00:01Conditions have eased on the Gold Coast this morning but it follows an absolute drenching
00:06across the region yesterday. A month's worth of rain falling across the Gold Coast and
00:11hinterland in just 24 hours. Now we have heard from some residents that they feel they weren't
00:16properly warned by the Bureau of Meteorology ahead of this heavy rain. They say that the
00:22bomb warned about 60 to 80 millimetres would fall across the Gold Coast and hinterland
00:27but some regions saw up to 119 millimetres and we have heard unofficial reports of more
00:33rain falling in parts of the Gold Coast. Premier David Christofulli weighed in on this this
00:39morning. Here's what he had to say. I want to see the federal government invest more in the Bureau
00:44of Meteorology. I really do. I want to see improvements to warnings and an upgrade to the
00:51systems that do that and if we do that we give every chance to get information to people
00:56in what is a really fragmented market these days and getting messages out like that is
01:01always difficult. I acknowledge that but I don't think that means we shouldn't redouble
01:05our efforts to invest in things like the Bureau. The SES responded to more than 300 call-outs
01:11across the state yesterday after 5am. The majority of these were to the Gold Coast and Brisbane
01:17and most of these were for tarping and sandbagging. However there were a number of rescues across
01:23the region as well. This included a major rescue operation in the scenic rim. About 50 students and
01:30teachers from a Brisbane school were on a trip to Mount Barney when they became trapped by rising
01:36floodwaters. They were rescued from these floodwaters by about 11pm last night and they returned safely
01:42home to Brisbane this morning in the early hours according to the Education Department. The Premier says
01:49that two other people who are outside of this school group are still trapped by these floodwaters
01:55at Mount Barney. However he says they're in a safe location and they're in constant communication
02:00with emergency services at this time. Looking ahead the Bureau says about 25 millimetres of rain
02:08are expected to still fall across the Gold Coast and hinterland throughout the day on already
02:13sodden catchments. So authorities are warning people to stay vigilant.
