06My name is Larry Alden. I was with Fayette County Sheriff's Office.
02:10I was a lieutenant in charge of the shift that was working the day of the Benoit incident.
02:14I had been a detective for about 15 or 20 years.
02:18I'd probably see Chris Benoit once or twice a week at the gym, which was right in the middle of
02:23Fayetteville.
02:24He didn't talk a lot, and he was pretty focused on getting his workout in.
02:30I'd never heard anything about him.
02:31I didn't even know where he lived at until the call came out on the radio that day.
02:35My name is Dennis Figg, and I run the security for World Wrestling, and one of our wrestlers that lives
02:40down there is Missing.
02:41And what's his name?
02:44Chris Benoit.
02:45Okay, and he's a wrestler?
02:47Yes, he's a very religious gentleman, and yesterday he was supposed to show up at a pay-per-view and
02:52never got on the plane, never showed up.
02:54It's out of character for him.
02:56All right, we'll go ahead and send somebody out there to check on him if you want to call us
03:01back in like 45 minutes or so.
03:03If he's there, we'll tell him to give you a call.
03:07I was in my patrol car just riding around the county, and it was pretty close to the area when
03:13the call went out.
03:15I wasn't thinking of anything other than a welfare check where maybe he was sick, maybe drunk, didn't really know
03:21what.
03:21But I pulled up on the scene about the time the neighbor was walking over, and I walked up to
03:26them, and I asked if she had seen Mr. Benoit or anybody.
03:31And she said, it's been three or four days since I've seen anybody over there.
03:35There was two large canines in the yard.
03:38If I remember correctly, they were German shepherds.
03:41We asked her if there was any place she could put the dogs at so we could go up there
03:45and do the welfare check.
03:47And she said, oh, yeah, me and the dogs get along great.
03:49I feed them whenever they're out of town.
03:53And she jumped the fence, dogs right there with her.
03:56She walked them in there, never had to take a hold to them.
03:59It was taking a little longer than I thought it should take, but then she came running out the door,
04:04screaming that Daniel's dead, Daniel's dead.
04:09I went from just being a regular welfare check, okay, we've got something more serious here.
04:21We crossed the fence at that time, myself and Deputy Mundy, and we made entry through the side door, which
04:26she had left open.
04:28We drew our weapons, not knowing what we were going to come upon.
04:33It was daylight, and they had plenty of windows in the house.
04:36So you had a lot of light coming in.
04:38There was an odor in the house.
04:41And I looked over at Deputy Mundy and said, something is dead in here.
04:47There was a set of stairs going up to a bedroom.
04:49So we went up those steps, and sure enough, that's where the juvenile child was at, laying in bed.
04:56I noticed the child was laying on the bed, face down.
04:59Deputy Mundy said, do we need to start CPR?
05:01And I said, no.
05:03He'd passed away.
05:05When we started clearing all the different rooms and doors, we found another room, and that's where we found Ms.
05:12Benoit at.
05:13She was laying on the floor, and she was wrapped up in a blanket or maybe a rug or something
05:18like that.
05:21Went downstairs to the basement area, which was a couple of large open rooms.
05:26And the last door we opened was the gym door, and that's where Mr. Benoit was at.
05:34Because of the mirrors and at the angle Deputy Mundy was at to my right, she saw the reflection at
05:40the far end of the room,
05:41which might have been five to seven, ten feet away from where he actually was.
05:45And she started to say, show me your hands, Fayette County Sheriff's Department.
05:51She could not see he had cabled from one of his weight machines around his neck and had some weights
05:56on him.
05:57That's when I told her, I said, he's sitting right here. He's passed away.
06:01The radio had called us, asked if everything was okay, and I told him on the radio that it looked
06:05like it might be a homicide and suicide.
06:09It was within two or three minutes of us walking back outside that somebody had already strung crime scene tape
06:16across the front of the property.
06:18I was at the gym, and I remember I was driving home.
06:22My son was with me, and I got a call from one of the writers from WWE, who called me
06:28and said, are you sitting down?
06:29I'm like, what's going on here, dude?
06:30And that's when he said, Chris is dead.
06:32And I said, what? Chris who?
06:34He says, Chris Benoit.
06:36And I pulled over to the side of the road, and I just started bawling.
06:39And I remember my son, he said, Daddy, you cry funny.
06:42I was just crying, like, bawling.
06:44And at this time, no one knew what happened.
06:48And so WWE is just thinking that Chris Benoit has passed away, along with Nancy and Daniel.
06:54You're not trying to put together that, okay, did someone break in?
06:58Did carbon monoxide happen?
06:59What's going on?
07:00You just know that these two of your friends are gone, and no one has answers.
07:06Vince McMahon, the chairman of the board, couldn't go on the air and not do anything.
07:11So we went on the air and did what we thought was right.
07:14Tonight, this arena here in Corpus Christi, Texas, was to have been filled to capacity with enthusiastic WWE fans.
07:24We tried to honor the guy.
07:25We tried to honor his family.
07:27We tried to honor his fans.
07:28But we didn't have a full story.
07:31Shame on us for that, I guess.
07:34So tonight will be a three-hour tribute to one of the greatest WWE superstars of all time.
07:44We just know that Chris Benoit is no longer with us, and neither is his family.
07:49Of course I'm going to pay tribute to my friend.
07:51And I would trust you with me, with my life, with my kids' lives.
