What do you make of Jason Varitek's departure?
Curtis: "They have handled the departure of Jason Varitek in the worst way possible"
In your opinion, was the 'new role' offered to former Red Sox captain, a lateral move?

00:00they have handled the departure of jason veritech in the worst possible way because
00:08everybody knows that jason is not a guy that's going to stand in front of you and talk when he
00:13doesn't like he doesn't ever share stuff behind the scenes he doesn't complain and the way in
00:20which he was let go from what i understand and it's not my story to tell is pathetic
00:25and the fact that they keep volunteering this conversation on their own network like we'll
00:32talk to sam about it thursday yeah and it's he's in a tough spot because the facts don't help him
00:40and he knows what the facts are because he was in the room yeah so like the notion that you
00:46get fired
00:47as a coach on a roster and you're offered a role as a greeter at fenway park as some sort
00:54of lateral
00:54move is disingenuous at best yeah and i we talked about this at the start of the show because it
01:03came up i mean you're talking about a guy who i think in general is beloved oh yeah by red
01:09sox fans
01:10and gave his flesh and blood for a long time to the organization so i i i i think that
01:19there are
01:19people who would like if something's going to end would appreciate if it if it was ended in a
01:25different way i i guess yeah i guess that the the you know or just don't volunteer conversations
01:31about it i i guess the question becomes like all right how does it end better because he's a coach
01:38right so you would figure like you can't fire him and then be like oh like we want to hire
01:44you to be
01:44a greeter like he's a coach and granted he's you know one of the the the beloved red sox over
01:53the
01:53past 20 years but when you're it's one thing to say hey you know david ortiz we'd like for you
02:01to
02:01be a greeter because you're not coaching just be an ambassador i mean is there a comp on it when
02:07it
02:07comes to somebody who played for the organization forever like a texter says uh rick patino firing
02:14firing red our back yeah we thought we brought that up earlier this week but that's even different
02:19because obviously jason veritek and red our back are very different you know uh but it's it's
02:26this ownership group is unable to be direct and honest and so many of their headaches would go away
02:36if they just rip band-aids off as opposed to telling you there was never a wound in the first
02:40place yeah the issue is you should have never offered him that whatever the job was to be the
02:48greeter well they did that to save face but you should have never did that see that all that did
02:52is made it worse you should have just been like hey listen we decided to go in a different direction
02:58with some of the coaches alex core and these other guys and you know jason veritek who was what was
03:03this role the game plan coach and just make that decision well this is the so 617 texter this is
03:10the
03:10argument name one thing that jason veritek did to help the team since he's been in the front office
03:16well he wasn't in the front office right he was on the coaching staff and there i i am certain
03:21there
03:21are multiple things that he did he could tell you about them um at some point but i will say
03:28that you
03:29got rid of you made the bold decision to get rid of the baseball guys that's what i will call
03:35that
03:35group of people who were fired and the team is no better than it was when you made the decision
03:40like no better right but at least make the decision like we let him go with alex cora we thought
03:45the
03:46team was heading in the wrong direction jason veritek's a red sox hall of famer we would love to
03:49have him back whenever he wants into the state no but see i wouldn't even say that because when you
03:54say we'd love to have him back then it's been like well why'd you fire him in the first place
03:58no i
03:58meant like have him back to come and watch a game oh okay yeah yeah like i i think the
04:02separation
04:03should have been rip it off like a band-aid like curtis said we love what he did for the
04:07organization
04:08yeah and but we decided to go in a different direction with a handful of our coaches how about
04:14this we decided to go in a different direction and jason veritek's place within the red sox history
04:18in this organization is forever the same done what about free lobster poutine for life would that have
04:23made things better that might have worked better right has anybody tried it no no i also disgusting
04:30this is just another just another one of so many examples of this organization being so disorganized
04:38and dumb with how they execute something like whether it's baseball or just deciding how they're
04:44gonna fire someone they can't even fire someone correctly well that's because they you know when you
04:50want to be loved and you want to be liked by everybody and you're firing somebody that we are
04:55we know what jason veritek means to not just the city of boston to this organization you're firing
05:03you're not firing that guy you're just firing the coach jason veritek and leave it at that but
05:09they're trying to make it look like tech chose like oh tech chose cora tech chose not tech is spiteful
05:16like i believe that's why they're positioning it this way is to make it look like no no no we
05:22love
05:22tech like we love tech just like you guys we want him to be here when really they're not giving
