03:40They had a wrestling bear that lived under their porch
03:43It was like the Munster's house for the people in Calgary
03:46Stu would invite everybody over and make breakfast
03:50They had a bunch of cats
03:51And he'd take the thing where he's flipping the eggs
03:54And he'd flip the cat shit over there
03:55And he'd go back to flipping the eggs, you know
03:57Made him tough is what it did
03:59And Stu began the Stampede Wrestling promotion in Alberta
04:04And had a very successful company there for a long time
04:07Hello, hello, hello
04:09And welcome to this, another edition
04:12And Bret Hart was kind of a pale, skinny
04:15You know, maybe 21-year-old kid or whatever
04:18But you could tell he kind of knew what he was doing
04:20And I'm more confident right now than I've ever been
04:22And there's no reason right now that him and me
04:24Shouldn't have those belts right now
04:25The Harts were very integral to professional wrestling around the world
04:29In 1984, Stu Hart is trying to keep his struggling territory afloat
04:33The rapidly expanding WWF strikes a deal to acquire the entire promotion
04:38Along with Stu's main star, his son, Bret
04:42When Vince bought Stu Hart's Stampede Wrestling in 1984
04:47He took Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart, who was the son-in-law
04:51As a team, the Hart Foundation, they were managed by Jimmy Hart, no relation
04:54They were a tremendous tag team
04:57And Bret Hart had a perfect foil in Shawn Michaels
05:01When you have two guys like Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels
05:04That are as talented as they are at what they do to begin with
05:06And then sometimes there's just chemistry
05:09You find a duet between two singers that have never worked together before
05:13But suddenly, it's a hit
05:14Look at this
05:15Whoa
05:16360 at mid-air
05:18Internationally, we're getting reports back
05:22That we've got a megastar on our hands in the form of Bret Hart
05:27His work had made him this megastar
05:31That was all they wanted to see
05:32That's all they wanted to talk about
05:34At the same time, Ric Flair was the champion
05:36And Ric was having some health issues
05:38We needed to make a change
05:41So Vince is looking at it going
05:42Why not, Bret?
05:44That's the kind of guy you want to reward
05:47Vince McMahon's one of the most unique individuals on the planet
05:51If you could cross a genius with P.T. Barnum and Donald Trump
05:56You would get the love child that would be Vince McMahon
05:59Vince, honestly, is a third-generation wrestling promoter
06:03Vince controls creative
06:04Vince controls talent choices
06:06They run the lunch schedule past Vince McMahon to this day
06:09Over the years, Vince had a good relationship with Bret
06:13I don't know, you know, I think that once Bret became champion in Saskatoon
06:19There started, there was a change that was taking place
06:23The criteria for a world champion in those days
06:31There wasn't a set physical list of maneuvers or whatever that you had to perform
06:37It was whoever Vince thought could be the guy
06:40Vince McMahon decides who the champion is going to be
06:43It's not actually won by anybody
06:46So Bret didn't beat Ric Flair
06:48He won the championship in a scripted contest
06:53Okay, in a storyline
06:54Bret deserved, you know, to have that accolade
06:58But at the same time, remember that someone made you champion
07:02You didn't really beat anybody
07:04I think Bret looked at the WWF championship like guys years ago used to
07:09Maybe it was because of his father and his lineage
07:11But when you were chosen to be a champion of a major company
07:14It meant that the promoter thought that you were the best talent
07:18That you were the best draw
07:20That you would make him the most money
07:21That you were the guy
07:22While Bret's star is rising in the WWF
07:25A fledgling promotion suddenly starts edging out Vince McMahon
07:29And the television ratings
07:31WCW in the early 90s was a secondary competitor to the WWF
07:38I happen to be Eric Bischoff
07:40You know, as the executive producer, at least I had a voice within WCW
07:44WWF is up here
07:46WCW is way down here
07:49There's no way I can be better than the WWF
07:51But I gotta be different from now
07:53Their tape, I'm live
07:54They target their content towards kids
07:57I decided I wanted my characters to be more reality-based
08:01I would use their real names
08:03WCW came after our talent
08:05The perception was they offered them a lot more money
08:07You know, when Hulk Hogan left the WWF
08:09I think it hurt Vince personally
08:12It stung a little bit
08:14And the first big names to go were Scott Hall, Kevin Nash in the very beginning
08:19Ted DiBiase left
08:21Roddy Piper shortly thereafter
08:23The curtain call as it came to be known happened because Nash and Hall were leaving to go to WCW for their big contracts
08:30It is my last appearance for the WWE
08:33And it's also Kevin Nash's last appearance
08:35It was at Madison Square Garden
08:37The most famous arena in the world
08:39After the last match, Hall and Nash and Michaels and Hemsley
08:44Two of them good guys, two of them bad guys
08:46All went out to the ring and had a big hug and a big kiss