07:57Because I know you, Chris.
07:59I know your heart.
08:00Yeah, they called me and asked me if I wanted to be on it.
08:03And I was like, absolutely not.
08:04I remember just sitting there, like, just watching, like, dead.
08:08The bottle of vodka, just drinking, like, you know, because Eddie's was bad.
08:11This was worse.
08:13Chris Benoit was not only one of the greatest wrestlers I ever saw, but he was one of the best
08:16friends I ever had in this business.
08:18We did not know all the information.
08:20That's our fault.
08:22We were trying to serve the audience.
08:24It was a major story.
08:25It was hitting all the news sources, and we had a TV show.
08:29We wanted to update people on what the hell was going on.
08:32But we didn't have all the information.
08:34But we didn't know we didn't have all the information.
08:36We were told from the authorities, here's what happened.
08:38Oh, guess what?
08:39We were wrong.
08:40This is not what happened.
08:43Chris was the type of guy he'd want to go to war with.
08:46It was hard, because at that time, some guys were, you know, in their speeches, you know, praising Chris.
08:54Because Chris Benoit was my hero.
08:56I love you, Chris.
08:58It's interesting to me, because when I watched the Raw tribute, and everybody was talking about Benoit, and how great
09:03of a performer he was, and how amazing he was, but I thought Regal's words on that night were very
09:09revealing.
09:12Now, all I'm willing to say is that Chris Benoit was undoubtedly the hardest working man in professional wrestling.
09:23And when you talk to him afterwards, you find out he lived in the same city as Chris, and knew
09:28a lot about whatever fights Nancy and him had, or whatever Chris was going through at the time.
09:32And I'm not sure if a lot of people would have noticed it, but knowing what I knew about him,
09:37I started thinking, wow, this is not good.
09:41My sister had told me to spoil myself, and go to the mall, and get some makeup, and have some
09:48wine with lunch, and go watch a movie.
09:51And I came out of the theater, and I turned my phone on, and I had, like, 22 missed calls
09:55from my parents.
09:58And my parents made sure that they wouldn't tell me anything.
10:00They wanted me to be parked in my driveway, and inside my house, before they told me.
10:05And that's how I found out.
10:08And then when it finally sunk in, I just absolutely lost control of myself.
10:13It was very difficult.
10:15Very difficult.
10:16I had to go to the hospital and be sedated.
10:21I was in Edmonton, and then this number kept calling.
10:25My mom's cell phone, unknown number, unknown number, unknown number.
10:31And then she finally answered it, and it was the police, RCMP.
10:37So, we left, rolled down to the station.
10:43She found out first.
10:46I see her crying there.
10:50She couldn't spit it out, so...
11:04The cop told me that they all passed away over the weekend.
11:12I punched them in the chest.
11:17And then me and the cop went for a walk.
11:19We talked.
11:21And, uh, you know, your dad loved you.
11:28They all loved you.
11:31And, uh...
11:33If I was a joke, I really did.
11:38It wasn't until after the show and after the fact
11:41that all the details started coming.
11:43We have more for you now on a developing story in Fayette County.
11:46The deaths of a pro wrestler and his family.
11:48Fayetteville authorities say the bodies of Chris Benoit and his family
11:52were found this afternoon in their home.
11:54Right now, it's being investigated as a murder-suicide.
11:56However, it...
11:58Until we get the crime lab reports,
12:00it's undetermined exactly what happened.
12:02And that's when all of this, you know,
12:05all of these details start coming out about
12:08it's not just him that's dead, it's Nancy,
12:10and Daniel's dead as well.
12:11And then that's when it just started getting out of control.
12:14The father killed his wife and son and then committed suicide.
12:17That's what's happened here.
12:19You didn't want to believe it.
12:20Can't believe it.
12:21Can't be true.
12:23But it was.
12:32The evidence indicates that it was a particularly brutal and vicious murder.
12:38It was something that showed some sign of real rage.
12:42I'm Matthew Randazza V, and I'm the author of Ring of Hell,
12:45the story of Chris Benoit and the fall of the pro wrestling industry.
12:48The weekend of the murders on Friday,
12:51Chris Benoit had a barbecue out by the pool with Daniel.
12:53And then that Friday evening,
12:55it appears that there was some sort of altercation between Chris and Nancy,
12:58that Chris restrained Nancy with duct tape
13:01and then utilized a telephone cord to strangle her
13:05and then placed a Bible next to her body.
13:09There were a number of beer cans and wine bottles around
13:12that indicate Chris may have been drinking.
13:14Next morning on Saturday,
13:17Chris, we assume, gave his son Daniel Xanax
13:19and then murdered him in his room,
13:22being suffocated by his father.
13:24A Bible was then placed next to Daniel as well.
13:28After that, Chris made a phone call
13:29and let friends know that Daniel and Nancy
13:32were both suffering from a bad stomach virus,
13:34and that he had to take them to the hospital.
13:38That night, Chris went to bed
13:40with the bodies of his wife and child in the house.
13:43On Sunday, Benoit makes a couple searches on the Internet
13:47that are chilling in retrospect.
13:50One for a story in the Bible about the prophet Elijah
13:53and the resurrection of a dead boy in the Old Testament.
13:56And then a search about the quickest and most painless way
13:59of breaking one's own neck.
14:02Chris then went down to his home gym
14:04with a half-drunken bottle of wine.