05:27him
05:28from what it sounds like a role that is worthy of his skills right and we decided to go in
05:34a different
05:34direction because we felt like him alex core and the rest of the coaches that we fired were part of
05:40the problem not the solution so just say that you know i think that's the biggest thing and fans would
05:45be like you know there'd be a group of fans that go oh you should never fire tech he you
05:50know what
05:50he's meant but at least you wouldn't come out and make it seem like oh but we got another job
05:55for him
05:56over here but did would anybody have been um outraged if it was just a press release that
06:03everybody got fired that was in that like that everybody that was fired was fired yeah i think there
06:07would be a lot of there would be a handful of fans because of what veritek but it would be
06:12over by now
06:13yes yeah initially there would be outrage yep because it's like well why didn't you elevate
06:18him to the manager here's a text from connecticut that says greg are you saying that chad tracy
06:23isn't a baseball guy many would disagree nope i'm not saying that he's the interim manager if he is
06:29uh the manager of this team going forward then i will give them uh a quick round of applause because
06:35they are actually uh okay with baseball guys being around the organization and not picking the
06:41nerds over the baseball guys well presley's a baseball guy i mean he's not a baseball guy he
06:47played major league baseball for what 10 years yes but that's not it's the philosophy there's a
06:52difference like when you start to look at it there are baseball guys in every sport there are certain
06:58guys that have specific philosophies on where they see whether it's an offense a defense and they could
07:06be they are they start out as baseball guys but they just like they might be a little bit more
07:11analytic heavy now as former baseball can we just call what it is like we're talking about the
07:17difference between are you doing what's best for the game versus what's best for the business
07:23are you choosing what you think maybe if it's a risk even that it's going to put you over the
07:27top to
07:28being a postseason playoff team to being a world series contender or are you looking at the stats say
07:34this this is the conservative route that we can take i'm saying as in a risk averse way and still
07:40keep a fat bottom line yeah and i feel i don't know i think also like many many many red
07:47sox fans
07:48were outraged when they traded rafael devers to the giants and that they got not very much back and
07:55forced the giants to take the whole contract today you will not find a single person that rips the red
08:01socks for the devers trade right because it worked out and that was a deal that was a bold move
08:07they made it craig breslow said they weren't going to be as talented but they could win more games he
08:12was right yeah and they so when you make a decision just stand behind it right but he but i
08:17think the
08:18issue is afterward he had no absolutely no plan for third base or his plan was durbin who's you know
08:25sitting now and hitting 178 or whatever he's right and see that becomes the biggest stick sticking point
08:32with a lot of fans because everybody goes to the bregman bregman bregman bregman that's the
08:37and i think if bregman's here your team's still in the same position i don't think bregman's gonna do
08:42anything different because it wasn't like you didn't bring back a guy who was gonna hit 350
08:46and was gonna hit you know 45 home runs you and so but that is the i think the biggest
08:53issue that
08:54people have with with bregman is the whole bregman thing other than that you kind of look at it's not
09:01the bregman thing it's the roster construction in general when it comes to offense and put the one
09:08piece that everybody brings up is is alex bregman i'm the only one who brings up pete alonzo more than
09:15anything you'll have people go the only person no no no no more than anything people don't when we
09:19talk about their biggest off-season mistake it's more bregman than it is missing out on pete alonzo
09:27when people talk about everybody would agree that pete alonzo even though he's not
09:32you know lights out right now that he would be a great addition no and i don't disagree with that
09:38alonzo it's schwarber it's anybody was like six years ago i mean talking about yeah he was
09:45schwarber it's like six years ago or however long when how long ago before the 2022 season yeah so
09:52what's that five years ago six years ago the schwarb thing they should have re-signed schwarbs
09:57they didn't right and then you look at where not just available as a free agent yeah oh this
10:03passed off people talk about schwarber i think i'm talking about whether it's alonzo schwarber
10:10whatever it was right he was a free agent yeah he was a free agent you just act like pete
10:15alonzo
10:15like is the was would be the savior for the team no no but every every time you bring up
10:19every time
10:20people bring up schwarber great it's it's the approach of we're going in here and we're going
10:26to be able to win these games scoring two runs and i agree with preventing any any offense by the
10:34other team and it's it's a absolute failure of a plan i agree with that but we're talking about
10:42the why are people upset mainly about the offense they're mainly upset about the offense is because
10:50it stinks i understand there isn't any the acquisitions that weren't um weren't made that's