08:50And waved bye to the fans
08:52Who had no idea what was going on
08:54With Sean and those guys
08:56They broke kayfabe in front of the fans in Madison Square Garden
09:01The word kayfabe is like a lot of wrestling terminology
09:03It comes from the days of the carnivals
09:06When you break kayfabe in wrestling
09:08You let the fans and the general public in the inside world and ruin the illusion
09:14It wasn't like that
09:15It all just happened organically
09:18Because the fans were going crazy
09:20I mean it was like a magical moment
09:21Here we are 25 years later
09:24Talking about it
09:25You had been chosen and selected to be in a secret brotherhood
09:29And you kept those illusions private and to yourself
09:33Because it was a code
09:34It was the code of kayfabe
09:36Now as competition between the two biggest promotions heats up
09:40Wrestling's fourth wall starts to crumble
09:43Exposing its secrets
09:44And while Bret enters the biggest rivalry of his career
09:48He never could have imagined
09:49That it would end up leading to his ultimate destruction
09:53Before their off-screen feud would boil over
10:00Into one of wrestling's most controversial moments
10:03Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels' contrasting in-ring styles
10:07Led to some of the greatest matches of all time
10:10As far as wrestling styles between Bret and Shawn
10:13Bret was more basic, more grounded, more hard-hitting, more technical
10:17Michaels from the other side and...
10:20Oh no!
10:21Michaels, he's an incredible performer
10:23But also a lot of his stuff is more pretty
10:26And a little bit more gymnastic
10:28Oh, he's caught by Bret Hart!
10:29Oh, look at that!
10:30Oh!
10:30I think Shawn Michaels is probably the greatest performer all around
10:35Plus he was different
10:36He wasn't a big giant
10:38My contract was gonna expire
10:40Eric Bischoff has sent feelers out to me
10:44There were two separate occasions when I began to talk to Bret about coming over
10:49And I heard the initial offer was two million
10:51And then it was two million something
10:52And it got up to like three million
10:54And I'm sure they were rounding off
10:55But at that point, what's the difference, right?
10:57Vince heard about them giving me an offer
11:00And remember, Vince said, he goes, I'll make you an offer
11:02And we worked out a contract
11:04It was 1.5 million for 20 years, I think
11:08Bret favors loyalty over money
11:11And accepts the counteroffer from Vince McMahon
11:13But then a mutual animosity between Bret and Shawn begins to take hold
11:18Shawn was starting to get overwhelmed with negative
11:23Doing a Chippendale kind of gimmick is not a heroic thing to do
11:27Shawn Michaels saw an opportunity to be more and more of a top guy
11:31And also to be more and more of a prick
11:33Nobody breaks into this wrestling business to work their way to the middle
11:37I mean, if you don't want to be on top, you're in the wrong business
11:40I don't really care if you want to have dinner with me
11:43Do you want to wrestle me?
11:43Oh, you do
11:45Okay
11:46I don't think that they were really that different
11:48Which is probably where the real-life rivalry came into play
11:52First day when I walked out
11:55And I ended up trashing Shawn Michaels on the interview
11:57About his Playgirl magazine centerfold
12:00Before I went out, I said, Shawn, I'm gonna
12:01It's okay if I bring up that Playgirl magazine
12:04And take a jab at that and say something about it
12:06He goes, no, go ahead, say whatever you want
12:08World Wrestling Federation needs a hero
12:11They need a role model
12:12They need somebody they can look up to
12:14Not somebody that poses for girly magazines
12:16And I came back and Shawn was just crushed
12:19He almost looked like he burst into tears
12:21Now we're doing live TV
12:23And these guys are saying things on live TV
12:25About each other
12:27Shawn made reference to Sunny Days
12:29Sunny is Tammy Sitch
12:31She was one of the valets
12:32She was the first real, you know, big pin-up girl of the WWF
12:36And Shawn was making the inference
12:39That Brett was having some kind of an affair
12:43Or some kind of relationship with Sunny
12:46Even though lately you've had some sunny days, my friend
12:51You still can't get the job done in any situation
12:56Oh boy
12:57Now from a fan's point of view, it's getting exciting
13:00But if you're the other guy, you're hating the dude who's talking about you
13:03Because now you've got to call home and explain that to your wife
13:06You don't mess with a guy's wife or his family
13:09Or else you find yourself laying in a ditch somewhere
13:12So we're in Hartford, Connecticut one night at the Hartford Civic Center
13:15And all of a sudden the door bus opens and in comes the Brooklyn Brawler
13:18And he says, hey, Vince, Shawn and Brett have just gotten a fight in the bathroom
13:23Shawn finally comes into my dressing room
13:26We haven't talked for about a couple months
13:28And I just remember I was just trying to be nice
13:29I almost like forgot that we ever had issues
13:31And I said, hey, Shawn, I was brushing my hair
13:33And he goes, you think I'm going to talk to you?