14:06He went to his lat pull-down machine,
14:08he took the bar off,
14:09he wrapped a towel around his neck,
14:11and he took the metal cord from the lat pull-down machine
14:14and put it around his neck.
14:17He adjusted the weights to 240 pounds,
14:20and then he released it.
14:23So it's a very bizarre scenario,
14:25it's a very bizarre weekend,
14:27and it doesn't leave a lot of answers.
14:29He was just a guy,
14:31you know, like my friend.
14:33Nobody expects their friend to kill their family,
14:37like, what?
14:38When I found out what had really happened,
14:42the shock is just, you can't even believe it.
14:45He had put his knee in her back
14:48and essentially broke her back.
14:50I couldn't fathom how cruel
14:53and how much pain she must have gone through
14:55and how horrific that must have been for her.
14:58It was just unfathomable.
15:00If Chris did give Daniel that, you know,
15:03medication or prescription pills
15:05and suffocate him, you know, like,
15:08shame on him.
15:09Daniel was innocent in all this.
15:11We were hearing other things come out
15:13about the circumstances of him
15:15putting the Bibles by their sides
15:17and having a knife that he had planted
15:21underneath Daniel's bed or something like that.
15:25Still couldn't wrap my head around it.
15:27It just sounded so...
15:29like some bad horror movie.
15:33And now I'm a part of humanizing murderer?
15:40Strange.
15:41I mean, to think that Nancy was dead for two days
15:45before Chris took his life,
15:47how was that even logical
15:49for this man who loved her so much?
15:53Later, it turned out that there was a Bible
15:56in the house,
15:57similar to the ones left by Nancy
15:58and Daniel's body,
16:00that Chris had left something akin to a suicide note.
16:04Something along the lines of,
16:05I'm preparing to leave this earth.
16:08So Chris did leave a suicide note.
16:10He did know what he was doing.
16:12He was at least enough in his right mind
16:13to understand exactly what was happening
16:15and was still considering
16:16whether he would go make a flight
16:17to go wrestle that night
16:18on international television.
16:20Good evening, ladies and gentlemen.
16:21We came up on air with Vince talking
16:24and kind of letting everybody know what happened.
16:27Last night on Monday Night Raw,
16:28the WWE presented a special tribute show
16:31recognizing the career of Chris Benoit.
16:34However, now some 26 hours later,
16:37the facts of this horrific tragedy
16:39are now apparent.
16:41Therefore, other than my comments,
16:43there will be no mention
16:44of Mr. Benoit's name tonight.
16:46It was understood
16:47that we were not to speak of Chris,
16:49speak of Benoit,
16:50speak of anyone of that incident.
16:53And by that next week,
16:55Chris's name was erased
16:57from everything that was involved with WWE.
17:00I mean, when we did interviews,
17:02we were not to mention Chris Benoit.
17:04So that's something
17:06that was really hard for us to do,
17:07but because we all wanted our jobs,
17:09it was understood.
17:11I know WWE has kind of like erased
17:14his history of being in the business
17:15and I can understand
17:17and totally agree with what they did.
17:19We're not going to praise a guy
17:20who murdered his wife or his son.
17:22I don't give many accolades for that.
17:25I went to the funeral of Nancy and Daniel.
17:29I can't even believe how sad that was.
17:32I was the WWE representative there,
17:34just me,
17:35with the shits.
17:36We go to a funeral and people crying
17:37and a kid being buried
17:38and a woman being married for no reason.
17:41No reason to die.
17:43The WWE sent J.R.
17:45and I lost my cool with him
17:47and told him to his face
17:48that he wasn't welcome
17:49at the wake afterward.
17:52It was all a work.
17:53Just fake, garbage, nonsense.
17:57I can see a work coming a mile away
17:59and that's what I saw
18:01and I knew that that was the truth.
18:03I felt like I was the most unwanted person
18:06in the building
18:06because I was a WWE guy
18:08and I probably loved him
18:09as much as anybody there.
18:11Everybody was just a mess.
18:14It's shitty
18:15and it's sad
18:16and it's unfair
18:18because there's two people
18:19that could still be with us today
18:20and if Chris wanted to take his life
18:23then so be it.
18:24But to take all of them?
18:27I didn't go to Chris' funeral.
18:29I was angry.
18:30At that point,
18:31I was pretty angry at Chris
18:33for what he did.
18:34His funeral was very private.
18:36We didn't tell anyone about it.
18:38That's when it all hit me right there
18:40all at once.
18:40I was crying my eyes out.
18:43Who in the wrestling business
18:44provided care for you and your family
18:46in the aftermath of this?
18:48Is that a serious question?
18:50Not a single person.
18:53No one.
18:53And did anyone from the WWE
18:55ever reach out to you and your family?
18:57Chris Jericho and Chavo Guerrero.
18:59That's it.
19:00Nobody else.
19:01You know?
19:02Screw them.
19:04They weren't there for me.
19:06You know?
19:08They backed off
19:09like I didn't even exist.
19:19It was so hard
19:21after the funeral
19:22because the media was just
19:23non-stop.
19:2624-7.
19:27Tonight we are talking about
19:29the strange and very sad case
19:30of Chris Benoit.
19:32I didn't even watch news anymore.
19:33I didn't even watch TV for months.
19:35I couldn't even watch wrestling anymore.
19:37We're also told by the police here
19:39that there were instruments
19:41of death found,
19:43not instruments of murder.