10:57what we're talking about here's what people are frustrated about it's that it wasn't the plan
11:02in this offseason to enter it saying we're going to go with run prevention it became the plan when
11:08things were too expensive just like the same front office wiggy will have you believe they offered
11:14juan soto 700 million but if you're telling so if you're talking about run prevention right then why
11:20were you doing that but if you're telling me that it was about for bregman it was about the no
11:26trade
11:27clause then it wasn't about money because they offered him the money it is what small market
11:31teams used as an excuse on a yearly basis for not landing big guys in free but if bregman said
11:37you
11:37know what f the no trade clause would they have given him the money i think so right so it
11:43wasn't
11:43about the money it wasn't about run prevention it was about bringing in guys that could hit
11:47they landed on run prevention when they failed to land the players and pay market value they miss
11:52and brezlow's to blame because he told us before the offseason even started their number one goal
12:01was to get a power right-handed bat yeah we would all love schwarber to come back and play but
12:07their
12:08goal was a right-handed power bat because they felt like well bringing in schwarbs is a lefty power bat
12:14we have we feel like a bray who might be that guy we got too many left-handed bats that
12:19was what
12:20they told us brezlow they swung and missed on that but in the past wigs when they've made mistakes like
12:27they did with john lester they correct and they add that specific position right so they lose lester
12:34they offer him a pathetic three-year deal they overpay david price right at least they were it wasn't that
12:39they changed the way they were doing their job it wasn't changing their no their uh financial the
12:46final their roster building technique it was that they made a mistake and they filled the hole this
12:51offseason they had 12 12 outfielders and no power no power on the corners and they did nothing to
12:56and i agree with you because we were talking about trading uh duran last year we've known for the past
13:02three years at least we've been talking about this that they have changed their philosophy on how they
13:09build their roster when it comes to the financial element they're like well we want to we don't
13:14want to spend as much money because we've thrown a lot of money at bad contracts how is that working
13:19it's not working good for you at all it's not working out for you at all because your approach
13:24is not based on what's best for your team it's based on what's best for your wallet but you gave
13:30this is where i get confused you gave why would they give why would they give 300 million dollars
13:36right that was after an offseason where they were getting yelled at yeah but i guess you panicked
13:40but you guess what just like trevor's story was not best for the team you they did what you said
13:45they did in the past all right they missed out or they panicked boom we're writing a check to
13:50devis for 300 million dollars over 10 years or whatever the hell it was at the time so you paid
13:54devis you then uh not this offseason but the year before you go out you trade for crochet you pay
14:03him
14:03great wiggy if you were running a baseball team and you just bought it would you hire the red sox
14:08front office to lead it no no but the reds but the red sox approach is now not being a
14:14team it's
14:15it's losing games no it's not being a team like the toronto blue jays where they go in a second
14:20we spend 600 million or whatever the number is and we're still basically at the bottom of the of
14:28the division it's a pathetic argument but that but that's their approach i know that's their approach
14:33i know you don't want to hold breslow accountable i just held them accountable right that ruins your
14:38alex core it ruins your alex core narrative that this was all his fault but i would just ask you
14:44the hail mary right the breslow hail mary is standing up and going i'm firing the entire coaching
14:52staff basically except my guy andrew bailey okay so has that worked out as as as as is is anything
14:59different no since you've fired alex no no it is not different at all but i just held them
15:04accountable for not paying pete alonzo and going out and doing the things that you want to do
15:10the firing of alex core listen it hasn't worked out but it was long overdue
15:18was it not i mean he had the team in the playoffs last season so i don't know okay prior
15:24to that how
15:24did the team look on the on the core so one season so he was he won a world series
15:29he was here eight
15:30years all right so if you if you win a world series or you win a championship you should be
15:35able to
15:35be the coach for the rest of the your life the rest of the your life no but why you
15:42won a world
15:43series oh i mean doc rivers should still be coaching then if it's your approach well he did
15:48coach for like 10 years no no i'm saying for the celtics why would you move on from that guy
15:52yeah cora was underachieving with this team yeah i'm fine with cora getting fired so is chad tracy
15:59right because it's the team not the team not the coach right he's underachieving with this team
16:04and when you look at or the team as constructed is made to underachieve oh no no but no no
16:10which is
16:11really the same team that going into the season a lot of us projected to have 90 plus wins and
16:18some
16:18of us had them in the world series the same roster right i was wrong