13:35And whatever it was, Brett just leg-dived him and took him down right there
13:38So I grabbed him by the hair
13:39Swung him around the dressing room
13:41I think his feet were actually off the ground a couple of times
13:43And it was like two prostitutes fighting in downtown or something
13:46Here comes Shawn
13:47And he's hot
13:49And he has got in his hand a handful of his hair
13:52It looked like a small possum
13:54And I'll never forget this
13:56He said, this is an unsafe working environment
14:00As far as I know, I think if anybody was sleeping with Sonny
14:05It probably was Shawn
14:06As the backstage friction between Brett and Shawn intensifies
14:13Vince begins to lose the TV ratings war
14:16And is forced to cut costs
14:18Vince comes back and looks at the commitment
14:23That he had made to Brett Hart
14:26And it was a drain
14:27It was a drain on the company for what we were bringing in at the time
14:30Vince told me that basically
14:32He couldn't afford to pay me the contract that he'd given me
14:35It kind of broke my heart
14:36Like, Brett's like, okay, I get it
14:39I remember I got off the phone from him
14:40And I said, I guess I'm done
14:42I hung up with Vince
14:43And I signed my WCW contract
14:45I can't remember exactly what day or when I heard that
14:49Brett had made the deal and was going to WCW
14:51But Vince told us
14:53Brett was going to finish up at Survivor Series
14:55He dropped the belt
14:56And then he'd, you know, he'd be free
14:59It didn't turn out that way
15:01With Brett leaving the company
15:03Brett wasn't just leaving the company
15:05He was leaving the company and going to our competitor
15:07That was beating us in the ratings
15:09To have our champion leave the company is bad enough
15:12To have them leave the company with the championship
15:15It's kicking the nuts
15:17The time-honored tradition is
15:19When you're leaving a territory or a promotion
15:21You lose on the way out
15:23I gotta tell you, in the beginning
15:25There wasn't a whole lot of worry about it
15:28Because it was Brett
15:29And we thought that there would not be any issue with Brett
15:33Dropping the championship to whoever we asked him
15:36To drop the championship to
15:37When I first heard that I was wrestling Sean
15:39Was maybe about three or four weeks before Survivor Series
15:45Anyway, so Vince pulled me
15:47He goes, he's all excited
15:48He goes, we're going to drop the belt to Sean
15:50So when I saw Sean
15:52I thought this is your chance to open the door
15:56For sort of dialogue
15:57So I remember when we shook hands
15:59I said, Sean, I just heard that we're wrestling
16:01At Survivor Series
16:02I said, I want you to know
16:03That you'll always be safe with me in the ring
16:06That I'll always be professional
16:07I would never do anything to hurt you
16:09Or injure you or anything like that
16:11And he looked at me and he said
16:13He goes, I appreciate that
16:15But I just want you to know
16:16That I am not willing to do the same thing for you
16:19And he turned around
16:19And walked out of the dressing room
16:20And slammed the door
16:21Vince, even though he knew
16:24That Sean and Brett hated each other
16:25Somehow he thought this match
16:27Was magically going to go in the ring
16:29And everything was going to work out
16:30Like he wanted
16:30And the closer that we got to the match
16:33The more obvious it was that it was not
16:35One of the things he had given Brett
16:36In that brand new contract
16:38With all the bells and whistles
16:39Was reasonable, creative control
16:41Of his character
16:42And the way he was presented
16:43I'm the boss of my last 60 days
16:45Why would I lose to Sean?
16:47He's disrespected me
16:48I'm not wrestling Sean
16:50I'm not putting Sean over
16:51Under any circumstances
16:52Until he proves me
16:53That he's got enough respect
16:54For me to put me over first
16:56And I was on Brett's side
16:58Because Sean was the prick
16:59Not Brett
16:59But we had to get
17:01The belt back
17:02The news of Vince's current champion
17:04Signing with his main competitor
17:06Would spell his defeat
17:08In the ratings war
17:09With his back to the wall