19:44There's going to be an autopsy report,
19:46but there's an awful lot of confusion
19:47about how this happened.
19:49It really, really was
19:51the darkest time of my life.
19:53Benoit had an intense
19:54onstage persona.
19:56He was nicknamed
19:57the rabid Wolverine,
19:58the Canadian Crippler.
19:59The couple actually met
20:00when her former husband
20:01drew up a script
20:03that had put the two of them
20:04in a relationship.
20:05It made everything
20:05extremely difficult.
20:07It made everything
20:08under a magnifying glass
20:09because CNN and Fox
20:12and all the news channels
20:14were at the gates.
20:15You know,
20:16a double murder-suicide
20:17with a seven-year-old kid
20:18as news.
20:19But I think that there's
20:20a point where you really
20:21just need to let
20:22the family grieve.
20:23All I really wanted to do
20:24was to be with
20:25my niece and nephew.
20:27The mainstream media's reaction
20:29was typical
20:29because, A,
20:31they love a tragedy
20:32and it gives them
20:33another reason
20:34to take a shot at wrestling.
20:35It was a field day for them.
20:36Professional wrestlers
20:38are 20 times more likely
20:40to die before age 45
20:42than professional football players.
20:44I think a lot of mainstream media
20:46looks down at wrestling
20:46as it is
20:47and then suddenly
20:47it was public enemy number one.
20:49Chris Benoit's diary
20:51is revealing new information
20:52about his state of mind.
20:54The wrestler wrote
20:54a series of letters
20:56to his best friend.
20:57At one point,
20:58Benoit wrote,
20:58I'll be with you soon.
21:00Mike Benoit believes
21:01it's the diary
21:02of his son going mad.
21:05We just didn't understand
21:06this was going on
21:07at that time
21:07in Chris's life.
21:10I got a call
21:11from Chris's dad,
21:12Mike Benoit,
21:13because he knew
21:14my relationship with Chris.
21:16The first thing
21:16he asked me was why,
21:18which from a father's standpoint
21:20I can understand
21:20how upset he was.
21:22Unfortunately,
21:23I felt bad
21:23I didn't have any answers
21:24for him.
21:26People need to understand
21:26that that was not him.
21:29Not the person we knew.
21:31The person I loved
21:31with all my heart.
21:32My hero.
21:33The term that's been
21:34being thrown around
21:35everywhere is roid rage.
21:36Some say steroid abuse
21:37is rampant at the organization
21:39and everyone just turns
21:40a blind eye to this.
21:41The media's initial response
21:42to the Benoit tragedy
21:43was that this was
21:44a roid rage incident.
21:45Where do steroids stand
21:47in the bizarre Benoit deaths?
21:49Pro wrestling,
21:50when Chris Benoit
21:50entered it in the 1980s,
21:52was extremely discriminatory
21:53against people
21:54who were not
21:54six foot plus tall,
21:56who were not 250 pounds
21:58or more
21:58and very, very muscular.
21:59My understanding
22:00is that Chris Benoit
22:00was using steroids
22:01from when he was
22:02in high school.
22:04In the months
22:04before the murders,
22:05Chris received a number
22:07of text messages
22:07from Nancy
22:08in which she made it
22:09very clear
22:09she was sick
22:10and tired of his steroid abuse.
22:12Nancy definitely
22:13directly accused him
22:14of abusing steroids
22:15to the point
22:15that it led him
22:16to be an angry
22:17and violent
22:18and unhappy husband.
22:20And she said
22:21that the WWE's
22:22drug enforcement policy
22:24and testing regime
22:25was obviously nonsense.
22:26Something called
22:26the Wellness Program
22:27that alleged
22:28that it was testing
22:29every WWE wrestler
22:31to make sure
22:31they weren't using
22:32recreational drugs,
22:33performance enhancing drugs,
22:34or steroids.
22:35I think at that time,
22:37you know,
22:37instituting a wellness
22:38program like that,
22:40I think everybody
22:40was happy
22:41that finally
22:41some of these guys
22:42that needed the help
22:43were going to get help.
22:44I thought it was a great idea
22:45or anything
22:45to help talent
22:47and save guys
22:48from themselves.
22:51After Eddie died,
22:53the WWE's drug testing
22:54was super strict.
22:56It went through the roof.
22:57Like, you couldn't even
22:57take a freaking aspirin,
23:00like a high-powered aspirin,
23:02unless you had, like,
23:03a prescription.
23:04And I'm not kidding.
23:05The drug testing
23:06is so strict
23:06that there's rampant steroids.
23:08Dude, you can't.
23:10You can't go snort cocaine
23:11or smoke weed
23:12or anything.
23:15In practice,
23:16it was seen
23:17that this initial version
23:18of the Wellness Program
23:19had large loopholes in it
23:21and large blind spots
23:23that allowed wrestlers
23:24to continue to use drugs
23:25at a really large scale
23:27without tripping the tests.
23:30Speculation is running wild.
23:31Did steroids play a role
23:33or is there
23:34or another explanation?
23:35We have an exclusive interview
23:36with WWE Chairman
23:37Vince McMahon.
23:39WWE did everything
23:40it could combat
23:40any coverage
23:41in the news media
23:41that indicated
23:42that drug abuse
23:43or steroid abuse
23:44was the cause
23:45of the homicides.
23:46And obviously,
23:46this is not an act of rage.
23:48It's an act of deliberation
23:49when you do something
23:49like this over three days.
23:51It's not an act of rage,
23:52be it steroid rage
23:53or roid rage,
23:54whatever it's called,
23:54or any other rage.
23:56WWE strongly suggests
23:58that it is entirely wrong
23:59for speculators
24:00to suggest that steroids
24:02had anything to do
24:03with these senseless acts.
24:04It's all speculation
24:05until the toxicology reports
24:07come back.
24:08In his autopsy,
24:09Chris Benoit
24:09was shown to have
24:10enormous amounts
24:11of testosterone
24:12in his body.
24:13Testosterone is still
24:14a steroid
24:15that's banned
24:15in all major sports.
24:17It directly leads
24:18to increased muscle growth.
24:20Some folks have said
24:21he had ten times
24:21the normal amount
24:22of testosterone
24:22in his body
24:23as a normal human.
24:24And did Benoit
24:25pass a wellness program
24:26check leading up
24:26to the murders?
24:27Yes, preposterously
24:28Chris Benoit
24:29passed a wellness check
24:30leading up to the murder
24:31despite the irrefutable fact
24:33that he was taking
24:33enormous amounts of steroids.
24:43Well, after it initially happened,
24:46I actually had nightmares.
24:47It was very traumatic
24:48because as a female,
24:50I tend to really
24:51get angry with him.
24:52and the one person
24:54she thought was there
24:54to protect her
24:55is the one
24:56that really took her life.
24:58There was a lot
24:59of stuff going on
24:59behind closed doors
25:00that no one knew about.
25:02I think there was
25:02a lot of volatile fights.
25:04One thing I'd always
25:05heard about Nancy
25:05and the fact that
25:06she didn't take shit.
25:08So I just know
25:09there was a lot
25:09of volatility there.
25:13That's the word
25:13I think was used,
25:14volatile.
25:15There was a few times
25:16that Nancy would call me
25:17and she would say
25:18that her and Chris
25:18were fighting.
25:19There was an instance
25:20when they were in Tampa
25:21and Chris was upset
25:23when they were driving
25:24on the way to our house
25:25and Chris went
25:26and busted the windshield
25:27of their car.
25:29Did you ever witness
25:30any abuse
25:31that was going on
25:32in that relationship?
25:33My sister called me
25:35to the house
25:35and she called Mike Durham
25:37known as Johnny Grunge
25:38who was also
25:39a professional wrestler
25:40that lived in the area
25:43and Mike said
25:44I'll go wrangle Chris,
25:46I'll go wrangle Chris,
25:46don't do anything rash
25:48but it was already
25:50kind of done.
25:52He hurt her.
25:54I don't know
25:55whether it was
25:55intentional or accidental
25:56but he hurt her.
25:58Out of respect
25:59for the kids
26:00that he still has here
26:01I won't go further
26:02into that.
26:05She got a restraining order
26:06against him
26:07and I went down there
26:08and stayed at the house.
26:10Mike had him
26:10at a hotel there
26:11in the area.
26:12Chris contacted me
26:14directly
26:15because Nancy
26:16wasn't answering
26:16any of his calls
26:17and asked me
26:19to talk to my sister
26:20on his behalf
26:23and please, please, please
26:24let him come to the house
26:26and talk to her personally.
26:27She called him
26:28and he came over
26:29the next day
26:29and they were back together
26:31a couple of days later.
26:33So I look back
26:35on that moment
26:35and say
26:36you probably shouldn't
26:37have gotten involved
26:38and why did I take his call
26:40because maybe that
26:41would have been
26:41the end of it.
26:43Almost every day
26:44I think about that.
26:47When police
26:48found steroids
26:49on the scene
26:49many assume
26:50that explained it.
26:52The killer had flipped out
26:53because of drug use
26:54or might there be
26:56another explanation?
26:57The initial media coverage
26:59all focused on
27:01steroid use
27:01and I said
27:02there's no way.
27:03I'm Chris Nowinski
27:04I'm a former
27:05WWE superstar
27:06and now I am
27:07a neuroscientist
27:09and run the
27:09Concussion Legacy Foundation.
27:12My wrestling career
27:13came to an end
27:14because I had
27:15a series of concussions
27:16that I didn't quite
27:17appreciate were concussions.
27:23I never stopped
27:24performing until
27:25the damage was
27:26sort of too much.
27:27So I decided
27:28I would start digging
27:30into what else was known
27:31and it became a book.
27:34Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy
27:35or CTE
27:36is a progressive
27:38degenerative brain disease
27:39that appears to be
27:40started by
27:41hits to the head.
27:43Oh my God!
27:45Oh man!
27:47And it's like
27:47gosh!
27:48My God!
27:49What I knew about
27:51CTE at that time
27:52was that there were
27:53four cases of NFL players.
27:55Two had died by suicide
27:56and one
27:57had started hearing voices
27:59and led the police
28:01on a chase
28:02through upstate New York
28:03and died in a fiery crash
28:05going on the wrong
28:05side of the highway.
28:07When I heard about
28:08what happened
28:08with Chris Benoit
28:09I immediately remembered
28:11a conversation
28:11I'd had with him
28:13maybe six months prior.
28:15I remembered that
28:16he had sat next to me
28:17in the locker room
28:18and he said
28:19I heard you write
28:20in a book
28:20about concussions.
28:21I was like yeah
28:22and he goes
28:22I'm interested
28:23in what you're learning.
28:24He's like
28:25how many concussions
28:25have you had
28:27you know
28:27before you had to retire?
28:28and I said
28:29well I can remember
28:30at least six
28:30but I probably had more.
28:32And I said
28:33how many have you had?
28:34And he said
28:35I've had more
28:36than I can count.
28:37And then he said
28:38I'm going to give you
28:39my phone number
28:39and I want you
28:40to call me next week.
28:41The next week
28:42I called him.
28:43It sounded like
28:44he was in the middle
28:45of an argument.
28:45He was clearly agitated.
28:47It sounded like
28:47someone else was there.
28:48He just said
28:49hey I can't talk right now
28:50can I call you back?
28:51And I said sure.
28:53I wonder if the reason
28:54he was asking me
28:55to call him
28:56was that he knew
28:57that something
28:58was going on
28:59but he didn't quite
28:59appreciate what that was.
29:02And so I decided
29:03that I really
29:04needed to know
29:05if Chris had CTE.
29:06There was so much
29:07media attention
29:08I really couldn't imagine
29:09his family answering
29:11the phone
29:11but I said
29:12I'll give it a try
29:13and Chris's father
29:15answered on the second ring.
29:17He was in
29:18a state of mind
29:19you could imagine
29:20when you just lost
29:21your son
29:21and learned what happened.
29:23I told him my theory
29:24and he immediately said
29:26yeah I want
29:27I want to see this done.
29:29We have the brain
29:30in early July
29:31and I think
29:32within about a month
29:33we knew that
29:34it was positive
29:35for CTE
29:35and it was a pretty
29:37severe case of CTE.
29:39And so we held
29:39a press conference
29:40in New York.
29:41When you look at
29:41Chris Rabinowitz's brain
29:43it is in fact shocking.
29:45Our findings showed
29:46extensive areas
29:48of tau protein deposition
29:50throughout his brain.
29:51Tau protein is a marker
29:53for brain damage.
29:56With Chris
29:57he actually had a
29:58what would be defined
29:59as a severe case
29:59of CTE at 40 years old
30:01which is early to have it.
30:02So it wouldn't just be
30:03areas of his cortex
30:05or areas of his brain stem
30:06but there was damage
30:08in areas that you would think
30:09could influence
30:11emotional behaviors.
30:13And I believe
30:14the degeneration
30:15of his brain
30:15changed who he was
30:17and what he was capable of.
30:18If you get hit in the head
30:19thousands of times
30:20your brain
30:21essentially can start
30:22to rot.
30:23You get this damage
30:24in your brain
30:25that even after you
30:25stop getting hit in the head
30:26will continue to spread
30:28and changes who you are
30:30and how you behave
30:31and what you become.
30:44I think about
30:45when me and Chris
30:46would be talking
30:47and he would just be
30:48crying so much
30:49that I wonder
30:50why he couldn't control
30:51his crying.
30:52Does that go with
30:53the concussions?
30:54Does that go with
30:55his brain?
30:55You know
30:56Eddie and Chris
30:57took a lot of chair shots.
31:02And these chair shots
31:03from like years ago
31:04were hard
31:05and they were mean.
31:09In the 90s
31:10we used to take
31:11chair shots to the head.
31:13That was a badge of honor.
31:14And what I mean by that
31:15is someone would
31:16swing a steel chair
31:17at your head.
31:22And I literally remember
31:23you would grit your teeth
31:25and you'd
31:26you'd
31:26you know
31:27tense yourself
31:28and tense your neck
31:31and just take it.
31:33They hit you
31:33on the head with it
31:34and you just take it.
31:37That was what you did.
31:40That was expected.
31:41If you had a concussion
31:42in wrestling
31:43you just shake it off.
31:45Shake it off
31:46go in there
31:46and do it
31:47and all of us did it.
31:50I wrestled for
31:5120 plus years.
31:53Makes me wonder
31:56how much
31:57CTE do I have?
31:58How much CTE
31:59do these other wrestlers have?
32:00Because we all got it
32:01to some extent.
32:03You know
32:03is this going to be
32:04my end?
32:07It's one of the most
32:08incredible things to me
32:08is you have
32:09Harley Race
32:09invents the flying headbutt
32:11and tells everyone after
32:12don't do this move
32:13it fucks your spine up horribly
32:15it ruins your ability
32:16to have an old age.
32:17Dynamite Kid
32:18hears that from
32:19Harley Race
32:19does it his whole career
32:20ends up in a wheelchair.
32:21Dynamite Kid
32:22tells Chris Benoit
32:23Chris Benoit
32:23does it his whole career
32:24and then loses his mind.
32:25Oh!
32:27Man!
32:28I mean
32:28there is a clear
32:29history of people
32:30repeating
32:31the most self-destructive
32:33story imaginable
32:34over and over again.
32:37I think the Benoit tragedy
32:39led to some
32:40institutional changes.
32:42The awareness
32:42of what CTE is
32:44was never before
32:45even a conversation point.
32:46Now it is.
32:48And finally
32:49unprotected chair shots
32:51and subsequent concussions
32:52are now being addressed
32:53because the one thing
32:55we've got to do
32:56is protect the athlete.
32:58I think when you look
32:59at what Chris Benoit
33:00did as a symptom
33:01of some sort of
33:02medical problem
33:03whether it's drug use
33:05or brain damage
33:06I think that misses the point.
33:08Ultimately
33:08this thing
33:09that is the core reason
33:10this happened
33:11was Chris Benoit
33:12made a decision
33:12when he was a very young person
33:14to do absolutely
33:15whatever it took
33:16to succeed
33:17at his childhood dream
33:18of becoming a pro wrestling star.
33:20No matter what happened
33:22that weekend
33:22Chris Benoit's story
33:23was going to have
33:24a tragic end.
33:27I think his fate
33:28was sealed
33:28the day that Eddie died.
33:30Whether he knew it or not
33:31I don't think anybody
33:32could save him
33:33after that.
33:34Not his kids
33:35not his family
33:35not his other friends
33:37I just think
33:38that was the one guy
33:39that he said
33:40I can't do it
33:41if Eddie's not with me.
33:44Whatever it was
33:45that he was going through
33:46you know
33:47I think he just continued
33:49to shrink his whole
33:49world
33:50until all that was left
33:51was just whatever
33:52was in his head
33:54that caused him to snap
33:55and he f***ed a snap.
33:58It's not one thing
33:59I think that it's a factor
34:01of alcohol
34:03and drugs
34:03and yes
34:05possibly CTE
34:06and stress
34:07and grief
34:09and all those things
34:10rolled together
34:11put him on a path
34:12that weekend
34:12that he couldn't get off.
34:14Chris was always going to be
34:15my friend
34:16and my brother
34:18I just know
34:19that there was something
34:20going on with him
34:21that wasn't him
34:22and it's something
34:22that you know
34:23I'm still very much
34:24torn with
34:24because you love Chris
34:27you just hate what he did.
34:28The act of what he did
34:30is unthinkable
34:33unforgivable
34:35but it's still hard
34:36for me to separate
34:37a friendship
34:38that I had with him
34:38matches that I had
34:39with him
34:40moments, times
34:41car rides
34:42I think I can always
34:43look at Chris
34:43as one of the best
34:44performers
34:45our business
34:46has ever seen
34:47just kind of
34:48leave it at that.
34:52I get a question all the time
34:53does Chris Benoit
34:54deserve to be
34:55in the Hall of Fame
34:55and I'd say
34:56absolutely not
34:57no
34:58the issue is
34:59is that if Chris
35:00were here
35:00we could talk to him
35:01he would say
35:01putting me in the
35:02Hall of Fame
35:03is going to be
35:03one of the great
35:04distractions
35:04of the entire event
35:06so all it's going to do
35:06is bring up
35:07Nancy and Daniel
35:08and Chris
35:09in their last 24 hours
35:10so therefore I say
35:12Chris Benoit
35:13does not belong
35:13in the WWE Hall of Fame
35:15now or ever.
35:17you have two guys
35:18that were the same
35:20basically their whole life
35:22and had the same reputation
35:23of being just
35:24immaculate professionals
35:25immaculate human beings
35:26the nicest guys
35:28and they both die
35:29very young
35:30and one's legacy
35:32is acclaimed
35:33and one's is buried
35:35to that you
35:35almost can't say his name.
35:38If you would have told Chris
35:40you know when you die
35:42your name
35:43and your body of work
35:44is going to be
35:45erased
35:46from existence
35:47forever
35:49it would have broke his heart
35:50because I think
35:51if nothing else
35:51I remember he told me
35:52it's like listen
35:52the critics are the critics
35:54but if you have the respect
35:55of your peers
35:56then nothing else matters
35:59so to find out
36:00that he would have
36:01lost the respect
36:01not only of his peers
36:02but his friends
36:03his family
36:05I don't think
36:05he ever wanted that
36:07it almost took down
36:08the whole business
36:09what Chris did
36:10almost
36:10and that's another thing
36:11what Chris did
36:12almost destroyed
36:14the only thing
36:15that he ever loved
36:16from a professional standpoint
36:18the only thing
36:19he ever loved
36:20pro wrestling
36:21Chris Benoit
36:22almost destroyed it
36:23that would have
36:24torn him apart as well
36:26so it leads us around
36:27to like
36:28why did he do it
36:29I don't think
36:30anyone's ever
36:31going to be able
36:31to answer that question
36:41you know
36:43people will look
36:43at me different now
36:45because of
36:46what he did
36:47people talking shit
36:48behind my back
36:49looking at me different
36:51getting bullied
36:52screw it
36:54I'm defending
36:55my family
36:56and what I believe in
36:58you know
36:59he loved them
37:00that definitely
37:01was not him
37:04he's still my hero
37:06I think about him
37:07all the time
37:10I want them
37:11to recognize Nancy
37:12though
37:14she definitely
37:15deserves
37:15the recognition
37:16that she doesn't get
37:18that's the unfortunate
37:19and the sad part
37:20about the story
37:21is that
37:21she needs to be
37:23remembered
37:23for a strong
37:25woman
37:26pioneering
37:26in this business
37:27and her talent
37:28and focus on that
37:30instead of
37:31what happened
37:32to her
37:34she's a hall of famer
37:35all across the board
37:36in my opinion
37:36she was a pioneer
37:38and one of the best
37:40at a role
37:40that doesn't exist anymore
37:42as a pro wrestling
37:43manager
37:44she created the role
37:46she perfected the role
37:47and then when she
37:48stopped doing it
37:48the role basically
37:49disappeared
37:50I would like nothing
37:51better than to see
37:52Nancy
37:52you know
37:54Nancy Benoit
37:55once again
37:56you can't even say
37:57that name
37:57right
37:58woman
38:00I would like nothing
38:01better than to see
38:01woman be put into
38:02the WB Hall of Fame
38:05she was a great mom
38:06she was a beautiful friend
38:09and Nancy
38:10will always
38:11be the superstar
38:12that she was meant to be
38:14in my mind
38:16can I blow a kiss
38:21what do you remember
38:23the most about Nancy
38:26I remember
38:28everything about her
38:29I remember how her hair smells
38:35she took me in
38:37with both hands
38:39real hard
38:39like on her both sides
38:41of the blanket
38:41to tuck me in
38:43almost like she was
38:44putting a lock on me
38:45to keep me safe
38:46and to this day
38:48when I get sad
38:48or upset
38:49or stressed out
38:50I will tuck myself in
38:53on the sides
38:54so that I feel more secure
38:57what do you remember
38:57the most about Daniel
39:00everything
39:02I closed my eyes
39:03and I could see him
39:03doing everything
39:05he was our whole lives
39:06all of us
39:07he was very very very very loved
39:10by our family
39:11by his siblings
39:12he and his brother
39:14were just
39:14thick as thieves
39:17did you go on
39:18to have any relationship
39:19with the Benoit family
39:20afterward
39:22I tried
39:25unsuccessfully
39:30I was told
39:31I won't say by who
39:32that the children
39:33didn't want anything
39:34to do with us
39:35and apparently
39:37the children were told
39:38that we didn't want
39:38anything to do with them
39:39because of what their dad did
39:42which was absolutely
39:43not the truth
39:46my last trip
39:48with my family
39:49was
39:50for Wrestlemania 23
39:52in Detroit
39:53and then after the match
39:55we flew back to Atlanta
39:56me, Nancy
39:59and Daniel
40:00my dad went to Mexico
40:02for a tour
40:03and then me, Nancy
40:05and Daniel
40:05were just hanging
40:07around the house
40:08taking pictures
40:09you know
40:10up by the trees
40:11with the dogs
40:13and then
40:15you know
40:28okay
40:29just let it out
40:30what this is all about
40:32oh shit
40:38David is absolutely
40:39a victim
40:39he's a great kid
40:41that was just
40:42dealt a bad hand
40:43and it's just not fair
40:44it's not right
40:45he didn't do anything wrong
40:46he's just
40:46he's an innocent
40:48bystander
40:48in all of this
40:51alright
41:05too real
41:06it's good for us
41:08it's good for us
41:14I felt that because
41:16Chris killed his family
41:17that the family
41:19he left behind
41:19was automatically
41:21blackballed
41:21from the world
41:23like they're going
41:24to be blamed
41:25for what Chris did
41:26to me
41:27those who needed
41:28to be reconnected
41:29because talking
41:30with David
41:30and meeting Sandra
41:31and knowing she was
41:33having the same
41:33issues and pain
41:34and hurt
41:35that David had
41:36and nobody will
41:37ever really understand
41:39what they went through
41:40with the exception
41:41of each other
41:42so I thought
41:42if I could connect them
41:44if they had a chance
41:45to talk
41:45that maybe they could
41:46move on
41:47and still realize
41:49that they have
41:49family in each other
41:51Chris Jericho
41:52wrestling angel
41:53come to life
41:54he gave my number
41:56to my nephew
41:56and gave my nephew's
41:57number to me
41:58we hadn't talked
41:59since before
42:00everything happened
42:02so 13 years
42:04the last time
42:04we saw each other
42:07it's been a very long time
42:09she finally called me
42:10I answered
42:11we talked on the phone
42:12for probably a good
42:14two hours
42:15and now
42:16going to watch wrestling
42:19because I still love it
42:20then my blood
42:23feels like we never
42:24were apart
42:25felt like we were just
42:26reconnected
42:27left off where we started
42:28nothing has changed
42:30she's still my auntie Zaja
42:32Chris lives on
42:33and David every day
42:34and Nancy lives on
42:36and Sandra every day
42:37and I think they were
42:38both lost
42:38when Chris and Nancy
42:39died
42:41so
42:42hopefully this will
42:43help them
42:43get found
42:44we feel better
42:46because you guys have
42:48the same perspective
42:49you know
42:49and it's important
42:51for you guys to
42:51stick together on this
42:53right
42:53because you know
42:54we can be friends
42:55and be supportive
42:56but it's not the same
42:57it's for you guys
42:58no
42:59it's not the same
42:59it's family
43:00yeah exactly
43:01I've never been
43:05I've never been more
43:07grateful and happy
43:08to see someone
43:09that I love
43:09as I was
43:10when I saw my nephew
43:12do you think
43:12you will ever be able
43:14to or want to give
43:15forgiveness towards Chris
43:18yes
43:19I think I do
43:20someday want to be able
43:21to forgive him
43:22I do
43:23because
43:24carrying around
43:27the burden of hate
43:29gets exhausting
43:32everyone deserves
43:33forgiveness
43:37and everyone
43:38deserves mercy
43:39so I think that
43:41within time
43:42there will be a day
43:44when I got on my knees
43:47and I finally say it
43:48that I forgive him
43:54you never know
43:54it might be tomorrow
43:56but
43:57I do know
43:58it's not today
44:00you
44:00you
44:01you
44:09you
44:09you
